Welcome to the Fall 2020 digital only issue. Our largest issue ever with more than 100 pages!

This issue is special in many ways, the first and foremost is that we gave away all of the ads that you see, and absorbed the cost of producing this issue as just a small way for O&APV to show our support for the local businesses that have suffered so badly from the ongoing pandemic. We LOVE Puerto Vallarta and we LOVE the many businesses that make it such a special place. So please take a few moments as you read through this issue to look at the businesses that would love to have your support.

I love the fall season. Each new season brings changes, and that’s what we focus on in this issue – changes. Lives have changed, along with old favorite businesses closing and new ones coming out necessity with the pandemic.

Cheyenne Parker, our cover story, is an international model and reality TV star and a new Puerto Vallarta businessman. The pandemic brough him to escape to Puerto Vallarta and he was inspired to tap into his network to merge his international friend list with those businesses in Puerto Vallarta.

The LGBTQ community has always stepped up to help those in need, and the pandemic has shown that even in a time of crisis, our community responds. Starting on page 66, we talk about the monetary donations that have poured into Puerto Vallarta to help support the locals. The generosity is inspiring!

Most of us know someone who has been impacted by Covid-19. It has truly changed so many lives. Hug those close to you and tell them how much they mean to you.

Fall Digital Issue One of the reasons that led Mexican-American entrepreneur Jet de la Isla to open a Facebook group titled “Puerto Vallarta Gays: Everything gay you need or want to know” was to offer a platform with useful information aimed at Puerto Vallarta LGBTQ newcomers to adapt to their new home and help them start up a business. To him, it was important to do so since he would have appreciated having a resource like this when he arrived in the city four years ago: a social network that would have allowed him to make new connections with local people easily.

Jet is originally from Texas but moved to Puerto Vallarta after living some time in Spain and traveling around the world. He has visited more than 57 countries, he is bilingual and has strong interpersonal relationship skills that have enabled him to prosper in Puerto Vallarta. He currently has two successful businesses: Jet Private Boat Tours and Jet’s Gay Hostel.

In 2018, De la Isla came up with the idea of opening a Facebook group for the local gay community, which today has 7.7 K members, becoming the biggest group of its kind in the city. Jet announced this milestone through a Facebook post that reads as follows:

“Today is a big day for me! After 2 years of close moderating, curating and approving thousands of members we are now officially the biggest gay group in PV! Thanks to everyone for being a part of this fabulous community!”

Jet explains that around 40% of the members are from the United States, 30% from Canada and most of the rest are Mexican nationals. However, there are also people from Europe and Africa joining the group. The topics shared within the community are very varied and include questions and recommendations of establishments, invitations to meetings and events to meet new people, non-profit initiatives, businesses, collaborations, as well as videos and photographs of the beautiful landscapes of Puerto Vallarta.

“I am happy to see that this platform has also served to help people in need during this Covid-19 crisis. For example, we helped promote an initiative by Hotel Casa Cúpula that consists in raising funds to donate food pantries for low-income people. I hope this continues in the future within the group.

The goal is to bring the gay community of Puerto Vallarta together, tourists and locals ”.

Another initiative Jet undertook to offer orientation to the gay population arriving to the bay was the Puerto Vallarta Map, which features useful and fun LGBTQ references within downtown and the surrounding areas. Click here to watch the video interview he had with O&APV regarding this matter.

Uno de los motivos principales que llevaron al emprendedor mexicoamericano Jet de la Isla a abrir su grupo de Facebook titulado “Puerto Vallarta Gays: Everything gay you need or want to know” (Gays de Puerto Vallarta: Todo lo que necesitas y quieres saber) fue poner al alcance de los integrantes de la comunidad LGBTQ recién llegados a la ciudad información útil para adaptarse a su nuevo hogar y para emprender. Para él, esto era importante pues cuando llegó a Vallarta hace cuatro años, le hubiera gustado tener este tipo de recursos, que además le hubiera permitido hacer conexiones de manera más rápida y usando las plataformas digitales, que se han convertido un medio imprescindible hoy en día.

Jet es originario de Texas y se estableció en la ciudad después de vivir en España y viajar por el mundo entero.

De la Isla ha visitado más de 57 países, es bilingüe y su facilidad para relacionarse le ha permitido prosperar en Puerto Vallarta. Actualmente, cuenta con dos negocios: Jet Private Boat Tours y Jet’s Gay Hostel.

