Evans, PhD Dear readers, When we started 2020, I quoted world renown journalist Barbara Walters, who could finally say, “This is 2020.” But after the world events, I shift to give us humor by quoting one of my favorite performers, Dixie Longate, who would say, “Today we’re at February 210th.” Of course, it’s much funner when she does it with her Southern accent holding a Tupperware tumbler.

This month I want to leave you one word: Move. Oh, no, not to move away from South Florida. Quite the opposite, we must build and strengthen our local community so that we have the necessary infrastructure to maintain South Florida as one of (the?) top LGBTQ+ travel destinations in the world.

In an informal qualitative analysis of what I am hearing, on an individual, collective, institutional, and governmental levels, is that we must move to the goals that will create something good out of our “COVID-19 science fiction movie” and away from all things that will exacerbate our current crisis.

Personally, we must move to exercise, a good diet, video content with positive messages, quality time with friends and family (in person or virtually), get involved with organizations, create new financial plans, work on the psychological effects COVID-19 is causing people, and reach out when you need help. Move away from a sedentary lifestyle, unneeded stress, worry about things we cannot control, toxic people and circumstances, closing ourselves in, and maybe a loss of hope for the future.

Globally, our leaders must move to come up with realistic economic plans, utilizing this to fine tune our corporate and governmental practices, and, most of all, provide messages of hope for the people they lead. They must move away from using fear as a motivator, manipulating data to misrepresent the facts, demonstrating a lack of accountability, and not providing the necessary resources for our local, national, and global economies to survive.

We cannot become stagnant nor complacent, but rather utilize this time to move our personal lives, our nations, and our world to a better place. A mentor of mine has said, “Don’t waste your suffering.” Instead, let us move to a brighter and better tomorrow, as we are “Greater together.”

Move forward in hope and anticipation.

n the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that youth around the world have the tools they need to succeed has become more important than ever. One AHF youth program – Girls Act – is doing just that!

As a girl-led program, Girls Act inspires selfconfidence and leadership skills by empowering young women and girls to stay in school and stay healthy by preventing HIV, STIs, and unplanned pregnancies and stay on treatment if they are HIV positive.

"The bond we have formed and the confidence we now have in each other [through Girls Act] are clear examples of the need to support ourselves,’’ said Jenny Wanker, peer leader in the newly established Girls Act chapter in Benue, Nigeria. "I’ve found myself speaking to young ladies my age about their relationships, as they relate to pressures for sex from male counterparts and the importance of safe sex if they can’t abstain. I’m able to draw on real examples from what unprotected sex can lead to aside from the burden of unplanned pregnancies which many of us can relate to."

n Mekahel, underwear model and designer, and reality TV celebrity, is a rising star. He took some time to talk with OutClique. On and I had a very bi-coastal conversation; it was a poolside-to-poolside facetime conversation. We laughed about the virtues of life in LA and South Florida, and we joked about the hurricanes here and the fires there. On joked, “Well, nowhere is perfect.”

This turned out to be a prescient quip as we discussed the double-edged sword of seeking perfection in our personal and creative lives.

Andrew Armano: I’m really glad you had time to talk with me. I love your underwear, Mo Underwear, and I am dying to talk with you about that, but let me start with your show Putting On. I’ve been watching it on Revry TV and it's so much fun. I just want to tell you right off the bat, you have such an honesty about you. And I find that really touching.

On Mekahel: I'm the most shy person you can imagine, even though you wouldn’t know it from my media presence. But, I pushed myself with Putting On and really I opened up so much in Season 2 because of my husband.

He helped me be OK showing the real me.

AA

That is really beautiful. And that's a sign of a really great relationship, when your partner really helps you blossom.

In what ways do you think that he helped you become more open on the camera?

OM

My whole life I was chasing perfection, but he showed me there's no perfect thing in life. Nobody's perfect. Nothing is perfect. He taught me to just love the imperfect, and that's allowed me to open up.

AA OM

It was a process of accepting yourself as you are?

Yes, he showed me it’s OK not to be perfect — he loves me even though I have sides that I'm not proud of. If he

can love me the way I am, then I can accept myself the way I am.

AA

That is so beautiful. How have you grown as a professional since starting your line?

OM

I have a team now and I rely on them. When I started, I did all the designs on my own. It was just me. I didn't ask anybody. I didn’t care about anybody's opinion. But, now, I do care, and I listen to my team and my husband. I'm reaching out to people outside of my office just to make sure that I'm listening to everybody, but not losing myself in the process.

AA

Right. It's an interesting balance, to be open to the feedback, but to remain true to yourself.

OM

That’s what I learned — it will always be my vision at the end of

Tell me a little bit about growing up in Israel.

