Resolutions: Taking Charge of Your Health Most people think of Latinos Salud as the place to go for PrEP or HIV treatment. However, many patients have found unexpected benefits that go far beyond the initial purpose for the visit, as this month’s stories reveal.

Patient experience as told by Kensy Chavez, DNP, APRN, FNP-C I attended to a 34-year-old man from Honduras who had come to our clinic after a painful breakup. He had just ended a three year relationship after discovering his partner had been unfaithful, and fear set in. He wasn’t feeling sick, but his trust had been shaken. He wanted STI testing and to start PrEP so he could protect himself moving forward.

During his initial visit, something unexpected happened.

As part of our routine intake, we checked his blood pressure once, then again. Both readings were high.

When we asked about his medical history, he admitted he hadn’t seen a doctor in years. He felt fine, so he never thought he needed to.

Further evaluation confirmed the diagnosis: Essential Hypertension, which is when someone has high blood pressure without any single cause. He was shocked.

He had come in worried about HIV, but instead learned he had a silent condition that, left untreated, could lead to heart attack, stroke, or kidney disease. That day, we didn’t just talk about PrEP; we talked about his life, his stress, his future, and his health beyond one test result.

We started treatment, adjusted his lifestyle, and followed him closely. Today, his blood pressure is controlled, he remains HIV negative, and he feels stronger and more in control of his health than ever before.

He often says he’s grateful he didn’t choose an online PrEP service with no in-person medical providers able to actually evaluate him, because a simple visit for HIVprevention ended up catching an unexpected condition that could have quietly impacted his life forever.

Patient experience as told by Guillermo Navarro, APRN, AGNP-C My patient, a 52-year-old Latino man living with HIV, came to Latinos Salud for his routine follow-up. He had been doing well on treatment, with a stable viral load and no major complaints. He mentioned feeling “a little tired lately,” but like many patients juggling work and life stress, he didn’t think much of it. What he did not know was that something far more serious was quietly developing.

As part of his routine labs, we checked his metabolic panel and A1C (a blood test that measures average blood sugar in the last three months). His results showed significantly elevated fasting glucose and an

Because unmanaged diabetes can worsen rapidly, especially in patients living with HIV, we immediately started him on medicine and connected him to a specialist and coordinated his care. Within days, he started on appropriate diabetic medications and received education on nutrition and glucose monitoring. We worked closely with him and his endocrinologist to adjust his treatment plan as needed.

Three months later, his labs told the story, his A1C had dropped sharply, his glucose levels were improving daily, and he reported feeling more energetic than he had in years.

He had come in simply to stay on top of his HIV care, but by being engaged in care, he discovered a condition he never knew he had. And getting him connected early in this way likely prevented far more serious complications down the road.

Patient experience as told by Daikel Martinez, DNP, APRN, FNP-C A 22-year-old Latino gay man came into our Miami SW clinic, hoping to start on PrEP. He had recently ended a long-term relationship and anticipated becoming more sexually active with new partners. He explained that he wanted to “stay protected from the start.” During the intake, I asked the usual screening questions—were there any recent symptoms, exposures, or concerns? He shook

his head and repeated that he “just wanted the PrEP medication,” nothing more.

We completed the consultation and reviewed what to expect with the testing. As I wrapped up, I told him, “Once all your results are ready, I’ll call you.” He hesitated for the first time. “I’m sure something’s going to come back bad,” he said quietly. When I asked why he felt that way, he confessed that he had noticed a small, painless sore on his penis about a week earlier. He had been too embarrassed to mention it, and part of his motivation for starting PrEP was to get tested for STIs without having to bring it up directly.

I asked if he felt comfortable letting me examine the area. The moment I saw the lesion, the picture became clear: a classic, well-demarcated chancre—highly suggestive of primary syphilis. I immediately counseled him on how syphilis is easily transmitted, and provided treatment right away with Bicillin injection to prevent progression and complications. He also left that same day with his PrEP regimen initiated, feeling both relieved and supported.

Had he walked out without speaking up – or if he had used one of the mail-order PrEP providers that does not include STD screening in its service – his infection would have progressed silently. Instead, a simple conversation prevented a more serious stage of the disease—and reminded him that having a trusted care provider and feeling safe to speak about his concerns truly matters.

More Than a Run Meet Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale

For 36 years, Front Runners & Walkers Fort Lauderdale has served as an inclusive LGBTQ-friendly fitness community in Broward County, offering weekly runs, social activities, and outreach.

“There is an umbrella organization, but we are the local chapter, and our chapter has been in existence for 36 years,” said Eric Runyan, president of the Front Runners and Walkers Fort Lauderdale chapter.

Founded in San Francisco during a 1970s movement to create inclusive running spaces, the network expanded globally. “Frontrunners itself started in California in a group called Lavender U,” Runyan said, noting that the name came from Patricia Nell Warren’s novel The Front Runner.

Runyan joined 15 years ago after friends invited him, later becoming social coordinator and then president. “I mean, I've been a runner my whole life,” he said.

The nonprofit hosts three weekly runs and monthly social events at locations in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. The largest is the Wednesday night meetup at Holiday Park. “We’re also a very seasonal club, you know?” Runyan said. “It’s hot here in the summer, so

in the winter it's not unusual for us to have 60 people.”

Weekend runs include a Saturday meet-up at the Galleria Mall and a Sunday run at the Pride Center. After each run, the group goes out to eat. “There is a little joke that we’re really a dining club that has a running problem,” Runyan said.

Participants can attend casually or become members, with dues of $40 annually, a $20 youth rate, and a financial hardship option.

Inclusivity is central to the club. “When people show up… we pair them up with somebody that can guide them along the routes,” Runyan said. Walkers stay together, and beginners can join the nine-week Couch to 5K program.

“We take people from being non-runners… and get them ready for the race,” he said.

Runyan said the club also helps counter ageism and sportsrelated trauma some LGBTQ+ people have experienced.

