Welcome to Out Bristol an independent community magazine and website for the LGBT+ communities of the West of England.

Established in 2008 as an independent free access website and guide that joins up the dots to create a hub linking to further support and information.

The website and guide quickly turned into a magazine with the same aims as the website as a hub, showcasing what’s on in the region for LGBT+ people. This developed to linking with the tourism board to showcase the great things happening in the city region. The site is now the LGBT+ tourism site for the region, with links to information on where to stay, attractions, festivals and the LGBT+ Scene.

We have an open source policy for the site, magazine and social media which means all outbristol

I see the double take all the time. Peppering the routine Monday chit-chat with rugby often provokes a visible mental clash when you’re talking about a queer documentary not two minutes later. Sportsmanship and homosexuality tend to be acknowledged independently, yet fail to find a synergy between the two; particularly with the more ‘masculine’ sports.

Inclusivity is still largely in its infancy, with an increasing number of out, queer sportspeople filling the channels at every major event. Alongside the ‘old-school’ likes of Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, recent years have seen the rise of personalities such as Tom Daley, Caitlyn Jenner and Adam Rippon, who put forward their queer lifestyles for all to see in the public eye. The 2018 Winter Olympics saw the live broadcast of Gus Kenworthy kissing his boyfriend before his qualifiers, something previously unprecedented amongst televised sports. However, there is still a significant disconnection between queer representation and celebrated athleticism, particularly within the more ‘masculine’ sports.

Figures such as Nigel Owens, Keegan Hirst and Gareth Thomas show the presence of queer men within the rugby circuit, while organizational efforts, including those by Stonewall and England Rugby, endeavour to promote inclusivity within the sport. Recent initiatives such as the Rainbow Laces campaign have bolstered the accessibility to wider masses, adopted by the England Rugby team with sponsorship from Aviva and Stonewall, acting as a forefront of inclusivity issues in mainstream sports. However, the

unfortunately high amount of vitriol online show why such measures are still necessary, and why the presence of inclusive sports, including Inclusive Rugby, is key to reaching a more integrated future.

I came along to my first training session with the Bisons last October, not really knowing what to expect.

My previous, minor, experience with rugby largely revolved around innate athleticism, bonding over girls and terms like ‘fag’ and ‘gay’ being hurled around as insults; which still manifested in my pre-conceptions.

Looking back on the past 6 months, I can honestly say that I have not regretted a single moment. The club itself, and the wider IGR (Inclusive Gay Rugby) community, bring no assumptions with them, demands of physicality, nor any stereotypes that propagate throughout. The amalgamation of inclusivity and sport goes above and beyond all expectation, with nothing but potential to improve the game, the community and the livelihoods of anyone who gets involved.

Diamond is an unforgiving queer performance of sexuality and British culture exploring LGBT history from 1957 to 2018 through the personal biography of avant garde performer David Hoyle.

Weaving together intimate personal accounts and landmark events, Diamond charts David’s rise from a gay adolescent in Blackpool, through famous Channel 4 anti-drag queen cult phenomena Divine David, to the performer he is today.

“The show is a celebration of survival against overwhelming odds. We have a LGBT history we are proud of.” – David Hoyle.

Revisiting landmark events such as the Wolfenden Report, the decriminalisation of homosexuality, the repeal of Section 28 and the lives of prominent gay figures such as Alan Turing, and more recent LGBT political activists, Diamond offers moments of reflection and insights into this history and on-going struggle for equality.

An unforgiving piece of avant-garde theatre, Diamond navigates the transformation of gay countercultures, queer gender and sexuality, and British social attitudes, and will appeal to all with liberation in their heart.

Bath LGBT+ Pride is a celebration where LGBT+ groups, organisations and members of the community can meet, socialize and learn about the services on offer for them in Bath and celebrate the diversity of the city with other communities.

Launched in 2008, with the first ever Pride festival being held in Swindon. In 2009, the Pride event was expanded to incorporate Swindon & Wiltshire Pride.

Held in the Town Gardens, Swindon. The atmosphere within the park is vibrant and the Bowl Stage provides the perfect setting for a wonderful event.

Weston-Super-Mare Pride www.wsmpride.com The annual celebration of LGBT+ equality and diversity held in Weston- Super-Mare. Kicking off the day with a parade the celebrations continue in the beautiful victorian Grove Park with community stands & entertainment.

Gloucestershire Pride
