Stephanie’s Story If you read last month’s article from Connie, interestingly enough, I found out about Dr. Gravante through Connie. I am sure glad that I did!

This past year was full of life changing events for me. I got a new job, bought a piece of property with my fiancé, got married, and was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease.

A few months ago I was told that I have a hereditary hyper thyroid disease and that the only treatment option is a trial of medicine for one year to see if it will help my thyroid levels normalize. This is not what you want to hear at my age of 27 years. I was also told that if the medicine does not work, I would need to do a radioactive iodine treatment to kill my thyroid from producing hormones and result in taking medicine for the rest of my life. On the Cover: Rivals on Five: A Community Success Story

By Stacye Carroll Though it seems like Rivals on Five has occupied the corner of Five Forks Trickum and Rockbridge roads for a long time, the restaurant opened its doors just a little over five months ago. In that time they’ve served over 7,000 burgers and 3,000 blue plates, which according to Chef Jon Allen, is pretty remarkable.

“Support from this community has been awesome,” says Jon. “We were full on our first night and every night since.”

It’s unusual for a new restaurant to enjoy this kind of popularity right from the start, and Jon and co-owners Scott Marshall, Will Draper, and Lee Burton are grateful for the support. Since their triumphant opening night, changes have been made to the menu, such as moving the very popular Southern Pork and Waffle from the small plates to the entrée section.

“We realized most people were ordering it as an entrée,” says Jon. Customer feedback drives menu decisions. Many new offerings, such as the Pork Chop and Strip Steak entrées, started out as Blue Plate Specials that became menu staples through customer demand.

Seasonality is another factor in the Rivals’ menu. As of June 1, diners will notice new cocktails and lighter choices such as seasonal fish, and, in a measure that will benefit diners and area farmers, Jon hopes to incorporate more local produce into the dishes they serve.

All food served at Rivals on Five is made fresh from scratch. When asked to describe his culinary style, Jon says, “Let the food be the food. I cook here the way I cook at home: simple flavors, always fresh.”

Rivals always serves at least one gluten-free vegetable and soup every day. Their glutenfree wraps are also popular. Other items can be ordered gluten-free and are noted on the menu. Aware that the number of diners choosing to eat this way is on the rise, Jon is always on the lookout for new menu options.

The top deck of the restaurant is open, and while I was there I watched Will Draper, Lee Burton, and several others arrange tables and chairs on the patio. Plans are in the works

to provide music for both outdoor dining areas. These improvements are part of the owners’ goal to make Rivals on Five a true destination.

Inside, the dining room is divided into two distinct areas with two different focal points. On the left, a back-lit bar featuring large photos of historic sports figures dominates a space filled with communal tables that encourage the kind of interaction often enjoyed after a local ball game. An enormous wine rack separates the bar from the right side of the restaurant, where diners can enjoy a much quieter atmosphere. Walls of windows provide natural lighting throughout, and strategically placed high-definition televisions ensure that anyone sitting anywhere can see a screen.

“One of our main original goals,” says Will Draper, “was to combine fine dining with sports enjoyment.”

If you’ve never been to Rivals on Five, drop in at six on a Friday night to get the full Rivals’ experience. Bring friends and order three or four small plates before settling on an entrée to share. If you’re a regular you’ll be excited to hear that Rivals plans to serve family-style tailgates during football season, and will soon be announcing “Pint Night,” featuring complimentary glasses.

Can you believe it is summer time? It seems that only a short time ago I was writing about ice and snow, and now school is out.

A special thanks to all of our educators and all that they do for our kids. I wish each of you an enjoyable summer. This month we have Rivals on Five as our front cover story. Enjoy their story as it shows the strength of our community. Rivals came on board as a full page advertiser before the first customer ever entered their doors. I call this having great vision, confidence, and passion. If you have not been there, you need to go. It is a must visit destination in Lilburn.

We talk about grace in the church, but do we really understand it? Is grace just a theological buzz word that we throw around to show that we “understand” Christianity? If we really don’t get grace, then how can we live it? For the next few Chaplain’s Corners, I want to discuss this massive gospel concept of grace.

