Where do you get your inspiration from? I first get my inspiration from my own sexual fantasies. I also like to use fashion photography as inspiration for styles of image, colours, rendering and lighting. I also am interested in the ideas my models have. What kind of camera do you use? I use a digital SLR camera and have done since I started. Iâ€™m not very happy in a dark room, at least not a photographic one! So working with digital cameras and software is perfect for me. How much creative freedom do you have on an editorial shoot? It depends. If I am shooting for my own projects, then I have full control. If I am shooting for companies or any kind of other entity, sometimes I take a brief. Some of my recent work with some stores have given me entire creative freedom. In addition to this, people have commissioned work that I produced off my own back and used it as club flyers or adverts. So it varies. But I guess I am happiest when Iâ€™m working for myself with no art direction or brief. How important are personal projects to you ? Personal projects are incredibly important because of the creative freedom that working on my own ideas gives. They also enabled me to express myself fully, and get across some of my political or cultural views about things. So they are very important.

How much preparation goes into a shoot? Again, this depends. Sometimes I think a mission to take portraits of people in their fetish gear, playing or simply posing. In this case, I have very good studio lighting techniques and don’t particularly need a lot of preparation, particularly if the model has very good fetish gear. On larger projects, outdoor shoots, or some location shoots, I like to prepare well in advance. For example, with UK Leather Pride, we spent a long time working out locations, gear, and the kind of message we wanted to get over. How much do you do in post production? I apply filters to change the ambience and mood of the photo, I also use postproduction to bring certain things in and out of focus. I’ve also used postproduction to stick to various images together in the past. Most changes I make to pictures tend to not occur in Photoshop or Illustrator but are usually apply changes as I’m shooting in Lightroom.

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? I wish that I knew that it doesnâ€™t always require taking hundreds of photos in order to make a good photo. Sometimes concentrating very hard can result in less frames but better images. Describe your photographic style? How did you develop your style? I would describe my work as moody, provocative, sometimes humorous, sometimes dark. My style I suppose developed from starting off in a very small studio with just one flash head which meant that I was using a lot of shadow and this led to a sense of darkness and enclosure within my images.

The Leathermans Handbook Author: Larry Townsend Publisher: Prowler Press; Edition: 4 edition (31 Dec. 1994) ISBN-10: 1881684032 Language: English First Published: 1972 Synopsis The Leatherman’s Handbook was the first book to publicize BDSM to the general public, it was a paperback book widely available on newsstands and at bookstores throughout the United States. Back in the seventies, it was still a very risky proposition to attempt a gay publication of any sort. But in the California Seventies, books like “Song Of The Loon” (from the sixties) and eventually the likes of “Tales of The City” began breaking down the barriers, allowing homosexual men to be presented not as crazy or unstable, but as regular people in love.

Larry Townsend went even farther out on a limb he sat down in 1972 and spelled out, for the first time in book form, the codes of conduct that the underground Leather Scene and S&M men lived by. There were also several accounts of steamy real life kink encounters. This was unheard of. Even now, with a much wider variety of books available on how to and relationship studies, not to mention my own writings, it is hard to remember a time when Larry's book was such a shocking event. Voluntary servitude and fetishistic behaviors are given a great deal of coverage here, and the amazing thing is just how much most of Larry's original foundations remain relevant. Even more to the point is just how much the format of "The Leatherman's Handbook" has become the blueprint for so much of our community's guidebooks; A little journalistic information followed up with some hot episodes. Still, "The Leatherman's Handbook" remains a viable source of both etiquette and education in addition to its historical value. Quite possibly one of the most important books about the side of Gay Life that many would like to ignore, but is with us and vibrant and exciting for those who have taken this intimate discovery. Chem Sex by Matt Spike Fetish Photographer The chem sex project came together because Matt was looking for a project to do in a fetish way, that also contained a social message. Matt soon hooked up with David Stuart at 56 Dean Street, who was working on a documentary with Vice Productions. They came together as a team and Matt carried on producing images which were documented by Vice, and this became the chem sex connection. It does not aim to arouse or to be too serious, but leave the decision in the hands of the person seeing the picture as to what it actually means. Is it sexy? Is it dangerous? Is it both? These are answers that can only be provided by the person seeing the image. Matt Spike Fetish Photographer Show Matt Spike is a fetish artist who uses video, photo and human installations to illustrate his view of homoeroticism. As he puts it, “I simply must ‘create’ what obsesses me. As an ex-leather escort, I’m full of ideas and concepts relating to submission and dominance and the superficiality of sexuality. I am a politically-minded person; I like to include an edge in most of my images, as I believe taboos should always be challenged. Age of Consent is informative and eye-opening – did you know more gay men were arrested and convicted of gross indecency in 1989 than in 1966? – while being playful, funny and downright filthy. ‘Described by the barman as a ‘sneaky, sexy, dirty wee hole’, The Hoist and its patrons could be seen as representing the antithesis of the recent trend in mainstream gay politics towards assimilation. Pop Renegade blurring the lines between the mainstream and subculture. Oversexual babe living in London City. Originally from Geneva (Switzerland), Dorian made the move to the city at the heart of European pop music in early 2014 to pursue a career in music. Dorian sang in choirs during his high school years and trained his voice classically but was always drawn to songwriting and pop music, starting to write his own material at age 17. After having recorded a few early songs and his first music video for his track “Wasting My Time” in 2010, he realised where his future would be. In 2013, Dorian released his first official single “Are You Ready?” and was featured as a lead in rock musical “Hermissia” (Switzerland) for the whole summer of the same year. He then released his single “Oversexual” in April 2014 and won “London’s Pride Got Talent 2014”, allowing him to perform on Trafalgar Square for London Pride 2014 in front of 30,000 people as the introducing act to the glamorous Conchita Wurst, winner of Eurovision 2013. Since then, Dorian released a couple of videos/singles such as his LGBT Rock and Roll anthem “Sinsation” and his Pop-Grunge fetish jam “Life Is Hard” in 2015. He also released his debut EP “The Line” in April 2016.

