HENRY HO

enry is a native of Los Angeles who moved to Puerto Vallarta in the fall of 2016. He works remotely doing marketing consulting and graphic design for his clients in the U.S. When he's not working, he can usually be found relaxing on the beach or having a fun night out on the town. He's a foodie and is always on the search for the next great restaurant to obsess over. He's a fun person and always looking to meet more people, so don't be afraid to say hello if you see him walking around town!

What is on your bucket list?

Being afraid of heights, one of my bucket list items is to go parasailing on Los Muertos Beach. Maybe one day I'll get over my fear and actually do it!

What is your signature cocktail?

Oh, I love mojitos, and restaurants here in Puerto Vallarta seem to have that perfected. But my favorite has got to be the “Cosmojito” at La Leche. Just like it sounds, it is a mix between a cosmopolitan and a mojito, and it is fantastic.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?

The nacho-flavored Doritos here are different from the ones in the States. I've been known to go through a whole bag while watching Netflix on a rainy summer night.

What would your autobiography be called?

I think I would call it “How Henry Got His Life Back.” Growing up in Los Angeles, I had a fairly carefree childhood, but as I grew older,

Al tenerle miedo a las alturas, algo que está en mi lista de deseos es realizar el parasailing en la playa los muertos. Quizás algún día le gane a mis miedos y me atreva a hacerlo. ¿Cuál es tu coctel favorito?

Amo los mojitos, y los restaurantes aquí en Puerto Vallarta al parecer han perfeccionado esa bebida. Pero una de mis bebidas favoritas tiene que ser el “Cosmojito” en La Leche. Así como suena, es una mezcla entre un Cosmopolitan y un mojito.

Es fantástico.

there were a lot of pressures to do well, find a high-paying job, be able to afford a house, find someone to marry... there was a checklist of things society expected from me to have and achieve. Life there was all about accumulation of things.

And of course, being in L.A. with the high cost of living, I spent most of my time working and constantly stressed about money. One day, while on vacation here in Puerto Vallarta, I wondered what it would be like to live here, and decided I was going to take a chance and do it. That was the best decision of my life. My life is so much simpler.

I'm so much more relaxed. I don't stress about things like I used to.

Now I truly feel like I am living my life.

What movie title best describes your life?

The Breakfast Club. Not only did I grow up loving that movie, I think it teaches us to look past our own prejudices and learn to relate to people who are different from ourselves. I strive for diversity in my life and love learning from others. It's fascinating for me to learn about other peoples' lives, their childhood, where they came from, and comparing them to my own life.

What always cheers you up when you think about it?

I live in paradise! Every day I come across tourists who are having a fantastic time here in Puerto Vallarta and they're sad to have to leave, but I get to stay!

Los doritos con sabor a nacho tienen un sabor diferente a los que se venden en Estados Unidos. Soy conocido por acabarme una bolsa completa mientras veo Netflix en una tarde de verano lluviosa. ¿Cómo se llamaría tu biograf ía?

Creo que la llamaríamos “Como Henry tomo control de su vida.” Creciendo en Los Ángeles, tuve una niñez relativamente tranquila, pero al ir creciendo, la presión por tener éxito, encontrar un trabajo bien pagado, poder comprar una casa, encontrar alguien con quien casarme… había una lista de cosas que la sociedad esperaba yo realizara y lograra. La vida ahí se volvió una acumulación de cosas por lograr.

Y por supuesto, al estar en L.A. con el alto costo de vivienda, me la pasaba casi todo

el tiempo trabajando y estresado por el dinero.

Un día, mientras vacacionaba aquí en Puerto Vallarta, empecé a pensar sobre como seria vivir aquí, así que decidí tomar un riesgo y lo hice. Esa fue sin duda, la mejor decisión que he hecho en mi vida. Mi vida es mucho mas sencilla. Estoy mas relajado. No me estreso por las cosas que solia estresarme. Hoy realmente siento que estoy viviendo mi vida. ¿Qué título de que película describe tu vida?

“The breakfast club; El club de los cinco” No solo crecí amando esa película, pero también creo que nos enseña a superar nuestros prejuicios y aprender a relacionarnos con personas que son diferentes a nosotros.

Yo siempre busco la diversidad en mi vida y amo aprender de los demás. Es fascinante para mi aprender sobre la vida de otras personas, su niñez, de donde son, y compararlos a mi propia vida. ¿Qué es algo en lo que piensas que te contenta? ¡Vivo en un paraíso! ¡Cada día me cruzo con turistas que están teniendo un tiempo fantástico aquí en Puerto Vallarta y se encuentran tristes al momento de partir, pero yo tengo el placer de quedarme!

AN INDEFATIGABLE AND GENEROUS COMMUNITY LEADER, TOM SWALE

“was exactly what Vallarta needed at the time he was here”

ene Mendosa arguably ran and sweat harder than any of the queens who participated in this year’s Drag Derby.

The annual event is a highlight for Vallarta Pride revelers, a fundraiser and community-builder presented by the Amapas Neighborhood Association. It’s also the brainchild of Tom Swale — the president of the association who passed away in late May — and, as a volunteer, Gene visibly worked to ensure the event went off without a hitch, just as Tom had done. His commitment that day is perhaps the single greatest evidence of Tom’s influence in this community.

Six years ago, Gene had to be talked into joining the Amapas Neighborhood Association.

The owner of Fusion Gourmet restaurant, he was an obvious prospective member.

“I was reluctant to get into the association because I know it’s a lot of work,” he said, “and you can’t keep people happy. Some people are going to be mad at you for some reason. Not everyone can get their way.”

