A YOUNG WOMAN’S STORY Please join us for this One Night Only Celebration with over $3,000FATIGUE in Give-aways, Cocktails, and Hors D’oeuvres. ADRENAL SYNDROME Hi! My name is Vanessa. I am a Veterinary Technician and am constantly staying active with two jobs and playing softball. But back in June 2011, I woke up one morning in terrible pain from my mid back down to both of my legs. My throat would swell up and made it difficult to swallow. Many times I could not hold food down. I became very weak and fatigued. I was even having memory loss! I was not able to walk, stand, or sit for even short periods of time. I was constantly uncomfortable – could not lie down in my bed, wear clothes, not even my shoes. I became totally disabled. I was recommended to go see Dr. Gravante after a year of seeing about 8 different doctors with no diagnosis or explanation of what was happening to me. In June, I started treatment with Dr. Gravante. Within 4-5 days of starting treatment, I was PAIN FREE!!! No more weakness and fatigue. My throat swelling and vomiting issues resolved. Soon after, my sleep issues and memory loss greatly improved. My diagnostic results were phenomenal on my 30 day follow-up visit. I am very thankful to have found Dr. Gravante. I am back to working two jobs and playing softball. I feel better than I ever have in my entire life. Thank you, Dr. Gravante and Staff! Sincerely, Vanessa

On the Cover: German Cuisine and Hospitality found at The Village Corner German Restaurant in Stone Mountain By Heidi Campbell With Octoberfest weeks away, and the brew pub fully operational, the Village Corner German Restaurant, Bakery, and Brewery is anxious to kick off the annual celebration. Beginning Saturday, September 26, when Octoberfest officially kicks off in Munich, and continuing for the first two Saturdays in October, the restaurant will begin its weekend festivities. Oompah-pahpah band members, clad in full lederhosen and dirndls, will provide German musical entertainment for guests on the patio

from noon until 8:00 p.m. Festive competitions will provide additional entertainment as patrons enter Keg-Throwing, Log Sawing, and Hold the Stein contests to win beer steins and t-shirts. “We usually welcome a couple thousand people during our Octoberfest celebrations,” says Carl Friese, one of the owners and operators of the restaurant, “and we hope to hit those numbers again this year. It’s a lot of fun!” The brew pub will also celebrate its year anniversary during Octoberfest. They currently have four brewing tanks, located behind the bar in the tavern, which supply six beers and one cider. “We are designated a brew pub, which means we can serve in-house. I’m still working on growlers,” says Carl, “since the laws recently changed. We offer not only steins but flights as well, so guests can sample four to six different flavors.” Since 1974, founders Hilde and Claus Friese and their three children have worked to build their unique business just outside of Stone Mountain Park. “We didn’t set out to be restauranteurs,” Hilde reveals. “We moved to the States right after college. I was a nurse working in Baltimore, and Claus was working in Washington. We had not planned to move to a place where we couldn’t find crusty bread!” Beginning as the small, wholesale “Basket Bakery” that supplied homemade bread to 80-90 retailers, the Frieses moved to “a little bitty Chalet” where they set out five small tables and opened a bakery counter. By the time Atlanta welcomed the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the Village Corner German Restaurant was in their new location as a full service, European tavern-style restaurant and bakery.

Black Forest cake, apple strudel, in-house brewed beers, freshly baked bread, schnitzel, giant pretzels, and delicious weekly specials are just a few of the popular menu items that keep patrons coming back to the Village Corner. The restaurant, serving all three meals every Tuesday through Sunday (with a special brunch on Sundays), is truly a family-run business. Hilde and Claus have passed the torch to their son, Carl, as they ready themselves for retirement. Carl, a graduate of Johnson & Wales Culinary School, has enjoyed growing up in the restaurant. “When Carl was little,” recalls Hilde, “he used to get into the cupboards and say, ‘What can I create?’ He has always loved cooking.” Continued on page 25