En 2018, se le ocurrió la idea de abrir un grupo de Facebook para la comunidad gay local, mismo que actualmente cuenta con 7.7 K miembros, convirtiéndose en el más grande de su tipo. Fall Digital Issue Jet explica que alrededor del 40% de los miembros del grupo son estadounidenses, 30% canadienses y el resto mayormente mexicanos, sin embargo también se han unido personas de Europa y África. Los temas que se comparten dentro de la comunidad son muy variados e incluyen dudas y recomendaciones de establecimientos, invitaciones a reuniones y eventos para conocer gente nueva, iniciativas sin fines de lucro, negocios, colaboraciones, así como videos y fotografías de los hermosos paisajes de Puerto Vallarta.

“Me alegra ver que esta plataforma ha servido también para ayudar a gente que lo ha necesitado durante esta contingencia por Covid-19. Por ejemplo, compartimos una iniciativa del hotel Casa Cúpula, quienes están recaudando fondos para donar despensas para personas de bajos recursos. Espero que esto continúe en el futuro dentro del grupo.

Mi intención es unir a la comunidad gay de Puerto Vallarta, turistas y locales”.

Otra de las iniciativas emprendidas por Jet para ofrecer orientación a la población gay que llega a la bahía fue el Mapa Gay Puerto Vallarta, en donde muestra referencias e información dentro de El Centro y las zonas circundantes de la ciudad. Edy Sandoval is one of the many members of the LGBTQ community in Puerto Vallarta who lost his job due to the pandemic. He was working in a restaurant when he was forced to close.

So, he had a passion and a hobby of his, baking cakes and other goodies, and he turned it into a new business that he is operating from home, with the help of his family.

Edy's Cakes has been in business for about two months, and the business has been growing steadily.

Edy learned to bake when he lived in Germany as a teenager. He had a friend who taught him. Now the 25-year-old has taken that skill to a new level as an entrepreneur.

"Yes," he said. "It was my hobby and now it's my life."

Edy has another passion in life that has been delayed due to the pandemic. His love of aviation made him study in Mexico City last year to become a pilot, but like many things, COVID-19 has postponed those plans.

Edy's got it covered in fudge cakes, brownies, and even birthday cakes.

Baked candy prices start from $ 200 pesos and include delivery to your home. Edy said you need at least a minimum one day's notice.

“I need to have time to schedule it with the other orders. Everything is tailor-made and made in my house, ”he said.

The quiche is $ 350 pesos, the cheesecakes start at $ 300 pesos and go up, depending on the options you select with it. Empanadas start at $ 300 pesos as well.

"Business is good," he said. “When we started it was one cake, two cakes, but by the second week, he recovered. Now we are making four cakes a day, up to six or seven.

Edy is a native of Puerto Vallarta and has recently been learning to speak English.

"I have six months of practice with my English," he said.

Edy has a boyfriend and said that everyone in his family supports him.

"It was difficult telling my family that I am gay," he said. “But my family is open. When I told my mother that she was like, 'no problem, what is the problem'.

He said he was relieved to talk to his family.

"I think it helps to be more relaxed and more free," he explained.

Edy Sandoval es uno de los muchos miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ en Puerto Vallarta que perdió su trabajo debido a la pandemia. Estaba trabajando en un restaurante cuando se vio obligado a cerrar.

Entonces, tuvo una pasión y un pasatiempo suyo, hornear pasteles y otras golosinas, y lo convirtió en un nuevo negocio que está operando desde su casa, con la ayuda de su familia.

Edy’s Cakes ha estado operando durante aproximadamente dos meses, y el negocio ha estado creciendo constantemente.

Edy aprendió a hornear cuando vivió en Alemania cuando era adolescente. Tenía un amigo que le enseñó. Ahora, el joven de 25 años ha llevado esa habilidad a un nuevo nivel como emprendedor.

“Sí”, dijo. “Era mi hobby y ahora es mi vida”.

Edy tiene otra pasión en la vida que se ha retrasado debido a la pandemia. Su amor por la aviación lo hizo estudiar el año pasado en la Ciudad de México para convertirse en piloto, pero como muchas cosas, COVID-19 ha pospuesto esos planes.

“People often take back foreign money that they will never use again,” he said. “Even this is a great way for them to donate and help the local community. ‘Every peso counts…

Young local entrepreneur Alexander Avila introduces

La Notte

Firewood pizza inspired by the owner’s summers in Italy and the original techniques practiced in the birthplace of this iconic dish.