Eat your broccoli, and you can have some dessert. Keep your room clean, and you get a gold star. If you get enough gold stars, you can go to the toy store and get a toy. If you make all A’s and B’s, we will buy you a car when you turn sixteen. If your GPA is high enough, you can go to the college of your choice. If you do well in school, you can get a nice job. If you do well in your job, you can get a promotion... I’m sure you get the picture by now.

Life is heavy on law, and short on grace. We live in a conditional world.

Enter the Bible. I like what Tullian Tchividjian says, “The Bible is not a witness to the best people making it up to God; it’s a witness to God making it down to the worst people. Far from being a book full of moral heroes to emulate, what we discover is that the so-called heroes in the Bible are not really heroes at all. They fall and fail, they make huge mistakes, they get afraid, they’re selfish, deceptive, egotistical, and unreliable. The Bible is one long story of God meeting our rebellion with his rescue; our sin with his salvation; our failure with his favor; our guilt with his grace; our badness with his goodness... the overwhelming focus of the Bible is not the work of the redeemed but the work of the Redeemer.”

The Bible, then, is not a recipe book for Christian living, but a revelation book of Jesus who is the answer to our unchristian living.

The Bible is the story of Grace.

Father’s Day is one of my favorite holidays because my dad is one of my very favorite people! He has always been there for me from the time I was little, and I am so fortunate that he is still here with me today. With that said, this month’s article is in honor of our dads!

Our fathers seem to have the ability to make the hard decisions that keep the family on the straight and narrow. Don’t get me wrong moms, you are the ones who make the family a fine-oiled machine. With four kids of my own I would know. But dads are just different—in a good way.

There have been studies that show children who have involved fathers are more confident, better able to deal with frustration, better able to gain independence along with their own identity, more likely to have a high self-esteem, more sociable, less likely to show signs of depression, less likely to commit suicide, and more empathetic.

It is very important, then, that we keep you dads around for a long time, which can be a chore when dad is seriously stubborn about his health. Because men are very good with solving problems, they tend to rely on their reasoning ability and not on their listening ability. Our bodies have the amazing capability to give us signs when things are not functioning properly. Most men seem to think they will just “sweat it out,” or that it will “go away in a minute.” The next thing you know, something major in the body has broken down and serious damage has been done….or worse! Dads, we need you to understand that on a cellular level, your body might be telling you to make some lifestyle changes. By Elizabeth Kobe, D.O. It’s very easy to hear only part of the whole story when listening to television talk shows or reading short health articles these days.

Elizabeth Kobe, D.O., a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology with DeKalb Medical Physicians Group Montreal OB/GYN in Tucker, answers a few of the most frequently asked questions that are not always fully answered in popular media outlets.

Q. I’ve been on birth control pills for a number of years. How long should I wait after stopping birth control to try to get pregnant?

A. I usually recommend that people wait until they have had two menses (periods) after stopping birth control pills before trying to conceive. Oral contraceptives and other forms of birth control thin the uterine lining. This two menses waiting time allows the uterine lining to become a healthy (thicker) environment for the developing embryo to implant. During the two months coming off oral contraceptives, it is advised to use a calendar to keep track of periods, eat healthy, exercise, avoid alcohol, and begin taking prenatal vitamins.

Q. What foods or drinks should I avoid during pregnancy?

Some seafood needs to be avoided due to a high mercury content that can cause birth defects. This can be confusing because patients should get DHA/omega 3 fatty acids, which are found in fish. The best fish to eat is shrimp, salmon, catfish, and pollock. White tuna (albacore) should be limited to six ounces a week. It is best to avoid shark, swordfish, and other larger fish. Due to the risk of food borne bacteria, it is recommended not to eat raw or undercooked seafood, eggs, or meat. This means no sushi! It is recommended that unpasteurized milk, hot dogs, and cold cuts (lunch meat) be avoided unless these items are heated thoroughly before serving in order to prevent listeriosis, a food borne illness caused by bacteria. Pregnant women should not drink alcohol and should limit caffeine to one serving a day. Alcohol is associated with a syndrome of birth defects called fetal alcohol syndrome, and caffeine in large amounts may lead to a miscarriage.