I hope you are off to a great September. Summer is ending and fall is on the way. And with the new season comes my favorite sports season, football. In this September edition, our cover story is on the amazing German Restaurant, Bakery, and Brewery in downtown Stone Mountain. As always, we have a number of top feature stories and articles as well. Our Town continues to grow. We have more writers, referrals, contributors, advertisers, and locations than ever. Why do we grow while others do not? We provide a greater value. Also, Our Town provides a break from this “constantly connected” world, giving you a few peaceful minutes to read about positive community news. The traditional media feeds on the negative things that are happening in our world. You will never see these types of stories in Our Town. My August column focused on media sensationalism vs. the good things that are going on in our community. There is much more that unites us than divides us. Your feedback to that column was wonderful and appreciated. We are making final changes to our website, with the great group of 101WebSiteDesigns. com. So, please hang with us. We are almost done. Feel free to read our online version via your mobile device or computer. Stay connected with us throughout the month through our social channels, where we tweet, share info/news on Facebook, and post videos. Check the channels out (page 6). We have great advertising partners who invest, believe in, and support this community. Please consider where you spend your money and choose an Our Town partner. And tell them that you found them in Our Town. If you love this magazine, then love our advertising partners. We are excited about the future and the best is yet to come. So, stay connected with us. And I wish you a blessed month of September. Enjoy it. Finally, and as always: this is my town, your town, Our Town!

Community Spotlight with Walker Law Firm: Helping Gwinnett Families for Over Thirty Years By Stacye Carroll As a young man with one year of law school under his belt, David Walker spent the summer in Washington, DC, interning for Senator and Watergate Committee member, Herman Talmadge. Arriving one week before impeachment hearings were to begin, David was directed to write a memo to all staff members detailing the investigation. He credits an article in the Washington Post with helping him accomplish the task, and lists Herman Talmadge among the men who most inspired him. “He was very logical, conservative, and plain spoken,” David explains, revealing his own similar characteristics. After obtaining a law degree from the University of Georgia, David worked as a criminal defense attorney for ten years. The amount of time and attention required for each case was just part of the reason he later chose to focus on civil and family law. Helping people is very important to David, which is why Gwinnett Magazine honored him with the title “Best of Gwinnett.” “We can’t always make something go away, but we can make it manageable. I like the idea of somebody walking out of the office with something better than they had before,” he says. David Walker has practiced law in and around Gwinnett County for over thirty years. He has argued in over 140 jury trials and hundreds of bench trials and hearings, and is owner of Walker Law Firm with offices in Duluth and Snellville. He is quick to point out, though, that in this age of digital communication, a trip to the office isn’t always necessary. Clients who call Walker Law Firm for the first time discuss their issue with a paralegal right away. Follow-up appointments and referrals are scheduled as quickly as possible. Experience selling real estate before law school, as well as extensive experience as a closing attorney early in his career, serves David and his clients well. Many real estate cases come about as part of a divorce settlement. As a certified mediator for civil and family law cases, David recommends mediation to clients seeking a divorce. He cites “the big 3” reasons: less stress, less expense, and less time. “Courts are unpredictable,” David says. “With mediation there are no ugly surprises.” According to David, the biggest challenge presented by divorce cases is unrealistic expectations. A prenuptial agreement can prevent problems for property owners. Another option is a postnuptial agreement wherein both parties agree on what would happen in case of a divorce. These are especially common in second marriages, and help provide for children from a previous relationship. The Walker Law Firm can assist with asset protection by establishing a trust or partnership and, according to Walker, LLCs are not just for businesses anymore. Family assets can be dealt with in much the same manner, resulting in ease of transfer when necessary. Many personal injury cases end up in an attorney’s office because the client feels the insurance companies aren’t being helpful. Property damage settlements, in particular, can be difficult. “In the case of an injury, my advice is not to hurry a settlement, because the full extent of the injury may not be apparent immediately,” David says. Estate planning is another service offered by Walker Law Firm. Clients are encouraged to complete the checklist on the firm’s website before their first appointment. When asked what clients most need to know about estate planning, David answers, “What happens if they don’t do anything.” David Sinclair Walker, Jr. is owner of Walker Law Firm. Choosing a GREAT Physical Therapist

