HURRICANE WILLA

climbed to reach Category 5 status before falling to Category 3 in the hours before it hit landfall, late in the month of October. With the memory of Hurricane Kenna in mind (from 2002), which devastated the Malecon, shop owners boarded up windows and the city sent vacationers at beachfront hotels to shelters.

But in the end, Puerto Vallarta was spared the wrath of Willa as she raced north of the bay before turning sharply inland. These photos are from the following day.

I

t was a beautiful, not too sunny or cloudy or humid or rainy day in mid-October at the Pinnacle Resorts’ Sky Bar when we pulled together the leaders from four of the top entertainment venues in this city for a freeflowing and unbridled conversation about the growth of live entertainment here.

The original idea for this issue was to list all of the shows coming up this season, and maybe pull a few quotes from the owners, but when the calendars started coming in it looked like one of those restaurant menus that has 20 pages: you don’t see anything. That’s when a new Idea presented itself.

Why don’t we bring everyone together in one room at the same time and let them talk shop?

Coordinating everyone’s schedule was its own challenge, and arranging for Mark Rome to travel all the way here from Ajijic for literally two hours provided some lastminute drama but, in the end, everything worked out fabulously. The surprise to me was that the lives of each of these four people are interwoven in ways I couldn’t have predicted.

And that all of them were willing to share credit where it is due: “One of the reasons that I really pushed to have Mark here today,” said Tracy Parks,

ue un día hermoso, no demasiado soleado, nublado, húmedo o lluvioso a mediados de octubre en el Pinnacle Resorts' Sky Bar cuando reunimos a los líderes de cuatro de los mejores lugares de entretenimiento de esta ciudad para una conversación libre y desenfrenada sobre el crecimiento del entretenimiento en vivo aquí.

La idea original de este número era hacer una lista de todos los espectáculos de esta temporada, y tal vez obtener algunas citas de los propietarios, pero cuando empezaron a aparecer los calendarios, parecía uno de esos menús de restaurante que tiene 20 páginas: no se ve nada. ROBERTO ORTIZ DE MONTELLANO: ejercer la abogacía en una de las mecas gays actuales

abiendo vivido en tres de las ciudades más grandes de México (Monterrey, Ciudad de México y Puebla), Roberto Ortiz de Montellano se encontró en la búsqueda de un lugar donde pudiera practicar leyes, encontrar una comunidad de homosexuales y ser abiertamente gay en el trabajo.

"Vallarta es el lugar más gay de México", dijo riendo, "en todo sentido".

Pero ninguna situación es nunca perfecta y, para Roberto, esto le ha creado una razón para el optimismo. Se mudó aquí hace unos cinco años y comenzó a ejercer la abogacía desde cero. Se ha beneficiado de las comodidades que la ciudad ofrece ahora, las cuales ha llegado a apreciar mientras vivía en las grandes ciudades mexicanas. Lo que encontró que la ciudad carecía de una red activa de profesionales mexicanos calificados de ideas afines.

"Soy un abogado mexicano", dijo. "Y un abogado abiertamente gay. Estudié derecho en una de las universidades más prestigiosas de México y llevo más de 20 años ejerciendo la abogacía. Mi especialidad es el derecho inmobiliario y el derecho de los negocios. Por

lo tanto, proporciono asesoría legal en transacciones de bienes raíces y también en transacciones de negocios e incorporación.

Ahora me estoy enfocando en la clientela extranjera aquí en Vallarta, la gente que está comprando una propiedad aquí o que tiene ciertos problemas con su propiedad aquí, yo proveo asesoría legal. Cuando quieren empezar un negocio o tener un negocio, yo me encargo del trabajo legal".

Ha tenido éxito, sin duda, pero en cuanto a la construcción de una relación romántica a largo plazo en una ciudad continuamente llena de visitantes que se quedan en cualquier lugar desde una semana hasta unos pocos meses, sólo ve un futuro brillante.

"Sí, es dif ícil porque es una ciudad turística", dijo, "y hay gente yendo y viniendo, pero también hay gente que viene aquí varias veces". Se quedan aún más tiempo cada vez. Una de las razones por las que me mudé aquí es que noté que hay muchas personas extranjeras que ahora son residentes mexicanos. Viven aquí a tiempo completo".

El crecimiento de la ciudad traerá más residentes de todo México e incluye a estadounidenses y canadienses. "Estoy aquí en un momento de máxima importancia para la ciudad porque, como profesional que vio la oportunidad hace cinco años, puedo ver que cada día hay más personas que ven lo mismo.

