NEW OWNERS FULFILL THE PROMISE OF MULTI-FLOOR EXPANSION AT ANONIMO

W

hen Roger Allen and Bryan Stocks gained ownership of Anonimo late last year, it was not necessarily the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.

“Our discussion was, how do we get to Puerto Vallarta before we’re 65 or 70 years old?” said Bryan, “because everybody says come sooner rather than later. We weren’t looking, but the opportunity just came to us and we took it.”

“It’s not an opportunity unless you take it,” added Roger.

The two have visited the city for the past seven years from their home in Oklahoma and, after over two decades flipping houses, they’d just closed on their first custom-built home when the occasion to own a business here presented itself.

“We both had careers,” Roger said. “I was a respiratory therapist for a hospital in Oklahoma City. I worked two days a week and was paid for the whole week so I ran my own interior design and event planning business.

The last couple years I’d been coming here for five days every six or eight weeks, just because my job allowed it.

It was Roger who was present when the couple assumed ownership of the bar last November. Though they are quick to credit the previous owner for transferring a wellestablished and respected organization to them, the two immediately began learning the ropes and putting some of their plans into place.

“Our bartenders, David and Victor, were amazing helping me,” Roger said. “They’re very dependable. I’d figured out a lot of things myself but I couldn’t have done it without David and Victor. They were great with the transition of ownership.”

“We started immediately, when we took over, opening at 4pm instead of 8pm,” added Bryan. “We knew that if we bought the bar that we were going to finish out the third floor.

Dan, the previous owner, originally wanted to have a wine bar on the third floor. I don’t know if his concept of the design of it was what Roger finished out when he arrived here, but we kinda took what he wanted to do for years and years and developed that into what we saw it being.”

The expansion to the third floor, and its branding as a wine bar, has presented opportunities and challenges for the owners as it regards the identity of the two, at times seemingly discrete, spaces. “I met this couple one night at the door,” Bryan said, “and they were probably in their 80s. I saw them kinda peeking in. I talked to them a little bit and then I was like ‘you guys might wanna go upstairs.’

So I took them to the top floor. They said ‘this is really nice,’ but then they came straight back downstairs! So I’ve stopped trying to judge where people might be comfortable. Over the next three or four weeks, they brought 1015-20 people each time they came in. I think the last night they were here they brought 25 people here to sing karaoke.”

ROGER ALLEN and BRYAN STOCKS And the planning and innovating has not stopped. The two are looking into renovating the well-adorned if nonetheless dormant second floor at Anonimo. Customers have suggested they consider turning it into a game room, with a pool table, or investing in salsa music, but as for now they’re keeping their cards close to their chests.

“Food is what it was designed for,” Roger said, referencing the kitchen space embedded into the layout. “What I’ve found is that people don’t go to Anonimo to eat. I’m not saying food won’t ever be served there. But I think if we expand the second floor with its own bar, the food will come later.”

All of this addition has brought with it the need for two new bartenders. “Evan and Pedro are the newest,” Roger said. “I see them staying with us for a long time. They’re great guys. People like them and they feel like part of the family. In the past our customers have only known two bartenders, David and Victor, and they LOVE them! It’s overwhelming how many people David and Victor know from around the world, and these people come in specially to see them. It’s goes to show how great these guys are.”

uando Roger Allen y Bryan Stocks se convirtieron en dueños de Anónimo el año pasado, no fue necesariamente el sueño que siempre habían tenido.

“Nuestra platica fue sobre la pregunta de ¿Cómo llegar a Puerto Vallarta antes de tener 65 y 70 años?” dijo Bryan, “porque todos llegan aquí en algún momento de su vida. Nosotros no estábamos pensando en movernos, pero la oportunidad llego y la tomamos.”

“No es una oportunidad al menos de que la tomes,” agrego Roger.

Los dos han visitado la ciudad durante los últimos siete años, viajando desde su hogar en Oklahoma y, después de dos décadas renovando casas, ellos habían terminado de construir su primera casa cuando esta oportunidad de negocio se les presento.

“Ambos contamos con una carrera,” Roger nos comentó. “Yo fui un terapeuta respiratorio para un hospital en la ciudad de Oklahoma. Yo trabajaba dos días a la semana y me pagaban un salario completo así que me daba tiempo de tener mis negocios, uno de diseño de interiores MAY 2018

y otro de planeación de eventos. Durante los últimos años he estado visitando Puerto Vallarta unos cinco días cada seis u ocho semanas, solo por el hecho de que mi trabajo me lo permitía.”

Fue Roger a quien estuvo presente cuando la pareja tomo posesión de este bar el pasado mes de noviembre. A pesar de que no dudan en darle el crédito merecido al último dueño en cuanto a este respetado establecimiento, los dos empezaron inmediatamente en aprender la magia del negocio y llevar acabo algunos de sus planes.

“Nuestros baristas, David y Víctor fueron increíbles con su ayuda,” Roger nos comentó. “Es muy fácil depender de ellos. Yo averigüe muchas cosas por mí solo pero no lo hubiera poder hecho sin la ayuda de David y Víctor. Ellos fueron geniales con el proceso de transición durante la compra-venta” “Empezamos inmediatamente cuando tomamos posesión, abriendo a las 4pm en lugar de alas 8pm,” agrego Bryan. “Sabíamos que si comprábamos el bar tendríamos que terminar el tercer piso.

Dan, el dueño anterior originalmente quería tener un bar enfocado a vinos en el tercer piso. En realidad, no sé si este era el concepto original del diseño, pero fue Roger el que lo termino cuando llego aquí. Prácticamente tomamos lo que el quiso hacer por años y lo desarrollamos a lo que pensamos tenía en mente.”