He credits Tom with singlehandedly revitalizing a moribund organization and inciting in him the interest and energy to become a better supporter of the community.

“First of all, he changed the entire mechanics of the neighborhood association because before that it was like a club,” he said. “He turned it into an association that is very prominent in the city. We have a direct line to the mayor, the chief of police. Anything that happens, now the local government will listen to us, and it’s due to the six years relationship with them. We did everything from buying a police car when there were no police cars around, new streets, new lighting. At the same time the activism kept some developers from building these monstrosities, and we were successful. They

could have been 12 stories instead of five or six.

Tom was pivotal in all of this. He was the engine behind the neighborhood association. He made us work really, really hard.”

“Sometimes I have more work to do for the association than for my business,” he added. “Tom came with all that energy. He was a great leader.”

In a few short and productive years, the neighborhood of Amapas has grown and the results prove it. According to Mendosa, policing was an issue here. Burglars and robberies were common and increased pressure from the association created a more visible presence from law enforcement. And even the relationship between the police and visitors to the area evolved. “We really worked with the city,” he said, “because actually the police were harassing a lot of tourists, you know, shaking them down for money. And we put a stop to that. That’s decreased a lot.”

The association, under Tom’s direction, rewired the light posts on Hwy 200 and just last year invested in building a sidewalk along that busy highway. On Calle Pulpito work has begun to widen and revamp the street, to include moving all the utility services (telephone and power lines) underground. The association has partnered with the city to fill potholes in the area, and rebuild a dilapidated staircase leading from the highway to the beach near Mantamar.

Tom’s interest in the Amapas Neighborhood Association, according to Gene, came about after he and his partner Carl were robbed at gunpoint in their home shortly after moving to Vallarta. The two had gone to Costco that day and were followed home. They worked with police to identify the perpetrators and eventually recouped everything that was stolen. It created in the couple a resolve to work in the community to ensure situations like that one wouldn’t happen again.

“He was a great example of the behaviour of how to give back to the community that

you’ve chosen to live in,” said Julie Guerrero, a real estate agent and co-proprietor of No Way José restaurant.

“I would watch him,” she added, “the way he could create a cohesive group among people who had lived here much longer than he had, and actually keep people focused on the goal. That was one thing that I always noticed about him. It’s not personal. Things here can get super personal, quickly. With Tom, it was always about focusing on what needed to be done. He was exactly what Vallarta needed at the time that he was here, doing what he was doing.”

Tracy Parks, the owner of Incanto cabaret and piano bar, agrees. “He had a way of getting people to do what he needed them to do without it becoming a lot of struggle. People would actually show up when he called a meeting.”

“When he had his Amapas Neighborhood Association meetings here at Incanto,” he said, “the last one, over those building ordinances, there must have been 80 people here. And he was running around the room, fielding questions, and saying ‘I’ve got to make sure I get to you,’ because everybody had a little different opinion and he was not doing the talking. He was doing the listening. Almost all the time. And he knew how to pull the talent out of a person. He knew how to find out what each person was good at and to make it shine, rather than just saying, ‘I need you to do this.’”

Gene Mendosa realized in Tom a respect that led to a friendship. “I always felt like he was more like an older brother, a father figure, but at the same time we would kick back, have a margarita, and talk about who I was dating or what was going on, what we did when we were young, just laugh about it.”

“He was a great combination between a boss, a leader, a friend, family member who was always there for you, and he always had your back and that’s why so many people miss him and so many people are sorry that he’s gone.”

El evento anual es un momento de realce para los aficionados de Vallarta Pride, recaudador de fondos y promotor comunitario presentado por la Asociación de Vecindarios de Amapas. Hace 6 años, se habló con Gene para invitarlo a unirse a la Asociación de Vecindarios de Amapas. El propietario del Restaurante Fusión Gourmet, era obviamente un posible miembro. “Yo estaba renuente a ingresar a la Asociación, debido a que sé que es mucho trabajo”, él dijo, “Y no puedes mantener a toda la gente contenta.

Algunas personas estarán enojadas contigo por alguna razón. No todos pueden salirse con la suya”. Él le otorga los créditos a Tom que sin ayuda revitalizó una organización moribunda e incitó en él mismo, el interés y la energía para convertirse en un mejor defensor de la comunidad.

“Antes que todo, él cambió enteramente la mecánica de la Asociación de Vecinos, pues antes era como un club”, dijo. “Él la convirtió en una Asociación sumamente destacada en la ciudad. Nosotros tenemos una línea directa con el alcalde y el jefe de la policía. Cualquier cosa que pueda pasar, el gobierno ahora nos escuchará, esto se debe a la relación de seis años con ellos. Hicimos de todo, desde comprar un carro para la policía, cuando no había estos alrededor, así como también nuevas calles e iluminaciones. Al mismo tiempo el activismo detuvo que los desarrolladores construyeran estas monstruosidades y fuimos exitosos.

Podrían haber sido 12 historias en lugar de 5 o 6. Tomas fue esencial en todo esto. Él fue el motor detrás de la Asociación de Vecindarios.

Realmente él nos hizo trabajar, muy duro”.

“Algunas veces tengo más trabajo que hacer para la Asociación que para mi negocio”, el agregó. “Tom vino con toda esa energía. Fue un gran líder”.

