USA Manufacturing

Since our founding in 1981, Outdoor Research has made products in the United States of America. While the manufacturing of our commercial Outdoor line has turned to working with trusted international partners, we still proudly manufacture many of our OR Pro products in the US. Having a US factory in our headquarters building has helped streamline pattern making and prototyping and affords us keen insights into production process.

Creating Space for All in the Outdoors

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At Outdoor Research, we make trusted gear designed to get people outdoors. And we believe that the more people who get outside, the better we, and the world, will be. It’s only with each other that we’ve made it this far, and it’s only by inviting new partners into the fold that we will grow and progress as a brand, as people, and as a force for greater equality and justice in the world. If you believe that the outdoors is better when shared by all, join us in the journey.

Outdoor Research Ambassador Climbing Team Yosemite National Park

Quinn Mason

Born and raised in Seattle, Quinn Mason has led a life steeped in climbing since the very beginning—from annual summer trips to City of Rocks to weekend trips to Vertical World Climbing Gym with her family. At age 7, she entered the world of competitive rock climbing, and has trained, competed, and thrived in the sport ever since.

She’s competed all over the country and the world and has been a five-time Youth National Climbing Team member and a World Cup qualifier. But the thing she says she’s most proud of is sticking with climbing over time. As the pressures of elite competition often take a toll on young climbers, Quinn has aimed for a lifelong relationship with the sport.

Beth Rodden

Beth Rodden has been a fixture in the climbing community ever since she walked into her local climbing gym at the age of 14. She was part of the first generation of kid climbers in the 90's and spent her first six years competing and podium'ing at National and World Cup events, earning the title of four time Junior National Champion. After high school she "took a year off" of college to focus on outdoor climbing and went on her first expedition to Madagscar with an all star female team led by the legendary Lynn Hill. She quickly realized that she wanted to spend her entire time climbing and never went back to college.

Over the next decade she focused all of her energy to pushing the sport forward. In doing so, she became the first woman to establish a 5.14b with her ascent of The Optimist and established Yosemite's hardest traditional climb with Meltdown 5.14c. She also was the first woman to free climb three routes on El Cap and climb many other notable climbs in the Valley. For the past decade, she's been working on reframing some of the tired beliefs in the climbing community around body image, inner dialogue, and mental health. If she's not climbing in Yosemite or in the local gym, she's working with leading companies to help make the outdoor industry a more welcoming place. She's also working on finishing her book, due out fall of 2023.

Mark Abma Mark Abma Mark Abma

Mark Abma

Mark is a professional freeskier from Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia. He has won numerous awards, including the Powder Video Award for Best Male Performance in 2005 and 2007. Abma was first known as a mogul and park skier, but moved on to backcountry and heliskiing later in his career. Recently, Mark has started up an advocacy group called One Step, whose goal is to help skiers and ski resorts reduce their carbon footprint.

Zoe Atkin

Zoe Atkin Zoe Atkin Zoe Atkin

Olympic halfpipe athlete Zoe Atkin has been on skis since she was two years old. After seven years skiing every weekend in Maine, her family moved to Park City so that she and her sister Izzy Atkin could pursue their passion –now profession – of skiing.

Zoe’s ski style revolves around the halfpipe, a specialized discipline of which there are few training grounds in the world. She describes her excitement about the halfpipe as meticulously-crafted expertise: “You go as fast as you can, and as high as you can, but you still have this very narrow margin” to hit the landing safely. It’s the perfectionism of the landing that excites Zoe so much.

When she’s not skiing the halfpipe, Zoe prefers the big canyons and powder snow she finds in her home state of Utah. She and her sister Izzy enjoy skiing outside of competitions together, pushing each other to stretch their limits, and occasionally frightening their parents with how far those limits can go.

Inclusive Sizing Inclusive Sizing Inclusive Sizing

Inclusivity is not just a seasonal story for us.

It’s part of our greater commitment to continue to be the defacto leader in technical plus size apparel. After members of the PNW Outdoor Women community expressed frustration at being unable to find comfortable plus-sized outerwear, we heard their call and took action.

Before we put pencil to paper, future ambassadors Megan Banker, Sam Ortiz, Bennett Rahn, Rochelle Murphy, Britta Nelson, and Kaila Walton attended our first focus group in the fall of 2020 to help us design features tailored to their needs. With samples in hand, we held a Plus Summit where ambassadors were able to try on samples, offer feedback, and take their favorite styles home. Through fit testing and continuous communication loops, we’re charting a learning path that helps us cater to the underserved group of plus-sized outdoor enthusiasts in a personalized way.

