CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION S

o, here we are. The inaugural month of a year-long America 250 celebration.

Out & About is proud to play a role in Wilmington’s and Delaware’s recognition of this major milestone. And our sister company, Event Allies, is honored to be managing showcase events for this celebration — from Separation Day in Historic New Castle (June 12-13) to the Delaware 250 celebration on Wilmington’s Riverfront (July 4).

This issue also marks the first installment of our Wilmington 250 series. For the next 12 months, we’ll be sharing the story behind historic landmarks throughout Greater Wilmington. We begin with Willingtown Square (pg. 15).

However, before the festivities begin, I have a suggestion — brush up on your American history. A celebration is more rewarding if you understand its purpose.

Personally, I’ve found Ken Burns’ documentary, The American Revolution (currently airing on PBS), an entertaining trip back to junior high history class. As usual, Burns has transformed exhaustive research into engaging storytelling. You’ll quickly realize you’ve forgotten more than you knew you had forgotten.

Next, may I suggest a reading of the document that launched this grand experiment — the Declaration of Independence. It will take just minutes — it’s only 133 words — but it should be required reading during this semiquincentennial — especially the part about all men being created equal.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Finally, for extra credit, work your way through the U.S. Constitution. It’s a bit beefier than the Declaration (just over 4,500 words), but is there a more vital document in our country today?

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

I recognize this is an old school ask in this age of AI and TikTok. Truth is, it should be a requirement of citizenship.

It’s been 250 years. People forget. We owe it to our forefathers — and ourselves — to make 2026 a year of retrospection.

Much was sacrificed for “the pursuit of happiness” we enjoy today. And while our visionary founding fathers created a system of government that is a model for the world, those “inalienable rights” remain a goal, not a guarantee.

So, while a degree of self-congratulation is warranted, let’s not forget that our country is still a grand experiment.

In the context of world history, 250 years is a long weekend.

England, France, China . . . they have buildings a thousand years older than us.

Yes, this journey has been remarkable. Let the fireworks fly. But take a moment to reflect on how we got here. And more importantly, why.

A writer/editor’s slightly snarky and relentless crusade to eliminate grammatical gaffes from our everyday communications

THE WAR On Words A monthly column in which we attempt, however futilely, to defend the English language

COMMON SENSE REVISIONS Two of our erudite readers point out the fallacy of a couple of popular expressions.

• First up, retired teacher Walt DelGiorno, who spotted a story in USA TODAY that contained this sentence: “The agency’s civil rights office has been reduced to a fraction of what it once was.”

Walt, who taught a few math classes during his career, points out that 1/100 and 99/100 are both fractions, but the first equals 1 percent, while the second is 99 percent.

So, Walt says, “If the meaning is to indicate a large reduction, then the expression should be ‘reduced to a small fraction.’”

• Next is long-time reader Larry Kerchner, who bristles at the phrase “walking on eggshells,” which signifies the need to be extremely cautious in one’s actions or words.

Admitting that the phrase is “ubiquitous and even in the dictionary,” he posits, first of all, that it doesn’t make sense.

“If the eggs are already broken,” Larry says, “and ostensibly emptied of their contents, who cares if they’re walked on?

Where’s the challenge, or the worry, or the danger?"

Secondly, citing several sources, including The McGrawHill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs, he says: “Walking on eggs, so as not to break them, is more accurate, and pre-dates the ‘eggshells’ version by several centuries.”

MEDIA WATCH • Stephanie Farr, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, writing about the “Crab Couch” created by Philly artist Rose Luardo: “Once just a regular white sofa that was looking for a new home on Facebook Marketplace, Luardo . . . rescued the couch and Frankenstein-ed that couch into a comfy crustacean.” With words like “Frankensteined” and alliteration like “comfy crustacean,” Stephanie demonstrates why she is one of The Inky’s most creative writers. But, alas, she commits a rare miscue with a misplaced modifier that describes Luardo as a white sofa.

• Similarly, reader Olga Grushin caught this dangler from a BBC News briefing: “A 1960s Aston Martin DB5 — a model immortalized in classic James Bond films — bought second-hand in 1973 and left to rust on a driveway for years, has been returned to its former glory. After

• Safety Marcus Epps, who recently rejoined the Philadelphia Eagles, was quoted in The Philadelphia Inquirer about playing next to Reed Blankenship: “It’s kind of seamless. We already have that repertoire of playing together in the past.” I’m pretty sure Marcus meant rapport.

