What is Black History Month?

Black History Month (BHM) is a commemoration of iconic people and moments in the history of the African Diaspora. It focuses on those who have and continue to make a difference to the advancement and celebration of Africa Caribbean people.

What does Black History Month in Bristol mean for me?

BHM is an ideal opportunity to get to know more about the history and heritage of Britain’s African and Caribbean Communities. It’s an opportunity to celebrate Bristol as a multicultural city, learn more about Bristol’s diverse communities and to take part in various events.

What is the theme for Black History Month this year?

Black History Month is a chance for the whole city to edify and enlighten each other on the achievements and contributions made to our communities.

It also aims to motivate and inspire all generations to make their dreams a reality by reaching their full potential in life and developing strengths, talents and embracing positivity within communities.

Where are the events held?

Events are held and organised across the city and surrounding areas by individual, voluntary groups, local authorities, primary care trusts and libraries. All projects use the skills and experiences of the local workforce and community in the planning and delivery.

Jamaicans In Bristol, is a true story a real factual historical documentary about the journey from Jamaica to Bristol over 60 years by members of the community and so told from their experience.

In Darkness Blooms November 4 and runs through to January 8, 2012 View Art Gallery www.viewgallery.co.uk The Cereus flower, also known as the Night Princess, opens only in the hours of darkness, bearing a sumptuous fragrance. ‘In Darkness Blooms’ features six artists that express their connection to their hidden worlds. They capture and cultivate a magical beauty that seeks enlightenment and hope from inner darkness.

Rosie Emerson adopts a unique medium known as collage photography. Largescale works are created from digital manipulation of photographs of women overlaid with jewellery and styled with paint and ink. Emerging from the shadows are striking images, meticulously planned, but oozing drama and intrigue.

Beth Carter makes a welcome return to View with new pieces that perfectly interpret the exhibition theme. Her self-imagined mythical creatures challenge the immediacy of our judgments and encourage us to look inside the mind. Is the initially imposing 7-foot minotaur a powerful aggressor or is he a vulnerable and thoughtful beast?

In Damian Daly’s drawings we see an artist combining total freedom of expression with incredible technical quality. In this new collection he creates 10 characters that are born from a single stroke of a pencil. Each being evolves as the artist observes and builds on his own creation, triggering the next movement from an almost unconscious state, bringing his inner thoughts, memories and imagination to the fore.

The multiple layering of dark resin over flowers creates a world where beauty is preserved forever but can be touched only by our imagination. Are these delicate objects protected or imprisoned?

As the work of Fran Williams continues to soar in popularity, this all new collection retains the raw emotion in subtle tones of self portraiture narrative. A seemingly in-exhaustive expression of feeling continues to grab our hearts and tie them in knots as we are stimulated to reflect on our own personal interpretations. Devil and angel interchanges with every fleeting glance.

The art of tattooing plays an important role in Jacob Dahlstrup’s sculptures and drawings. From paper to skulls and human bodies, there appears to be no constraint on the objects which can be the subject of these intricate markings. New work for View focuses on the artist’s favourite medium of charcoal pencil, but the subjects are far from traditional.

In Darkness Blooms opens at View Art Gallery on November 4 and runs through to January 8, 2012. Gallery members private view is on November 3.

Lee Mead – The Love Tour announced Acclaimed West End star Lee Mead will take to the road in 2012 as he embarks upon The Love Tour, an exclusive seven date nationwide tour presented by Raymond Gubbay. Lee will be joined by his talented band and West End star Louise Dearman to perform a collection of love songs and hits from his new album.

Lee shot to fame when he won the BBC’s ‘Any Dream Will Do’, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s national search to find the lead in his production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He subsequently enjoyed a successful run in this hit musical at the Adelphi Theatre, which was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.

Since then, Lee has established himself as one of the leading names in musical theatre, having played Fiyero in Wicked and more recently Emmett in Legally Blonde. Lee has also played the main role in a national tour of Oscar Wilde’s Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime.

Lee will be joined by Louise Dearman, one of Britain’s leading West End actresses who has taken lead roles in Evita, Guys and Dolls and most recently, Wicked.

Run for your life How many of you remember those awful cross country runs that you used to have to do in the middle of winter, across muddy (or frozen) fields, with some sadistic PE teacher barking orders at you? It’s hardly surprising that many people were put off running as a result. I certainly include myself in that category. In fact, after I left school, I didn’t run again until I was 35.

Some people have asked me what got me into running again after such a long time, and I can’t really remember the exact reason – probably a combination of the few extra pounds, and the constant huffing and puffing whenever I exerted myself. I felt about 50, not 35.