La expansión del tercer nivel y su desarrollo como bar de vinos ha presentado tanto retos como oportunidades para los dueños ya que tiene que ver con la identidad de los dos, aparentando ser espacios discretos de vez en cuando”. “Conocí a una pareja una noche en la entrada,” nos comentó Bryan, “y ellos tenían fácilmente 80 años. Los vi curioseando a la entrada. Hable con ellos por un rato y les comenté “quizás les gustaría subir a nuestro tercer piso.” Los lleve y les pareció muy lindo, pero después ¡decidieron bajarse al primer nivel! Después de esto deje de asumir sobre que es lo que les puede gustar a las personas. Durante estas próximas tres o cuatro semanas, ellos han traído 10-15-20 personas cada vez que ellos venían. Creo que la última vez que nos visitaron llegaron con 25 invitados para cantar karaoke.”

Y la planeación e innovación no ha parado. Los dos están buscando renovar el actualmente bien decorado segundo piso de Anónimo. Los clientes han sugerido que ellos lo conviertan en un área de juego con mesa de billar, o invertirle en música salsa, pero hasta ahora aun no toman ninguna decisión.

“La comida fue la inspiración para el diseño” nos comentó Roger, dándole referencia al espacio de la cocina integrado al espacio. “Lo que encontré es que las personas no van a Anónimo para comer. No estoy diciendo que no se servirá comida, pero creo que, si expándenos el segundo piso incluyéndole su propio bar, la comida vendrá después.”

Y todas estas nuevas adiciones al espacio a llevado a la necesidad de tener dos nuevos baristas. “Evan y Pedro son los nuevos integrantes” Roger agrego. “Yo los veo siendo parte del equipo por un largo tiempo.

Son geniales y les caen bien a nuestros clientes. Son como parte de la familia. En el pasado nuestros clientes solo conocían a los baristas David y Víctor y en realidad ¡los AMAN! Es en realidad abrumador cuantas personas de todo el mundo conocen a Victor y David y muchos de ellos vienen especialmente a verlos. Esto nos muestra lo genial que son.

FIVE YEARS IN, Pride organization grapples with growth and securing community bonds to fund a weeklong festival

A

rmando Sanchez is proud to note that the very first Vallarta Pride celebration was conceived and produced in just three months.

“In 2013 as a group we basically started working to produce Vallarta Pride in February,” he said. “We started working in February, started producing pride in March and April, and then May, so within three months we pulled of the first Vallarta Pride. But within all that experience we noticed that we needed to be a legal entity.”

Sanchez is currently the President of ACT LGBT, la Asociación Civil de Comercio y Turismo LGBT. It is the organization that oversees the volunteer efforts of the Vallarta Pride committee. According to Armando, the community-based effort that produced the first Pride ran into a roadblock the following year as it attempted to develop bonds with government and potential funding agencies. It is for that reason that ACT LGBT was created.

The leadership of the organization, an association of LGBT-owned and LGBT-friendly businesses, believes that the formation of an official coordinated body that includes a robust number of members will open doors at government easier than if one individual or business attempted to do the same thing. Sanchez, who outside the ACT LGBT sphere is an owner of Palmera Vacations, is quick to point out that membership has privileges as well.

“The association hosts monthly events where we present products or services that will benefit the business community,” he said. “And every month we also host a social mixer for networking for business owners to interact and share business information. And we have monthly meetings regarding the ACT LGBT orientation, what are we doing, where are we going, where are we moving to, so that we’re all on the same page on what the association is and what we are working on for the community.”

Pride is its own unique beast inside ACT LGBT but, as evidenced by its formation, it wasn’t always that way. “In 2015 I was president of Pride,” he said, “so I was in charge of the whole festival. I was on the ACT committee and I was in charge of the Vallarta Pride committee.

It was a lot of work. We pulled it off and it was great. But that’s when I said there needs to be two: the ACT association to focus on its projects, and pride committee only on pride because it’s getting so big.”

Vallarta Pride, as an organization, shouldn’t be confused with the Pride events that are familiar from cities across the U.S. and Canada.

Here in PV, Vallarta Pride does not present every event associated with the weeklong festival. “Pride the brand is an umbrella where we focus on promotion,” he said, “and international promotion and national promotion is not cheap. We try to work with all the different organizers, the film festival, the parties, the health fair, the public events. What we produce as Vallarta Pride is the parade and this year we’re presenting a farmer’s market that will be in the evening at Lazaro Cardenas park.”

With that degree of decentralization it appears the organization struggles to underscore its value across a community of businesses that ordinarily find themselves competitors for a tourist (and local) peso.

“It’s getting complicated because a lot of businesses are saying that they already have business so they don’t see the need to sponsor Pride,” he said.

“So what I always tell everyone, and I make it public, is that it’s bigger than that. It’s bigger than your pocket. It’s for the community, it’s visibility, it’s education and that doesn’t have a price. That’s what we’re finding.”

“Being a cultural festival we’ve tried to get funding from the government, federal, state, but we haven’t been able to,” Sanchez added. “They do help with promotion with bringing media and things to cover the festival, but actually paying the bills, that’s the hard part.

Right now we’re trying to figure out how it’s going to work. We feel that there’s nothing yet, no resolution about that. It could be a turning point for the festival, because if you don’t have the funding for it, then how do you produce it?”

As for this year, President Sanchez is optimistic.

“Now Pride is bringing more than 20,000 people for the week,” he said. “You see that movement. It’s growth and there is business for everyone. Automatically it activates the economy. Bars are full, restaurants are full.” He reports that the Vallarta Pride revelers are overwhelmingly Mexican nationals, a figure he estimates is around 70%.

