A message from President John L. Crain I am very honored to have been named Southeastern’s fourteenth president by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. The Presidential Search was an enlightening experience, which began with an institutional review by the national consulting firm Keeling and Associates, progressed through a thorough interview process, and concluded with the final selection meeting with the board.

The involvement of faculty, staff, students, alumni and community partners during the entire process was remarkable. I want to express my appreciation to all who participated.

Throughout the interview process I had the opportunity to reflect upon the more than 20 years I have had the pleasure of spending at Southeastern. This institution has been a significant part of my personal and professional life, and I am very fortunate to have been part of the Southeastern family for all of these years. I feel a strong sense of proprietorship and passion for this great institution, and I can think of no greater opportunity than to serve as Southeastern’s president.

Looking ahead, despite looming budget concerns, I believe Southeastern’s future continues to be very bright. There will be both challenges and opportunities as we strive to maintain our established path of improvement, to sustain a culture of innovation and creativity, and to carefully evaluate and fine tune our initiatives to ensure their continued success. I look forward to working with all who have a continuing interest in the advancement of our great University and improvement in the quality of life in our region.

What a busy time it has been at Southeastern this spring, especially for the past month with the selection of the University’s fourteenth president. The process involved many highly qualified applicants with each holding the credentials to continue Southeastern’s excellence as an institution of higher learning.

The process included the services of a national search firm, the selection of the four final candidates, interviews by the Search Committee and numerous interactions with the faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members. It was promising to observe the many qualities each candidate would bring to the campus.

Throughout the process, Interim President Dr. John Crain showed exemplary skills of leadership, in-depth knowledge of the university, professionalism, business expertise and an ongoing relationship with school systems in the region, legislators, businesses and communities surrounding the university.

We are proud to have been an integral part of the process and eagerly look forward to continuing our work with Dr. Crain to make Southeastern an even greater institution!

Crain appointed Southeastern's 14th president

- President John L. Crain John L. Crain, who has served as interim president of Southeastern since July, was unanimously approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors as the university’s 14th president at a special board meeting Feb. 17.

Following an extensive, nationwide search that attracted nearly 20 professionals, the board had to look no further than its own backyard in selecting Crain, a native of Franklinton and a member of the Southeastern faculty and administration for 22 years.

“I am both humbled and honored that you have allowed me to continue working with the faculty, staff, students, alumni and community of Southeastern,” Crain told the board. “I assure you I will do my very best to be an effective and successful president.”

He told the board he has a strong sense of proprietorship and passion about Southeastern, a place where he received both his undergraduate degree in accounting and his MBA before completing doctoral studies in accountancy at the University of Mississippi.

“I have derived considerable pleasure in seeing students succeed, and that has driven me throughout my career at Southeastern,” he said. “This is much more than a job for me. I have observed Southeastern as it has grown and matured over the years, and I want to see the continued success of the university.”

In the interview process, Crain received considerable public support from the faculty and members of the community, several of whom spoke before the board’s search committee that interviewed four semi-finalists.

“I am confident that Southeastern will continue to flourish under his leadership,” said UL System President Randy Moffett, the previous president at Southeastern. “His innovative ideas, tenacious work ethic and dedication to the university community are just some of the reasons why he will be successful.”

As Southeastern’s president, Crain oversees Louisiana’s third largest public university with over 15,000 students and an operating budget of $124 million.

Acknowledging that the state is looking at difficult financial restraints in the coming years, he told the board that his background in finance and accounting and his experience in helping to build Southeastern’s budget over recent years will be helpful.

“We may be looking at short-term or long-term issues, and we have to be prepared to address the situation,” he said. “In any situation, however, it’s important that Southeastern protect the academic core of our mission.”

UL System board member and Hammond resident Andre Coudrain made the motion for the board to appoint Crain president.

“My observation is if it’s bad times or good times, if it’s at Southeastern Louisiana University or any institution in America, John Crain is ready to be president. Fortunately for us, it just happens to be now and at Southeastern,” he said.

