The reception from last month’s cover story, The Spectacular Rise and Fall of Peter Deep and Club Manána, and the conversations it prompted locally once it hit the newsstands, illustrated both the long memory of some evergreen residents, and also the collective short memory for businesses in a city that demarcate the passage of time by way of numbered annual “seasons.”

We’re diving back into the local history again this month with a conversation at Bar Frida with owner Tom Finley, who fell ill a while back. “Last year I only spent six months here,” he told me, from his perch at the front corner of the bar near the window, “and I spent six months in the hospital.” He’s looking good now and didn’t hesitate to share from memories that span nearly two decades in this community.

Connor shared the origin story for the annual festival, and also gave us a sneak peek at what we can expect from Los Muertos Brewing next year as the business continues to expand.

onocido como el Dr. Edgar por sus pacientes y amigos, Edgar Hernández es un médico cirujano en práctica privada aquí en Vallarta. Una verdadera pata salada, la joven de 31 años es graduada de la Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit. No creo que tengamos secretos, Puerto Vallarta es un paraíso desde sus playas hasta las montañas, la gente es muy cálida y servicial. Tenemos todo para todos los presupuestos y gustos. ¿Cuál es su cóctel favorito?

Cielo Rojo. Me gusta mucho el sabor del clamato preparado con cerveza clara. Sencillo, pero requiere del toque y el sazón. ¿Tiene algún tipo de placeres culposos?

Amo el chocolate =) en todas sus formas y variantes; un orgasmo al paladar. ¿Cómo se llamaría tu autobiograf ía?

“El preludio del éxito”. Mi vida ha sido una montaña rusa, al final del día con nuevas cosas que aprender, pero siempre feliz y siempre triunfante, muy a pesar de todo. ¿Qué has buscado en Google recientemente?

Casualmente infograf ía que explique de forma breve y concisa acerca del PrEP (profilaxis pre exposición para personas vih-negativas con factores de riesgo)

Sin lugar a dudas, Evelia (mi madre). Es mi ejemplo de coraje y valentía, trabajadora y sensible, carácter fuerte, decidida, mujer con visión. Me ha enseñado a ser honrado y trabajar duro para lograr mis sueños pero sobre todo a creer en mí. ¿Cuál es la lección más dif ícil que has aprendido?

Que tenemos que aprender a vivir con el dolor de la pérdida un ser querido… que el dolor es igual todos los días. Que hay que disfrutar cada día como si fuera el último. Que la vida es demasiado corta para guardar rencor, para dormir molesto, para tener miedo, para no arriesgarte, para guardar un beso o un te amo o para no enamorarte. Aprendí a vivir libremente y aún así compartirlo.

nown as Dr. Edgar to patients and friends, Edgar Hernández is a medical surgeon in private practice here in Vallarta. A true pata salada, the 31-year-old is a graduate from Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit. In addition, he has earned a diploma in clinical sexuality as well as managerial coaching and skills development. He has been a member of the Comités Municipales de Salud en Puerto Vallarta and currently is a member of the SETAC board of directors. Dr. Edgar is available for in-home medical consultations, subject to availability.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like and enjoy driving on the road, going to the beach (Sayulita and Litibú), but also going to the mountains (San Sebastián or Mascota). I like to spend time with my friends. I like reading, listening to music, watching Netflix, enjoying a cigar and a glass of wine. I like to look at the rain through the window and breathe the smell of wet earth.

If you could share a secret about Puerto Vallarta, what would it be?

I don't think we have secrets, Puerto Vallarta is a paradise from its beaches to the mountains, the people are very warm and helpful. We have everything for all budgets and tastes.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Red Sky. I like very much the flavor of the clamato prepared with clear beer. Simple, but it requires a touch and seasoning.

When people come to you for help, what do they usually want help with?

I'm a doctor; they're mainly looking for me to cure them of some disease or to get them out of any doubt about their health. Although I'm also a good friend, I'm good at listening and giving advice.

Who inspires you to be better?

Without a doubt, Evelia (my mother). She is my example of courage and bravery, hardworking and sensitive, strong character, determined, woman with vision. She has taught me to be honest and work hard to achieve my dreams but above all to believe in myself.

What is the most difficult lesson you have learned?

That we have to learn to live with the pain of losing a loved one... that pain is the same every day. That each day should be enjoyed as if it were the last. That life is too short to hold a grudge, to sleep upset, to be afraid, not to take risks, to keep a kiss or a I love you or not to fall in love. I learned to live freely and still share it.

Do you have any kind of guilty pleasures?

I love chocolate =) in all its forms and variants; an orgasm on the palate.

What would your autobiography be called?

"The Prelude to Success." My life has been a roller coaster, at the end of the day with new things to learn, but always happy and always triumphant, despite everything.

