Louis Whitaker Brings Broadway to Puerto Vallarta By Alexi Chacon NYC Critic and Culture Writer

artículo en español 6

Louis Whitaker is making Puerto Vallarta’s performing arts scene his playground as he awes visitors and longtime residents alike. Where most people see Puerto Vallarta as a vacation spot to receive respite from their day-to-day life, Whitaker saw more. He saw a place where he could build a life of his own as a performer, an advocate, and as a gay man. N i g h t l i fe

2022 NIGHTLIFE

Whitaker’s story is anything but typical. He was born in Kansas and raised in rural Missouri by strict religious parents. After coming out at 17 years old he was kicked out of his home. He started to grow a chosen family from the queer theatre community. This would not be the first time that Whitaker was handed lemons that he so effortlessly turned into lemonade. He immediately applied to the BFA program at Missouri State University and was accepted into the prestigious program. This education laid the groundwork for his performing career here in PV. Whitaker received another lemon and graduated into the pandemic. He desperately wanted to use the skills he had developed. He wanted to be on the stage even in an industry that was currently paralyzed by the pandemic. Whitaker took a trip to PV after getting vaccinated hoping to clear his head and figure out next steps. What he saw surprised him - performers on stage actually practicing the craft they love, bringing joy to audiences during a pandemic. It was settled, Whitaker would continue his performing career in PV. A place that started as a vacation destination turned into his new home. He soon got contracted by Act2PV, the largest live theatre venue in the city. After less than a year living in the city, he is performing all across the bay and is now headlining his own solo cabaret show Broadway Backwards with Broadway Pianist Brett Rowe at Act2PV. I was given the chance to see him perform on his fall and was blown away. The show is deeply personal as Whitaker Winter 2022

takes you on his journey to PV through popular Broadway showtunes. Each showtune sung by him has been traditionally performed by a woman on Broadway. This gender bending performance is absolutely not one to miss. His show has already turned the ear of a few Broadway producers and he is already in talks to move to NYC. It’s clear that Whitaker is bringing Broadway to PV. If you are in PV you should not pass up the opportunity to see someone who is sure to be on Broadway soon. Whitaker has made himself a mainstay of the PV performing scene, popping up in some of the city’s most iconic venues. He started a Bottomless Brunch at La Cappella, a beautiful restaurant that overlooks Banderas Bay. Since he started, Whitaker has regularly sold out his performances. This is truly the best way to satiate your need for more of Whitaker’s crooning after your previous evening at Broadway Backwards. What is most impressive is his ability to bring audiences to all of his performances through his keen ability to befriend everyone. To go out with drinks with Whitaker means to accept being stopped at every passing table for a warm hello and a quick catch up. And if there is a table that didn’t stop him, well he’ll make sure to introduce himself to the table and pick up a few friends in the process. Whether you are here in PV for a few days or a couple of weeks, make sure to get to know Louis Whitaker and catch one of his shows. I promise it will feel like you are hitching a ride on a shooting star. N i g h t l i fe

2022 NIGHTLIFE requires a lot of dedication and effort. A single truffle entails anywhere from 11 to 21 steps. From hand polishing each mold to painting, decorating, filling, and closing each truffle.

Xocodiva Adds Flavor to Vallarta By Salvador Dominguez

Chocolate is a treasure that must be valued, smelled, savored and enjoyed. It’s a treasure you’ll find at local Chocolatier Xocodiva Artisan Chocolate, whose truffles are beautiful hand-crafted artisan work, each one carefully decorated and painted by hand. Experts reveal that chocolate was discovered by the indigenous people of Central America accidentally, producing beer with the pulp of cocoa pods and learning to use the waste from the process. A new study confirmed that we have known chocolate for more than three thousand years, 500 more than previously thought. The creation of the truffle is generally attributed to the French pastry chef Louis Dufour (Chambéry, France). In December 1895 Dufour ran out of supplies for his business, and his ego would not allow him to ask other pastry chefs for help - so he decided to make a quality product for his boutique, one that would maintain the taste of his demanding customers. He started mixing cream, added cocoa, vanilla and in no time the mixture was ready. He delicately began to assemble small balls by dipping them in a chocolate coating and then rolling them over the cocoa powder. This is how the first truffle was born, a French creation, in fact the last inspiration of pastry Chef Dufour. Xocodiva has similarity with these stories because of the dedication in its creation. Started by two Canadian chocolate lovers more than 14 years ago, in this little paradise that is Puerto Vallarta. Little by little they developed their products with exceptional delicacy, achieving the highest quality that has always been offered in their products. The cacao comes from Mexico, Peru, and other countries around the world, then gathered and then processed in Belgium where they have been processing the highest quality chocolate in the world since the 17th century. Xocodiva uses 73% cacao dark chocolate and 33% cacao milk chocolate. Xocodiva has always been focussed on making a world class product. Everything is made in small batches and all the truffles and other products are made by hand. Each piece of chocolate from the Xocodiva production kitchen has been tempered, hand-painted and decorated by hand with one hundred percent cocoa butter and other embellishments. They are natural flavors, all made in Puerto Vallarta. Their limoncello liqueur is a delight they also make in house! It’s painstaking work. The painting process is individual, a whole day is scheduled just for the painting and making the shells. The next day the truffles are filled and closed, a meticulous job that 10