Crain served seven years as provost and vice president for academic affairs under Moffett. He played a key role in helping direct the recruitment of increasing numbers of first-time freshmen to the institution, placing emphasis on attracting students who are highly prepared for the college experience. He also was heavily involved in the creation of the Southeast Louisiana Business Center, a one-stop shop for economic development in the region, and the Southeastern Channel, the university’s cooperative television venture with Charter Communications. A former professor and head of the Department of Accounting in the College of Business, he served as president of the Faculty Senate for two years.

Crain’s community service includes board memberships for the regional economic development organization GNO, Inc., the Northshore Business Council, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum and the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Museum. He is a former member of the Louisiana Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Excellence and the Louisiana Board of Regents Master Plan Advisory Panel Workgroup on Retention and Completion. He is a member of the Hammond Rotary Club.

“Southeastern has a tradition of excellence,” said UL System Board Chair Elsie Burkhalter. “We all look forward to working with President Crain as he continues to grow this university to greatness.”

Communication lab aimed at easing public speaking fears Southeastern students who fear public speaking are learning to overcome anxiety by participating in the university’s newly developed Communication Apprehension Lab. Under the direction of Graduate Coordinator Suzette Bryan, graduate students in the Department of Communication teach students valuable cognitive and visualization tactics they can use to ease public speaking anxiety, considered the most common fear of adults.

The lab also provides communication graduate students with important research experience in an area that Bryan said is “groundbreaking” and, to her knowledge, unique to Southeastern.

Located on the third floor of D Vickers Hall, the lab is open to any student who would like to overcome the fear of public speaking.

“I have taught a lot of students with extreme communication apprehension, especially associated with public speaking,” said Bryan. “Although some research has said the fear of public speaking is too embedded within human personality to be changed, recent research has shown that cognitive approaches can help change the brain patterns associated with fear.”

Bryan, who has an educational background in speech pathology and organizational communication, said people have the ability to overcome public speaking fears if they are highly motivated and willing to put forth the effort.

Lab participants initially complete a series of apprehension surveys and present a prepared speech in front of a volunteer audience. Using a “mini logger,” a non-invasive apparatus similar to a heart rate monitor, research assistants measure communication apprehension by recording heart rates and patterns.

After the assessment, participants are assigned one of three anxiety- relief techniques – visualization, cognitive restructuring and skills practice – which have been shown to strengthen

public speaking skills and increase confidence.

Following three weeks of individual, daily training and journaling, participants return to the lab for a follow-up session and their assessment is repeated.

“We want to see if the anxiety-relief tactics help ease communication apprehension and if three weeks is enough time to make a difference,” Bryan said.

Bryan said the experimental research and collection of data will give communication graduate assistants the opportunity to present their findings at various conferences and submit their work to scholarly journals.

“One of the things that is sometimes a roadblock for graduate students who want to go into a doctoral program is not having enough background in research,” she said. “With the Communication Apprehension Lab, they are able to really jump into research and become a part of it. All we need now are customers.”

Graduate research assistant Brittney Baptiste, who was responsible for creating the experimental protocol, said the lab is an effective device for linking Southeastern students and faculty.

“Working with Dr. Bryan in the development of the lab has shown me that instructors do create opportunities to further their students’ academic careers,” Baptiste said. “Our lab can give students the tools they need to build on their communication skills, and I’m looking forward to the results.”

Southeastern adds Engineering Tech program

Southeastern is now offering a new degree program in engineering technology designed to prepare graduates for a variety of industrial workforce needs.

The new program, which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree, builds on Southeastern’s industrial technology and computer science programs offered through the College of Science and Technology.

Four concentrations are planned, with industrial, computer and mechanical technology being offered initially with construction engineering technology to follow. The programs in mechanical engineering technology and computer engineering technology are the only programs of their kind offered in the state.

“We are excited about the anticipated impact this program will have on the workforce,” said President John L. Crain. “The Louisiana Department of Labor and other sources indicate that in the next several years we can expect a 17 percent growth in the construction industry and a 44 percent growth in the professional, scientific and technical services industries. This will lead to greater demand for specialized technical positions such as engineering technologists.”

Crain said the new programs will use Southeastern’s current computer and technology labs for the next several years while waiting for construction to begin on a recently-approved $21.4 million engineering technology building.