I'm from a small town next to Tel Aviv, Israel. It's amazing. I need to be all over the world because of my career, but my heart stays back home.

AA

I have been lucky to travel a lot, but Israel is absolutely where I am going next. My favorite episode of Putting On is the one where you and David (husband) visit Israel.

OM

Oh my God you have to go. It's beautiful. Just wait for pride season if you go because that's summer and it's amazing. Before the pandemic started, I was going home every three months to be with my family and friends. Now I haven’t seen them in months, and I'm missing them terribly. My mom just sent me cookies — just arrived 10 minutes before we started talking.

That’s so sweet. My mother used to send me little gifts all the time.

There’s nothing like that. I know you're living in LA right now. How do you like it there? Do you prefer New York over LA?

OM

It's a tough question because I'm a very LA person. I love the glam and the good weather, but New York is in my blood. I moved to New York when I was 20, and it just got my heart.

AA

I totally relate to you because I used to live in Manhattan right after college. It completely shaped the man I became. I love life down here. I love the open air, the sunshine, the water, the ocean, but still there's always that part that misses the city.

OM

Since you said that, here’s a little bit of a scoop for you: for Season 3, we are planning to move back.

AA

That’s exciting! On the topic of your show, I've just been incredibly captivated by you. There are several moments in your show where you made clear, conscious choices to put your husband, family, and treasured friendships ahead of the show and publicity. You chose your personal life over the TV show itself, even when it's not what your producers wanted. I find that very admirable, to be honest. Are those difficult choices, or is it just something that comes second nature to you?

OM

For me, it's not a question. I'm so thankful that the show is taking off and it's my dream come true, but nothing is more important than my family and my husband. My career is my dream, but my relationship and family, that’s my life. So, if I need to choose, it's going to be them before the show. If the producer or the network can't agree on that, I guess it's not meant to be. Career is amazing, money is great, and the more, the better, but not at a price.

I know that living a life in the public eye can be full of challenges, not the least of which to stay grounded.

OM

Sure. There is always drama around me, but I don't let it enter my personal life. Truthfully, there were moments during filming which I could have chosen to create drama for the show. But, I didn’t.

AA

On the career side, tell me a little about your vision for your underwear line for the next couple of years?

OM

I focus on my vision of simple, masculine designs that appeal to all kinds of men combined with a comfortable, practical fit. Making sure my underwear feels good as well as looks good is important. Every sample that I create, we have men of all body types trying them on to see how they fit, look, and feel on all shapes and sizes. All men deserve that.

AA

That's fantastic. My guiding principle as a photographer and writer is that “simple is not easy.” Simple looks easy, but it's actually incredibly difficult, so I have a lot of admiration for what you are doing.

OM

Thank you. I want the designs to appeal to all men, and I want men to feel confident and comfortable with themselves. And nothing's more sexy than that. It doesn't matter if you have muscles, or have a so-called perfect body. I think that this ideal is changing in our community. It used to be about needing muscles and a certain look, and that is not true. It's 2020, let's wake up!

Oh my God, if you have confidence, you are the sexiest.

AA

I really admire that you're conscious that, as a public figure, you are a role model that emanates a sense of joy and inclusiveness.

OM

I love people. I don't want people to be hurt. I am sad when I see how our community sometimes hurts each other with stereotyping or how we treat each other.

I hope to be a part of changing that.

AA

I see a change happening in the gay community, a push to be more inclusive. I'm really encouraged by that.

OM

There is a change, but it just needs to be faster. We need to change, not just talk about it.

AA

I know. You're right. You're right.

I could talk to you for hours. I'm serious. You're just so much fun and so amazing, but I don't want to be rude and monopolize your time too much.

OM AA

Oh my God, stop. I'm having the best day.

The feeling is completely mutual. I hope someday you make it over here to this area.

I'm dying to come to Miami and Florida. It was supposed to happen this summer, but I was like, I can't go. So, hopefully soon we will get a vaccine and then I can be on the plane again. I’m so used to traveling, so I don't know how to be in the same place for more than two weeks, but I'm definitely going to come over and we have to see each other.

AA

THE DANE OF KEY WEST WHO NOT TO MISS AT BOURBON STREET PUB

ey West, Florida’s come-as-you-are party capitol, has been quieted by COVID-19. We still have no idea what the ‘new normal’ will look like anywhere, but especially in the Conch Republic.

The New Orleans House and Bourbon Street venue is working hard to be a part of it. The heart of gay Key West (Sushi the drag queen rings in the New Year by riding down the front of the hotel in a giant high heel shoe), the venerable hotel and club is celebrating its 25th anniversary this fall, and plans to be here for the next 25 years. They’ve turned the challenges of the pandemic into an opportunity to prepare for the future. They’re using the down time to do things that would be hard to do with a packed house. So far they’ve overhauled the bar’s audio/visual equipment, done lots of cosmetic updates to the hotel portion, and next plan to expand both their inside and outside bars.