En unos pocos pero productivos años, el Vecindario de Amapas ha crecido y los resultados lo prueban. Según Mendosa, la vigilancia era un problema aquí. Los ladrones y los robos eran comunes, pero un incremento en la presión por parte de la Asociación, creó una visible presencia de las fuerzas del orden público. Incluso la relación entre la policía y los visitantes del área creció. “Nosotros realmente trabajamos con la ciudad”, él dijo, “porque la policía acosaba a muchos turistas, tú sabes, bajándoles dinero. Y tuvimos que poner un alto a eso. Esto ha ido disminuyendo mucho.”

La Asociación, bajo la dirección de Tom, reconectó los postes de luz de la carretera 200, y justamente el año pasado, invirtió en la construcción de una banqueta a lo largo de esta tan transitada carretera. En la calle Púlpito el trabajo se ha comenzado, para ensanchar y modernizar la calle, incluyendo mover al subterráneo todos los servicios de utilidad (telefonía y líneas eléctricas). La Asociación se ha aliado con la ciudad para rellenar los baches en el área, así como también reconstruir una escalera arruinada que conduce desde la carretera a la playa cerca de Mantamar.

El interés de Tom en la Asociación de Vecindarios de Amapas, de acuerdo con Gene, surge después de que su compañero Carl fuera asaltado a punta de pistola en su propia casa poco tiempo de mudarse a Puerto Vallarta. Los dos fueron a Costco ese día y fueron seguidos hasta su casa. Ellos trabajaron con la policía para identificar a los perpetradores y eventualmente recuperaron todo aquello que les había sido robado. Esto creó en la pareja una resolución para trabajar en la comunidad para asegurarse de que situaciones como esas no pasaran nuevamente. Él fue un gran ejemplo por su comportamiento, sobre como retribuir a la comunidad a la cual haz elegido vivir”, dijo Julie Guerrero, agente de bienes raíces y co-propietaria de No Way José Restaurant.

Gene Mendosa dio cuenta de un respeto en Tom que condujo a una amistad. “Siempre sentí que él era más que un hermano mayor, una figura de padre, pero al mismo tiempo nos relajaríamos con una margarita, y hablaríamos de con quién había tenido alguna cita o que pasaba en mi vida, las cosas que hicimos cuando éramos jóvenes, solo reírnos acerca de todo eso. “Él fue una gran combinación entre un jefe, líder, amigo, miembro de familia que siempre estaría ahí para ti, y eso por eso que muchas personas lo extrañan y porque muchas personas lamentan tanto su partida”.

NO LONGER IS THERE AN ASSUMPTION THAT ALL TOURIST-FACING BUSINESSES WILL CLOSE FOR NEARLY HALF A YEAR. The demographics of the visitors to Vallarta are changing too.

Gustavo Silva Lacroix recently graduated with a degree in Hotel Management. He studied the changes of the visitor landscape in this city and discovered that the age of the average visitor has dropped significantly.

“We realized there are more young adult people traveling to Puerto Vallarta instead of retired people,” he said. “That’s what they believed in the past, that the city was more for retired people, that Vallarta is the best place in the world to retire. But we realized that almost 25 percent of people who answered the survey, it was from the ages of 42 to 57, and no more than 65 years old.”

And he reports too that, though the number of individual LGBTidentified visitors is less than our straight counterparts, the average amount spent by LGBT tourists is significantly higher.

Among Mexican nationals, Paul Crist believes the growing middle class will only contribute to the growth of tourism in this city, particularly during the summer months, and that it behooves businesses to invest in bilingual communication.

“I think the summer is much busier with tourism than it used to be, for sure,” he said. “I think some of that is the economy improving over the last few years. I think it has to do with the growth of the middle class in Mexico. A lot of the factories that are being built in cities like Mexico City and Guadalajara, these are booming cities and the Mexican middle class in those cities is growing. They have disposable income and, even in the summer, they know it’s going to be hot and humid and a bit rainy here, and they’re okay with that.”

“I pretty much keep my marketing bilingual and of interest to both the English speaking and Spanish speaking market all year round,” he added. “About a month ago there was something I posted on Facebook and a Spanish comment from someone was, I’ll say this in English, ‘I really appreciate that your marketing is always bilingual or in Spanish because so many businesses in Puerto Vallarta advertise in English

e’re not supposed to say ‘high season’ and ‘low season’ anymore, right?

The terms are fraught with meaning, of course. For many a business owner in Vallarta, ‘high season’ is defined by boom time excess in the winter months of November through May, when Americans and Canadians flood the city in active avoidance of their own home locales.

‘Low season,’ then, is the opposite: a proprietor will many times spend all the revenue that was earned through the winter in order to keep the bills paid, counting the days until November rolls around and the business cycle can begin again at square one.

Over the past few years, though, the conversation in this city has shifted. No longer is there an assumption that all tourist-facing businesses will close for nearly half a year. At the same time, the drop in tourist revenue remains precipitous, rendering the all-out avoidance of the terms ‘high’ and ‘low season’ more ambitious than anything.

But there are a few organizations that have managed to keep their door open all year. When the economic life’s breath of a city is derived from international visitors, business owners can choose to resign themselves to the assumption of a perpetuating annual low period or they can search for opportunity. More and more organizations here are opting for the latter.

What if we started to call the summer months ‘Value Season?’

Paul Crist has embraced the term. The owner of Hotel Mercurio, he’s weathered the highs and lows for sixteen years now. Yes, it has a Big Mac vibe to it, and its most visible proponents so far appear to be eateries. Who among us hasn’t logged on to Facebook and found an ad for the Joe Jack’s Fish Shack “Burger Wednesday” special, or the Café Roma “everything $20 pesos” menu?