“It's just a great way for people to become familiar with everything that Broward County and Fort Lauderdale has to offer for the LGBTQ community,” Runyan said.

Dismantling The “New Year New Me”’ Mindset That Can Lead To Anxiety And Perfectionism

As the calendar turns, the world begins its familiar chorus: "New Year, New Me." It's marketed as a fresh start, a push to become better, stronger, happier. But for many in the LGBTQ+ community already navigating identity exploration, societal pressures, and burnout, this message can feel like a demand to be someone different.

The unspoken suggestion is that who you are right now isn't enough which can fuel anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and perfectionistic standards.

This January, instead of reinventing yourself, consider dismantling the belief that a "new you" is required at all. What if the goal wasn't radical change, but deeper presence?

Perfectionism Disguised as Self-Improvement A desire to "be better" can morph into criticism when progress isn't instant. For LGBTQ+ individuals facing rejection or identity-related stress, perfectionism reinforces doubts: ● "I should be further along." ● "I shouldn't still struggle with this." ● "Everyone else seems more confident."

Focusing on your present self can be grounding and empowering.

Mindfulness in the Moment Mindfulness is the gentle act of returning to yourself, your senses, emotions, and truth without judgment. It creates space between you and intrusive thoughts so they don't spiral into fear or regret.

Tools to help: 1. Five Senses Reset - Anchor into sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste to quiet mental noise.

2. Naming the Thought - Label fear or perfectionism to create distance and regain control.

3. Self-Compassion - Offer yourself the kindness you'd give a friend: "It's okay to feel this."

4. Mindfulness Boundaries - Rest, unplug, say no.

Protecting your energy is survival, not selfishness A Different Kind of New Year Honor the version of you that has carried you this far.

Growth doesn't require perfection only awareness, patience, and presence. You are already worthy, whole, and enough.

The Fitness Secrets Behind Fort Lauderdale’s Mermaid Queen

At B Ocean Resort’s legendary Wreck Bar, mermaid queen Holly Wood spends hours training to make every flip, swirl, and breath-hold look natural. She let us in on the fitness, recovery, and wellness routines that keep her performing at her best.

1. Performing underwater looks magical - but it’s also serious physical work. What kind of training or fitness routine helps you stay “mermaid strong”?

Fitness has always been a central part of my life and career. Over the years, I’ve incorporated strength training, yoga, aerial dance, and running into my routine.

A strong core, cardio endurance, and solid lung capacity are essential—not just for performing as a mermaid, but for anyone working underwater.

Right now, my weekly routine includes Pilates, aerial dance (primarily silks and lyra), running, and corefocused workouts with lots of stretching. It keeps me agile and “Mermaid Strong” for the Wreck Bar shows and my other performance-based events.

2. How do you take care of your body and recover

after shows, especially with all that swimming, breath-holding, and resistance?

After every performance, I follow my essential Mermaid Care Routine: eye, ear, and sinus cleaning, and deep conditioning for my hair. For physical recovery, I focus on good nutrition, quality sleep, and regular stretching.

I also schedule bodywork sessions and spend time at the Russian bathhouse on my days off to restore and rejuvenate.

3. Do you follow any particular wellness routines that support your lifestyle as a performer?

I like to joke that I follow the "Mermaid Diet!" I don’t eat dairy or meat, only seafood, healthy carbs, fats, and lots of veggies.

4. What’s your go-to advice for people looking to dive into fitness in the new year?

I would say to anyone looking to dive into their Fitness Routine Mermaid style-or otherwise, the best thing to do is just get started! Find something you love and are passionate about and take the first step or swim, let momentum take you forward and turn it into discipline.

The creation of Miami Beach residents, Wanderlust Café & Lounge is intended to be a place where locals can socialize, enjoy high-quality food and drinks while experiencing curated entertainment. The business combines a unique fusion of American comfort food with international flavors, art deco glamour and tropical flair.

“This pop-up program helps activate underused spaces and energize our neighborhoods,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “It’s another way we are supporting our business community and driving a stronger local economy.”

The cafeì is located at 1200 Washington Ave. in South Beach and features dishes like cheese curds with garlic and coriander sauce, homemade guacamole, and aromatic steak, chicken, burger and sandwich creations.

By Chandler Scott Jafar, Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors 2026, begins his reign, embodying resilience, identity, and gratitude. In this OutClique® interview, Jafar discusses his title, his mission, and the responsibility of representing South Florida’s historic leather community.

Chandler: When your name was announced as Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors 2026, what went through your mind?

Jafar: Looking back at that night, I can relive every second of being on stage hearing my name announced as the 2026 Mr. Eagle of Wilton Manors. Standing on that stage, holding hands with the amazing contestants who have now become my friends, I listened as Chuck announced the second runner-up, then the first runner-up. When my name wasn’t called, I was almost sure I hadn’t made it, but then I heard, “The 2026 Mr. Eagle is contestant number 4,” and I couldn’t believe it. Is this really happening? Are my ears confused? What?!

The judges really believed in me! For the first time in my life, I truly felt seen for being my authentic self. I was in awe and disbelief. My hands went to my face; I wanted to make sure I was real and awake, and it turned out, yes, it was 100% real.

The roar from the crowd drowned out every doubt. I felt such a rush of emotions. I wanted to burst into tears and also smile and rejoice in that moment. It was surreal being cheered and celebrated; that was not my norm growing up. My achievements were never acknowledged like that.

No matter how well I did, it was never enough. In that moment at the Eagle, I finally felt enough.

Chandler: Everyone has a “leather origin story.” What first drew you into leather culture?

Jafar: For me, as far back as I can remember, I’ve always felt an attraction to leather itself. I recall being maybe 3 or 4 years old, rolling over one of my dad’s leather jackets. All I wanted was to touch it, feel it, and wear it. That attraction never went away. As I grew older, I became fixated every time I saw a man wearing a leather jacket.

