T
he railway represents one of the most iconic, classic, and modern forms of transport since the 19th century. From the earliest steam locomotives to the high-speed Shinkansen (bullet trains) of Japan, rail networks have marked the evolution of developing societies since their inception.
A critical form of both passenger and supply chain transportation, railways can be considered the veins and capillaries of nation’s body pathways carrying vessels from start to finish and keeping the cycle of development alive. In the Asia-Pacific region, Bombardier Transportation is
one company that represents this continuous development. Bombardier exists as a company that provides reliable, safe, and sustainable transport available for a world of urban growth and digital change. The firm’s Australian branch strives to create holistic, high-quality mobility and transport solutions that anticipate APAC Outlook issue 48 | 3

the needs of the future, therefore maximising value for those who work alongside them, and the customers and passengers that choose to travel via the company’s transport. Bombardier provides solutions for various forms of rail transport, such as metro, tram and light rail, commuter, people mover, and monorail trains, as well as e-mobility and battery technology. Combining the latest technology, high performance, and the peoplecentric ideals, Bombardier Australia manages to bring to the fore transportation that serves to benefit all those involved, including the environment.
SAFETY AND INNOVATION Since the emergence and spread of COVID-19, rail transport providers have seen a dramatic decline in passenger numbers. The pandemic has disrupted the jobs and lives of countless people, such as transport operators who have suffered substantial financial implications. The latter half of 2020 saw people adapting to the impacts of COVID, emerging from government-imposed lockdowns, and resuming daily life (although not in the same way) such as returning to work. In order to restart the lifeblood of national economies and get communities moving once more, it was (and still is) essential for the public to feel safe and protected while taking to public transport such as the railway. Bombardier places safety as a paramount importance in its operations. The company strives to protect its customers, employees, and partners against the effects of the pandemic. As a top priority, Bombardier continues to develop solutions to best deal with and exceed beyond the evolving challenges that exist. Increased urbanisation and demands for comfort are balanced with the operators’ responsibility
The Power of Partnerships Cummins Engines are known throughout the world for being reliable, fuel efficient, low emissions, and through partnerships such as with Bombardier they show how innovation, new technology and true integration can benefit the community. Cummins Asia Pacific has worked with Bombardier Transportation in Australia for more than two decades, developing high-speed trains such as the VLocity, operating at speeds of up to 160 km/hr with world leading reliability. The partnership started long before the first VLocity railcar went into service in Melbourne back in 2005 and has continued to grow with now over 260 trains in service. The latest models are powered by the 750 horsepower Cummins QSK19 diesel engine, whilst each of the three railcars are fitted with a Cummins powered, 85 kW genset, making them some of the cleanest and quietest trains available. The Off-Highway Engine Business Director for Cummins Asia Pacific, Tim Worme explains further; “We enjoy a close relationship with Bombardier across all parts of our business, from design, engineering, sales, and ongoing service support which is available 24 hours a day.” With so many trains running across the rail network daily, reliability is a key factor that has driven the partnership.
“The initial design aim was for 70,000 kms of travel without a delay of four minutes or more, and are currently achieving over 150,000 kms, which is world leading reliability.” Together, the partnership has pushed for ongoing innovations and through new technologies, have been able to develop a modular raft approach allowing for out of chassis upgrades for continued development of the trains, whilst minimizing downtime. “Our team of technicians can swap over an entire genset in a VLocity train in less than eight hours.” Victor added. “Which helps as we look to upgrade the fleet’s gensets with the more powerful latest common rail diesel engines with the highest level of environmental standards, which are also much quieter; to reduce their impact in the communities.” Leading the future direction of Cummins Asia Pacific, Peter Jensen-Muir, Executive Managing Director, has a clear vision of how the business will continue to work alongside customers to lead into the future; “Cummins has over 100 years of history in helping shape the industry. Importantly with Bombardier, we share a common set of values and objectives to drive improved operator and commuter experience.” “Into the future, we will be focused on offering greater connectivity for improved machine learning, continuing to decrease emissions through cleaner diesel engines and further integration of systems, as well as offering new fuel cell technologies,” Peter concluded.
Victor Lekhtman is the Rail Business Manager at Cummins Asia Pacific and has been involved in the partnership for over 15 years. “Cummins and Bombardier have been focused on developing the most reliable trains available, which you can only achieve through close collaborations.”

“BOMBARDIER’S SOLUTIONS MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING UTILISING ADJUSTABLE VEHICLE LAYOUTS, AND SMART TOOLS FOR PASSENGER FLOW AND CROWD CONTROL” to keep passengers moving and maintaining safety. In light of this, Bombardier’s solutions maintain social distancing utilising adjustable vehicle layouts, and smart tools for passenger flow and crowd control. An aspect of the transport solution is to reinforce safety from the virus in the form of increased sanitation measures, innovative surface treatments, to install contactless interfaces, and the inclusion of filters to reduce the presence of harmful pathogens from within the vehicle’s internal atmosphere. Bombardier’s antiviral filters for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HAVC) systems are smart and efficient solutions for present issues surrounding COVID-19 in the rail transportation sector. The 8 | APAC Outlook issue 48
systems are quick and easy to install, and safe in operation, making them ideal for newly designed trains and retrofitting existing fleets of vehicles. These filters capture and eliminate the virus (with a 99.9 percent efficiency rate) making the company’s air filtration solution unique in the market. These are just some of Bombardier’s latest solutions that give passengers the confidence they need to continue choosing reliable, safe, and sustainable rail travel as their preferred mode of transport for their daily commutes, as well as long-distance travelling. At the same time, the company is raising the bar on rail safety without compromising on efficiency, performance or the premium travel experience that passengers have come to expect from our vehicles, systems and services.
Our focus is on building relationships, partnerships and understanding your specific industry needs. The strong partnership AME Systems has with Bombardier Australia is one we value very highly. This has enabled our business to grow, gain exposure in partnering with a global OEM company and promote local manufacturing in Australia. Bombardier Australia is one of Australia’s leading rail industry partners with a strong portfolio of upcoming projects which is extremely beneficial for Bombardiers local supply chain through providing opportunity to keep jobs local and build capability. AME Systems commissioned a purpose-built facility to begin our supply of wiring harnesses and assemblies for trams being manufactured in Dandenong. Bombardier Australia was very supportive during the introductory phase and this has continued to this day. AME Systems is very grateful for the opportunity to partner alongside Bombardier Australia and we look forward to many more years working together.