N i g h t l i fe

Entering Xocodiva is already a delight, just looking at the beautiful truffles on display makes you want to jump in and eat them all. It evokes childhood, when you stood in front of the closest chocolate shop on your block and you started to choose which one you were going to order. It was choosing a treasure that would become your most precious jewel. This is what happens when you are standing in front of these “precious gems” - your gaze shines and you begin to savor them one by one. At the time of tasting, there is an explosion of flavor, pleasure and happiness. For just a moment, we return to our childhood, to that innocent happiness. That is why it becomes quite an experience to enter their store, from deciding which truffle you will take to enjoy. Our recommendations are the white or dark chocolate Passion Fruit, a heart-shaped truffle, filled with a naturally flavoured passion fruit ganache, Salted Caramel, a dark chocolate truffle filled with salted caramel and embellished with sea salt and the crown jewel is the Raspberry Hazelnut, filled with a fresh raspberry ganache, dark chocolate, and colored cocoa. But in general, the one you decide to take will be the right choice, let yourself be carried away by your impulse and let it be love at first sight! They have some additional delicious offering as well, the Barks, which are bars of chocolate made with different ingredients, for example, a dark chocolate bark with a beautiful swirl of mint white chocolate or a bark affectionately called “Chubby Hubby” with a mixture of dark chocolate, pretzel, caramel and milk chocolate. Xocodiva has three locations: their newly opened Xocodiva Café (combined with a stunning boutique by local designer Chantel Vintage Spoon Jewelry) on Aquiles Serdán # 369. It’s exquisitely decorated, has a great menu of food and drinks plus outstanding local organic coffee, and of course, their delectable chocolates to experience! You can also peek in on their production kitchen and see for yourself just what goes into the chocolate making process. They invite you to come and spend some time in their new cafe - do some work, meet a friend, read a book and have a classic, chai or marzipan frappe accompanied by a bagel or croissant and obviously to top off your visit, finish with a Passion Fruit Truffle, truly a delight. And until the end of January if you visit with a friend, they will happily serve your friend a coffee for you, that’s right, 2 for 1 coffee’s until the end of January! It’s based on a regular sized coffee order and just mention that you saw this article. The other two Xocodiva stores are for take out and are located at Basilio Badillo # 277, in the Romantic Zone and at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport in the International Departure Lounge, next to gate 11. Also check out their brand new website and choose which flavour truffle you will try! www.xocodiva-pv.com Winter 2022

The Mixer Bar

Puerto Vallarta Comes to Life at Night Your Guide to LGBTQ Bars in and around Zona Romantica By Salvador Dominguez

In a city that rarely sleeps, Puerto Vallarta nightlife offers something for everyone. That statement couldn’t be more true when it comes to LGBTQ+ bars and dance clubs. Nightlife is a fundamental part of Puerto Vallarta, and more so for the LGBTQ+ community.

Another bar that we recommend as a good start to the party is Mixer Bar. Their specialty is the giant drinks served in blenders with the six colors of the LGBTQ flag, of course with six different flavors. While you eat their spectacular ceviche tostadas you can enjoy their drag show. Its decoration is simple but colorful, you will feel free to sing all you want and start enjoying the party with its delicious drinks. It is one of the best options to go with your group of friends and that everyone is comfortable at a table, talking and singing. Fridays are girls’ nights and the Margaritas are two for $60 pesos. They also always have extra activities such as arts and crafts workshops for you to meet new friends! Address: In Plaza Romy, Ignacio L. Vallarta 228-Local 12 Hours: 12pm - 1am Website: www.facebook.com/TheMixerVallarta

In the heat of a few good drinks and dancing, you can transport yourself to a crazy fantasy surrounded by beautiful bodies and ready to have fun until dawn. The listings are in alphabetical order, by category, unless otherwise noted.