The engineering technology program is different from traditional engineering in that it is more focused on applications of technology, explained Cris Koutsougeras, professor of computer science and head of the Department of Computer Science and Industrial Technology. A classic engineering program centers more on theoretical fundamentals that can lead to the development of new technology, he said.

“The approach is different from classical engineering in that it is devoted primarily to the utilization of available engineering techniques and methods to solve practical technological problems,” said Junkun Ma, assistant professor of industrial technology.

Koutsougeras said the intent is to develop a nationally recognized and accredited program by offering a strong curriculum, hands-on education, applied research and service, and content that is highly relevant to employers’ needs.

Planning for the new degree program involved considerable consultation with the department’s advisory board, a committee of 50 industry members who provide advice on curricula, degree programs and work opportunities.

“They give us feedback on the skills, qualifications and knowledge they expect from a graduate of our program,” Ma said. “We’ll maintain a tight relationship with these professionals and anticipate that our students will get some industrial experience before they graduate through joint efforts with industry on research and other activities such as internships.”

“A number of the advisory board members indicated this program is just what industry needs at this time,” added Koutsougeras.

The program is expected to draw heavily from currently enrolled students, especially those who have selected preengineering as an area of interest with the intent of transferring to another university for a four-year degree in engineering.

“I’m very excited to be one of the first students in this new program,” said sophomore Beth King of Franklinton, who is entering the mechanical engineering technology concentration. “I was majoring in pre-engineering and physics and had planned to transfer to another university. What caught my attention about this program is that it is an applied science, whereas pure engineering is a theoretical science. For me, this is really a great opportunity.”

selected for Alumni Feature Abreu executive leadership program

A part-time job as a student worker in Southeastern’s International Initiatives program planted in Cristina Abreu the desire to work with the international community.

Now a manager of external business quality and compliance with the Nielsen media research company in Tampa, the Southeastern graduate was recently selected to participate in the National Hispana Leadership Institute’s 2009 Executive Leadership Program. The institute’s vision is to “create positive global change through personal integrity and ethical leadership.”

The program prepares selected Hispanic women who have demonstrated leadership at the local level for positions of national influence and public policy impact. Only 22 applicants are selected nationally each year from among the best and the brightest Hispanic women in the United States.

“I am proud to be a Latina chosen to participate in such a prestigious program,” said Abreu, a 2001 Magna Cum Laude graduate in organizational communication. “I look forward to learning about myself as a leader and working with other talented and passionate Latinas across the Nation.”

Born in New Orleans to Cuban immigrants and raised in Amite, Abreu was first attracted to Southeastern because she “liked the idea of the smaller class sizes and interaction with professors who took the time to work one-on-one

with students,” she said. “Southeastern offered a great opportunity to obtain a solid education and stay close to home.”

After graduation, Abreu pursued a master’s degree at Southeastern in organizational communication with a concentration in marketing. She graduated with a 4.0 in 2003.

She credits Southeastern with preparing her for a career with Nielsen.

“Southeastern provided me with exposure to Nielsen and marketing research through various projects in marketing courses and through my graduate assistantship in the College of Business dean’s office,” she said.

Abreu, who just celebrated her fifth anniversary with Nielsen, started as part of the Management Development Rotation Program (MDRP), an 18-month development program that took her through various business fields in company offices in New York, Tampa, Chicago and Los Angeles.

After completing the MDRP, she moved to Tampa to work in the Quality Assurance Department as the QA audit coordinator. Abreu now manages a team of seven auditors who facilitate and support the Media Rating Council (MRC) audit process. The group serves as the Nielsen Company’s primary liaison in working with Ernst & Young’s MRC audit team.

In addition to academic preparation, Southeastern instilled in Abreu a love of working with the international community.

“The work I did as part of International Initiatives is one of my fondest memories at Southeastern,” she said. “I worked closely with Dr. Aristides Baraya on programs for various groups from Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. It was gratifying to see how training and development efforts can open doors for others.”

In fact, Abreu was selected for the NHLI Executive Leadership Program because of her extensive community service record in Tampa, which includes serving as co-chair of Nielsen’s HOLA (Hispanic Organization of Leaders in Action) Employee Resource Group.

