A Car Junkie’s Paradox

A lifelong affinity for cool rides is a gift as well as a curse

t’s often impossible to identify a specific event that spurred our infatuation with automobiles, but I think most of us would say the impetus came at a very early age.

Although I grew up in a family that mostly drove Chrysler products, I had some early Ford influences. My mother’s first car was a ’51 Ford that had been gifted to her by my great-grandfather, for the point in his life at which he gave up driving coincided with her high school graduation. A few years later, not long after my parents were married, they purchased a new ’64 Dodge Dart and my father took over the Ford. The following year, I came home from the hospital in the Ford a day or two after my birth. Throughout my early years I loved riding in it, and I still remember the pattern of the seat upholstery as well as the sound of its flathead six. Many of my earliest memories involve that car, but unfortunately it fell victim to a careless driver in a Mustang who made a left turn in front of my father one evening in 1971.

Potential projects are always calling out to me, like this old Ford I came across in Milford, Del.

As a toddler, I had a toy Ford, and my father saw to it that I could identify all of the parts detailed in its chassis including the universal joints, differential, driveshaft, shock absorbers, transmission, etc. I don’t remember the car well enough to know its model year, but I remember that Dad turned it into a convertible after my sister stepped on it and crushed the roof.

When I was eight, I began building car models. In the years that followed, I spent my grass cutting money on dozens of model car kits, but one of my first ones was a green ‘30 Ford Phaeton. It was a four-door with a solid plastic roof molded to resemble a folding canvas top. It was a 1/24-scale replica in factory stock form, with a four-cylinder flathead and black spoked wheels. Soon after, I built a black ’32 Ford coupe street rod. I still remember the classy look of the car pictured on the box — full fenders and running boards with modern aftermarket wheels (Cragars?) and tires. The suspension appeared slightly lowered, and I think the roof might have had a light chop. I was delighted to learn that my grandfather had owned a similar car, though his was a roadster.

By the time I turned 11, I was an avid reader of the Hardy Boys books as well as anything I could find by Henry Felsen. In addition to books on customizing, he published novels for young car enthusiasts. Reading about how the characters in books Hot Rod and Crash Club modified their cars, I began emulating some of their tricks by revisiting the model cars I had built previously, and fitting them with overhead valve V-8s, fat tires, headers, tunnel rams, and any other spare parts I had accumulated. I cannot boast that my creations were always stylish or even feasible from the standpoint of operability, but they served as expressions of my automotive knowledge and creativity at that age. It also helped that my friend, Kevin Pampuch, was into the same sort of stuff that I was, for we often collaborated when we repurposed previously-built models into drag race and dirt track cars. Of course, we sometimes engaged in demolition derbies, and a few of our cars met their demises at the ends of long strings, the other ends of which were tied to our bicycles.

In time Kevin and I shelved our models as we moved on to go-karts, dirt bikes, and eventually real cars. I have been fortunate to own a number of muscle-era Mopars over the last several decades, and he has had a number of interesting rides, too. Several years ago he built a life-sized version of the hot-rod models we used to tinker with, an early ‘30s Ford comprised of pieces from various model years and powered by an old-school flathead V-8. Staying true to his vision, Kevin’s car sports a number of period modifications. Now a talented machinist, metal fabricator, and welder, he has come full circle.

These thoughts paraded through my mind one evening after spotting a forlorn old Ford sitting at an automotive repair shop near Milford, Delaware while on my way home from work. The next morning, I stopped in for a closer look. It was rough, but salvageable. I was whisked back to a time in my youth when I would have given anything to acquire such a car. It was exactly how I pictured the project cars that Henry Felsen’s characters had purchased and, through the love and devotion that only a true car enthusiast knows, transformed into hot-rods worthy of their buddies’ envy.

Of course, I currently have more car projects than I will likely live to finish, but that didn’t stop me from seeking the shop owner and inquiring about the dilapidated old Ford. He explained, “It came with a good title, and I have most of the front end tin work that’s missing. The title is what sealed the deal for me. That’s why I bought it, and I intend to build it.” But as we talked, he mentioned that several other folks had inquired about it, too. We didn’t discuss numbers, but eventually he said, “I don’t really want to sell it, but I guess I could be persuaded to.” Upon hearing those words, I felt my heart leap as if I was 10 years old again.