One of the people who’s been instrumental through the tough times is Dane Majoros.

He’s been in Key West for seven-and-ahalf years, most of it serving up drinks to customers at Bourbon Street Pub. “The day COVID-19 shutdowns began in Florida, March 17, 2020, was my seven year anniversary here,” he told me. The months since that anniversary have been memorable, to say the least. “At Bourbon Street Pub, we have been very fortunate in comparison to other local businesses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The Florida Keys were in a unique situation for the first seven weeks of shutdown. We were closed to everyone except residents.

It gave us the opportunity to learn how to

operate safely with a clientele that we knew and trusted to act accordingly to the situation.”

Since the lowest point, Dane says the bar has doubled staff hours and began operating as a restaurant, not a nightclub.

“Not exactly what we are designed to do, but well within our capabilities. If it’s one thing we have learned through this, it’s that flexibility is crucial.” And even if rules relax, he says they don’t. “We are strict about rule enforcement, we are constantly sanitizing, and when it feels like our crowds are getting to a point they no longer want to comply, we close our doors for the night. Yes, we still have to make money so we can survive, but it’s not worth risking someone's health.”

Dane, like a lot of Floridians, is from somewhere else. He grew up sheltered in a small town in northeast Pennsylvania and says his arrival at Mile 0 wasn’t his idea.

“Honestly, it was a boy who convinced me to move down here. When my ex graduated college with an accounting degree, he wasn’t ready to enter that professional world and wanted to be in a place where he could find himself as part of the gay community. He was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and outed himself to his family while on anesthetics from getting his wisdom teeth out, while I was in the room.

Needless to say that relationship was a constant adventure.”

It wasn’t long before he was a fixture around the club and the island touches his soul. “An old catch phrase about this island long before we were known as ‘One Human Family’ was ‘Key West, Where the Weird Go Pro.’ It’s very true in the most tolerant and accepting way. No one even turns a head at someone letting go of all the fears, anxieties, and socially imposed shame of their normal lives and just letting

themselves be exactly who they are.”

After this much time, Dane is practically a native, but isn’t afraid to let his inner-tourist out every now and then. “Key West is a beautiful place to live. There is never a lack of entertainment no matter what you’re looking for. Being in the nightlife industry though, I try to avoid it in my day-to-day life. When I’m not at work I try to enjoy the water as much as I can. Probably my guiltiest pleasure though is hitching a ride on one of the trolly or conchtrain tours with some drinks (don’t try this at home, they really frown upon it - I was kicked off a Ghost Tour once for some unfortunate loudness). Every operator has a different and quirky way to tell you about some of Key West’s very eclectic past. It’s a lot of fun to have a tourist day every now and then, and the businesses are so generous and supportive in making their amenities affordable to those that live here.”

Being part of a community has helped Dane, and everyone, get through. “Our local community as a whole has been very supportive and there will never be words to express how thankful we are for their generosity. Some of us didn’t have a choice but to work and would not have survived without them. We worked very hard in the beginning (and still do) to make sure our locals knew that keeping them safe was our first priority.”

As for what’s next at Bourbon Street Pub? Dane says innovation is already underway.

“We’ve added new dancer boxes throughout the bar that allow them to remain appropriately distanced.” In the end, Dane and the Bourbon Street staff say whatever the ‘new normal’ is, you’ll be able to find it there. “We’ve made plans, upon plans, upon plans for how we will operate once restrictions are lifted again.

Honestly though, it’s a lot of day-by-day changes, keeping up with new restrictions.

The world is changing, and we’re gonna change with it!”

istory Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “The Art of Tim Forman: Beachscapes” from Sunday, July 5 – Sunday, September 27, 2020. Forman’s colorful and impressionist coastal-inspired works will be on display at The New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue, Fort Lauderdale).

“We’re thrilled to welcome back one of Fort Lauderdale’s most prolific landscape artists and paintbrush historians to History Fort Lauderdale,” said Patricia Zeiler, executive director of History Fort Lauderdale. “Tim Forman’s masterful interpretations of Florida beach life and inspirational ocean views instill a sense of serenity and wonder; much needed during this tumultuous time. We invite residents and visitors of all ages to safely explore the beauty and majesty of our world.”

The grandson of renowned Davie dairy farmer, Hamilton Forman, Tim grew up in South Florida. Some of his favorite pastimes were visiting the beach, fishing in Biscayne Bay with his dad, and stargazing. He first picked-up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his

pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives.