What have you looked for in Google recently?

Casually infographics that explain briefly and concisely about PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV-negative people with risk factors).

What is your secret talent?

My empathy and nobility. I am a very sensitive person, loyal, hardworking and dedicated to what I believe and what I think. I like to help whenever I can.

What always encourages you when you think about it?

That "feeling" you get every time you reach a goal. It's just the best.

If you didn't have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

Definitely work and travel. Why work? Because my work in my life is my passion. Being a doctor is the most satisfying thing in the world.

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren't a problem?

I would travel all over the world.

LOS MUERTOS BREWING turned an anniversary party into an annual signature event

uerto Vallarta will not be short on activities for participants or spectators as the Festival de Dia de los Muertos takes over the city with entertainment for all ages.

Some revelers will dress up for the Art Vallarta/Amapas Neighborhood Association Block Party on October 31st. Halloween also brings Opening Nights at both Act II Entertainment Stages (with Little Shop of Horrors) and Incanto (Naked Boys Singing). Options abound that day, including exhibits at the Cultural Center on Rio Cuale Island and at City Hall. (Be aware that November 1st is a National Holiday so banks and government offices will be closed). Or join the parade from the cemetery in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, down the cobblestoned streets to the Malecon and into town.

A growing local custom on the first Saturday of November is the “Fiesta en la Calle” located at the cross streets by Los Muertos Brewing (Lazaro Cardenas 302). With this event increasing in popularity, Out & About PV decided to find out what the impetus was for the musical extravaganza. I sat down with owner Conner Watts at the brewpub in early September to ask about the festival, his beer, and of course, his pizza.

More than just an affable beer geek, Watts is admired for his dedication to the community and has been praised by other local businesses for the research he did prior to opening his establishment.

Like many of us, Conner and his wife Stephanie were looking for a warmer climate to hang their hats. Moving from the United States, they spent a year settling in to Vallarta before they developed the plan to open a restaurant—and another year of construction passed before it came to fruition.

Watts owned a restaurant in Park City that was more of a bar that happened to feature New York-style pizza. His challenge in Vallarta was to figure out how to make a pizza that was as good—if not better—

than what he had made before, with local ingredients. Flour, water and yeast may seem like a simple combination but, for a pizza aficionado, finding the right combination presented a challenge, especially in a climate where the humidity can affect the dough-making process. For many locals, Watts has seemingly perfected the recipe, as his pies are consistently considered to be among the town’s best.

The hole in the market they were trying to fill also involved craft beer. Watts began home brewing as a hobby when he was eighteen years old at the University of Colorado. With a lack of artisanal beer here, and the universal appeal of the beer/pizza combination, he and his wife hoped to literally thirst the quench of those looking for something beyond the local cervezas.

Opening up their brewery was not without its challenges. Watts confides “when we first started, we had some growing pains in our brew house. It was a little bit hard to control our fermentation temperatures, which is extremely critical to making good beer.” Adding to his frustrations were issues with CFE (the local electric company) that took time to resolve, though by the end of their first high season, Los Muertos had already begun to develop a loyal following.

Expecting the tourist market to try a “local” brew, as is the custom with many beer enthusiasts from Canada and the United States, Watts was surprised that many of their first fans came from the Mexican clientele. Interesting still was the popularity of Latin American tourists that began to patronize the bar. Argentinians, Watts admits, seem to be an especially notable group to imbibe his creations.

This unique mix of clientele affected their product mix, as the brewery shifted its focus to its stout beer, among others. He clarifies the misconceptions that some “North of the Border” people have: “A lot of people may think they’re going to drink a stout when they’re huddled up next to the fire, eating a shepherd’s pie or something like that. And in a tropical, super hot, humid climate, it doesn’t even cross their radar as something that they want to try. Mexicans in particular haven’t been OCTOBER 2018

trained that way. They taste us out. And they’re like, oh, it tastes like coffee. It tastes like chocolate. It’s got a different texture. They gravitate away from the bitter beers and focus on the super dark beers, which I never imagined would be the case. Many of my Mexican customers now drink bitter beers, but they generally don’t start out that way.”

His popularity with the locals may have as much to do with his involvement in the community as with his beer. Beyond sponsoring a softball team, Watts has been instrumental in adding to the festivities of Dia de los Muertos with his annual “Fiesta en la Calle.” This popular street party evolved from what was originally a celebration of making it through their (challenging) first year.

As Watts reveals, “Our first anniversary was how this all started. It was November 2nd. That year it was a Saturday. So we closed down the street in front of our place and invited some bands. And it was a really great street party. And it was so successful that we continued the next year when the 2nd of November was on a Sunday. And the following year, when the 2nd fell on a Monday, we decided that we should keep it on the weekend, so now we celebrate our anniversary and our portion of Dia de los Muertos celebrations on the first Saturday of November every year, which would make this year’s on November 3rd.” This actually works out better for some people who have prior commitments to celebrate on the Friday night, when the majority of events will take place.

