Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival 2017 Thu 16 - Sun 19 Mar 2017 / Colston Hall, Bristol

From swing to funk, bebop to blues, Gypsy jazz to gospel, soul to rock ‘n roll, Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival never fails to surprise and delight music lovers. The festival’s genre-traversing line-up is a ‘This is Your Life’ of jazz and blues – a journey through the decades from the birth of jazz to the current day. This year’s line-up features the wonderful Macy Gray, a live show from prolific producer and musician Quantic featuring Alice Russell, the world premiere of Andy Sheppard’s Metropolis live score, a big band tribute to the legendary Dizzy Gillespie led by his friend and fellow be-bop founder, Bobby Shew and ‘Sounds for Spies & Private Eyes’ – a musical spectacular featuring Adrian Utley (Portishead), Will Gregory (Goldfrapp), The Army Of Generals string orchestra and an 18-piece Big Band. If you think you know jazz and blues, you’re probably wrong! If you love music, you’ll love Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival. We’ve dipped into every genre and traversed the globe to bring you a line-up dedicated to the incredible musical legacy of jazz and blues; from swing to funk, bebop to blues, Gypsy jazz to Gospel, soul to rock ‘n roll. We’ll take you on a toe-tapping journey through a century of jazz and blues: starting off with the birth of jazz in New Orleans and the great blues men of the Mississippi Delta; taking in the wartime swing era and the original hipsters of the post-war beat generation; swinging by the ‘60s and ‘70s for an education in funk and finishing up in the present day when the world’s biggest jazz and blues stars are heavily influenced by these past eras. Jazz gave birth to soul and rock ‘n roll, created blues and funk, nurtured swing and inspired some of the world’s greatest artists – from Louis Armstrong to Nina Simone, BB King to Frank Sinatra, James Brown to George Gershwin. If you think you know jazz and blues, you’re probably wrong!

Metropolis with Live Score by Andy Sheppard Thursday, March 16th Time: 20:00-21:30 Colston Hall, Hall One Ticket price: £18/£22/£26

Join us for the world premiere of British composer and conductor Andy Sheppard’s live score of German filmmaker Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece, Metropolis. Accompanied by his hand-picked, 10-piece band Andy has conceived a wall of brass set against wild guitars and electronica laid over percussion, computers and treated and untreated saxophones. Andy will be playing live and conducting the band which includes Norwegian electric guitar wizard Eivind Aarsetand and Italian virtuoso percussionist Michele Rabbia. An ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) recording artist, bandleader and composer, Andy Sheppard is one of Europe’s leading saxophonists and one of the few British musicians to have made a significant impact on the international jazz scene, playing and writing for settings from solo to big band and chamber orchestra. Lang’s dystopian sci-fi epic has become a cult classic but its allegory of a future where an exploited, subterranean underclass works to support a small aristocracy living in palatial skyscrapers received a mixed and puzzled reception at the time of its release. It went on to become one of the landmarks of world cinema and has influenced generations of filmmakers and musicians. Are we facing a dystopian future? Will music save the world? Find out at our screening of Metropolis.

The Bobby Shew Big Band – ‘My Friend Dizzy’ Sunday, March 19th Time: 16:30-18:00 Colston Hall, Hall One Ticket price: £25/£22/£18

Veteran trumpeter Bobby Shew has shared the stage with many a musical legend over the years but none are more dear to him than old friend, trumpet genius and co-founder of the bebop style, Dizzy Gillespie. Born John Birks Gillespie in Cheraw, South Carolina, 1917, Dizzy would have been 100 this year. To mark the centenary of his birth and to honour the enormous contribution he made to popular culture in his lifetime, Shew will join Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival Artistic Director Denny Ilett and the Bruce/Ilett Big Band for a concert celebrating the man that set the standard for jazz improvisation in the 1940’s. As a fellow trumpeter and friend, Shew was close to Dizzy both on and off the bandstand. Come and see this master at work as he plays from the best of the Dizzy songbook in heartfelt tribute to the man and the music that changed the face of the world.

Pride and Joy: A guide for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans parents

Authors: Sarah & Rachel Hagger-Holt Publisher: Pinter & Martin Ltd Language: English ISBN-10: 1780664206 ISBN-13: 978-1780664200

Synopsis There have always been lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) parents. But now there is a ‘gayby boom’. Changes in social attitudes, the law and medical technology mean that more LGBT people are becoming parents, and living proud and open family lives. Yet there are still few role models. Pride and Joy is full of stories, advice and real-life experience from LGBT parents and their children. Sometimes funny, sometimes moving, sometimes surprising, every story sheds new light on what it’s like for LGBT people raising children in the UK and Ireland today. Pride and Joy is positive and practical. It covers everything from starting a family, dealing with schools, talking with children about different families, and maintaining an LGBT identity as a parent. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to better understand issues facing LGBT families including parents or prospective parents; extended families and friends; and social workers, teachers and other professionals.

About the Author Sarah and Rachel Hagger-Holt are lesbian parents with two young children. Rachel is a clinical psychologist and Sarah works in charity communications. Together, they have previously written Living It Out: A survival guide for lesbian, gay and bisexual Christians, their friends, families and churches.