I would love to own and build this car, but the adult voice in my brain finally broke its silence. It reminded me that my wife, Kristan, would have to be on board first. Furthermore, we have no budget, little time, and no space in the Adkins garage for such a project. The only way to bring home another car such as this would be to sacrifice one of the projects currently residing in the garage, and I am simply not willing to do that. Yes, that’s what the adult voice said.

I shared pictures of the Ford with Kevin, who stated with no hesitation that he had no need for another project. While I admire his conviction to the practical, I do not share it. Despite the jalopy’s current condition, I can envision how I would complete it, and it wouldn’t be much different from the elegant ‘32 Ford coupe model I built in my youth.

Having the vision to see the finished product before the first tool is raised, as well as the skills required to realize that vision, are at once a gift and a curse — the paradox of a car junkie. Too often, the practical adult who resides in the back of my mind states that cars aren’t built on vision alone. Life often seems bent on thwarting our goals, and the unfinished projects in our garage serve as constant reminders. But that enthusiastic pre-teen who lives in my heart screams otherwise. Whose pleas will prevail?

A Scrapbook of Memories

This year, CruisingMagazine is celebrating Carlisle Events. Carlisle is a place where classic car enthusiasts from all over the world gather throughout the year at various events. In part two of our four-part series, Amy Hosier talks about classic cars, her family, and about their experiences together at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals.

In 1969, my dad, Bill Berry, purchased a new 1969 Burnt Orange Plymouth Road Runner. He drove it to show my mom Leta, whom he married and bought their home with in February of 1969 — on her lunch break. Her reply: “That’s a nice looking car, whose is it?” Dad replied: “it’s ours!” He had just bought it.

As time went on that year, my dad was laid off from his job and they had to make a decision — either the house or the car had to go. Well, 56 years later, they are still in the same house. He sold the car to a lady he had worked with. Unfortunately, when he was called back to work, he had to look at his old Road Runner every day. He told his wife that “he would own another Road Runner before he turned 50.”

Fast forward to 1996 and a couple months shy of 50 years old, Dad learned of a nearby 1968 Road Runner coupe that was for sale. By now, I was 22 years old and went to look at the car with him. It was rough and didn’t run, but for $2,000 we towed it home. After adding a little fuel to the carburetor, she fired right up!

The car went into storage for a few years until we could do more. In 2011, we moved the car from storage to my house, fixed it up a bit, and the Road Runner was good to go. Dad drives her often to local car shows, bluegrass concerts and the grocery store. We call her “Fine Lee” as in, she’s finally on the road. It’s also a reference to my mom, as Dad calls her “Lee.”

I am fortunate to have quite a few car friends around the world. For a few years I would see posts from friends who had traveled to Carlisle for the Chrysler Nationals weekend. In 2017, we took our first five hour trip to Carlisle, Pa. We drove the Road Runner the 225 miles to Carlisle Fairgrounds on that Friday. It rained the whole way except the last half mile. With no heat or AC in the car, I kept the roll of paper towels handy to wipe the fog

off the windshield. A half-mile before the fairgrounds, the passenger floor vent blew a mess of pine needles and what looked like old newspaper all over me!

Once on the fairgrounds, we caught up with our group, the Rapid Transit Tour. With the windows still fogged, no passenger side view mirror and big doors, Dad backed up the car but a bit too close to Lou Sitaras’ 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury Highway Pursuit, whom I had not met yet. Dad pulled the car forward to let me out, repositioned the Road Runner, and our weekend began.

So many people all weekend long were saying: Hi Amy. Amy is that really you? These questions were a challenge as I had to ask what car or truck each one of them drove since that’s how I identified everyone. It was that weekend that my car family grew tremendously . . . all because of a car and Carlisle Events.

The year 2018 was my all-time favorite at Carlisle Chrysler Nationals as it was a day full of honors. First, on that Saturday, we learned that our car — and she’s no trailer queen — but OUR car was picked for a Celebrity Choice Award. A huge thank you to Diane Ferro for choosing our 1968 Plymouth Road Runner. On the back of the award in the judges’ comment section, she wrote: “A father-daughter Mopar team. Mopars run in the family and have for generations!”

No one truly sees my dad choke up over things, that’s mom’s job. That day I saw it . . . twice! We were honored to be invited to the Mopar Hall Of Fame induction ceremony dinner and across from the entrance is a beautiful lawn with flowers. Earlier that afternoon, Dave Ferro had asked my dad for the privilege of parking his car among a few others as a display for the entrance. That was the second time in one day I saw my dad choke up. What an honor!