Luckily, we live in a time where improved treatment options often provide the chance for extended life.

While these treatments are life-saving, they exact a heavy toll on a woman’s body. If you are a woman who is currently undergoing treatment or who is in the recovery phase, you might feel as if you couldn’t possibly exercise at this time.

But exercise could actually help your energy levels.

Research finds exercise provides physical benefits to breast cancer patients and survivors.

Exercise during and after treatment reduces the risk of cancer reoccurrence, increases the chance of living a longer and healthier life, combats treatment-induced fatigue, improves range of motion and mobility after mastectomy and reconstructive surgeries, reverses muscle loss, regains/increases strength, keeps bones healthy, lessens the side effect of nausea, and improves sleep.

Psychological benefits of exercise include a regained sense of control over one’s life, less depression symptoms, and a sense of well-being. In a small group setting there are also the advantages of support and camaraderie.

A long talk with a client inspired me to create a fitness resource specific to the breast cancer survivors in our community. As you read the title, what picture entered your mind: an incomplete project, some unfinished business, a near disaster? Perhaps it evoked feelings of inadequacy, failure, or disappointment short of reaching a goal.

There are many “almost” pictures in my mental gallery! As a high school junior in Brooklyn, New York, I was on the bowling team. We participated in a major tournament at Madison Square Garden. I almost bowled a score that would have resulted in my name being engraved on a plaque in the Garden. I almost bowled a 300 game. I almost finished in the top five. Had I acquired six more pins, those goals would have been achieved.

Disappointed? Yes. Despondent? No. Instead, my teammates and I focused on the Now almost as fun! On the return home, we boarded the sixth subway car, counted six steps to a door, and sat in the sixth seat! Rather than focus on what was not achieved, I chose Enrolling to focus on what was achieved, challenging myself to improve for the next tournament.

Sam Mahdavi: Cars, Films, and Dedication to Community

By Heidi Campbell The showroom walls of Lilburn’s Mahdavi Motorsports are adorned with awards and honors, including the “Best of Gwinnett” for six years running, and the “Best of Lilburn” for the last three years. Plaques honor their dedication to not only local teams, but also to the larger community as corporate sponsors for Parkview High School and Camp Creek Elementary. Since 1999, the Mahdavi brothers have built their diagnostic, repair, and custom-build automotive business with integrity, friendly service, and a unique marketing strategy that includes movie spots, television, and radio shows.

“I got into the business because I had no choice,” recalls Sam Mahdavi, the owner of Mahdavi Motorsports. “In 1997, I was on my own and broke. I needed to get my older car fixed. I got the run-around from local garages about the car, so I began my self-education in 1998.”

Sam immersed himself in hands-on learning through his work at a local garage, became master certified, and opened his current shop with his brother Arash in 1999. Soon after opening, they began drag racing their cars. They currently hold three world records and two championship titles.

“I build and race cars,” says Sam, recalling that “in 2001, I built a ‘one of a kind’ Honda.

I took a Honda CRX and put an ACURA-NSX motor in it. I called it a ‘CRNSX.’ I raced it in 2002. Word actually got all the way to Japan about this car, and Mr. Honda met me in Vegas in 2004 when he heard about it!”

“We specialize in diagnosing and repairing cars that everyone else has given up on.

We have never failed,” reveals Sam, who has taken his prowess for trouble-shooting to the radio. For the last four years, he has co-hosted a Saturday morning radio show called “Sam’s Garage Radio,” with long-time television personality Sam Memmolo.

“Mechanics and car dealers call in,” explains Mahdavi, “and we answer questions and save people money. One guy called us in desperation. He had already spent $4,000 following the directions from the dealership about replacing starter after starter. We researched and realized that his car had a recall and simply needed a $15.00 relay part.”