22-year-old Alexander Ávila keeps himself busy between his activities as a Gastronomy student at Universidad de la Vera-Cruz in Puerto Vallarta and his managing tasks at his restaurant La Notte (meaning “The Night”, in Italian), a woodfire pizzeria located in Colonia 5 de Diciembre, one block from Playa Camarones. Being part of the local LGBT community, Ávila decided to embark on this project in late 2019 and during the first months, the establishment had a wonderful response from both local and foreign clients. Today, Alexander and his business partners resist the Covid-19 pandemic, adapting to the new normal and elevating their service.

Originally from Michoacán, Ávila is based in Puerto Vallarta since he was 11 years old. Recently, he welcomed us at La Notte, where we could get to know its concept, inspired by the summers Alexander spent in Italy being an adolescent and where he worked at a few traditional pizzerias within the region of the Gulf of Naples and the Ischia Island. Although he felt always curious about cooking, it was here where he took his first steps within this culinary art.

The experience Alexander had in this European country led him to meet true artisans and the techniques they use to create authentic Italian pizza cooked in wood-fired ovens.

“In Italy, this is truly a tradition. To me, it was surprising to see that making pizza was not that easy. For instance, the measures to make the dough are very precise and cooks check the weather forecast and many other factors to determine how to make it. Last summer I was there was 2018 and I got a certification as a pizzaman in a little town near Venice named Caorle.”

At his return to Mexico, Alexander continued working at establishments linked to gastronomy and taking advantage of an unexpected opportunity, he decided to open his own restaurant with his cousin and two friends. “And this is how La Notte was born.”

The menu features a wide variety of wood-fired pizzas with classic ingredients and styles such as Margherita, pepperoni, mushrooms and Quattro Stagioni. You’ll find also other combinations adapted to the clients’ tastes such as shrimp and other seafood, meat, Italian sausage and many more.

“I encourage everyone to try this new experience that keeps the authenticity of Italian pizzas at a place offering a warm and comfortable ambiance. It’s perfect for family, friends, or couples, you all will spend a lovely evening.”

Fall Digital Issue When asked about the difficulties they’ve faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Alexander explained that it was hard when they were forced to close for a few months due to the confinement established by the government this past March, especially because they’ve had a good response from clients.

A month and a half ago, La Notte reopened only for the weekends as a means to adapt to this sanitary crisis.

At the establishment, they have all the measures and protocols endorsed by the authorities such as sanitizer gel and mats, tables that keep a considerable distance from each other and the staff wears face masks all the time. Clients are also required to wear masks when entering. Additionally, Ă vila and his business partners hired the services of a cleaning agency in order to disinfect the facilities of La Notte.

El joven emprendedor Alexander Ávila presenta:

Una pizzeria con horno a la leña inspirada en sus vacaciones de verano en Italia y en las técnicas artesanales practicadas en el lugar de origen de este delicioso platillo.

A sus 22 años, Alexander Ávila se mantiene muy ocupado entre sus actividades como estudiante de Gastronomía en la Universidad de la Vera-Cruz y sus labores dentro de su restaurante La Notte (“La Noche”, en italiano), una pizzería ubicada en la colonia 5 de diciembre, a una cuadra de Playa Camarones. Integrante de la comunidad LGBT de Puerto Vallarta, Ávila decidió emprender este negocio a finales de 2019, teniendo una excelente aceptación por parte tanto del público local como los turistas. Actualmente, el establecimiento se resiste a sucumbir ante la pandemia de Covid-19, adaptándose a esta nueva normalidad y ofreciendo un servicio de calidad.

Originario de Michoacán pero radicado en Puerto Vallarta desde los 11 años, Alexander recientemente nos invitó a conocer el concepto de La Notte, inspirado en sus frecuentes vacaciones de verano en Italia cuando era adolescente. Fue en aquel entonces cuando se inició en el arte culinario, pues aprovechaba para trabajar en algunas pizzerías dentro de la región del Golfo de Nápoles y la Isla de Ischia. Ávila siempre sintió una gran atracción por la cocina y desde corta edad nutrió esta inquietud.

Esta experiencia en el país europeo le permitió conocer verdaderos artesanos y las técnicas para elaborar la auténtica pizza italiana, cocinada en hornos a la leña.

“En Italia es una verdadera tradición. Para mí fue muy sorprendente ver que no era tan sencillo como creía. Por ejemplo, las mediciones para elaborar la masa son muy precisas, los cocineros observan la temperatura y humedad del día y muchos otros parámetros para determinar su elaboración.

El último verano que estuve trabajando allá fue 2018, y fue entonces cuando obtuve una certificación en un pequeño pueblo cerca de Venecia llamado Caorle, que avala a los cocineros que hacemos pizza”.

