My thesis design studio project was about addressing the problematics of vertical city expansions raised by me during my Thesis research work: “Rooftop Architecture: A Sustainable Alternative for Urban Expansion”.

The perpendicular city was my design response to a specific urban context in the city of Philadelphia, where I explored how roofs can be transformed into sites for vertical sprawl within already existing urban tissues. It is a visionary approach to define how can we redesign the city to become a multi-layered, sustainable, and resilient organism through roof extensions. When I say a design vision, I do not mean in 10 years, or 50 years, but a vision for the next 100 years.

THE 119TH JOHN STEWARDSON MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP IN ARCHITECTURE - 2020

THE PHOENIX OF SOUTH MOUNT HAWKINS MEDIUMS: REVIT ARCHITECTURE - ENSCAPE - PHOTOSHOP

The proposed design is an architecture lhat goes beyond lime conslraints and defines a closed life cycle loop just like the legendary phoenix. The designs main structure is spray fireproofed for il to endure during a fire. After such an incident, the damaged pieces of the structure can be easily replaced thanks to ils tectonic nature. Furthermore, The tectonic structure pieces (5 ft, 3” Square Tubes) can be easily transported to the site and assembled using welding and bolting techniques. The tectonic philosophy combines aesthetic elegance with the minimal necessity imposed by the site conditions.

The rest of the design components are wooden structures that eventually will be burned to ashes during a lire disaster, but will be eventually rebuilt again and restart a new life cycle. The design puis life safety as a priority through implementing fire shelter cacoons that can resist flames until rescue cornes. The cacoon design can hast 4 persans and uses the technology employed in the conventional fire blanket.

Moreover, the design provides a rest stop for hikers and a memorial that commemorate the victims of the California tire disasters and the brave firefighters.

The proposed program includes a seasonal watchtower platform with accommodation for 2 watching staff, a platform for public outreach and sheltering, and a long-term facility for observation and research purposes with ils respective accommodation spaces.

Due to the lack of resources, the design heavily relies on sustainable strategies to produce energy in the form of solar panels. These panels are oriented south and are manually adjustable to harvest the maximum amount of energy. Also, the design provides ways to store water using water tanks for daily usage.