DEPARTMENT OF REDUNDANCIES DEPT. • Award-winning journalist Larry Nagengast sent in this from the Tallahassee Democrat’s story about Alligator Alcatraz, the immigration detention center in Ochopee, Fla.: “According to the report, punitive punishment at Alligator Alcatraz includes being ‘put in the box,’ described as a 2x2 foot cage-like structure people are put in as punishment . . .”

Apparently, this detention center can be punishing.

• The Reef Seafood & Steak, a north Wilmington restaurant, asks customers to “sign up for email and be the first to get new updates.” Well, I certainly don’t want old updates.

• From a Philadelphia Inquirer editorial: “Let’s not forget he is a convicted felon who was criminally indicted three other times.” Felon: a person who has been convicted of a felony.

• Being a reader of “The War on Words” has made Steve Larrimore hyper aware of redundancies. So, when he used the term unrelenting onslaught in a recent Facebook post, he had second thoughts. Looking up onslaught, he found that it means unrelenting attack. He quickly deleted the redundancy from his post.

Erratum: In the discussion last month of the redundancy “Please RSVP,”

we mistakenly added an s to the first word in the phrase “répondez s'il vous plaît,”making it réspondez.

id you know January is National Train Your Dog Month? While it might not come with fireworks or confetti, it does bring something just as powerful: a chance to strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Training isn’t about having the “perfect” pet... It’s about communication, confidence, and creating a home where everyone understands the rules of the road. And while dogs are often the stars of training conversations, it’s worth noting that cats are trainable too, especially when positive reinforcement is part of the plan.

We recommend you start with the basics… Sit: a foundation behavior that promotes impulse control and focus; stay: helps keep dogs safe and teaches patience in exciting situations; come: one of the most important safety cues, whether you’re in the backyard or out on a walk; leave it: a lifesaver for curious noses tempted by dropped food or unsafe objects; and finally, loose-leash walking: which makes daily walks more enjoyable and less of a tug-of-war exercise!

These cues don’t just make life easier. They give dogs clarity and confidence, which often reduces unwanted behaviors naturally.

Training also isn’t a one-time event. It’s an ongoing practice woven into daily life. Short, fun sessions are far more effective than marathon drills, and consistency matters more than perfection.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION OF HISTORIC AERIAL PHOTOS

T

he Delaware City Library is marking Delaware City’s Bicentennial Year in 2026 with a special exhibition, An Aerial Photographic Retrospective of Delaware City from the Early 20th Century, opening Jan. 9 from 5–9 p.m. The month-long exhibit showcases the daring work of Benjamin Gardner “BG” Carpenter, who captured sweeping aerial views of Delaware City, Fort DuPont, the Port of Wilmington, and surrounding landscapes using a 45-pound camera while leaning out of a biplane. The opening reception will feature Carpenter’s grandson, photographer Ben Fournier, who curated the exhibition, and will debut an original aerial film of the Delaware City area created by his grandfather.

Selected photographs will be available for purchase.

Proceeds support the library.

JIM CARA’S SWEET, SMOKIN’ KISS OF SUCCESS

I

t’s been a busy but rewarding few months for area custom-guitar maker Jim Cara.

On Tuesday, December 23, CBS aired the Kennedy Center Honors, in which the classic rock band KISS was inducted into the Kennedy Center.

It was then that the world saw the results of Cara’s hard work: a replica of the classic Ace Frehley KISS guitar that smokes while played. The guitar is currently slated to become a permanent fixture at the center.

Cara had the opportunity to personally test the guitar live a few weeks prior while playing onstage during the Holidaze Rock concert performed by Kategory 5 & Friends at the Baby Grand on Sunday, November 30.

During a rollicking version of Chuck Berry’s “Run, Run Rudolph,” Cara performed a blistering solo during which stage-lighted smoke coiled out of the guitar, to the surprise and delight of the show’s guests.

“It’s the [same] guitar I used at the Christmas show, but with a stadium-quality machine installed,” Cara says.

A custom-guitar maker for more than 45 years, Cara has spent more than a decade making custom guitars for KISS bassist Gene Simmons as well as Frehley, who passed away in October.

his year, as locals and visitors make their way to Wilmington’s downtown theaters, restaurants, music venues and shops, many may be unaware of all the history they pass by — particularly in the section of the 500 block of Market Street.