In 2024 the theme for Carlisle was “50 years of Carlisle.” I also happened to celebrate 50 years — of me. The bonus was that I was able to bring my grandson, Ben Berry, with me. Three generations of our family came to the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals that day — Dad, Ben and me. Ben was 13 at the time and the look on his face at seeing more than 3,000 show cars was the same look I had in 2017 — priceless! Ben soaked in all the atmosphere . . . the classics, the newer cars, taking photos, and looking over as many cars and trucks as he could. He even had a meaningful conversation with “Mr. 4 Speed,” Herb McCandless, about buying his first car.

There is so much more to Carlisle Events than just a Chrysler weekend. There are other automotive brand weekends as well. From Ford, General Motors, Imports, Corvettes . . . even spring and fall classic car auctions. I attended an auction at the Carlisle Expo Center across the road from the fairground’s main entrance — very well done!

From an outside perspective, every event I’ve attended has been very well organized. From the behind-the-scenes office folks to the gate people and even the grounds keepers, events manager Ed Buczeskie and his team do an amazing job making sure participants and spectators have an unforgettable weekend.

The friends my family has made have enriched our lives immeasurably and the memories we’ve shared at Carlisle will stay with us forever.

Casual Cruise

Cruisers are the type of people that will not let a good day go to waste. So, on a super nice summer-like day on the last weekend in March, a few cruisers decided to stage an impromptu cruise. The location was in the southern part of Vineland, NJ. The South Vineland Park saw a real variety of rides come out for this casual cruise that started off with an email and a notice to spread the word. Everything from American to foreign cars came out to enjoy. It was not your usual event since there was no music or food — just a time to hangout. Pop-up cruises are fun and are definitely reminders of the old days where one would just park their ride and talk cars.

Eastern Equipment Cruise

In the town of Estell Manor in rural New Jersey, one can find the hydraulic repair service of Eastern Equipment Services. This facility has a comprehensive inventory of all things hydraulic and more.

So to showcase their business, it seemed only fitting to have a cruise. There were plenty of rides that came out to check out the facility, share a balmy day and enjoy great Mexican food. It was a super way to introduce a business and to share a fun time with classic rides.

Cruisin’ In Winter

Syracuse Nationals Celebrates Silver Anniversary

Syracuse Nationals Celebrates Silver Anniversary

During the off season of car activities, cruisers usually look for something automotive to keep the “juices” flowing. A few cruisers got together and made an appointment to go for a tour of a professional restoration facility. They agreed that watching a show-quality ride being constructed and being able to ask the proprietor questions can be a very motivating thing.

The Syracuse Nationals, one of the largest car shows in the Northeast, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in grand style July 18–20.

Since its inception, the Syracuse Nationals has grown into a premier automotive showcase, featuring thousands of classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, and custom builds. Held at the New York State Fairgrounds, this year’s event will feature an exciting lineup of special exhibits, celebrity appearances, live entertainment, and interactive experiences for attendees of all ages.

Enter Tom Rightler who is the owner/operator of Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars located in Bridgeton, NJ. Rightler is no stranger to restoring muscle cars and has animpressive list of clients and accomplishments. It’s also safe to say his passion for the Chevelle served as special inspiration.

While at his shop, one guest (Jim Solomon) presented Rightler with his watercolor artwork depicting Rightler’s reconstructed General Lee. A walk-through had guests checking out an area that had an original contemporary Shelby Cobra frame ready for the body (as well as related parts) and assembly to be completed.

“Reaching 25 years is a huge accomplishment, and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of our participants, vendors, sponsors, and fans,” said Ed Levine, co-owner of Syracuse Nationals. “This year’s Syracuse Nationals will be bigger and better than ever, celebrating the passion and dedication of the car community.”

Visiting a shop that specializes in classic and specialty rides is a great way keep the spirit alive and get to see another side of our hobby. Check out Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars at midatlanticmusclecar.com

“The Syracuse Nationals has always been about more than just cars — it’s about family,” said Grazi Zazzara, co-owner of Syracuse Nationals. “We’re proud to create an event where generations can come together to share their love of classic cars, enjoy exciting attractions, and make lasting memories.”

To commemorate 25 years, the Syracuse Nationals is introducing exclusive anniversary-themed events, including:

• Specialty Car Exhibits showcasing the best of the past 25 years.

• Celebrity Meet-and-Greets with automotive legends and TV personalities.