She also serves as secretary and board of directors member of the Hispanic Professional Women’s Association, Inc. and is actively involved in Tampa’s Hispanic community by promoting educational activities for Hispanic women to foster professional growth and promote the value of higher education.

Although she now resides in Tampa, Abreu enjoys coming home to her roots.

“I enjoy returning to Southeastern and seeing the positive change in Hammond,” she said. “I’m very proud to call Louisiana home and to be part of the Southeastern family.”

Teacher prep program receives national accreditation Southeastern’s teacher preparation program has received a seven-year national re-accreditation.

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the primary accrediting body for teacher preparation programs, approved the university’s undergraduate and graduate programs after a site visit and comprehensive review conducted earlier this year.

NCATE is an alliance of 33 professional organizations of the teaching profession and education policy community. The organization accredits more than 630 institutions which produce approximately two-thirds of the nation’s teachers each year.

“Today’s teachers must be effective educators, with a depth of content knowledge in the areas they teach and knowledge of the general principles of effective teaching and learning,” said President John L. Crain.

“Achieving this re-accreditation ensures Southeastern teacher candidates are engaged in a rigorous process to prepare them for a teaching career.”

“Re-accreditation means our pro-

gram meets or exceeds the national standards of academic quality needed to produce the teachers of today,” said Diane Allen, dean of the College of Education and Human Development.

Southeastern is one of the largest producers of teachers in the state, graduating about 300 each year. The program has approximately 1,450 undergraduate students and another 400 studying at the graduate level.

Southeastern’s doctoral program in educational leadership, the first at the institution, has more than 60 students enrolled with its first graduates anticipated in spring 2009. The program has been nationally accredited since 1976.

One of the strongest elements of the program is the emphasis on student field experiences and clinical practice, Allen said. Southeastern requires education students to undergo extensive screening interviews, gain significant classroom experience in area elementary and secondary schools, and participate in service learning projects prior to beginning their student teaching. The university maintains partnerships with 26 area school systems and more than 320 area schools for student teaching and clinical experience.

Southeastern Channel receives two Emmys Southeastern’s educational access channel has won regional Emmy Awards for the fourth straight year.

The Southeastern Channel won Emmys for two spots created by videographer-editor Josh Kapusinski, promoting the channel’s “Northshore Gems” travel show and its recently-redesigned Web site and 24-hour webcast.

The winners were announced Dec. 6 in Orlando by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Competition included nominees from television stations and production companies in the Suncoast Region – Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Puerto Rico.

The regional Emmy is the highest honor that local and regional television stations can win. The Southeastern Channel won more Emmys than any other commercial or non-commercial television channel in Louisiana for the second year in a row.

Campus Headlines More nurses enrolling in online degree program Nearly 50 students are enrolled in Southeastern’s new online degree program designed to help registered nurses who have completed associate degree or diploma programs earn their Bachelor of Science degree.

Most have not set foot on campus this semester, instead taking anywhere from one to four accelerated courses at Southeastern that are offered totally online. Some are taking upper level nursing courses, while a number are enrolled in general education courses – such as biology, chemistry, arts and social studies – that are needed to complete requirements for a four-year degree.

The program is part of a special statewide adult learning initiative known as CALL -- the “Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana.” Sponsored by the Louisiana Board of Regents, the project targets individuals who have some college credit but have never earned a baccalaureate degree. Last semester – the first time the program was offered – seven students already enrolled at the university were able to transition into the new program and graduate.

“CALL has enabled us to expand the offerings and geographical reach of our strong nursing program, already one of the largest and most respected in the state,” said President John L. Crain.

Southeastern launches virtual video tour A lively, five-minute Internet tour of Southeastern has been launched to provide prospective students and their parents a quick overview of the university.

Developed in cooperation with the national Web site YOUniversityTV.com, the tour features student, faculty and staff interviews and showcases areas on campus, including the Pennington Student Activity Center, the new residence halls, the War Memorial Student Union and the student-funded fountain memorializing hurricanes Rita and Katrina.

The feature was shot on campus last summer and includes information on degrees offered, admission requirements, student activities, student body composition, Southeastern’s textbook

rental program – the only one of its kind in the state – and costs of tuition, room and board.