I didn’t understand it until my teen years, when I wanted to explore that side of myself more. I started buying leather garments whenever I could and scoured thrift stores for anything I could find and afford. Then came the internet, I discovered Google around 2004/2005, and I started

searching for leather-related content. I wondered, is someone else like me?

Slowly, I came across articles and random information about people who were as interested in leather as I was. From there, I kept getting deeper into the world of leather and kink. At the same time, I noticed my attraction to men. I tried to justify it by telling myself I only liked the leather they were wearing, but eventually I had to accept that I was attracted to both the men and their leather. That’s when I knew that’s who I wanted to be.

I also saw on TV and in movies that the “bad guys” were often portrayed in leather. Biker police officers wearing long black boots and tight uniforms sparked intense feelings in me. I felt that bad-boy, biker, uniformed energy within myself. The rest is history.

Chandler: What does holding the Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors title represent for you?

Jafar: It’s a huge honor and responsibility. For me, this title represents a platform to channel my love for this community and be an element of change. I always felt like an outsider, an outcast, but this title places me in the center of the LGBTQIA+ community, specifically the leather community.

I feel responsible for making the community’s voice heard. I see myself as Mr. Eagle of Wilton Manors, a key representative of this community to the world, channeling everyone’s stories, wins, and love to those beyond our local space.

I want to bring people together by hosting socials and fundraisers that benefit the LGBTQIA+ community and collaborate with key community members as much as I can.

Chandler: What do you hope your legacy as Mr. Eagle Wilton Manors 2026 will be?

Jafar: I hope to be remembered for my welcoming and loving personality, for providing comfort and safety to those in our community who feel alone or like they don’t belong.

If I can empower even one person in the LGBTQIA+ or leather community, I will consider that a great achievement. I want people to look back and say, “Jafar truly cared and loved his community.”

I hope to be remembered as someone in the leather community who played a pivotal role in continuing a strong and proud leather legacy.

Chandler: What aspects of the leather community are most meaningful to you?

Jafar: The biggest aspect for me is the sense of community and safety it gave me—how the leather community brings together people who felt “too different” and makes being different the norm.

I also value the encouragement to be proud of our kinks, and that being sexual is not frowned upon; it’s embraced as a healthy expression of who we are.

Another meaningful aspect is mentorship—teaching the newer generation what it means to be a leather person, how to wear gear properly, and understanding that the goal is not just aesthetics but also advocacy, community work, representation, protest, and making space for everyone.

Chandler: What goals do you have for your title year?

The Queen Behind South Florida’s Longest-Running Drag Brunch

By Megan Fitzgerald, Ph.D. For 18 years, Nicolette has been the quick-witted, crowd-loving host of the iconic Sunday drag brunch at Aquaplex in Fort Lauderdale. This fall, she celebrated something even bigger: 30 years in the art of female impersonation.

A theater kid turned seasoned entertainer, Nicolette has helped shape drag brunch into a South Florida staple.

You recently celebrated 30 years in female impersonation. How did it all begin?

“I was in college, went to my first drag show, and I was like, wow. I was a theater major and always loved performing, so I thought, that’s something I want to try. Eventually I did—and I’ve stuck with it ever since.”

She got her start in Monroe, Louisiana, later moved to Nashville, and eventually landed in South Florida, where she has now lived for 24 years.

You’ve hosted the Sunday brunch show since day one. How has it evolved?

“When we started 18 years ago, we were the only place in South Florida doing drag brunch. We were the ticket,” she said. “It was a gospel show for 14 years.”

Last year, everything almost changed when the former Lips location prepared to close—until new owners from Aquaplex Key West walked in the week before the final show.

“Midway through the show, the main guy got up from the table, and I thought I’d blown it. But he was on the phone making the deal. Two days later, the papers were signed and we stayed open.”

Since becoming Aquaplex, renovations, new lighting, and LED screens have elevated the show experience.

Why do you think drag brunch resonates so strongly with audiences?

“People love brunch—that late-morning, early-afternoon kind of thing. And when you add a show to it, it becomes an experience,” she said. “I take pride that we were the first, but I never begrudge anyone. Those queens are my drag sisters.”

The paint is fresh, the equipment is installed, and the smell of a new store fills the air. Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More is expanding its presence by opening new locations in South Florida; Cooper City is next on the map. The franchise’s newest location, owned by Alex Papastamatis, opened on December 17, joining the other 75 and counting. The store gives customers the opportunity to personalize apparel with their own designs. Anything from images, logos, and phrases can be imprinted for any occasion.

For Papastamatis, the new store represents more than just a business venture. After more than 20 years of working in marketing in corporate America, he was ready to do something that felt creative, communitydriven, and personal.

“I wanted to be part of the community,” he said. “And hopefully I’ll be able to give back to the community.

There’s a lot of charity events where we’re going to be able to either donate or make a fundraiser for churches, for schools and help them raise money.”

The heart of Big Frog’s mission is to bring the community together to connect. The store specializes in custom apparel printing and embroidery, serving both individuals and local organizations. Their product line extends to scrubs, uniforms, hats, backpacks, drinkware, and more. Whether customers want a detailed sewed-in style design on a hat, or to simply print a design as a sticker, there are many options to choose from. Customers can walk in with a simple concept, for example, wanting a shirt for a family trip celebrating a relative’s birthday, and watch it transform into something tangible.

While custom apparel is Big Frog’s signature, Papastamatis’s vision stretches beyond the product.

He wants the store to become a creative hub, a place where schools, charities, and small businesses can bring their branding and fundraising ideas to life.

“People want to place orders, and they want to come in and support me,” he said. “I’m excited for people to see what we can do in the store.”

What Are the Stars Telling Us?

By Bishop Durrell Watkins, D.Min. In the western Christian tradition January 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany.