Fall Digital Issue A su regreso a México, Alexander siguió trabajando en establecimientos ligados a la gastronomía y, aprovechando una oportunidad inesperada, decidió poner su propio negocio.

Explica: “Junto a mi primo y dos amigos decidimos aventurarnos y poner nuestro propio establecimiento. Fue así como surgió La Notte”.

El menú está compuesto por una gran variedad de pizzas al horno con ingredientes y estilos clásicos como margherita, pepperoni, champiñones y 4 quatteo stagioni. Además de otros elementos adaptados a los gustos de los clientes como camarones y otros maríscos, mejillones, carne, salchicha italiana (hecha en el lugar), entre otros.

“Invito a todos a probar esta experiencia auténtica que guarda la autenticidad de las pizzas italianas en una atmósfera cálida y cómoda. Pueden venir en familia, con amigos o en pareja y van a pasar un momento muy agradable”.

Al preguntarle acerca de las dificultades que La Notte ha enfrentado debido a la pandemia por Covid-19, Alexander explicó que fue difícil tener que cerrar durante algunos meses debido al confinamiento establecido por el gobierno el pasado mes de marzo, sobre todo porque desde la aper-

tura de La Notte en noviembre de 2019 habían tenido una muy buena respuesta por parte de los comensales.

Hace aproximadamente mes y medio, La Notte reabrió sus puertas operando únicamente los fines de semana como una manera de adaptarse a la crisis sanitaria.

En el establecimiento, cuentan con todas las medidas de prevención establecidas por las autoridades como entrega de gel antibacterial, tapete desinfectante, mesas separadas y uso de cubrebocas por parte del personal en todo momento. A los clientes también se les exige el uso de cubrebocas antes de ingresar al lugar. Adicionalmente, Ávila y sus socios han contratado los servicios de una agencia especial de limpieza para desinfectar sus instalaciones.

La Notte se ubica en calle Honduras 115 en colonia 5 de diciembre. Actualmente está abierto de viernes a domingo en un horario de 17:00 a 22:00 hrs. Servicio a domicilio a través de Veloz al teléfono (322) 222 0207.

Fall Digital Issue Local Puerto Vallarta entertainers Tonny Kenneth and Luis Villanueva have teamed up to make their first ever album together, “Time Travelers”.

All of the music is original, and the album takes the listen on a trip through time with how music has changed over the last few decades, hence the title, “Decades of Music”. The entire album was recorded in Puerto Vallarta without the use of autotune or vocal tricks “With the pandemic it’s been difficult making a living as entertainers,” Kenneth explained. “We hope all of those lovers of music will support us on this joint album.”

Villanueva added that the album was challenging to record because it was “100 percent throat to mic.”

“We are our own producers, and if one voice or note was slightly out of tune, we would record it all over again,” He said. “We didn’t have the luxury of having any advanced editing after the fact.”

The album is true music from the heart, with each song having a completely different sound. The performers said each song was inspired by music from a different era/decade.

The album was co-produced and vocally directed by Chris Lopez (FB/IG @chrislopezok).

“From 30s to 40s jazz, Motown and Funk, Disco and 90s all the way to Deep House and 2020 style,” Kenneth explained.

“We’ve covered it all.”

The lead single from the album is called “Superstar”.

Kenneth, who in 2013 was the winner of the Panama Karaoke World Championship as a soloist and reached the semifinals in Finland. In 2017 he was crowned ‘Singer of the Year’ at the iPOP Talent Convention in Los Angeles. He’s even composed songs for national artists, including ‘Running’, performed by Panamanian singer Diana Villamonte (La Voz México).

Kenneth arrived in Puerto Vallarta in August 2018 on a short trip. That’s all it took. He knew he needed to move there

Vocalist Luis Villanueva learned to sing Spanish and in English while listening to the greats including, Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Elton John, and many others while being raised by his grandmother in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. She greatly influenced and encouraged him to develop his love of music, and it was unusual if it wasn’t playing somewhere in the house.

Later, singing as a founder of Azteca Chiapas Symphony Orchestra, he further honed his vocal and performance skills.

With more than 15 years of experience in music, Luis, formally educated as an optometrist, he quickly concluded that music was his true calling and he was eager to return to performing. Relocating to Puerto Vallarta in recent years, he competed as a finalist in several local and national singing competitions.

Locally Luis has performed in shows like Juan Gabriel Tribute, Luis & Fernando and Naked Boys Singing!

Covid-19 brought the two performers together, who have teamed up to live stream many performances in an effort to help raise money.

