LETTER FROM THE EDITOR There are countless reasons to love Puerto Vallarta, whether you’re a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor. Every one of us can tell a story about the path that led us here, and why we return again and again, or why we chose to stay. The goal of Out & About Puerto Vallarta is to shine a light on the greatness and the complexity of this city through the lens of its LGBT residents and visitors.

To be clear: Out & About Puerto Vallarta is for everyone.

We’re going to peel back the layers of the community, travel beyond the obvious places, learn and share stories with our neighbors.

The idea for this magazine developed in much the same way our sister publication, Out & About Nashville, came into existence over 15 years ago: there are conversations happening here, discussions about the growth of the community and the city, the evolution of our shared experiences, and its being lost to posterity. When historians will look back on this time we want to assist in recording a document of how we live, what we value, who we are.

Our interests and leisure time, of course, are not always bound by our LGBT identity. We eat at restaurants outside La Zona Romantica. We sometimes visit beaches where the chairs and umbrellas don’t extend five rows deep, that don’t necessarily have a full bar menu on site.

And this is the first issue! Let’s celebrate some things. Natasha Moraga’s vision along with the communities work and donations have transformed the landscape of this city with her mosaic work that currently is slowly conquering the Lazaro Cardenas Park.

Bob Price, the founder of the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, has developed a world class facility worthy of a return visit practically any time of the year. And a familiar face from a popular nighttime establishment shares details of how he spends his free time in a way you probably wouldn’t expect. Each of them are proving that life in Vallarta is anything you make it!

ONE TESSERA AT A TIME, an Art Project Builds Community

osaic artist Natasha Moraga didn’t set out to radically alter the face of Lazaro Cardenas Park, back in 2009 when she traveled to Philadelphia to apprentice with famed muralist and artist Isaiah Zagar.

“I trained with him and I learned everything I could,” she said, “and I came back and I opened a restaurant. Then I decided that wasn’t my thing and I just decided then that I wanted to do what I really liked.”

The inspiration, where you’ll now find her first mosaic installation, was located just around the corner from the park.

“There used to be a big white house right at the corner of Pino Suarez and Basilio Badillo and it was there for over 30 years,” she said. “There were three little apartments in the back and I lived there, and every time I walked outside I would see the wall filled with graffiti but not the cool graffiti. I decided I was gonna

ask for permits and see how it went. I honestly never thought they were gonna give it to me because it’s a big wall and I thought they’d look at me like, “Who the hell are you?!”

“But they said go for it and then it took me a month to start because I really had no idea how to start. But once I got going, it took five months to finish. We started in October 2011 and we finished February 2012.”

Since then Moraga has built mosaic pieces on a 500 square metre wall at the Marina, the famed “Puerto Vallarta” lettering at the north entrance of town, numerous smaller projects at local hotels, as well as the benches on Francisca Rodriguez between Olas Altas and the Los Muertos Pier.

The work being done on the columns and amphitheater seating at Lazaro Cardenas is just the first phase of the planned revision of that park. It will eventually entail the gazebo as well as the stone benches around the circumference and inside the entire block.

“Our goal is to finish the park and no matter what, I’m gonna finish that park!” she said. “It will include everything. All the

planters, the gazebo, the houses that are on the corners that are the entrances to the parking lot.”

The project is entirely funded through private donations.

“We conduct workshops,” she said. “Three day workshops, hands-on, we teach you how to cut mirror, do everything, and you get to leave your legacy for Vallarta, doing a column or an area of the park. We also have an old fashioned donation box. And customized tiles. We have different options for customized tiles. We also have benches available.”

With no government financial support and private donations that cover just expenses for her and her crew, Moraga is grateful for every bit of support — financial and otherwise — that her work has received.

For a woman who is proud to acknowledge she has just a sixth grade education, and who has withstood taunts from friends and former girlfriends who’ve told her there is no way she could survive creating mosaic art alone, Natasha Moraga is delighted now to spend her days doing exactly that.

a artista del mosaico Natasha Moraga no pensó que sería un agente de cambio del parque Lázaro Cárdenas en el 2009 cuando viajó a Filadelfia como aprendiz del famoso muralista y artista Isaiah Zagar.