You can stay inside at one of its small tables or if you prefer outside it has a high bar where you can chat and feel in the party atmosphere of the gay circuit. The waiters are very friendly and are looking out for you all the time. They constantly have promotions on their drinks but it is not fixed, the day changes depending on the mood of the bar. Elixir Mixology Bar

If you are looking for an original, delicious and innovative place to have a signature cocktail you must go to Elixir. This small cozy bar is unlike anything in PV and the attention of its staff is second to none. The bar is (to our knowledge) the only lesbian owned bar in PV, and the owners will do their best to make you a perfect craft cocktail and make you feel at ease. To accompany the drinks they have four options of truly exquisite snacks, which includes a choice of cold meats, cheeses, dates, hummus, fruits, peppers, mixed nuts among others. Elixir’s owners support one hundred percent local businesses and for this reason they acquire small batches of artisanal liquors from different parts of Mexico. Hence the originality of their cocktails that makes it an experience to drink them. Going is an experience, from seeing their preparation at the bar to serving up your drink to you. For those of you who love to post to social media, this is your place! The drinks you order will be the most original drink you’ll have while in PV! One of the places enjoyed by the LGBTQ + community just a few feet from the famous Los Muertos Pier, La Chachalaca Bar, is an open and airy space where you can find a light atmosphere without pretense. In addition to the beautiful and unique interior, the outdoor space is one of the best spots. We recommend trying the margarita coffee or the green kilt. It is an ideal place to start the night with friends and enjoy good drinks. Definitely One six One is one of the best new options in the romantic zone.

When you arrive at this bar, your first impression is that it is very small and discreet, but once inside you are surprised by the space. Anonimo is an eclectic place that has three floors of fun. A bar full of Mexican mischief and authenticity from the moment you arrive. You are greeted by its majestic sign full of colors and light along with the image of a Muxe, which indicates that this bar has history and culture. With a completely canteen style, El Secreto de la Muxe has been gradually gaining ground in the nightlife world of the party. Especially because it is away from the romantic area and the gay neighborhood. Located in the center of old Vallarta, in the middle of a heterosexual party. Which makes it even more eclectic and exciting. Its forte are the imitation shows, if you like to sing the eighties ballads in Spanish and have fun with the occurrences of the drags, you will leave here very happy. Its small stage is very particular since it evokes those tents of the Mexican show of the 30’s only with the touch of the LGBTQ community full of brightness and cabaret glamor. This place (known as Mary’s winter home) is a mix of a picnic vibe with an 80’s feel. When did you imagine enjoying a great drag show while eating an exquisite hamburger? Well, at Mary’s you have both! The history of Hamburger Mary’s began in San Francisco with its first place, which was very small where only hamburgers and beers were served at night. Then they began to spread and now you can find them in many parts of the US, Chicago, Denver, Orlando, West Hollywood, Las Vegas and now they are here in Puerto Vallarta to delight us with their exuberant dishes. They have a very varied menu so you can get to eat a delicious hamburger, a salad or a giant sandwich. Six Questions with Jason DottleY You probably know Jason from starring as “Ty” in “Sordid Lives: The Series” or from one of his five Top 40 Billboard dance records, perhaps his one-man show tours, perhaps you have no clue! Either way, here’s your chance to get to know him better. Celebrating one-year of “Jason Dottley’s Naked Pool Party” at Casa Cupula, the every Saturday event featuring Dottley’s hand-selected greatest hits from the past 30 years, a body-positive purpose as their slogan says, “Every Body is Beautiful”, excellent food, craft cocktails, go-go’s and cash-winning contests, it’s no wonder Jason’s party has become the most popular clothing-optional party in PV. We got to ask him six questions! 1. What made you want a “body positive” pool party? I didn’t want to perpetuate the toxic narrative in our community of what it means to be beautiful. That narrative, no matter how many magazines I was on the cover of, or “sexiest” list on TMZ, lead me to eating disorders and always feeling less than. I wanted to create a space that made everyone feel COMFORTABLE and to celebrate the beauty that we all possess. 2. Do you get naked at your party? I take my clothes on and off