TAKE THE NEXT STEP COACHING | CONSULTING | TRAINING

By Jessica Leivers, PT, DPT, OCS, CLT, and Leah Woods, PT, DPT, ATC Your doctor recommended physical therapy – now what? Choosing the correct physical therapist for your condition and goals is vital in order to get the best possible results. But knowing what to look for and understanding the alphabet soup behind a therapist’s name can be daunting. Although all physical therapists have a basic level of training, there are certain designations to look for that indicate advanced expertise in a specific area. An OCS or SCS as part of a physical therapist’s title means he or she is a board-certified orthopedic specialist (dealing with issues of the musculoskeletal system) or a board-certified sports specialist (with regards to sports-related injuries). These therapists have completed continuing education spanning hundreds of hours, and have passed national certification exams in their areas of expertise. This certification helps the therapist assess and treat the issues you’re having, particularly when the issues are more complicated than they seem or when you aren’t responding to the traditional treatment paths. At BenchMark Physical Therapy, we have more board-certified specialists than any other provider in the area. In addition to OCS and SCS, our certifications include athletic training, lymphedema specialist, manual therapist, and ergonomic assessment specialist. With this depth and breadth of expertise on staff, we’re able to make sure that you’re working with a physical therapist who will understand and be able to give you the best possible care. When finding a physical therapist that’s right for you, makes sure to ask about board certifications, other advanced credentialing, residency programs, and special interests. As physical therapists we are trained to treat the entire body, but by seeking out a therapist who specializes in your injuries, you’ll set yourself up for the best possible outcomes.

Accurate Painting Solutions: Southern Workmanship and Quality Guaranteed By Rachael Brice Accurate Painting Solutions (APS) has been in the works ever since James Barrett picked up a paintbrush for the first time when he was ten years old. Taught and mentored by his father, Barrett has owned a few of his own companies and worked for quite a few others, but he particularly loves working with his hands, building house frames, putting up dry wall, and painting. After high school, Barrett went to work for a rock quarry where he stayed for almost ten years until he had a horrific accident where he broke many bones. The outcome allowed Barrett to go back to school and obtain a degree in project management. As a student at Gwinnett Tech, Barrett was also able to turn his love of construction into a job where he taught in the school’s construction department. Upon completing his Associates Degree, he transferred to Southern Polytechnic State University. After obtaining his degree, Barrett went to work with a general contractor and worked a few years as a project manager for some of the bigger commercial construction companies. However, the long hours and time away began to take its toll. He wanted to be home with his family more, so he thought about starting his own painting company. “I know painting, and I’ve been doing it with my father for a long time,” Barrett said. “I had some ideas on ways to improve the business in the Gwinnett community, and I wanted to offer a better finished product to the area’s clientele.” With a vision and a solemn promise to his customers that everything will be taken care of if he and his crew are hired for the job, Barrett started APS in 2012 and hasn’t looked back. Although the company’s name suggests painting services, it actually offers much more, including drywall repair, wallpaper installation and removal, pressure washing, gutter work, kitchen and bathroom remodels, garage door installation and repair, and deck and roof repairs. “I like to think I am a man of many trades,” Barrett said. “I hold my crews to a high standard and hire them with the knowledge they will get the job done and provide our customers with high quality service and products.” While Barrett oversees his various crews and multiple simultaneously occurring projects, Continued on page 18

Sports Talk with: Jon Stinchcomb of NG3

www.momslilburn.com

MUSIC LESSONS Instruments & Repairs

By Perry Rosenbaum Nobody knows better how difficult life during and after professional sports can be than those who have actually been professional athletes. They know the trials and tribulations they faced are indicative of the challenges faced by most of their peers. More importantly, having gone through these struggles themselves, they’re well-qualified to help guide the next generation of athletes, hoping to shape them into even better people. To that end, NG3 (Next Generation: Character, Community, and Change) works tirelessly to ensure burgeoning athletes in Gwinnett County become superstars both on and off the field. The organization, founded by Matt Williams in 2011, aims to help mold student athletes into well-rounded people who can achieve and maintain success in the real world whenever their playing days come to an end. “It’s a continuous process,” Jon Stinchcomb, former NFL player and NG3 director of operations, says as he explains what the organization does. “It’s all about building a relationship with these kids and letting them know that they have a strong support system.” Of course, the goals of NG3 go beyond simple support. Character building and development are the two strongest tenets of their process, and the leader at each school works tirelessly to advance the organization’s positive message. NG3 currently operates in four Gwinnett County high schools: Brookwood, Grayson, South Gwinnett, and Parkview. In each location, a member of the organization leads the effort: Williams at Brookwood, Javier Munoz at Parkview, Dustin Mattox at Grayson, and Michael Woelfl at South Gwinnett. It’s no surprise that these schools in particular are so successful when it comes to fielding contenders. The guidance they receive through NG3 has proven to be invaluable time and again. Stinchcomb, a Parkview grad who says “coming home to Gwinnett and being able to work with such a meaningful organization is just tremendous,” attributes this to the strong bonds fostered in the clubhouse. “These kids come from all backgrounds, many different walks of life,” he says. “But when they’re in the locker room, they come together as one. It’s amazing to watch them support each other unfailingly.” Stinchcomb believes that self-awareness is one of the most important traits a young athlete can acquire. “It’s critical to know who you are and whose you are,” Stinchcomb opines. “Having stability during adolescence is key to positive growth. We want to ensure that every student involved in NG3 knows just how important they are in the lives of their family and friends, as well as their importance to their team and sport.” Beyond that, the organization stresses the importance of knowing yourself and your responsibilities. Stinchcomb quotes the Bible, saying, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” This no doubt helps young athletes recognize that they have more value than what can be quantified by statistics. Again, these methods appear to be working quite well, as several students who have come under NG3’s tutelage (as well as the coaches for whom they play) praise the organization’s efficacy on their website. The men and women who work with NG3 are as grateful as the students they help to have the opportunity to make such a positive impact in their community. “I feel like I’ve received more guidance and love than I’ve given during my time here,” Stinchcomb says wistfully. The organization does so many great things, that it’s only a matter of time before they join with more Gwinnett schools to spread their message. More info: www.ng3.org