Epiphany calls to mind Magi from Persia using their astrological arts to discern that something cosmically important was happening in Bethlehem. So, these magi, Zoroastrian priests (not kings), traveled a long way to investigate. They encountered the vassal King of Judea, disclosed they were looking for a blessed child with a big future, and the king asked them to bring back word when they found him. The king said he wanted to honor this heavenly heralded child, but really, he had dastardly plans in mind for him.

The magi found the child and his family, gave them gifts and they soon after had a vision about the king’s nefarious plan. They warned the Holy Family to leave the area, and they did, becoming refugees in Egypt.

This well-known and treasured tale shows us people of different faith traditions working together (Jewish, Zoroastrian), mingling of classes (priests and peasants), welcoming of strangers (the family receiving the foreign guests), generosity (the priests giving gifts to a family they didn’t know), and the concern God has for the vulnerable (the Holy Family is protected from imperial cruelty and become refugees in another country).

Maybe the stars are still communicating, telling us to be kinder, more generous, and more concerned for those in the margins. Maybe that’s always been the point of the story.

A New Year: The Power of New Beginnings

By Father Rich Vitale A new year always feels like a clean sheet of paper. The calendar turns, the world seems to pause for a moment, and we wonder what the next twelve months hold. It is a moment filled with possibility. The truth is, one year from today you could be living a life closer to the one you’ve dreamed of.

The distance between where you are and where you hope to be is not as far as it feels. What stands in the way is often not our circumstances but the stories we tell ourselves: stories sometimes rooted in guilt, shame, fear, or old disappointments.

If you need to take a first step toward real change, it is important to remember that we are not alone. Calling on a higher power, however you understand that, is one way to lift us out of the lie that everything depends only on us. We can let go of the shame that whispers we don’t deserve a better future.

Doing this work requires some courage. We may have to face the parts of ourselves we’d rather keep hidden, our regrets, our fears, the places where we’ve fallen short.

Once you have opened your heart to this deeper work, the next step is simple: set defined goals. Big dreams become overwhelming unless they are broken into small, doable steps.

Here are a few guiding principles: ● Be specific. A clear goal inspires action; a vague wish fades away. ● Break it down. Divide each goal into small, daily or weekly steps. ● Face the shadows. Let what you’ve hidden come into the light; healing begins with honesty. ● Rely on grace. Faith, prayer, and community give strength when willpower wavers. ● Trust your own capacity. You are stronger, braver, and more capable than you often believe.

Thou Art Woman: Hear Them Roar

“It’s evolved into something so powerful,” said G Wright, co-founder of Thou Art Woman (TAW) with Nik Harris.

“What we started as a solution to the isolation we face as LGBTQ+ women, 12 years later, has become a consistent safe space for our community, and a platform for the arts and centering joy as acts of defiance in the face of silencing and erasure. And, we couldn’t have done it without our partnership with Our Fund Foundation. They are essential to allowing our work not just to continue, but to expand its reach and impact.”

Launching as an open mic event in 2014 to create a safe space for audience members to share their stories, showcase their talents, and be vulnerable, TAW was recognized for its openness and authenticity which, alongside performances by established artists, was central to its early success and provided the confidence to apply for an Our Fund grant.

Having been made aware of TAW through its application,

Our Fund Executive Director David Jobin attended one of its early events and recognized TAW was fulfilling an important need for LGBTQ+ women.

His support has helped sustain and grow the program over time into an annual arts exhibition and a series of performance and visual arts events that celebrate and empower LGBTQ+ women in an ever growing list of venues. Yet, the current political climate and corresponding social policies threaten the visibility and rights of queer and trans women.

These attacks and the possible opportunities that may arise when confronting them is the impetus for RE/ FRACTIONS: BEYOND THE VANISHING POINT at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center.

RE/FRACTIONS: BEYOND THE VANISHING POINT opens on January 16, 2026 at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. “We’ll make sure that we weave performance in at the opening and then give people a chance to really look at the art and engage with the artists who are there,” Wright previewed.

“They found pretty much what LGBTQ women were asking for,” Wright explained. “It showed that we’re spot on by providing recognition and visibility in the community.

We build a greater sense of community through our programming and create more opportunities to connect and socialize.”

That is followed on February 4 with an online virtual arts talk. “Not all our artists are going to be from Florida. We'll have artists from across the country and across the world.

We’ll select four or five to speak online in an interactive visual artist talk.”

Wright shared Our Fund has been TAW’s greatest supporter and encouraged her and Harris to create the non-profit Black LGBTQ+ Liberation, Inc to present TAW programming as well as other services to the community.

The event series continues at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center on February 25 with a film screening at the HIVE Black Box Theater with filmmakers in attendance and concludes at the Center on March 20. Later this season, TAW will present its signature Open Mic & Performance Night on May 1 during Wilton Women’s Week.

“People are very frightened and uncomfortable,” Wright said. “They feel threatened as trans folks, they feel threatened as LGBTQ folks, they feel threatened as black people and brown people. The work that we do really works to uplift the community and create safe, affirming spaces where we can experience joy.”

Showcases Work Around The World

Claudia Castillo, an artist originally from Colombia, opened her art studio in 2017 as a way to showcase her own art.

The studio also provides opportunities for other artists to display theirs through exhibitions.

“Beyond being a showcase for original artwork, sculptures, jewelry and collectibles, the studio has become a hub for cultural connection and community engagement. My artwork has been exhibited internationally in Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, London, Spain, Korea and Japan, and I am deeply committed to bringing that global perspective back to my local community,” Castillo said.

Since she was young, Castillo has been interested in paintings and visiting museums. She studied at several different universities, including Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

“I came to the United States in search of freedom, and I have never regretted that decision. This country has given me the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, to explore my artistic voice and to share my work with diverse communities,” Castillo said.

In 2025, Castillo had her work featured in ArtServe in Fort

Lauderdale, XV Florence Biennale and Las Olas Riverhouse.

“From the beginning, art has been both a passion and a refuge for me. It is a language through which I connect with others, expressing emotions and experiences that words cannot fully capture. Each day I continue to learn, experiment with color and technique, and reaffirm my belief that when you paint, you are never alone,” Castillo said.