There, one can find a small block of some of Delaware’s oldest buildings as well as the site that was chosen to commemorate one of the most respected heroes of the American Revolution.

Appropriately, the 500 block is also where one can find the Delaware Historical Society, next door to a cozy area called Willingtown Square.

Held on the 4th Wednesday of every month (except December), Nerd Nite Wilmington is a 21-andover, two-hour event featuring entertaining and obsessively-nerdy presentations by professionals and professional hobbyists on topics that run the gamut — from weird to niche to mundane. Part of the international Nerd Nite movement, Nerd Nite Wilmington events benefit the Delaware Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS). Each event includes three presentations from passionate speakers, followed by brief Q&A sessions . . . and a beer break.

The events began in January 2024 as an idea of Patrick Wittwer, who worked as the assistant director of experience and culture at DMNS. Having attended a Nerd Nite event in Philadelphia, he pitched the concept as a way for the museum to engage with a wider audience in Wilmington.

“I wanted a way to get our content out into the community a little bit more,” says Wittwer, who serves as Nerd Nite boss. “So, I looked into it and got in touch with Matt [Wasowski], who's the creator of Nerd Nite, and we started the ball rolling from there.”

Finding the right host location was the next important step.

“Pat wanted to bring Nerd Nite to Wilmington, and I said, ‘You should do it at Wilmington Brew Works’,” says Jennifer Acord, senior director of advancement and strategic communications at DMNS. “They are so connected with the community, 18 Januar y 2026 | OutAndAboutNow.com

and it would be the perfect place.”

Two years and 22 events later, Nerd Nite is well on its way to becoming a Wilmington staple.

“We love having them, and they bring a great crowd,” says John Fusco, WBW co-founder and vice president of creative/marketing. “Pubs, taverns, and breweries over the history of our country have always been a meeting place for the exchange of ideas. This is no different. It's just a different type of idea. It’s a knowledge movement, and what's not to love about that?”

The events now have a faithful following in the Wilmington-area, attracting attendees who may be equally passionate about a topic or just want to learn something new.

“My goal each month is to have very different talks,” says Wittwer. The key is the presenters don't have to be experts, they just have to be nerdy about it.

The passion that someone who's nerdy about something just comes off and really grabs people. It's infectious.”

This month’s event will be held on Jan. 28 from 6-8 p.m. and features talks on the early stars of animation, what makes conspiracy theories so fascinating, and the political ideology of American house pets. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the DMNS website or at the door.

Ellen Durkan’s Iron Maiden Forge uses blacksmithing methods to create singular works of art

O

f all the striking art in Ellen Durkan’s Wilmington apartment — more than 100 pieces, including coffin-shaped works lined up on one wall, drawings as tall as 8 feet on another, a clay skull with earrings in its eyeholes on the coffee table — the most striking is the gold-painted hors d’oeuvres skirt.

She forged the skirt from steel and copper, in an ornate style befitting Marie Antoinette. It’s made to be worn by a model, who wheels around to pass out hors d’oeuvres or desserts at parties, fundraisers or other events. She’s also made two champagne skirts for passing out the bubbly.

Durkan uses “forged fashion” to describe these skirts and various pieces that make for memorable outfits. She named her business Iron Maiden Forge, wordplay that evokes an apocryphal torture device.

She has studied — and taught — many art forms, with her interest in forged fashion starting around 2008, in grad school, “as stationary dresses with nude models,” she said.

“My work revolves around the body,” she says, noting she often uses her small- to medium-size frame when developing and testing pieces. She later added leather and ribbons to increase usability.

“I’m taking traditional blacksmithing methods that you can use to build tools and other useful, functional items, and I’m converting them into art,” she says. “I’m addressing the human body and autonomy and teaching people how to develop their own ideas, skills and relationship to themselves. I want people to be able to feel like they could express themselves and feel good about their bodies.”

Before Durkan made the skirts, which combine art and utility, she made fantastical metal outfits. Each ensemble includes at least four pieces, such as the skirt, bodice, corset and headpiece. Some pieces hug the body, while others thrust far out, piercing and protecting the personal space around the wearer. She said her influences include Gothic, baroque and art nouveau architecture, and it’s also possible to compare them to Valkyries and the fantasy illustrations of Frank Frazzetta.

scored to haunting music, showcase these outfits in a recent gallery exhibition and a runway show with live models. Her résumé lists more than a dozen runway shows, including multiple ones at French and Australian Fashion Weeks.