I started on the treadmill at the gym, but soon got bored with staring at my red and sweaty face in the mirror, so I started to run outside, so that everyone could look at my red and sweaty face! And I can’t say that I enjoyed it all that much to begin with either. I was living in Brighton at the time and there were always plenty of people running up and down the promenade who were faster than me.

But gradually I got into it and it got easier and I could run further without being so tired. And it was incredibly liberating – I could go where I wanted and it was total ‘me time’. Before I knew it, I suddenly realised that I was a proper runner – never a jogger! And that was when I started entering events locally.

Now don’t get me wrong, but there was never a chance that I was going to win anything, but taking part in a properly organised 5k or 10k does bring out the competitive side in you – wanting not only to beat other people, but to push yourself as hard as you can. All of a sudden I found myself entering half marathons and have even been loopy enough to run a marathon three times, including London and Brighton.

Up and running So where am I headed with all of this, I hear you cry? It’s simple – I believe that running is one of the most effective forms of exercise that there is. Studies have shown that it can increase general fitness significantly, help reduce the risk of

heart disease and also help with weight loss. So if you are thinking of getting started, here are my basic rules: Make sure you buy proper running shoes that are right for your style of running.

Go to a running shop – there are loads of them up and down the country (in Bristol, two of the most popular are Up and Running, and Sweatshop) – and get them to fit you with the right type of shoe. Yes they will be more expensive than buying them at Sports Direct, but these are an investment in yourself and well worth it as you will be less likely to injure yourself.

Buy some proper running socks – they can help prevent chafing and blisters.

I don’t believe that you have to spend a fortune on technical clothing, not if you are just starting out. Just make sure that you wear something that is comfortable, not too tight, and something you won’t overheat in. If you want to buy technical stuff, there is plenty to choose from, and you can go the cheap route here.

Start out slowly – even if you have been running for a while, don’t push yourself too much. You are more likely to injure yourself if you do too much too soon.

On that note – don’t run with an injury or if you feel ill. You will only make things worse.

Be safe. If you are running at night, make sure you have at least some high-viz item on so that you can be seen by cars, cyclists and pedestrians.

Also, if you are running on or near to roads or cycle paths, you might want to ditch the iPod, as it could mean you won’t hear traffic or bikes.

Get yourself a copy of Runners World magazine – it really is the bible as far as runners are concerned. It is full of great advice, dietary tips, shoe reviews, and injury prevention and treatment articles.

Join a running club – it’s great to be around like-minded people. There are only a few LGBT running clubs in the UK and none that I know of in the southwest. However, most running clubs are very welcoming and you can meet new friends and pick up some great help and advice.

Pop along to a ‘parkrun’. These are FREE 5k runs held every Saturday in parks around the UK – see www.parkrun.com – and are open to people of all ages and abilities. In our region, there are parkruns in Ashton Court, Bristol (of which I am Race Director!), Exeter, Swindon, Newport and Cardiff. They are very welcoming to beginners!

Running isn’t for everyone – some people will simply struggle with the mechanics and may constantly get injured, but these are in the minority. You only have to look at the number of people running round the Downs in Clifton every day in all kinds of weather to see how popular running has become. And you can take your running shoes wherever you go!

Launches October 2011

BLUF@Bristol launches this October 2011, with BLUF guys meeting up up from across the South West of England, the West Country, South & West Wales, the South Midlands and further afield, Meeting at one of Bristol’s regular monthly leather & fetish nights, GEAR at Club O. BLUF@Bristol has been a long time coming.

A small group of regular leather lads, and BLUF members, started chatting about wanting to hold a regular BLUF meet & party in the city, because, “there’s enough of us around here”.

Local Bristol lads had taken their inspiration from a previous BLUF meet that was held in the City in 2007.

That party was organised by BLUF member Dirtymechanic, Mat. With Bristol chosen as the hub for the South West and West of the UK, a good turnout was seen with BLUF guys attending from Bristol itself, with guys travelling from Bournemouth, Devon, Cornwall, South Wales and as far as Birmingham. It was a fun night, and as Mat wrote, the “Outdoor smoking area saw plenty of leather n cigar action” Local leather lads left with the feeling that Bristol offered an opportunity to build on.

“What was certain is that we were left with the impression that BLUF members will travel to a meet and party to socialise in relaxed, comfortable surrounds to meet other BLUF guys to share our passions. Plus we had a lot of fun that night learning a lot from established BLUF guys! social and otherwise”, says SBerg, one of BLUF@Bristol organisers for October.