Médicos, dentistas. Las industrias están creciendo aquí. El crecimiento de la ciudad me ha traído aquí y los está trayendo a ellos también".

Parece que para este abogado mexicano abiertamente gay, vivir y trabajar ahora en Puerto Vallarta representa estar en el lugar correcto en el momento correcto. "Hay que estar donde las cosas pasan", dice Roberto con entusiasmo, "y mudarme aquí hace cinco años ha sido una de las mejores decisiones de mi vida".

ROBERTO ORTIZ DE MONTELLANO:

practicing law in one of today’s gay meccas

H

aving lived in three of Mexico’s largest cities (Monterrey, Mexico City and Puebla), Roberto Ortiz de Montellano found himself in search of a location where he would be able to practice law, find a community of gay people, and be openly gay at work.

“Vallarta is the gayest place in Mexico,” he said with a laugh, “in all regards.”

But no situation is ever perfect and, for Roberto, this has created for him a reason for optimism. He moved here about five years ago and started his law practice from scratch. He has benefited from the amenities the city now offers, ones that he had come to appreciate while living in the Mexican big cities. What he found the city lacked is an active network of qualified Mexican likeminded professionals.

“I’m a Mexican attorney,” he said. “And an openly gay attorney. I studied law in one

of Mexico’s most prestigious universities and I’ve been practicing law for over 20 years. My focus is mostly on real estate law and business law. So I provide legal counsel on real estate transactions and also business and incorporation transactions. Now I’m focusing on foreign clientele here in Vallarta, people who are buying property here or who have certain issues with their property here, I provide legal counsel. When they want to start a business or have a business deal, I take care of the legal work.”

He has been successful, without doubt, but as far as building a romantic long-term relationship in a town continually filled with visitors who stay anywhere from a week to a few months, he only sees a bright future.

“Yes, it’s difficult because it’s a touristic town,” he said, “and there are people coming and going but there are also people who come here several times. They stay even longer each

time. One of the reasons that I moved here is I noticed there is a lot of foreign people who are now Mexican residents. They live here fulltime.”

The growth of the city will bring more residents from across Mexico and it includes Americans and Canadians. “I’m here at a prime, important time for the city because, as a professional who saw opportunity five years ago, I can see that there are more coming every day who see the same thing. Doctors, dentists. Industries are growing here. The growth of the city has brought me here and it’s bringing them, too.”

Seems that for this openly gay Mexican attorney, living and working now in Puerto Vallarta represents being in the right place at the right time. “You have to be where things happen”, Roberto says enthusiastically, “and moving here five years ago has been one of the best decisions of my life”.

Once upon a time

Mark Rome opened a cabaret bar called The Palm and at one point he employed both Tracy Parks and Danny Mininni, who went on to open Incanto Vallarta and Act II Entertainment respectively. Before all of that, Danny owned a real estate firm and employed Mark, and it was through Mark who Tammy Carruthers Prust, co-owner of Nacho Daddy, purchased her first home in Puerto Vallarta. worked for Sean in Santa Fe. He is from Galveston and moved here 21 years ago and I moved here 10 years ago. We started out with live music bands and a couple times a year we’d have guest acts in.

Nacho Daddy moved to our present location six year ago and at the same time the Boutique Theater had lost their lease, and so they needed a place, and we have the space upstairs that was available. We were in a lot of trouble because we built a speaker up there, it was exposed then, and the sound would travel all the way to Casa Isabel. I didn’t get complaints from our neighbors. I got them from Casa Isabel!

So with Boutique, the first year was difficult trying to figure out who got space and trying to figure out the theater because we’d only done live music. But it has worked out very well. We use the space for Nacho Daddy on the band nights, we have it at 9pm. The Boutique Theater has it in the daytime with a 5:30 slot.

Who’s not excited that Amy Armstrong is coming?! She said she was not coming back. As soon as I heard that I waited and let all the dust settle, and then I started sending her messages about how we’d love to have her, and that we’re trying to start something new up here. So it worked out very well.

And this opened a door for us. Last year we had a couple of shows, people we knew and friends would play. This year we’re actually booking some.

Nacho Daddy se mudó a nuestra ubicación actual hace seis años y al mismo tiempo el Teatro Boutique había perdido su contrato de arrendamiento, por lo que necesitaban un lugar, y tenemos el espacio disponible en el piso de arriba. Tuvimos muchos problemas porque construimos un altavoz y el sonido llegaba hasta Casa Isabel. No recibí quejas de nuestros vecinos.