In compliance with local and state health guidelines, visitors will be required to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing of six feet apart. Hand sanitizer will be available at the front desk admission point and all surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned multiple times a day. Additionally, guests will be asked to sign-in, daily, for contact tracing.

Entry to the exhibit is free with general admission - $15 for adults; $12 for seniors; $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). nsuring your home in Florida is not cheap, and there is a good reason for our high rates. According to the Insurance Information Institute, in 2019 the state of Florida reported over $36 million in home loss claims, just behind California and Texas. You should not be rushed or forced to sign anything until you understand the true impact a claim can have.

The insurance carrier appears to be delaying your claim. This often happens when major

catastrophes create claims log-jams. In many cases we have seen insurance companies fly in adjusters from out of state who do not understand state law. In all states, insurance carriers are required to respond to you and process your claim in a specified time period.

The insurance carriers settlement offer appears to be inadequate based on your coverage. Unfortunately, insurance company

adjusters and carriers do not always act in

the best interest of their policyholders. They are in business to turn a profit and may value damages to your property differently than you.

Or, they may determine that you are not covered for some of the damage. Sometimes offers will not even approach the value of restoring the damaged property. This is where an expert who uses the same estimating software as the insurance carrier and understands insurance policy language can help.

Your insurance claims adjuster is discouraging you from hiring a public insurance adjuster.

Insurance claims representatives that are afraid to deal with a licensed professional may be a red flag. You should be the only one determining if hiring your own public adjuster makes sense and is worth the cost.

What does it cost to hire a public adjuster?

Public adjusters charge a percentage of the settlement for their service to you. The public adjuster is not paid until you are paid. There are no upfront fees for their services. Percentages vary from adjuster to adjuster, so it is best to shop for the best adjuster for you. The maximum percentage that a public adjuster in Florida can charge for a claim is 20% of the claim paid after you sign the contract with them. In the event of a declared emergency by the Governor's office, that fee is reduced to 10% for any claim made in the first year after the date of loss. After the first year, the maximum amount that can be charged reverts back to 20%.

As with all hires, if you are placing your trust in a professional to assist you, review their record and find a public adjuster that has proven experience with your issues and objective confirmation of their expertise. You may want to start on www.BBB.org/SEFL and find a BBB accredited public adjuster. Check them out on other sites like Google and Yelp, ask for references, and, again, review their specific experience and outcomes working with situations similar to your own. Only sign the contract after you are confident and comfortable that you have a real partner with the experience and track record to help you fully resolve your claim.

From movies to concerts to stage productions, just about everything entertaining is cancelled, likely until sometime in 2021. Theaters are designed to entertain as many people at once, which means social-distancing is a challenge, so even when we can stage live entertainment, packed houses are still a long way off. This puts an extra burden on local, independent productions and stages.

Darcy Beeman is a local financial guru who’s asking the community to join her in helping the iconic Island City Stage in Wilton Manors.

We tried every sport, but one day she had a paint brush in her hand and suddenly she introduced me to a new world. She, Addison, loves to perform and has taken classes at the Broward Center. She has taken art classes and had her art displayed at Fat Village. As I became more aware I began to realize the impact that all forms of art has on so many people. I have sponsored exhibits and events with Stonewall and NSU Art Museum over the past several years. It’s a great way to give back to the community.”

Since social distancing means no “packed houses” for a while, her financial expertise informs her on how the business community (sponsors), who have to recover themselves, can help and partner with the arts community going forward.

“There are so many ways to create a

win-win. I think we all just need to start talking more and get creative about how we can combine our resources in ways that benefit everyone. The arts are a way to bring people together, and even when we can't physically be together, we are connected. Businesses could sponsor organization websites or web events, or start a matching campaign as I did. It all creates communication, connection, and awareness. Whether you are a for profit or non-profit organization, this is what we are all after.”

With her child as inspiration, Darcy knows the future of the arts is important. “I love exploring the arts with my daughter. It is something we can experience and enjoy together. I also feel that teaching kids about philanthropy when they are young leaves a lasting impact that helps to create long term change.”

Fort Lauderdale native Steven Teller to create a public installation in Wilton Manors

Teller's application and submission ranked highest among more than 90 artists who competed for selection by the ArtServecoordinated jury. Criteria included a statement of artistic vision, a demonstration of technical skill, creativity and relevance of design, and overall impression of the artist and their work.

"Steven's artwork is beautiful and inspiring.

