President’s Report

The League continues to grow with us being well received within countr y football / netball as a whole We continue to go from strength to strength as our competition has expanded greatly over the past few seasons with the continued development of our football and netball This expansion will allow us, to develop and grow the leagues financial status; strengthen our balance sheet and most of all our profit It is vital for us as a league to remain financially viable, which will enable us to support the existing clubs, their townships and communities

It has been our commitment and aim to reward those clubs who support our League with purchases of goods through our valued sponsors and supporters Again this season we will issue those clubs with a dividend of $ 10,000-00, which brings our total dividends back to our clubs of around $ 175,000-00 to date

Season 2008 has been a positive one, with some new teams winning premierships in both our football and netball competitions I am extremely proud of the efforts of the many hundreds of volunteers who give up their own time to ensure our sports expand and continue to be an integral part of each community

I wish to express my personal thanks to each of our Board Members, Deputy President Shane Smith, Directors Leo Groenewegen, Bill Heppell, Graeme Tuplin, Ronnie Jones and Frank Moss These people have supported me and our office staff and continue to work hard to better our League I thank each of these gentlemen for their support, commitment and friendship they have given me over the past 10 seasons. I have chosen to step down from my role as President at the conclusion of this season I have enjoyed the past 10 seasons, with the last 8 as President, it is something I’m truly proud of and honoured to have ser ved our League in this important position I trust that each year I have been involved we have continued to get stronger and gained a healthier financial position year in year out

Our senior players have continued to develop with a core group of players coming up through the ranks over the past 5 years and we are starting to see the benefits Although the seniors lost in the dyeing moments of the game, their commitment and efforts this season were fantastic The interleague concept is something close to my heart and

I hope for many years to come we push our junior and senior sides to better themselves and compete at this high level of competition Thank you to Board Members Shane Smith & Leo Groenewegen, our Chief Executive Officer Stephen Walter and our Senior Coach Mark “Beaker” Sandilands, Chairman of Selectors Jim Martin and Runner Adrian Keitley your hard work is ver y much appreciated

Ceo’s Report

No doubt an arduous season for many clubs both on & off the track. In an era of economic uncertainty, running community organisations becomes an even bigger challenge, especially when it comes to revenue raising It is now more opportune than ever to think outside of the square and dare I say it, truly commit to our loyal sponsors by buying their product, using their service or recommending their business Our ver y existence relies on their generosity so please ensure & encourage your members to support your clubs’ & League’s sponsors they also need your help

After one year at the helm, I have had the opportunity to see first hand the operations of our League, and there is no doubting that the business model that is in place, largely as a result of significant contributions from our Directors, especially our retiring President Tony Mitchell, has placed at strength the future of our competition and ensures our viability and capability to support clubs when they need it most There are some power clubs in our competition that have established standards that we all should aspire to. Their prowess on the field is matched by their strength off the field with strong & committed committees and dedicated volunteers & supporters It is incumbent upon all of us to seek out our most successful operators and leverage their best practices I know that Hawthorn did that as they looked to Geelong to improve their capability Don’t be afraid to ask for some ideas or for help it may be your best chance to reverse your fortunes I know that I will be doing that when I compare our operations with other football & netball leagues

Balance sheet strength is a core success factor and without it, clubs will always struggle. The next several weeks are key to 2009 success. I trust that all clubs are primed & have their plans almost finalised Silvan Football Club is clearly the club that is setting the benchmark Congratulations to all members, supporters & sponsors for an outstanding season They deliver a quality ser vice Back to back flags & undefeated to boot is an outstanding effort in 2008

Alexandra has taken all before it & is now eager to challenge the Division One teams in what promises to be Alexandra’s biggest test in many years They are up to the challenge & I wish them every success

Netball is well & truly at the fore of our competition and to that end, Mt Evelyn has set a standard that is the envy of all clubs They are a most professional outfit and they have thrown out the challenge to all clubs to see if anyone can match them, both on & off the court

I have enjoyed the camaraderie displayed by all clubs a camaraderie that is unique and sets our League above all others Believe it or not, this is the best Football & Netball League in Victoria and is a credit to all involved

I would like to congratulate Ron Jones for his contribution to the Board as a Director, Ron steps down to assume a more prominent role with his local club Thank you Ron for your contribution to the well being of the YVMDFL

To all of the YVMDFL Directors, you are true community volunteers who dedicate much of your own time & money to ensure the YVMDFL

continues to evolve & prosper Many may not realise the efforts that have been expended, over many years… congratulations to you all.