Así que con Boutique, el primer año fue dif ícil tratar de averiguar quién tenía espacio y el teatro porque sólo habíamos hecho música en vivo. Pero ha funcionado muy bien. Usamos el espacio para Nacho Daddy en las noches de la banda, lo tenemos a las 9pm. El Teatro Boutique lo tiene durante el día con un espacio para las 5:30. ¡¿Quién no está emocionado de que Amy Armstrong venga?!

Dijo que no iba a volver. Tan pronto como me enteré de que había esperado y dejado que se calmara el polvo, empecé a enviarle mensajes sobre cómo nos encantaría tenerla, y que estamos tratando de empezar algo nuevo aquí arriba. Así que funcionó muy bien.

Y esto nos abrió una puerta. El año pasado tuvimos un par de espectáculos, gente que conocíamos y amigos que tocarían.

Este año en realidad estamos reservando algunos.

efore The Palm opened, the plan was to open a bingo hall.

And on the week to open it up, they wouldn’t give us a license for gambling. They wanted an extra $50,000 dollars.

We looked at each other and said, “What the fuck are we gonna do now?!”

We became a video bar! A bar to go to before you went to Paco Paco. We were quite successful and then a guy from Ottawa called Dixie Landers was here on vacation and said, “Can I do a drag show?” So we went to Sam’s Club and bought some big flashlights and those were our show lights.

He kept filling the bar, night after night, and then he went home. Then our bar was empty. People would come and say “No show tonight?” We were full before we had him, and after two weeks of a drag show, everybody wanted a show. So we were empty until we asked the local drag queens to come in. That was the only way we could get people back.

I opened a new club in Ajijic and not so much for the money but because I miss this business. It’s so much fun, those years of doing it here. Doing it again in Ajijic it’s an older audience. And I’m lucky that these guys in Puerto Vallarta are all so successful that I can draw from all their performers.

I’m excited about all of the acts coming this season. In all honesty.

For me, it’s virgin territory for the acts that are coming there. It’s an easy job for me, promoting, because they’ve done all their promoting here. Everything is new to Ajijic and the town is so excited.

ntes de que The Palm abriera, planeábamos abrir una sala de bingo. Y en la semana para abrirlo, no nos dieron una licencia para apostar. Querían 50.000 dólares extra. Nos miramos el uno al otro y dijimos: "¡¿Qué carajo vamos a hacer ahora?!"

Nos convertimos en un video bar! Un bar al que ir antes de ir a Paco Paco. Tuvimos mucho éxito y entonces un tipo de Ottawa llamado Dixie Landers estuvo aquí de vacaciones y dijo, "¿Puedo hacer un show de arrastre?" Así que fuimos al Sam's Club y compramos unas linternas grandes y esas eran nuestras luces del show.

Siguió llenando el bar, noche tras noche, y luego se fue a casa.

Entonces nuestro bar estaba vacío. La gente venía y decía: "No show tonight?" Estábamos llenos antes de que lo tuviéramos, y después de dos semanas de un show de arrastre, todos querían un show. Así que estábamos vacíos hasta que le pedimos a las drag queens locales que vinieran. Era la única forma de recuperar a la gente.

Abrí un nuevo club en Ajijic y no tanto por el dinero sino porque echo de menos este negocio. Es tan divertido, esos años de hacerlo aquí. Hacerlo de nuevo en Ajijic es un público mayor.

Y tengo la suerte de que estos chicos en Puerto Vallarta son tan exitosos que puedo dibujar de todos sus intérpretes.

Estoy entusiasmado con todos los actos de esta temporada.

Con toda honestidad. Para mí, es territorio virgen para los actos que están llegando allí. Es un trabajo fácil para mí, promocionar, porque ellos han hecho toda su promoción aquí. Todo es nuevo para Ajijic y la ciudad está muy emocionada.

y first time I was here The Palm hadn’t even opened yet. That was 1999. I’d started coming here about four times a year after that, and then I was coming every other month because I loved being here.

The Boutique Theater is now part of Nacho Daddy and I started there ten years ago with the very first production and worked with them for four years. It was just this 46 seat theater. When I left there I had a season at The Palm. Mark and I were working together in my real estate company. I said, ‘Look, we really want to do something different,’ so he said, “ok, I’ll give you these four nights a week for the entire season.” The first Act II production was Rocky Horror Show at The Palm.