“El me entrenó y aprendí todo lo que pude” mencionó, “y regrese y abrí un restaurante.

Después decidí que no era lo mío y que quería hacer lo que realmente me gustaba” La inspiración de su primer mural de mosaicos se encuentra justo a la vuelta del parque.

“Solía haber una casa enorme y blanca justo en la esquina de Pino Suarez y Basilio Badillo y estuvo ahí por más de 30 años,” dijo.

“Había 3 pequeños apartamentos en la parte de atrás y ahí vivía yo. Cada vez que salía veía la pared tapizada de grafiti, pero no del grafiti cool. Decidí que iba a empezar a buscar los permisos y ver qué pasaba. La verdad, nunca pensé que me los fueran a dar porque es una barda muy grande y pensé que dirían, “ ¿Y quién demonios eres tú?!”

“YO QUERÍA HACER LO QUE REALMENTE ME GUSTABA”

“Pero me dijeron “adelante” y me tomó un mes comenzar porque realmente no tenía ni idea de cómo. Pero una vez que comencé, me llevo 5 meses terminar. Empezamos en octubre del 2011 y terminamos en febrero del 2012” Desde entonces Moraga ha hecho murales de mosaicos en una pared de más de 500 metros cuadrados en la Marina, las famosas letras de “Puerto Vallarta” en la entrada norte de la ciudad, numerosos proyectos más pequeños en hoteles, así como las bancas en Francisca Rodríguez, entre Olas Altas y el muelle Los Muertos.

El trabajo en las columnas y el anfiteatro Lázaro Cárdenas es sólo la primera fase del proyecto planeado para el parque.

Eventualmente implicará todo el gazebo, así como las bancas de piedra en la circunferencia y dentro de todo el parque. “Nuestra meta es terminar el parque sin importar lo que pase.

Voy a terminar ese parque!” comentó Moraga. ”Incluirá todo, todos los maceteros, el gazebo, las entradas a los estacionamientos que están en cada esquinas.” El proyecto está totalmente pagado por patrocinadores del sector privado.

“Llevamos a cabo talleres,” añadió. “Tres días de talleres, con manos en la obra, te enseñamos cómo cortar el espejo, hacer todo, y dejas tu legado para Vallarta, recubriendo una columna o área del parque. También tenemos cajas para donaciones y azulejos personalizables para los cuales tenemos diferentes estilos y opciones. Y tenemos bancas disponibles.”

Sin ayuda financiera del gobierno, y patrocinios del sector privado que cubren apenas los costos de ella y su equipo, Moraga aprecia cada apoyo por mínimo que sea, (financiero o de cualquier otro tipo) que su trabajo recibe. Siendo una mujer que con orgullo admite que sólo estudio primaria, quien fue víctima de burlas de sus amigos, y de ex amigas que le decían que de ninguna manera iba a sobrevivir creando murales de mosaicos, Natasha Moraga está feliz de pasar sus días haciendo precisamente esto.

ou haven’t seen bougainvillea until you’ve visited the Vallarta Botanical Gardens. And that’s just the welcome center area.

There are rose gardens. Hiking trails.

A cactus garden. Plants Indigenous and unique to the region.

As a horticulture hobbyist, Bob Price fell in love with the exuberant nature of Puerto Vallarta from the moment he arrived in 2004.

The gardens opened the following year, which makes 2018 its 13th anniversary.

“I’ve always been interested in nature and gardens and plants,” he said, “so I found it very odd that no one had made a botanical garden here. Originally my idea was to do something much more low key and much smaller than what actually occurred but it was an idea that snowballed once we got it started.”

Price owned a restaurant in Florida prior to his relocation to Vallarta, an experience that undoubtedly has influenced the superlative service and authentically Mexican flavors at La Hacienda de Oro, the on-site restaurant.

Recently deemed an official International Peace Garden, the designation acknowledges the welcoming and inviting communities of Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrientes as models for Mexico and the world.

