On the Cover: Summit Chase Country Club Offers Something for People of All Ages and Interests

By Heidi Campbell Nearly right on the line between Loganville and Snellville rests an 18-hole golf course, twelve lighted tennis courts, two swimming pools, a clubhouse spanning almost 15,000 square feet, a lounge, a full service dining room, a pro shop, and much more. These amenities, impeccably maintained, are all part of the Summit Chase Country Club, which has been serving the community for over forty years. Don Britt, the General Manager of the club, says, “This is a true family business. My father, Van Britt, bought the club in 1980. My mom Frankie, my sister Adrienne, my brother Dusty, and I all work together. It has been a family experience of a lifetime.”

With two full time golf pros and a successful Junior Academy, golf is a year-round, family sport at Summit Chase.

The club has set up family tees at each hole to encourage younger golfers to play with their parents, and, in the next few months, they will unveil the new Summit Chase Golf Academy, featuring the David Epps Golf School. Epps, a forty year PGA professional, is transitioning into a professional teaching role, and Britt looks forward to helping him get this new program started. Summit Chase has hosted two Georgia State 4-Ball Championships, a State Mid-Amateur Championship, an Atlanta Amateur Championship, and numerous qualifiers for the Georgia State Golf Association.

“We’ve been around a long time,” says Britt. “We have a very good reputation.”

Tennis and swim are the two other popular sports that the club offers. With lessons or competitive play to fit every age and ability, the tennis program is one of the strongest around.

Tennis, swim, and golf lessons are available to members and non-members. Britt explains that summers around the pool are great at Summit Chase, where every day is a “staycation.”

In addition, the club offers a year round swim program.

The USA swim program has 75-80 participants. “We teach between 900-1000 swim lessons a year to the community,” Britt says. “Being involved in the community is one of our real points of emphasis.”

Weekly activities are planned all year long, including “Mom’s Night Out” buffets every Wednesday night, Sunday brunches, and Friday night ala carte dining and live lounge entertainment. “Even if you don’t play golf or tennis, it is just a great place to come relax,” declares Britt. “We have great food and great social activities.”

From wine tasting to dances, the club consistently offers activities. In the summer, one Friday each month for example, the club hosts a “Sundress Scramble” golf social event, where parents can leave their children with hired nannies and enjoy time on the course. This year they are planning a Cosmic Range Night, where they will use glow in the dark golf balls. “A few years ago,” recalls Britt, “we started having a DJ spin tunes at the pool on Sundays, from 2-6 p.m. It was mostly throw back music. Taking Both the SAT and the ACT

By Carol C. Wood Students frequently ask if they should take the ACT in addition to the SAT. The answer is, “Absolutely!” Both the SAT and ACT are designed to provide college admissions officers with a predictor of a student’s first year academic achievement in college and a common “yardstick” to compare students from a wide range of educational backgrounds.

• Colleges accept either test.

• Both tests are different. The SAT is a critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and problem solving assessment. The ACT is an achievement or content-based test that assesses what a student has learned through his/her coursework at school.

• Students may score better on one test than the other. Those who are conscientious and work diligently on school coursework will score higher on the ACT. Those who have a high IQ will often score higher on the SAT due to his/her innate ability to problem solve. By taking both tests, students can determine which test provides a better showcase of their abilities.

• The ACT may save a student from having to take four SAT II Subject tests. Some colleges will not require a student to take SAT-II Subject tests if he/she has taken the ACT. • There are penalties for guessing incorrectly on the current SAT; however, there are no penalties for guessing incorrectly on the ACT. I recommend that students take both college entrance exams two times each. They may want to hire a professional to properly prepare them with test taking strategies and a review and/ or re-teaching of test content. After taking the SAT and ACT twice, use a conversion table to determine which test yields the higher scores and then submit that test to the colleges that the student is applying to, unless the colleges use a “super score” system. Colleges that “super score” will use the best score from each test area from different test dates and sometimes even from different tests!

Travel Tales: A Bright New Berlin

By Pam Walker Recently much has been made of Berlin and the 25th anniversary of the end of “The Wall.”