The funny thing is, then, that Mark came with me to Act II to work for my first two seasons. He taught me the cabaret business. I didn’t know it.

This season on a personal level I’m very excited about Little Shop of Horrors because I get to act on stage again.

On the main stage Nunsense and Cinderella is gonna be really fun. On the Red Room side, Diana Villamonte is a huge success on The Voice of Mexico (TV show) and she’s just selling out every show and so I’m really excited about Diana.

is a founder of Act II Entertainment. He now shares ownership of the venue with Oscar Cisneros and Alfonso López.

a primera vez que vine, The Palm ni siquiera había abierto. Eso fue en 1999. Comencé a venir aquí unas cuatro veces al año después de eso, y luego venía cada dos meses porque me encantaba estar aquí.

El Teatro Boutique es ahora parte de Nacho Daddy y yo empecé allí hace diez años con la primera producción y trabajé con ellos durante cuatro años. Era un teatro de 46 asientos. Cuando me fui de allí, tuve una temporada en The Palm. Mark y yo trabajábamos juntos en mi compañía de bienes raíces. Le dije:'Mira, realmente queremos hacer algo diferente', así que me dijo:'Está bien, te daré estas cuatro noches a la semana durante toda la temporada'".

La primera producción del Act II fue Rocky Horror Show at The Palm.

Por el lado de Red Room, Diana Villamonte es un gran éxito en The Voice of Mexico (programa de televisión) y está vendiendo todos los programas, así que estoy muy emocionada con Diana.

I

was working with my family in an oil field service business.

Prior to that I was with Lyric Opera and I learned arts management but to make money I went back to work with my family. We’d come here for a month at a time and then go back home and work. I started coming here in 2001, about the time The Palm opened.

Now the accounting system we have to keep everything so perfect is just crazy but compare it to the old system, where we had two pockets and fifty pesos for the show went here and personal money went there and you figured it out at the end of the night. “Oh, it looks like I have twenty fifty-peso bills. That’s how much we made!”

There’ve been struggles but now that we’ve all sort of grown up, and found our groove, it is really nice to come together, to reflect, it feels nice to be able to do this. And the fact that we are all still here, it’s wonderful.

I miss the Palm. I’m glad I have my own venue, but I’m also glad that The Palm owners called me a few months ago and they were like “Hey, whatever happened, happened and we’re all supporting each other and lets just all do well.” And that’s all I want, you know.

Because we’ve been open all summer, our season kind of never stopped. The continuity is what I’m excited about now.

The Red Suitcases, Dennis Crow, Well Strung. They sell out every show for a whole month. Naked Boys Singing is going to be the anchor to the beginning of our season. I’ve been in rehearsals and I’m very excited about the music especially.

staba trabajando con mi familia en un negocio de servicios petroleros. Antes de eso estuve con Lyric Opera y aprendí administración de arte, pero para ganar dinero volví a trabajar con mi familia. Veníamos aquí durante un mes a la vez y luego volvíamos a casa a trabajar. Empecé a venir aquí en 2001, cuando The Palm abrió.

Ahora el sistema de contabilidad que tenemos para mantener todo tan perfecto es una locura, pero compárenlo con el viejo sistema, donde teníamos dos bolsillos y cincuenta pesos para el show que iba aquí y el dinero personal que iba allá y lo descubrieron al final de la noche. "Oh, parece que tengo billetes de veinte y medio pesos. ¡Eso es lo que hicimos!"

Ha habido luchas, pero ahora que todos hemos crecido, y hemos encontrado nuestro ritmo, es realmente agradable reunirse, reflexionar, se siente bien poder hacer esto. Y el hecho de que todos estemos aquí, es maravilloso.

Extraño el Palm. Estoy contento de tener mi propio local, pero también estoy contento de que los dueños de The Palm me llamaran hace unos meses y dijeran: "Oye, lo que haya pasado, pasó, pasó y todos nos apoyamos unos a otros y dejamos que todos lo hagan bien". hat I am really looking forward to this season is working with Miss Coco Peru. While our seasons consistently thrill audiences with Miss Conception, Kim Kuzma, BohemiaViva and Branden & James, I have longed to experience Coco's show. Our season is full of new acts, and there is something for everyone.

