At Goober’s Garage and Goober’s Diner, you’ll find good eats and plenty of automobile eye-candy

oober’s Garage and Goober’s Diner are must-see stops for every lover of special automobiles. Located at 1203 North Lincoln Street in Wilmington, Delaware, the two sit adjacent to each other. Goober’s Garage is packed with an eclectic mix of fourwheeled art, and the vehicles are rotated into and out of the display regularly. Consequently, no two visits are ever the same.

On the day I stopped by, the weather was nice, so I drove my ’68 Dodge Dart GT. When I arrived, parked outside was a ’63 Dart GT that appeared to have been prepped for auto cross and/or closed circuit road course duty. Later, I learned that it had been owned and built by John Hotchkis, founder of Hotchkis Sport Suspension. It is powered by a raspy-sounding modified Slant Six backed by a four-speed, and it features numerous suspension and brake modifications. A couple of phases of the build can be viewed from Hotchkis’s website.
Inside, I met Ken McNaughton, the caretaker of Goober’s Garage. Over the next couple of hours he guided me through the collection of cars that were currently on display. Every car in the collection has a story, and keeping each car’s history intact is a priority.
Goober’s Garage was the vision of Vance Kershner. As the founder of LabWare, a successful software business with offices in dozens of countries, he had the means to bring his vision of Goober’ Garage to fruition. When acquired, the Goober’s Garage building was a structural mess. One wall had collapsed due to vibrations from the trains that rumbled along the tracks behind the building, and the other walls had been braced with iron. Over the next two years he preserved what was salvageable, and he rebuilt the rest. Then he set out to fill it with cars.
Kershner already owned about 20 cars, but soon that number exploded, and the garage morphed into a museum. He and McNaughton acquired many of the cars at auctions, but they also bought from private sellers and teamed up with others to build a few of the cars in their collection.
“We typically buy cars that are cosmetically presentable,” McNaughton explains. “Then we
make them historically accurate and operable.”
Now with more than 200 cars, the display at the museum is refreshed regularly. The cars that are not on display are stored offsite in various locations.
The name Goober is a throw-back to the lovable mechanic by the same name on the Andy Griffith Show. “It was a kinder and simpler time,” McNaughton says. “That’s the theme we wanted for the garage.”
He also explained that Kershner is a life-long car enthusiast who still owns his first car, a 1973 Plymouth Road Runner. “He now owns five or six ’73 Road Runners,” McNaughton says.
Admission to Goober’s Garage is free. “We try to get the kids interested,” McNaughton says said. “We urge the kids to look at all of the cars, and then pick their favorite. Then we let the parents take each kid’s picture with that car.”
The building is comprised of three rooms, two display rooms and a detail area. One display room contains cars from the 1950s and newer, while the other display room is reserved for pre-1950 vehicles. The first car to greet us was a Hemi powered 1967 Plymouth GTX convertible, one of only 17 examples built and the only one in that color. Nearby sat a NASCAR-inspired Ford Torino Talledega and its sister, a 428 Cobra Jet powered Mercury Cyclone, the only one built with its combination of options. A few feet away sat a 1957 Chevrolet NAPCO four-wheel drive truck. McNaughton explained that earlier in the decade, General Motors didn’t build four-wheel-drive trucks. The Northwestern Auto Parts Company offered kits for the Chevrolet and GMC trucks that converted them to four-wheel drive. By 1957, General Motors brought the NAPCO conversions in-house, and offered them on