Delta Airlines selected the botanical garden as the first on its recommended “to do” list in 2018 for travelers to the city.

According to Bob, the location for the gardens found him.

“I looked all around, north of Vallarta in the Nuevo Vallarta area and even inside the city limits of Vallarta,” he said. “But I found this place eventually. It was not as close as I wanted it to be to town, but it was the more magical location with the river going through it and the mountains in view. It’s up a little bit higher so the air is cooler. I was led to this location after searching for it!”

La pasión por las plantas hizo que el horticultor Bob Pricen se enamorara de la exuberante naturaleza de Puerto Vallarta.

Fue amor a primera vista desde su visita inicial en el 2004.

El siguiente año Bob estaría abriendo el jardín botánico, marcando el 2018 su aniversario número 13.

“Siempre he tenido interés en la naturaleza, los jardines y plantas” mencionó “Y me parece muy raro que nadie haya puesto un jardín botánico aquí. Al principio mi idea era algo más simple y pequeño de lo que es, pero fue un proyecto que creció una vez que comenzamos”

Price tenía un restaurante en Florida antes de mudarse a Vallarta, una experiencia que sin duda alguna ha influenciado el excelente servicio y autenticidad de sabores mexicanos en La Hacienda de Oro, restaurante ubicado allí. Recientemente nombrado un sitio Internacional Peace Garden, esta designación reconoce las comunidades acogedoras y atractivas de Puerto Vallarta y Cabo Corriente como modelos a seguir por México y el mundo.

Los jardines botánicos son la atracción número 1 en la lista de recomendaciones

de cosas que hacer en la ciudad de la aerolínea Delta en el 2018. Según Bob, él no encontró el lugar para los jardines, el lugar lo encontró a él.

“Busqué por todos lados, al norte en Nuevo Vallarta e inclusive dentro de los límites de la ciudad” añadió “Pero encontré este lugar finalmente. No estaba tan cerca como quería, pero fue el lugar más mágico, con el rio atravesando y la vista de las montañas. La altura es un poco elevada lo cual hace que el aire sea más fresco. Fui guiado a este lugar después de buscarlo!”

EMBRACING THE PRESENT, and remembering the past

Three locals discuss life in Puerto Vallarta and the changes they’ve witnessed over the past five to twenty years. Natasha Moraga is a muralist and mosaic tile artist who moved here twenty years ago as a teenager. Oscar Moran is an architect, urban planner, and hotelier whose family roots in Puerto Vallarta span multiple generations. Real estate and business attorney Roberto Ortiz de Montellano moved here five years ago.

NATASHA: All of Old Town, or Zona Romantica, has changed a lot. I mean all the city has changed but, for me, what I can mostly see and what impacts me the most is this side, the south side. Zona Romantica has changed so much since I got here 20 years ago. Just with the buildings and everything. It’s like a different city. It had a Mexican charm. It felt safe. Now it feels like a city. It used to feel more like a little town. All the buildings were low, there were no high rises like there is now.

OSCAR: There were a lot of trees. The thing is that the trees were on private property, so once those properties got sold and developed, we lost a lot of trees.

NATASHA: I like the new Malecon but I also used to love the old Malecon. The energy was different. Cars could pass by so you would cruise in your car and all the clubs were there and you were just hanging out. Now, since they changed the Malecon the economy in El Centro has gone down.

OSCAR: I wanna say something about Centro. I’m living there right now and I’m surprised to see the amount of people. A lot of Canadians used to come to Zona Romantica, like snow birds. I feel like Zona Romantica is becoming more gay than ever, ever, ever, you

know the amount of LGBT tourism that you get there is, I think, it’s far surpassed any other years and so the people that would normally share the spaces with LGBT people are now finding newer, more affordable spaces. And a lot of these guys are staying over in Centro. They put their little Canada flags on their balconies. There are so many of them, if you go there. Little houses that you thought were like, ‘who knows who lives there?’ People now with AirBnB, everybody is renting their little space that they have.