Winter 2022

a lot. But yes, I get naked at every party. I just go with the flow of what I tell my guests, “Do what makes you feel comfortable.” 3. Why did you choose Casa Cupula? Well, we chose each other. I stayed there for my first month in PV and I fell in love with the hotel, the staff and the owner Don. It’s simply the best. And they have supported my vision in a way that I am beyond grateful. The best for the best. 4. What else do you do in PV? I love Incanto. I did my last oneman show there “Life on the Gay-List” for 3 months, and working on a new all-comedy show there once their downstairs theatre opens again hopefully first of 2022. I also see shows at the Palm, and hit up the clubs on the gay street. Oh and eat a lot of street tacos. Mostly, I’m writing my first book and a TV script. 5. What advice do you have for our community? Learn now to love yourself and what you see in the mirror. The only validation you need comes from within. Oh! And then follow my new instagram because my other was deleted! @jdottley3 — and while you’re at it, TikTok is @theonlyjasond and I have a lot of LIVE’s geared towards mental health and personal issues, but my content is hella funny! 6. What is something no one knows about Jason Dottley? My truly lovely ex-boyfriend broke my dick in Spring of 2021. What an accomplishment, right? That ER visit was no fun. But urologist Dr. Mauricio Rios at Hospital Medasist was an angel. GO TO HIM. He gets the gay community. Take care of your sexual health, guys.

Live Shows Offer World Class Entertainment

Plus other fun adult things to do while visiting By Salvador Dominguez

For a city the size of Puerto Vallarta, you will probably never find so many options to see live performances. It’s an amazing place that attracts some world class performers. Puerto Vallarta is not only a destination where you can sunbathe in the sun and enjoy the sea, it also has a large number of incredible shows that will make your nights unforgettable. While it’s almost impossible to list all of those options here, we’ve picked a few live performances to highlight, some of our favorite venues to watch shows in, and, along with a few other fun things to do, including strip clubs and saunas! First, let’s get started with some “must see” shows.

What a Drag!

This is one of the most anticipated events of the high season in Puerto Vallarta. It has been taking place for eight consecutive years and year after year it accumulates more fans and more professionals in the arts are also joining to collaborate in this noble cause. This project has grown from just doing games and fashion shows to taking place atl ACT2PV, but has grown so much that the annual show has moved to the Teatro Vallarta Culture Center (Vallarta Theater), Uruguay 184, 5 de Diciembre. The show typically sells out the 900 seat venue. What a Drag is an event that raises funds for battered women from the Casa Esperanza Shelter. Women who have suffered from violence. The show consists of a drag contest with the peculiarity that the participants are heterosexual men who have never climbed on heels or made up makeup in their lives. Advised by professional hairdressers and makeup artists from Vallarta who generously donate their time and talent and manage to transform these gentlemen into all drag queens. Today there is a long waiting list of enthusiastic men who are willing to experience drag and walk in heels for a cause: to take a stand against violence against women. We hear that at the 2022 show, great singer Effie Passero, a 29-year-old singer/songwriter and cabaret performer, will be there. Effie’s influences range from Tori Amos to Elton John, and all the way to Pavarotti. What A Drag is a fun, professional event and above all with a great cause which we hope will continue to grow year after year. It is a unique event that will be presented on Sunday March 13, 2022 at the Vallarta Theater. To purchase your tickets visit their website: www.whatadragpv.com

Mayahuel Show

This show will transport you to the roots of Mexican culture. Particularly the roots of Jalisco. Mayahuel is a journey full of emotions and magic. It is the story of the goddess Mayahuel, the most beautiful star in the sky, who comes down to earth in love with Quetzalcoatl, the king of the Mexica and when she arrives here she is impressed by everything her eyes see 36

Garbo - Piano bar & Jazz Incanto

Puerto Vallarta is characterized by the diversity of its nightclubs and bars. Within this wide range of places, one has a special presence for its sophistication and unique styles, Incanto. It recently made its reopening (after it was severely damaged by flooding) and once again welcomed its frequent customers and offered, as always, the best live music show lineup. Incanto has an air-conditioned cabaret theater and a piano bar where you can dine in low light and in a bohemian and quiet atmosphere. The place specializes in bringing together different forms of art in one place, music, theater, comedy, and literary events. On Sundays they have an Open Mic, where you can take over the stage and show your talents, sing, dance or tell a story! Cheer up! Remember to try to book through their Facebook page. Its food menu is very varied and extensive by its Chef Jorge E. Hoil. They have delicious breakfasts if you feel like visiting early, we recommend the Eggs Benedict, a delicacy! For later and at night you can order the chicken breast served on a bed of spaghetti with creamy cheese sauce or something lighter like the avocado stuffed with chicken accompanies the dinner with a glass of wine. They also have salads and sandwiches.