Castillo’s studio, Claudia Castillo ART studio, is currently in Wilton Manors. Castillo is working on several updates for the studio, including an upcoming exhibition from artist Robert Catapano, as well as the Justin Flippen Manatee Contest, where students can submit their artwork for prizes.

Castillo said people visit Claudia Castillo ART studio because of its welcoming atmosphere.

“They are drawn to the diversity of artwork and unique pieces we showcase, from paintings and sculptures to jewelry, gifts, and collectibles. The studio offers not only a place to discover art but also a place to connect, reflect and feel inspired,” Castillo said.

Broward Center Launches New Off-Center Series

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is set to launch its new Off Center Series—a bold, immersive lineup that transforms the theater experience by bringing audiences into more interactive, up-close performances, running from January through May 2026.

The new Off Center Series aims to showcase performances that blend humor, creativity, and interaction.

Unlike the traditional theater experience—where audiences sit back and watch from a distance—the series offers a more casual and social atmosphere that invites guests to feel part of the performance.

In its inaugural season, the series will feature three comedy-driven shows: In Pour Taste: A Comedy Wine Tasting Experience (January 8–25), BATSU! (February 11–22), and The Office! A Musical Parody (April 16–May 3). Designed to move beyond a standard stage setup, the series uses the Abdo New River Room; a multi-purpose banquet space, to create flexible, immersive environments.

“It’s a new, fun, little atypical series where we want to bring the audience into a more immersive experience where they’re sort of part of the show and it’s a little less conventional,” said Keith Hinson, marketing manager at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

The idea was proposed by Broward Center CEO Ty Sutton, who stepped into the role in February 2024, and encouraged the team to explore new ways to utilize the Abdo New River Room.

Hinson explained that while concerts, plays, and musicals continue to draw audiences, there’s a growing

appetite for immersive, unconventional shows that invite people to be part of the performance—a shift that led Sutton to encourage re-envisioning how the space is used.

With this in mind, the series is intended to become an annual fixture at the Broward Center, featuring a rotating lineup of new shows each season. The goal is to continue presenting a small collection of immersive productions that bring something fresh to audiences each year.

“With BATSU!, you can jump and sign a waiver, and you can win glory or suffer BATSU! right alongside the comedians,” said Hinson. “When we say interactive, you're not just watching in the audience, if you want to be part of the action, you can be part of the action.”

Closing the inaugural season is The Office! A Musical Parody, a mockumentary based on the beloved TV series and a cultural phenomenon.

Audiences can expect to see the familiar humor of Dunder Mifflin come to life on stage.

“You can only put the hilarity on steroids by adding music and dance,” said Hinson. “The space is going to be set up like the actual office with different areas, including the annex, the bullpen, and Toby's area.”

Led by Australian comedians Sweeney Preston and Ethan Cavanagh, the show pairs five wines with rounds of humor and spontaneous jokes, joined by a local wine expert who offers real insights amid the playful chaos. Each ticket includes all five wine tastings (with an alcohol-free option available) and a personal charcuterie board, enhancing the immersive, social experience.

“We like to make it feel like you’re just coming into our house essentially,” said Sweeney Preston. “It’s not like a lot of shows that put distance between the performer and the audience.”

In Pour Taste breaks from the traditional comedy format through improv and audience involvement, making each performance more casual, intimate and different every night.

BATSU! (February 11–22) Following In Pour Taste, BATSU! brings a popular Japanese style of comedy known as a batsu game, where comedians take on challenges and the losers receive a punishment. Among the punishments, performers may face electric shocks, paintballs, or an egg-smashing chicken—an unconventional comedy experience that

Together, these productions set the stage for a series that celebrates the creativity and richness of South Florida’s arts community, giving locals a chance to connect through humor and interactive theatre.

“South Florida has no shortage of live entertainment options, so I think the impact on the local community is going to be that we’re trying to do something that is maybe a little bit out of the norm,” explained Hinson. “I think it’s going to bring the audiences in to continue to believe in what we do.”

For South Florida audiences, this marks an exciting new kind of night out—one that’s immersive, unpredictable, and full of laughter.

“We know the audiences are going to be completely blown away and are going to leave talking and wanting to bring their friends back to see the shows again,” said Hinson.

The Little Foxes Explores Relevant Themes of Greed and Apathy

By Bryce Johnson Theater company Island City Stage will perform The Little Foxes, a 1939 play written by Lillian Hellman, from Jan. 8 to Feb. 1, 2026 at its theater in Wilton Manors, FL. Michael Leeds, artistic director of Island City Stage, is directing The Little Foxes.

“It's got everything. It's got humor and drama. It's got a great plot twist, and it's got themes of greed, apathy, passivity and revenge. It's about a family's drive for money and power and what they'll do even to each other to get it,” Leeds said. “It really resonates with, I think, what's going on in our country today.”

In The Little Foxes, Regina, being a woman in the 1900’s, is denied inheritance and wealth over her brothers, so she devises a scheme to get what she feels is owed to her.

"It's so meaty and juicy. I've seen it a number of times and the audience always really responds, so I'm excited to have our audience see our production,” Leeds said.

Actress Mia Matthews will star as Regina in The Little Foxes. After years of hoping they could do the play, Matthews remembers when Leeds called and gave her the role of Regina.

“This has been on the bucket list for the two of us. So it's

really exciting that we're getting the opportunity to do it,” Matthews said.

Matthews always knew that she wanted to play Regina in The Little Foxes. She resonated with Regina because of how complex her character was.

“Many people look at her as a bit of the villain of the story, and I actually have played a lot of what people consider villains, and there's always a reason. There's a lot more to it. There's a reason why this woman is acting the way that she is. She was in a man's world. She was not treated the same. When people refer to her, they think it's about greed, but she really just wants what's fair to her,” Matthews said.