ROBERTO: Maybe that’s a good thing. Centro is having a comeback, then. And that is an area that I think is worth protecting in terms of the buildings and the structures. This, Emiliano Zapata, many of the buildings that were here, the truth is that they were ugly buildings that were falling apart. A new ten-story building is better than an old building that is falling apart.

NATASHA: But then you have a new ten story building that is also falling apart, like the one in front of the park. That’s been there for ten years.

ROBERTO: Seems like they sold it now. They’re going to renovate it. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

OSCAR: Well they have a sign there. We hope so.

ROBERTO: When I moved here five years ago a very important thing for me was the gay scene. Before I moved here I was living in Puebla which is, even though it’s a large city, the gay scene is very, very small and very closeted. I wanted a place where I was going to feel free and where I was going to work and just be me and didn’t have to worry about hiding my sexuality. And now, like Oscar was saying, this area of town is becoming more gay and gay and gay, for me that’s a good thing.

OSCAR: I was just pointing out the phenomenon. Probably for people who come here for the first time, or they come here exclusively for Zona Romantica, gay guys or girls, they don’t venture out into seeing downtown. Many people don’t, and they’re missing out on seeing some wonderful things or experiencing some very authentic places.

NATASHA: I know people who’ve lived here for many years who’ve not gone to the marina area.

“I WOULD LOVE TO CONVERT EL NOGALITO INTO A NATIONAL PARK. I THINK THAT WOULD BE AWESOME” – NATASHA MORAGA

OSCAR: If I could control anything over the next five years, I would make a ton of parks! I would say, ‘all of this you need to preserve as rainforest and put trails and just balance out what we as locals have in terms of access to nature, to views,’ and that sort of thing.

NATASHA: I would love to convert El Nogalito into a national park. I think that would be awesome. Just preserve it and put some little hiking areas or stairways. There’s some awesome views up there, kind of like Costa Rica. They have a whole bunch of natural parks, or preserve parks. They charge for an entrance, that’s how they keep it clean and really we have the same vegetation as they do over there.

Also I would tile up all the ugly walls that I find everywhere.

Especially the schools. The school at En Centro, I don’t know why they paint it always like this dark brown that looks very scary and I imagine myself as a kid walking into that school, it’s like “I would not wanna go there.” I would start with that one and then go to the other one that’s near the theater? Vallarta theater? It’s also a school and all the walls are horrible and … oh yeah… I would tile up the whole city!

OSCAR: We need a tram. Just one line would take us everywhere.

ROBERTO: And get rid of the buses. If I can control anything, I would get rid of all buses and put in a tram. Or just add better public transportation.

OSCAR: Real water taxis. You could even go to the airport in a water taxi because the [air] strip hits the beach. There could be a little terminal there and be completely multi-modal. Air. Water. And land.

It would be wonderful. You could leave from Los Muertos Pier, nonstop to the airport.

NATASHA: I would totally get rid of the buses also. But you’re never going to make everyone happy. I read this note that said ‘we’re gonna change all the buses to new ones’ and people were complaining.

‘They’re gonna take the charm away!’

ROBERTO: They pollute a lot. They’re horrible.

OSCAR: I have some friends, when they fly in, they take the bus from the airport only because of the extreme adventure. They cannot take it back because it’s unreliable but they will take it in.

NATASHA: It’s like going to Disneyland on crack.

AFERRÁNDONOS A HOY Recordando el ayer

Tres residentes platican la vida en Puerto Vallarta y los cambios que han presenciado en los últimos 5 a 20 años. Natasha Morana es una muralista de mosaico quien se mudó aquí hace 20 años en su adolescencia. Oscar Moran es un arquitecto, planeador urbano y hotelero cuyas raíces familiares han estado sembradas en Puerto Vallarta por muchas generaciones. Agente inmobiliario y abogado comercial Roberto Ortiz Montellano se mudó aquí hace 5 años.