new Chevy and GMC trucks.
Sharing the room is Mark Mosley’s four-cylinder Cosworth powered Indy racecar in which he topped 205 MPH during practice befor the 1983 Indianapolis 500. He took 13th place after a spin-out, less than a year before his untimely death due to a traffic accident.
At the front of its row was a 1953 Glasspar fiberglass-bodied car, the only production car built with a V-8 engine. Glasspar was a boat manufacturing company, but in 1949 its owner, Bill Tritt, applied his knowledge of fiberglass to automotive bodies. He launched the first kit fiberglass bodied kit cars prior to the Corvette’s debut.
Another limited production fiberglass car flanks the Glasspar. It is a GT40 inspired CAV (Cape Advanced Vehicles), manufactured in Capetown, South Africa. Other notable cars sharing garage space include a black ‘57 Chevy Bel Air with a 283 topped with two fourbarrel carburetors, a 1956 Packard Caribbean convertible (loaded with options including air suspension!), a ‘66 Corvette, a ‘68 Dodge Charger resto-mod packing a 572 Hemi and a six-speed Tremec, a ‘56 Corvette, and a one-of-fifty 2012 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra CSX. It is the only one in the world powered by an original Cobra 289 V-8. There is also a pair of Dart Karts go-karts, a 1968 and a 1971. They are powered by twin engines, each producing 55 horsepower, capable of rocketing the tiny carts to 120 MPH.
The other room at Goober’s Garage houses numerous pre-1950 cars, including a 1928 Auburn that was ordered with right-hand drive and sent to Uruguay. It returned to the United States in pieces, where it was reassembled. A red 1904 Cadillac Model B sits nearby, as does an 1899 Knox “Porcupine,” so named for the 1750 pins screwed into the single cylinder, which aided in cooling.
Space is shared with a 1929 Packard dual cowl phaeton that served as a New York City parade car. It was owned by Jimmy Walker, who was the mayor of the city during the time that FDR was the governor of New York. Adjacent to it is a 1937 Oldsmobile L37 Saloon Tourer. Oldsmobile built the chassis and everything forward of the firewall, and then it was sent to Maltby Coachbuilders in England to be fitted with its touring body. Three examples were built, but this is the only one that survives.
A 1937 Cord is an example of the first American car with front-wheel drive and pop-up headlights. The one at Goobers Garage is supercharged, as indicated by the pipes protruding from the hood. Numerous other vehicles, including a 1948 Chevrolet Stylemaster and a 1926 Kissel Kar, share space with the aforementioned cars.
Across the parking lot from Goober’s Garage stands Goober’s Diner, a two-story edifice adorned with a period stainless steel exterior and plenty of neon.
“Goober’s Garage opened seven years ago, and the diner opened five years ago,” McNaughton says. “During Covid, restaurants could serve limited numbers of customers. That was disastrous for many of them, but it worked well for us because it provided the opportunity for a soft opening.”
The diner has the capacity to seat over one hundred guests, but the upstairs is often reserved for car club meetings. “The diner was delivered and assembled from seven sections,” Ken said. “It was quite an operation. There is also a basement.”
McNaughton assured me that everything on the menu was good, and from the items I sampled, I happily agreed. With ties to Buckley’s Tavern in Centreville, that should come as no surprise. Goober’s Diner also offers catering services.

Entwined Through Generations Of Time

ocal radio stations have always been an important part of the community they service. They keep us apprised of local events, keep us entertained with local on-air talent, and provide us with pertinent information in case of an emergency. Today we have other alternatives, but when the Wi-Fi goes out, the trusted radio station will still be there belting out the tunes and the local news.
I read with interest recently about the sale of local Vineland, New Jersey radio station WVLT 92.1 FM. I was hopeful that the new ownership would keep everything as is since WVLT is well known as having an oldies format and an old car format. In fact, Cruising Magazine and WVLT have worked together on many occasions to bring you up to date on local car shows in the area. Sadly, I have already seen many changes and the loss of some of the on-air talent. This leads me to believe that the broadcast station will not continue with their current format and will be making changes. It’s heartbreaking for those of us who love the station just as it is. As host of the WVLT radio show “Rapid Transit Radio” from 2019 to 2022, I’ve grown fond of the station, the people, and the format.
All the talk the past few weeks about radio has made me realize just how important and entertaining it is to all of us. After all, quite a few of our favorite car movies have revolved around radio and without it, they never would have had the incredible impact on us automotive enthusiasts that they did. Let’s take a look back at a few of them.
1. AMERICAN GRAFFITI — Directed by George Lucas, this movie embodied the idea of old cars, old music, and car radios. In fact, director Lucas spent a large portion of his movie budget (over $80,000) to secure the rights to 42 different songs. The addition of Wolfman Jack as the local radio station DJ was pure gold as his