There is a caveat, though. According to Crist, you can sell the idea of value to potential visitors, but the quality of your product must remain consistent.

“You can’t offer less just because you’re getting paid less,” he said.

“You set a certain standard and that is what you offer at whatever price you’re getting.” For the public, visitors to the city, we can’t assume they know anything of high or low season. All they will recognize is good quality and bad quality.

“Invariably, in this day and age,” he said, “somebody who was here in the winter and raved about the hotel… if I were to not offer the same breakfast in the summer, or reduce staff and attend to the rooms every other day, for example, that same guy is going to come back in June and he’ll be like, ‘wow, things have really gone downhill at Hotel Mercurio. It’s not the same.’”

Too, Crist thinks of his staff as family, some of whom have worked at Mercurio the entire 16 years he’s owned the hotel. He doesn’t want to cut staff or services because the money is tight.

“I have a responsibility to my staff,” he said. “I see business as my being responsible to my clients, my staff, my suppliers who need to get paid so they can pay their staff, and of course my social responsibility of paying taxes and all that, but first and foremost it’s my clients and my staff. Those are my two responsibilities that I never lose sight of. I can’t just lay people off in the summer. I can’t do it.”

Across the colonia at Incanto, proprietor Tracy Parks experimented with a summer run last year and it was met with success. In fact, as the summer stretched toward August and September and the plan to close for a month or more drew near, he told me that it was the staff who elected to keep the doors open. According to Parks, maintaining and supporting the interests of a local customer base can sustain a business in the summer months and also attract a tourist crowd when they arrive.

“If I can create an atmosphere that attracts a bilingual crowd or a Mexican national crowd with incredible music, like at our open mic night…” he began. “The voices that are popping into town now, the talent, if I can keep those locals here in the summer, then everybody else will want to be here because that’s where the locals are. Anytime I’ve gone on vacation I always try to figure out, ‘where do the local people go?’ and hopefully we’re creating that.”

José Luis Casillas is the owner and fashion designer at ky moda independiente (and who is profiled elsewhere in this issue). His family owns and operates the Mini Super Amapas convenience shop located next to Fusion Gourmet restaurant and across the street from Hotel Tropicana. Casillas takes the argument a step further.

He’s identified three ways that businesses—sometimes unwittingly—self-select their clientele.

“The first is price,” he said. “If you have $100 peso cocktails, you will have no local customers. But if they can spend $100 over the course of an evening at your business, then they might be willing to come back every week.”

“The second is product,” he continued. “A good business owner knows which products are popular during high season and what to stock for low season. The third way businesses self-select their clientele is with service. If you prefer tourists over locals, they will know and act accordingly.”

Is ‘Value Season,’ then, the best alternative? It acknowledges that prices go down for everything from burgers to hotel rooms, prices that amid high season are designed for an American consumer. Beyond that, according to Mercurio’s Crist, it’s a good way to introduce new people to Vallarta, many of whom will come back regardless of the season and spend more.

Tracy Parks at Incanto would agree. “All the venues have their strategy for attracting a year-round crowd,” he said. “My strategy is this: create valuable programming as much as possible and keep it air conditioned and friendly and make it as comfortable for people to come here as possible.”

“I figure, if I want to be here, maybe other people will, too,” he added. “And so far, I really like being here. I like being in this building.

I like being on this part of town. It’s kind of a new market for me. I’m getting to know so many great people by being open all summer. We become really good friends because we have more time to talk, more time to relax.”

e supone que no debemos decir más “temporada alta” y “temporada baja”, ¿cierto?

Los términos están llenos de significado, por supuesto. Para muchos dueños de negocios en Vallarta, “temporada alta” se define como el boom de exceso temporal en los meses de invierno, que comprenden de Noviembre hasta Mayo, que es cuando los Americanos y Canadienses inundad la ciudad, evitando activamente sus propios lugares de procedencia.

“La baja temporada”, es entonces lo contrario: un propietario gastará muchas veces, todos los ingresos obtenidos en la temporada de invierno para poder cubrir las cuentas a pagar lo que resta del año, contando los días hasta Noviembre para que el ciclo del negocio pueda comenzar de nuevamente.

Con el paso de algunos años, sin embargo, la conversación en esta ciudad ha cambiado. No existe más la suposición de que todas las empresas de turismo cerrarán por al menos medio año. Al mismo tiempo, la caída los ingresos del turismo continua siendo precipitada, evitando así totalmente los términos “alta” y “baja temporada” siendo más ambicioso que nada.

Pero existen algunas organizaciones que se han mantenido con las puertas abiertas todo el año. Cuando la vida económica respira, es derivado de los visitantes internacionales, los dueños de los negocios pueden elegir en resignarse a un periodo anual bajo perpetuado o ellos pueden buscar por una oportunidad. Más y más organizaciones han estado optando por esta última. ¿Y qué tal si comenzamos a llamar a los meses de verano “temporada de valor”?

Él además reporta que, aunque el número de visitantes identificados como personas LGBT en menor que nuestros contrapartes heterosexuales, el promedio que gastan los turistas LGBT es significativamente más alto.

Entre los nacionales mexicanos, Paul Crist cree que la creciente clase media solo contribuirá al crecimiento del turismo en esta ciudad, particularmente durante los meses de verano, y que corresponde a las empresas en invertir en comunicación bilingüe.