When I thought about traveling there, my contacts begged me not to write another story about these celebrations or the Wall.

I arrived on a cold day in January, and as the driver whisked me in from the airport, I was amazed at the modern architecture popping up around every turn. I took a city tour and was constantly reminded by the guide’s commentary that Berlin was completely devastated by the allies in 1945.

Prior to 1945 Berlin was a Prussian city filled with palaces. These palaces now are few and far between. Most of the downtown area near the Brandenburg Gate is very modern.

There is, however, one small area where beautiful buildings are still standing.

Gendarmenmarkt as well as the famed Brandenburg Gate are now surrounded by modern structures that were designed

by European architects during the 1960s and 1970s. Some look like creations by spacemen; others contain straight lines and sharp edges.

Berlin is now a city of shopping, entertainment, and restaurants. If you are a lover of Wiener schnitzel, Spätzle, or any kind of sausage and lots of beer, then Berlin is your city. Since World War II, Berlin has become one of the most international cities in the world with people and restaurants of every national type.

I was expecting to see a German city like Munich or other smaller towns with picturesque architecture and traditional German buildings with flower boxes in the windows. If this is the Germany that you want to see, don‘t come to Berlin! Berlin is an architect’s dream – the New Berlin.

By Mike Harper, Realtor By this time you’ve likely selected a real estate agent. Your agent will be able to suggest steps to take to prepare your home for sale. Preparation is critical in this competitive real estate market. While some buyers may be willing to take on a “project,” most prefer to have very little to work on to make the home livable. While some redecorating is to be expected, many buyers will pass over a home that needs significant repairs. If major repairs or improvements are needed, the listing date will be later rather than sooner.

Declutter is an action you can do to prepare your home for sale. That means removing much of the extra furniture, personal items and family photos from your home. Attics, basements and garages should also be cleaned out. Rent a storage unit if you are not ready to part with some of the items right away. Many sellers find that getting input from an interior decorator or home stager can reap significant rewards in terms of the home’s sale price as well as a quicker sale.

If there are specific items that you will not be leaving behind but a buyer would reasonably expect to remain, such as a cherished chandelier, remove those items prior to listing your home to eliminate any misunderstandings or disputes down the road. Any obvious defects or nonfunctioning items should be corrected prior to putting the home on the market. Such defects may be a turn-off to potential buyers and will most certainly be identified during the post-contract home inspection. Better to have the items corrected before the sale process begins.

By Perry Rosenbaum Baseball. The national pastime – and by far this writer’s favorite athletic endeavor. This may not be readily apparent, but Gwinnett County (and, indeed, Georgia as a whole) is something of a prospect hotbed.

In fact, notable major league players such as Brandon Moss (an MLB All-Star last season with the Oakland Athletics) and Clint Frazier (drafted 5th overall by the Cleveland Indians in 2013) have come straight out of Loganville High School where head coach Jeff Segars has been the man at the helm for over fifteen years. Segars became an assistant coach in 1997, then took over as head coach two years later. An Athens native, Segars played baseball and basketball at Oconee High, sticking with baseball during his time at GCSU where he received his teaching degree. His coaching philosophy is simple: “Treat the kids fair and work them consistently on things that help you win games.”

Camaraderie is paramount for Segars’ squads. “Our guys like each other, and they put a lot of time into practicing together.” A large number of former sluggers and hurlers come back to visit the team on a regular basis, supporting the coaches who helped them achieve their dreams. Another apparent benefit from the team’s close-knit nature is their run of success over the years. The Red Devils won the state championship in 2008 and 2012, were in the Final 4 in 2002, 2008-09, and 2011-12, and they’ve made the Sweet 16 or better nearly every year since 2001, only barely missing the playoffs in 2005-06. “We’ve certainly had a good run,” Segars says, “but we never get complacent. Each season is another opportunity to add to our tradition.”

When asked what he believed to be his greatest strength as a coach, Segars credited his crew of assistant coaches – Brandon Anglin, Bran Mills, and Mike Ryan – with doing most of the work. “They’re excellent teachers of the game.