“A video tour can never replace an actual on-campus visit, but the YOUniversityTV crew did a great job of showing the campus through the eyes of young students,” said Southeastern Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management Steve Soutullo. “We think it is an excellent addition to our recruiting efforts with area high school students.”

The tour is linked on the “Visit Southeastern” page and in the “Quick Links” dropdown menu on the bottom of every Southeastern Web page. The short feature also airs periodically on the Southeastern Channel.

Graduate nursing program receives accreditation Southeastern’s graduate program in nursing has received a full five-year accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Education.

The program is offered in an intercollegiate consortium with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and McNeese State University.

The accreditation is a “stamp of approval” on the quality and integrity of the graduate program, said President John L. Crain.

“Accreditation indicates that the program has been independently reviewed by peers and found to meet established national standards,” Crain said. “It is a voluntary, self-regulatory process the university believes is essential to assuring our students and the public that the program is one of high quality and effectiveness.”

Donnie Booth, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, said the process included a self-study of the program, a visit by an evaluation team of peers appointed by CCNE, the university’s response to the team report, and final review and approval by the CCNE board of directors.

“We are very proud to be accredited, and much of the credit must go to the excellent faculty we have assembled over the years,” Booth said. “We expect much from our students and they respond with the hard work necessary to be successful in this program.”

CCNE is an autonomous organization of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and is recognized as an official accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education. This is the first time the Southeastern program has been accredited by CCNE, having been accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission since 1996.

Faculty Staff News SBDC'S Ricks honored

by LSBDC Southeastern Small Business Development Center business consultant Wayne Ricks of Independence was one of only two statewide recipients of a “Five Million Dollar Club” award at the Louisiana Small Business Development Center awards reception Jan. 29 in New Orleans. The award recognizes Ricks’ achievement of securing $5 million or more in client capitalization.

Ricks has been a member of the SBDC staff for three years. He is currently working on his MBA at Southeastern, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in finance.

Hammond Chamber honors SBDC and Summers The Hammond Chamber of Commerce recently honored the Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at Southeastern and Associate Director Sandy Summers with a pair of awards at the Chamber’s installation and awards luncheon in January.

The center was selected 2008 Business of the Year for its contributions to the Hammond Chamber and its members.

Summers received the 2008 Volunteer of the Year Award.

Summers has chaired the logistics and operations subcommittee for the Business Expo since 2003 and coordinates numerous seminars and workshops for the business community.

Gunter named assistant vice president for extended studies Joan Gunter, who has served for two years as Southeastern’s program director at the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker, has been appointed the university’s assistant vice president for extended studies.

Her position will oversee off-campus programming, including programming at the St. Tammany Center and the

Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center. Additionally, she is charged with enhancing online course offerings, summer programs and workforce development and training initiatives.

“Ms. Gunter brings to this position significant management experience and skill in higher education administration and has demonstrated her effectiveness in working with both campus and community constituents,” said Southeastern President John L. Crain. “She will play an important role as we look toward expanding the services of this office.”

Policer Officer Giron honored

“It is a blessing to have Officer Giron as an outstanding member of Southeastern’s police force,” said Mike Prescott, chief of the university police department. “George brings a lot of knowledge and skill to our department, and I am extremely proud of his work ethic, integrity and caring for both the university police department and the university community.”

A member of the university police department since 2007, Giron is certified in police mountain bike, advanced interview and interrogation and as a field training officer. He also received P.O.S.T. (Police Officer Standard Training) instructor certification in taser, survival Spanish, and Monadnock Defensive Tactics Systems.

Southeastern Police Officer George Giron was named Officer of the Year by the Hammond City Club, which annually honors local law enforcement personnel serving

Tangipahoa Parish.

Giron was honored at the club’s annual Law Enforcement Awards Banquet in January at Trey Yuen.

KSLU's Adelita Gomez honored for Halloween PSA Adelita Gomez, a senior communication major from Hammond and student music director at Southeastern’s public radio station KSLU 90.9 FM, has been awarded a gold MarCom award for a Halloween safety public service announcement.

Gomez’s eerie Halloween PSA was her third international audio production award. She recently received two International Communicator awards.