A line from The Little Foxes, “There are people who eat the earth and eat all the people on it like in the Bible with the locusts. And other people who stand around and watch them eat,” encapsulates the feeling of the play for Leeds.

Leeds said The Little Foxes remains relevant even today, with people doing anything for power and money.

“We can get used to something that we shouldn't get used to, and that's one of the things that I've been dealing with in my own life. Well, what do I do? What does one individual do? One of the things I can do is to direct a play that I think speaks to that in a very entertaining way with a terrific cast,” Leeds said.

New Year, New Venue Gray Box Theater Has Star Power in January

By John Hayden A new performing arts venue is set to hit its stride in 2026.

Gray Box Theater (GBT) has a powerful pair of acts scheduled for January and, if your New Year’s resolution is to have more fun, you need to check them out.

Up first is local legend Alexander Zenoz. He just finished up a holiday residency in Provincetown and is starting the new year in style. He and his band, The Birds of Paradise bring their Civil Disobedience show to Gray Box on January 10, 2026 at 8 pm.

“The Birds of Paradise and I are looking forward to bringing a close, honest show filled with the kind of energy a new theater like this inspires,” he said.

Cody, a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, strives to use his music and storytelling skills to help people navigate faith and being LGBTQIA+, two things that often seem diametrically opposed.

He’s an acclaimed pianist who, with a background as a worship leader, makes personal connections with his audience. The show’s mission is to “blend virtuosic piano performance with heartfelt reflections on identity, community, and the joy of living your truth as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ family.”

Grey Matter

Zenoz has become a regular fixture in South Florida’s performing arts community and often pops up along The Drive either solo or with Birds of Paradise.

The Miami native has a strong voice and is honing his acting skills. In September, he starred in Evil Dead the Musical, at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts (The Center), and before that he co-starred in the campy horror flick Big Easy Queens, which streamed on Hulu in June as part of their Pride Month programming.

Zenoz has been associated with Gray Box through the development stage, always showing up to support local artists. Now he’s ready for the GBT spotlight to shine on him.

“As a performer, it’s exciting to be part of a venue created by people who truly understand the value of what we do,” he said.

Praise & Piano Rounding out the month is Cameron Cody, who’s bringing spiritual authenticity to the stage with his Praise,

Gray Box Theater held its first show in October, with Tituss Burgess as the premiere performer. The new venue, located at 1444 NE 26th St. in Island City Plaza, seats up to 230 for stage performances.

However, the renovated space is extremely versatile. It can be set up with cocktail tables for receptions or events looking for a more intimate feel, or cleared out for people looking for open space.

They are still looking to develop space for a food truck and an outdoor bar.

The GBT team, led by founder Gary Van Horn, has worked tirelessly to hit the ground running and make sure top artists will return.

“What I love about Gray Box Theater is that it represents real community effort from people who believe deeply in the arts and the impact they have on our world,” Zenoz said. “So many individuals came together to bring this space to life, and I’m proud to have contributed to that vision.”

More Than The Art On Its Walls Gallery 21 Brings Art Into The Community

By Savannah Whaley “It's a small town,” said Constance Ruppender, who has lived 38 of her 74 years in Wilton Manors. “They've tried to make it into a tourist destination, and I guess in some regards that's worked, but it's really a small town. The longer you live here, the smaller it gets.”

As one of the three co-founders of Art Gallery 21, this small town champion has delivered some great big public art. In addition to the art on its walls, the gallery hosts the Island City Art Advisory Committee that identifies public art projects and raises the money to fund them.

“I just can't begin to tell you about why public art is so important,” she said. “It sets a tone for what the community is about. It's about creativity and enlightenment and sharing. Just being together in the same space, maybe not at the same time, but in the same space.”

painted on the doors in honor of Justin Flippin, the city’s late mayor and manatee fan.

Other projects enhancing the quality of life in the city include contributing to the colorful parking meters along Wilton Drive created by Claudia Castillo, coordinating the installation of the inspirational signs found throughout town, orchestrating the painting of the "BE PROUD" mural at the Wilton Discount Liquor store, aiding the completion of the mural on the wall of The Grille and, most recently, collaborating with the city to transform nature photos from one of its exhibits into utility box wraps.

One of the most notable public art projects was the installation of Thunderbunny, the 13’ 7” glass mosaic bunny rabbit sculpture at Justin Flippin Park by renowned artist Hunt Slonem. Art Gallery 21 paid for the engineering required for the installation and is the sponsor of the selfie spot now located next to the work.

This month the gallery will present “The Public Art

Continuum: A Reflection of Our Place and Time,” which marks the 50th anniversary of Broward County’s support of public art and is presented with support from the Broward Cultural Division and the City of Wilton Manors.

“We're looking for people who have photos of public art installations that were done that are no longer,” she previewed as the gallery put out a call for submissions.

“We're looking for art, artistic renderings, paintings and photography of current public art exhibits around Broward County and there are over 300 public art installations.

We're also looking for either a rendering or a scale model, either 1/6 or 1/12 scale of a proposed art installation. If it’s the right one, I think the city of Wilton Manors may go forward with it as a public art installation.”

It is the latest in a line of engaging and captivating shows.

“We've done exhibits that people laughed at when we told them what we were going to do and it turned out to be a really good thing,” she recalled. “One that has been just a phenomenal success for us was the “Art of Barbie” back in 2019. It was overwhelming. We were just stunned at how many people were interested. Young and old, It didn't matter. Some were Barbie doll people and some were just curious. We had international reporters come so that was a lot of fun.”

Other notable exhibitions include “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend,” a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian “The Way We Worked,” “Mermaids and Manatees” in honor of Mayor Flippin, and “The Book Project: Speaking Volumes,” inspired by books. Every year, Art Gallery 21 gives its space to Arts United for a Pride exhibit.