A place to relax is definitely Garbo. Its bohemian essence makes it one of the few bars of this type in the romantic zone. In a relaxed atmosphere, it has a magnificent bar with a variety of margaritas or its mixology with premium mezcal. You can enjoy a little jazz outside the din of gay bars. The typical audience is usually 35 years or older, and frequented by North Americans residing in Mexico. Strip Clubs

If you’ve not been to a PV strip club, just know that it’s a bit different than an American strip club. Most strippers are working for tips only, and get commissions off the drinks they sell. They can be aggressive as this may be their only source of income. Be prepared for one of them to ask you to buy them a drink, and know that drinks from the strippers may be more expensive than if you go to the bar. There are four strip clubs in PV.

Wet Dreams

Wet Dreams is a lounge-style strip club with a large illuminated dance floor - that is mostly occupied by strippers. Its drink bar is limited and a bit expensive but you can find original drinks. They are known for, of course, their strip show, with handsome boys leaving nothing to the imagination. Keep in mind that it is a Strip Club, so try to be generous with the guys and leave good tips. The place is small and you will especially enjoy it if you go voyeurista. It can be a good pre-party before you get out of control. Address: Lázaro Cárdenas 312 Hours: 8.30pm- 3am Website: www.facebook.com/pvwetdreams

Anthropology

PV’s oldest and most established strip club, opening in 2000, Anthropology provides electronic music along with the Gogos that you can enjoy all night long. Just a little away from the streets of the gay district, this place invites you to uninhibit and perhaps indulge your most recurring fantasies. Its location at the beginning of one of the Cuale River Bridges, a bit far from the gay district, will make you feel more private and confident. The Gogos special show is at midnight so plan to be on time and don’t miss it! Here is also a good place to chat while you revel in watching the handsome strippers on the dance floor or the bar. Address: Morelos 101, Centro Hours: 10 pm- 3am Website: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063601512554

Club 69

69 Strip Club opened in 2018 and has a hip decor that is sure to catch your eye! It has two levels for performers -one is center stage and one directly above the bar higher up. It also has a second level seating area. Private rooms are located downstairs below the bar. Address: Lazaro cardenas 316 Hours: 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Website: www.facebook.com/mensonlyPV

Club-Sauna Spartacus

One of the most iconic gay venues in PV is the famous Spartacus, a large sauna and spa that has four floors. If you are determined to have a 360 experience, do not hesitate to visit their facilities. Spartacus has a large number of spaces where you can relax and have fun: steam, sauna, jacuzzi, private cabanas, outdoor pool, bar, terrace and free internet. The sauna has a terrace at the top, where sun lovers can bask and tan to the rhythm of music and beautiful naked bodies. Also there is a special area for smokers. If you arrive early, it will give you time to get to know the place and enjoy its facilities and then give way to interact with customers and have an incredible time. The cover is $200 pesos and in high season $300 pesos includes a locker, sandals and towel. They also have the service of cabins and massages for an extra cost. Address: Lázaro Cárdenas 240 Hours: 2 pm-3am Website: www.spaspartacus.com/prices-hours.html

Papi Chulo PV

Pervert is very much like what you’d expect a strip club to be, even with a pole in the center of the stage. . It’s located above a barber shop and just a few doors down from Wet Dreams and Sixty Nine.

Papi Chulo is the new little brother of Club Spartacus, adding a new option closer to the gay beach area. Check out their social media for more information on hours and services, as it was just opening when O&APV was going to press.

2022 NIGHTLIFE

Adan Carano Dances With the Waves By Salvador Dominguez

Adan Carano is a brilliant artist who combines his love of the Hula-Hoop with his nimble surfing skills, bringing together elements which have become vital in Adan’s life. In the LGBTQ + community, almost everyone has a coming out story. Those stories are littered with good and bad consequences, have brought families together or torn them apart. But one constant in all of those stories is that when a person decides to come out, that step changes everything in their life.