When asked what we can look forward to, Watts excitedly shares how they will be closing the streets by their downtown location

(Constitucion and Lazaro Cardenas), with a DJ and live bands playing from early afternoon until the Mariachis finish around 11 p.m. The event is free to all, with the day’s proceeds going to a local charity.

As an official city event, the “Fiesta en la Calle” is included in all of the promotion for Dia de los Muertos events and municipal workers provide assistance to close the street and patrol the area.

I ask what his favorite part of the event is and I am treated to the history of how it all began. “I met my wife because I booked the bands in a bar,” Watts confides.

“And she was a singer in a band called Funk Schwa. And her band was local to Salt Lake City and my bar was in Park City, Utah, and so they played at least once a month (for us) and had great gigs. I really enjoyed their music. And when we moved to Mexico, they lost their vocalist.

And concurrently with our move, their trombone player also moved away to Oregon. So the band ceased to exist. And when I had the idea of getting the band back together to play for the first “Fiesta en la Calle”, it worked! And we got six of the seven former band members down here.

And I had so much fun—and they had so much fun—that this will be their sixth year coming down.”

Other local musicians from Vallarta add to the community spirit of the event—including Roxy’s House Band and Nacho Daddy’s Texas Embassy Blues Band and several other Canadian and American musician and vocalists. And the aforementioned Mariachi band

to close the festivities. I commend him on his inclusivity and he divulges that it was a cornerstone for starting their business down here. “We opened with the idea of inclusiveness towards everybody, whether that’s religion, skin color, sexual orientation—we are here for everybody.”

By the time they’ve recovered from their anniversary, high season will be upon us. When asked what we can expect from Los Muertos in the near future, Watts divulges that due to having reached capacity at their current brew house, a new project is in the works down the street from their current location to enable more brewing, cold storage and distribution capacity. It will eventually serve food that pairs well with beer, but not pizza obviously, due to its geographical proximity. It will not be up and running until later next summer, but when it does, their current brew house will be able to offer even more seasonal, experimental beers, fulfilling Watts’ curiosity and diverse palate.

His enthusiasm for beer is evident throughout our conversation and I ask if his brewmaster talents ever feel overshadowed by the popularity of his pizza. “I had an expectation to be known for my beer but we’re much better known as a pizza place than a beer place.

They’re both my creations so I take pride in them both.”

Una costumbre local cada vez más extendida el primer sábado de noviembre es la "Fiesta en la Calle", que se celebra en el cruce de las calles de Los Muertos Brewing (Lázaro Cárdenas 302). Con el aumento de la popularidad de este evento, Out & About PV decidió averiguar cuál era el ímpetu de la extravagancia musical. Me senté con el dueño Conner Watts en el pub de cerveza a principios de septiembre para preguntarle sobre el festival, su cerveza y, por supuesto, su pizza.

Más que un friki de la cerveza, Watts es admirado por su dedicación a la comunidad y ha sido elogiado por otras empresas locales

por la investigación que realizó antes de abrir su establecimiento. Como muchos de nosotros, Conner y su esposa Stephanie buscaban un clima más cálido para colgar sus sombreros. Al mudarse de los Estados Unidos, pasaron un año estableciéndose en Vallarta antes de desarrollar el plan para abrir un restaurante, y otro año de construcción pasó antes de que se abriera.

Watts tenía un restaurante en Park City que era más bien un bar con pizza estilo Nueva York. Su reto en Vallarta fue averiguar cómo hacer una pizza que fuera tan buena -si no mejor- que la que había hecho antes, con ingredientes locales. La harina, el agua y la levadura pueden parecer una combinación simple pero, para un aficionado a la pizza, encontrar la combinación correcta era un reto, especialmente en un clima donde la humedad puede afectar el proceso de elaboración de la masa. Para muchos lugareños, Watts parece haber perfeccionado la receta, ya que sus pizzas son considerados consistentemente entre los mejores de la ciudad.

El agujero en el mercado que estaban tratando de llenar también incluía la cerveza artesanal. Watts comenzó a fabricar cerveza casera como pasatiempo cuando tenía dieciocho años en la Universidad de Colorado.

Con la falta de cerveza artesanal y el atractivo universal de la combinación de cerveza y pizza, él y su esposa esperaban literalmente saciar la sed de aquellos que buscaban algo más allá de las cervezas locales.