“Creo que el verano está mucho más ocupado con el turismo de los que usualmente era, es seguro,” dijo. “Creo que la economía ha mejorado con el paso de los últimos años”. Creo que tiene que ver con el crecimiento de la clase media en México. Muchas de las fábricas que se están construyendo en las ciudades como Ciudad de México y Guadalajara, estas son ciudades en auge y la clase media mexicana en estas ciudades está creciendo, tienen ingresos disponibles e, incluso en el verano, ellos saben aquí que serán muy caluroso y húmedo y un poco lluvioso, y ellos están de acuerdo con eso”.

“Yo prácticamente mantengo mi marketing bilingüe y de interés tanto en el mercado de habla Inglesa como en el mercado de habla Hispana todo el año”, el agregó. “Hace como un mes atrás posteé algo en Facebook y un Hispano hablante comentó, lo diré en Inglés, “Yo realmente aprecio que tu marketing siempre sea bilingüe o en Español porque muchos negocios en Puerto Vallarta solamente anuncian en Inglés” y pienso que eso es un gran error, que muchas empresas no reconozcan y persigan al mercado mexicano”.

José Luis Casillas es el diseñador de modas y dueño de Ky Moda independiente (y quién se describe en otro momento en esta publicación). Su familia es posee y opera el Mini Super Amapas, tienda de conveniencia localizado a un lado del Restaurante Fusión Gourmet cruzando la calle del Hotel Tropicana. Casillas toma la palabra para dar un paso más allá. Él identificó tres formas en que algunas veces las empresas inconscientemente, seleccionan a sus clientes.

“El primero es el precio”, dijo. “Si tienes cocteles de $100 pesos, no tendrás clientes locales. Pero si están dispuestos en gastar $100 pesos en el transcurso de una noche en tu negocio, entonces posiblemente estarán dispuestos a volver cada semana”.

“El segundo es el producto”, el continuó. “Un buen dueño de negocio conoce cada uno de sus productos y cuáles son los populares durante temporada alta y cuales conservar para temporada baja. Y la tercera forma en que las empresas propiamente eligen a su clientela es con el servicio. Si tú prefieres turistas sobre los locales, ellos sabrán y actuarán acorde a ello”. ¿Es entonces “el valor de la temporada” la mejor alternativa? Se reconoce que los precios bajan para todo, desde hamburguesas hasta cuartos de hoteles, los precios a media temporada están diseñados para el consumidor Americano. Más allá de eso, de acuerdo a Crist de Mercurio´s, es una buena forma de presentar nueva gente a Vallarta, muchos de ellos que regresarán independientemente de la temporada y gastarán más.

Tracy Parks de Incanto estaría de acuerdo. “Todos los lugares tienen su estrategia para atraer a una multitud todo el año,” él dijo. “Mi estrategia es esta. Crear una programación valiosa como sea posible, mantenerla con aire acondicionado, ambiente amigable y hacerlo lo más cómodo para que la gente venga aquí lo más posible”.

“Me imagino, si quiero estar aquí, quizás otras personas también”, el agregó. “Y hasta ahora, a mí realmente me gusta estar aquí. Me gusta estar en este edificio. Me gusta estar en esta parte de la ciudad.

Es como un tipo de nuevo mercado para mí. Estoy conociendo a tantas personas geniales por estar abierto todo el verano. Nos hemos vuelto muy buenos amigos, porque tenemos más tiempo para hablar, y más tiempo para relajarnos”.

Paul Crist ha adoptado este término. El dueño del Hotel Mercurio, ha resistido las altas y bajas temporadas durante 16 años.

Sí, tiene una sensación Bic Mac, y sus más visibles defensores hasta ahora parecen ser restaurantes. ¿Quién de nosotros no ha iniciado en Facebook y ha encontrado un anuncio para el especial “Hamburguesa de Miércoles” en Joe Jack´s Fish Shack, o en Café Roma en menú “todo a $20 pesos”?

Sin embargo, hay una advertencia de por medio. De acuerdo a Crist, puedes vender la idea de valor a visitantes potenciales, pero la calidad del producto debe ser constante.

“Tú puedes no puedes ofrecer menos solo porque ellos están pagando menos”, él dijo.

“Tú estableces cierto estándar y eso es lo que tú ofreces a cualquier precio que obtengas”.

Para el público, los visitantes en la ciudad, tenemos que asumir que ellos no conocen nada acerca de la alta y baja temporada.

Todos ellos reconocerán si es buena o mala calidad.

“Invalorablemente, en estos días y año”, dijo, “alguien que estuvo aquí en invierno y habló con entusiasmo acerca del hotel… si no le ofrezco el mismo desayuno en verano, o reduzco al personal y atención a cuartos cada dos días, por ejemplo, el mismo tipo volverá en Junio y el pensará: “wow, algunas cosas realmente han ido en decadencia en el Hotel Mercurio”. Ya no es lo mismo”.

Además, Crist piensa en su personal como una familia, algunos de los cuales han trabajado en el Hotel Mercurio los todos los 16 años que él ha sido dueño del hotel. Él no quiere hacer corte de personal o servicios porque el dinero es escaso.

“Tengo una responsabilidad hacia mis colaboradores”, él dijo.

“Veo este negocio como una responsabilidad para con mis clientes, mis trabajadores, mis proveedores que necesitan que les paguen para poder pagar a su personal, y por supuesto mi responsabilidad social de pagar impuesto y todo lo referente, pero ante todo son mis clientes y mi personal. Esas son mis dos responsabilidades las cuales nunca pierdo de vista. No puedo solamente despedir gente en el verano. No puedo hacerlo”.