Animadores locales de Puerto Vallarta Tonny Kenneth Luis Villanueva se han unido para hacer su primer álbum juntos, “Time Travellers”.

Toda la música es original, y el álbum lleva a la escucha en un viaje en el tiempo con cómo la música ha cambiado en las últimas décadas, de ahí el título, “Decades of Music”.

Todo el álbum fue grabado en Puerto Vallarta sin el uso de autotune ni trucos vocales.

“Con la pandemia, ha sido difícil ganarse la vida como animadores”, explicó Kenneth. “Esperamos que todos esos amantes de la música nos apoyen en este álbum conjunto”.

Villanueva agregó que el álbum fue difícil de grabar porque era “100 por ciento de garganta a micrófono”.

“Somos nuestros propios productores, y si una voz o nota estaba un poco desafinada, la grabaríamos de nuevo”, dijo.

“No tuvimos el lujo de tener una edición avanzada después del hecho”.

El álbum es verdadera música del corazón, y cada canción tiene un sonido completamente diferente. Los artistas dijeron que cada canción estaba inspirada en música de una época / década diferente.

El álbum fue coproducido y dirigido vocalmente por Chris Lopez (FB / IG @chrislopezok).

Generous Donations Help

Provide Aid for Those in Need More than $300,000 USD ($6,303,045.Mexican pesos) has been raised to help with food and other supplies for Puerto Vallartians who have been hurt with the loss of work due to the pandemic.

Much of the money has been raised on social media platforms including GoFundMe, where a search found many people had set up accounts to help raise money for locals.

Fall Digital Issue Francie Nguyen organized this fundraiser on GoFundMe for the Vallarta Food Bank, and it has raised almost $100,000an additional $100,000 has been raised from it’s webpage.

You can find that fund here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ vallarta-food-bank The Vallarta Food Bank was Created by Jimmy Plouff and Frankie Victoria who converted their Restaurant, Tunnel Road BBQ, into a Food Bank in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A Facebook page was created in late March to keep the community updated on their donations.

“We have received over $200,000 USD in donations since late March, 2020,” Victoria explained. “So far, we have sent out over 45,000 despensas (food packages), which feed about four people per week. We have brought support to places from San Sebastian del Oeste, Cuale, Puerto Vallarta, Chimo, and Quimixto.”

She said that during the month of August they started providing hot food distribution, and are serving about 1,100 people a week.

Local Businesses Bringing New Life to

an Iconic Building

For most people raised in Puerto Vallarta, the three-story building located at Insurgentes 108 in colonia Emiliano Zapata (adjacent to the Río Cuale vehicular bridge), is special and brings back pleasant childhood memories. This site was the home of La Surtidora del Puente, the second branch of the first department store in the city and LANS’ elder sister (LANS stands for La Nueva Surtidora or “The New Surtidora”). Here, you could find the latest trends for clothes, footwear, furniture, and home items in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

The store was owned by the well-known Meza family and went out of business in 2016. After the closure, the venue lost a lot of activity. In recent years, there have been some efforts to bring life again to the site but unfortunately, they have not succeeded.

However, this could be about to change. It has been six months since local investors started working on the renovation and rehabilitation of Insurgentes 108, to transform the property into a stunning commercial and lodging facility, keeping the structure and architectural elements that identify the building. And contrary to what many may think, the Covid-19 pandemic does not seem to be frightening them or pulling them back.

Eric Hurtado, a Mexican American real estate investor based in Puerto Vallarta learned early this year the building was available for leasing and started envisioning a riverside boutique hotel with a pretty cool local vibe for those travelers eager to explore the bay along with a coworking facility with some key amenities ideal for digital nomads seeking a work stay in Vallarta.

The concept he came out with is Hotel Cuales PV, a 26-room hotel (11 of which face the Rio Cuale) expected to open this fall and that will feature spa with pool, Apple TV service in each room, artwork by local artists, kitchen at guests’ disposal and laundry.

According to Hurtado, Hotel Cuales PV “Hopes to attract visitors from around the world, but still cater to our local neighbors with a great offering of dining, drinking, and service options”.

At Hotel Cuales PV, the Zona Romántica location is a big asset since guests will be able to walk to Puerto Vallarta’s El Centro, Malecon, main attractions, and Playa Los Muertos.

The property located at Insurgentes 108 in Zona Romántica used to house La Surtidora del Puente department store and is being turned into a modern, multi-tenant commercial building that aims to offer one-of-a-kind experiences for both visitors and locals.