This year, the organising team, decided to organise an informal ‘dummy run’ and flash-mob a regular Bristol GEAR night in June.

A friendly welcome is extended to all fellow BLUF members to come and visit the city, celebrate a step forward for BLUF with a new group being established; making some new friends and catch up with those hot Bristol guys you’ve been talking to on-line for what is turning out to be an exciting night in the autumn.

Stonewall welcomes new Government amendments on gay sex convictions Proposals now cover loitering with intent prosecutions Stonewall today welcomed new amendments to the Protections of Freedoms Bill tabled by the Government. The Bill will remove records of gay men convicted of offences involving consenting sex that would now be lawful. The new amendments, called for by Stonewall, would also allow gay men maliciously convicted of ‘loitering with intent’ under Section 4 of the Vagrancy Act 1824 to have them removed from their criminal record too.

‘We warmly welcome the Government’s decision to table these amendments and will encourage all parties to support them,’ said Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill. ‘Stonewall lobbied hard for gay men to be able to apply for convictions for consensual gay sex to be removed from their records. Not only were those convictions unfair but their presence on people’s records has dissuaded many of those men from applying for jobs or volunteering their time to good causes.’

‘We’re grateful to Home Office officials who have worked on this issue ever since we first met them as long ago as 2003,’ said Ben Summerskill. ‘Many police forces across Britain were until the recent past often highly creative in the way they unfairly prosecuted gay men. Consequently, we strongly welcome these provisions being extended to men prosecuted for what was often a trumped-up charge of loitering with intent.’.

Stonewall gave evidence to the Public Bill Committee considering the Protection of Freedoms Bill on 24 March 2011

Stonewall today warmly welcomed David Cameron’s party conference speech referring to extending the legal form of marriage to gay people.

In his speech, the prime minister said: ‘I once stood before a Conservative conference and said it shouldn’t matter whether commitment was between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and another man. You applauded me for that. Five years on, we’re consulting on legalising gay marriage. And to anyone who has reservations, I say: Yes, it’s about equality, but it’s also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society is stronger when we make vows to each other and support each other. So I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative. I support gay marriage because I’m a Conservative.’

‘We warmly welcome David Cameron’s commitment,’ said Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive. ‘It’s unthinkable that a Conservative prime minister would have felt able to say this a decade ago. We look forward to the government now implementing this commitment within the lifetime of this parliament, as promised.’

I am struggling to think of a politician who ideologically sits further away from a ‘queer’ approach to politics than Rick Perry, who has just entered the race to become the Republican Presidential Candidate. I focus specifically on Perry as he is riding a wave of support that has tipped him to win the chance to go head to head with Obama in 2012 and possibly become the next President of the United States of America. Perry is a man who not only holds deeply unpleasant political views but someone who justifies them through a contradictory ideology.

Perry is vehemently anti state intervention. He has developed into perhaps the ultimate neo-liberal (in the classical British sense of the word opposed to the American understanding of a [lefty] ‘liberal’). Yet, if we look at some of his key policy areas we can see a Grand Canyon size contradiction. In his 10 years as Governor of Texas he consistently slashed state funding, supported the use of the death penalty, and strongly opposed civil partnerships for same sex couples.

In one light Perry backs the American dream. Your chance to succeed, whoever you are, and the state’s responsibility is simply not to get in your way. He notoriously described a bill to ban texting whilst driving as, “a government effort to micromanage the behaviour of adults”. This ideological drive to avoid state intervention resulted in the state budget in Texas to tumble during his oversight. Yet on the flip side of this apparent obsession with avoiding state intervention he appears to back the State when it takes away someone’s life, stops two people from marrying or denies a child’s access to sufficient sex education.

The American dreams rests on the concept of a meritocracy – the idea that if you have talent and you work hard you will succeed. As soon you mix a potent dash of discrimination into this formula you end up with entire sections of the population being hampered, either by the state or through individual prejudice. Perry appears to actively support the state in discriminating and is oblivious to the reality of individuals holding discriminatory views.

This level of tacit homophobia is not surprising, in 2010 Rick Perry’s fellow Texas Republicans voted on a party platform about LGBT Americans, saying: “We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases…Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable, alternative lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should family be redefined to include homosexual couples.”

It might be silly season in the UK but across the pond they are laying the foundations for how the most powerful country in the world is going to be governed for the next 4 years. Be under no illusion that if Perry is at the helm, the fight for LGBT rights will face an uphill struggle.