I just make the plan. They’re the ones who truly put it into action.” This contingency has been together for quite a while. Ryan played with Segars while they attended GCSU, adding Mills from the same school, and Anglin after he graduated from UGA. Segars stresses that he has no interest in micromanaging, and his support staff allows him to take a zen-like, hands-off approach towards molding young men into future major league talent. It’s hard to argue with their track record.

“A high school baseball coach has to wear many hats,” Segars explains. “You’ve got to run a booster club that you organize and fundraise, you’ve got to worry about field maintenance, off-field issues, concessions, player development…all this, and you of course have to mix in a few wins on the diamond.” It’s clear that Segars and his staff do not take their roles lightly, however. “I am blessed in that we have a great support system, along with a knowledgeable coaching staff that really cares about the kids. We could not have achieved the success we have without both.”

The Red Devils will be christening their new field at the end of this season, and Segars would like to encourage the entire community to come to Alumni Day on April 25th against Marist, as it will be their final game in their current ballpark. There will also be alumni batting practice before the game. “We’re looking forward to opening the new field,” Segars says, “but at the same time, there have been so many great memories at the old one. April 25th should be a special day!”

Five Years Strong: The Amanda Riley Foundation Continues to Bring Smiles to Kids with Cancer

By Heidi Campbell “If you are blessed to have healthy children, don’t take it for granted,” says Barbara Riley, the founder of the Amanda Riley Foundation.

It has been five years since her daughter, Amanda Riley, a 17-year-old Brookwood High School student, lost her battle with Rhabdomyosarcoma: a rare solid tumor cancer. Since Amanda’s passing, Barbara and Steve Riley have worked tirelessly to create, run, and promote the Amanda Riley Foundation that is dedicated to putting smiles on the faces of kids battling cancer. “Initially, I thought about raising funds for research,” recalls Barbara Riley, “but decided instead to directly support the children by giving them toys, gift cards, and electronics.”

Working with the AFLAC Cancer Center at Scottish Rite hospital, the Foundation provides direct support for families of children who have been diagnosed with solid tumor cancer, the same type of cancer that Amanda had. “We hope, one day, to directly support all 370 plus children diagnosed with cancer each year in the Atlanta area, but we don’t yet have the means to do so,” says Riley. “We give 100% of donations received to the kids. We pay no salaries and have no overhead. Every person who works for our Foundation, including Steve and myself, is a volunteer.”

The Foundation provides assistance at the hospital and beyond. Every Monday, they provide lunch for approximately eighty people: kids, parents, and nurses. They provide snack, toiletry, and gift baskets for the inpatient families. Most recently, they purchased $2,500 worth of games for the new Xbox One game systems that are going into almost forty rooms at two hospitals. “We support kids and families from diagnosis until the treatment is finished,” shares Riley. “We provided presents for 73 kids this Christmas, and we often help families pay car payments, rent, and utilities.”

The volunteers are excited about two upcoming fundraising events. On June 6th, from 7 a.m. to11 a.m., they will host the 5th annual “Miles 4 Smiles” walk and run festival at Tribble Mill Park. There will be a 10K, a 5K, and a mile fun-run, along with vendors, booths, and kid activities. On July 25th they are planning their first “Gala 4 GOLD” event at 550 Trackside in Lawrenceville. This event will include silent and live auctions, dinner, and guest speakers.

Registration is currently open for both events at the Foundation’s website.

This year, in addition to directly supporting the families, the Foundation hopes to fund their first fellowship for Rhabdomyosarcoma research. “We need to find a cure. Just before the holidays, I lost six kids in four weeks. It is overwhelming. I have never been so passionate about anything in my life. I do this so I can help other kids battling as Amanda did,” says Riley. “This is what I do.”

Community Member Spotlight: Kim Kiser of Classical Conversations

By Ashanti Jabri Often times we as a society stumble upon jewels whose values are made manifest only after they’ve been discovered. Rubies among people, sapphires among organizations, emeralds within classrooms. However, peculiarly and even more frequently, we discover that underground and out of sight, pressurized into white orbs of light, there are also diamonds among people and organizations – diamonds that never receive praise for their resplendent shine, recognition for their natural, pure beauty, nor acknowledgment of their innate and timeless value. These people remain unknown, without the desire to be known, continually becoming beautiful, giving themselves freely to the world despite their own trials and tribulations. And what’s even more strikingly odd is that these wonderful examples are literally everywhere, with stories that will bring tears to the driest of eyes and soften the hardest of hearts.