One on One with: Carmen Stewart of African Hope Crafts By Perry Rosenbaum Carmen Stewart is answering the clarion call of compassion, utilizing her connections to bring about positive change and quality of life for as many fellow humans as possible. Carmen, a distributor for African Hope Crafts, uses her space at the annual Lilburn Daze festival to spread the word of helping the less fortunate throughout Gwinnett County. “These pieces of jewelry are made by women in small African villages,” she explains, “and then transported across the ocean for us to sell here. All the proceeds go toward improving the lives of these crafters and their families.” After Carmen and her family moved to Gwinnett in 2012, she partnered with the Lilburn Woman’s Club to sell this beautiful jewelry. “I was blown away by how gorgeous and sturdy the jewelry was. I knew I had to get involved, and the Lilburn Daze Festival provides us with a wonderful opportunity to sell our wares and spread the word.” Carmen has made the excursion to South Africa (Cape Town specifically) to transport the jewelry in the past, and she says that the trip was tremendously life-changing. “We get to spend time with the families that the program benefits,” she says. “It’s incredible to see the tangible benefits of what we’re doing. The main point of this endeavor is enabling people in these villages to work for themselves, gaining the skills necessary to survive.” As many of the people involved with AHC are afflicted with HIV/AIDS, the proceeds from selling their wares also allow them an opportunity to access medicine and healthcare that they may not receive otherwise. Although AHC is based out of Michigan, Carmen and distributors around the country work tirelessly to get these ornate pieces of jewelry out to as many interested customers as possible. In addition to the jewelry, AHC members also create purses, scarves, and other various sundries. The products available for purchase are moderately priced, and Carmen vouches for their topnotch quality. “AHC supports their crafters as much as possible to ensure the sturdiness and reliability of everything they sell,” she relates. Lilburn Daze is not the only place in Gwinnett where consumers can purchase these treContinued on page 23

Catching Up with BHS Graduate, NFL linebacker, and Author Rennie Curran By Heidi Campbell “Right now, I’m still chasing my dream of playing football,” says linebacker Rennie Curran, who will soon enter his sixth year as a pro athlete. “I hope to play professional football for another three to five years.” After graduating from Brookwood High School in 2007, Curran headed to Athens as the Bulldogs’ newest linebacker, where he became one of the top ten linebackers in UGA history. In 2010, he was drafted by the Tennessee Titans. His football career continued briefly with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012, followed by a successful run with the Edmonton Eskimos in 20132014. “The most amazing part of being in the NFL,” Curran shares, “was being able to help my family, my church, and my community. The impact and the platform you are given to influence and inspire many different people is one of the most fulfilling things.” Curran is a proud father to his six-year-old daughter, Eleana, a pianist and a drummer, an author, a motivational speaker, a coach, and a philanthropist. Although Curran left UGA to chase his professional dreams, he says, “I return every spring to work toward finishing my degree in business management and music business. Once my football career is over, I want to get more involved in the music industry.” While Curran awaits his next chapter, he is far from idle. When he’s not on the field, he is building his career as a professional speaker and author. He says, “I love speaking at schools, churches, and business events.” In 2013, he published his first book, Free Agent, and he says he is “…currently working to get it into every school in Georgia and eventually the entire US.” Curran dedicates a tremendous amount of time giving back to his community. He volunteers to important causes including childhood cancer, bullying, and leadership. Most recently he has been doing some life coaching, which he says is one of the most gratifying things he’s been able to do. “Since so many people helped me to get where I am,” Curran says, “it is a great feeling to be able to do the same thing for someone else.” Continued on page 25