“The parade is always a highlight,” he said. “I like the block party, definitely with the themes that the different businesses have. The drag derby is a highlight. It’s very fun. I’m looking forward to the farmer’s fair with the activity that we’ll have. But everything is a highlight that week. The screenings for the film festival. This is the first time we’ll have a public concert with Lorena Herrera. It’s a concert for the entire community, not just the LGBT community. It’s going to be a Teatro Vallarta. That is a huge highlight.”

Sánchez es actualmente el presidente de ACT LGBT, la Asociación Civil de Comercio y Turismo LGBT. Esta es la organización que supervisa el esfuerzo voluntario del comité Vallarta Pride. “La asociación lleva a cabo eventos mensuales donde presentamos productos y servicios que son de beneficio a la comunidad”, nos mencionó. “Cada mes tenemos eventos casuales para aquellas personas que trabajan en las redes, para así lograr la interacción entre todos, compartiendo información de negocios.

Tenemos también juntas mensuales para la orientación de ACT LGBT, donde se platica lo que se está llevando acabo, la dirección que se está tomando y diferentes planes importantes para así todos estar en sincronía en cuanto a lo que se está trabajando dentro de la comunidad” Pride toma una identidad única dentro de ACT LGBT, pero, también, como evidencia de su formación, no siempre fue así. “En el año 2015 yo fui presidente de Pride,” nos mencionó, “así que yo estuve a cargo de todo el festival. Yo formaba parte del comité ACT y estuve a cargo del comité Vallarta Pride y esto fue mucho trabajo sin embargo, lo logramos y estuvo genial. Fue en ese entonces cuando mencione que se necesitaban tener dos: la asociación ACT con enfoque en los proyectos y el comité Pride el cual se enfocaría solo en Pride ya que su crecimiento era muy fuerte.”

llevan a cabo en diferentes ciudades de Estados Unidos y Canada. Aquí en Puerto Vallarta, Vallarta Pride no presenta cada evento asociado con las festividades de la semana. “Pride como marca es como un paraguas donde nos concentramos en su promoción” menciono, “y como una promoción internacional y nacional no es barata. Tratamos de trabajar con las diferentes organizaciones, festivales de películas, fiestas, ferias de salud y eventos públicos. Lo que producimos como Vallarta Pride es un desfile y este año nos presentaremos en el “Farmer´s Market” que será en la tarde en el parque Lazaro Cardenas.”

Con ese grado de descentralización, aparenta ser que la organización lucha para enfatizar su valor con la comunidad de negocios que por lo general se encuentran compitiendo por el turista y local. “Se está volviendo complicado porque muchos negocios nos comentan que ya tienen su mercado y no ven el valor de apoyar a Pride,” nos mencionó. “Lo que siempre les digo, y lo hago público, es que esto es algo más grande que eso. Esto es más grande que lo que entra en tu bolsillo. Esto es para la comunidad, para su visibilidad. Esto es educación, y la educación no tiene precio. Esto, por nuestra experiencia, es lo que hemos encontrado”.

Al ser un festival cultural, hemos tratado de obtener fondos del gobierno local y federal asi como del estado, sin embargo, no hemos podido” agrego Sánchez. “Ellos ayudan con la

promoción y medios de comunicación para cubrir el evento, pero en realidad lo difícil es cubrir los gastos. Por el momento estamos tratando de averiguar qué es lo que funcionara.

Sentimos que aún no hay nada, que no hay solución para esto. Esto puede ser un punto crítico para el festival ya que si no encontramos fondos, ¿Cómo se podrá llevar acabo?”

En cuanto a ese año, el presidente Sánchez se encuentra optimista.

“Actualmente Pride está trayendo a más de 20,000 personas para la semana,” nos comenta.

“Tú ves el movimiento. Es un crecimiento que trae negocio para todos. Esto automáticamente reactiva la economía. Los bares se encuentran llenos así como los restaurantes.” Nos reporta que en su mayoría, los asistentes a Vallarta Pride son nacionales en un 70%.

“El desfile siempre sobresale,” nos mencionó. “Me gusta la fiesta de la cuadra por los temas que los diferentes negocios tienen.

La competencia Drag también sobresale.

Es muy divertida. Estoy emocionado por la feria del “Farmer’s Market” con la actividad que llevaremos a cabo. En mi punto de vista, esta vez todo sobresaldrá incluyendo las presentaciones dentro del festival del cine.

Esta es la primera vez que tendremos un concierto para el público con Lorena Herrera.

Este será un concierto para toda la comunidad no solo para la comunidad LGBT dentro del Teatro Vallarta. Esto, sin lugar a duda, será algo que sobresaldrá.

In the daytime he’s based in Zona Romantica engaging concierges at local hotels on behalf of a couple restaurants, promoting their menu and ambience. In the evening he travels to Nuevo Vallarta as part of a group of performers employed by various vacation resorts and it is up there where he gets to dance. But as Neto tells the story, it can be exhausting.

“At some of the resorts, there are three sets,” he said. “The first performers are musicians, and then dancers, and then acrobats, and then another artist. That’s one set. And then again, the musicians, the dancers… three sets. It takes a long time.”

“We have to be there at 6pm because the first set is a Mexican traditional show. And then we need to add the face paint because the next set is the Pre-Hispanic show. And then we need to take a shower because the next set is the Mexican traditional show again. I arrive at 6pm but I don’t leave until 1 in the morning. That’s every Sunday. Just Sunday. Every other day we have our time is 6:30 and we finish the show at 11 or 11:30.”

The two styles of dance Ernesto performs are called Mexican traditional, which is sort of self-explanatory, and Pre-Hispanic. That is the one which requires the application of body paint and a wardrobe similar to what you see on our cover.