The Palm Cabaret is excited to unveil its new look, new talent, and new shows from some returning favorites. The Palm has undergone some slight renovations. An increased capacity and the removal of pole obstructions have allowed for a more spacious cabaret environment with additional seating options for guests.

Miss Conception has been around the world, but this season you’ll see her in two different shows. For the first time, she arrives in November with her festive take on the holidays. A little bit naughty and a little bit nice but a lot of fun. She also takes on the small screen with her show titled “TV Land.” Both all new, live singing, costume reveal spectacular, will prove once again, why Miss Conception is one of Puerto Vallarta’s favorites.

One thing we are sure of is our line-up this year offers something for everyone. We listened to our audiences and we delivered. Part of the joy in putting together a line up for The Palm is getting to know our artists. The Palm is not just a cabaret, we consider a home for some of the most talented individuals on the planet. We will keep listening, we will continue to strive to bring the best, and we will forever work non-stop to keep you engaged in live entertainment.

transplanted Canadian, Steve moved to PV in 2012. Buying a condo here was the planned part; picking up his life and landing in Puerto Vallarta permanently, that was the unplanned part.

Shortly after purchasing an investment property here, he was offered an exit package from his employer. To make a long story short, he sold that condo, paid off the home equity loan he took out to buy it, went directly to the Mexican consulate in Montreal and, the next thing he knew, he was closing on a home purchase here in PV — all in the span of two months!

Missing the old life? Still adjusting to the new? Opportunities to go back? Yes, to all three. Working in real estate in a vacation/tourist market has its challenges. The rewarding part is helping people to achieve their dreams either through real estate investment, relocation or early retirement income with the eventuality of moving to this beautiful place so many of us now call home.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Walk my dog, head to the beach, relax, chill, Netflix, read, the usual.

If you could share a secret about Puerto Vallarta, what would it be?

Hiking trails & biking seem to be catching on. The other day coming through Puerto Vallarta you could see a huge waterfall in the mountains. Puerto Vallarta is blessed with a unique topography of mountains meeting the ocean. This is an untapped resource Puerto Vallarta has yet to fully capitalize in on.

What things do you not like to do?

Endure small talk. It has to lead somewhere to keep things interesting.

What would your autobiography be called?

Eat, Pray, Love. Oh, wait that is already taken. How about Play, Laugh, Love, Repeat.

What’s your secret talent?

Difficult question. I get along well with others.

What always cheers you up when you think about it?

Having a free day. That feeling you get when you realize you have nothing pending and nothing urgent to do. You wake up and the day is yours. No one is expecting anything from you. You can head to a market or go and explore a new place. One time I was working in Portland Oregon, and it was a Saturday. I had my hiking sandals on, grabbed a coffee and jumped in the car. I drove to the coast and walked down the beach for 2.5 hours, had lunch, and then walked 2.5 hours back. One of the best feelings in the world is when you have nothing to do and then just do something.

Because I work in real estate in Puerto Vallarta for Tropicasa Realty, most people come to me with questions about purchasing real estate in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They want to understand the process of buying and selling, what is required as a foreigner, why do we need a trust, how do real estate transactions differ than their home country, do I need a will, etc, etc..

What movie title best describes your life?

Thelma and Louise, after I Googled “What movie best describes your life?” But seriously?

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

I would read more but give up sleep? I love sleep. I like naps, afternoon weekends in the rain on the hammock.

What was the best compliment you’ve received?

Well you’re an independent character. I am not sure if it was meant as a compliment but I took it as such.

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?

Sailing. I used to sail in the summers in Canada. A friend who was recently visiting Puerto Vallarta asked why I wasn’t taking advantage

What’s the hardest lesson you’ve learned?

Not to take things personally. We can all be sensitive to comments and opinions of others. People who take pot shots and are generally demeaning are just an energy drain.

n canadiense trasplantado, Steve se mudó a PV en 2012. Comprar un condominio aquí fue la parte planeada; tomar su vida y aterrizar en Puerto Vallarta permanentemente, esa fue la parte no planeada. Poco después de comprar una propiedad de inversión aquí, se le ofreció un paquete de salida de su empleador. Para hacer una larga historia corta, vendió ese condominio, pagó el préstamo sobre el valor acumulado de la vivienda que pidió para comprarlo, fue directamente al consulado mexicano en Montreal y, lo siguiente que supo, estaba a punto de cerrar la compra de una casa aquí en PV - ¡todo en el lapso de dos meses! ¿Extrañando la vieja vida? ¿Sigues adaptándote a lo nuevo? ¿Oportunidades para volver? Sí, a los tres. Trabajar en bienes raíces en un mercado vacacional/turístico tiene sus desaf íos. La parte gratificante es ayudar a las personas a alcanzar sus sueños, ya sea a través de la inversión inmobiliaria, la reubicación o la jubilación anticipada, con la posibilidad de mudarse a este hermoso lugar al que muchos de nosotros ahora llamamos hogar. ¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre?