NATASHA: Todo Viejo Vallarta, o Zona Romántica ha cambiado mucho. En realidad toda la ciudad ha cambiado, pero para mí, lo que he visto más y lo que me impacta más es este lado, el lado sur. La zona romántica ha cambiado muchísimo desde que llegue aquí hace 20 más.

Los edificios, todo! Es como una ciudad diferente. Tenía un carisma mexicano. Se sentía segura. Hoy en día se siente como una ciudad, solía sentirme más como un pequeño pueblo. Todos los edificios eran no muy altos, no había rascacielos como los hay hoy en día.

OSCAR: Había muchos árboles. Los cuales estaban en propiedades privadas y una vez que esas propiedades se vendieron a constructores perdimos muchos árboles.

NATASHA: Me gusta el nuevo malecón, pero también me encantaba el viejo. La energía era diferente. Los carros podían transitarlo y salías a pasearte en tu auto, estaban todos los centros nocturnos y pasabas un buen rato. Desde que cambiaron el malecón, la economía en el centro ha bajado.

OSCAR: Quisiera agregar algo sobre el centro. Ahí vivo y me sorprende ver la cantidad de gente. Muchos canadienses solían venir a la zona romántica como aves de invierno. Siento que la zona romántica es más, más, más gay que nunca, sabían que la cantidad de turismo LGBT que llega, creo, ha sobrepasado por muchísimo la de otros años así es que la gente que usualmente compartía espacios con la comunidad LGBT ahora están encontrando lugares más nuevos, más baratos. Mucha de esta gente se queda en el centro y cuelgan sus banderas de Canadá en sus balcones. Hay muchísimas banderas si pasas por el centro. Pequeñas casas de las que pensabas “ Quién sabe quien viva allí?”. Con AirBnB todos están rentando los espacios que tienen, por pequeños que sean.

ROBERTO: Quizá eso es algo bueno. El centro está resurgiendo. Y es una área que pienso que debe de ser protegida en cuanto a edificios

y estructuras. Aquí, en Emiliano Zapata, la verdad es que muchos de los edificios eran feos y se estaban cayendo. Un edificio nuevo de 10 niveles es mejor que uno viejo que estaba derrumbándose.

NATASHA: Pero luego tienes también un edificio de 10 niveles que se está desmoronando, justo frente al parque. Ha estado ahí 10 años.

ROBERTO: Parece ser que lo vendieron, lo van a renovar. Pero no estoy seguro de que sea cierto o no.

OSCAR: tienen un letrero. Esperemos.

ROBERTO: Cuando me mude aquí hace 5 años, algo muy importante para mí era el ambiente gay. Antes de mudarme aquí estaba viviendo en Puebla y aunque es una ciudad grande, la comunidad gay era muy, muy pequeña y enclosetada. Quería estar en un lugar donde me sintiera libre, donde iría a trabajar y no me tenía que preocupar sobre esconder mi sexualidad. Y ahora, como Oscar lo decía, esta parte de la ciudad es más y más y más gay, para mí eso es algo muy bueno.

OSCAR: Solo quería resaltar este fenómeno. Quizá para le gente que visita por primera vez, o que vienen exclusivamente a la Zona Romántica, chicos y chicas gays, ellos no exploran el centro. De hecho mucha gente no lo hace y se están perdiendo de ver cosas maravillosas o experimentar lugares muy auténticos.

NATASHA: Conozco gente que ha vivido aquí por muchos años y no ha ido al área de la Marina.

OSCAR: Si yo pudiera tener todo el control en los siguientes 5 años, yo pondría muchos parques! Diría, “Todo esto se tiene que preservar como selva y poner senderos y balancear los que como locales tenemos de acceso en cuanto a la naturaleza, las vistas” y ese tipo de cosas.

NATASHA: Me encantaría convertir el Nogalito en un parque nacional. Eso sería genial. Preservarlo, poner senderos o escalones. Hay vistas maravillosas desde ahí, como en Costa Rica. Allá tienen muchos parques nacionales y de reserva. Cobran por entrar, y así es como los mantienen limpios y en realidad tenemos la misma vegetación.