Jessica Poumaroux crowned Miss Southeastern 2009 Southeastern communication major Jessica Poumaroux of Baton Rouge was chosen Miss Southeastern 2009. A freshman, Poumaroux received her crown from Miss Southeastern 2008 Brandy Hotard of Port Allen at the annual pageant Feb. 11. Sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, the Miss Southeastern pageant is affiliated with the Miss America Pageant system.

Pomaroux won the pageant’s swimwear segment.

Brittany Reno, Ponchatoula, was first runner up and won the interview and eveningwear segments. Kelly Maloney, Springfield, was second runner up and was the pageant’s talent winner with a contemporary ballet performance. Anna deTiege, Mandeville, was third runner up and was chosen “Miss Congeniality.”

Seven Southeastern music students were among the winners in the Southern Regional competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

More than 400 singers from Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas, including 38 from Southeastern, participated in the competition, held at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches.

Thirty Southeastern students advanced to the semifinal round.

The students are from the vocal music studios of Department of Music and Dramatic Arts faculty David Bernard, Joy Ratliff, Alissa Rowe, Stephen Rushing and Kay Schepker.

Jane Rownd of Hammond, who studies with Bernard, finished first in the Senior Women division, while Paula Vickers of Ponchatoula, a student of Schepker’s, was the first place winner in the Student Adult division.

Southeastern winners also included Tyrone Hayes of New Orleans, second place, Older Advanced Men division; Cara Williams of Franklinton, second place, Junior Women division; Colby McCurdy of Slidell, third place, Young Advanced Men division; William Musso of Independence, third place, Student Adult division; and Darrell Haynes of Boutte, fourth place, Younger Advanced Men division.

Champagne Bingo 2009

Alumni enjoy a day at the races

Approximately 500 FE-Lions and their friends experienced another exciting and fun-filled Champagne Bingo on Jan. 24. A wonderful time was had by all as the ladies sipped champagne, served by Southeastern football players, and enjoyed playing bingo. All proceeds from Champagne Bingo benefit Athletics.

The Alumni Association hosted a trip to the New Orleans Fair Grounds Feb. 8. Alumni and guests traveled to the Fair Grounds on a chartered bus, enjoyed a delicious lunch and had a great time watching their favorite horses race to the finish line.

Basketball alumni reunion

Senior salute Southeastern’s newest alumi were feted on Dec. 10 at the Alumni Center. They celebrated their graduation with a gumbo dinner, cake, and a mini-diploma compliments of the Alumni Association.

Southeastern President John L. Crain congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments and posed for photos.

Former players and coaches gathered Jan. 31 for the fourth annual men’s basketball reunion and watched the Lions play Nicholls State at the University Center. Gene Bartus, who played for the 1950 Lions, was the most “veteran” player there, and also traveled the greatest distance from Midland, Tex.

FE-Lions luncheons

The FE-Lions had a very successful season with multiple sold out luncheons at Trey Yuen. The luncheons were fun-filled and spirited with games and visits by many of the football coaches.

Snow did not prevent Southeastern Alumni who graduated 50 years ago or more and their guests from attending the Golden Grads luncheon on Dec. 12. Members of the honor class of 1958 received honorary diplomas and gold robes. A group of 20 Golden Grads returned the next day to lead the processional at commencement ceremonies. Elsie Burkhalter, UL System board chair, President John L. Crain, Alumni President Pat Williams and Rep. Steve Pugh were there to congratulate the honorees.

Southeastern Alumni teamed up with the University and AT&T to host the Hammond Chamber’s Ham’nd Eggs breakfast event at the Victory Club in Strawberry Stadium on Nov. 5. The standing room only crowd was treated to visits by Roomie and special guest, Sen. David Vitter.

Alumni and friends celebrated Lion football with a tailgate at Nicholls State, the site of the final game of the season. The group also hosted the Spirit of the Southland band, cheerleaders and Lionettes at the tailgate before joining the crowd in the stadium to cheer for the team.

The Alumni Association helped host the Senior Ring Ceremony on Dec. 4. At the ceremony students received their new Southeastern rings, learned the significance of the symbols on their rings, and enjoyed a dessert reception that followed.