• Live Music and Entertainment to keep the celebration going all weekend long.

• Expanded Vendor Marketplace with top brands in the automotive industry, over 40 new industry related vendors have been added for this year’s event.

World’s Largest Cruise

(60,000 vehicles . . . Matchbox style)

Many of us who got hooked on cars may have caught the car bug when we were introduced to Matchbox cars. The small rides were imported from England and sold for around 50 cents way back in the day — around 1953. Well, there is a neat museum located in Newfield, NJ. dedicated to all things Matchbox. The Matchbox Road Museum houses more than 60,000 Matchbox vehicles and that includes other products made from this company.

The museum was created through the enthusiasm of Everett Marshall III and is open to the public. Visitors are requested to call for an appointment to come out and visit. If you get really pumped up and want to buy some Matchbox items, some are available for sale. It’s a go-to place for car guys and gals and definitely a place to bring the young ones. It’s not just about cars, it’s about toys that you may not be aware of.

Yes, it‘s the world’s largest cruise and it all can be seen at the Matchbox Road Museum. Visit MatchBox-Road-Museum.hub.biz.

Shoreline Vintage Volks Hangout

Reflections and items of times that have gone by are sometimes relegated to the memories we keep. Fortunately there are places and businesses that help keep those items from yesterday on display — and available to purchase. The Shoreline Vintage Antiques and More store located in the heart of Richland, NJ, is a place where you can buy many items from days gone by.

The proprietors also appreciated vintage rides — Volkswagens in particular. The Shop hosted a Vintage Volks Hangout Day and the classic bugs came out to share a good gathering. The South Jersey VW Club was the featured club of the day. The SJVWC is group that appreciates all rides and welcomes non-VW’s to join in the gathering. Classics and antiques may age but never seem to get old.

Steakouts Spring Car Show

Spring brings many traditional car shows and another great season opener is the Steakouts Homeplate Spring Car Show held at Steakouts Sports Bar in Pittsgrove, NJ. The parking lot was filled with plenty of participants and the there was also a fine meal inside for those cruisers looking to quench their thirst and hunger. Steakouts hosts a variety of car, truck, bike and Jeep events.

Tunnel to Towers Car Show

Car shows and community events are a natural! The Buena Historical Society in southern New Jersey held a crafters and car show festival in early May and the summer-like weather brought out a great turnout of vehicles and artisan/crafters.

The car show segment of the event was sponsored by the Lilliston Auto Group. This automobile organization chose the Tunnel to Towers Foundation as the recipient of the car show proceeds. The Buena Spring Festival team did a great job in their third year for this family fun event.

SHIFTIN’ GEARS

any of us who grew up back in the day may remember the times when we would just meet up somewhere to hang out. For me, these times were in the golden days of the great American muscle car revolution.

Here in my hometown of Vineland in the “state” of South Jersey, we had/have a long main downtown street where we would cruise and show off our rides or just gather to socialize. Well, not too long ago I received an e-mail from a friend announcing that a group of car owners were going to meet at a local park in town to hang out with our cars. This was a gathering that had no DJ or trophies — nor was there any food available. It was just a gathering through word of mouth . . . period!

For the record, there were about 25 cars present and the cool thing about this impromptu cruise was that it was attended by a diverse group of car owners. Some of the rides were old school American muscle, some were exotic (e.g. a cool, black Ferrari) and some young enthusiasts came in their Asian rides. It was quite a diverse group to say the least and it was the most casual and cordial group of cool ride enthusiasts one could meet. The cruisers parked their rides and we strolled past cars we may not have had access to and asked questions and just talked cars. This was about rides with engines that were measured in cubic inches and cubic centimeters.

My point is twofold: First, when a person is a car enthusiast it doesn’t matter what you drive. We all had gasoline in the blood, and it can be found in these enthusiasts no matter what type of vehicle they drive. Second, the idea of a pop up cruise is fun. There are no classes or restrictions, just cars and the opportunity to appreciate them. It was neat to see drivers old and young with their classic and contemporary rides honoring the unspoken rule of no improper driving. It was a special code of cool that was on display.

Yes, enjoying cool cars is most definitely a universal language that when shared, enjoyed and respected by all who participate, makes for a special time and a good vibe for all.

Now that the season is in full swing, get out and enjoy the hobby whether as a spectator or a participant. You just might be bitten by the cool car bug and find yourself looking for a special kind of ride.