Kim Kiser, who currently resides in Loganville Georgia, is not only the regional director and support manager for the worldwide, Christian-based homeschool organization Classical Conversations, but is also one of Gwinnett’s many unearthed diamonds. Classical Conversations, founded in 1996, blends together the rich and classic values of learning, teaching, and faith. With an immensely wide network of parents as the teachers and their children as the students, Classical Conversations provides modern parents with the necessary tools to not only educate their child, but also to teach that child how to learn for him or herself.

Kim began her journey with Classical Conversations in 2007, long after she had come to the conclusion that the public school system wasn’t the best option for her first born son. “Just put him in the back yard,” Kim’s late husband Rob said after Kim told him her decision to homeschool their child. “He’ll learn more there than he ever would in that school.” It wasn’t a full blown negation of the school system that veered Kim away from the traditional mode of American education, even though she holds a BA in early childhood education. Instead, it was the very principle that initially attracted her to Classical Conversations and the entire idea of homeschooling in the first place – when it comes to one’s children, there are no experts except the parents.

“Education is a lot simpler than what ‘experts’ want us to believe,” Kim says, explaining the comprehensiveness Classical Conversations offers families. “If a person can read and write, they can teach.” And that is exactly what the now nineteen year old organization has successfully done for families around the world – giving parents the power to define education for their children

in an engaging, liberating way. “And yes, it’s true, sometimes you do get lonely and feel a little isolated,” Kim said, reminiscing about when she first began homeschooling her child. “But, with the support of my husband, and then shortly after the support of Classical Conversations, you’ll soon begin to realize that the community binds you together, and you begin to see the benefits both spiritually and academically.”

For many, including Kim Kiser, Classical Conversations represent freedom, liberation, and a light that reveals that not only are they able to learn, but are also able to teach. It gives people hope, in an age where education, for some, seems hopeless. It is a brilliant diamond, shining brightly in the rough. And like diamonds, the influence of Kim and her contemporaries upon families in the Loganville area and abroad will last forever. The need is there. The time is now.

It’s Really about Functional Fitness

By Kelly Farris, ACSM CPT The various media in our lives shout about fitness trends that promise major results for minimal effort. Or, you get the opposite end of the spectrum, where you walk into a facility but crawl out. As a fitness professional with twenty-five years in the industry, I have heard it all. And while I don’t find these extremes surprising, they REALLY bother me.

The claim that any singular workout will fundamentally alter your body is bogus. You are born with a certain body type: mesomorph, endomorph, ectomorph, or combination. If you have curvaceous hips at your ideal body weight, then you will always have them. Take note of IDEAL body weight. We need to be the best and healthiest versions of ourselves.

Any activity is preferable to zero activity, provided you are not causing yourself injury. Doing more is not always better. A good rule of thumb regardless of age is to aim for a FUNCTIONAL workout. God designed our bodies for four primal movement patterns: pushing, pulling, lunging, squatting. Exercises should be based on these four movements, helping you to be stronger in your day to day activities.

In truth, there is no best way to get in shape. All efforts will work to some degree for a limited amount of time. Changing up your exercise and cross training is the best advice I can give you.

That and DO NOT STOP. Fitness has to become a lifestyle. You don’t work to reach a goal and then quit. The fitness realm can be overwhelming. Get some help. Hire a professional fitness trainer (with an accredited certification) who will tailor-make a program for you.

FUNCTIONAL. BALANCED. VARIED. SUSTAINABLE. Notice I didn’t say easy.

There is no easy short cut to getting in shape. That’s why it’s called WORKING out.

By Julie Mills-Watson, CMT, LLCC The use of cell phones is a common, every day activity. In fact, if someone does not have one, we almost get annoyed. It is important to realize the possible hazards of cell phone use. Last month I wrote about possible health risks of cell phones, especially with the risk being much higher for children. Children absorb more EMF (electromagnetic fields) than adults because their brain tissues are more absorbent, their skulls are thinner, and their relative size is smaller.

