Crazy About Cars Reflecting on a lifelong love of automobiles

By Frank Adkins ne of my car friends and I recently discussed our love of cars and, specifically, what spawned that love. We pondered if there was an identifiable, defining moment at which each of us became car enthusiasts.

The truth is, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t a car nut. Many of my earliest memories involve cars — both toys and the real thing. When I was very young, my father drove a ’51 Ford and my mother drove an almost-new ’64 Dodge Dart. The Dart remained through most of my childhood, so I have many memories of it, and it was the first car that I can say I truly bonded with. The Ford had been bought new by my great grandfather, and he had handed it down to my mother when she was 18 and he stopped driving. Sadly, its tenure ended suddenly when I was just six. Even so, I remember studying the contours of the body, the pattern of the seat fabric, the shape of the inside rearview mirror, and the layout of the dashboard. I also remember the sound of the flathead inline six cylinder, especially when lugging up a hill. During my earliest years I also had a red plastic toy replica of an early ‘60s Ford. I don’t remember who gave it to me or when, but it was my constant companion when I was a toddler. When I learned to speak, my father taught me to identify every part of its detailed chassis. Later, I amassed quite a collection of Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. Later still, I built dozens of plastic car models. I also read everything I could get my hands on pertaining to cars, including all the automotive offerings in my elementary school library, novels by Henry Gregor Felsen and even the owner’s manuals from my family’s cars. But by this time, my status as a car enthusiast had been well established. But what, exactly, had happened to initiate that? If there had been one defining moment that changed the direction of my life, what was it? And when had it occurred? I don’t know if I will ever have the answers to those questions, but in my two eldest grandsons I believe I have gained some insight. When Michael, the older boy, was very young, his grandmother and I saw to it that he had a plethora of toy cars. Whenever he came to our house, he ate from plates and drank from sippy cups with renderings of characters from the Cars movies. When Michael was two, his brother Riley was born. Our son and daughter in-law are not “car people,” but as we had done with Michael, we exposed Riley to the car culture. Although they were both growing up in the same house, with the same parents, and their experiences were similar, the difference in the two boys became apparent whenever we took them to a car show or cruise. Within 10 minutes Michael would ask, “When can we go?” It was clear that he’d seen enough and was ready to leave. By contrast, Riley had to see everything. He hadn’t yet learned to talk, but he insisted that I pick him up so he could see the engine and interior of every car. Of course, at the age of two, he couldn’t know what he was looking at. But one thing was clear — he liked what he saw!

I bought a used go-kart when the boys were still much too small to drive it themselves. I took them for rides one at a time, and I let them steer. Michael was indifferent about riding the go-kart, and couldn’t grasp that where he pointed the steering wheel determined our direction. In fact, he didn’t seem to care about our direction or if we ran into the ditch or collided with a mailbox. Despite being two years younger, Riley was a natural, and he couldn’t get enough of the go-kart! He instinctively understood the link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. As the boys grew, Michael showed little interest in cars or anything else with an engine and wheels. Riley was just the opposite. When they and their parents moved to their rural house, their dad bought a pair of four-wheelers. Michael would putt around the yard, driving like an old man at a speed barely faster than a grown man’s gait. Riley, however, knew only one speed —wide open! One day he talked his mother into taking a ride with him, promising her he wouldn’t scare her. When they reached the far corner of the property, he turned around, cranked the throttle, and nearly dumped her off the back as he yanked the front wheels up and rode a wheelie! As the boys grew older, their Mimi and I often invited them both to go to car shows, cruises, and parades with us. Riley jumped at every opportunity while Michael always declined. Clearly, the car bug had bitten Riley hard after it had bypassed Michael altogether. But when had that happened? Was there a specific time or experience, a certain pivotal moment that had shaped the trajectory of his future? If so, I couldn’t identify it. I have come to believe that, like personality traits, the seeds of a person’s interests are present from birth. Life experiences serve as catalysts that cause these seeds to take root and grow, but that only happens if the seeds are already present. In their earliest days both boys had comparable experiences, but only Riley had received the “car gene.” Some years ago, my high school friend Kevin Jones asserted, “Whatever a boy is into when he’s 14, he will be into for the rest of his life.” I had never considered it quite that way, but the more I thought about it, the more I agreed. Kevin isn’t a car guy, but at 14 he was into music, football, and playing guitar. Now 61, he still enjoys football and is a great bass guitar player. At 14, I was counting the minutes until I turned 16, but in the interim I spent my time abusing, fixing, and modifying bicycles and a go-kart, which I sold a year later to buy my first car. As an adult, my love of automobiles became a lifestyle that spawned three automotive related careers: mechanic, educator, and writer/author. I cannot identify the moments that Riley and I each became car guys, but I believe our fates were sealed at birth. I suspect the same is true for most readers of Cruising Magazine.