También yo pondría murales de mosaicos en esas paredes feas por todos lados. Especialmente en las escuelas en el centro. Yo no sé por qué pintan esas paredes en ese color café oscuro que da miedo, me imagino a mí misma de niña llegando a esa escuela y decir, “No quiero entrar ahí” empezaría con esa y luego la que está cerca del teatro?

Teatro Vallarta? También hay una escuela y las paredes están horribles y…sí… pondría murales de mosaicos en toda la ciudad!!

OSCAR: Necesitamos un tranvía. Solo una línea nos llevaría a todos lados.

“ME ENCANTARÍA CONVERTIR EL NOGALITO EN UN PARQUE NACIONAL. ESO SERÍA GENIAL” – NATASHA MORAGA ROBERTO: Y deshacernos de los camiones. Si yo pudiera controlar algo, yo me desharía de los camiones y solamente tener el tranvía. O simplemente agregar mejor transportación pública.

OSCAR: Taxis acuáticos de verdad. Inclusive podrías ir a al aeropuerto en taxis de agua por que la pista llega hasta la playa. Podría haber una pequeña terminal ahí y ser totalmente multimodal. Aire, Agua. Y tierra. Sería maravilloso. Podrías salir del muelle Los Muertos directo al aeropuerto.

NATASHA: Yo definitivamente también me desharía de los camiones. Pero nunca vas a hacer a todo mundo feliz. Leí una noticia que decía, “Vamos a cambiar todos los camiones viejos por nuevos.” Y la gente se estaba quejando, “Van a quitar el carisma” ROBERTO: Contaminan mucho. Son horribles.

OSCAR: Tengo algunos amigos que toman el camión del aeropuerto cuando vienen de visita sólo porque es toda una aventura extrema. No lo pueden tomar hacia al aeropuerto porque es muy poco confiable pero lo toman de venida.

NATASHA: Es como ir a Disneylandia en esteroides.

Restaurant Review: Las Carmelitas

A CITY-SPANNING VIEW will only whet your appetite

U

ber will take you to Las Carmelitas. The driver may visibly hesitate before you engage some of the steep hills that rise over the 1.5 kms of private property once you turn off Par Vial (from Calle Av. Libramiento before the tunnel). You may feel compelled to over-tip him, as I did.

He’ll drop you off beside an empty patio that, in the past, was the location of the restaurant. Today you must walk up the white painted ramp, you can’t miss it. The ramp zigzags as a confident snake before you reach the dining room. And the view.

The single highest publicly accessible point in the city, Las Carmelitas will take your breath away. With just a turn of your head you can look down upon La Zona Romantica and then watch a cruise ship exit the new port across from Galerias Vallarta and sail out to sea.

Stick around long enough and you’ll note the difference between the speeds of sight and sound when the Pirates of the Bay fireworks explode in a spectacle so small they could fit in the palm of your hand and then, seconds later, pop again for just your ears.

The margarita is a popular drink of choice.

It arrives in a glass resembling an oversized

marble, cloudy with a swirling stream of color running through it, the size and weight of it closer to that of a five-pin bowling ball.

Many items on the menu will appear a little overpriced, given the mostly unfinished décor of the structure especially, and you will find your entrée underwhelming. The service is notably slow, but don’t forget: you’re there for the view. And most nights the dining room feels like it is all yours.

I visited Las Carmelitas twice and each time there were no more than four other parties present, each of us spaced far enough for our conversation and overall dining experience to feel entirely intimate, each of us taking turns to photograph the forest-lined hills that climb beyond the building as well as the views of the bay, pinpointing individual locations around town from a fresh, new elevated perspective.

Be forewarned: Uber will not pick you up from Las Carmelitas. But the staff is prepared. Your waiter will know which taxi to call and in no time you’ll be on your way back down the winding hill, into the lights and traffic, back to the bustle of the city, and home.