La apertura de su cervecería no estuvo exenta de desaf íos. Watts nos cuenta que "cuando empezamos, teníamos algunos dolores de crecimiento en nuestra fábrica de cerveza. Fue un poco dif ícil controlar nuestras temperaturas de fermentación, lo que es extremadamente crítico para hacer una buena cerveza". A su frustración se sumaron los problemas con CFE que tardaron en resolverse, aunque al final de su primera temporada, Los Muertos ya había comenzado a desarrollar un aficionados leal.

Esperando que el mercado turístico pruebe una cerveza "local", como es costumbre entre muchos entusiastas de la cerveza de Canadá y Estados Unidos, Watts se sorprendió de que muchos de sus primeros fans fueran de la clientela mexicana. Interesante aún fue la popularidad de los turistas latinoamericanos que comenzaron a frecuentar el bar. Los argentinos, admite Watts, parecen ser un grupo especialmente notable para imbuir sus creaciones.

Esta mezcla única de clientela afectó su mezcla de productos, ya que la cervecería cambió su enfoque a su cerveza fuerte, entre otras cosas. Aclara los conceptos erróneos que tienen algunas personas del "norte de la frontera": "Mucha gente puede pensar que va a beber una cerveza negra cuando se acurrucan junto al fuego, comiendo un pastel de carne o algo así. Y en un clima tropical, súper caliente y húmedo, ni siquiera atraviesa su radar como algo que quieren probar. Los mexicanos en particular no han sido entrenados de esa manera. Nos prueban. Y son como, oh, sabe a café. Sabe a chocolate. Tiene una textura diferente. Se alejan de las cervezas amargas y se concentran en las cervezas súper oscuras, lo que nunca imaginé que sería el caso.

Su popularidad entre los locales puede tener tanto que ver con su participación en la comunidad como con su cerveza. Además de patrocinar un equipo de softball, Watts ha sido instrumental en añadir a las festividades del Día de los Muertos con su "Fiesta en la Calle" anual. Esta popular fiesta callejera se desarrolló a partir de lo que originalmente fue una celebración de su primer año (desafiante).

Como revela Watts, "Nuestro primer aniversario fue el comienzo de todo esto. Fue el 2 de noviembre.

Ese año era sábado. Así que cerramos la calle frente a nuestra restaurante e invitamos a algunas bandas. Y fue una gran fiesta callejera. Y fue tan exitoso que continuamos el año siguiente cuando el 2 de noviembre fue un domingo. Y al año siguiente, cuando el día 2 cayó un lunes, decidimos que lo mantuviéramos el fin de semana, así que ahora celebramos nuestro aniversario y nuestra parte de las celebraciones del Día de los Muertos el primer sábado de noviembre de cada año, lo que haría que este año fuera el 3 de noviembre". Esto realmente funciona mejor para algunas personas que tienen compromisos previos para celebrar el viernes por la noche, cuando la mayoría de los eventos se llevarán a cabo.

Cuando se nos pregunta qué podemos esperar, Watts comparte entusiasmado cómo cerrarán las calles con su ubicación en el centro de la ciudad (Constitución y Lázaro Cárdenas), con un DJ y bandas en vivo que tocarán desde la primera hora de la tarde hasta que los mariachis terminen alrededor de las 11 p.m. El evento es gratis para todos, y las ganancias del día se destinarán a una organización benéfica local.

Como evento oficial de la ciudad, la "Fiesta en la Calle" está incluida en toda la promoción de los eventos del Día de los Muertos y los trabajadores municipales prestan asistencia para cerrar la calle y patrullar la zona.

Pregunto cuál es su parte favorita del evento y me invitan a la historia de cómo comenzó todo. "Conocí a mi esposa porque reservé las bandas en un bar", confiesa Watts.

"Y era cantante en una banda llamada Funk Schwa. Y su banda era local en Salt Lake City y mi bar estaba en Park City, Utah,

evento, incluyendo Roxy's House Band y Nacho Daddy's Texas Embassy Blues Band y varios otros músicos y vocalistas canadienses y estadounidenses. Y la ya mencionada banda de mariachis para cerrar las festividades. Lo elogio por su inclusividad y divulga que fue la piedra angular para comenzar su negocio aquí abajo. "Abrimos con la idea de inclusión hacia todos, ya sea la religión, el color de la piel, la orientación sexual, estamos aquí para todos".

Para cuando se hayan recuperado de su aniversario, la temporada alta estará sobre nosotros. Cuando se nos pregunta qué podemos esperar de Los Muertos en un futuro cercano, Watts divulga que debido a que ha alcanzado su capacidad en su actual sala de cocción, un nuevo proyecto se encuentra en la planta que se encuentra al final de la calle de su ubicación actual para permitir una mayor capacidad de producción, almacenamiento en frío y distribución de cerveza.

Eventualmente, servirá alimentos que combinan bien con la cerveza, pero no con la pizza, obviamente, debido a su proximidad geográfica.