As for Cowork Cuales PV (Hurtado’s coworking concept), this will be located on the second floor of the building and will offer high speed internet and packages set for long stay guests at Hotel Cuales PV. The facility will also be available for locals, creating an international and exciting environment that will foster innovation, creativity, and business. As an example of how this property will have a feeling of the old La Surtidora del Puente days, Hurtado says that Cowork Cuales PV “retains the original black and white floor tiles of the department store and features stunning metal-framed glass walls for light and connectivity throughout the space.”

Bonito Owner, Vietnamese Francie Nguyen, explains that the establishment introduces her family’s recipes, renditions of classic dishes from Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan made from scratch. “A lot of the restaurant’s recipes come from my mother’s recipe book, I try to honor my heritage by following them,” she says.

Bonito Kitchen & Bar will feature its own Asian herb garden and made-to-order dumpling station. At this new location, the establishment will also introduce a new concept that will offer readymade meals available for takeout and curbside pick up. Those eating in will enjoy a stunning garden setting and views overlooking the Rio Cuale, from a terrace adjacent to the Cuale bridge. Bonito Kitchen & Bar is expected to open in November.

At the former location, customers will still be able to enjoy some of their favorite Bonito Kitchen dishes at the restaurant Ramen Ya, owned by the same family.

“Our new location will allow us to be more creative with our menu because we will have a more spacious kitchen. It is also exciting to reach a new public in Zona Romántica, I think this will become a very nice hang out place”.

Para la mayoría de las personas que se criaron en Puerto Vallarta, el edificio de tres pisos ubicado en calle Insurgentes 108 en la colonia Emiliano Zapata (junto al puente vehicular del Río Cuale), es muy especial pues trae agradables recuerdos de su infancia.

Este sitio albergó durante varias décadas La Surtidora del Puente, la segunda sucursal de la primera tienda departamental de la ciudad y la hermana mayor de LANS (La Nueva Surtidora). En sus instalaciones, la población encontraba las últimas tendencias en ropa, calzado, muebles y artículos para el hogar en los años 60, 70, 80 y 90.

La tienda era propiedad de la bien conocida familia Meza y cerró en 2016. Después de este evento, el inmueble perdió mucha actividad. En años recientes, ha sido objeto de esfuerzos por reactivarlo, pero desafortunadamente estos no han tenido éxito. Sin embargo, esto podría estar a punto de cambiar. Desde hace un poco más de seis meses, inversionistas locales han estado trabajando en la renovación y rehabilitación de Insurgentes 108, con el objetivo de transformarlo en un espectacular edificio comercial y de alojamiento, manteniendo los elementos estructurales y arquitectónicos de la propiedad original. Y contrario a lo que algunos pudieran pensar, la pandemia por Covid-19 parece no estar atemorizándolos ni haciéndolos retroceder.

Eric Hurtado, un inversionista inmobiliario mexicoamericano radicado en Puerto Vallarta, se enteró a principios de año que Insurgentes 108 se encontraba disponible para renta y de inmediato comenzó a visualizar un hotel boutique con vistas al rio, con una vibra muy local que atrajera a aquellos viajeros que disfrutan explorar la bahía. Además, imaginó un espacio cowork con características ideales para los nómadas digitales que buscan una estancia de trabajo en la ciudad.

El concepto que Hurtado creó es Hotel Cuales PV, un complejo de 26 habitaciones (11 con vistas al río) que abrirá este otoño y que tendrá amenidades como spa con alberca, servicio Apple TV en cada habitación, arte de creadores locales, cocina y lavandería para huéspedes, entre otras. De acuerdo con Eric, “Hotel Cuales PV espera atraer visitantes de todo el mundo, pero también a los locales con una gran oferta de atractivos gastronómicos y servicios”.

La ubicación es un gran valor, pues los huéspedes podrán caminar a las principales atracciones de Puerto Vallarta como El Centro, El Malecón y Playa Los Muertos.

La apertura de Bonito Kitchen & Bar está programada para el mes de noviembre.

Pandemic Brings Changes in Businesses, Restaurants and Bars The world-wide pandemic has brought many changes, and Puerto Vallarta has not been spared. Many businesses have ceased to operate and others have had to rapidly make changes in an effort to survive. With so many of the Puerto Vallarta businesses dependent on tourism and travel, the future remains uncertain.

O&APV talked to a few business owners who have had to change their business practices. This list is by no means complete, as virtually every business in Puerto Vallarta has been affected in one way or the other.

We’ve taken the opportunity to just highlight a few different businesses and how they have changed in these min-profiles.