As a favor to us, and as acknowledgement of this month’s Pride celebration, he adjusted the colors of paint across his chest to match those of the rainbow flag. Born and raised in Tepic, he told me that nothing exists similar to the events scheduled here this month for Vallarta Pride. “There is no pride festival in Tepic,” he said. “There is a parade, but no festival. We have just a nightclub. Just one LGBT club there.”

“The Pre-Hispanic show is hard,” he said. “I jump, I run, all the time. So it’s like 45 minutes dancing one by one, and it’s hard. So on the day off, it’s just sleep or go to the beach, something like that.”

Ernesto hadn’t considered himself the sort of person you’d find on the cover of a magazine before we approached him last month. A day before we took these photos I sent him an email with confirmation of the photographer’s studio location and time we should meet. He replied, “I’m ready for tomorrow.

I feel nervous.”

I said, “Don’t be nervous. It will all be fine.”

On the day we met, I sent a reminder. He said, “I’m nervous but I’m ready!”

Yet from the moment he arrived and through the afternoon, it was as though he’d done this his entire life.

We needed three sets of photos, each of which required increased physical investment on his part. First, we captured the photo on the previous page. Second, we moved to the kitchen where–thank God–he didn’t flinch when we asked him to wear just an apron and hold a birthday cake. (You’ll have to wait for the Out & About Nashville June print issue to see that one!) And finally we moved on to the cover of this magazine. It required self-application of body paint, which the photographer and I figured would take a greater amount of time than Ernesto ultimately needed. As he explained to me, he brings a lifetime of experience to create these looks.

“I started dancing when I was seven years old at home with my mom,” he told me. “And then in high school and college, university, everywhere, all the time I was in a dance group. Traditional Mexican dance.” His first visit to Vallarta was as a university student. In order to graduate with a degree in tourism, he needed experience working in the industry. He discovered a lively entertainment scene here, one that can accommodate exactly the style of dance in which he excels, and so Puerto Vallarta seemed a logical place to plant roots upon graduation.

So for the past few years he has balanced two careers. Next month his dance group will travel to Europe–his first opportunity to travel off the continent–for 45 days where he’ll perform both the Mexican traditional as well as the Pre-Hispanic dances for an international crowd.

But the tables will be turned slightly. This time, before and after the show he gets to play tourist in their country.

rnesto Romero, nuestro modelo de portada de Orgullo Gay Mayo actualmente tiene dos trabajos aquí en Puerto Vallarta.

Durante el día, se encuentra como conserje en hoteles locales, dando información de un par de restaurantes, promoviendo su menú y ambiente. Por las tardes él viaja a Nuevo Vallarta como parte de un grupo dentro de un equipo de entretenimiento contratado por varios hoteles y es ahí donde le toca bailar.

Pero como Neto cuenta su historia, puede ser agotador.

“En algunos hoteles, hay hasta tres shows,” nos comentó. “El primer show es de músicos y después los bailarines, seguido por los acróbatas y otro artista. Ese es un show. Y nuevamente, los músicos, bailarines…tres veces. Suele tomar mucho tiempo.”

“Tenemos que estar ahí a las 6pm ya que el primer show es un tradicional show mexicano.

Y después nos tenemos que pasar a maquillar ya que el siguiente show es uno Pre-hispánico.

Después nos tenemos que dar un baño ya que nuevamente, volvemos a presentar el show

mexicano. Yo llego a las 6pm y me voy hasta la 1 de la mañana. Esto es cada domingo. Solo los domingos. Cada otro día nuestro show empieza a las 6:30 y terminamos entre 11 y 11:30.”

Los dos estilos de baile que Ernesto realiza se llaman tradicional mexicano, el cual se explica por sí solo, y el pre-hispánico. Este último es el que requiere la aplicación de pintura al cuerpo y vestimenta parecido al que se ve en nuestra portada.

Como favor a nosotros, y como reconocimiento a la celebración Pride de este mes, ajusto los colores de su pintura en el pecho para combinarlo con los de la bandera del arcoíris. Nació y creció en Tepic y me comento que no existe nada similar a los eventos agendados este mes para Vallarta Pride. “No hay un festival parecido en Tepic,” nos comentó.

“Hay un desfile mas no un festival. Tenemos un antro. Solo un Antro LGBT.” “El show pre-hispánico es dif ícil”, nos comentó. “Brinco y corro todo el tiempo.

Son como 45 minutos de baile cada uno, y se vuelve dif ícil. Así que, en mi día libre, trato de dormir o ir a la playa, o algo por el estilo”.

Ernesto no se consideraba el tipo de persona que se encuentra en la portada de una revista previo a que nosotros lo contactáramos. Un día antes de que se tomaran estas fotos, le envié un correo con la confirmación de la ubicación del estudio donde se tomarían las fotos, así como el horario a lo cual él nos contestó “estoy listo para mañana y me siento nervioso”.

A lo que le conteste, “No te sientas nervioso. Todo saldrá bien.”

El día que nos conocimos le envié un recordatorio. Él dijo “Estoy nervioso pero listo”.

Sin embargo, desde que llego, y durante toda la tarde parecía como si hubiera hecho esto toda su vida.

Necesitábamos un set de tres fotos, y cada vez involucraba más actividad f ísica de su parte. Primero, capturamos las fotos que ven en esta página. Segundo, nos cambiamos a la cocina, donde gracias a Dios, no se negó a solo usar un mandil mientras detenía un pastel.

Y finalmente nos cambiamos a la portada de esta revista. Para esta foto, se requirió de la aplicación de pintura al cuerpo para lo cual tanto el fotógrafo como yo asumimos tomaría más tiempo del que en realidad nos tomó.

Como me lo explico, él cuenta con mucha experiencia para crear estos looks.

“Empecé a bailar cuando tenía solo siete años, en la casa con mi mama” el me comento.