No estará en funcionamiento hasta finales del próximo verano, pero cuando lo haga, su actual cervecería podrá ofrecer aún más cervezas experimentales de temporada, satisfaciendo la curiosidad y la diversidad de paladares de Watts.

Su entusiasmo por la cerveza es evidente a lo largo de nuestra conversación y le pregunto si su talento como maestro cervecero se siente alguna vez eclipsado por la popularidad de su pizza. "Tenía la expectativa de ser conocido por mi cerveza, pero somos mucho más conocidos como una pizzería que como una cervecería. Ambas son mis creaciones, así que me enorgullezco de ambas".

Realmente disfruté de su música. Y cuando nos mudamos a México, perdieron a su vocalista. Y al mismo tiempo que nosotros, su trombonista también se mudó a Oregón.

Así que la banda dejó de existir. Y cuando tuve la idea de reunir a la banda para tocar en la primera "Fiesta en la Calle", ¡funcionó!

Y tenemos a seis de los siete miembros de la banda aquí abajo. Y me divertí tanto, y ellos también, que este será su sexto año".

TOM Y LUIS repasan dos décadas de vida

A

Tom Finley no le importa si usted disputa cualquier parte de su recuerdo del gay Vallarta de antaño.

"Otras personas van a cuestionar lo que yo les digo", dijo, a mitad de una buena cantidad de tragos de tequila una noche en su taberna de 18 años, Bar Frida. "Claro, por supuesto que lo son. Pero creo que soy probablemente el único que ha estado aquí durante 25 años, así que pueden cuestionar lo que digo, pero puede que les cueste trabajo autentificar lo que están tratando de corregir".

Me interesaba saber más sobre la historia gay de esta ciudad y el nombre de Tom aparecía con frecuencia. Me invitó a unirme a él en el Bar Frida para que pudiera recordar.

Lo conocí por su ubicación en el bar donde todos los días tiene la cancha: justo al otro lado de la puerta, es el que está al final de la larga mesa, inmediatamente a la izquierda. En el extremo opuesto de esa mesa se sienta Luis, su compañero de 16 años, y esa noche, entre los dos, me senté con Mike Laking, un canadiense que ha vivido en Vallarta los últimos tres años.

El propietario del establecimiento gay posiblemente más antiguo de la ciudad se enfrenta a un par de hitos importantes. Bar Frida está a sólo dos años de su vigésimo aniversario -ya ha logrado esa distinción, si se tienen en cuenta los dos años de su existencia antes de que asumiera el control en 2001- y el próximo mes de febrero celebrará su 75º cumpleaños. Un inmigrante canadiense, Tom ha vivido aquí a tiempo completo desde 1998.

Todo comenzó, como para mucha gente, con unas vacaciones en Puerto Vallarta y una visita al bar original de Paco Paco. "Solía pasar el rato allí para la hora feliz", dijo. "Todo el mundo fue a la playa y se bronceó y quemó, se emborrachó con tequila o lo que sea, y luego pasamos al segundo acto en Paco's. Todos íbamos allí y pasábamos el rato. Era un gran lugar".

Pero a su llegada permanente, su segundo intento de retiro, Tom pasó un par de años descansando en la playa y en los bares antes de que la idea de dirigir un establecimiento como el Bar Frida tomara el control. "Cuando llegué aquí, después de dos años de estar tirado en la playa, me di cuenta de que la vida no estaba preparado para ella", dijo. "Como todo el mundo bebía demasiado, pasabas demasiado tiempo en la playa, tumbado y persiguiendo

a los chicos por la playa. Así que después de un par de años decidí que simplemente no funcionaba y luego encontré a Bar Frida".

Antes de su reubicación hace ocho años, el bar estaba ubicado donde hoy se encuentra el Reinas Bar. Está a sólo una cuadra y, según Tom, toda la zona en ese momento no era tan bienvenida para los canadienses, estadounidenses o gays. "Paco's estaba al otro lado de la ciudad", dijo, delineando el significado de los dos bloques que separaban las dos localidades. "El mío fue el primero en lo que se consideraba 100% heterosexual, un barrio mexicano. Todo el mundo decía:'¡¿Eres estúpido?! ¡¿Has perdido la cabeza?!"

"Conocía este territorio", añadió, "porque era una verdadera ramera. Solía pasar el rato en Paco's pero vivía en este barrio, a la vuelta de la esquina, y conocía a toda la gente local porque había cantinas en cada cuadra, y eran cantinas mexicanas anticuadas. Eran un grupo de vaqueros salvajes. Pero eran buena gente".

Luis Méndez, socio de Tom desde hace mucho tiempo, se unió a la conversación en este momento. "La escena gay era diferente entonces", dijo. "En ese entonces uno conocía a jóvenes mexicanos que querían irse a casa con uno, sólo porque querían irse a casa con uno.