Al otro lado de la colonia en Incanto, el propietario Tracy Parks experimentó con una corrida de verano el año pasado y fue recibida con éxito. De hecho, como el verano se alargó hasta Agosto y Septiembre y el plan de cerrar por un mes o más se acercó, él me dijo que fue el persona el que eligió mantener las puertas abiertas. Según Parks, manteniendo y soportando los intereses del consumidor local se puede sostener el negocio en los meses de verano así como también atraer a la multitud de turistas cuando llegan.

“Si puedo crear una atmósfera que atraiga a una multitud bilingüe o a una multitud nacional Mexicana con increíble música, como en nuestra noche de micrófono abierto…”. El comenzó. “Las voces que están reventando en la ciudad ahora, si puedo mantener estos locales aquí en verano, entonces todos querrán estar aquí porque es donde los locales están. Cada vez que he ido de vacaciones siempre trato de descubrir, “¿A dónde van los locales? Y con suerte nosotros lo estamos creando.

La demograf ía de los visitantes a Vallarta está también cambiando.

Gustavo Silva Lacroix recién graduado de la carrera de Administración Hotelera. Él estudió los cambios de los paisajes de los visitantes en esta ciudad y descubrió que la edad del visitante ha disminuido significativamente.

“Nos dimos cuenta que hay más personas adultas jóvenes”, él dijo. “Eso es lo que creían en el pasado, que la ciudad era solamente para personas jubilados, que Vallarta es el mejor lugar en el mundo para retirarse”. Pero nos dimos cuenta que casi el 25 por ciento de las personas que contestaron la encuesta, tenían edades entre los 42 y los 57 años, y no más de 65 años de edad.”

C

uando José Luis Casillas regresó a su ciudad natal Puerto Vallarta después de una década en Guadalajara, él no tenía idea de que su larga carrera estaba a punto de estallar y materializarse.

De hecho, él pensó que era casi imposible desarrollar una vocación en el diseño de modas en esta ciudad. Pero ahora, siete años después, Ky moda independiente, un negocio que él dirige junto con su socio un diseñador de joyas y accesorios, Manolo Becker, mantienen una lista de espera de cliente de al menos tres meses y prácticamente no tiene competencia.

Frustrado por un esfuerzo de diseño que comenzaba a estancarse, Casillas dejó un comercio minorista que fundó él en Guadalajara (cuando aún era estudiante universitario) cuando él decidió tomarse un año y volver a Vallarta. Él tuvo que decidir durante este tiempo si continuaría en el diseño de modas o iniciar una carrera nueva completamente.

“Pensé que o cambiaría de carrera y abandonaría esto, o me iría de México,” dijo. “Los productos que yo manufacturo no son una necesidad y cuando tú vives en un país como este, donde la gente está preocupada acerca de lo que irán a comer, de donde saldrá el dinero para pagar las cuentas, tener un asombroso vestido veces no está en la lista de prioridades”.

José Luis y Manolo mantienen una tienda de venta al por menor y un estudio en la Calle Roma colonia Díaz Ordaz.

Los conocí en ese lugar a última hora de la mañana a mediados de Junio, antes de su descanso ritual de la 1pm para comer. Los vestidos de novia se alinean a la ventana frente a la ventana dando hacia la calle, una clara indicación del cliente objetivo in esta comunidad donde la marca está alojada, y dentro hay elaborados accesorios, a veces exagerados, de los deseos que quizás has visto en los bailarines go-go en la reciente Fiesta Blanca en Palm Springs.

Durante nuestra conversación de dos horas, dos mujeres llegaron, por separado, para que les midieran los vestidos que habían ordenado especialmente. Luego otro llegó cuando concluimos la entrevista, un planificador de bodas, inmaculadamente elegante con un perfume que me hizo desmayarme, y su humilde escriba.

Entonces en resume, fue: Mujeres heterosexuals — 3 Drag Queens — 0 En todo caso, Ky moda independiente ha creado un nombre por sí misma en la comunidad LGBT por sus espléndidos diseños que los dos propietarios han creado para personas como Mama Tits, Chi Chi Rones y Jo Anna, y la Diva Divina. Y que se remonta a la apertura del Act II. Pero nos estamos adelantando a nosotros mismos.

“De todas formas”, dijo José Luis. “Dije que me tomaría un año libre. Volveré a Vallarta. Tuve un asunto familiar por ahí. Parecía lo más razonable por hacer. Quiero abrir una tienda de abarrotes, como mi mamá tiene. Ella tiene una tienda de abarrotes (el Mini Super Amapas tienda de conveniencia) entonces dije, quiero hacer lo mismo”.

El plan duró muy poco.

“Recuerdo en la tienda de abarrotes,” dijo “Tenía ahí una pequeña máquina de coser portátil, y mientras vendía cocas de dieta y pan, yo estaba cosiendo. Tenía un maniquí y aún tengo cosas que hice durante ese tiempo. Recuerdo que esa chica, esta chica alemana, vino una vez y dijo “oh me encanta lo que estás cosiendo. ¿Podrías coser algo para mí? Yo estabas así como “sí, pero tú solo estarás aquí por dos días. Tú te irás. Ella dijo, está bien. Envíalo”.

“Ella quería un vestido”, él dijo. “Al mismo tiempo eran $5,000 o $6,000 pesos por un vestido. Yo estaba pensando, ella no va a pagarle todo ese dinero a un extraño. Pero ella lo hizo. Entonces hice el vestido. Y lo envié a Alemania. Una vez que estaba cosiendo en la tienda de abarrotes, una revista local, Maxwell, vino a verme, y me dijo “vamos a publicar un resumen de moda. ¿Hay algo que te gustaría exhibir? Y lo hice.