It elicits positive emotions and a sense of unity that will be a beacon of joy shared by The Equality Park residents, tenants and neighbors for generations to come," said Ed King, part of the ArtServe team that crafted the call for artists and chose the winner. "We take our role very seriously when it comes to being a 'seed planter' and facilitator of paid opportunities to further our artists' careers, since integrating them with the business community affords substantial economic development for all. The mural project checked all of those boxes and ArtSeve is profoundly grateful to have been selected as The Pride Center's partner."

rtServe and The Pride Center have selected Fort Lauderdale native and talented artist Steven Teller to create the design for a nearly 3,000-sq.-ft. mural that will enliven the walls of The Pride Center and The Residences at Equality Park in Wilton Manors. As one of the nation's largest LGBTQ+ community centers, The Pride Center's fiveand-a-half-acre Equality Park campus will be home to The Residences at Equality Park, Florida's very first affordable housing community with customized support services for LGBTQ+ seniors. Highly visible from Dixie Highway, a busy urban corridor in the heart of Broward, these murals will transform the Equality Park campus into a vibrant public art destination.

ArtServe will now work with Teller and The Pride Center's technical team on the mural's physical installation. "It's really surprising how much math and science art entails," King added.

"Historically, between 1,000 and 2,000 people have utilized services on our campus daily," said The Pride Center's CEO, Robert Boo. "The Equality Park campus serves as a vibrant, vital hub for the community - a welcoming, inclusive, popular public-space for engagement and interaction. I am so incredibly excited to witness the positive and uplifting impact that Steven Teller's signature style of bright and imaginative creativity infused with deep meaning will bring, not only to this space, but to the entire community. Clients and visitors use the outdoor spaces on campus to enjoy lunch, meet a neighbor, host weddings, gather for candlelight vigils, throw parties, chat with a sponsor, memorialize a loved one, and listen to live music."

To fully absorb and invoke the essence of The Pride Center and Equality Park in his creative process, the 30- year-old Teller is currently

interviewing diverse members of the local LGBTQ+ community to educate himself on its impact and better understand the importance and relevance of LGBTQ+ community centers like The Pride Center, which has been serving South Florida for more than 27 years.

"The more I learn about the world around me, the more I tend to notice similar points being drawn. When I connect the dots, the visual elements of my artwork begin to emerge," Teller explained about his plan for the mural's ultimate content, which he envisions will come to life with symbolic elements of The Pride Center community's growth reflected through his trademark use of bright, harmonious colors evocative of nature and florals intertwined in a geometric, abstract space.

Teller, who is a graduate of American Heritage in Plantation and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia, expects his working design to be ready for digitization by mid-August 2020, with final installation of the metal panels scheduled for September.

To install the mural, which will be crafted from metal sheets onto which Teller's art will be printed, an architect first must delineate the specifications. Equipped with those measurements and working from his studio in St. Augustine, Teller will then create the actual artwork, which will be photographed, digitized, transferred to metal sheets, and installed on The Pride Center façade, which comprises 1,245 sq. ft. of The Pride Center's existing Schubert Building and 1,535 sq. ft. of The Residences at Equality Park.

SPIRITUAL RE-EVALUATION

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has changed us. It has caused deaths of dear loved ones. It has put people into the hospital praying for recovery. We live with fear of being tested and waiting for the test results. It has changed every aspect of how hospitals and all essential workers navigate their callings every day. It has changed every single one of our lives on a daily basis! It feels like it has dominated so much of our lives over the last six months, and you know how much we like change!

How has it changed us spiritually? How has it changed the church? Even though this pandemic has been catastrophic in so many ways, it has brought us a time to re-evaluate what is truly important to us. It has brought us to appreciate what we had taken for granted so often.

I live four miles from the church. I travel back and forth to my home numerous times often.

On that trip home and to the church I see change. Where I would never see families in their front yards playing with their children, I now see that often. It touches my heart to see parents playing with their children outside their homes and spending intentional meaningful time together.

I pass by the Hunters Nightclub parking lot and see numerous volunteers weekly providing food to those who are hungry. The volunteers come from the community to help and show their love. One’s faith beliefs are personal and not an issue. People of all faiths come together. Love happens.

Chef Howie from The Pub continues to deliver hundreds of meals to shut-ins. Our community cares and is INCLUSIVE!

How has the church changed? We now offer “online worship services” only. The number of people watching the weekly service has grown 400%. For safety reasons, one person at the time comes in to record (tape) their section of the service. Congregational care of the members and friends of the church is even stronger at this point as we have teams of people who volunteer to call and check on others. Our Christian Education series has tripled in attendance through the use of Zoom and this month’s focus is on racism. Our church can no longer host 150 people per week, but we have found safe ways to cook food and deliver it to those who are hungry. The church building may be closed for Sunday morning, but CHURCH continues to happen!