Moonlight 15

Release Date: 2016 Country of Origin: USA Director: Barry Jenkins Cast: Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders

A timeless story of human connection and self-discovery, this exquisite coming of age drama chronicles the life of a gay black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in Miami. An Oscar® favourite and one of the most important films of the year, Moonlight is being hailed as a masterpiece that demands to be seen. Three actors (Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, André Holland), three ages, one soul: Barry Jenkins’ beautiful, sensitive Moonlight tells its gripping story in three passages. It spans the youth, adolescence and adulthood of Chiron, growing up poor, gay and black in Florida, navigating the drug-plagued inner city, finding love in unexpected places, and discovering the possibility of change within himself. Filled with unforgettable performances and awash in a gorgeous dreaminess, Moonlight is truly a thing of beauty that will shatter stereotype after stereotype. It is a fiercely intelligent, compassionate film that is, ultimately, about identity, about finding connections in a lonely world, and how we all try to prevent ourselves from getting hurt. This film is, as one reviewer put it, is “the reason we go to the movies: to understand, to come closer, to ache - hopefully with another”.

In 1990, seven young male dancers – 6 gay, 1 straight – joined Madonna on her most controversial tour. On stage and in the iconic Madonna film Truth or Dare they showed the world – and a whole generation of young queer people – how to “express yourself”. Strike a Pose introduces us to the dancers 25 years later, as they reveal the truth about life during and after the tour. A dramatic tale about family, brotherhood, overcoming shame and HIV stigma and finding the courage to be who you are, this is an unexpectedly affecting film that will take you to places you don’t expect to go and will, in doing so, warm your heart. One of Outburst’s favourite films of 2016 and an absolute must for Madonna fans. Music

Macy Gray 16-19 March 2017 / www.bristoljazzandbluesfest.com

A gifted songwriter and dazzlingly singular singer, the mom of three teenagers has been overturning fan expectation and industry formula since kicking off her music career with her debut 2000 release, On How Life Is. That musical calling card kicked off a career ride that includes multiple awards, over 25 million units sold, and a thriving acting career. What awards and sales figures fail to illustrate is the depth and breadth of Macy’s artistry. In an industry that is increasingly stifling of real artists, she’s forged her own vision, creating music that leaps genre barriers from experimental soul to alternative rock, from retro-disco to hip-hop. In 2016, Macy Gray made her Chesky Records debut with the jazz-infused album, ‘Stripped’. Paired with an awe-inspiring jazz ensemble that includes Ari Hoenig, Daryl Johns, Russell Malone and Wallace Roney, Macy’s voice is given the space and freedom to truly shine. Featuring new songs, intriguing covers and stunning new arrangements of her classic hits like “I Try,” this show is sure to be one of this year’s highlights.

“Specialising in low light flashless photography for stage shows Vonalina captures the intermit atmospheres of her subjects with out the intrusion of flash.”

Vonalina is the talent behind so many of the images which have captured the essence of the cultural events over the last few seasons. Her unique ability to capture the atmosphere of the moment, without the intrusion of flash and maintaining its integrity with a minimal approach to post production creates her style which is reminiscent of Leibovitz with the sense of fun of Lachapelle. Where do you get your inspiration from ? I’m inspired by so many things, so many other photographers and ultimately the situation I’m in. Vivian Maier, Ansel Adams, Gary Winogrand, Dorothea Lange, Cindy Sherman, Weegee, Bruce Davidson, Christer Strömholm. (I know I could go on) And closer to home my friend Tony Barrett Powell who has been so kind and generous in his guidance and I’ve learned so much from him.

Culture

Vonalina Cake Photographer /www.vonalinacakephotography.com

What kind of camera do you use? I started out doing *proper photography* with a Lumix bridge and it served me very well as a starter, I then went on to Nikon D3100 and I’ve recently upgraded to a Nikon D750, a beast of a camera! How much creative freedom do you have on an editorial shoot? I’ve not done much but what I have had used in websites, promo or editorial has been guided by the client but mostly I go on instinct. How important are personal projects to you ? Very! I like to challenge myself a little bit and try new things, I plan to work on my street photography this year...very different from the events I’ve been mostly doing.

Culture

Vonalina Cake Photographer /www.vonalinacakephotography.com

How much preparation goes into a shoot? It depends, If I’m doing a show I like to find out a bit about each performer, look at what’s gone before. For a party I find out what kind of crowd it’s going to be and then get stuck in. I like to know the layout of a venue and find my spot so I don’t get in anyone’s way. How much do you do in post production? I like to sharpen, brighten, crop and tidy but I don’t use photoshop or try to alter anyone. I’m a kind editor of course but I want to capture the real thing. Do you think a photographer needs a philosophy to do good work ? I don’t know. In any job i think good manners are a must, I like to know who I’m working with, chat, be quite informal. Among your works, which one is your favourite? Why? Favourites...would you ask me to choose my favourite chid? haha. There are some stand outs though, when going through an edit i sometimes say to myself *yes, that’s a good one*! One of the main images on my site and business cards is from a Silver Factory party for Horseplay with Lydia L’Scabies and Alfie Ordinary as Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol. I do really like that one.

Culture

Vonalina Cake Photographer /www.vonalinacakephotography.com

Whose work has influenced you most? It changes all the time, what made me get into photography was photography itself and a never ending quest to get the perfect shot. A somewhat elusive beast at times. I do get obsessed by some though...Vivian Maier and Weegee, such mysterious characters in their own ways and they produced such diverse work. The down at heel, the down and outs, the kids, the glamour and so much more. And Christer Strömholm’s work with Parisian prostitutes and trans workers is remarkable What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? How to do it!!! It took me a long time to get to where I am now with technical skills and I’m learning every day. Describe your photographic style? How did you develop your style? I like strong colours and moody backgrounds. Lighting is always a challenge, but ultimately i want to capture what my eyes see. Sounds simplistic but what I mean is I don’t like to amp it up too much. I enjoy the shapes people make, the lines of their bodies and the facial expressions. I am lucky...I’ve had some incredible subjects in the burlesque drag, LGBTQ and performance scene around Bristol. It’s rich, diverse and incredibly entertaining.