José Luis se apoyó en el monitor de la computadora en el escritorio de la sala mientras él hablaba. Él recorrió una selección de fotos en su perfil de Facebook. “Esto”, dijo él, señalando un vestido en la pantalla, “¡fue hecho mientras vendía cocas y pan!”.

Al mismo tiempo, Act II se estaba abriendo y José Luis interpretó el papel de Zach para el musical inaugural de la casa de juegos. Chorus Line. “Recuerdo que Danny (Mininni) tenía un amigo que trabajaba con él, Terry, dijo. “Terry estaba a cargo de los disfraces, y me preguntó: “Sé que coses. ¿Puedes hacerlos?”. Así que hicimos todos los trajes para Chorus Line y a través de Chorus Line y Act II conocí a John Whelan e hice muchos vestidos para Turleen. Y así fue como conocí a la señorita Concepción.

“Ellos son los más increíbles diseñadores de vestuario en México.”

Kevin Levesque me dijo después. Más ampliamente conocido como Señorita Concepción, él ha trabajado con Casillas y Becker desde los días de Chorus Line y Act II. “Cuando entré a su estudio por primera vez él me dio un gran abrazo e instantáneamente me preguntaron qué cosas asombrosas podemos hacer. Me senté y comencé a describir un vestido para mí”.

José Luis lo recuerda un poco diferente, aunque la admiración mutua es indiscutible.

“Al principio, comencé con él con mordiscos y pliegues de sus atuendos”, dijo. “Un cierre se rompió, ¿puedes arreglarlo?, ¡cosas como esas! Pero ahora hago todo el espectáculo.

“Realmente son las personas más hermosas y talentosas con las que he trabajado,” dijo Levesque.

“Desde entonces, hemos hecho hasta ahora 32 vestidos y continuaré trabajando con ellos por siempre”.

“Nos encanta trabaja con Señorita Concepción”, dijo José Luis.

“Es muy divertido. Él siempre tiene ideas y es muy creativo. Todo un desaf ío. Él dirá, “Quiero un vestido con 6 brazos” y luego el otro, quiero una falda can-can con todas estas cosas debajo y en capas. Cosas como esas, que siempre es divertido de trabajar”.

Y así comenzó una relación con casi todos los artistas de renombre en esta ciudad. “Conocimos a Chi Chi y Jo Anna, hicimos cosas para ellos”, dijo. “También conocimos a Kim Kuzma, le hicimos cosas. Y a Diva Divine, la conozco desde siempre, y le hemos hecho cosas a ella también. Y a Mom Tits ahora, y estamos en el proceso ahora para construir un vestido para Hedda Lettuce.”

Para una carrera de diseño que se acerca a dos décadas, José Luis mira hacia atrás y ve la evolución de su estilo y estética. “El arte y el diseño no son lo mismo”, dijo. “El arte existe solo por la razón de ser, porque expresa una emoción, eso es todo. El diseño tiene que tener una función. Si no funciona, no es un buen diseño. Cuando me di cuenta de que no solo quería coser yo mismo, quiero coser para mis clientes, creo que aprendí mucho”.

“Otra cosa que aprendí de este negocio es que no es una carrera rápida”, agregó. “Es un maratón, no un carrera. Tienes que gustarte porque haces largas horas. No siempre es bonito, porque las personas toman su imagen propia muy importante y siempre tienes que estar preparado. Y también debes saber tipos de cuerpos, trucos, y siempre encuentras la manera de hacerlo mejor. Así que definitivamente debes amarlo”.

El amor del diseñador por esta ciudad permanece intacto, a pesar las reservas al principio, a su regreso, que no sostendría una carrera como la suya.

“Vallarta es un lugar increíble”, dijo. “Tenemos la oportunidad de conocer gente muy buena de todo el mundo. Una cosa increíble de Puerto Vallarta es que conoces a la gente en su mejor momento. ¿Por qué?, Porque están de vacaciones, están relajados, pueden hablar.

Estoy seguro de que si conozco a alguien súper grande en su trabajo, en su entorno, tendría que hacer una cita y pedirle tiempo para mostrar mis cosas. Aquí, la gente está en su sano juicio. Eso es lo más poderoso de Vallarta, la gente está más relajada y dispuesta a hablar y cambiar ideas y explorar”.

FASHION DESIGNER JOSÉ LUIS CASILLAS REDEFINES STYLE ACROSS ALL OF VALLARTA How a plan to relax and recharge birthed a career designing gowns for international drag queens and local brides

W

hen José Luis Casillas returned to his hometown in Puerto Vallarta after a decade in Guadalajara, he had no idea his long-simmering career was about to fully materialize.

In fact, he figured it nearly impossible to develop a vocation in fashion design in this city. But now, seven years later, ky moda independiente — a business he runs with his partner and jewelry/accessories designer, Manolo Becker — maintains a customer wait list of nearly three months and enjoys virtually no competition.

Frustrated by a design endeavor that had begun to stagnate, Casillas left a retail business he founded in Guadalajara (while still a university student) when he chose to take a year off and return to Vallarta. He was to decide during that time whether to continue in fashion design or begin a new career entirely.

“I thought either I change careers and drop this, or move out of Mexico,” he said.

“The products that I manufacture are not a necessity and when you live in a country like this, where people are concerned about what they’re going to eat, or where the next money to pay the bills are going to come from, having an awesome dress sometimes is not on top of the list.”