La Fe Hotel and Arts boutique hotel in Guadalajara, like all hotels, has been dealt a hard blow by the pandemic. Like all hotels, they’ve seen a drop in guest booking, but also in the dramatic measures it has had to undertake. The property is small, so interaction with other guests is minimal, but the hotel has implemented all government-required protocols related to COVID-19 and proactively taken additional measures some of which include closing guest rooms for a minimum of 24 hours after guests check out, followed by thorough cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces (door handles, remote controls, light switches, bathroom fixtures, etc.). The dining area and common areas are closed.

DuChateau Film With weddings and photo shoots canceled due to the pandemic, Corie DuChateau and her business, DuChateau Film, had to find a way to continue doing video production 100% remotely, and for a price their clients could afford.

“We created a concept ‘Animated Business Card’ in which we make video commercials for businesses to share on their social media sites,” DeChateau explained. “We use stock photos or photography provided by the business, mixed with custom motion graphics to create high quality commercials. All work can be done remotely.

Staging a play in the middle of a pandemic Puerto Vallarta’s Dionisio Theater Group Overcomes Unexpected Challenges

Amigas Desgraciadas (Unfortunate friends) is the new project of Puerto Vallarta’s Dionisio Theater Group. However, the staging of the play has faced an unexpected challenge: the Covid-19 pandemic. How has this process been amidst the current social distancing restrictions and when could this play premier on stage?

The director and cast talked to Out & About PV about it.

Dionisio Theater Group is one of the most active Spanish-speaking local companies in the region since its founding in 2012. Over the course of eight years, they have premiered the following plays: Abuelita de Batman, Las Anécdotas del Miembro, La Ley del Ranchero, El Hombre Sin Adjetivos, Las Tramoyanas, El Estigma Ardiente, La Posada, Las Divas de Rancho and El Destripadero Veraz.

Among these projects, La Ley del Ranchero, Las Tramoyanas and Las Divas de Rancho have conquered the LGBT+ audiences for addressing topics related to this community and/or for featuring casts of men performing women’s characters.

For 2020, Dionisio had originally planned to premier a play that follows this line, the comedy Amigas Desgraciadas, written by the Argentine playwright Hugo Daniel Marcos. However, the play has been continuously postponed due to the restrictions that emerged as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was originally scheduled for the month of August in order to commemorate the 8th anniversary of Dionisio Theater Group; but currently the company is setting the first season of the play by the end of this year or early 2021.

Amigas Desgraciadas tells the story of a group of five friends who meet at the apartment of one of them every Thursday to drink tea and play poker. In one of those encounters, some secrets come to light and lead to a very tangled and fun situation. The cast, completely composed of men features Juan Carlos Ramírez (who is also the director), Juan Pablo Hernández, César Bravo, Vilchis Joya and Alexis Velasco.

Ramírez explains: “It’s a light comedy, full of entanglements. For this story, the playwright himself suggests featuring an all-men cast and I find the idea very interesting because of the personality of each character and how they act.”

Rehearsals and social distancing “The first reading of the script, which marked the beginning of our rehearsals, took place on May 4th and it was through a videoconference platform because in that period the instructions from the Puerto Vallarta authorities were to stay at home as much as possible. We had this type of rehearsal for several weeks,” Juan Pablo Hernández says.

“During that period when it was not possible to meet in person, we took the opportunity to go through the psychology of our characters, determine how they were going to speak, the costumes and hairstyles. Later, when conditions allowed us to meet respecting a distance of 1.5 meters, we began to have our first face-to-face rehearsals, always using face masks and following all the protocols. In fact, I think that when the public has the chance to see the play, they will realize that all the movements of the

Fall Digital Issue characters on stage were carefully established by the director in order to keep the proper distance between each of us and the public,” Alexis Velasco adds.

Is the play premiering through a streaming platform?

Regarding this possibility, Juan Carlos Ramírez mentions: “We will continue to work keeping a positive attitude and with the aim of providing the public with the show they deserve and as soon as the authorities allow live performances as normal. We know that these days we have the option of performing live and remotely through a streaming platform (something we have done previously with other projects such as “Las Divas de Rancho”), but we think that the best option is always to have that face to face interaction with the public and we hope this will happen soon because we really to be onstage.”

Although some entertainment venues are currently beginning to open their doors with reduced capacities, Dionisio has decided to wait a little longer to ensure the safety of the attendees and the cast.