Photos by @Theheartbeatofthewave @Jenn_farmer_photography

And that’s what happened to Adan. His sexual orientation forced him to move away from his home state, Aguascalientes, and his family. They were not ready to understand it, nor he to explain it. At 16, he decided to leave his home and environment - a place that left him depressed and without a clear picture of his own identity. And so, he set out on his own. As he traveled, he met a group of friends who were street performers, traveling to different cities in Mexico, and they invited him to join them. On the road across the Mexican Republic, he went to places like Huasteca Potosina, Leon, Queretaro and Toluca, he honed his skills as a street artist, performing amazing hula hoop routines that left people amazed. But as he arrived in Sayulita, Nayarit, it was a destination that —without knowing it— would change his life. His friends left without warning, leaving him without anything - not even a cellphone. With few options, he decided to camp on the beach for a month. As time passed he found a safe place working in a hostel, and a new friend began to teach him how to surf. 42

N i g h t l i fe

“My surfing adventure began at La Lancha Beach,” he explained. “This is a paradise near Sayulita, and is a great area for beginner surfers.” Sayulita was just the beginning of his relationship with surfing. After mastering the waves with his board he decided to be on the move again. His next stop was the old continent: Galicia, in the north of Spain, where, through volunteer work, he was able to arrive and settle as he continued practicing Surf, in another country, with another climate and other waves. “But I didn’t find that the climate allowed me to surf as I wanted,” he said. “So I grabbed my backpack and headed to the Canary Islands. There, in Tenerife, I found the balance between Mexican and rocky European beaches.” The beaches of Tenerife provided the perfect combination for him to practice circus art and extreme sport. At first, Adan did not believe that he would be able to perform such madness, but, when he jumped on the surfboard to make the first turn with the Hula Hoop, he did it on the first try, marrying his two passions. 2022 NIGHTLIFE “The surf community has received me quite well,” Adan told O&APV. “Despite the fact surf is a sport mostly practiced by heterosexual men, I have never had any qualms showing myself as I am, feeling proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ community, sharing interests for sports.”

beside partying. Cultural, artistic and sportive activities are things he’d like to participate more in.

Adan believes there are three levels in life: Mind, Body, and Spirit.

With that in mind, he’s starting to perform with other artists, and friends who have invited him to collaborate. He’s constantly looking for ways to learn new techniques in surfing and Hula Hooping.”

“Surfing makes you combine and coordinate the three, to reach balance,” he said. “For me, the most important thing is passion - that’s what you have to have to move every day. As Adan came out, his previous experiences made him shy away from the “gay scene”, and he wasn’t much into partying. “But that helped me to find myself,” he explained. “Being rejected after I came out of the closet did not help me feel confident or comfortable to be near the gay scene. But I wanted to add that the experience and surfing have served as motivation for me to work on self-acceptance.” Now, he’s ready and enjoying our LGBTQ + community. He has plans to open a Queer Community of Surfers in Puerto Vallarta in the future! So exciting for those who enjoy extreme sports. He firmly believes the gay community need more activities,

“And I’m always looking to learn something new,” he said. “I am not happy unless I’m pushing myself to new boundaries.”

“I am very happy because it is another way of connecting with me, art, my way of connecting is with the sea, I respect it, I take care of it, as I want them to do it with me,” he said. What’s in the future? Adan has his goals set high. “You set your goals high and why not,” he remarked. “Even Cirque du Soleil could be in my future.” If you’d like to see Adan performing his Hula Hooping, you can find him as part of the Karma Chameleon Show, on Wednesdays and Sundays, 9 p.m. at ACT2PV. And if you take a walk around Sayulita, you’ll surely see his pink Hula Hoop dancing in the waves, holding hands with his partner, Mr. Surf.

2022 Home 2021 NIGHTLIFE Guide Puerto Vallarta is a city that comes alive at night. The sun has set, and slowly you’ll see the street taqueria (taco) stands slowly open up, and fire up their grills. Most stands are open till very early the next morning, and so, after a night of bar hopping, or after a trip to see a live show at one of the local theaters, nothing hits the spot like a taco. And why not! You’ll find taco stands on just about every corner in Zona Romantica and wow, are they ever affordable. You can expect to spend $30 to $40 pesos on a meat taco (about $1.50 USD) and $45 to $50 pesos on a fish taco (just over $2.00 USD). Many of the stands have been operated for generations, with recipes handed down to preserve the same taste that has been enjoyed for years. But finding some of the best tacos takes work - and Vallarta Food Tours has done that work for you! Over the years they’ve worked to find the best taco stands, which you’ll see as part of their “Street Taco Tour”. “ We have crafted this tour so that you can watch the streets of Vallarta come alive on this evening taco adventure tour,” explained Paul Mayer with Vallarta Food Tours. “Come grab the best street tacos with us and enjoy specialty regional dishes as we share Vallarta’s vibrant history and culture.” Mayer said the tour consists of seven (7) delicious food tastings and a Raicilla tasting, and costs $49 per person.