José Luis and Manolo maintain a storefront retail operation and work studio on Calle Roma in colonia Diaz Ordaz. I met them at that location late one morning in mid-June, prior to their ritual 1pm break for lunch. Wedding gowns line the window facing the street — a clear indication of the target customer in the community where the brand is housed — and inside there are elaborate, sometimes overthe-top accessories, the likes of which you may have seen on go-go dancers at a recent White Party here or in Palm Springs.

During our two-hour long conversation, two women arrived, separately, for fittings of gowns they had special ordered. Yet another arrived as we concluded the interview, a wedding planner, immaculately stylish with perfume that made me, your humble scribe, swoon. So in summary, it was: Straight women — 3 Drag Queens — 0 If anything, ky moda independiente has made a name for itself in the LGBT community for the lavish designs the two proprietors have created for the likes of Mama Tits, Chi Chi Rones and Jo Anna, and Diva Divine. And it can all be traced back to the opening of Act II. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

“So anyway,” said José Luis. “I said I’m gonna take a year off. I’m gonna go back to Vallarta. I had a family thing going on there. It seemed the reasonable thing to do. I want to open a grocery store, like my mom does. She has a grocery store [the Mini Super Amapas convenience store] so I said I want to do the same thing.” The plan was short-lived.

“I remember the grocery store,” he said.

“I had a small portable sewing machine there, and in between selling Diet Coke and bread, I was sewing. I had a mannequin and I still have stuff that I made during that time. I remember this girl, this German girl, came in once and she said ‘oh I love what you’re sewing. Could you sew something for me?’ I was like ‘yeah, but you’re only here for two days. You’re going to leave.’ She said, ‘it’s ok. Send it.’”

“She wanted a gown,” he said. “At that time it was $5000 or $6000 pesos for a dress. I was thinking, she’s not going to pay that money to a stranger. But she did. So I made the dress.

I sent it to Germany. While I was sewing in the grocery store, a local magazine, Maxwell, came to me and said, ‘we’re going to publish a fashion spread. Is there something that you’d like to showcase?’ I did.”

José Luis leaned in toward the computer monitor at a desk in the showroom as he talked. He scrolled through a selection of photos on his Facebook profile. “This,” he said, pointing to a dress on the screen, “was made between selling Cokes and bread!”

At around the same time, Act II was opening and José Luis played the role of Zach for the playhouse’s inaugural musical, A Chorus Line. “I remember that Danny [Mininni] had a friend working with him, Terry,” he said. “Terry was in charge of costumes, and Terry asked me, ‘I know that you sew. Can you do them?’ So we made all the costumes for A Chorus Line and through A Chorus Line and Act II I met John Whelan and I made a lot of dresses for Turleen. And that’s where I met Miss Conception.”

“They are the most incredible costume designers in Mexico,” Kevin Levesque told

me later. More widely recognized as Miss Conception, he has worked with Casillas and Becker since the days of A Chorus Line at Act II. “When I walked in their studio for the first time they gave me a big hug and instantly asked me what amazing things we can make. Sat me down and started sketching out a dress for me.”

José Luis recalls it a little differently, though the mutual admiration is undisputable.

“In the beginning with him I started with nips and tucks of his outfits,” he said. “‘A zipper broke, can you fix it?’ Stuff like that! But now I do the entire show.”

“They truly are the most beautiful and talented people I've ever worked with,” said Levesque. “From then to now, we have made 32 dresses and I will continue to work with them forever.”

“We love working with Miss Conception,” José Luis said. “It’s so much fun. He always has ideas and he is very creative. Everything is a challenge. He will say, ‘I want a dress with six arms’ and then the other one, I want a can-can skirt with all of these layers down. Stuff like that, which is always fun to work.”

And so began a relationship with nearly all the big name performers in this city. “We met Chi Chi and Jo Anna, we made stuff for them,” he said. “Also we met Kim Kuzma, made stuff for her. And Diva Divine, I’ve known her since forever, and we’ve made stuff for her as well.

And Mama Tits now, and we’re in the process now to build a dress for Hedda Lettuce.”

For a design career that is closing in on two decades, José Luis looks back and sees the evolution of his style and aesthetic. “Art and design are not the same thing,” he said. “Art exists only for the reason of being, because it expresses an emotion, that’s it. Design has to have a function. If it doesn’t work, it’s not a good design. When I realized that I don’t want to just sew for myself, I want to sew for my clients, I think that I learned a lot.”

“Something else that I’ve learned from this business is that it’s not a speedy career,” he added. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You have to like what you do because it is long hours. It’s not always pretty, because people take their self-image very important and you always have to be prepared. And also you have to know types of bodies, tricks, and always find the way to make it better. So you definitely have to love it.”

The designer’s love for this city remains intact, despite reservations at first, upon his return, that it wouldn’t sustain a career like his.

“Vallarta is an awesome place,” he said.

“We have the opportunity to meet very cool people from all over the world. An awesome thing about Puerto Vallarta is that you know people at their best. Why? Because they are on holidays, they’re relaxed, they can talk. I’m sure if I met someone super huge at their job, in their environment, I would have to make an appointment and beg for time to show my stuff. Here, people are in their right mind to do it. That’s the powerful thing about Vallarta, people are more relaxed, and willing to talk and change ideas and explore.”

egina was born in Mexico City 48 years ago and started working a variety of jobs at a young age but what she has always liked the most was working in anything related with restaurants and beverages. In 2000, she opened “The Palm” on Olas Altas. After spending the last nine years working in Toronto, Regina was happy to return to Vallarta last fall to join the team at El Arrayán.
