Withmanyimprovementstothecity’s bikingandpedestrianinfrastructure(see thearticleonpage4),nowisagoodtime topreparehowyourfamilywillgetto schoolsafelyandontime.

PleasantHill schoolshelpstudentslearnandcelebratebeingapartofadiverse communitybyparticipatinginheritagecelebrationssuchaseventsfor BlackHistorymonthandHispanic Heritagemonth.Mostschoolshost multiculturalnightswherefamilies areinvitedtosharetraditionsfrom theirculture.TheDiversityCommissionparticipatedinValleyView MiddleSchool’sfirstMulticultural NightsponsoredbytheirPTA.The eventfeaturedadrummingperformance,potluckandartactivities wherefamiliescouldlearnabout eachother’scommunities.Aswe returntoschool,wehopeyouwillbe involvedinbuildinganinclusivecommunitywherewecelebratethe differencesthatmakePleasantHill richanddiverse.

Ofcourse,wewantourfamiliestobe safewhenbikingaroundPleasantHill. Makesureyourbicyclesarewellmaintained,haveadequatebrakesandtires, andhavegoodlightsandreflectors. Alwayswearahelmet.Arear-viewmirror attachedtothehelmet,glasses,orhandlebarsisimportanttopermitevasive actionwithoutdoingsoblindly.Make sureyourchildrenknowthattheymust obeytherulesoftheroad,whichmeans stoppingatstopsigns,redlights,andsignals.Theyshouldalwaysrideontheright sideoftheroad,stayinsinglefileand yieldtopedestrians.

2023 Intersection and Crosswalk Improvements Project (various locations)
PHRec in Action!
WE’VEGOTROOMFORIMPROVEMENT!
TheCityCouncilrecentlyapprovedfundingforthe2023IntersectionandCrosswalkImprovementsproject.Thisprojectiscurrentlyin thedesignphaseandwillprovidepedestriansafetyimprovementsat thenineintersectionscurrentlymonitoredinthemorningandearly afternoonduringtheschoolyearbycrossingguardspaidforbythe CityofPleasantHill.
Whenitcomestomakingimprovementstoourparksandfacilities,PleasantHillRec&ParkDistrictdeliversonitscommitments. Fourteenyearsago,votersapprovedanimprovementandfunding plantobuildthenewPleasantHillCommunityCenter,SeniorCenter, TeenCenter,andrenovatePleasantOaksPark.Theresult:allfour facilitieswerecompletedontimeandwithinbudget.Today,these beautifulcommunityfacilitiesservethousandsoflocalseniors, youth,andfamilieseachyear.
Wehaveseveralproperties,however,thatarebeyondroutine maintenanceandneedsimilarimprovementstobecomeusefulcommunityamenities.Thoseincludethe103-year-oldSchoolHouse, WinslowCenter,anda70-year-oldpool.Someofourparksalsoneed newrestroomsandplaygroundequipment.
Thesenewimprovementswillbeabenefittotheentirecommunity,includingschool-basedmembers,andwillprovidesafetyfor pedestriansandbicyclistsonayear-roundbasisthroughtheinstallationofadditionalsignage,newhigh-visibilitycrosswalks,flashing beaconsystems,LEDflashingstopsigns,speedhumps,andtrafficsignal improvements.ThesignalizedintersectionswillreceivedynamicLED no-rightturnsignsandupgradedinfraredpedestriandetection.Ata one-timecostofapproximately$840,000,thesenewimprovementswill becoupledwithfutureSafeRoutestoSchoolprograminitiatives,includingnewsuggestedWalking&BikingMaps,tocontinueaddressing pedestrianandbicyclesafetyaroundthesenineschools.Constructionis anticipatedtobecompletedbeforetheendoftheyear.

Haveanideaforacommunityservice project?Nowisthetimeforprojectleads tosignupforthe2023PleasantHillCommunityServiceDay.Since2005,eachyear PleasantHillresidentscometogetherto volunteeronprojectsspreadthroughout theCity.Thisyear,CommunityService Dayisscheduledfor9:00a.m.–12:00p.m. onSeptember23,2023.Someofthe projectshaveincluded:

Fireworks not allowed in Contra Costa County
Aswearealreadyintofireseason hereinContraCostaCounty,thePleasantHillcommunityisremindedthat fireworksofanykindarenotallowed. Thisincludestheso-called‘Safeand Sane’fireworks,whichareitemssuchas sparklers,smokebombs,andthelike.
Fireworksofnearlyeverytypecan createenoughheatorsparkstostarta fire,andwhenconditionsareasdryas theyarethatcanleadtodisastrous effects.
Additionally,theunsafeusageof fireworkscanpresentadangerof harmtousersandthosearoundthem. Eachyear,thousandsofpeopleare hospitalizedbecauseofimproperand unsafeuseoffireworks.
Ratherthantaketheriskofpersonalinjuryorsettingfiretoa neighborhood,thecommunityis encouragedtoattendandenjoythe annualfireworksshowputonbythe 4th ofJulyCommission.Theshowis stagedforsafetyandmonitoredto makesureallprotocolsarefollowed. Weaskeveryonetopleaserefrain fromtheuseoffireworksforthe safetyofthecommunity.