A “Pasta and Packing” party was held recently at the Alumni Center for alumni and friends attending the association’s trip to Italy March 15-26. They were given information and tips for their travel to Italy’s greatest cities, including Rome, Florence and Venice.

Development Oscar and Billie Jean Lofton Endowed Scholarship in Athletics

Willard Robertson remembers Dr. Norval Garrett with bequest

Southeastern proudly announces the establishment of the Oscar and Billie Jean Lofton Endowed Scholarship in Athletics (Football). The scholarship was established at the $10,000 level by Oscar and Billie Jean Lofton. The Loftons have a long history with Southeastern and are valued friends.

This scholarship will provide financial support to a deserving student who is attending Southeastern and participating in Southeastern’s intercollegiate football program.

As a result of a bequest from Mr. Willard Robertson ’39, a gift of $10,000 has been presented to the College of Business in honor of the late Dr. R. Norval Garrett. As a result of the generosity of Mr. Robertson, his memory and commitment to Southeastern will continue to benefit our most deserving students for years to come. Mr. Robertson passed away in Milbrae, Calif. on June 17, 2008.

Sanderson Farms gives to Southeastern Southeastern gratefully acknowledges the generosity and commitment of Sanderson Farms’ gift of $10,000 to assist in carrying out the educational mission of the university. Phil Livingston, a member of the Development Foundation board and chairman of two successful Southeastern capital campaigns, serves on the board of Sanderson Farms and facilitated the relationship. Sanderson Farms has been a committed friend to the university, providing financial assistance for over a decade.

The Asoodeh-SJT Scholarship in Technology On behalf of St. James Technologies LLC, Paul Morton, president, recently presented Southeastern with a $10,000 check to fully fund the Asoodeh-SJT Scholarship in Technology. A Southeastern faculty member, Dr. Mike Asoodeh, assistant vice president for technology and chief operations officer, is recognized by SJT as instrumental in the success and advancement of their company.

The endowment comes following a history of successful business relationships between Southeastern and SJT. It is in honor of their high regard for Dr. Asoodeh that the scholarship has been established.

Development Wendy Johns-Lauderdale appointed vice president for University Advancement Wendy Johns Lauderdale will become Southeastern’s new vice president for university advancement. Her appointment, subject to approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, will be effective March 27.

In her current role as assistant vice president for university advancement, she has been in charge of the Advancement Office since the retirement of Dr. Joe Miller from the vice president position this past June.

Johns-Lauderdale joined Southeastern in 2002 as director of development/ planned giving for the Development Foundation. She has more than 20 years experience in non-profit fundraising endeavors as a senior director, employee and volunteer.

The Barbara Tardo Endowed Scholarship in Sculpture Barbara Tardo, a former faculty member and first graduate of Southeastern’s Visual Arts Department, was recognized recently with an endowed scholarship in her name. Established by her colleagues, close friends and former students, the scholarship was announced at a reception preceding the opening of an exhibit of her artworks at Sims Memorial Library.

Those steering the committee to establish the scholarship were Dennis Sipiorski, head of the Visual Arts Department, and her friends and colleagues Jovita and Pat Ferrell, Kim Howes-Zabbia, Denise Holly, Gail Hood, Joey France and Suzanne King. Tardo retired in 2002 after teaching at Southeastern for 35 years and is still fondly remembered.

The Knights of Babylon Endowed Professorship in Communication Sciences and Disorders Through the generosity of William J. Chaucer Jr., the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will have its first endowed professorship. The Knights of Babylon Endowed Professorship in Communication Sciences and Disorders has been established with a gift of $60,000 from William “Bill” Chaucer. The state will match $40,000 to establish an endowment of $100,000 to fund the professorship. The department deals with multiple medical impairments that can affect family dynamics.

Knowing that the Knights of Babylon is a family oriented club, Chaucer determined that the professorship designation was appropriate and an important representation of his values. Southeastern looks forward to recognizing Chaucer, his wife Cheryl, and the Knights of Babylon at the university’s 2009 convocation.