“Y después en la preparatoria y la universidad.

Yo bailaba en todos lados a todas horas, dentro de un grupo de baile. Este grupo era de un baile tradicional mexicano.” Su primera visita a Puerto Vallarta fue como un estudiante de universidad. Para poder graduarse de la carrera de turismo, primero necesitaba experiencia trabajando en la industria. Aquí fue donde el descubrió un escenario lleno de vida el cual se podría acomodar exactamente al tipo de baile que el lleva acabo, y así fue como Puerto Vallarta se convirtió en el lugar lógico para cambiarse después de su graduación.

Durante los últimos años, él ha balanceado sus dos carreras. El siguiente mes su grupo de baile viajara a Europa-su primera oportunidad para viajar fuera del país-durante 45 días donde presentaran ambos, su baile tradicional, así como su baile pre-hispánico para un público internacional.

Y así es como se cambió la jugada un poco.

Esta vez, antes y después del show el será el turista en su país.

HECTOR BETANCOURT is the Ambassador of Vallarta Pride 2018

he organizers of Vallarta Pride have elected to honor community organizer and social justice defender Hector Betancourt as this year’s Ambassador of Vallarta Pride. It is an honor in recognition of his tireless work on issues of concern to the LGBT community of Puerto Vallarta. As head of the LGBT Vallarta Colectivo, Betancourt works to achieve an inclusive destiny, where there is equality, non-discrimination and respect for the human rights of all.

“For me it is a great honor and I feel that I do not deserve it,” Betancourt said. “I accept it with humility and making a great commitment to continue working for the LGBT community, with more enthusiasm than I have done to date.

It gives me more courage to continue in the defense of the rights of the LGBT population.”

Armando Sanchez, the current president of ACT LGBT, enthusiastically endorsed his organization’s selection of Betancourt.

“Hector, he’s been here a lifetime,” he said. “He’s been an activist and also he’s been in politics. So he knows how things work. He’s maintained that he’s been there in spite of the challenges, in spite of the same community not supporting or not thinking big changes are needed, he’s maintained his course, and that’s why when we evaluated the candidates we thought he needed to be recognized.”

“He’s very direct,” Sanchez added. “And that has made changes in the community so we value that. He initiated same-sex marriage in Jalisco. He pushed it and we supported it, but it was him that started that pressure with the government. The connections with Guadalajara and Mexico City that he has, it’s very important because it helped to make the change.”

The organizers of Vallarta Pride wish to recognize Betancourt’s achievements of the team he leads, such as equal marriage, the gender identity law, the promotion of a gay men’s football team and currently the initiative for the creation of the Regulation to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination in the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta, being undoubtedly a core part of the social advance so that we all have the same rights regardless of labels.

“Para mí es un gran honor y siento que no me lo merezco,” nos comentó Betancourt.

“Acepto esto con toda humildad con gran compromiso de continuar trabajando con la comunidad LGBT, con más entusiasmo que nunca. Me da más motivación para continuar defendiendo los derechos de la población LGBT”.

Armando Sánchez, el actual presidente de ACT LGBT, apoya con entusiasmo la decisión que tomo la organización de apoyar a Betancourt.

“Hector ha estado aquí mucho tiempo,” nos comentó. “Él ha sido un activista y ha participado en la política. Él sabe cómo funcionan las cosas. Él ha mencionado que ha estado ahí a pesar de los retos, a pesar de que la misma comunidad no ha apoyado o respaldado los grandes cambios.

Él ha mantenido su curso y por ese motivo, al momento de evaluar a los candidatos tomamos la decisión de reconocerlo.” “Él es muy directo,” Sánchez agrego. “Esto ha creado muchos cambios en la comunidad y nosotros valoramos esto. El inicio el matrimonio del mismo sexo en Jalisco. Él lo empujo y nosotros lo apoyamos, pero fue el quien llevo la iniciativa al gobierno. Los contactos que tiene con Guadalajara y México son muy importantes porque han apoyado a estos cambios.”

Los organizadores de Vallarta Pride quieren reconocer los logros de Betancourt así como del equipo que dirige, incluyendo los de la igualdad de derechos en el matrimonio, la ley de identidad de género, la promoción de un equipo de futbol americano gay y la actual iniciativa para la creación de una regularización para prevenir y eliminar la discriminación en el municipio de Puerto Vallarta, siendo sin duda un avance social de que todos tenemos los mismos derechos, sin ningún tipo de etiqueta.

LORENA HERRERA: a Trailblazer for Equality

I

f you grew up in Mexico or surrounded by Latin American culture, then you certainly know who Lorena Herrera is, and why she has been so warmly embraced by the LGBT community.

At age 51, actress and singer Lorena Herrera remains a sex symbol, recognized by her curves, long blonde hair, expressive grey eyes and honest smile, though you don’t want to mess with her.

Her acting career started in Mexican movies(about 56 so far) and telenovelas a little more than 30 years ago. Her presence on the screen is powerful and undeniable so even in supporting roles she stole the spotlight. We like seeing her in villain roles maybe because we know in real life she is not a submissive, quiet, walk-over-me kind of woman.

Her singing started in 1996 and has taken off and consolidated more during the last decade. Her music aims to please people on the dance floor and her videos are a treat for many a gay man (and straight girls, why not?). Check out the video of her new single “Tócame” and you’ll know what I mean.

Many can sing and many can act, but on top of that it’s her essence that makes us relate to her. If you watch her interviews you will see a sassy, feisty advocate for the community.

Ready to defend and support us like a lioness on her back. To show this kind of appreciation these days is common, easy, and a great marketing tool, in fact, however the love and respect she’s shown for us goes as far back as her career. Back to a time when homosexuality was a lot more taboo, a sin, something people wouldn’t talk about openly, let alone support.