LA VISTA: el mejor platillo del menu P

uedes llegar en Uber. Se llama Las Carmelitas. El Chofer pueda pensarla dos veces antes de aventurarse a las pronunciadas colinas que ascienden sobre un kilómetro y medio de terreno después de girar en la intersección de Par Vial y Libramiento, antes del túnel. Te van a dar ganas de darle una propina muy generosa, como lo hice yo.

El chofer te dejará junto a un patio abandonado, donde, hace años, estaba el restaurante. Hoy en día para llegar tienes que caminar una rampa pintada de blanco que no pasa desapercibida y que gira y se desliza en zigzag, como el caminar de una víbora. Al llegar encontrarás una vista espectacular.

Las Carmelitas, el lugar más alto con accesibilidad en la ciudad, te dejará sin aliento. Con girar un poco la cabeza podrás ver desde la zona romántica hasta alguno de los cruceros navegando hacia el mar del puerto frente a Galerias Vallarta.

Si observas el panorama por un largo rato notarás un peculiar desfase entre el sonido y vista en los fuegos artificiales del barco de Los Piratas de la Bahía. Primero los verás explotar en un espectáculo relativamente tan pequeño que lo pudieras tapar con un dedo, segundos después los escucharas resonar sólo para ti.

La margarita, bebida predilecta, se sirve en un vaso parecido a una canica gigante de vidrio soplado, semi translúcido y con remolinos de color, del tamaño y peso de una bola de boliche.

Algunos de los platillo en el menú te parecerán un poco caros, especialmente dada la decoración sin terminar y las instalaciones.

Tu platillo de entrada te parecerá casi decepcionante. El servicio es lento, pero ten en mente: estas ahí por la impresionante vista. Y en la mayoría de las noches sentirás que todo el restaurante es sólo para ti.

He visitado Las Carmelitas dos veces y en ambas ocasiones había no más de cuatro mesas ocupadas. Había suficiente espacio para mantener conversaciones y en sí, toda la experiencia, demasiado privadas.

Tomábamos turnos para capturar en fotos el paisaje con colinas boscosas que escalan caprichosamente más allá de los edificios y la vista de la bahía, resaltando aleatoriamente

lugares específicos dándote una nueva y elevada perspectiva de la ciudad.

Advertencia: Uber no te recogerá de Las Carmelitas. Pero el personal lo sabe y tu mesero llamará un taxi y pronto estarás de regreso en la colina sinuosa, y en la apresurada civilización.

TOYS HEART S

ometimes you can tell when a stranger carries around a beautiful story. You can see it in their eyes. For others, you have to dig a little deeper, and like a precious stone mine, slowly its magnificence will start to shine.

Daniel is a waiter at Margaritas Cantina in Zona Romantica, one of the most popular bars at the gay strip on Lazaro Cardenas. You may recognize him by his ever-present cap, fit body, and easy-going, flirtatious nature. Underneath it all, there is a greater beauty beyond eye perception.

The interaction first happened by chance as me and the editor of this magazine were brainstorming about interviewing waiters and bartenders. We were at a bar next to Margaritas. “Let’s ask them what they are passionate about, something you couldn’t tell by a simple waiter-client interaction” I said, overexcited. A couple of drinks will do that to me.

Daniel passed by at that moment on the side walk, so I called him to ask him a simple question.

“What do you do in your spare time?” I asked. “I like playing football and I collect toys,” he said.

I was curious and surprised by his answer. He was raised with a degree of scarcity, he said, and looked away. He took a minute to absorb this himself like it was a new piece of news. Then he looked back at me almost guilty and corrected himself. It wasn’t that bad, he said. He had clothes. A glass half-full attitude. This inspired him to start collecting toys and deliver them to the poorest neighborhoods and areas around the city and outer city. It started last year for Children’s Day. “I was just working, I had no clients, and I had time to think and it just clicked.”

He mimicked this moment visually, the click, and laughed.

Once with a target in mind, he started telling clients, friends and using his Facebook to ask for donations. By the time Children’s Day arrived, he had hundreds of toys to give away. “People’s response was very good the first time” The second time was for Christmas and the third time for the day of the wise man, getting more toys every time.

He also handed out basic food packages on Mother’s Day, with money remaining from cash donations.

