Mistress and Misfit Date: 11 Feb 2018 Times: 20:00 Venues: Bristol Old Vic Tickets: £16 Delivered with a razor sharp wit, softened only by her deliciously mischievous delivery and endless charm, Shappi Khorsandi presents England’s unsung heroine, Emma Hamilton. For too many years she has been known as just ‘Nelson’s mistress’ and a bit of a harlot (you get ONE job in a brothel and bang goes your reputation...). Women’s lib wasn’t a ‘thing’ in Georgian times, Emma moved mountains to haul herself from ‘scullery maid’ to ‘Lady Hamilton’. Yes, she occasionally danced on tables naked to get ahead in life, but who hasn’t? About Shappi Shappi established herself as one of the country’s finest comedians in 2006 with her sell out Edinburgh show, Asylum Speaker. This show lead to the publication of her childhood memoirs, “A Beginner’s Guide To Acting English“, her best selling literary debut. In typical Shappi style, this show told the story of how her family were forced to flee Iran and gain asylum in the UK. Her father’s popularity as a satirist attacking the regime has ensured they cannot return to Iran. As Shappi says, “obviously there’s free speech in Iran, but little freedom after you’ve spoken.” Shappi’s career has taken her to all corners of the globe, she has appeared on countless TV & Radio shows including; Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You, QI, Just a Minute & other flagship radio 4 programmes. She is proud of being a “spit & sawdust” standup & one of her favourite things is pulling on her wellies, trudging through muddy fields, and performing at every music festival which has a comedy tent – from Glastonbury to Secret Garden Party. She has received an honorary doctorate from Winchester University for her contribution to the arts and recently received the prestigious James Joyce award from Dublin University. She is also currently hoping to receive an apology from Ealing Council for consistently failing to remove her bins on time. WWW.OUTBRISTOL.CO.UK

A Fantastic Woman 15

Venue: Watershed Bristol Preview Date: Sat 10 Feb 2018 18:10 Main run: 2-8 March 2018 Director: Sebastián Lelio Cast: Daniela Vega, Francisco Reyes, Luis Gnecco Length: 104 mins Bristol Tickets: www.watershed.co.uk

Chilean director Sebastián Lelio follows up his 2013 hit Gloria with this luminous and life-affirming gem about a young transgender woman struggling to live with her own grief - and the prejudice she suffers - after the death of her lover. When her older lover dies one night, Marina (Daniela Vega in a knockout performance) is left shaken. The aftermath, however, is even worse: instead of being able to mourn, she is treated with suspicion by the police, spoken to like a criminal, and forced to deal with the callous (and violent) reactions of her dead partner’s family. Marina is a trans woman and her sexual identity is seen as an abberation, a perversion - so she struggles for the right to be herself - a truly complex, strong, and fantastic woman... A beautifully compassionate and tender look at the everyday obstacles of trans existence, A Fantastic Woman is a powerful, touching film. We would love to see Daniela Vega be the first trans actress to pick up a major acting award - let’s see what happens...

A community bakery located in Old Market. Making handmade bread, pastries and cakes using seasonal and responsibly sourced ingredients. Our sourdough started all this. People raved about the taste, the crumb and the authenticity so we wanted to see what we were made of. As we looked to expand our repertoire we didn’t want to grow up too fast and compromise on taste when baking more. Everything we made we wanted to have the same impact as our sourdough did. We wanted the best tasting croissant, the best tasting salted caramel peanut cup (my favourite...) or the best tasting sausage roll. If it wasn’t best in class, we didn’t want to sell it. We also have a red electric wholesale delivery van! This personal service is also felt in our bakery in Old Market as it’s not often you can be served by the very bakers who have made what you’re buying.