Hollywood films have provided unique marketing opportunities for Mahdavi Motorsports as well. Sam’s cars have appeared in several movies filmed in Atlanta. He managed to get his Honda Civic, featured (and flipped) in the film Wanderlust with Jennifer Aniston, to go backwards at 40 mph in his parking lot. In Fast and Furious 7, Sam was in the film as a mechanic with Kurt Russell. In Need for Speed, he and his wife were in the drive-in movie scene. Sam says, however, that he has no interest in becoming famous for films; he sees them as marketing opportunities.

Let’s Be Cops, starring Damon Wayans Jr., highlights his custom-built red Supra in a drag racing scene. Mahdavi added neons and his “MM” logo to the car’s graphics.

“It’s all about marketing,” Sam says with a smile.

This week Chris Allen, a partner in the business, spoke with me about the ways in which the business has grown over the past year.

Last May, Air Conditioning Experts operated out of three offices located in metro Atlanta, Charlotte, and Orlando. Since then, expansion into Birmingham, Tampa, and south Florida necessitated the opening of three more offices, bringing the total number to six.

Expansion hasn’t been relegated to office space only. Lewis Gentry joined Air Conditioning Experts as an apprentice over eight years ago. Today he is a managing partner overseeing operations in Florida, while Gary Watson, a family friend since childhood, fills the same role in Birmingham. More offices require more employees. Overall staff has grown from fifty employees last May to seventy-five today.

When asked why he believes Air Conditioning Experts thrives in a time when many businesses are struggling, Chris credits honest business practices, integrity, fair pricing, and a strong family dynamic. He, along with his sister, Heather Preston, and her husband Bill, continue as senior partners creating a “bond of trust” and a family feeling that permeates throughout the company.

In actuality a child is always preparing for college because learning is a lifelong process! However, I usually respond, “Beginning the summer after 8th grade is ideal.”

What can high school freshmen do to make sure they have taken every opportunity to prepare to apply to colleges and to pursue scholarship money? Here are just a few important tasks: 3 The summer after 8th grade, strengthen any academic area that is below the national average for your grade level.

3 Prior to starting 9th grade, develop the most effective and efficient study strategies by enrolling into a comprehensive, complete, and proven study skills course.

3 The importance of your Grade Point Average (GPA) begins freshman year and can greatly affect your post-secondary educational options.

3 Take a career interest inventory so you can plan and establish your career interests and goals.

3 Create a portfolio in the 9th grade that can be shared with the schools you will apply to during the latter part of high school.

3 Try to master the many topics and concepts taught during high school since college admission testing will ascertain what you have learned. High scores on these standardized tests will enable you to have options for your post-secondary education.

Who wants to get up on a Saturday at the crack of dawn, scarf down a perfectly ripe banana and some freshly squeezed orange juice, pull on hot pink running shorts, and lace up Nike running shoes all just to participate in the Gwinnett Life Run? On Saturday, May 24th over 400 Gwinnett residents did just that as they ran with one thing in common: a desire to win so they could get free Chick-fil-A for a year.

The Gwinnett Life Run is part of the Chick-fil-A Connect Race Series, a national running series compiled of 10K, 5K, and 1-mile runs. The race has a two point system: SPEED (run fast) and SPIRIT (how well you can dress up like a cow). Currently ten different states participate in this race series that include over twenty-five different cities. For each race a participant receives a different colored T-shirt and a chance to earn points based on speed and spirit.

Robin Mauck, Marketing Director at Chick-fil-A on Scenic Highway, began the race in Snellville three years ago as a fundraiser for the Pregnancy Resource Center of Gwinnett.

Last year she decided to involve Chick-fil-A and now it is an annual event.

This race continues to grow, adding more cows to the herd. The BREAST FRIENDS FITNESS program will help stretch and strengthen the shoulder, chest, back, and abdominal muscles, allowing women to regain full range of motion to those areas affected by breast cancer surgery.