¿Qué es lo que siempre te anima cuando lo piensas?

Tener un día libre. Esa sensación que tienes cuando te das cuenta de que no tienes nada pendiente y nada urgente que hacer. Te despiertas y el día es tuyo. Nadie espera nada de ti. Puedes ir a un mercado o a explorar un nuevo lugar. Una vez estaba trabajando en Portland, Oregon, y era sábado. Me puse mis sandalias de senderismo, tomé un café y me subí al auto. Conduje hasta la costa y caminé por la playa durante 2.5 horas, almorcé y luego caminé 2.5 horas de regreso. Uno de los mejores sentimientos del mundo es cuando no tienes nada que hacer y luego simplemente haces algo.

Si no tuvieras que dormir, ¿qué harías con el tiempo extra?

Leería más pero dejaría de dormir? Me encanta dormir. Me gustan las siestas, los fines de semana por la tarde bajo la lluvia en la hamaca. ¿En qué pasatiempo te meterías si el tiempo y el dinero no fueran un problema?

Quieren entender el proceso de compra y venta, qué se requiere como extranjero, por qué necesitamos un fideicomiso, cómo difieren las transacciones de bienes raíces de su país de origen, si necesito un testamento, etc, etc., etc. ¿Qué título de la película describe mejor tu vida?

Thelma y Louise, después de que busqué en Google "¿Qué película describe mejor tu vida?" ¿Pero en serio? ¿Cuál ha sido el mejor cumplido que has recibido?

Bueno, eres un personaje independiente.

No estoy seguro de que fuera un cumplido, pero lo tomé como tal. ¿Cuál es la lección más dif ícil que has aprendido?

No es por tomar las cosas como algo personal. Todos podemos ser sensibles a los comentarios y opiniones de los demás. Las personas que se inyectan y que generalmente son degradantes son sólo un drenaje de energía.

BEER AND TACOS! Also: a men’s health fair

T

he medical professionals at UroVallarta understand the degree to which so many people refuse to talk about health issues.

“I had over 200 people at my pink cocktail the other night at San Javier hospital with prizes and wine and food and it was fabulous,” said Pam Thompson, who is seemingly everyone’s go-to person for health services here. She hosts a speaker’s series and clinics in the city year-round. “But I had just five women show up to my speaker’s program on breast health. People don’t want to hear it, but it’s there, so we’ve got to get to them another way. Any of these cancer topics, we can’t get people to go.”

And so sprung the idea for a men’s health fair. With bands and food and drinks, the event is intended to both entertain and educate.

“Everyone knows about October and breast cancer awareness, but most people don’t know about Movember,” said Habid Becerra, a surgeon of urology who, along with his sister Dr. Cinthia Becerra and their father, Dr. Carlos Garcia, are overseeing this year’s Movember initiative.

“The objective of the event is to—” “Eat tacos and drink beer!” said Pam. “Because it’s so difficult to host a conversation on this topic.”

“We’ve tried that. It didn’t work,” she said.

“So the thing now is to try to entertain people with games and beer and tacos and very subtly tell them to come here and get your balls checked.”

The event takes place in the parking lot at the UroVallarta clinic in Col. Fluvial at Av. Francisco Villa 1389 on the afternoon of Saturday November 10 from 1-6pm. And, if anything, it’s an excellent opportunity to check out the first-rate facility and learn more about its services.

“In urology, a problem we have is the misconception that the urologist is the male’s gynecologist and we only see kidneys and prostates,” Dr. Habid said. “But that’s not true. It’s a very wide spectrum specialty and the approach that we want to offer to our patients is a clinic that can offer different kinds of urology services, not only for men and women, including hormone replacement therapy.”

“Dr. Garcia is the only doctor in Mexico with the technology to treat prostate cancer by ultrasound,” added Dr. Cinthia. “Together we try to localize faster and stop the growth of the cancer so the treatment is less invasive. Patients are admitted in the morning and discharged in the afternoon. And it’s all ultrasound, no damage to nerves. No side effects. The recovery is good. It’s all done here in our office, the machine is here.”