classic gravelly voice blasting over the airwaves makes this movie an absolute must-see! The beautiful old hot rods are icing on the cake. The film is set in 1962 but was released in 1973. In 1962, the movie characters believed the future would remain like the present, but the audience in 1973 knew about the tumultuous events that were about to rock America (the Vietnam War, JFK, RFK, and MLK assassinations, etc.). The nostalgic radio hits create an emotional link between the innocent on-screen youths and the knowing audience.
2. VANISHING POINT — Starring Barry Newman as Kowalski, dr iving a white 1970 Dodge Challenger along with Cleavon Little as a counter-culture DJ named Super Soul. Super Soul mythologizes Kowalski as the last American hero and broadcasts his cross-country pursuit to the public. The radio connection is vital as Super Soul provides Kowalski with constant updates on police roadblocks using a police scanner. The two work together to stay one step ahead of the local police. Yes the car is the star, but the radio DJ plays an integral part in this movie. The radio bridges the physical gap between them, evolving from simple background noise to a mutual lifeline.
3. HOLLYWOOD KNIGHTS — Released in 1980 and starring Tony Danza and Michelle Pfeiffer. When Tubby’s Drive-In Diner and cruising hangout faces demolition, a rebellious car club wages an all-out war of pranks and street racing against police and local dignitaries. Think of it as a cross between American Graffiti and Animal House . Once again, local radio is featured. During the opening credits, the voice of DJ Surf Sam announces over radio station KBLA that it is Halloween night 1965. Throughout the movie, these radio broadcasts serve as the story’s timekeeper, counting down to midnight and the eventual 2:00 a.m. closing of the gang's favorite hangout, Tubby's Drive-In.
4. CHRISTINE — Directed by John Carpenter and based on a no vel by Stephen King, Christine is one of the greatest car movies to ever hit the big screen, and the radio is featured prominently — In fact, it’s just as important to the movie as the car is. The car's radio operates on its own, working without keys or a driver. Christine plays specific 1950s rock-and-roll hits to express her thoughts, moods, and threats and the moment the characters hear these classic tunes blare from the speakers, they know they’re in mortal danger and a murderous rampage usually follows. For example, during the finale, Christine mocks the main characters Dennis and Leigh by blasting Danny & the Juniors' "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay" while at the same time trying to kill them. Great stuff! Great movie!
Time will tell us the future of WVLT. As a classic car lover and a classic music lo ver, I can only hope the format continues. Yes, today
we have many new forms of communication and information but there is nothing in this world like turning the radio dial of an old car and listening to the old tunes that come blaring out…unless of course you’re riding in Christine.

During the off season of car activities, cruisers usually look for something automotive to keep the “juices” flowing. A few cruisers got together and made an appointment to go for a tour of a professional restoration facility. They agreed that watching a show-quality ride being constructed and being able to ask the proprietor questions can be a very motivating thing.
Cars and Cigars
Father’s Day is that one day each year that dads all over America can call their own. Well, in the car community, some shows and cruises have dedicated their events to marking this special day.
Enter Tom Rightler who is the owner/operator of Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars located in Bridgeton, NJ. Rightler is no stranger to restoring muscle cars and has animpressive list of clients and accomplishments. It’s also safe to say his passion for the Chevelle served as special inspiration.
Keller Williams Real Estate in Vineland, New Jersey, held its second annual Father’s Day Cars and Cigars, and the show featured some very special offerings for participants. If the enjoyment of a fine hand-rolled cigar was to your liking, they were provided free by Oro Cubano Tobacco Shop. Participants were also treated to complimentary Mexican food prepared by Julio’s on Main.
While at his shop, one guest (Jim Solomon) presented Rightler with his watercolor artwork depicting Rightler’s reconstructed General Lee. A walk-through had guests checking out an area that had an original contemporary Shelby Cobra frame ready for the body (as well as related parts) and assembly to be completed.