The Dorothy Blossman Endowed Scholarship in English Through the efforts of Mr. Lee Spence, executive director of the Dorothy Blossman Foundation, a $25,000 endowed scholarship has been established. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage a sophomore or junior majoring in English to continue excellence in English studies.

Athletics Southeastern places 59 student-athletes on SLC Commissioner's Honor Roll

Former Lion Huggins re-signs with Buffalo Bills

Southeastern placed 59 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Fall 2008 Academic Honor Roll.

The Southeastern football program placed 22 student-athletes on the list, which recognizes SLC student-athletes in the sports of football, cross country, women’s soccer and volleyball that posted a fall semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The football contingent was highlighted by All-American junior safety Tommy Connors, who had a 3.2 GPA in accounting during the fall. Connors was one of three Lion Academic All-SLC selections

Former Southeastern football standout Felton Huggins was one of seven players to sign future free agent contracts with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, according to a release Felton Huggins by the organization.

Huggins, a 2004 All-American at Southeastern, spent the past two seasons on the Bills’ practice squad after originally signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005. Huggins, who also played for the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe, was one of three players inked for the 2009 campaign that was with the Bills at the beginning of the 2008 season.

In three years with the Lions, Huggins rewrote every receiving record in school history finishing with 162 receptions for 2,350 yards and 22 touchdowns. Huggins caught a school-record 84 passes in 2004 for 1,313 yards and 13 touchdowns as he helped the Lions to a 7-4 record. He recorded eight games with 100 or more yards receiving, including a pair of 200-yard performances.

demic All-SLC team by fellow Lady Lion Honor Roll honorees senior forward Kristin McDonald and junior midfielder Candice Wallace.

Mayer, McDonald and senior forward Janae Sheldon – all Fall Honor Roll recipients – were all All-South Region Scholar Team members. Junior defender Shalayne Heffner was the lone Lady Lion to be named to both the All-Southland Conference team and the Fall Honor Roll.

The cross country program placed 11 student-athletes on the Fall Honor Roll – six males and five females. Heading the male contingent was All-South Region and All-SLC sophomore Henry Rop, a nursing student with a 3.5 GPA in the fall and the 2008 SLC and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. All-SLC selection Dorcus Kapkiai was the top women’s Fall Honor Roll selection.

Pave the Way

Paving the way for academic excellence Alumni, students, and friends of Southeastern Louisiana University are invited to take part in ­" Project Friendship" through the purchase of personalized bricks in Friendship Circle, the historical heart of Southeastern’s campus.

Each brick will accommodate three lines of engraving and up to 16 characters per line, including spacing and punctuation marks. Brick installations will be scheduled twice a year.

Featuring a landscaped park-like setting with historic Friendship Oak as its anchor, Friendship Circle is the centerpiece of the campus. The recent addition of attractive brick sitting walls has enhanced its appeal as the ideal spot for outdoor studying, campus gatherings and Lion tailgating. The bricks will pave fresh pathways that cross Friendship Circle.

Proceeds from the purchase of bricks will be part of the Development Foundation’s Annual Fund, a key source of support for Southeastern’s academic programs. In addition, a portion of your $100 contribution is tax deductible.

Project Friendship bricks are great gifts for students who are about to graduate or those who attended long ago. Alumni may purchase bricks to commemorate their school years. Parents may want to celebrate a future Lion.

Tribute Plaques Friendship Circle now features several sitting walls that provide options for individuals or groups to purchase special tribute plaques. The plaques will be installed along the walls. Southeastern Fire truck The newest addition to the Hammond Fire Department is a truck of a different color – sporting Southeastern green and gold rather than the traditional fire engine red.

The truck’s design was made possible through the generosity of Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Inc., which agreed to using the specialized green and gold paint, Lion logo and designs at a significantly discounted rate.

Assistant Fire Chief Richard “Stormy” Lee first presented the idea of a Southeastern fire truck last year. With the approval of Mayor Mayson Foster, the Hammond Fire Department and President John L. Crain, it was just a matter of finding the funds for the project. The Southeastern Development Foundation, Alumni Association and honor society Gamma Beta Phi all stepped up to the plate.

The truck is housed at the Hammond Fire Department’s University Fire Station at the corner of University Avenue and North Oak Street.
