A BRIEF HISTORY Started in 1925 as Hammond Junior College, Southeastern experienced several periods of growth bringing it from 40 students in 1925 to nearly 15,000 today. In the mid-90’s, Southeastern grew significantly, becoming the fastest growing university in the nation. Today Southeastern is the third largest university in the state with over 75,000 alumni living in all 50 states, over 50 nations and throughout Louisiana.

With one of the nation’s few university-sponsored textbook rental systems, Southeastern saves its students hundreds of dollars in textbook costs every semester.

GUARANTEED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

For those who qualify, Southeastern guarantees four year scholarships ranging from $500 to $7000 per year.

ARTS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES With seven different academic departments, the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is committed to providing a diverse and challenging experience for students. The award-winning faculty are passionate about what they do and create a stimulating and challenging learning environment. Students are taught to think analytically, creatively, and scientifically.

Programs are designed to offer numerous opportunities for students to practice their discipline both in and out of the classroom. Scholarly and creative activities, as well as research projects, provide experiences for students to be recognized and rewarded on a national level.

While there are a number of exciting opportunities in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, perhaps the most exciting is Fanfare. This month-long celebration of the arts features a diverse line-up of national and international artists, scholars, and events to promote cultural awareness in southeast Louisiana. EDUCATION The College of Education is home to the departments of Educational Leadership & Technology and Teaching & Learning. Seasoned faculty members are committed to providing students with a challenging environment through innovative and progressive programs. The overall goal of the college is to develop effective professionals who are leaders in their field and who desire to make a difference in the lives of children, families, and communities.

A trademark of the college is the focus of providing undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities for hands-on application. A perfect example is Southeastern’s Laboratory School located on campus in the Charles E. Cate Teacher Education Center. The Lab School was established in 1940 and enrolls approximately 225 students in grades K–8. Southeastern students pursuing teaching and counseling degrees have the benefit of working with Lab School faculty and students directly in their classrooms. In the spring of 2012, the college opened a new facility, reinforcing its commitment to provide cutting edge programs and state-of-the-art facilities in preparing students to be leaders in their fields of study. With programs in Nursing, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Athletic Training, Health and Physical Education, Kinesiology, Health Studies, and Health Education and Promotion, the college strives to provide excellence in the areas of health education at the local, state, regional, and national levels.

Being a student can be a financial challenge, and Southeastern understands that. We want to ensure that there is a little extra help for those who need it. The Student Food Pantry serves this purpose. The Southeastern Foundation and the office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs operate the pantry with the help of students and volunteers. The Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs works to create a campus environment that encourages and welcomes student diversity. Students needing assistance claiming veteran's benefits under the GI Bill are helped through our Office of Veteran Services. THE SOUTHEASTERN PROMISE

The guaranteed rate includes all mandatory tuition and fees associated with enrollment with the exception of student self-assessed and other variable fees. In the event of any tuition rate increases, students in the program become recipients of a scholarship that will credit the amount of the increase.

A Guaranteed Path to Four-Year Graduation The Southeastern Promise represents a new level of commitment to each of our students and their ability to succeed. Through this ground-breaking program—the only one of its kind in Louisiana —Southeastern promises its students no tuition increases and class availability to ensure their degree completion in four years.

Four-Year to Degree Commitment The four-year graduation component of The Southeastern Promise has been developed to help students pursue clear paths for completing their undergraduate degree in a timely manner.

Graduation within four academic years of initial fall enrollment at Southeastern is ensured, conditioned upon the satisfaction of student eligibility requirements.

Tenets of The Southeastern Promise: 1. Southeastern will offer new freshmen the opportunity to enroll in The Southeastern Promise program 2. Southeastern will provide counseling, if desired, to help the student select a major no later than the first day of class for his or her third semester

Southeastern will provide students with appropriate academic mapping, advising, and counseling to ensure curriculum progress. Academic units will ensure course availability accordingly.

If a student maintains enrollment and follows the academic plan, yet is not able to complete the program in the prescribed four-year timeline due to course unavailability, Southeastern will coordinate a combination of equivalent class substitutions and will cover the applicable tuition and mandatory fees for the student to complete the degree.

3. With a declared major in place, Southeastern will guide the student with a prescribed curriculum and offer ongoing assistance from an assigned academic advisor 4. To stay on track for graduation in four years and maintain program participation, 30 credit hours toward the selected degree program will be earned (Fall, Spring, Summer) each year 5. Good academic standing and a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average are necessary for the four-year duration

How to Sign Up After reading the detailed components of The Southeastern Promise program, students who have completed orientation and are eligible should be prepared to choose an approved major.

Eligible students may then sign up to be a part of the program. southeastern.edu/promise

Students who complete 15 or more Southeastern dual enrollment credit hours can also receive a $1,000 ($500 Fall; $500 Spring) supplementary award for their first year at Southeastern.

This is contingent upon the availability of funds and upon meeting the following criteria:

Fixed Net Tuition Participating students will receive a fixed net tuition rate through four consecutive academic years beginning with the student’s first freshman semester with eligibility remaining in effect through summer of their fourth year. Continued receipt of this benefit is contingent upon uninterrupted student eligibility and plan participation.

• Completion of a minimum of 15 Southeastern dual enrollment credits with a grade of “C” or better.

• Full-time enrollment at Southeastern for the first Fall semester following their high school graduation.

Firsthand experience in other countries and cultures provides a clearer understanding of ourselves, our own society and culture, our place in the global community, and our common human heritage.