It would be most remiss of me not to mention our President, Mr Tony Mitchell Having only known Tony this year, it was ver y clear at the outset that he is a passionate local football follower whose only focus was for the betterment of the YVMDFL. His passion for our League is without peer and Tony’s contribution as President for the last 8 years has culminated in delivering a Football League business model that is the envy of many other competitions Tony, although stepping down from the YVMDFL, will still be involved, albeit in a much higher capacity as a Director of the VCFL I look for ward to working with Tony in a different capacity and have no doubts that his business acumen & passion for local football will make a significant impact for all Victorian countr y football

The YVMDFL office has been revamped with all staff new to their roles this year Judy Orren & Stacey Cooper are keen & committed to deliver the best ser vice they can to all of the YVMDFL football & netball clubs We are all on a steep learning cur ve and will always be keen for constructive feedback & suggestions to improve our ser vice

The YVMDFL team this year assumed responsibility for the operation & administration of the DRJFL This initiative is part of a broader VCFL strategy to streamline & centralize administration functions across countr y Victoria The YVMDFL fully endorse this initiative & look for ward to further centralizing processes to ensure our costs to ser vice the football & netball communities are kept to a minimum

Ceo’s Report

I would like to congratulate Peter Cameron on his contribution to the YVMDFL, Peter is an outstanding leader and in conjunction with Will Eastmure has been instrumental in the success of our umpiring department this year

Without sponsors, we would struggle to survive I thank & congratulate all of our sponsors for being community minded Your products & ser vices are on the highest priority shopping list A special welcome to Charles Exton & High Mountain Spring Water for their generous contribution and I look for ward to promoting his business for many years to come Mr Alan Webb & Compass; Mr Rob Dolan & Sticks; Mr Adrian Keane & AMCOR; Mr Tony Barnes & Barracuda Security; Mr Michael Philp & Cadbury Schweppes, Mr Mike Fleming & Bendigo Bank Upwey; and Mr Garr y Sparke & Cyan Press you are all outstanding ambassadors for your companies & thank you on behalf of all clubs for your support To our major suppliers; Mr Kevin Cooklsey - Cougar & Mr Andrew Shenker - Victor, we work well together & I look for ward to continuing our partnerships for many years to come

All in all, I have enjoyed the challenges of 2008, but importantly; look for ward to 2009 with enthusiasm Congratulations to all Presidents & committees of all clubs you are all the core ingredient to our success I look for ward to working with you all next season

independent Tribunal Report

This season we’ve had a record low number of reports, which can mean one of two things and asks the questions – “Are our umpires doing their job properly?” or “Are the players finally realising that unruly behaviour will not be tolerated in the YVMDFL?” We would like to think the answer lies in the latter

This year we had a total of 14 reports (way down on last years total of 21) with 13 being found guilty and 1 not guilty on appeal A total of 26 weeks suspension was given, 3 investigations & 6 tribunal hearings 5 Set penalties were taken

Considering 537 home/away games were played (plus finals), the quantity of reports is pleasingly low What was reduced in 2008 was the amount of weeks’ suspension handed out by the tribunal (26), and the amount of scheduled hearings (14) the lowest on record This would suggest that the severity of the offences is diminishing

Other figures show that our umpires are adopting the use of the yellow card to maybe stop the need to call tribunal hearings for minor incidents The figures below reflect that there are some issues within clubs that need to be resolved, as most of the Yellow Cards for 2008 were for misconduct The figures incorporate Seniors, Reser ves and Unders

