Falling Out of Love Why does the passion between human and automobile sometimes grow cold? By Frank Adkins

6

N

ew love is one of the greatest things we humans can experience. It’s often sparked by physical attraction, but soon becomes so much more. It’s exciting, and it elicits physical reactions including an elevated heart rate, sweaty palms, and a sense of giddy joy. As the relationship progresses it is fun to discover each new thing about the object of one’s affection. Little quirks and idiosyncrasies soon become familiar, and then comforting. Eventually it becomes possible to predict how your love will react to most new situations. Over time you meld together. The above is true of all human love affairs, whether they involve another person or an automobile. While conventional wisdom dictates that automobiles are inanimate, I think we car people will agree that most have personalities, souls and emotions just like us. Bonding with a car can be much the same as bonding with a lover. It could be that you have a favorite make and model, but on the first date – when you slide behind the wheel of particular car for the first time, either it resonates with you or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, a second date is not warranted. Move on. If it does, if a romantic spark ignites the first hint of love, then the embers of a deep and long lasting affection might soon begin to glow. But just as love affairs between humans sometimes hit rough patches, the same can happen between a person and car. Some cars don’t seem to like their owners. They may remain temperamental and uncooperative for as long as they remain with one owner, then prove to be reliable and agreeable when the keys change hands. In these cases, a change of ownership can be the best solution for all parties. About fifteen years ago a friend of mine, Rob, was given a ’72 Duster by a coworker. It had been parked for 10 years, sidelined because its worn ball joints would not pass Pennsylvania state inspection. Rob and I towed the Duster to his house on my rickety tow dolly behind my equally rickety old Dodge truck. He got the car running and did a few things to it, but there was no spark. Soon he traded it to Al, another friend. Al removed the Slant Six and installed a healthy tunnel-rammed 360 along with a heavy duty transmission, rear axle, and a new disc brake system. He tagged the car, and although he drove it sparingly, it performed well and proved reliable. Al also started the body work, but before it was finished he traded it back to Rob in exchange for a ’68 Dart (which I had owned previously). Back in Rob’s ownership, the Duster showed its ugly side. A host of minor annoyances including premature freeze plug leakage began soon after it resumed its residence in Rob’s fleet. Then, one night at Cecil County Dragway, the nearly bulletproof 8 ¾ Sure-Grip differential failed. Sometime after that the Holley carburetor developed a minor fuel leak which led to a fire that destroyed the carburetor, distributor, and engine wiring. Rob fixed the damage and sold the Duster to another friend, Joe (not his real name). Joe was an enthusiastic young man who didn’t have a big budget for the car hobby. To encourage his participation in the hobby Rob allowed him to make payments. Along the way the 360 was plucked and returned to Al, and a later 360 Magnum with a hot cam took its place. When Joe realized he couldn’t make the payments, the car returned to Rob. Finally, he sold it to yet another friend, Mike. Mike’s first car was a ’72 Duster 340, and he had always wanted another one. He has owned this Duster for the last four years, during which time he has made several improvements. Currently it is nearly ready for paint. An avid drag racer, Mike has bracket raced it for the last couple of years, turning consistent 13.9s with a highway friendly 3.23-to-1 rear axle ratio. The Duster has never given him any serious trouble, and he loves the car, but he has other priorities—a beautiful ’70 Charger R/T (a street driven car that runs mid-11s in the quarter mile) and his family heirloom ’71 Hemi Super Bee. (See the August 2015 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines for a full feature on Mike’s Bee.) Mike needs an enclosed car trailer, and selling the Duster will free up both the space and the funds to make that possible.