Aside from defending her loyal fans, she has had to defend herself.

Thirty ago being a woman and having a strong opinion wasn’t a good nor easy thing. Feeling comfortable on your own skin and claiming your sensuality labeled you not in a very good way. But there she was, a strong force of nature against machismo, against social rules and stigmas.

Letting everyone know that women didn’t have to be weak. They had a choice. But only they could take it.

Soon the time will come when more women will appreciate this.

SO WHEN YOU SEE LORENA HERRERA LEADING THIS YEAR’S GAY PRIDE IN PV YOU SHOULD KNOW SHE HAS EARNED THAT PLACE. SHE IS NOT LESBIAN, BUT SHE CERTAINLY IS ONE OF US BY HER OWN CHOICE. SHE WALKED THE PATH FOR US AND CONTINUES TO DO SO, NOW WITH US in a condescending, insulting manner. As I said, you don’t mess with her. Recently she was asked about rumors of her having to sleep her way to the top. I thought hell was about to freeze and there would be blood, and for sure not hers. Instead, she kept her calm, answered that she hadn’t, with patience and respect for the reporter. She managed to dismantle whatever not-so-hidden agenda with a smile. For a question like this, with the intention and load of a grenade, she came out strong, confident and gracefully in control yet very humble. I believe we all have been in a situation like this, where responding to hate with hate was tempting and our first reaction, yet we can be the better person.

So when you see Lorena Herrera leading this year’s gay pride in PV you should know she has earned that place. She is not lesbian, but she certainly is one of us by her own choice. She walked the path for us and continues to do so, now with us.

i creciste en México o rodeado de cultura Latinoamericana, sin duda alguna, sabes quién es Lorena Herrera y por qué es tan adorada por la Comunidad LGBT. A sus 51 añitos, la actriz y cantante sigue siendo un símbolo sexual, la distinguen sus curvas, su cabellera larga y rubia, sus ojos grises y expresivos, y aunque no la quieres como enemiga, tiene una sonrisa sincera a flor de piel.

Su carrera en la actuación comenzó hace un poco más de 30 años en películas (56 hasta hoy aprox.) y telenovelas mexicanas. Su presencia en la pantalla es imponente e innegable que inclusive en papeles de actriz de reparto se roba la atención. Nos gusta verla de villana, quizá porque sabemos que en la vida real no es sumisa, callada, ni se deja de nadie. Su carrera como cantante comenzó en 1996 y se ha consolidado más en la última década. Crea su música para hacernos bailar en la pista y sus videos son un regalo visual para muchos hombres gays y ¿por qué no? Para chicas heterosexuales también. Ve el video de su ultimo sencillo “Tócame” y verás a que me refiero.

Muchos artistas cantan y actúan, pero además de eso, es su personalidad que nos hace conectarnos con ella. Si ves sus entrevistas observarás a una defensora de la comunidad feroz e implacable. Hoy en día esas muestras de apoyo son muy comunes, fáciles y una buena estrategia de mercadotecnia de hecho, sin embargo el amor y respeto que Lorena ha mostrado por nosotros se remonta hasta el inicio de su carrera. Cuando la homosexualidad era aún más tabú, un pecado, algo de lo que la gente no hablaba, mucho menos apoyaba.

Además de defender a sus leales fans, se ha tenido que defender a sí misma. Hace 30 años ser una mujer con opinión propia no era algo bueno, ni fácil. Sentirse segura de sí misma al exponer su sensualidad le imponía una etiqueta poco agradable. Pero ahí estaba, con la fuerza de la naturaleza en contra del machismo, las normas sociales y los prejuicios. Demostrando que las mujeres no tenían que ser débiles, que tenían una opción que sólo ellas podían tomar. Llegará pronto el día en que más mujeres le agradezcan por esto.

Si necesitas más razones para adorarla, esta es una de mis favoritas: Se dice que los reporteros le tenían miedo, la pensaban dos veces antes de hacer una pregunta con connotación insultante y condecente.

Como les digo, es de armas tomar. Recientemente en una entrevista le preguntaron si llego a la cima acostándose con productores. Ya ardió Troya, pensé, va a haber sangre y no será la de ella. Pero no fue así, mantuvo la calma, contestó que no, con paciencia y respeto hacia el reportero. Desmantelo sus intenciones con una sonrisa. Ante una pregunta así, con la carga e intención de una granada, se mostró fuerte, en control, con gracia, elegancia y mucha humildad. Pienso que todos hemos estado en una situación igual, donde es muy tentador y es el primer instinto responder agresión con agresión. Pero vemos que se puede demostrar lo mejor de nosotros mismos.

Así es que cuando veas a Lorena Herrera este año encabezando la marcha gay en PV sabrás que ese honor se lo ganó a pulso. No es lesbiana, pero definitivamente es una de nosotros por decisión propia.

Ella abrió paso por nosotros, y ahora abre paso con nosotros.

STEVE GRAND Returns to Vallarta

W

ith singer/songwriter Steve Grand, an interviewer can lead the conversation in any number of directions. And I sensed he was bracing for the worst when we spoke on the phone in mid-April regarding his return appearance to Puerto Vallarta in less than six months.

His national career is just five years old, but Grand has achieved a degree of mass success (and community-wide notoriety) that lifelong careers are built upon.

He captured the pop culture zeitgeist in 2013 when the music video to his song, “AllAmerican Boy,” became an overnight viral smash on YouTube. The song, about a gay kid falling for a straight friend, has a country tinge that led many to deem him the “first openly gay male country singer,” a label he spent years refuting. Then came the accusation of slutshaming that Grand hurled toward the online blog Queerty for routinely posting photos of him in various degrees of undress, despite his claim that plenty more artists and creative people post far more racy material without so much as a blink from one of the biggest U.S. LGBT media companies.