Alexandra – 3 Belgrave – 10 Emerald – 9

Gembrook Cockatoo – 15 Healesville – 7 Kinglake – 11

Mt Evelyn – 11 Monbulk – 3 Olinda Ferny Creek – 10 Powelltown - 8 Seville – 7 Silvan – 14

Thornton Eildon – 12 Upwey Tecoma – 9 Wandin – 10

Warburton Millgrove – 6 Woori Yallock – 9 Yarra Glen – 8 Yarra Junction – 12 Yea - 4

Reports are always a two-way street, between clubs and umpires The 2008 figures suggest that our players are becoming more professional in their attitudes to playing the game, however the need to curb undisciplined behaviour still remains as a challenge for all of us

The YVMDFL would again like to thank & acknowledge the efforts of Messr’s Greg Black & Alex Lager way in their roles as joint chairman of the tribunal as well as the efforts of tribunal members, Fur y DiPietro, Greg Tippett, Ken McMaster, Don Carey, Harold Bromley and Keith Thompson, Investigations Officers Gar y Maddern and Kevin Barrie and club advocates – like last year, the ser vices of these people were, fortunately, not called upon that often

10 YEAR SUMMARY

Finance Report

I am pleased to report a full year operating surplus of $58,272, which is an increase of 54.9% over last year. Net surplus of $22,680 (including write downs) is a 1 8% increase over last year There was a considerable focus this year on costs with some notable improvements, especially with telephone and advertising expenditure

This year has been supported by a $15,000 grant from the VCFL to assist in the development of a centralized administration hub that can support both the YVMDFL & DRJFL processes This is a considerable opportunity to maximize synergies between like type organisations The VCFL funding does wind down to $10k next year & $5k in yr3

Moving to Cyan Press has been most beneficial financially from both a record production cost & sponsorship perspective

There are several carried for ward costs that did not appear in the 2007 accounts which will assist in an improved result for 2009 The investment in Kilsyth has been written down and has resulted in an asset write down (P&L expense) of $17 5k Until there is a change of management at Kilsyth (Eastern Ranges) there is no expectation that this facility will be used in the foreseeable future A further advertising bad debt of $1650 from Easter Ranges has also been written off

Finals income has improved primarily due to a $2 increase in admission fees, the first increase in 7 years (Table 1)

The YVMDFL Board has declared a club rebate of $10,000 for clubs operating within the trading terms of the YVMDFL. Rebates are based on your club’s sales excluding record purchases & affiliation / registration fees (Table 2)

I am pleased to report that we have no supplier creditors on our balance sheet which enables a much stronger footing leading into 2009 as compared to the beginning of 2008 Creditors that appear in the balance sheet relate to superannuation liabilities

The more your club purchases through the YVMDFL, the greater your benefit will be Please keep this in mind when you purchase your apparel, drinks, confectionar y & medical gear etc Our prices are more than competitive and of course when you make allowance for our generous trading terms, the YVMDFL may have the best deal The more clubs that purchase from us, the bigger our turnover will be with our suppliers This can only result in an improved negotiating position The more you buy the better our prices will be & the bigger return your club will get

You may notice that there has been an accounting change in the treatment of club dividends This now must be recorded as a rebate and will appear in our P&L Rebates (dividends) paid to clubs is in excess of $175k over recent years Your continued support of the YVMDFL through club purchases can only improve this figure

Lilydale, Victoria 14th November 2008

senior interleague Report

This year we saw the YVMDFL up against the North Central/Mallee FL at Lord Nelson Park in St Arnaud

After an early start leaving from the Lilydale International, a four hour bus trip took us to the magnificent surrounds of Lord Nelson Park A few stretches, a bite to eat and the boys were summoned by coach Mark (Beaker) Sandilands (exUpwey-Tecoma) for a brief outline of the game plan All the players were keen and looking for ward to the game

Lead out by captain Danny (Gazza) Ryan (Woori Yallock) the team looked ready to go This they did in the first quarter with Daniel Ryan (Woori Yallock) marking strongly and kicking the first goal of the game A good first quarter saw the YVMDFL lead 7-3-45 to 3-0-18