Preparando una obra de teatro en plena pandemia Por O&APV Staff

Para 2020, Dionisio tenía planeado estrenar un proyecto que sigue esta misma línea, la comedia “Amigas Desgraciadas”, escrita por el dramaturgo argentino Hugo Daniel Marcos. Sin embargo, la puesta en escena ha aplazado continuamente su estreno debido a las restricciones que la pandemia por Covid-19 ha provocado.

Originalmente, la primera función estaba programada para el mes de agosto para conmemorar el 8vo aniversario de Grupo de Teatro Dionisio; pero actualmente la agrupación considera que el panorama más probable es que la primera temporada del proyecto tenga lugar a finales de este año o principios de 2021.

“Amigas Desgraciadas” relata la historia de un grupo de cinco amigas que se reúnen a tomar el té y jugar a las cartas todos los jueves en el departamento de una de ellas. En uno de esos encuentros, salen a la luz ciertos secretos que desembocan en un conflicto muy enredoso y divertido. El elenco, completamente integrado por hombres, está conformado por Juan Carlos Ramírez (quien también dirige), Juan Pablo Hernández, César Bravo, Vilchis Joya y Alexis Velasco.

Ramírez explica: “Es una comedia muy ligera, de enredos. Para este texto, el dramaturgo mismo sugiere que la obra se monte con actores en lugar de actrices y esta idea me parece muy interesante por cómo son estos personajes y cómo se desenvuelven”.

Lecturas y ensayos con sana distancia “La primera lectura oficial del proyecto, con la que iniciamos los ensayos, la tuvimos el 4 de mayo y fue a través de una plataforma de videoconferencia pues en ese periodo las indicaciones por parte de las autoridades de Puerto Vallarta eran permanecer en casa y salir únicamente a realizar tareas de primera necesidad. Esta modalidad de ensayo la mantuvimos durante varias semanas”, describe Juan Pablo Hernández.

“Amigas Desgraciadas” es el nuevo proyecto de Grupo de Teatro Dionisio. Sin embargo, la puesta en escena se ha enfrentado a un reto inesperado: la contingencia sanitaria por Covid-19. ¿Cómo ha sido la travesía para preparar esta obra en medio de las restricciones actuales y cuándo podría estrenarse sobre los escenarios?

El director y el elenco hablan acerca de ello.

Grupo de Teatro Dionisio es una de las compañías locales hispanoparlantes con más actividad en Puerto Vallarta desde su fundación en 2012. Su trayectoria está conformada por las siguientes puestas en escena: “Abuelita de Batman”, “Las Anécdotas del Miembro”, “La Ley del Ranchero”, “El Hombre Sin Adjetivos”, “Las Tramoyanas”, “El Estigma Ardiente”, “La Posada”, “Las Divas de Rancho” y “El Destripadero Veraz”.

Entre estos proyectos, “La Ley del Ranchero”, “Las Tramoyanas” y “Las Divas de Rancho” se han colocado entre el gusto del público LGBT+ por abordar temáticas relacionadas con la comunidad y/o por incluir actores varones que interpretan personajes femeninos.

“Durante esos meses que era imposible reunirnos, aprovechamos para realizar la psicología de nuestros personajes, pensar de qué manera iban a hablar, determinar los vestuarios y qué tipo de peinados llevarían. Algunos meses después, cuando las condiciones permitieron que pudiéramos reunirnos manteniendo una distancia segura entre cada uno de nosotros, comenzamos a

Fall Digital Issue tener nuestros primeros ensayos presenciales, siempre utilizando cubrebocas y con todas las medidas de precaución. De hecho, cuando el público vea la obra se darán cuenta de que los desplazamientos y movimientos de los personajes están muy cuidados por el director para guardar una sana distancia entre nosotros y el público”, agrega Alexis Velasco. ¿Estreno a través de una plataforma streaming?

Ante esta posibilidad, el director de la obra menciona: “Nosotros seguimos trabajando con toda la actitud para poder darle al público la función que se merece, en cuanto lo podamos hacer de manera presencial. Aunque hoy en día tenemos la opción de hacerlo a través de una plataforma streaming (algo a lo que ya hemos recurrido anteriormente con otros proyectos como “Las Divas de Rancho”), siempre creemos que como actores la mejor opción siempre es tener al público frente a ti y esperamos que esto suceda lo antes posible, pues extrañamos el escenario y la interacción con los espectadores”.

Aunque actualmente algunos centros de entretenimiento comienzan a abrir sus puertas con aforos reducidos, Grupo de Teatro Dionisio ha decidido esperar un poco más para garantizar la seguridad de los asistentes y el elenco.