“This will be our fourth year,” she explained. “The first year they did it it was a little crazy but we got it done. After that, it just seemed to be the right thing to do and we kept doing it every summer in June. You know, a lot of our

artists are gay. We've got transgender artists who have come through the gallery. We really don't care about any of that. We're really just interested in the art and making sure that they know that they're welcome regardless of what their background is or who they are. They're artists and so none of that other stuff really matters to us.”

In addition to the art on its walls, the gallery has also preserved and maintained as its home the former Woman’s Club of Wilton Manors built in 1956.

“The city's been very good and every year they've done things to improve the building,” she shared. “It’s available for rentals and other groups use it so there's a lot of eyes on the art. We leave our cards out and they'll call and say, ‘I saw a piece of art in your gallery and I'd like to buy it.’ I would encourage people to buy art as a gift, a birthday gift, a Mother's Day gift, I love you gift. Don't go buy art at HomeGoods or Target. You can get original art for the same amount of money. We want to see people collect art and bring art into the home. It's amazing what hanging a painting on the wall can do for your spirit.”

With a small budget of $15,000 in a good year, Art Gallery 21 is entering its 14th season and Ruppender is still engaged in the possibilities of her small town.

“As long as I can walk and breathe, I'll be doing this as long as the city will let us,” she said. “I think we've done a good job of increasing awareness of the importance of art in everyday life. It hasn't been a solo thing, but I think we were part of the beginning and now they started this Wilton Manors Art District. It's been really inspiring to me as a senior citizen to see these younger people coming in and the energy they bring. They know what they want to accomplish and they're doing it. It's really fun to see that happen and know that we were there at the beginning. We're here in the middle and I hope we're there until it stops. And I hope it never stops.”

Brings a night of Broadway, Hymns, and Heart to the Gray Box Theater

When Cameron Cody was three years old, he wandered over to a piano at a neighbor’s garage sale and began playing melodies he had heard in church—despite never having taken a lesson. His family watched, stunned, as the child instinctively found his way across the keyboard.

Carousel—before transitioning into the story of Cody’s own life, including his work as a faith-driven performer navigating social media fame. The second half will feature the great hymns of the church, arranged with Cody’s signature exuberance.

“It was an instant bond,” he recalls. “I don’t remember a time where I didn’t play.”

His concerts, he says, are designed to feel deeply personal.

That bond would become a lifelong calling. Now 34, Cody is an internationally recognized pianist, organist, and conductor with endorsements from both Shigeru Kawai and the Allen Organ Company—an almost unheard-of dual distinction. He serves as Director of Music and Principal Organist at Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, where an 80-voice choir and a 7,000-member congregation anchor his week. The rest of the time, he’s on the road.

“People come up to me with tears in their eyes saying, ‘I know you planned this for me,’” Cody says. “Somehow I’ve been able to meet people where they are—atheist, Christian, straight, gay. Everyone is welcome.”

“I travel about 35 to 40 percent of the year,” Cody says, noting that his social media presence has surged, booking him nearly through 2028. “People thought this style of music was dead, but when you combine Broadway, sacred music, and inspirational pieces, the world is receiving it really well.”

“If we could all pull our chairs up and sing around the piano, I would do it,” he says. “This is the sweetest little venue. I want people to feel like I’m looking right at them.”

South Florida audiences will get a taste of that blend on January 30, 2026 when Cody brings a specially curated performance to the Gray Box Theater in Wilton Manors.

Though he often performs in massive venues, including a recent appearance at Carnegie Hall, Cody says he’s thrilled about the intimacy of the Gray Box and being a part of its historic first year.

Cody describes the upcoming South Florida concert in three words: grandioso, tender, and faith. But more than anything, he hopes people leave changed.

“Everything I do has to have a purpose,” he says. “I feel the music from head to toe, and I want people to walk out feeling something they didn’t expect.”

Miss Richfield 1981 wants a new drug. She’ll make that clear right from the start of There’s a Pill For That, her new show that she will bring to the Sunshine Cathedral MCC at the end of this month. When asked if her opening number is the hit Huey Lewis had three years after she took her beauty pageant crown in Richfield, Minnesota, she delivered a true diva dismissal saying, “I think of it as mine. It’s not his number. Yeah, it's definitely my number.”

Even if it may be the same song, her claim is hard to dispute since Lewis probably never performed that song as she will, dressed as her favorite prescription drug.

Miss Richfield 1981 promises a feel good evening that is just what the doctor ordered as she once again infuses her show with contagious laughter, infectious audience interaction and improv presented at a fever pitch.

“My show this year is just fabulous,” she previewed. “I don't know if you've seen the ads on TV, and I don't know how you could miss them in the new medicated world that we live in. If you watch those commercials, those people are happy. It's hard to believe that any of them are actually sick. I'm so excited about it because it's a celebration. It's just a freaking celebration and an upbeat look at how sick and bad off we all are.”

The show is her latest moment in the spotlight since she was awarded her beautiful hand- glittered sash, tiara and the first-place prize of a power lawnmower in what can only be described as a hotly contested pageant in 1981.

“There was an incident,” she admitted after prompting.

“You're probably referring to Trudy Olson, who was a fabulous and very talented performer. I was really worried she would get the crown because she was dancing to some music and twirling not one, not two, but three flaming batons when she lost control and took out the whole front row of contestants in a terrible fire. It was awful. I don't know if you've seen taffeta burn, but it's almost like a NASA launch between the hairspray and the taffeta and all.

“I was the only contestant to stop, drop, and roll, which is also how I do my hair. All the other contestants got up and ran and you're not supposed to run when you're on fire. I think eight of them were taken to the burn unit and a couple to the morgue. So overall, it was a positive response. I was the only contestant left and out of the smoke came one of the judges who just handed me the sash and crown and said, ‘You're it.’ Those were his actual words. And so that's when I won my beautiful title.”

She’s come a long way and many miles over the years thanks to her sponsor, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Lutheran Church in Richfield.