Wheels of Thunder Car Show
The Wheels of Thunder Car Club is an organization that has been around for quite some time. This group of car enthusiasts always puts on a quality event, and this year the club, along with the Upper Deerfield Fire Department, staged another great car show.
This year’s event held special significance as it served as a memorial tribute to friend and club member Dave Ridgeway. Dave’s memory was honored by the more than 100 rides that participated in the show.
Like all well-run events, there was no shortage of trophies, food, and giveaways.

Alloway Car Show
Alloway Township is one of those Norman Rockwell-type communities located in southern New Jersey. As a matter of fact, the community was named after a Native American chief.
For the past six years, the Alloway Township Fire Department has hosted a car show open to all vehicles. This year’s event drew more than 50 rides representing all makes and models. The “Burning Rubber Car & Bike Show” also spotlighted the fire company’s own hot-looking antique fire truck.
A summer car show with good food, music, and hometown USA charm makes for a great day of cruising.

Juniper Village Car Show
The Juniper Village Retirement and Assisted Living Center at Washington Square in Sewell, New Jersey, hosted its sixth annual car show.
Classics and specialty rides came out to enjoy a day of bright sunshine, plentiful food, and music courtesy of the Mummers, making for a fun gathering.

Salem County Vo-Tec Car Show
In the “very cool school” department is the Salem County Vocational-Technical School in Woodstown, New Jersey. This educational facility is dedicated to training those wishing to pursue careers in the technical trades.
This year’s event took place on a Friday evening and drew more than 200 rides. It’s really neat to see car events held later in the day to avoid the summer heat, and this one is even more unique because it’s an evening show.
Now in its 10th year, this show goes to show everyone that school is always cool.

Pow Wow Car Show
Before the colonization of southern New Jersey, the region was home to the tribal lands of Native Americans. Their rich culture continues to be shared through the annual Pow Wow, held at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds in Millville, New Jersey.
In addition to sharing the heritage of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Nation, the event also hosts a car show.
The day featured many special activities that combined cultural history with the fun of the cruisin’ car hobby.

SHIFTIN’ GEARS

Irecently attended my 60th high school reunion and caught up with some old car enthusiasts from way back in the day. One topic that came up was the standard bench seat that was once part of a car’s interior. Now I recall that this was what normally came with the car and bucket seats were an option. I remember bench seats — and the days before mandatory seatbelt laws — very well. I also recall cruising down the main street in my hometown of Vineland, New Jersey with that special date sitting next to me on the bench seat. No cavernous valley like that with buckets, just you and your special someone close together for everyone to see. That seat made a statement: “There’s So-and-So and his cool date.”
Today’s generation of driving enthusiasts may never know that cozy feeling of cruising on a seat that stretched from one door to the other.
As I recall this somewhat of a tradition started to disappear when the car companies started to make the bucket seat with a console the cool new way to motor around in your ride. Back in the sixties and early seventies some seat and console combinations were like the Continental Divide. This was especially true if you owned a full-size American ride like a Buick, Cadillac, Ford and so-forth. These sporty behemoths had a console that was wide and festooned with switches that no self-respecting date would dare sit on for fear of impalement.
Who would ever have thought that something that was once a common car feature would disappear from the car offerings and something like two front seats would be the norm. By the way I almost forgot how the mandatory seatbelt laws also helped bring the good old bench seat to a slow demise.
Well, there were many other conversations about the bench seat, and I’ll leave those thoughts to those of you who had your own creative experiences...lol.
So, cruising town main streets if town is, for the most part, now a part of our collective memories. It was a time when we, in our youth, made our own statements through the automobiles we drove. Today, we pay tribute to those same cruising cars that many of us in the old car hobby still own and enjoy.