“And Dr. Garcia has a contract with the developers of the equipment and he trains other doctors,” she said. “Even in the United States, all the doctors train here. It’s a lot of knowledge and we try to educate the people. In the area of urology the technology has grown enormously.”

¡CERVEZA Y TACOS! También: una feria de salud masculina

L

os profesionales médicos de UroVallarta entienden el grado en que tanta gente se niega a hablar de temas de salud.

"Tuve más de 200 personas en mi cóctel rosa la otra noche en el hospital de San Javier con premios, vino y comida, y fue fabuloso", dijo Pam Thompson, quien es la persona a la que todos acuden para recibir servicios de salud aquí. Es anfitriona de una serie de conferencias y clínicas en la ciudad durante todo el año. "Pero sólo cinco mujeres asistieron al programa de oradores sobre la salud de los senos. La gente no quiere oírlo, pero está ahí, así que tenemos que llegar a ellos de otra manera. Cualquiera de estos temas de cáncer, no podemos hacer que la gente vaya".

Y así surgió la idea de una feria de salud masculina. Con bandas y comida y bebida, el evento tiene como objetivo entretener y educar.

"Todo el mundo conoce el mes de octubre y la concienciación sobre el cáncer de mama, pero la mayoría de la gente no conoce Movember", dijo Habid Becerra, un cirujano de urología que, junto con su hermana, la Dra. Cinthia Becerra, y su padre, el Dr. Carlos García, están supervisando la iniciativa Movember de este año.

"El objetivo del evento es..." "¡Come tacos y bebe cerveza!" dijo Pam. "Porque es muy dif ícil tener una conversación sobre este tema."

"Ya lo hemos intentado. No funcionó", dijo.

"Así que la cosa ahora es tratar de entretener a la gente con juegos y cerveza y tacos y muy sutilmente decirles que vengan aquí y te revisen las cojones."

El evento se lleva a cabo en el estacionamiento de la clínica UroVallarta en el Col. Fluvial de la Av. Francisco Villa 1389 en la tarde del sábado 10 de noviembre de 1-6pm. Y, en todo caso, es una excelente oportunidad para conocer las instalaciones de primera clase y aprender más sobre sus servicios.

"En urología, nuestro problema es la idea errónea de que el urólogo es el ginecólogo del hombre y sólo vemos riñones y próstatas", dijo el Dr. Habid. "Pero eso no es verdad. Es una especialidad de muy amplio espectro y el enfoque que queremos ofrecer a nuestros pacientes es una clínica que puede ofrecer diferentes tipos de servicios de urología, no sólo para hombres y mujeres, incluyendo terapia de reemplazo hormonal".

"El Dr. García es el único médico en México con la tecnología para tratar el cáncer de próstata por ultrasonido", agregó la Dra. Cinthia.

"Juntos tratamos de localizar más rápido y detener el crecimiento del

cáncer para que el tratamiento sea menos invasivo". Los pacientes son ingresados por la mañana y dados de alta por la tarde. Y todo es ultrasonido, sin dañar los nervios. Sin efectos secundarios. La recuperación es buena. Todo se hace aquí en nuestra oficina, la máquina está aquí."

"Y el Dr. García tiene un contrato con los desarrolladores del equipo y capacita a otros médicos", dijo. "Incluso en los Estados Unidos, todos los médicos se entrenan aquí. Es mucho conocimiento y tratamos de educar a la gente. En el área de la urología, la tecnología ha crecido enormemente".

In my spare time I can often be seen running in the mornings, exercising at the stadium, relaxing at the beach and I like to go to the movies.

anuel was born in Durango, Dgo, Mexico. He lived there for most of his life, studying marketing at Universidad España de Durango and working in advertising. Like so many of us, he moved to Vallarta last year in search of work and a beautiful life. He came to Sapori di Sicilia looking for a position in the restaurant’s kitchen because he loves to cook and then had the opportunity to manage the restaurant. What’s your secret talent?

I think that I am a really good listener and I can open jars.

Who inspires you to be better?

My father and his life inspired me to live the best life I can and to live up to my potential.

And the kind heart of my mom.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?

Relax more, exercise more, meditate. I love sleeping though, so I am happy to spend time doing it.

What’s the hardest lesson you’ve learned?

I’ve learned that I need to surround myself with people who think and want the same things as I do. It took me a long time to learn this.