PACING, Rhythm, and Kick By Jane Bishop, Life Coach/Speaker “Runners, you are thirty seconds from starting!” With these words, my adrenalin accelerated with my excitement and anticipation. Lost in visualizing my starting line plan, I was brought back to reality with these words: “Due to lightening in the area, the race is suspended for thirty minutes.” Wow! How would this impact my race? Gathered with hundreds of runners in a parking deck, I focused my mindset on my plan. It was important to stay relaxed, enjoy the moment, and view this as part of the adventure. Establishing a specific pace at the beginning that would help me accomplish my goal had not changed; only the timing had. Pacing is critical as it sets the stage for the body to be efficient in using the fuel at the necessary rate to reach the goal. Learning to pace myself is one of the most critical skills to learn. Pacing impacts a fine margin between success and failure. Start too fast and fuel burns out before the end of the race. Start too slow and the goal may not be achieved. Establishing the pace for me involves: trusting my preparation, patience, and not allowing myself to compete with other runners, which can derail my pace. What are the applications for life? If I live with the mindset of “having it all,” the possibility of success with fulfillment is low. If I live knowing I can have it all, simply not all at once, the possibility of success with fulfillment is much greater. Living4ward is about setting your pace that leads you to live life to the fullest. What would be helpful for you to set or reset your pace? Check in next month to learn how establishing your pace creates rhythm for living4ward. Jane Bishop is Owner/CEO of Take The Next Step. More information at www.takethenextstepcct.com.

Southern Styles Salon: Where Inspiration Thrives By Stacye Carroll As a kid, Gerald Spivey probably rode past the building now housing his salon, Southern Styles, countless times. His family moved to Snellville from the Avondale area in 1971. His first experience styling hair came while in high school. “I just always did everyone’s hair,” he says. “I was good at it.” He must have been very good. He styled his high school sweetheart’s hair for prom, and they’re still married today. Gerald studied commercial art at Massey Junior College and worked in the field for several months before the business closed, leaving Gerald unemployed. His sister, who had recently graduated from cosmetology school, suggested Gerald study the same. Night classes were a big draw since he now had a family to support. After graduation, he worked at a local salon for four years before opening Southern Styles. Now thirty-three years later, Gerald says the best thing about owning his own salon is not having to answer to anyone else. Calling upon his art education and twenty-nine years of experience as an educator and show artist for Scruples hair care products, Gerald is a color specialist. “Clients come here to fix color,” he says. Continued education is very important to both Gerald and Leslie, a stylist at Southern Styles for over twenty years. Chunky highlights have been popular for some time, but according to Gerald, the trend is shifting toward more natural color. Southern Styles offers Balayage, a highlighting method in which color is painted onto the hair for a more natural, sun-kissed appearance, and Baby-Lights, a micropainting technique many celebrities use for a more delicate look. “The right cut Continued on page 23