Here are some safety tips for cell phone usage.

1.) USE A HEADSET OR SPEAKER: Choose either wired or wireless. If you go wireless, make sure to take your headset out of your ear when you’re not on a call. Use your phone in speaker mode.

2.) TEXT MORE, TALK LESS: Phones emit less radiation when sending text rather than voice communications. No texting while driving, please!

3.) CALL WHEN THE SIGNAL IS STRONG: Fewer bars mean the phone must try harder to broadcast its signal. Research shows that radiation exposure increases dramatically when cell phone signals are weak.

4.) WHEN IN USE, HOLD PHONE AWAY FROM YOUR BODY: The amount of radiation absorbed by your head and body decreases dramatically with even a small distance. Don’t put the phone in your pocket or clip it to your belt, even when using your headset.

5.) DON’T STORE CELL PHONES IN YOUR POCKET OR UNDER YOUR PILLOW: When a phone is on and not in use, it still sends out an intermittent signal, which means radiation exposure is still happening. Look up “cell phone radiation protector” to find great protection devices.

Cell phones are getting more powerful, are used more frequently, and are used for more functions like watching movies and paying our bills. Common sense tells us that this can’t be good, especially when it has been determined that continuous radiation exposure is carcinogenic to the extent that its danger is considered “undetermined.” Take steps now to protect yourself and your family from the unseen hazards of modern technology.

Britt explains, “This is not like your traditional country club. We are a different breed. Our motto is ‘You belong here.’ The staff and the membership make it comfortable, and not stuffy.

Dr. Bishop, principal since 2008, says one of the changes in the school over the last seven years is the adoption of the collaboration model of teaching, which allows students to achieve more at a higher rate. Students learn to work in groups, and get a head start on college and career readiness through collaboration and the STEM approach to learning.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and refers to a teaching approach that uses project-based activities to teach what Dr. Bishop calls “quality plus problem solving.” Classroom teachers use this approach from kindergarten through 5th grade. Students might be asked to create art with a math theme, to journal about laboratory experiments, or to write about and illustrate their thought processes. This approach sparks learning while encouraging critical thinking.

Working closely with the school, local Boy Scouts have plans to pilot a BSA STEM lab soon.

They, along with local Girl Scouts, will work together to maintain an outdoor learning classroom where students are taught about parts of plants and the plant life cycle. The Girl Scouts also plan to refurbish bird houses hung amid thirty-four shade trees recently planted on the playground through a Georgia Forestry Commission program called, “Making the Shade.”

Like most Gwinnett County schools, W.J. Cooper Elementary participates in the Bring Your Own Device Program. After signing an internet usage agreement, students can bring a device such as a cell phone or tablet on a designated day. Students are then taught to use their device as a learning tool through recording events, responding to blogs, and posting on social sites such as Twitter.

As they have for several years, the school will host Camp Invention, set for June 8th through June 11th. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., students will participate in project-based activities on a specific theme. Information and registration are available on the school’s website.

Iron Accents – Practically Elegant

By Stacye Carroll When Larissa Benson bought the property at 135 E. Pike Street in Lawrenceville, she did so with an eye toward investing in a part of Gwinnett County she had grown to love.

As the owner of two Re/Max franchises, Larissa wasn’t looking to change careers. Instead, she considered her investment a “side project.” The decision to use the property to open a second Iron Accents location – where you can find quality wrought iron furniture and accessories – came when Larissa realized she couldn’t bear the thought of renting the house after it had been renovated.

Iron Accents originally began online in 1999 by Larissa’s mother, Valerie Kirves, who later opened a retail store in Clermont, Georgia. While the focus of the business hasn’t changed, antiques, wood furniture, and many other items have been added to a product line that might be best described as “practically elegant.”

“We only carry quality products,” says Larissa, with most items being produced locally. “We don’t carry anything we wouldn’t put in our own homes, and we keep it changing.”