No había dinero de por medio, como ahora". "¡Te compraron una cerveza!" Tom dijo.

"Cada vez que comprabas una cerveza, ellos también se daban la vuelta y compraban una cerveza. Te sentabas con esos vaqueros de las montañas, y si les gustabas, sólo por hablar contigo, te emborrachabas porque te seguían mandando una cerveza. Y si querías acostarte con ellos, bien. Si no lo hiciste, no hubo preguntas. No hay dinero de por medio.

Eran sólo chicos pasando el rato juntos, divirtiéndose. No eran negocios. Sólo fue divertido. Y todo eso ha cambiado. Ahora es una ciudad de dinero".

Desde el mes pasado, Tom y Luis han estado juntos dieciséis años. Originario de Mérida, Luis descubrió Vallarta, y Tom, como uno de esos "jóvenes mexicanos" a los que se refería. Como endoscopista, primero viajó a esta ciudad para una convención profesional y coordinó una reunión con Tom antes de su llegada.

"Sabía que iba a venir aquí durante una semana, así que me conecté", dijo. "No había teléfonos celulares en ese entonces, ni Grindr, ni Manhunt, ni nada por el estilo. Era el año 2002. Pero había un lugar, un sitio, una cosa en línea llamada date.com y sólo había tres o cuatro

Le envié un mensaje diciendo:'Voy a estar en Puerto Vallarta, tal y cual, por una semana, bla, bla, bla, bla' y él dijo:'Bueno, soy dueño de un bar'. Estoy muy ocupado, así que veremos si puedo hacer que entres". Y yo estaba como, "¡Zorra! Así que, de todos modos, nos estábamos enviando correos electrónicos y me dio su número de teléfono".

"Así que llegué a la ciudad y lo llamé", dijo.

"Me alojaba en, de todos los lugares, el hotel Los Arcos. Dijo: "Vamos a Cuates y Cuetes, el bar junto al muelle". Nos conocimos y tomamos unas copas. Entonces esa noche me llevó al Bar Frida."

"En pocas palabras, al día siguiente fui a firmar en la convención y ese fue el único día que fui a la convención", dijo. "Pasé todo el tiempo con él, yendo a cenar, yendo al bar. Eso fue en septiembre. Luego volví para Halloween.

Luego volví para Navidad. Luego tuvo problemas con su negocio en Canadá, no tenía a nadie que se ocupara del bar, así que le ofrecí, así que se fue a Canadá y yo me encargué del bar. Y en septiembre, un año después, decidí mudarme aquí. ¡Y aquí estamos!"

Ha sido un largo camino y, aunque ninguno de los dos sabe lo que les depara el futuro, están orgullosos de lo que han construido aquí.

"Somos el único bar gay en la ciudad que celebra las cosas con un mariachi de 12 piezas", dijo Tom. "Estamos aquí para ganarnos la vida, pero también para disfrutar de la cultura y mantenerla viva. ¿Viste lo que hicimos aquí?"

Señaló hacia la salida y el nuevo mural, obra de arte pintada a mano por Adrian Takano hace un par de meses. "Pintamos esto para tratar de cubrir lo que hicieron en la puerta de al lado con esa horrible pizzería. Fuimos por el otro lado, pintamos el edificio con un cuadro de Frida y la cultura mexicana. Me paro ahí fuera por la noche y lo miro, y es tan conmovedor".

"Tengo una vida increíble aquí", agregó. "Y creo que Vallarta, a pesar de todos los cambios y los condominios y todas esas cosas, sigue siendo Vallarta. Por la noche, cuando miro por la ventana en casa y veo la bahía y las estrellas, sigue siendo mágico. Y correr el Bar Frida es un placer, y un obsequiar. Y un privilegio."

TOM AND LUIS look back on two decades of life IN VALLARTA AND BAR FRIDA

T

om Finley doesn’t care if you dispute any part of his recollection from the gay Vallarta of yore.

“Other people are going to question what I tell you,” he said, midway through a good many tequila shots one night at his 18-year-old watering hole, Bar Frida. “Sure, of course they are. But I think I’m probably the only one who’s been here for 25 years, so they can question what I say but they may have a hard time authenticating what they’re trying to correct.”

I was interested to learn more about the gay history of this city and Tom’s name came up frequently. He invited me to join him at Bar Frida so he could reminisce. I knew him by his location in the bar where daily he holds court: just inside the door, he’s the one at the far end of the long table immediately to the left. At the opposite end of that table routinely sits Luis, his partner of 16 years, and on that evening, in between the two, sat me and Mike Laking, a Canadian who’s lived in Vallarta the past three years.