Through its chain of owners, it seems the Duster was fond of both Mike and Al, but not of Rob. Although it kept returning to Rob, the two were simply not a good match. He did everything he could to place it with a compatible owner. Further, my wife Kristy had wanted a first generation Mustang convertible from the time she was a young girl. After more than 20 years, her dream was finally realized in November 1999 when we bought a ’65 model with a later V-8 and an automatic transmission. It wasn’t show worthy, but it was a decent driver, a car she could enjoy on sunny days, and one we could take to Saturday night cruises without embarrassment. Over the years I built and installed both a 302 and a four-speed, but as time went on she drove it less and less, eventually stopping altogether. She still claimed to love her Mustang and didn’t want to part with it, but she had lost the desire to drive it. Although I had planned to continue making improvements to the car, with numerous other projects and other demands on my time, I relegated the Mustang to jack stands in order to keep the tires from flat-spotting and turned my attention elsewhere. That was in early 2013. We had signed up to run a road rally in May with the Brandywine Motorsport Club, and to my surprise she asked to take the Mustang. I prepared the car to resume driving, and we logged over 200 very enjoyable miles that day. But while we were driving she voiced thoughts of selling the car. I was shocked. She said, “I’ve had my fun with it, but I really want a Duster.” Although Rob had grown understandably frustrated with the Duster’s antics while he had owned it, the Mustang hadn’t done anything wrong. Kristy loved the car when we first got it and she bonded with it, but somehow she had fallen out of love with it. Sometimes it seems that the love between a car and its owner simply fades. I have always grappled with this concept. I have witnessed it many times, but I have never experienced it myself. Love between two people sometimes flickers and dies, but this is often brought about by external influences – a loss of perspective, a demanding career, an affair, a change in priorities that results from growth and change, etc. Those external influences have little to do with the relationship between a car and its owner. How does one come to decide it’s time to sell? I have sold a few cars, but most were ones that I had put together with the intention of selling and, consequently, never deemed “mine.” One that was “mine,” a ’68 Dart GTS convertible, fell victim to divorce 20 years ago. That one still hurts. One other was a ’65 Barracuda Formula S. I had made that one mechanically sound and we loved driving it, but it needed some rust repair and other cosmetic help. For reasons I can’t explain, I never committed to giving it the restoration it deserved. We sold it three years ago, trading up to a ’68 Road Runner. We like the Road Runner better, but we both miss the Barracuda. In the weeks that followed the road rally Kristy looked at several photos of Dusters on the Internet, and she has decided she wants a ’72 model painted In Violet (a purple hue better known by its Dodge moniker Plum Crazy) with a black bucket seat interior, white stripes, and rally wheels. It has to have a healthy V-8, four-speed, and fat tires on the rear. In case you can’t see where this is heading, she wants Mike’s car, but finished her way and with a four-speed in place of the automatic transmission. We have inspected Mike’s car and she has driven it, including a full-throttle blast through a nearly deserted industrial park. Although it needs to be finished and personalized to suit her taste, she is eager for us to bring the car home and to start working on it. We will do so immediately after her Mustang sells, and I am already rounding up the necessary parts. Although her love for the Mustang has grown cool, I know that when it leaves, it will steal a piece of her heart. That’s how it is with exlovers. But I’m happy to see a new love blossoming in its place.

VINTAGE TRANSMISSION REBUILDING VINTAGE CARS FROM ORIGINAL TO MODIFIED

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey Gang,

PERFORMANCE UPGRADES

SINCE 1967

Can you believe we are watching MANUAL TRANSMISSION OVERHAULING the leaves fall already? Where did this cruise season go? However, don’t fear, DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLIES there are still many more events left to close out what has been a great show NEWARK and cruise season. The lack of rain has 2101 OGLETOWN ROAD certainly not helped the plants but NEWARK, DE 19711 has been a blessing for all the great car shows and cruises. I hope winter is easy on us. Let me say to all our cruisers and their families that I wish you the best of holiday seasons and please be safe. One never knows what tomorrow may bring, but maybe, NEW CASTLE just maybe, if you have been a good boy or girl, you might find a shiny new ride under your Christmas tree this year. I wish you all luck on that one. 1 MERIT DRIVE Back to reality. Every car season has drama. It could be the weather, it could NEW CASTLE, DE 19720 be your show is on the same day as another, not enough cars showed up to your event, the food was lousy, no music, you charged to much, and the big one – all the wrong cars got trophies. I have yet to find a system of judging cars and trucks that is totally acceptable to all involved. Car clubs that have members choose cars for trophies are accused of picking their favorites. Peer judging which is the most popular comes down to “if you vote for me I’ll vote for you.” I have heard of some clubs that have hired independent judges to pick winning cars. This is not the most popular for two reasons, first who qualifies that person or persons to be a judge, and second, the cost factor. Nothing is free in this world. Does anybody have an answer as to the best way of selecting trophy winners? Let me know because I see even the most deserving cars have sometimes been snubbed during certain judging procedures. As far as I’m concerned everyone’s a winner! There are still many among us who have earned the phrase “Trophy Hound.” I’m sure you all have heard this and know which these vehicles are. They show up with the intention of winning a trophy. Some owners may even pout if they don’t win. Make no mistake, are they beautiful vehicles, absolutely, but as in anything there is always one better. I believe that a trophy represents much more than just a beautiful car. It represents everything it took that owner to present that car on the show field. The labor pains, the sacrifices, the finances, and even the blood, • Seller Misrepresentation sweat and tears. It may not always be the best, but their support at an event is • Odometer Problems - TMU/Exempt what really counts. Let’s not forget the many owners • Restamping Engines/Trim Tags who don’t even vote for their own car. Just imagine what you could do for a fellow cruiser who hasn’t won anything by casting your vote for • Estate/Divorce Car Problems him or her. He or she won’t know what you have done, but I guarantee it will make you feel good to watch that person walk up and accept the award. Isn’t that what this is all about? Giving and helping others. If it’s not, then folks, we have really missed the boat – or should I say car. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Yes, fun. Let’s all remember that.

Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

The long winter months are a time when our cars lie dormant in the garage while we eagerly await sunshine, warm weather, and rejoining our friends in the car community at various automotive events. By the midpoint of the cold season most of us are giddy with anticipation, but these blustery months can provide muchneeded time to address aspects of maintenance often overlooked during the busy cruising season. It’s a time when we in the mid-Atlantic region can afford to “down” our cars for a while since we wouldn’t be driving them anyway. Most of us utilize the dreary winter to make major improvements including suspension rebuilds, brake system upgrades, engine/trans/axle swap, interior makeover, body and paint. But even if your car doesn’t need any major work, attention to minor details can preserve its appearance and operability. Below is a list of items you might wish to address while the cold wind howls outside.

THE CAR CLINIC “Where you are treated like a patient, not a victim”

302.421.9100 | 59 Germay Dr. | Wilmington, DE 19804

• Thorough detailing, including removal of lights, finish panels, bezels, etc., for cleaning and waxing. Dirt trapped behind bolt-on components can hold moisture, leading to rust and corrosion of bright work. • Remove license plates to clean, polish, and wax the portions of the bumpers behind them. • Remove chrome or alloy wheels for thorough cleaning and polishing. • Polish and wax chrome lug nuts. • Flush brake fluid.

30

• Inspect brake lines, hoses, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, calipers, linings, and hardware. • Clean and repack wheel bearings. • Lube wiper linkage and replace wiper rubber inserts. • Remove door panels and lube window regulators, latches, and linkage. • Inspect all wiring for deteriorated insulation, corroded connections, and damage. • “Nut and bolt” everything – check for loose fasteners in suspension, engine/ trans mounts, etc. • Inspect exhaust system for leakage and badly rusted components. • Thoroughly clean interior. • Inspect tires for damage and dry rot. • Check spare tire inflation and condition. • Check operation of jack. • Flush cooling system. • Inspect core plugs (freeze plugs), hoses, water pump, and radiator seams for signs of leakage. • Service transmission. • Drain and refill rear axle. • Inspect universal joints. • Inspect suspension bushings for deterioration. • Inspect ball joints and steering linkage for worn components. Of course, this is a partial list of the things that you should inspect, but these items are among the easiest to overlook. Spending some time now can help to ensure many months and miles of trouble-free cruising next season. See you then! — By Frank Adkins

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Racks Pub Cruise Life is good sitting on the deck at a friendly pub, having a great sandwich and perhaps a flagon of one’s favorite beverage. It’s also great taking a special ride out for a cruise and enjoying a warm evening of conversation with fellow car buddies. This is the monthly cruise at Racks Pub & Grill in Williamstown, N.J. This pleasant night out is put on each month by the dedicated members of the Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club. The “Knights” are no strangers to fun car events and this one is another feather in their cap of having a causal outing. There is always a great turnout of cars and plenty of room to park them as well listen to the Knights’ DJ “John the Hat” play music. Yes, there are so many great places to have a cruise and we in the hobby are lucky that there are a lot of groups and clubs that take care of cruising activities. Here’s to a fun season of events and the Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club for their contribution to cruising. Check them out at nostalgia-knights.com.