Each room of the house is themed. In the Garden Room you’ll find candles, lotions, and floral items amongst the wood and iron. There’s a room filled with box signs of every size and sensibility, a men’s room, and a dining room where items from the Gracious Goods collection are displayed. The Peek-a-Boutique is filled with items for babies and small children from manufacturers such as Noodle & Boo and Mud Pie. A large room in the back of the house is available for meetings or parties of 35 to 50 people. Iron Accents takes care of the decorations and local restaurants offer food and drink at a 10% discount.

Activities are held at Iron Accents every month. For instance, at Girls’ Night, food and drink are served, and participants get a 10% discount on anything purchased that night. Last month Iron Accents celebrated their one year anniversary with raffles and drawings each week. By Perry Rosenbaum Some claim that radio is a dying medium, that the prevalence of podcasts and user-created content is putting the antiquated system of broadcasting to rest. A closer look reveals, however, that radio is thriving like never before, both in its original form and on the Internet. That’s likely due to shrewd people throughout the industry knowing how to adapt to a changing market.

Jeff Davis, the vice president/general manager of JW Broadcasting in Atlanta, is clearly one of these disc-jockeying mavens with the prowess to keep his trade fresh. JW Broadcasting, which has provided metro Atlanta with both Newstalk 1160 and The Voice of the Arts 1690 since 2002, may not be the largest broadcaster in Georgia, but they’re determined to be one of the most reliable and socially-conscious. “It’s a great joy to be in a position to help people,” Davis says with a resonant hint of pride in his voice. “We’re involved in food banks, summer camps for children with disabilities…we try to stay as engaged with the community as we can.” Davis has been in radio for several decades, so he’s no stranger to the intricacies of running two successful stations.

“I was practicing law and I didn’t enjoy it,” Davis recalls, “but I did enjoy DJ’ing in high school and college, so it just made sense to throw myself into this business.”

Davis admits that the challenges of keeping “terrestrial radio” relevant are significant, but they aren’t insurmountable. “All these digital platforms have cut into our business…but we’ve managed to keep up pretty well. We have a website, we stream everything 24/7, we’ve got an app for iPhones and Androids, so we’re staying abreast of these rapid changes.” In addition, technical difficulties can influence a station’s perception in the public eye, but Davis states that “the glitches, while plentiful, are normally taken care of so quickly you don’t even notice that something went wrong.”

The various on-air personalities at JW Broadcasting continue to provide their listeners with fresh, meaningful content. More important than what’s being played or discussed, at least to Davis, is the talented stable of hosts in charge of those airwaves. “Being able to gainfully employ people, which in turn gives them the ability to support their families…it’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. That’s a huge part of why I do what I do.” Those hosts, including John Lemley (City Café), Jennifer Green (Women on the Move), and Scott Morris (Dollar Bin Deluxe), are all committed to upholding the company’s high standards.

Advertising is a powerful force in helping radio stations stay solvent. This, Davis says, is even more paramount for a smaller company such as JW. “People really love our stations and program-

ming,” Davis explains, “but some of them may not realize that their patronage of our advertisers is what really drives business here.” He equates this to the noticeable difference between auditory and visual/tactile publicity: in a magazine (such as the one you’re reading now), you can easily see the ads on the page at any time. But with radio, the ad plays only for a brief moment. If you don’t retain it in either scenario, the ad has essentially failed. With a wide variety of programs appealing to all ages and sensibilities, not to mention the excellent on- and off-air staff, you’ll want to make sure to set your dial to either 1160 AM (Newstalk) or 1690 AM (The Voice of the Arts) for sharp, quality radio.

Getting to Know: Jane Bishop, CEO of “Take the Next Step”

By Stacye Carroll Jane Bishop didn’t so much decide to become a life coach as feel compelled to through her “God-given gifts.” While coaching men’s and women’s basketball teams in a time when few women filled those roles, Jane realized her passion for helping others. Today, as founder and CEO of “Take the Next Step,” Jane puts her twenty-five years of experience to use by offering coaching, consulting, and training to individuals and groups who are eager to make a change.

Jane says many clients come to her feeling “stuck.” One woman no longer felt satisfied working for a company she’d been with for over twenty-four years. As a skilled professional life coach, Jane assisted the woman in finding a solution and executing a plan for positive change.