The proprietor of this city’s possibly longest running gay-owned establishment is facing a couple significant milestones. Bar Frida is just two years away from its twentieth anniversary—it’s already achieved that distinction, if you count the two years it existed before he assumed control in 2001—and next February he will celebrate his 75th birthday. A Canadian immigrant, Tom has lived here full-time since 1998.

It all started, as it does for many people, with a vacation to Puerto Vallarta and a visit to the original Paco Paco bar. “I used to hang out there for happy hour,” he said. “Everybody went to the beach and got sun tanned and burned, got drunk on tequila or whatever, and then we would move on for act two at Paco’s. We’d all go up there and hang out. It was a great place.”

But upon his permanent arrival, his second attempt at retirement, Tom spent a couple years lounging at the beach and the bars before the idea to run an establishment like Bar Frida took control. “When I got down here, after two years of laying around on the beach I realized that life, I wasn’t ready for it,” he said. “Because everybody was drinking too much, you spent too much time on the beach, laying around and chasing the boys down the beach. So after a couple years of that I decided it just didn’t work and then I found Bar Frida.”

Before its relocation eight years ago, the bar was located where you’ll find Reinas Bar today. It’s just a block away and, according to Tom, the entire area at the time was not so welcome to Canadians, Americans, or gays. “Paco’s was over on the other side of the town,” he said, delineating the significance of the two block span that separated the two locations. “Mine was the first in what was considered to be 100% straight, a Mexican neighborhood. Everybody said, ‘Are you stupid?! Have you lost your mind?!’”

“I knew this territory,” he added, “because I was a real slut. I used to hang out at Paco’s but I lived in this neighborhood, around the corner, and I knew all the local people because there were cantinas on every block, and they were old fashioned Mexican cantinas. They were shoot-em-up, a wild bunch of cowboys. But they were nice people.”

Luis Mendez, Tom’s longtime partner, joined the conversation at this point. “The gay scene was different then,” he said. “Back then you’d meet young Mexican guys and they wanted to go home with you, it was just because they wanted to go home with you. There was no money involved, like it is now.”

“They bought YOU a beer!”

Tom said. “Every time you bought a beer, they would turn around and buy a beer, too. You’d sit with these cowboys from up in the mountains, and if they liked you, just by talking to you, you’d get really drunk because they’d just keep sending you a beer. And if you wanted to sleep with them, fine. If you didn’t, there was no questions asked. No money involved. It was just guys hanging out together, having fun. It wasn’t business. It was just fun. And that’s all changed. Now it’s a money town.”

As of last month, Tom and Luis have been together sixteen years.

Originally from Merida, Luis discovered Vallarta, and Tom, as one of those “young Mexican guys” he referenced. An endoscopist, he first traveled to this city for a professional convention and coordinated a meeting with Tom before his arrival.

“I knew I was coming here for a week, so I went online,” he said. “There was no cell phones back then, no Grindr, no Manhunt, anything like that. It was 2002. But there was this place, this site, an online thing called date.com and there were only three or four profiles.

One of them was him. I sent him a message saying, ‘I’m going to be in Puerto Vallarta, such and such, for a week, blah blah blah’ and he said, ‘Well, I’m a bar owner. I’m very busy so we’ll see if I can fit you in.’ And I was like, ‘You bitch!’ So, anyway, we were emailing each other and he gave me his phone number.”

“So I arrived in town and I called him,” he said. “I was staying at, of all places, Los Arcos hotel. He said ‘let’s go to Cuates y Cuetes, the bar by the pier. We met and we had drinks. Then that night he took me to Bar Frida.”

“So long story short, the next day I went to sign in at the convention and that was the only day I went to the convention” he said. “I spent the entire time with him, going to dinners, going to the bar. That was September. Then I came back for Halloween. Then I came back for Christmas. Then he had problems with his business in Canada, he didn’t have anybody to take care of the bar, so I offered, so he went to Canada and I took care of the bar. And in September, one year later, I decided to move here. And here we are!”

It’s been a long run and, though neither of the two knows what the future holds, they’re proud what they’ve built here.

“We are the only gay bar in town to celebrate things with a 12-piece mariachi,” said Tom. “We’re here to make a living but we’re also here to enjoy the culture and keep the culture alive. You see what we did out here?” He pointed toward the exit and the new mural, artwork handpainted by Adrian Takano a couple months ago. “We painted this to try and cover what they did next door with that god-awful pizza place.

We went the other way, we painted the building with a picture of Frida and the Mexican culture. I stand out there at night and look at it, and it’s so moving.”

“I have an amazing life here,” he added. “And I think Vallarta, in spite of all the changes and the condos and all that stuff, it’s still Vallarta. At night, when I look out my window at home and see the bay and the stars, it’s still magic. And running Bar Frida is a pleasure, and a treat. And a privilege.”