So how does it feel to wear these creations? “Powerful,” says Jess McIntern, who estimates that she has modeled the outfits 50 to 100 times, on runways, for photography and at events.

McIntern said people who see her cite “shock and awe, plus admiration.”

“There’s a sense of strength, power and force” wearing them, she says. “The feminine shape is so delicate, but these are aggressive-looking. They’re whimsical yet dangerous, heavy yet approachable. I almost feel like a warrior princess.”

Photographer Joe Hoddinott recalled that he and McIntern met Durkan a decade ago at the Oddball Art Hall at Oddity Bar in Wilmington. He immediately wanted to have McIntern, who’s his partner, model “all this cool stuff.” He compared Durkan to artists H.R. Giger and John Buscema and the style of Conan the Barbarian.

“They’re transformational sorts of pieces,” he said.

“Strong yet beautiful. Protective yet revealing. A decidedly feminine perspective on beauty.”

He’s seen the “war wounds” that models have had from the metal, and he’s tried on a piece or two himself. “You feel empowered, like a superhero.”

Pursuing Her Passion

Durkan is the oldest of nine children in her family. Her siblings are all musically inclined, but they all went for “practical” degrees, she said.

She has three degrees in fine arts: associate’s from the Delaware College of Art and Design, bachelor’s from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and master’s from Towson University. She has a certificate from the Artist-Blacksmith Association of North America but said her blacksmithing skills are mostly self-taught. Her online résumé lists six awards from the Delaware Division of the Arts.

She taught various classes at DCAD for 14 years, until the college closed, and she regularly teaches and demonstrates blacksmithing at workshops, conferences and classes worldwide, including a recurring gig in Whiteford, Md., in Harford County. She also offers private lessons.

And she had an “absolutely wild” experience ensuring the stability and wearability of the dress that Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega’s wore for the 2025 Met Gala. The outfit was made entirely from metal rulers.

Since her apartment is small, Durkan keeps many of her creations in her parents’ North Wilmington home.

That’s where she also built and installed her forge.

And then there’s one more striking piece of art in her apartment: A self-portrait by Jason Talley, a friend from grad school, who died in 2013. It “reminds me not to give up,” she says.

EL TAPATIO It wasn’t that long ago that a Delawarean’s experience with Mexican food was a late-night stop at Jack in the Box for a greasy (albeit delicious) beef taco. Times have changed considerably and now there are dozens (at least) places in Delaware to get good Mexican food. And one of the best, and most authentic, is El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant on Philadelphia Pike between Bellefonte and Claymont. The décor and the menu are rich in Mexican heritage. There are the usual standards — tacos, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, etc. — but even those are done with true Mexican flair. Plus, everything is reasonably priced, including the combo meals, which include rice and refried beans, and go for just $13.75. There are also specials that aren’t typical fare, such as the Molcajete — a chicken breast, carne asado, chorizo, hot dog (!) and cactus. Signs and labels in different scripts, aromas from the massive produce section and fish tanks and varied languages used by staffers and customers contrast with the nearby retail sprawl. The supermarket opened in 2023 in a 45,800-square-foot building that was a Toys R Us. It’s one of seven stores in Greater Philadelphia owned by the Liu family, which dominates the region’s wholesale market for Chinese food. Likewise, the sauce and chimichurri with the picanha steak is as memorable as the beef is tender. But, for me, it’s the mushroom flatbread that makes Roost a place to fly back to most excitedly.

Long-time Wilmington jazzman Gerald Chavis plays homegrown sound with heart

erald Chavis is one of Wilmington’s most respected jazz ambassadors. An endlessly inventive trumpet master with national chops, he has been playing in local studio sessions, concerts, festivals and church services for more than 40 years.

Today he fronts the hard-hitting Gerald Chavis Quintet and performs with national acts at Highmark Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia and other area venues. He’s also a member of the wedding band Soul Patch Philly and directs The Fast Lane, a collective of accomplished Wilmington musicians.

A frequent presence in Philadelphia area recording studios, Chavis is as comfortable behind the board as he is behind the horn, contributing as a producer and session man for a wide range of local and national acts.