ou see them seemingly all the time . . . at classic car shows, town square festivals, birthday parties, or even just sitting in parking lots. The ubiquitous food truck or trailer serving everything from BBQ pork to snow cones to hot fresh donuts.

We’ve all stopped for a bite to eat and the food is always delicious with unique recipes and excellent customer service. But what’s it like to be on the other side, to take and serve the orders. Today we’ll find out. DonutNV started out as Cinni-Mini donuts in a kiosk at the Philadelphia Premium Outlets before expanding into the food trailer business and then changing their name. Alex and Amanda Gingold began this company and turned it into an amazing success story. They eventually moved their 8

headquarters from Philadelphia to Orlando, expanded to more than 100 franchises. They work their business every day. They are not corporate bigwigs who sit and bark orders, they’re hard workers who still go out to events and still work in the trenches, so to speak. It’s not unusual to find them working a food trailer, making donut batter, and squeezing lemons for lemonade. They are two of the most down-toearth and accessible people I’ve ever met.

When I decided to begin my journey into the food trailer business, Alex and Amanda drove north from Orlando in a brand-new Ford F-250 diesel, newly wrapped with the company logo, and handed me the keys. They set aside their many responsibilities and trained me personally on the procedures of operating a food trailer. Make no mistake, they didn’t just tell me what to do, they got down, got their clothes dirty, and worked with me to help start a franchise where one didn’t exist. Together, we took a food trailer that had been set aside, cleaned it, refurbished it, stocked it with all the necessary equipment, supplies, and food, and hit the road for four days of events. It was absolutely crazy! Here I was riding around with two of the smartest and down-to-earth people I have ever met — teaching me a business they invented. I felt like the luckiest guy in the world, and I wanted to take it all in and learn as much as I could. The DonutNV model is pure simplicity: donuts and lemonade. That’s it. Of course, there are many different flavors of donuts and a surprising variety of lemonade flavors. And every now and again, they’ll throw a special item into the mix to create additional interest. At our first event, I watched Alex mix the donut batter and Amanda squeezed about two dozen lemons to fill a container full of lemon juice. Naturally that also created a mess of lemon peels. Me, not knowing much of anything, at least knew that those lemon peels were trash and grabbed them to throw away. In the process, I knocked over and spilled the entire container of lemon juice that Amanda had been working on for the past half hour. I was mortified! (Please take note here that if I had done this in one of the many Greek restaurants I’ve worked in over the years, every Greek curse word ever invented and even a few names that hadn’t been invented yet, would have been yelled in my ear like a master drill sergeant.) Amanda, bless her soul, just wanted to make sure I got everything cleaned up so the floor wouldn’t get sticky. Quite the class act. Despite my major error in judgement, we opened the trailer and the people came. They loved peeking in the glass window and watching the hot donuts being made to order. It was impressive watching Alex work the equipment and Amanda work the crowd. She is so good at making customers feel welcome — especially children. She would carefully explain the choices, throw an extra donut in the bag, and make sure every customer understood that their purchase was appreciated. It’s just customer service, a business basic often overlooked today. We continued to work events together and gradually I learned how to make the donuts, how to make the lemonade, and how to treat the customers like they are the most important people on earth — which they are. I was extremely sad to see my friends go back to Orlando after we spent so much time together, but I understood that’s where their life was. In the meantime, it was my job to train my replacement to take over for my eventual departure. He was a very nice man and very friendly. I was hopeful he would pick up the routine quickly as I had, but he had never worked in the food industry before and just didn’t grasp what was necessary to be successful. In addition, he made what may be the worst mistake you can make; he