While we received ample praise and press as the first brand to launch a technical layering system in a range of inclusive sizes as part of our passion to help everybody thrive outside, our work is far from done. Continuing what we started, we’re offering more styles, colors, and layering kits sizing up to 4X starting in Fall 2022. Recognizing that breathing room doesn’t always require extra leg room, we’re adding short lengths to a number of our top-selling bottoms in 2023 to invite even more people to experience the outdoors in carefree comfort.

Sam Ortiz

Born and raised in Kentucky, Sam didn’t get her start in the outdoors until she moved thousands of miles away into the heart of the wilderness: Alaska. Just down the street from her house was the trailhead to Mt. Juneau, and after her first hike, the rest is history.

Washington state is where Sam says she really found her footing in the outdoors. She learned how to climb through the nonprofit Mountaineers, where she has helped to teach climbing courses. While she loved climbing, she didn’t love feeling like she didn’t see anyone else who looked like her at the crag or the climbing gym. That feeling is what motivated her to devote her free time to expanding access to the outdoors through intentional events, partnerships, and advocacy.

Bennett Rahn

You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors

Bennett Rahn is a plus size climber and adventurer living in Seattle, Washington (land of the Duwamish tribe as part of the Coast Salish peoples). In her day job—which she sometimes calls her alter ego—she’s a software engineer. But her true love is being outside. She’s passionate about working toward more inclusive outdoor spaces for all.

You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors

You Belong Outdoors You Belong Outdoors

“I want to be a part of bringing the outdoors to people who have been completely forgotten and excluded historically,” Bennett says. To this end, she spends her personal time befriending and mentoring other folks, especially fat women, gender non-conforming folks and people of color. She is currently pursuing her SPI (single pitch instructor) training to become a certified guide. Her goal is to lead trips and show folks that climbing is for all.

Megan Banker

Megan Banker has always challenged the status quo. She studied neuroscience as one of three women in her master’s program at UC Davis, subsequently entering a male-dominated field as a chiropractor. Today, Megan runs her own business, managing marketing, sales, and more, along with helping people find solutions to their pain.

When Megan moved to the PNW she realized her passion for the outdoors, and frequently climbs, hikes, backpacks, and mountaineers. Megan gets hands-on with her community to encourage other people to try things outside of their comfort zone. From instructing new climbers, to spearheading initiatives that create more access to the outdoors, Megan’s life is steeped in giving back and building up others.

Climate Commitment Climate Commitment

Climate Action Corps

Outdoor Research is a proud founding member of the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) Climate Action Corps. Together with the OIA, we’re making changes that aim to make the outdoor industry the world’s first climate positive industry by 2030.

Climate Work

Outdoor Research is calculating our carbon footprint to begin looking at which reductions will make the greatest impact on our business, and the greatest positive impact on the climate. We’ve completed the GHG (Greenhouse Gas) calculation for our base year (2021) and will be continuing to calculate annually to track progress towards GHG reductions. We are working towards setting science-based targets to address GHG emmisions reduction in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Renewable Energy

Outdoor Research is committing to 100% renewable energy for all of our North American operations. Since 2021, through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from low- or zero-emission resources we have reduced the emissions associated with our electricity use from our owned and controlled operations by 80%, supporting renewable electricity development.

bluesign® System Partnership Recycled Content

bluesign® is a system that provides safer and more sustainable environments for people to work in and everyone to live in.  Powered by a holistic approach, bluesign traces each textile’s path along the manufacturing process, making improvements at every stage from factory floor to finished product. In 2021, more than 50% of Outdoor Research fabric is bluesign® approved, with the goal to increase each year.

Each of our products made with recycled content has the same quality as seen in other Outdoor Research gear, but with less impact on the planet. When you buy gear that’s made with recycled content, you’re reducing waste, energy usage, and dependence on petroleum.

Responsible Down Standard (RDS)

100% of our down products comply with the Responsible Down Standard. This standard safeguards the welfare of fowl that provide down and feathers for the puffy products we all love. When you shop Outdoor Research down insulation, you’re ensuring the safety, comfort, and fair treatment of these animals.

Supplier Code of Conduct

Partners throughout our supply chain - like finished goods factories and material input mills - follow a set of guidelines that help us ensure socially responsible operations. This Code of Conduct from the Outdoor Industry Association helps us be clear about our goals as they relate to the safety and wellbeing of workplace employees, as well as the appropriate and safe storage, use, and disposal of chemicals.