Students who do not meet Southeastern’s regular admission criteria are eligible for our Connect to Success Program. This bridge program allows students to enroll through Northshore Technical Community College, located on Southeastern’s campus. After completing 18 hours of college-level coursework, including college algebra and college-level English, and maintaining a 2.0 GPA, students are eligible to transfer to Southeastern. SOUTHEASTERN ARMY ROTC PROGRAM

Here young, future leaders join an ROTC program designed to create second lieutenants who are adaptable and agile leaders of character for the U.S. Army. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is one of the most demanding and successful leadership programs in the country. For years, Army ROTC has been creating leaders who go on to rewarding careers in the military and civilian worlds. southeastern.edu/rotc

The Southeastern Army ROTC college leadership program offers a commission in the Reserve/National Guard in a variety of career fields. OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS—FEE WAIVER INFORMATION Fee Waiver for Non-Residents Southeastern offers fee waivers for non-resident students. The fee waiver does not cover the university’s regular tuition and fees, only the additional out-of-state fees charged to students who are not residents of Louisiana.

For your students with a 3.0 GPA and a 23 on the ACT, an exciting night is planned for them at Southeastern Louisiana University’s Annual Scholars Showcase. Scholars Showcase is an event designed to celebrate academic achievements of our scholarship recipients. It includes a formal dinner in our Student Union Ballroom and special recognition of each guest. Along with these events, the scholarship recipients will be taking a photograph with an honored guest.

The fee waiver scholarships will be available to students meeting the following criteria:

How Do My Students Attend?

Southeastern scholarship recipients will receive an invitation and then should register to reserve their spot. Many of the university’s administration and staff are there to welcome students to the campus.

Beginning Freshman and Transfer students with fewer than 18 hours earned: • For beginning freshman applicants and transfer applicants with fewer than 18 hours earned who graduated from Louisiana high schools in 2004 or later, we request seven semester and/ or final high school transcripts from the Board of Regents and the Louisiana Department of Education’s Student Transcript System. It will not be necessary to have transcripts sent to Southeastern from high school unless the student graduated before 2004, or we are unable to obtain their records from the state.

• If a student took the G.E.D. or HiSet, a copy of his or her scores or diploma must accompany the application.

• Students who graduated from a state-approved home study program should submit a copy of their home-school transcript if available.

Southeastern departmental credit examinations are administered in the summer, fall, and spring to Southeastern students and to entering students.

1. A student interested in taking departmental credit examinations may obtain the request forms at the academic department.

2. A student will have the request form approved by his/her department head, the dean of his/her college, and the head of the department administering the examination.

3. The University charges a non-refundable fee of $25 per credit examinations.

4. Credit examinations are given on the undergraduate level and on a limited basis in certain graduate degree programs.

Southeastern values the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and welcomes applications from IB students. The IB Diploma Programme is a comprehensive two-year curriculum leading to examinations evaluated on international criteria.

Students are encouraged to submit their IB diploma record or examination results with their application for evaluation.

• For students completing IB coursework, a maximum of 30 credit hours may be awarded for scores of 5 or above on standard level or 4 and above on higher level examinations (See table below.) ORIENTATION

Southeastern hosts a series of orientation programs, inviting students who have been accepted for the upcoming fall, spring, or summer terms to get a jump on the transition to college. Participants get a crash course in College 101 with everything from learning about policies and procedures to meeting with faculty advisers and registering for classes. Don’t worry; it's not all work and no play.

The program is filled with informative and fun activities including outdoor barbecues, spirit competitions and Lion Fest — an evening full of music, dancing, food and fun.

Federal Work Study: In addition to the student worker opportunities, Southeastern facilitates the Federal Work-Study Program that includes the Community Service Work-Study and America Reads Challenge.

Loans are a major source of financial aid for many students. All loans must be repaid. There are several types of loans with different terms, conditions, interest rates, and requirements. Southeastern offers the following education loan options: Federal Direct Stafford Loans Including both subsidized and unsubsidized loans, these are education loans in the student’s name and are applied for through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). studentloans.gov

Federal Perkins Loans The Federal Perkins Loan provides a low-interest loan option for upperclass students with demonstrated financial need. Availability of the Federal Perkins Loan is often limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. studentloans.gov Federal PLUS Loans The Federal Parent PLUS Loan enables parents of dependent undergraduate students with good credit history the opportunity to borrow additional money to cover education expenses. The parent applying for the PLUS loan must be listed on the student’s FAFSA. FEDERAL AND STATE GRANT PROGRAMS The Federal and State Grant Programs offered by Southeastern include the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), the Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH), and the Louisiana GO Grant.

The FAFSA is the application for these grant programs. These grants are need-based aid programs that do not need to be repaid.

Federal Pell Grant The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based awards to undergraduate students only. Eligibility is determined by the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the cost of attendance, and the student’s enrollment status.

Federal FSEOG Grant The Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Eligibility is determined by the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the cost of attendance, and the student’s enrollment status. Funding for the Federal FSEOG Grant is limited.

Federal TEACH Grant The Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is available to both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree or certification in an education program.

Louisiana GO Grant The Louisiana GO Grant is a state-funded grant available to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. To receive this grant a student must be a Louisiana resident and meet the criteria as set forth by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance. Funding for the Louisiana GO Grant is limited.

With over 130 campus organizations, there is always something to do on campus. Students will find something they are interested in and can quickly build connections and friends on campus. Students who are involved succeed at a greater rate and graduate faster than those who do not.

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

Southeastern hosts performances and visual art exhibitions on campus and at our Columbia Theatre in downtown Hammond.