“I love my church so very, very much and all my friends at the church and the women's circles that do the singing and the funeral lunches,” she said wistfully. “Part of what I adore about my congregation is that they are the ones that buy my bus ticket. Most of the mission’s budget doesn't go to missionaries, it goes to buy me a bus ticket to go someplace else. Sometimes when I don't know where to go next, they just say go, they don't even tell me. I mean, they love me, they support me. I so miss my church and I don't even remember the last time I was at the church.

I usually walk in and they hand me a bus ticket and I just turn around and leave.”

While Minnesota churches have a reputation for friendly potluck gatherings, the Sunshine Cathedral rivals that camaraderie with the Cathedral Pub. Open one hour prior to the performance, it offers live music, beverages, and appetizers in a comfortable meet-and-greet environment that is available to attendees as an additional ticket to the performance.

A YouTube star for her rendition of Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise, Miss Richfield 1981 does offer the Cathedral Pub advice if they want to add a hot dish to the menu.

“I always say any hot dish recipe is good when it starts with a can of cream of mushroom soup and you top it off with French's original crispy dried onion rings. I'm telling you, that's it. It doesn't matter what else is in there. I have gone to parties, and I'm talking about fancy gay parties where you have to eat 14 helpings to fill yourself up because it's some stupid thing on the end of a toothpick, and I will bring hot dish and that dish is so clean by the time people are done, I almost don't have to wash it because that goes first. In the end there is not a piece of a dried French onion ring left. It is completely cleaned up. That's an absolutely true story.”

Also true is that due to legislation in Florida, no one under 18 will be admitted to the show at the Sunshine Cathedral, unlike at Miss Richfield 1981’s home base in Provincetown, Massachusetts where she debuts a new show each year.

“I perform all over the country and it is literally the only place that this is an issue,” she said. “That makes me sad because I think it's such a lost opportunity. I have a lot of

kids that come to my show in P-Town. I've had kids as young as three or four come to the show with their parents and then I've had teenagers come without their parents.

And you say, ‘Who are you with today?’ And they're like, ‘We just came.’ They get it. It's just an opportunity to have fun. Kids these days are so tied to screens. This is an opportunity to see a live performance and live theater is really struggling these days. I’m just bummed and I guess the kids down there are going to have to watch the clowns making the laws because they can’t watch this clown.”

so friendly that we wave to all the planes that fly overhead because the airport is in our backyard and it’s a huge international airport. Oftentimes, we take turns standing outside the trailer waving to the planes because we don't want anyone coming to Richfield not feeling welcomed.

That is super important.”

The fact that Fort Lauderdale isn’t like Providence or Richfield became clear when she talked about home.

“We've heard that ICE might be coming to arrest all of our gardeners and landscapers. But here's the deal, the joke's on them because none of us can afford gardeners or landscapers. So, ha ha ha. But we're keeping it quiet because we want them to come anyway because maybe that will take the heat off the wealthy community next door to us. We’re still encouraging them to come, but

“I think every city across the country would benefit from being more Richfieldian because in the Midwest we believe in kindness and generosity. We look out for one another and we're very friendly. In fact, in Richfield we are

we're hiding all of our friends. We do our own lawns and landscaping, so they can arrest me. I don't care but I don't want them arresting our friends.”

It seems that the charms of Richfield are timeless including the fundamentals of what it takes to win the crown.

“There's a new Miss Richfield every year,” she sighed.

“The problem is that a lot of them don't have a sponsor like my church and when you've got Jesus behind you, know what I'm saying? When I give advice, I just tell most of the gals to drop out before they humiliate themselves because most people aren't talented and beautiful like me. But to those that are, that have the natural beauty, the talents, and a natural baritone voice like myself, I say, stay genuine and always fold Jesus into your answer on that tricky question. It’s always a good idea, because who's going to argue with Jesus, right? Nobody.”

And what has become of her baton twirling archrival?

“She does like it when I mention her name, because she occasionally feels like she's still involved, but she's not really,” she dished. “Don’t misspell her name because she’d be furious. T-R-U-D-Y O-L-S-O-N. Between the fire and her getting heavy, she's not been in the beauty pageant circuit for many years.”

Miss Richfield 1981 won’t be leaving South Florida from the bus station this time. At the beginning of February, she’ll depart Miami with the Atlantis mega-cruise on the Symphony of the Seas billed as the world’s biggest gay festival at sea.

“It’s going to be a wonderful, fun time because it's one of the largest cruise ships in the world,” she raved. “I tell people all the time that these cruises have so many

people on them, you can make it whatever you want. For me, that salt air is fabulous because it helps shellac my hair into a helmet. The best cruises are the ones where there's a little bit of rocking and a little bit of rough seas, which always makes me look shinier and prettier because as people's eyes are crossing and becoming glassy, you just look better. You don't want to make anybody sick, but you do look better when things are a little rough for everybody else.”

She’ll also be playing bingo on the ship, a game for which she became an online sensation from the ninth day of the pandemic shutdown in March 2020 as she led twice weekly games until November 2024.

“Bingo is the best. They play it in elementary schools, in preschools. They play it at church bazaars. They play it in care centers for old folks. It is the ultimate game of fun. It doesn't really take a lot of strategy. You don't have to sit and think about it and it doesn’t involve math so you could

have gone to public school and still play it. I know a lot of the people in my audience are probably Christians and I tell them that the Bible says a lot about gambling, but there is not one verse about bingo. I think it is blessed by the Lord. Unfortunately, they don't have bingo balls anymore and it’s all done by computers so my tagline ‘Grab your balls and play’ no longer works.”

As she heads to the high seas and into a new year, Miss Richfield 1981 is making resolutions for 2026.

“I love resolutions. I want to improve all the time and even if one of the resolutions improves my life a little bit that's important. In 2026, I'm going to practice my ukulele every day because that's new and I just started putting that into the show. I'm going to get more fiber in my diet. I'm going to continue to save for my bunion surgery on both feet because if you just do one, you'll never do the other one.

I’m also going to make more lesbian friends because I do enjoy a motorcycle ride.”