“I love what I do, and I’m at a point where it almost sounds good,” he quips. “I wouldn’t trade my memories and experiences for anything.”

Playing It Forward

Chavis’s contributions as an educator, mentor and advocate are no less noteworthy. Throughout his career, he has worked with youth ensembles such as the Wilmington Youth Jazz Band and created showcases for emerging local musicians.

He also spent nearly three decades studying and teaching jazz trumpet at the Christina Cultural Arts Center in Wilmington.

“Now that I’m in my golden years, I’m no longer actively involved there,” he says. “But I serve as an influencer, if you will, and I’m still a resource for anybody who is honestly seeking to learn.”

In his role as a civic leader keeping jazz alive and well in Wilmington, Chavis’s dedication to the success of the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival goes back to the beginning.

Created in 1989 to honor Wilmington’s native son, the annual event brings musicians of every jazz tradition to play in Rodney Square for four days in June.

Not only has Chavis worked behind the scenes to support the festival’s mission, but he has also played on stage and led the Clifford Brown Tribute Big Band performances many times over the years. Today, the band is called The Clifford Brown Festival Orchestra, an outgrowth of The Fast Lane.

“When I and other local jazz musicians first started thinking about having a festival,” he says, “we were performing in different places around the city, so we offered Jazzin’ on the Square, a series of outdoor summer concerts that preceded the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, which came about through a grassroots effort.”

These days, Chavis is less a performer and more a resource for the festival. “I’ve been blessed with opportunities, and I believe there are young players who deserve the same,” he says.

Playing by Ear

Born and raised on Wilmington’s northeast side, Chavis embarked on his musical path at age 9.

“When I was in fourth grade at George Gray Elementary School, I wanted to take up the sax, but the school didn't own any saxophones,” he says. “So, they gave me a clarinet.

That didn’t feel right, so I swapped it for the trombone, but my arms weren’t long enough. That’s when I said, ‘All right — give me the trumpet.’”

What started as a process of elimination quickly became a natural groove. Chavis practiced the trumpet tirelessly, and by age 13 was playing paid gigs. “Each neighborhood in Wilmington had its own band,” he says. “We’d gravitate toward one another and just start rehearsing.”

“Before long, I was working with high school guys playing dance music, R&B, and rock ’n’ roll in packed school auditoriums and dances across the city at a rate of $10 per man,” Chavis says. “At that age, I felt rich.” ($10 in 1968 is equal to $93 in 2025.)

The High Notes

While a student at Wilmington High School, where he played in concert and marching bands, Chavis met school administrator and professional musician Hal Schiff, who exposed him to big-band music while leading a 1973 trip to Europe, which included musicians from several other area high schools.

“I was blessed to be able to go on that trip, and I gained exposure to many New York jazz professionals under Hal Schiff,” he says.

Also, as an aspiring young musician, Chavis was fortunate to catch a glimpse of the business side of the music industry through his father, James.

“My dad earned a living in the trades and couldn’t play a tune, but he was a natural businessman whose hobby was producing music — first R&B, and then later, gospel,” he says.

Consequently, “I’d tag along with my dad to studios and shows in New York, Philly and Atlantic City, and sit in the engineer’s booth or in a corner backstage. I remember watching international performers from backstage at Club Harlem, thinking, ‘One day I’m going to be doing this.’ ”

Catching Fire

After graduating from Wilmington High School, Chavis studied classical and jazz trumpet at Florida

A&M University (FAMU), where he gained a technical foundation before returning to Wilmington to study under jazz trumpet master and educator Robert “Boysie” Lowery.

Known for his unconventional approach to music theory and improvisation, Lowery shaped generations of jazz trumpeters, including the legendary Clifford Brown.

“In my freshman year, the president of the Delaware FAMU Alumni Association gave me a recording of Clifford Brown that changed my entire trajectory,” Chavis says.

“When I listened to that recording, I was blown away — and every time I played it, I heard something different.

That’s what led me to Boysie.”

Through Lowery, Chavis discovered his own style of play. “Boysie didn’t give me the answers to musical puzzles — he wanted me to ‘discover things for myself,’” he says.

“He encouraged me to create my own melody every time: big band, quintet, all kinds of jazz. Everything goes.”

Furthermore, Chavis says, “He taught me patience, which he defined as, 'to be undisturbed by obstacles.’”