Pennco Tech Car Show We should always remember that there are many devices and machines that make up our everyday environment. When these things are not working correctly we rely on the men and women who are trained to repair them. One of the leading educational training facilities for these specialized occupations is Pennco Tech located in Blackwood, N.J. For the past several years Pennco Tech has teamed up with the Delaware Valley Old Goats Club to stage one very nice car show. This year over 170 cars were registered for the show. The warm weather did not deter the participants from enjoying a great day of automobile eye candy. With this large annual turnout at their show, it’s easy to see that they also have a strong following with their automotive program. To top off a successful show, proceeds from the event went to a selected charity. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Joe Lucca

Kirkwood Highway Cruise Allegedly, there is a law on the books in Newark, Del., that does not allow a person to cruise a stretch of Kirkwood Highway. I assume that law means no joy-riding and wasting gas. Now, being a Jersey boy, I find that a bitter pill to swallow. Highways and streets were made for cars and cars are made for cruising. So how does a cruiser get to enjoy traveling in their ride on a restricted road? Well, you can have a bunch of locations to stop at and travel to each one to park the ride, socialize and go to the next location. Thus the Kirkwood Cruise was born seven years ago and is going strong. There must have been 1,500 cars on the road (going to a destination) and in various parking lots. Many of the participants opened up a lawn chair and sat by the curb watching cruisers going down the highway from place to place. There were even window decals and t-shirts available that stated cruising is not a crime. The police seemed to take the evening in good stride and I’m sure may have appreciated seeing the fine rides that came out for a fun time. There was respect by everyone on the good nature of the evening’s activity. Let’s face it, tooling around in a neat ride is fun. The crime would be not enjoying a cool car.

Rural communities, many times, seem to have that aura of standing still in time while their larger city counterparts give way to the faster world. The charm of small communities is the family-and-friends closeness that comes with living farther away from the “maddening crowd.” Cedarville is a typical rural community in the southern part of the state of New Jersey that has that closeness, reflected by their annual fire department celebration, the annual Chicken Run. Nearly the whole town and many from out of town come to enjoy a classic South Jersey summer barbeque. The chicken BBQ also features a cruise that, this year, attracted over 100 rides. It’s a free car event with no trophies or judging, where every participant is a winner in the sense that they can sit and relax, chat with one another and purchase great barbequed chicken. Music by area DJ Uncle Al Snyder filled the afternoon with good vibrations. What more could one ask for on the second half of summer of 2015 than chillin’ out in the fresh country air and enjoying the sights and sounds of cruising in a special ride.

Greater Bridgeton Amish Market Cruise

Lilliston Ford Show Lilliston Ford is one of those dealerships that every time you walk into their showroom you will find a unique Blue Oval ride displayed along with the new car offerings. I remember, one day, the super fine AC Cobra replica in particular. A Ford dealer, they are pure Blue Oval to the core. So, what is a great way to have a remodeling grand reopening event? Host an all-Ford show, of course. With over 100 fine rides from Model As to contemporary muscle, this was a Ford enthusiasts place to be. Henry Ford’s namesake automobiles were truly a hit with fellow participants and spectators alike. The Lilliston team of Southern New Jersey along with the cooperation of the South Jersey Mustang Club put on a fine show. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 12

Enjoying a leisurely ride in a classic car on country roads that seem almost endless is one definite way to enjoy the hobby. A neat destination is an added benefit to cruising. In the outskirts of Bridgeton in the lush farmland of south Jersey, a new building houses an Amish market. Like every Amish market that I have every visited, there is a plethora of food and tasty treats for those who stop by. So, why not combine the fun of food and cruising together and have a monthly cruise? That is just what happens every first Friday of the month at this Amish Market. Cool car owners roll in to enjoy a late afternoon of relaxing in the sunshine. The cruising hobby has the benefit of so many places to go and travel in a special ride, and the 100 cruisers in their cars can attest to that at this pleasant location. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Fastest Shutter in the East One of the best parts about writing for Cruising is when I can feature members of the car community through photographs. Sometimes, when I go to an event, I hear comments like, “Here comes the guy in the white hat that takes pictures for the magazine.” I really believe that the guys and gals that make up this hobby are the best, and every picture is a car family record. I also realize that many cruisers do not carry a camera with them – so sometimes we have a fun photo shoot of sorts, and I’ll even let them use one of my vintage cameras! — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