The second quarter saw North Central/Mallee fight back well and with some inaccurate kicking by the YVMDFL boys, North Central/Mallee closed the gap to 10 points at half time with the YVMDFL 9-7-61 to North Central/Mallee 8-3-51

The third quarter proved to be a hard fought quarter by both sides Vice Captain Ryan Van Hoorn (Upwey/Tecoma) left the ground with a bad head cut that required the expertise of our great trainers to get him back to the fray The YVMDFL won the quarter by one point leading 12-11-83 to North Central/Mallee 11-4-70

A quick goal at the start of the fourth quarter saw North Central/Mallee get their tails up, and even though the YVMDFL attacked well, their conversion rate was poor with one goal and six behinds for the term A goal by North Central/Mallee seconds from the final siren saw them win by 2 points with final scores being YVMDFL 13-17-95 to 15-7-97

It was a disappointing end and even though I feel we played some promising footy, our conversion rate let us down

Our best players on the day were:

• Danny “Gazza” Ryan (Woori Yallock), voted best player by the umpires

• Ryan Van Hoorn (Upwey Tecoma), voted best player by his team mates

• Adam Bonsak (Wandin)

• Dallas Spencer (Woori Yallock)

• Mitch Benuda (Woori Yallock)

• Sam Turner (Healesville)

Our goal kickers were:

• Brendan James (Mt Evelyn) 3 goals

• Daniel Ryan (Woori Yallock) 3 goals

• Sam Turner (Healesville) 2 goals

• Robbie Allan (Worri Yallock) 2 goals

• Cam Buckland (Mt Evelyn) 2 goals

• Paul Grayling (Wandin) 1 Goal

Congratulations goes to coach Beaker Sandilands to unite a great bunch of committed players in such a short time Thanks also go to the Assistant Coach in Neil Gilbert (ex-Upwey/Tecoma), Jim Martin (Mount Evelyn) and Adrian Keitley (Runner)

Another big thankyou to our sponsors WorkSafe and especially the Compass Group, without who’s continued support would make these games extremely difficult

To our support staff in trainers Karen Webb (Silvan), Naomi Booker (Silvan), Frances Van Der Were (Mount Evelyn) and Physio Sriyan “Bob” Peres (Seville), your continued interest and support since the word ‘go’ has been brilliant

The biggest thanks go to all the players who support and embrace the concept of inter league football The experience you gained not only make you better footballers, but also enhances your reputations within and around the YVMDFL

I hope we do better next year when we take on the Bellarine Peninsula on our home tur f

We arrived to a ground bathed in sunshine, a facility second to none, an atmosphere that was fitting the occasion and supporters that were looking for ward to some good contested footy

The boys certainly hit the ground running with the sound of the siren A 6 5 to 1 0 lead at the end of the first quarter showed North Central that we were here to play James Shambrook played a true captains role and lead by example kicking 8 goals which earned him a Best on Ground medal The centre line was awesome in its relentless attack on the ball

The pressure continued on in the second quarter with a 5 4 to 1 0 quarter The game was well and truly in our keeping but it was no time for slowing down the attack The third quarter ended with the score at 14 13 to 5 0 The question was now by how much The final quarter saw the boys extend their lead and come away with a resounding win of 99 points

Final scores were YVMDFL 19 16 (130) def North Central/Mallee 5 1 (31)

The stage was set for the Seniors!!