Indeed, Chavis wondered if his location in such a small city would become an obstacle to success. He considered moving to New York, but Lowery told him, “It doesn’t matter where you’re playing — it’s about what you’re playing. What’s wrong with here?”

As his studies under Lowery progressed, his phone started ringing.

For example, early in his career, Chavis joined The NewTech Uptown house band. Under the direction of Teddy Pendergrass's bandleader, Sam Reed, NewTech played at the historic Uptown Theater in Philadelphia.

“James Brown, Kool & The Gang, Gladys Knight — all the national and Motown acts came through the Uptown over the years — so I gained a lot of diverse opportunities from that,” Chavis says.

Fellow local trumpet legend Tony “Big Cat” Smith, whom Lowery also mentored, describes Chavis’s sound: “Gerald’s music tells a story. He takes the audience on a journey, and that’s how I know he’s one of the best. His sound speaks straight from his heart.” > Januar y 2026 | OutAndAboutNow.com 37

Playing for the Community

For the fourth year running, his production company, Gerald Chavis Music, presents ensembles of accomplished local jazz musicians who perform concerts at Theatre N in downtown Wilmington on the third Thursday of every month (except January and June).

“Theatre N was open to community-based programming, and I wanted to present world-class concerts in the city,” Chavis says.

A highlight of the series is that it helps introduce young listeners to live jazz close to home. “Kids can get in free with an adult, so we wrap up at 9 p.m. since it’s a school night,” he says.

“There’s nothing greater than when the house is completely attentive — unlike at a bar,” Chavis says. "How you converse with your audience musically — using sound waves to create a chemical change in the listener so that they feel you — that is your art.”

While he’ll forever be known as one of the area’s jazz trumpet greats, with a sound rooted in a small city that played an important role in the origins of the genre, Chavis deflects praise.

“I’m only ever as good as the guys and gals who are supporting me,” he insists. “We’re family. Many of them I’ve known since I was 13.”

He also credits much of his success to his partner and production manager, Linda Pitts, who handles the administrative side of his work. “I couldn't do this without her,” he says.

Summing up his career, Chavis says, “Ultimately, I hope to be known as someone who left the place better than he found it. Every day I thank God for another chance to try to get it right. I’m almost there.”

A Different Kind of Happy Hour THC beverages are on the rise.

The rules are still catching up.

hen Elise Kidd reaches for a drink these days, it’s not wine or beer. Instead, she chooses a lowdose THC beverage.

“I love them. They’re my new go-to instead of alcohol,” says the Arden resident.

Vanity Constance Sanders of Wilmington would agree. She’s tried a variety of THC seltzers. “I can say it’s a sensational and body-elevated feeling,” she says.

Sales of the trending drink should get a boost this month during Dry January, the monthlong movement that encourages consumers to abstain from alcohol. But the lifestyle choice isn’t limited to the first of the year.

National survey data from Gallup and other sources show that 54 percent of U.S. adults reported drinking alcohol in 2025, which means 46 percent of adults did not report drinking alcohol.

Alternative products such as THC-infused seltzers are making it easy to go alcohol-free. They’re also good for business.

“Right now, the fastest-moving products at Franks

Jason Guilano, managing partner with Universal Beverage Importers in New Castle, spearheaded the distribution of THC-infused drinks. He represents about 12 major brands, including the well-known Nowadays, through Prime Beverage Group. He says beverage retailers need the products to stay relevant, especially after the decriminalization of marijuana put a dent in alcohol sales.

Admittedly, some retailers were initially hesitant, says Giuliano, whose team assembled information on the products’ state and federal legality.

He says about half of the state’s offpremises retailers now have one or more THC-infused drinks.

Restaurants, however, remain cautious. The Post in Wilmington’s Forty Acres community carries two brands, including Levitate, which has growing recognition, says owner Dan Sheridan. But most restaurants are waiting for more straightforward state guidelines. They would also need staff policies and procedures, particularly because THC beverages don’t produce an instant effect and can lead to overconsumption if customers aren’t careful. Bartenders would also need a keen eye on customers mixing cocktails and THC-infused seltzers.

THE GRAY AREA As THC-infused beverages grow in popularity, lawmakers are scrambling to catch up. In Delaware, a 2025 bill would have regulated hemp-derived THC drinks in the same manner as alcohol — limiting sales to specific outlets, capping THC levels, and requiring clear labeling — but it was pulled before becoming law, leaving the category largely unregulated.