didn’t secure the trailer to the truck properly and it came undone while in traffic. That’s a mistake that could have cost people their lives. Thankfully, there were no injuries but there was several thousand dollars in damage to the truck and trailer. Amanda had created a detailed checklist to be used before the beginning of each workday to avoid such problems, but it wasn’t followed. While this is a very enjoyable enterprise, there is no room for shortcuts that can cause harm to others. The food trailer business can be great fun with the potential to earn a terrific living for yourself. However, you have to work it, live it, and promote it. If your plan is to show up for an event 15 minutes ahead of time and just open the service window, you won’t make it. What did I learn? Both Alex and Amanda taught me that it’s detailed preparation, thorough cleaning, and having great pride in the service you’re providing that will make you a success in the food trailer business. I’m looking forward to working with them again down the road, and you can be sure I’ll make certain the lid is on the lemon juice container next time.

Cars & Students Shine at Delcastle Show Saturday morning at 8:00 is early. But that’s when the annual Delcastle Vocational High School car show started. The registration totaled 230 cars, trucks and other four-wheeled vehicles. The students sold 50/50s and DJ music was provided. Waterford Township Car Show A great way for communities to celebrate a warm summer day is to host a cool car show. Waterford Township in southern New Jersey held a car and truck show that saw more than 200 rides come out and enjoy the day. There were lots of trophies, plenty of food, and positive enthusiasm galore. Blacktop Villains Fundraiser Car Show

Atlantic County 4-H Fair and Car Show

Alisha’s Five Star Dive Bar was the location for the Blacktop Villains Car Club’s fundraiser car show. The show benefited Magnolias Cancer Care and The Ryan Project and drew a large variety of rides to this fine tavern and eatery in Williamstown, New Jersey. The lot was filled with more than 110 vehicles. Mother Nature provided a pleasant day, and the Villains provided an event to complement it. The Atlantic County 4-H team, located in the heart of southern New Jersey, held its car show on a bright, warm day. More than 70 rides, from cars to trucks, participated in the show. There were also plenty of other things to do and attractions to see, including carnival rides, model train displays, baby parades, and much more. ow many of you recall a simpler time in the car hobby when you visited a car show and when it was time to leave you discovered a boatload of event flyers strewn across the seats and floor? Many of the notices were basic, and focused on the key information of time, date and location of the event. Perhaps it was “fancy” and had a car or two on the flyer to get your attention. It might have had some color or was just a black-and-white sheet run through a copy machine. You may be wondering what I am getting at in this introduction. Well, as an old- guard member of the classic car community, I am starting to see how AI, you know, artificial intelligence, is getting into flyers and their new creative form. Some of the car event flyers that I have seen on the internet make movie posters look like elementary school drawings. The amount of detail and artwork, not to mention color, is really something to behold. Artificial Intelligence in our hobby is a next step I never imagined. However, in the end, the most important thing about an AI-inspired flyer is the inclusion of time, date, place and contact for more information. To further my AI comments, I would like to discuss AI into the world of social media and various car sites. Creators really need to have some knowledge of the hobby when they create so-called copies of cars for whatever they are trying to convey. I’ve seen 1970-era Chevelles that are almost copies of the incredible Hulk and bares little resemblance to the car. Another AI blooper was a car displaying a driving position where the driver’s head was way above the windshield and the car had two headlights on one side and one on the other. My point: artificial intelligence is obviously here to stay. My concern is that it does not get so carried away that we look more at the art and creativity than we do the message. After all, we are here for car activities and events. I do want to learn how to use AI. It’s a remarkable development in technology and it will evolve — just like our hobby.