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career already,” he said, “and sometimes you have to make mistakes to learn, and that’s been the case for me in a lot of instances, but one thing I’ve really tried to do is always really consistently make my fans know how much I appreciate them for their support.”

This will mark his second full summer and third consecutive year playing the popular resort destination of Provincetown. He’s putting the final touches on a new album that he promises will be released in early summer.

“It is going to be a full album,” he said.

“I’m really just finishing up, putting the final touches on the last two songs. All of the songs have been written and we’re pretty much done recording. Now it’s mostly moving into the final editing stage for those last two and then some still need to be mixed.”

Then there’s his return this month to performances in Puerto Vallarta and Act II

since the six sold out performances back in December and January.

“I really loved Puerto Vallarta,” he said.

“It was a wonderful experience. Playing at Act II was really great, too. Sutton Lee Seymore was performing there at the time and she’s really awesome. We got to hang out in the dressing room and just laugh and have fun.“ “I do love coming to Puerto Vallarta even after just one time of being there.”

In fact, it is the intimacy of the Act II performance space that Steve Grand prefers. “I feel like I can make it more personal for the fans and I really actually make a point to make eye contact with everyone I can see,” he said. “Of course, with the lights that’s not really everyone but it’s easier to kind of read and control and to play to a smaller room just for me personally. I feel like my music comes across better that way and it comes across better also from what audience members have said in the past, like they prefer seeing me live, that I really am able to do justice to the songs in a different way, in a way that may be a little more delicate and raw.”

It’s here where it all comes back to the fans again.

on un cantautor como Steve Grand, la conversación dentro de una entrevista puede tomar cualquier dirección. Yo tenía el presentimiento que él esperaba lo pero cuando platicamos por teléfono a mediados de abril sobre su regreso a Puerto Vallarta en menos de seis meses.

Su carrera nacional lleva solo 5 años, sin embargo, Grand ha logrado un sorprendente éxito (y reconocimiento dentro de la comunidad) con el cual se construyen carreras que duran toda la vida.

El capto la cultura pop zeitgeist en el 2013 cuando el video musical para su canción “AllAmerican Boy,” se convirtió en un éxito viral en YouTube. La canción la cual se trata de un muchacho gay que se enamora de su amigo heterosexual, tiene un toque country que llevo a muchos a llamarlo como el “primer cantante de música country,” una etiqueta que el mismo paso años evitando. Después de eso llego su ataque en contra del blog Queerty por dejarlo ver como un “hombre fácil” después de que esta página mostrara fotos de el en diferentes poses semi desnudo, a pesar de su comentario defendiendo estas fotos alegando que muchos artistas han posado en fotos más comprometedoras pasando desapercibidos por esta página la cual es una de las más grandes paginas LGBT en línea en Estados Unidos.

“Ya he cometido muchos errores en mi carrera” comento “y muchas veces tienes que

cometer errores para aprender, y este ha sido mi caso muchas veces. Sin embargo, una de las cosas que siempre he tratado de hacer es dejarle saber a mis fans cuanto aprecio su apoyo.”

Este marcara su segundo verano completo y tercer año tocando en el popular centro turístico de Provincetown. Actualmente se encuentra en la etapa final de su nuevo álbum el cual promete se lanzará a principios del verano.

“Este será un álbum completo,” el comento.

“Estoy a punto de terminarlo, agregándole los detalles finales a las últimas dos canciones.

Todas las canciones han sido escritas y ya hemos grabado casi en su totalidad todas las canciones. Actualmente nos encontramos en la etapa final de la edición para las últimas dos canciones y en la mezcla final del resto de ellas.”

También está su regreso a Puerto Vallarta este mes en Act II después de las seis presentaciones que se agotaron en su totalidad en diciembre y enero.

“Realmente amo Puerto Vallarta,” nos comentó. “Fue una experiencia maravillosa.

Presentarme en Act II fue algo realmente genial. Sutton Lee Seymore se presentó al mismo tiempo que yo, y ella es maravillosa.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de pasar tiempo juntos en el camerino, y todo fue lleno de risas y diversión.”

“A pesar de que solamente he estado en Puerto Vallarta solo una vez, amo pasar tiempo ahí.”

De hecho, es el tipo de escenario intimo que ofrece Act II lo que Steve Grand realmente prefiere. “Me siento como si puedo llevar a cabo una presentación más personal para mis fans, dándome la oportunidad de tener contacto visual con todos ellos,” nos comentó.

“Lógicamente con las luces del escenario quizás no puedo ver a todos sin embargo es mucho más fácil tener el control en este tipo de escenarios. Para mi punto de vista y basándome en los comentarios de mis fans, la música se transmite mejor en este tipo de lugares, ya que puedo conectarme con ellos de una manera más directa y delicada” Y aquí es una vez más cuando todo es para los fans.

“Yo realmente amo darles el todo a mis fans,” nos comentó, “y ellos han sido una bendición, apoyándome, asistiendo a mis presentaciones, comprando mi música, escuchando la música, comprando mi mercancía. Todo esto me ha dado la oportunidad de sentirme muy afortunado.

RETHINKING OUR VIEW OF GOD’S WAITING ROOM

I

still remember the first time I walked into Twin Peaks bar at Castro and Market Street in San Francisco at 2010. Many refer to it as "God’s Waiting Room." I walked in with my friend Pecesito and I was the only one under 65 years old (sorry, I just outed your age, Pecesito). At that time, calling it God’s Waiting Room seemed funny to me. But if I had known what I know now, and if I had experienced what I’ve experienced until now, I would have taken a moment to look around and tried to keep those guys faces in my memory. Instead, I downed two or three Long Island Iced Teas. It was my first time trying them and they tasted delicious and innocuous. Forty minutes later I was on my knees throwing up on the sidewalk between Twin peaks and the Castro Theater.