Though coaching currently does not require licensing, Jane – already a holder of two master’s degrees – sought training through the International Federation of Coaching. She holds credentials that reflect education, a specific number of coaching hours, and screening for specialized skills. Credentialed coaches are held accountable through a code of ethics that stresses confidentiality, and through continuing education. That’s alright with Jane, who believes, “When a person stops learning, they stop living.”

According to Jane, coaching differs from therapy and consulting in that coaches listen to clients while allowing them to come to their own conclusions. During a thirty minute complimentary session, Jane might ask such questions as, “Where are you currently?” and “Where do you want to go?”

She only makes suggestions with the client’s permission.

Clients appreciate the types of questions she asks, her listening skills, and the fact that Jane is authentically client-focused.

“Take the Next Step” also offers coaching, consulting, and training for groups and businesses. Services include use of the DISC personality profile and its 5 Behaviors of a Cohesive Team.

Jane has lived in Gwinnett County for thirty years and refers to it as her “second home.” That title takes on an entirely different meaning upon learning that as a “military kid,” Jane lived in eleven cities in four states, and in one foreign country. Jane says her parents provided stability to her and her 2 brothers by always reminding them of their roots and by taking family vacations back home.

Sports were a big part of their lives as was fitness which, according to Jane, “undergirds every part of life.” Upon retirement from the military, Jane’s father became pastor of a local church where her mother served as music minister. Her parents’ frequent reminder that she could “do anything you set your mind to” provided lifelong inspiration. Out of all her qualifications and life experience, though, faith is the one thing Jane turns to most often. “Everything centers around that,” she says. “Our gifts come from there.”

Community Business Spotlight: Necessities by Sherrie

By Heidi Campbell Necessities by Sherrie, located in the New London Plaza in Snellville, opened its doors in October 2004, and quickly became the largest intimate apparel shop in the area. Built on a foundation of quality, service, and experience, Necessities by Sherrie and its knowledgeable staff focus on each individual, perfectly fitting the customer with high quality products. “We work to create a wardrobe under your outside wardrobe,” owner Sherrie Strong explains. “It’s like a house. If you have a weak foundation, your house doesn’t hold up. We are selling that foundation.”

The store is stocked with all shapes and styles of bras – sizes 28A to 50N – including apparel for athletes, nursing mothers, and women seeking special sizes.

According to Strong, their quick-drying sports bras can minimize up to 88% of an athlete’s motion. Their nursing bras, sized up to a JJ cup, can also be specially converted from a regular bra. “We are bra fitters,” Strong explains. “We have 97 different sizes of bras in the store.

If we don’t have it, it is not made anywhere in the world.”

Shapewear is also available in the store, in every size and style. Shapewear is both breathable and functional.

According to Strong, who wears it daily, Shapewear can instantly take five pounds off a person because it controls the extra thickness in the thighs and the “muffin top” sometimes seen over the tops of pants. “I love Shapewear,” says Strong. “I couldn’t live without it!

It takes your squishy sausage and puts it into a really smooth hot dog!”

The service, quality, and selection of the store hit the TLC network two years ago when Miss Mama June from “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” came in for a bra fitting and filmed the episode “Lift and Scoop.” Sugar Bear returned to buy Mama June some intimate apparel, and they filmed last season’s episode “Vowel of Silence.”

Necessities also carries a line of underwear for men called Saxx underwear. Strong says, “Saxx is a great product! It is 100% breathable, fast-drying men’s underwear, with an ergonomic pouch that keeps everything in place. The women who bought this underwear for their husbands for Christmas all came back in for more!”

Strong says she is eager to welcome the Empreinte Lingerie of France to her store in April. The shop will also roll out bra-sized swimwear for 2015 by popular designers including Prima Donna, Janine Robin of France, and Elomi.

The focus on the individual customer is the key to this business. Strong explains that their bra-fitting service really has an impact on a lot of women. She says, “A lot of women are not as large as they think they are; they just have never had a good bra. We all have fluff under the arms, and a little extra junk on our thighs. We work to minimize that. We want women to walk out of the store feeling good about themselves.”
