Welcome to Out Bristol an independent community magazine and website for the LGBT+ communities of the West of England.

Established in 2008 as an independent free access website and guide that joins up the dots to create a hub linking to further support and information.

The website and guide quickly turned into a magazine with the same aims as the website as a hub, showcasing what’s on in the region for LGBT+ people. This developed to linking with the tourism board to showcase the great things happening in the city region. The site is now the LGBT+ tourism site for the region, with links to information on where to stay, attractions, festivals and the LGBT+ Scene.

We have an open source policy for the site, magazine and social media which means all outbristol

Out Bristol has over 80 contributors via its social media, website and magazine and we welcome people to contribute to the website and magazine as the more voices the better.

Back for its second year the Freedom of Mind Festival aims to initiate conversation, provide educational platforms and positively change the way that people talk about their own and others mental health. The Festival is currently based in Bristol.

We all have mental health, yet often we ignore it unless we start to struggle. Emotional difficulties can affect anyone at any time in their life, and we believe that everyone should have the tools to help themselves and others improve their emotional wellbeing, whatever the state of their mental health.

Freedom of Mind Festival 2016 was a huge success, encouraging conversation and offering practical tools to make Bristol a happier, healthier city – and this year we’ve got even more up our sleeve. Between the 6th and 14th October, we’ll be taking a closer look at what can affect our mental wellbeing and how we can make a real, positive change to better this.

Talking about mental health doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom, and we strive to make sure that discussions at our events are fun and engaging by making them interactive. We know that mental wellbeing isn’t one-dimensional so our events aren’t either; panels, talks, films and more, there’s something for everyone to get involved.

After all that we’ve achieved at Freedom of Mind 2016, we’re really excited to get back out there and cover even more ground during this year’s festival!

Jen Grove: EP Warren’s Classical erotica: LGBT+ activism and objects from the past Edward Perry Warren (1860-1928) is best known for giving his name to the “Warren Cup”, an ancient Roman goblet with explicit scenes of men having sex together (now in the British Museum). The Classical antiquities Warren collected at the beginning of the twentieth century include many of those we now turn to for visual evidence of homosexual acts in the ancient world.

Drawing on original archive work, this talk will explore how Warren used such artefacts from ancient Greece and Rome to campaign for the acceptance of same-sex relationships in the modern world. Warren was particularly influenced by John Addington Symonds and his Greek-inspired idea of a comradely type of love between highly virile men.

This talk will also explore some of the problems of looking to Warren, the objects he collected, and the type of ancient relationship he was inspired by – between older and younger partners – for LGBT+ activism and education today.

The talk will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting of OutStories Bristol (very brief!).

Everyone is welcome to both the AGM and talk. Admission and refreshments are free but a small donation towards the running costs of OutStories Bristol would be appreciated. Please book via website above.

Dr Jen Grove is an Engaged Research Fellow in the Centre for Medical History at the University of Exeter. She is currently employed on a Wellcome Trust-funded project ‘Rethinking Sexology: The Cross-Disciplinary Invention of Sexuality: Sexual Science Beyond the Medical, 1890-1940’. She is the editor of a forthcoming book Sculpture, Sexuality and History: Encounters in Literature, Culture and the Arts from the Eighteenth Century to the Present (Palgrave, 2017, with Jana Funke).

Jen works closely with LGBT+ activists and support groups, as well as museums, schools, youth workers and health practitioners to explore how artefacts from the past can get people talking about sex, relationships, gender and sexuality today. She tweets from @jenniferegrove

About the Author Armistead Maupin was born in Washington, D.C., in 1944 but grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, he served as a naval officer in the Mediterranean and with the River Patrol Force in Vietnam.

Maupin worked as a reporter for a newspaper in Charleston, South Carolina, before being assigned to the San Francisco bureau of the Associated Press in 1971. In 1976 he launched his groundbreaking Tales of the City serial in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Maupin is the author of nine novels, including the six-volume Tales of the City series, Maybe the Moon, The Night Listener and, most recently, Michael Tolliver Lives. Three miniseries starring Olympia Dukakis and Laura Linney were made from the first three Tales novels. The Night Listener became a feature film starring Robin Williams and Toni Collette.

Benjamin Clementine is a singer, songwriter, pianist and former busker whose debut album ‘At Least For Now’ won the 2015 Mercury Music Prize.

In a recent interview with the Independent Benjamin opened up about his time at school and being bullyed for being a “feminine boy” and being bullyed for being perseved as gay when he was hetrosexual and feminine. His songs tell the powerful story of his survival through years of homelessness and despair as a struggling young man. Having escaped a troubled home in North London aged just 20, he ended up in Paris, but when he ran out of money, his life became a daily toil of rough sleeping and busking on the Metro. Through necessity, he spent two years honing his craft and technique through necessity. Eventually, he returned to London, and made an enormous impact with his television debut on Later… with Jools Holland in October 2013.

Clementine made a big first impression with his television debut on Later… with Jools Holland in October 2013. Since then, he has quickly earned a reputation for his unusual and honest songwriting and powerful vocals, gathering rave reviews from every quarter.

Bath LGBT+ Pride is a celebration where LGBT+ groups, organisations and members of the community can meet, socialize and learn about the services on offer for them in Bath and celebrate the diversity of the city with other communities.

Launched in 2008, with the first ever Pride festival being held in Swindon. In 2009, the Pride event was expanded to incorporate Swindon & Wiltshire Pride.

Held in the Town Gardens, Swindon. The atmosphere within the park is vibrant and the Bowl Stage provides the perfect setting for a wonderful event.

Weston-Super-Mare Pride www.wsmpride.com The annual celebration of LGBT+ equality and diversity held in Weston- Super-Mare. Kicking off the day with a parade the celebrations continue in the beautiful victorian Grove Park with community stands & entertainment.