I wish back then I realized how those gentlemen at this bar had shaped our lives

and it seems unfair, to say the least, that we diminish them to old men waiting to die.

But let’s remember that they fought society to break through conventionalisms so we could hold hands now on the street; I don’t know about you but I certainly appreciate that freedom. They started movements, riots, protests, which eventually were the foundation for our contemporary right to marriage. They endured being called names and being humiliated so that we wouldn’t have to be, at least not to that degree. Some of them gave up true love and married someone of the opposite sex, sacrificing their nature, or they divorced and started to come out, proud and strong, first broken, then whole again.

The lucky ones that did not succumb in the 80’s, buried dozens of loved ones, and many became guinea pigs for HIV/AIDS preventing and treating meds that nowadays make our lives easier.

We must realize that this list can go on.

At the end of the day, we owe so much the older man at Twin Peaks in San Fransisco, The Caliph in San Diego, Julious in New York and so many other bars frequented by older men all over the world. Let’s remember those guys every time we sashay into a coffee shop in summer with that floral scarf around our neck (or bag) and oversized glasses and expect to be treated and served with respect. Let’s remember those guys every time we enjoy our sexuality knowing about PrEP or antiretroviral meds. Let’s silently thank those guys when we walk down the aisle with our loved one, get married and obtain spousal benefits. Let’s remember the battles they fought, some were won, some were lost: to society, to the legal system, to AIDS, to hate.

Let’s give a meaning to this Pride. Let’s celebrate, honor and appreciate those guys, engage them, acknowledge them, they’ll be at Reinas, Garbo, and Frida's bars. They’ll be walking down the street and at the farmer's market, invisible to youth, each one of them with a profound story. Let’s buy them a drink and thank them for our freedom and the happiness that emanates from it. This Pride let’s go beyond the sexy outfits, makeup, feathers, recreational drugs and party with capital P. We are a lucky generation to be able to look history right in the eyes and be able to appreciate the legacy these generations left for us and for the generations to come.

REDEFINIENDO LA SALA DE ESPERA DE DIOS por Erick Martinez Fierro

ún recuerdo la primera vez que entré al bar Twin Peaks en la intersección de Castro y Market, en San Francisco California en el 2010. Muchos le dicen “La sala de espera de Dios”. Fui con mi amigo Pecesito y yo era el único menor de 65(perdón Pecesito, delaté tu edad). En ese momento referirse al bar como “La sala de espera de Dios” me pareció divertido. Pero si hubiera sabido lo que sé hoy, y si hubiera vivido lo que he vivido hasta ahora, hubiera tomado un momento, para mirar a mi alrededor, para tratar de recordar los rostros de esos hombres en mi memoria. Pero en lugar de eso, me tomé dos o tres Long Island Ice Tea. Era la primera vez que los probaba y sabían deliciosos e inicuos. Cuarenta minutos después vomitaba de rodillas en la banqueta entre el bar y el teatro Castro.

Les debemos la libertad que damos por sentada. Recordemos a esos hombres cada vez que entramos a una cafetería en verano con una bufanda floreada alrededor del cuello(o la bolsa), lentes gigantes y esperamos un trato respetuoso. Recordemos esos hombres cuando disfrutemos nuestra sexualidad contando con PreP y antivirales. Agradezcámosles en silencio cuando vamos camino al altar, nos casemos y obtengamos todos los beneficios maritales.

Recordemos las batallas que lucharon, unas se ganaron y unas se perdieron: contra la sociedad, el sistema legal, SIDA y odio.

Démosle un significado a esta Marcha del Orgullo, el significado que debe tener. Celebremos, honoremos, involucremos y reconozcamos a estos hombres. Estarán en Reynas, Garbos y Frida’s. Estarán caminando por las calles, en el Farmer’s Market, desapercibidos para los jóvenes, cada uno con una historia profunda. Invitémosles un trago y agradezcámosles por nuestra libertad y la felicidad que de ella emana. Esta Marcha del Orgullo vallamos más allá de las vestimentas provocativas, maquillaje, brillantina, drogas recreacionales y fiesta intensa. Tenemos suerte de poder ver la historia directo en sus ojos y admirar el legado que dejaron para nosotros y para generaciones futuras. “La sala de espera de Dios” me parece inapropiado e insultante, pero definitivamente esos hombres se han ganado su lugar en el cielo, quizá más que cualquiera que todos nosotros.

Desearía que en ese entonces yo supiera cómo es que esos caballeros en el bar le dieron forma a nuestras vidas y es injusto, por decir lo menos, que los degrademos a hombres viejos y moribundos.

Recordemos que ellos lucharon convencionalismos sociales para que nosotros nos tomemos de las manos en las calles: no sé tú, pero yo definitivamente aprecio esta libertad. Ellos comenzaron movimientos, marchas, protestas que eventualmente fueron las bases para legalizar el matrimonio gay. Soportaron insultos y humillaciones para que nosotros no tuviéramos que hacerlo, al menos no en ese nivel. Muchos renunciaron al amor verdadero y se casaron con el sexo opuesto en contra de su naturaleza, algunos se divorciaron y salieron del closet con orgullo y fuerza, primero desgarrados, luego plenos. Los afortunados que no sucumbieron en los 80’s enterraron a docenas de seres amados y muchos fueron conejillos de India para medicamentos de prevención y tratamiento de VIH/SIDA que hoy en día hacen nuestra vida más fácil.

Si conociéramos nuestra historia como comunidad gay, nos daríamos cuenta que la lista sigue. El final del día, le debemos mucho MAY 2018