We are being “reminded” that church is not the building, but it is the people. That is a change that was needed. When the focus is on helping others, this pandemic empowers people to use their gifts and grow in their relationship with God. This pandemic has reminded us why it is so important to care for our neighbors. And when we do that, we grow spiritually. Our love grows and our spiritual relationship with our higher power grows. Change happens.

lorida Medical Center (FMC) earned the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

FMC earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidencebased guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

“Florida Medical Center is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our stroke patients by implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines - Stroke initiative,” said Jeffrey M. Welch, hospital CEO. “The tools and resources provided help us track and measure our success in meeting evidenced-based clinical guidelines developed to improve patient outcomes. It is important not to ignore the symptoms of a stroke, and if you think you or a loved one are having a stroke, call 911.”

NEW BEGINNING

A

fter twenty years of building a strong image and career, it has all been essentially erased. Everywhere you turn a new story of the end appears. A time of loss for some, a time of despair for others.

Yes, it is a tough time. However, as I sit and think about what has happened and what is the next move, I cannot help but ponder this is not an end. I am realizing that this is actually a new beginning.

In the last six months I have seen my main job become a dust palace. What was once a hustle bustle type environment, where people were having fun and escaping their everyday woes, has become a ghost lounge. An empty room where the tables are desolate and the stages are empty, with no music, no party. Oh how I miss it.

In addition to seeing the ghost house of my job, I also had the unfortunate event of having the gym where I train children to run up walls, climb ropes, and pick up new skills for everyday life come to a screeching halt and shut its doors permanently. This is undoubtedly a rough time for just about everyone. Noticing that so many doors have closed, but there are still windows.

As these two chapters slowly resolve to an end, I cannot say I am at an end. The new beginning is here. With the closing of some doors, I was forced to think how to break open the window.

I took my skills as an entertainer and child care with my passion for healthy living and twisted them together to start a new venture. To be creative is key in times where opportunities

are seldom. As the time at home increases, the time spent on learning new skills and honing old traits comes into practice. It is time to apply the skills in a new way.

Just like me, during this pandemic, many have lost quite a bit of their lives. Many are at a point of desperation. Panic is setting in. However, with rational thinking we can all overcome these hardships. Remember, creativity is important, limiting language is unnecessary. Focused on an end is focused on the past. The past cannot resolve the future, only action can propel you to the next level.

By stating this is the end of an era can imply that there might not be something ahead. In turn, if you say this is a new start, then you will have a path to build, and the possibilities are endless. Even though times are difficult and it has not been easy to see a silver lining, there is some light at the end of this tunnel.

In the end, we will be on a road to rebuilding.

On that road we will see that we not only have come out stronger and smarter, but we also have come out with a new beginning.

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS TO CONDOMS IN INDIA

t’s hard to ignore a 30-foot inflatable condom! And that is what has stolen the show at multiple World AIDS Day events and has become a catalyst for an advocacy success story in Mizoram—a conservative state in northeastern India with the highest rate of HIV prevalence in the country.

Faith-based organizations (FBOs) in Mizoram, which were previously unreceptive to the promotion of condoms due to religious beliefs, have helped chart a new course towards encouraging condom use for HIV and STI prevention among youth in the region, along with its most vulnerable populations. The change was the result of years of persistent advocacy, including anti-stigma campaigns and sensitization efforts by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) India Cares.

"Participation and collaboration with FBOs was crucial in HIV interventions, and especially for reaching large communities with impactful messages to correct misconceptions and influence attitudes to promote positive behavior changes," said Dr. V. Sam Prasad, AHF India Cares Country Program Director.

"Our condom advocacy, including supplying dispensers at local markets that improve condom access to the community, has helped to change antiquated Mizoram church policies and opened the door for approaches to stem the flow of new HIV infections – this is truly a remarkable change!"

The HIV prevalence rate among adults in 2017 was estimated at .22% nationally, but Mizoram, which has a population of 1.5 million people and shares porous borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, had the highest HIV prevalence of any state at just over 2%. A study conducted earlier this year also revealed that more than 67% of new HIV infections in the region were transmitted through unprotected sex.

"LOVE condoms have played an important role in reducing HIV prevalence due to their availability, accessibility, and high acceptance among the general population," said Mizoram State AIDS Control Society Joint Director (IEC) Ms. Zuiliani Hrahsel.

"We truly appreciate the continuous support of AHF India Cares in continuing to provide condoms and promote them since 2017."

To date, AHF has donated 800,000 condoms to Mizoram and 1.4 million nationwide. AHF India Cares has worked in the country since 2004 and currently provides HIV care and treatment services to 2,692 clients.

FOOD DISTRIBUTION REACHES FAMILIES IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

our months after the novel COVID-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic, millions of people around the world, especially the most marginalized communities, continue to be left without the most basic provisions.