Thanks to Brett Fisher, Steve Goodie, Simon Rourke, Greg Rowe and Greg Pearce and of course our Vice President Shane Smith, this could not have happened without your dedication, time and commitment

This group of boys is an indication of where our Senior Interleague squads could be heading Bring on 2009 on our home tur f!!!!

netball Report

On the 4th of May this year was the 1st of 2 interleague netball tr y-outs, the numbers where pretty good, and the talent was great, with some real stand out players Come the second week we had picked a really skilful and talented bunch of girls which consisted of Jade Hottes, Sam Coller, Kath Brown, Sarah Hogan, Kate Youlton, Lauren Tesoriero, Courtney MacDonald, Rachel Snell, and Mar y Livesy

Before we headed off for the interleague weekend we wanted to put our systems, presses and set plays to use in a practice match against the Knox Womens Division 2 State League team and much to mine and the teams delight, we blew them away The girls not only in the practice match but also in the Interleague game show such maturity as players along with an intensity I hadn’t seen before from a group of girls that had only trained together for a few weeks

As a group we decided to go up the night before the game to have fresher legs, which I’m sure helped with the end result We played 6 quarters against North Central and won all six quarters with an final result of 66 to 33 The girls played to there fullest and put in 100 percent on each set up and press we did, so much so that Kath Brown took the intercept of the game and so committed to taking the intercept she injured her ankle Mar y Livesy and Sam Coller combined so well together taking intercept, deflection and rebounds one after the other These two girls are simply the stand out defenders in the league Best on court went to Jade Hottes who is a dynamite in any team, she has exceptional skill, class and priceless leadership and showed all on the day

Congratulations to the girls on bringing home the 1st Interleague netball win, it was a great weekend and the commitment by all should be praised

Interleague is such an important part of our competition where the best of the best represents our League, we have some exceptional netballers in the Valley, so make sure you all get down to tr y outs to set an even bigger standard next year

Kate Upton
“How

times have changed!”

As an Umpire’s Board, we have the brief of appointing the ver y best Umpires available, a task that is not made easy, because of the fantastic consistency of most of our Umpires per formances over the past seasons and especially during the recent Finals games To those Umpires who achieved their dream and were appointed; you were entrusted with the incredible responsibility of participating in a game that means so much too so many For two hours you are the best in the world at what you do, “creating and maintaining a level and fair playing field, within the rules of the game of Australian Football ”

It was a special day in September when some dreams come true and many are shattered And so it is for the Yarra Ranges Umpires who have competed as fiercely as any team in our League both as individuals and combined teams each weekend, all in pursuit of the same dream, a berth in the finals Such an appointment is the incentive all Umpires seek, as a reward for their efforts throughout the season; with the ultimate appointment being a Grand Final game

We hope you enjoyed the experience and will be striving to repeat your achievements in 2009

Again the “Umpiring Academies” have proved their value by producing yet again a crop of talent that we can draw on in 2009

The vision displayed by so many in supporting these programs are evident, Umpires and more of them!

From this solid base we need to further develop the young talent already uncovered, as well as continuing with more academies to maintain the flow

One on one mentoring will be used to raise per formances and we would hope to use up to 6 or 8 volunteers, one for each ground

umpires Report

This is a far cr y from 2006 when our total umpire pool consisted of 65 Umpires made up of 31 Field, 18 Boundar y and 16 Goal This resulted in many umpires officiating in double games on a Saturday and even three games on the odd occasion

As we prepare for 2009 we now boast a total of 150 Umpires made up of 84 Field, 38 Boundar y and 28 Goal

Our Presentation Night held at the “Lilydale International” saw the following be recognised for their efforts

Gerr y Clausen Award

2009 will bring with it many challenges including a new Director of Umpiring and the continuance of the Academies and our ability to retain and inspire our existing 150 Umpires to mentor and support our new recruits

We already have 25 people wishing to participate in Academies in 2009 and three clubs have expressed interest in being involved in hosting them We intend to hold 2 or 3 Academies with the emphasis on quality as opposed to, in the past, quantity

The Umpiring Department is already sourcing Sponsors for the upcoming season in order to part finance the development of all Umpires

Our efforts this year have seen the introduction of Orange Uniforms, a new training venue, miking up of Umpires for direct on field communication (a concept that has now been adopted by the VCFL), and changing our image to one of a family oriented group, which ensures that our parents are involved with the education of their children

Four senior Umpires will be returning to our group in 2009 They include Darr yl Ward, Jake Hinton and Paul Shoebridge We have also received expressions of interest from our partners, EFL Umpires

Your game is our game!