At the federal level, Congress is moving to close the hemp loophole that allowed most THC beverages to exist. New rules are set to take effect in 2026 that could ban many of today’s products unless a regulated pathway is created.

Many industry experts believe the genie is out of the bottle. “Hemp is a $28 billion business; you can’t shut that down,” Guiliano says. In other states, brands like Levitate are available in coffee shops, bars, and other venues.

“There’s too much money involved for this to go away,” says Galbraith, who supports regulating THC beverages through the same three-tier system used for alcohol. Many expect future regulations to cap hemp-derived THC at about 10 mg per serving.

Masland says uncertainty comes with the territory.

“You have to be really comfortable being uncomfortable,” he says. Still, he remains optimistic. “We feel very, very confident that there’s a clear path for us to get through the regulatory challenge.”

In the meantime, Galbraith buys through a distributor or, for local breweries that can self-distribute, from people he knows, such as 2SP’s team. Pagliaro prioritizes brands that behave as though they are fully regulated.

“It protects the consumer, and frankly, it protects us as a retailer,” he says.

It’s not easy. Pagliaro verifies that products undergo third-party lab testing, comply with federal hemp rules, and accurately list THC content.

“Some manufacturers are fantastic — they’re ahead of the curve and provide full certificate-of-analysis and chain-of-custody documentation,” he says. “Others, not so much.”

The 2SP THC-infused seltzers have a QR code that leads to a landing page with third-party potency results from accredited labs for the specific batch. Every Sun N’ Shade formula goes to an accredited third-party lab, and a law firm reviews the labels.

“We monitor and track our chain of custody for any ingredient we put into the beverage,” Reilly says.

While lobbyists for the wine, beer, and spirits industries might view THC-infused beverages as usurpers — especially when they’re unregulated — Levitate, for one, is not an anti-alcohol brand, Masland maintains.

“We just think there are better options with different outcomes,” he says, “and it’s up to the individual consumer to make those decisions for themselves.”

GUINNESS 0.0 – Irish Stout A perfect NA Stout for winter. Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, the original Guinness recipe with alcohol ranks as one of the lowest at 4% ABV. With this NA version, they use a cold filtration method to extract the remaining 4%, making this beer smooth in character and taste.

LOCAL BREWERIES SERVE UP SEASONAL POURS

ocal breweries are warming up winter with an array of seasonal beers. Wilmington Brew Works brings back Ciderosa Cranberry Sage (6% ABV), blending dry cider with tart cranberries and savory sage for a refreshing twist. Apothecary Brewing in Claymont is offering Special Winter Ale (6.8% ABV), featuring citrusy hops balanced by bold malt and a striking copper hue.

Dew Point Brewing in Yorklyn is barrel-aging select beers, including a Baltic Porter (10% ABV) offering notes of dark fruit, coffee, and chocolate.

While Twisted Irons Brewing in Newark has I’m A Little Teacup Short And Stout (5.1% ABV), a sessionable Irish Dry Stout, and I Must Break You (10.2% ABV), a bourbon barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout with chocolate, vanilla, and oak notes.

In Middletown, Volunteer Brewing Company’s Bolaris Winter Ale (8.5% ABV) is a malty Scotch Wee Heavy with maple, cinnamon, vanilla, and German Polaris hops. SKRATCH OPENS IN TROLLEY SQUARE

W

ith a name that honors the history of its location, Skratch made its official debut December 19 in Trolley Square.

At 1709 Delaware Avenue, Skratch tips its hat to Scratch Magoo’s, the bar which did lively Skratch's General Manager business there for most of its 29 Stan Yau. Photo provided years in operation (1989 to 2018).

It’s also the bar in which Skratch General Manager Stan Yau bartended for many years, often famously taking multiple drink orders at the same time all while cracking jokes with the customers.

“I’ve spent my last three years trying to figure out what’s next,” says Yau, who left the hospitality business two decades ago to work at an executive search firm. “The restaurant and bar business is in my blood, and Wilmington is my home.

“Now I have been given a chance to bring back something special in the industry I love and for the community that I always cared for.”

Look for Skratch to offer new takes on casual fare, while evolving it’s look in the new year. Yau says he looks forward to getting back behind the bar again, and was encouraged by feedback from guests at the soft opening last night.