But one community-based organization in the Dominican Republic (DR), with support from the AHF Fund, has gone above and beyond to deliver over 1,000 food, medicine, and other necessity rations to impoverished residents throughout 10 bateyes (pronounced BAH-tay, meaning shanty-town settlements, home to mostly Haitian migrant workers and their families). The deliveries were made after Light a Candle Foundation (FEUL) prioritized the most isolated bateyes that had no access to food, pharmacies, or health facilities.

"Even before the pandemic, many people in bateyes were forced to live day-by-day, selling items on the street, in a market or through daily manual labor," said Massiel Ruiz, AHF Dominican Republic Country Program Manager.

“But now, migrants are not permitted to work like before due to COVID-19. They receive no government assistance as a safety net, and the small stores and food vendors have all gone away. We applaud FEUL’s efforts—they have made a tremendous difference in people’s lives with this much-needed support."

reach more than 800 families with education on COVID-19 prevention and items ranging from rice, beans, and flour to protective masks, vitamins, and soap. Condoms were also distributed to sexually active people over the age of 17 and to heads of families who were not using contraceptives.

"In addition to residents being extremely vulnerable economically, they also have no access to health services or condoms," added Ruiz. "By partnering with FEUL we have helped share the importance of HIV prevention through education, testing, and condom distribution. We hope to be able to continue providing condoms via dispensers, as well as educational materials within bateyes to increase awareness of HIV/STI prevention measures."

Bateyes were first created in the early 1900s when Haitian sugar cane cutters would cross the DR border in hopes of finding work.

Today, these settlements remain largely unchanged—most still do not have bathrooms or electricity, potable water, and education and healthcare services are rare.

ith substance abuse among Zambian youth becoming increasingly high, AHF Fund grant recipient Serenity Wellness Center has partnered with AHF Zambia to pair HIV testing and counseling services with Serenity’s 30-day in-residence rehabilitation programs for substance abuse. The initiative is slated to run from June through December of this year, 2020.

"This partnership is focusing primarily on youth who are struggling with substance abuse, since drug use and higher rates of HIV infection often go hand-in-hand," said Maambo Mweemba, AHF Zambia Advocacy & Policy Manager. "We’re proud to work with Serenity to show that there can be innovative ways to deliver HIV services outside of traditional methods and clinic settings. I’m confident that these youth will complete their programs and gain the

confidence to be more productive in their communities."

Serenity Wellness Center is currently the only known private organization providing rehabilitation services in Zambia, which is typically handled by the government.

"Helping substance abusers has not been a high priority among donors in Zambia, as there is more focus on prosecuting than reforming through rehabilitation," added AHF Zambia Country Program Manager Dr. Mabvuto Kango. "But, with help from the AHF Fund, this joint venture with Serenity will help keep youth HIV-free and deter them from using harmful substances that hamper their success and further endanger their lives."

AHF has been working in Zambia since 2007 and currently provides HIV care and treatment to 86,609 registered clients.

ur Fund Foundation announced the launch of Arts Proud, a newly created campaign to support its various arts and cultural grantees that have been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The mission for the Arts Proud campaign is to sustain the arts within South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community and create a springboard for the non-profit agencies to “re-stART” and flourish postpandemic.

Earlier this summer, Our Fund formed a coalition of LGBTQ+ cultural institutions such as the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida, Island City Stage, Miami Gay Men's Chorus, OUTshine Film Festival, South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, Thinking Cap Theatre, Thou Art Woman, and the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus which has essentially served as a South Florida LGBTQ+ arts collective and support group.

The agencies meet virtually on a regular basis to combine efforts, share and pool resources, and recently began to explore opportunities to reduce costs by leveraging scale and realizing joint savings as a means to preserve financial resources.

“The Arts Proud campaign name succinctly encapsulates what we are trying to accomplish – safeguarding the diverse LGBTQ+ arts and cultural institutions which over the decades have shaped South Florida into one of the most vibrant and eclectic arts and cultural centers in the country,” said David Jobin, Our Fund Foundation president & CEO. “In order for this to happen we need the LGBTQ+ community to continue to support these struggling arts and cultural organizations so they can continue provide safe spaces for enjoyment, connection, and reflection.”

For decades, South Florida’s performing arts scene has provided first-class entertainment and a powerful sense of belonging for diverse and multicultural audiences. Whether attending a live musical event, a play, concert, film, dance revue, or other type of performance, the communal element offers the LGBTQ+ community a place to socialize, celebrate, and learn.

“Over the past months, we've seen how powerful and versatile the arts can be. People around the world have used visual arts like photography, painting, and film, as well as spoken word and music to bring attention to important social justice causes or celebrate and thank our essential workers,” said G Wright Muir, founder and executive director of Thou Art Women. “Art is a universal language, a means to reach out and connect within one another and express our humanity."