Continued from page 10 he continues to pursue project management, as he has fostered many connections over the years around the Gwinnett area and beyond. He enjoys working with realtors and his customers to prepare houses going both on and off the market, which brings him great satisfaction. “I like staying busy and talking to clients, though I can sometimes talk too much,” he admits. A satisfied customer is Barrett’s highest priority. He and his crew work to attain this goal with each project, and are always motivated to do their best. They promise Southern workmanship and quality for all, and aim to make each project a positive experience no matter how large or small. “Being able to fix something and have someone tell you it looks great and that they’re pleased with the results is a wonderful reward that comes with the job,” Barrett said. “That’s the reason why I’m in this business and love what I do. I love making people happy through the work my team and I accomplish.” When Barrett isn’t laying tile, working on a deck, or scheduling his employees for the next project, he enjoys managing the majors baseball team for eleven and twelve-year-old boys at Mountain Park. “Giving back to the community is important, no matter how busy you are,” Barrett said. Although APS’s business has exploded over the past six months, Barrett continues to forge ahead and believes the company’s future looks bright as it shifts its focus on what lies ahead. Curb Appeal: The Ultimate First Impression By Dana Pike Van Vlake Are you hoping to sell your home quickly? Do you want to impress your neighbors? Curb appeal includes everything between your front door and the street. With a few simple updates, tips and tricks, you can create eye-catching beauty and interest. The Front Door – Drawing attention to your front door is crucial. To highlight this important feature, the surrounding area must be neat and clean. Quick updates can be as simple as placing colorful container gardens near the door, adding a bright welcome mat, and arranging coordinating pillows on any porch seating. A fresh coat of paint and a seasonal wreath adds drama. Container Gardens – Container gardens add instant lushness and color, as well as make your house stand out. Coordinate the colors and textures of your home when deciding which plants to use. Choose a dramatic container and plants that will accent your entryway. Mailbox Area – The mailbox is the first part of your house that people see. It is extremely important that it stands up straight and that your house number is clearly visible. Plant flowers around your mailbox that match the ones near the house in order to create a unified visual experience. A Few Other Tips – Weeding and edging your lawn, mailbox area, and flowerbeds regularly are a must. Try doing a little each week to keep the workload to a minimum. In addition, prune shrubs and put down fresh mulch wherever needed. This offers a finished, manicured look. These small changes are easy to implement, and they have a tremendous impact on the overall appeal of your home. Fitness Foundations: Women and Weights By Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT I have owned and operated a successful ladies gym for twenty years. In that time the social stigmas and misinformation surrounding women and weight lifting have lessened, yet the vast majority of women are still hesitant to take part in a weight lifting program. Setting sexual stereotypes aside, let’s address the facts. Women physically cannot achieve muscle hypertrophy (enlargement) to the extent that men do. To truly “bulk up” is not advisable for both health as well as legal reasons. But women can create visible muscle definition. Here are a few important reasons why women should be lifting weights. Strength training over a period of time can help prevent bone loss. It has been shown to generate new bone growth. That’s right! Your eighty-year-old granny with osteoporosis needs to be lifting. Muscle is more active and energy-demanding than fat, so if you have a higher percentage of muscle compared to fat, you will have a higher Basal Metabolic Rate (shapefit.com). Sadly, we lose muscle as we age. By age seventy we have potentially lost 50% of our muscle mass. Don’t take this lying down. Pick up a weight! Women need functional fitness to get through their everyday lives: groceries; yard work; lifting children; changing a tire. Having the strength for these activities helps prevent back and shoulder injuries. Muscles maintain better balance which prevents falls as we age. Think of weights as FUNctional training. If it is fun you are more likely to keep it going. Remember, healthy and strong is beautiful! Live long and lift heavy! First, find a professional trainer, and then GO FOR IT! Kelly Farris is the owner of Ladies Workout Snellville and the President of KLF Fitness. More information at ladiesworkoutsnellville.com.

and color can actually make a face look more symmetrical,” says Gerald. Before making major changes, he guides clients through a “self-tour” and uses a swatch book to match color to skin tone. Whether you’re looking for a splash of color or a fuller head of hair, Southern Styles has the extensions you need to make you look like you were “born this way,” and customers interested in purchasing a wig can usually have it delivered in just one day. Believing “no one should have to wear an un-styled wig,” Gerald prefers to order a wig just a little longer than the client’s desired hair style and then cut and style it while the client is wearing it. Gerald’s devotion to his three granddaughters, aged 4, 9, and 19, is evident in the anime drawings displayed in the salon’s waiting area and the recent addition of an Enchanted Forest Party Room. Here Gerald once again called upon his artistic background to create a wonderland for fairies and princesses looking to celebrate with friends. Up to nine guests get to have their faces painted, take turns at the “Mirror Mirror” on the wall, and play games such as pin the horn on the unicorn, while the Princess of Honor has her hair styled. Freshly coiffed, the princess is then presented to the party wearing a tiara. Parties in the Enchanted Forest Party Room include a choice of entree, favors, and a chance for each guest to fill a bag with treats. Parents of party-goers are encouraged to take a look around the gift shop where more of Gerald’s considerable talents are on display. Besides a large collection of handmade jewelry, shoppers will find infinity scarves in a rainbow of colors, floral arrangements, and throw pillows. Carmen also maintains a presence at Mountain Park United Methodist, Briarlake Elementary, and Oak Grove, among others. “For me, it’s a matter of compassion,” she says. “There are so many people in the world who rely on the kindness of others. If I have the capabilities to improve just one life, I’ve done my share.” Certainly, her efforts, and the efforts of everyone involved with the organization, do not go unnoticed. To create such a positive impact in the lives of so many is a special skill, and Carmen is just one of many who yearn to spread this message.