CRUISING 101 Well, gang, it’s getting to be that time of year when big blocks run better, and Santa starts checking his list...and the time of year that shows get sparse. There is still plenty of stuff to do through autumn – The Pumpkin Run, Boeing, Media, and this year, a grave yard cruise, where my caddy will fit right in. So don’t start striping the rides down just yet, especially since there are still plenty of parades occurring. Just a thought: Cars were meant to be driven, not stored or tailored. Turn the key, burn some rubber. I know most cars have that much power. Take my friend in his 90s, and his all-stock Model A even can “chirp” tires, so I know you guys can surely comply. Remember to look into the inter-club meetings, they will be popping up after the first of the year. If you are new in this hobby and have any questions, those meetings are great for answers. In a lot of different areas, car guys and gals have gotten together outside of club limits to just eat and talk shop usually at breakfast, whether it be on Saturdays or Sundays, and in some cases during the week. It’s a great way to beat the winter blues. Hopefully the big guy in the red outfit will bring lots of toys this year, but I’m actually looking forward to spring since I hate the cold. I can’t wait to see what pops out of the garages come spring – there is always a good supply of surprises! Have a good and safe holiday season, and don’t forget to send flyers to me. And especially don’t forget the Salem County Fairgrounds season opener on March 20, 2016! Additionally, here is an important cruise for a good cause: Nov. 1 (Sunday) Blue Cruise (aka The Frost Bite Cruise) Vineland High School Parking Lot 3010 Chestnut Ave. & Brewster Rd., Vineland, NJ 08361 12-3pm Show support of local law enforcement. Open to all. Please wear blue to show support. Hosted by SJ Cruisers, music by Uncle Al, and food will be available. For information, contact John at 856-825-3047

IT’S A HOBBY!

F

rom my perspective, it’s been a great season for the old car hobby. There are plenty of shows and cruises to keep a car enthusiast happy just about seven days a week. The word I wish to emphasize is “hobby.” If I may…here is the definition of the word as found in the dictionary: 1. An activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation Please note the words “not as a main occupation.” It seems that people sometimes get a bit carried away on what a hobby is. They occasionally seem too concerned about the number of cars for their event, how much revenue is made and who shows up. I receive many comments for my colleagues about the old car hobby and I take their words seriously. Let’s face it, we all want to announce that our event had the most or the best. But in the end what I feel is most important is the quality of the day in terms of enjoyment. When I meet people I know and even hardly know at a cruise or show, it’s a darn good feeling to shake their hand and share a smile and some casual conversation. I enjoy covering events when I am able to with my trusty Nikon, too. We have a passion for our hobby and it’s the type of activity that really has a strong force behind it. But, we must also temper our passion for cars with the understanding that the hobby should not lead us into arguments or bad feelings toward other people, clubs or organizations. In the scheme of life, it should kept in reasonable perspective. Car events are fun and not life itself. It’s easy to get caught up in the enthusiasm of our classic car interest. Every event is an occasion to share some time with fellow car guys and gals and talk about how to solve the problems of the world. Therefore, isn’t this what it is really all about? In the end we should be thanking Providence (I really do) that we have such a neat past-time and perhaps take the time out to remember that it is a about fun, people, cars and most of all, it’s a hobby. Department of New Activities: There is a new event called the “Chapel Car Cruise” on October 17. Check it out. It’s in a unique location. Department of Holidays: Lots of events for charities from toy drives to food banks in the waning months of this year. Please help those less fortunate.

For those who need to send me information, please forward to:

Department of Patriots: Like cruising and car shows? Thank a soldier for protecting the freedom to do so.

Larry Lazareff 1920 S. Delsea Dr. Unit #6 Vineland, NJ 08360

Department of the City: While you are at it, thank the city workers, police, EMTs, etc., who assist in many events. And so another season starts to wind down. In the remaining months of the year, enjoy the ride and the spirit of the car hobby.