“Until we are able to once again perform on stage in front of a live audience, we need to remind people and help them understand why the arts are so vital to the LGBTQ+ community in particular and how intricately connected art is to preserving our identity and sharing our relevant and powerful stories,” said Marty Childers, managing director of Island City Stage.

“There’s been extensive research that proves the arts build community, bridge cultural divides, and fuel economic growth.

This is needed now, more than ever,” said Anthony Cabrera, artistic director of the Miami Gay Men's Chorus. “Our choral performers cannot wait for the day until we can join voices as one. Until then, we remain committed to our craft and to our loyal supporters. We’ve formed a united front and want to assure our patrons that we will be back and ready to ‘re-stART’ when it’s safe to do so.”

The SMART Ride (The Southern Most AIDS/ HIV Ride), November 20-22, 2020, has reimagined this year’s 17th annual event to meet the challenges of the current pandemic. While COVID-19 has changed the way we are able to get together, our cause and goal remains the same. Q-MUSIC: THE PRESENT IS FEMALE (AND QUEER)

s horrible as 2020 has been on so many fronts, at least we’ve had amazing music by queer female artists to help us get through it all. Where would we be without Becca Mancari’s The Greatest Part, Jamie Wyatt’s Neon Cross, Indigo Girls’ Look Long, Gordi’s Our Two Skins, Katie Pruitt’s Expectations, and the 35th anniversary deluxe reissue of Whitney Houston’s eponymous debut album (somebody had to say it!)?

Singer/songwriter Caroline Rose’s 2018 album Loner was one of the best albums of that year, and any year, for that matter. The concept LP follow-up Superstar (New West) delivers on the promise of its predecessor and then some. On Loner, Rose hinted at some of the subject matter she explores more fully on Superstar. Maintaining her humor and musical inventiveness throughout, these 11 songs are witty and woke observations of ambition, independence, abandon, identity, and affection.

Thankfully, the songs, including catchy opener “Nothing’s Impossible,” the retro discooriented “Do You Think We’ll Last Forever?” (a song that wouldn’t be out of place on the new Jessie Ware album), the funky fresh “Feel The Way I Want,” the freaky “Freak Like Me,” and the hallucinatory “I Took A Ride” and “Pipe Dreams” stand on their own, whether or not you are sticking with the concept.

L.A.-based quartet Girl Friday wins for best album title Androgynous Mary (Hardly Art), for an album whose cover photo depicts what can be best described as an old school butch. As for the music within, Girl Friday has been doing its homework, successfully merging riot grrrl sensibilities with those of groundbreaking acts such as The Raincoats and Kleenex/LiliPUT on the ten songs, including the standouts “Amber’s Knees: A Matter of Concern,” “What We Do It For,” “Gold Stars,” “I Hope Jason Is Happy,” and “Clotting.” How can you go wrong

with lyrics such as “I just wanna feel like and earthquake/Everything is boring for fuck’s sake” (from the song “Earthquake”)?

Feel Feelings (Babycat/Because), the new LP by French actress and singer/songwriter Soko (an ex of Kristen Stewart’s!) effortlessly crosses modern pop (“Are You A Magician?,” “Let Me Adore,” “Now What?”) with retro French pop (“Blasphémie,” “Looking For Love,” “Replaceable Heads”) giving the whole record a timeless quality. “Oh, To Be A Rainbow!” is the most delicate of sexy queer songs. Soko, who lands somewhere between Becca Mancari and Cate LeBon, has crafted an emotional and personal set of songs, hence the title, but we never feel like voyeurs.

Instead, Soko wants us to listen, to connect, and, if possible, to relate.

Chicago-based singer/songwriter and activist Xoe Wise puts her money where her mouth is. Sales from her new album Air (www.

XoeWiseMusic.com) benefits the Brave Space Alliance, Chicago’s first Black-led and transled LGBTQ+ center. Wise, who has a pleasant and powerful voice, works in a more traditional singer/songwriter mode, as you can hear on the songs “Park Too Close,” “Blanking,” and “Madison.” Just as things threaten to become a little monotonous, we get the percolating “Bad Idea,” as well as “Holiday.”

Borders, the 2018 LP by Norwegian singer/ songwriter Fay Wildhagen, was nominated for a couple of Spellemannprisen awards (aka Norway’s version of a Grammy). It’s a gorgeous record, buoyed by Wildhagen’s distinctive vocal delivery, that deserves to be heard.

Wildhagen’s 2020 follow-up is the seven-song vinyl EP Leave Me to the Moon (Live in Oslo) (Warner Music Norway). Of the seven songs, four – “When I Let Go,” “Life of Pi,” “___Awake,” and the title cut are from Borders.