Late Night Taco Craving? Street Taco Tour Can Help Find the Perfect Spot By Jerry Jones

N i g h t l i fe

Tours are held everyday, starting at 6 p.m, and they last about three (3) hours. Remember, you’ll visit seven places, so that’s seven or more tacos! Go hungry! We recommend taking this tour at the beginning of your stay in Puerto Vallarta, so you’ll have the insider knowledge of the best spots for the rest of your trip. Private group tours can easily be arranged. An average of six to eight people are on each tour. The tour begins at Mariscos El Güero, located on Francisco I. Madero 291. Be sure to wear your walking shoes, as you’ll be walking more than a mile or so to visit all of the stands.

Winter 2022

2022 NIGHTLIFE “Vallarta Food Tours mission is to help visitors and residents alike enjoy the best that Vallarta has to offer by highlighting off-the-beaten-path, “non-touristy” food and drinks along with a local insight of its treasures,” Mayer said. “Our love of Puerto Vallarta and Mexican culture inspired us to create the city’s finest culinary tour. We sampled the perfect mole, sipped on succulent tuba water, and much more.” Vallarta Food Tours offer seven other tours including a downtown food tour that was awarded #5 in the world by Trip Advisor in 2019 and #4 in 2020, Mexology - Tacos and tequila , Bikes and Bites- Tour de taco, Pitillal tour, Vallarta by Road, Seafood Lovers tour, and Discover Versalles food tour. While on the tour, remember the key to having a good taco isn’t just the filling - of course that’s important - but the real “secret” ingredient will always be the toppings and sauces. Look for a variety of salsas and toppings to put on your taco. Don’t be shy or afraid to try something new. But if spicy is not your thing, be sure to ask your food guide which salsas are not spicy.

For more information, visit Vallarta Food Tours on social media or their website. www.www.facebook.com/vallartafoodtours www.vallartafoodtours.com

And you’ll likely come across other great food items while walking around Zona Romantica. Street vendors make other things besides tacos. You’ll find quesadillas, elote, churros, taquitos, vampiros, baked potatoes, ceviche, and camotes (sweet potatoes). Be sure to take pesos to tip your food guide. If you enjoyed their tour, the standard gratuity is 15% to 20% of the retail price of the tour ($8 – $11 USD or $144 – $198 MXN per guest).

Queens, Queens, Everywhere!

Multicultural Drag Queens Make Vallarta Their Home By Salvador Dominguez

Thanks in part to the popularity of RuPaul Drag’s Race, the art of drag has become exponentially popular throughout the world, and Mexico is no exception. Of course, a magical place like Puerto Vallarta could not be left behind, and today it offers some of the best drag shows in the country. The city offers an amazing variety of great drag shows - so many in fact, that it would be almost impossible to see all of them in one visit. Let’s do some history. The origin of the word “drag” dates back to Elizabethan times, as this is how men who acted as women were called. During that time, in England, women could not participate in the theater, so all female roles were also performed by men. A tradition of genre personification then emerged, as can be seen in The Merchant of Venice and Twelfth Night. However, it was not until 1930 that the term was linked to the LGBTQ + community in the United States, especially during the prohibition of alcohol. Drag, then, becomes a safe space for the community, where they can freely express their sexuality within a heteronormed society. Nowadays, not only people in the community can drag, but also trans and cis people who are curious and above all the creativity to exercise this difficult art. O&APV presents to you our selection of the Top Drag Queens of Puerto Vallarta that are making an impact on the community and providing great entertainment.

Mama Tits

Naya Quetzal This queen is full of energy, originality and sympathy. Naya Quetzal has risen like wildfire this past year. She has performed in the strongest venues of PV’s drag show. Naya is a baby drag queen, since she has not been a performer for long. However, her charisma has made her quickly place herself in the public’s eye, with fans looking for where her next performances will be. Naya’s show is eclectic - you can see her perfectly doing a Queen B song and then performing one by Lila Downs incredibly. The hallmark of her persona is a beard that she wears well and that makes this magical character stand out more as she sings in the late nights of Vallarta. Her show is a must that you should not miss.