NO BONES ABOUT IT: Day of the Dead and Halloween are not the same thing

D

ia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday that celebrates and honors deceased loved ones.

It has evolved, gaining popularity in popular culture and familiarity with its traditions through recent films like James Bond’s Spectre (2015) and Pixar’s Coco (2017). The latter found its inspiration in the Mexican holiday, while the 007 thriller’s fictitious parade in Mexico City inspired a new tradition for the capital following its release.

The celebration in Mexico is held over the period from October 31st to November 2nd, coinciding with the Catholic All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2), but the festival's origins are rooted in a combination of Indigenous belief and elements from Spanish Colonialist religious teachings.

November 1st (Dia de los Angelitos or “Little Angels”) is reserved for honouring deceased children, while the second day is typically for deceased adults. Día de (los) Muertos is celebrated by holding graveside vigils, at which altars honoring the deceased’s life are typically constructed.

Many people also construct more private altars in their homes. These altars (altares) are decorated with the ubiquitous cempasúchil (Mexican marigold) flowers and candles, as well as skull iconography in some shape or form, and ofrendas (offerings) such as the deceased’s personal possessions, favourite drinks or foods (often Tequila).

The holiday holds such cultural significance that in 2008 it was declared a UNESCO event of “Intangible Cultural Heritage.” Jose Guadalupe Posada, a nineteenth-century illustrator and engraver from Aguascalientes, gained notoriety by satirizing death though his depiction of clothed skeletons performing everyday activities. He is credited with creating the character “La Catrina,” a well-dressed female skeleton, which has become one of the main symbols of Day of the Dead and has inspired many of the costumes and face painting that occurs throughout the celebrations.

Halloween originated from a Celtic tradition known as Samhain.

The Celts of 2000 years ago in what is now Ireland created the annual event in advance of a new year, which began on November 1. The day prior to it marked the end of summer and, in order to transition from summer to winter, the Celts created an event to ward off ghosts of the dead that they believed returned to the earth throughout the overnight.

By the year 600 AD, after the Romans had long since conquered Celtic territory, Pope Boniface IV created a feast of All Martyrs Day for the Western church and, in time, expanded it to include all saints. The observance took place, perhaps not coincidentally, on November 1.

Around the year 1000 AD, the church formally declared November 2 All Souls Day to honor the dead. The days leading toward All Souls Day were developed very likely with the Celtic Samhain in mind, and included bonfires, parades, and celebrants dressing in costumes as angels and devils. All Saints Day was also known as All-hallows and All-hallowmas which, in turn, made the prior day All-Hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

Historians have estimated the development of Halloween as an event that, over time, was intended to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a celebration originated by the Christian church.

Over the last 200 years, Halloween has evolved into a more secular and community-centered annual event, featuring games and costumes of all types and styles. In particular, it includes now the gifting of small treats to children in the community, which as of 2018 — between costumes, parties, and candy — has turned into a $6 billion industry in the United States alone.

El Día de los Muertos y Halloween no son lo mismo

E

l Día de los Muertos es un día festivo mexicano que celebra y honra a los seres queridos fallecidos.

Ha evolucionado, ganando popularidad en la cultura popular y familiarizándose con sus tradiciones a través de películas recientes como Spectre (2015) de James Bond y Coco (2017) de Pixar. Este último se inspiró en la fiesta mexicana, mientras que el desfile ficticio del thriller 007 en la Ciudad de México inspiró una nueva tradición para la capital tras su estreno.

La celebración en México se lleva a cabo del 31 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, coincidiendo con el Día de Todos los Santos Católicos (1 de noviembre) y el Día de Todos los Santos (2 de noviembre), pero los orígenes del festival están arraigados en una combinación de creencias indígenas y elementos de las enseñanzas religiosas colonialistas españolas.

El 1 de noviembre (Día de los Angelitos) está reservado para honrar a los niños fallecidos, mientras que el segundo día es típicamente para los adultos fallecidos. El Día de (los) Muertos se celebra con la celebración de vigilias junto a la tumba, en las que se construyen típicamente altares en honor a la vida del difunto. Muchas personas también construyen más altares privados en sus casas. Estos altares están decorados con las omnipresentes flores y velas de cempasúchil (caléndula mexicana), así como con la

iconograf ía del cráneo en alguna forma, y ofrendas como las posesiones personales del difunto, sus bebidas favoritas o alimentos (a menudo tequila).

La fiesta tiene tal importancia cultural que en 2008 fue declarada Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial por la UNESCO. José Guadalupe Posada, ilustrador y grabador del siglo XIX de Aguascalientes, ganó notoriedad al satírizar la muerte a través de su representación de esqueletos vestidos realizando actividades cotidianas.