Cinematic Statement Independent film The Conspiracists puts the state and Delawareans center stage

elaware is embedded on screen and behind the scenes in The Conspiracists, an upcoming film featuring a brother and sister from Delaware planning a conspiracy convention at the Hotel Du Pont.

The sister, Daisy, is played by Terrie Lynne, a Cab Calloway School of the Arts alumna and Cab classmate of Eddie Layfield, one of the film's three executive producers — a trio that includes his wife, Beatriz Naranjo, and Christoper Robert Bruce, a University of Delaware graduate and owner of King Creative, a Wilmington video production service. Guy Wellman, a friend of Bruce from UD who grew up in Newark, is also in the cast.

“We’re bringing a full-scale, Hollywood-style premiere event — red carpet, searchlights, Q&A after,” Bruce says. It drops nationwide Jan. 9 on Amazon Prime and Verizon Fios.

Over 11 intense days in November 2024, 95% of the film was shot in Delaware, making it the first major feature filmed in the state since Dead Poets Society in 1989, the producers say. The other 5% was shot at the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum in Maryland, Naranjo adds.

The independent film was made with union talent for just under $250,000, and it’s the first recipient of a tax rebate from the Delaware Motion Picture and Television Development Commission, the producers say, covering 20% of preproduction and production costs. That rebate was “the spark that really gave the energy and kind of pushed Eddie and Bea to say ‘Yes, let’s do this in Delaware,’ ” Bruce says.

“Independent films are the sweet spots I think that Delaware can provide a home for,” he adds. “And they’re hoping our film will encourage others to do the same.”

Adds Naranjo: “Delaware is the perfect environment logistically to get these sorts of projects off the ground.”

Part of that environment is the wide variety of nearby settings. Easy connections are another part.

“It was really nice to come to Delaware, bring the community together and pull favors from all of our friends and family,” Layfield explains, noting that six Layfields are extras, and his and Naranjo’s Maltipoo, Beans, plays a dog named Theodore.

“The relationship side of Delaware is definitely a real thing,” Bruce says. “It’s not like 6 degrees of separation; it’s 1 to 1½ degrees of separation. … We leveraged those relationships. We were able to get a lot done and open a lot of doors.”

Besides the Hotel Du Pont, scenes were filmed at The Grand, Delaware Tire in Newark, Precious Paws in Elsmere, the Siegel Jewish Community Center in North Wilmington (which was used for the interior space of the ConCon) and various homes. Precious Paws was renamed Bark Ruffalo, which Layfield calls an “Easter egg” related to actor Mark Ruffalo, who has “a small, exciting cameo” via the unheard voice on the other end of a phone call in the film.

Bruce has a long relationship with Wellman, starting with their time at UD (Bruce wore the YouDee outfit, and Wellman was a cheerleader) and later at Delaware Children’s Theatre (Bruce was producing Broadway Santa and he cast Wellman as Blitzen, in his first professional acting role).

In The Conspiracists, Wellman said he was intrigued by the part of Curtis, a nonbeliever whose macho exterior hides a big secret. “I’ve played bad guys before, but Curtis was different, with the jabs and the teasing,” he says.

The Conspiracists is a comedy in the mockumentary style of the TV series The Office and Parks & Rec and Christopher Guest films such as This Is Spinal Tap and Best in Show.

Here’s how it’s described on its website: “When two siblings’ dreams of building an all-inclusive conspiracy convention begin to shatter, it’s up to one of them to put the pieces back together while the other strives to uncover a bigger conspiracy.”

Bruce promises that the film, with a 2020 script by director Michael Perrie Jr. and Lacy Reily, is fun and relatable. It “represents a community of people with different ideas and opinions coming together in a safe space.”

“We’re not poking fun at any conspiracy theories,” Naranjo says.

Lynne took off time from the ensemble of The Book of Mormon on Broadway to make the movie.

“For me to be back here shooting a movie with themes of discovery and community, it really did feel both familiar and nostalgic,” she says. “I used the elements of Delaware for sure, the unhurriedness that Wilmington can have, and I tried to play the opposite of that when it came to Daisy and her desire to bring something she was passionate about to life.

“I also think filming in my hometown in my first feature film was the best thing that could have happened to me. It’s where I’m from, where I have so many deep roots, and practically every day I felt ready and safe.”