A great artist full of charisma, talent and humor is Mama Tits. From the age of 16 he started dragging “just for fun” and later turned pro in Seattle. His drag went through many stages and even names, but for 12 years Mama Tits has always been around. His drag is not only an entertainment show, she always seeks to send a message to the LGBTQ + community of support for each other. That is why he firmly believes that drag cannot be defined with a single definition, “Drag is drag, it is unique, drag is culture, drag is art.” Admiring all the growing Mexican drag scene currently in Puerto Vallarta, she said “the expression of your own culture through the art of drag is crazy and I love it, particularly here in Mexico.” As Mama Tits, she is an accomplished storyteller who uses the stories from her life to inspire audiences everywhere. That talent, coupled with her passion and matching vocal skill set, is sure to delight and inspire you. Mama Tits weaves poignant live voices into her stories, along with incredible comedic drama, creating a great show of joy, with a strong message of love.

Here are the places she is performing: Paco’s Ranch - Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. La Noche - Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays Hambúrguer Mary’s - Friday Chachalaca Bar - Saturdays

Each Mama show is an experience, they do not resemble each other. Always inspired by her own life, telling great and funny stories, one of the great pluses of Mama is that her live singing is excellent. It is a delight to see her on stage accompanied by Mexican musicians. You can find her doing season on ACT2PV with two amazing shows until May 2022: “Confessions of a Ho!” Comedy cabaret with a twisted version of life, laughter, love and sex, on Saturdays 9.30 p.m. and the second show is “Mama Tits and the Underwires”, a live band show, Mama’s Rockshow! Police Commissioner Responds to Concerns Over Police Extortion WhatsApp Line Established to Report Harassment, Victims Urged to Report Cases By Salvador Dominguez and Jerry Jones

(Editor’s note: You can read an extended version of this story with additional interviews and more information at www.outandaboutpv.com)

complaints to internal affairs through the Honor and Justice Commission.

After an outcry on social media over police extortion of nationals and tourists, Puerto Vallarta Police officials urge those affected to report any LGBTQ+ harassment, including police insisting on being given money. Additionally, police said they were meeting with some local LGBTQ+ leaders to discuss the situation.

“On the part of the Vallarta Police, we are not allowing any type of abuse of this nature, unfortunately the foreign tourist who has been affected does not report it, probably out of fear, ‘’ he said. “They then return to their place of origin and from there he makes it public in social media. In those cases it does not allow us to have a basis or complaint from those affected to be able to open an investigation.”

It’s not a new issue in Puerto Vallarta and has been reported on before. In November 2018, O&APV reported on a community meeting that was held to address similar concerns. That meeting was held at the request of the Colectivo Vallarta LGBT group, with specific concerns of an increase in LGBT couples’ harassment. But new leadership may help change previous police practices. In October 2021 a new government took control in Puerto Vallarta. O&APV reached out to Profe Luis Michel’s office (Michel is the Presidente Municipal de Puerto Vallarta) and spoke to Police Commissioner Luis Fernando Muñoz Ortega, Director of Citizen Security, Policia Municipal Puerto Vallarta. Commissioner Muñoz was appointed as the new police commissioner in Oct. 2021. The police commissioner said that officials had not had any recent registered complaints, and needed those affected by such acts to file a complaint so that an investigation could take place. Nationals or foregin tourists are urged to make this report in person at the Security Police Station, on their website, or through a QR code that was created for this type of situation. The QR code opens up a chat on WhatsApp to report the cases. The WhatsApp account is labeled, Comisaría de Seguridad Ciudadana Puerto Vallarta Jalisco, and you are urged to add it to your contact list in case it’s needed. Commissioner Muñoz said that the actions carried out when a robbery involves a member of the police is to channel those 54

N i g h t l i fe

The cases reported on social media all have a similar theme they were intercepted by Vallarta police patrols asking them what they were doing at that time on the street, and then began to inspect them wanting to verify if they were carrying drugs or were intoxicated. After finding nothing from them, they demand a certain amount of money or else they will arrest them, using their authority to extort tourists. The recommendations made by the Vallarta Police Station when one of these events occurs is to immediately file a complaint, through the Police Station in person or on the website; the QR Code, or dial 911 or 089 - all these reports are anonymous and the most important thing is that they are made when the events occur and before leaving Vallarta. Be prepared to report the date, place and time of the event and, as far as possible, the name and characteristics that identify the police units or individuals involved.