When I asked him how many toys he collected last time he immediately said 900, his prompt response was accompanied with visible pride and happiness.

At this point, I was way past the flirty eyes. I saw a compassionate selfless human being. And he had been out here in front of us all, serving us drinks, making us dance. I felt then ashamed, in a way. I’d just drank two or five beers. That’s like two toys.

DEL CORAZÓN

lgunas veces puedes percibir una bella historia en la vida de un desconocido. La puedes ver en sus ojos. Otras veces tienes que escarbar un poco más, y como una mina de piedras preciosas, lentamente su majestuosidad comenzara a brillar.

Daniel es un mesero del bar Margaritas Cantina en la Zona Romántica, uno de los bares más populares en el área gay sobre Lázaro Cárdenas. Su gorra, cuerpo fornido y su naturaleza relajada y coqueta lo distinguen de los demás. Pero debajo de todo, había una belleza más allá de la que percibimos con la mirada.

La interacción sucedió por casualidad mientras el editor de esta revista y yo estábamos debatiendo sobre entrevistar a meseros y bartenders. Estábamos en un bar junto a Las Margaritas. “Vamos a preguntarles qué les apasiona, algo que no puedas darte cuenta cuando te atienden” dije, muy emocionado. Un par de tragos y me emociono mucho.

Daniel iba pasando en ese momento por la banqueta, y le hablé para hacerle una simple pregunta.

“Que haces en tus tiempo libre?” pregunte. “Me gusta jugar futbol y recolectar juguetes,” respondió.

Su respuesta me causó sorpresa y curiosidad. El creció con un cierto nivel de escases, comentó y alejó la mirada por un buen rato como procesándolo o reviviéndolo. Luego regresó la mirada, casi sintiéndose culpable y se corrigió a sí mismo. “No puedo decir que tanta escases, no era como que andaba con una mano adelante y una atrás”. Él era de los que veía el vaso medio lleno, pensé. Esto lo inspiró a empezar a recolectar juguetes y entregarlos en los vecindarios más pobres de la ciudad y en las afueras de la ciudad. Comenzó el año pasado para el Día del Niño. “Estaba trabajando, no tenía clientes en ese momento, y tenía el tiempo de pensar y de repente ‘Click.’” Reactuó ese momento y se rio.

YA CON UN OBJETIVO EN MENTE COMENZÓ A PLATICAR CON AMIGOS Y CLIENTES Y USO SU FACEBOOK PARA PEDIR DONACIONES. PARA EL DÍA DEL NINO YA HABÍA JUNTADO CIENTOS DE JUGUETES PARA REGALAR Ya con un objetivo en mente comenzó a platicar con amigos y clientes y uso su Facebook para pedir donaciones. Para el Día del Nino ya había juntado cientos de juguetes para regalar. ”La gente respondió muy bien la primera vez”. La segunda vez fue para Navidad y la tercera para el Día de los Reyes Magos. También repartió despensas el Día de las Madres con dinero de donaciones que le había sobrado.

Cuando le pregunté cuántos juguetes había juntado la última vez respondió inmediatamente “900”. Su respuesta acompañada con evidente orgullo y alegría.

A este punto veía mucho más que unos ojos bonitos. Vi a un ser humano compasivo y noble. Y lo habíamos tenido ahí todo este tiempo, justo en frente de todos nosotros, sirviéndonos tragos y haciéndonos bailar. En ese momento me sentí avergonzado de mí mismo. Me acaba de tomar de 2 o 5 cervezas. Lo equivalente a 2 juguetes.

Esa noche regrese a casa inspirado. Fascinado con la historia de Daniel, me pregunté, “Qué estoy haciendo yo por mi comunidad?” Te debes de estar haciendo la misma pregunta.

Daniel es la fuente principal de ingreso de su casa. Vive con su mamá y dos hermanas. Quiere recolectar más de 900 juguetes para el 30 de Abril así es que si quieres contribuir, ve a Margaritas Cantina y lleva un juguete o una donación.