A rising star in the portrait and physique photography world, James Critchley has already shot many of the worlds physique models. What sets his work apart is the combination of his physique photography with his other passion of landscape design which creates his unique style. His choice of stunning locations and physique models his work is reminiscent of Ansel Adams and Bruce Weber.

Where do you get your inspiration from ? Coming from a design background I have always been drawn to structure and form. This extended into my photography and into capturing the form and structure of the athletic physical form. Living in the Cotswolds, much of my nature series focuses on locations based in natural settings and way the natural setting accentuates the strong form of the model.

What kind of camera do you use? I use a Canon 5D with a variety of lenses in order to create a range of different photos. To me, itâ€™s the lenses that create the magic. How much creative freedom do you have on an editorial shoot? I have had complete freedom in almost every shoot. I am very lucky that I get to choose my models, locations and style of photography How important are personal projects to you ? I would like to think that almost all of my muscle photography is personal to me. To start with, I had to ask the models to shoot for me with very little photographs to entice them. Now I have top fitness and muscle models from around the world asking me to shoot them and within those shoots, I choose where and how they will pose with very good results. So each shoot I do, I like to think is a personal project.

How much preparation goes into a shoot? Often I set out a list of goals and ideas for each shoot and sometimes the models will bring their ideas with them. I have a fantastic assistant Alicia who will assist with lighting, camera equipment etc. and without her I couldnâ€™t keep up with the fast pace of some of the shoots. How much do you do in post production? A LOT! My ratio of shooting to editing is surprising. I might spend 6 hours on a shoot but I can spend up to 6 days working up the photographs. I am very particular, and nothing leaves my studio without being edited to the highest standard. My ethos is to over deliver on images for my clients. Where the top fitness photographers might only release five photos from a shoot (some models have dieted for weeks for that shoot) I will happily work up at least 50 images for them, and give a massive variety of shots for them to choose from. Do you think a photographer needs a philosophy to do good work ? Yes I do. A very happy positive attitude helps enormously and that can get you through the most awkward of shoots. Keep things fun, always make the models laugh and that not only makes for photos full of emotion but also keeps the shoot upbeat and memorable.

Among your works, which one is your favourite? Why? All of my photographs are like my children and I love them all. I have models who I have a lot of time for who have helped me get started before I was well known and I am particularly fond of their photos, so a massive thank you to Kenolivier, Charlie Garforth and Ry Williams whose support and loyalty has helped me get where I am today. Whose work has influenced you most? I am a big fan of photographer Pat Lee from the United States, whose ability to make a monstrous vascular bodybuilder look serene and alluring has always inspired me. British fitness photographer Jules Godfrey always manages to capture images where the light and look of the models is so beautiful. What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? I used to get very nervous before a shoot and I now look forward to them. I wish I could tell the younger me to relax more and just enjoy the view. Describe your photographic style? How did you develop your style? My style is so varied and is still developing, like my chaotic mind every photo from a single shoot can look like a completely different photographers work. I have recently become a big fan of depth of field images where the subject is perfectly crisp but the surrounding landscape is almost like a watercolor painting. I always throw in a location with every physique shoot which now has helped me get recognized as one of the UKâ€™s best location photographers.

The Phoenix has been prominent to the Bristol Pub scene for generations, since 1850 to be exact! It is still alive and kicking today! One of the aspects I enjoy most about the fetish scene in Ireland is that, because we are still at a stage of new growth, there is an atmosphere of inclusiveness. Although there may be different levels of popularity amongst the different fetishes, we stand side by side in our kinks. We also link in with other community LGBT groups, supporting each other and organising joint events. We recognise that we are stronger together, and that diversity within a scene is an important part of it developing to its full potential. When we break it down, there is a common theme that connects us- sexuality. Not just whether you are gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, into leather, rubber, pup, skin, or a bear, twink, muscle, etc. But sexuality itself at its core. It’s why there can be many crossovers between “scenes”. The aim for my title year is to bring Ireland to the world and the world to Ireland, by sharing this ideology. Much like the bonds we continue to build amongst ourselves here within, I hope to build bridges between this island, Europe and the world. Let us share this experience together. I have been an active member of our leather community for many years and I have been lucky enough to have been able to attend several leather events and festivals as Mr XXXLeather already. Through my work both in my home city of Amsterdam and across the world, I have been able to gain a global perspective on our leather community and I believe that in order to strengthen our unique bonds, we need more than ever, to work together as one. By continually raising the profile of leathermen across Europe and beyond, we can all support each other and help to educate those that look upon us with curiosity and inspire those that wish to join us. The LGBT community have been (and continue to be) subject to abuse that stems from ignorance. It is my hope that I can use the title of Mr XXXLeather to highlight the issues that affect us all and promote the solutions that will lead to change for the better. By standing united, our leather brotherhood can help to challenge perceptions, break down barriers and promote tolerance of all cultures.
