Over 500 students moved into two new residence halls, Twelve Oaks and Ascension Halls, this year. The new state-of-the-art facilities meet the growing need for on-campus housing.

A Message FROM THE PRESIDENT

As the calendar year comes to a close and we reflect on our accomplishments, I can report to you with confidence that the state of affairs at Southeastern is strong. In the past academic year, we’ve opened new facilities, grown enrollment, and realized success across campus. I am proud to continue to serve as president of such an institution and be a witness to how many lives are changed by passing through its halls.

Last year I reported that we opened the new Computer Science and Technology Building. It has been a real game changer, with new lab space and increased capacity for the fast-growing academic programs it serves. This fall we opened new state-ofthe-art residence halls to meet the continued demand for student housing.

These facilities utilize a hybrid geothermal system for heating and cooling and are among the first university residential facilities in the nation to have this environmentally responsible system. Our campus improvements are evidence of our focus on the needs of today’s students.

Southeastern is here to serve students, and it is our great faculty and staff who make that possible through their incredible hard work and commitment. As someone who has come through the ranks over three decades, I understand the strong work ethic that comes from seeing our job as a mission to help students succeed. I am forever proud of what our faculty and staff continue to accomplish for our students each and every year.

This year’s successes and the commitment of our Southeastern family show that Southeastern has charted a path to greater success.

With your help, the Foundation also experienced success this year. The current business model for universities, Southeastern among them, relies on significant financial support. The importance of your donations, your support, and your help cannot be overstated. We need your involvement, and for it, I thank you.

Southeastern’s success, the success of our students, and your support show that we remain true to our mission to lead the educational, economic, and cultural development of our region.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the support you give to Southeastern. Your support of our University is a necessary component of its overall success. As a proud alumna I want my alma mater to continue to grow in its greatness and its ability to help students reach their educational pursuits and goals. Outside support from donors and alumni like you make a daily difference in the lives of students. You should be as proud of yourself as I am of your generosity and dedication to Southeastern.

As I begin my term as Chair of the Board of the Foundation, I am honored and humbled to serve the University alongside a talented and diverse Foundation Board and University Advancement team of professionals. I see much success that I hope to capitalize on. This past year, the Foundation received some extraordinary large gifts and investments. One such was a donation by Performance Contractors’ president, Art Favre, to help facilitate the creation of a new welding technology program. His investment in the future of Southeastern will help fulfill the needs of regional industry and global companies, like Performance. This new program will be a great success story that demonstrates how impactful the Foundation can be to help the University.

The Foundation also saw its endowment again grow to its largest balance in history.

Crossing the $50 million mark is something of which we should all be proud. This year we were also able to donate a significant level of support to Southeastern—nearly $2.5 million. Foundation funds go to fill needs across campus from academic to athletic support and from scholarships to student emergency funds.

We have a strong advancement and philanthropic development program and I am excited to be a part of it. In my term, I hope to continue to strengthen: • Fundraising and advocacy for the University • Engagement with and support to the University • The Foundation Board’s operational effectiveness and service to the University I hope you will join me and the many supporters of Southeastern in our continued efforts to invest in Southeastern and its students, pushing further for their success.

Working together, we can continue to accomplish great things for Southeastern. Your support in the past has helped us continue to keep Southeastern strong as not only a great learning institution but also an economic asset to the region, and for that I cannot thank you enough.

YOU HAVE MADE AN IMPACT Every Day of the Year The Southeastern Louisiana University Foundation’s motto is “Building a Legacy of Student Success.” Each year, the University’s Division of University Advancement, within which the Southeastern Foundation is housed, facilitates events, engages with donors and supporters, conducts fundraising efforts, builds relationships with regional businesses, works to strengthen the brand and identity of the University, and much more. These efforts build the opportunity for access to a university education and successful outcomes for students upon graduation. The funds provided by the generosity of supporters like you makes an immediate and ongoing impact on Southeastern students, creating opportunities for them to succeed in their daily lives and in their future careers.

These short stories illustrate just a small fraction of the daily impact that the Foundation—and more importantly, you— have on Southeastern and its students.

SEPTEMBER 25 “The Edward G. Schlieder Professorship in Environmental Studies and Sustainability provides students with direct hands-on field and research opportunities,” says Dr. Christopher Beachy, the Department Head of Biological Sciences. Dr. Beachy has been awarded this professorship and the funding provided enables his research on amphibians to directly include students. Their work on amphibians in the Florida Parishes of Louisiana allows the students to monitor environmental health while advancing their own knowledge and understanding.

AUGUST 20, 2017 Danaysha Carter begins her college career at Southeastern as an accounting major. As an outstanding honors student, Danaysha qualified for the Yvette Hart Maxwell Memorial Scholarship in Accounting. She states, “Every little bit helps, and I am so appreciative of the donors of this scholarship for the help.”

One of the goals of the Foundation is to help increase student access to a college degree through scholarships.

The Foundation currently has over 400 scholarships funded.

NOVEMBER 14 Funds from Chefs Evening purchased new high-definition and remote studio equipment which helps Southeastern Channel television, video, and film students gain real-world experience. By increasing their skills and familiarity with this now industry standard equipment, these students will be met with broader and stronger job prospects upon graduation.

OCTOBER 17 Photography students are better able to build their portfolios and experience thanks to the acquisition of an Epson SureColor P8000 large format printer which was funded by the Foundation’s Day of Giving. With the new ability to print images up to 42� wide, students can create prints of a scale that is more in keeping with the demands of the contemporary art world.

JANUARY 23, 2018 Education students use the Guidry Family Avatar Simulation Lab in the College of Education to fine tune their interpersonal skills with virtual pupils before ever entering an actual classroom. Live interactions in this simulation build familiarity and confidence so that future teachers are prepared from day one.

DECEMBER 7 Southeastern’s Food Pantry provides help for students in need. Aided by donations and volunteers, this on-campus resource serves approximately 150 young adults per month—offering sustenance and alleviating a burden for these students, which in turn allows them to better achieve their academic goals.

MARCH 19 Thanks to funding from the Junghans Endowment, members of the student organization Institute for Supply Management visit the Chic-fil-A headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, for an immersive learning and networking experience. In addition to travel opportunities, the endowment positively impacts countless students though support of a variety of studentfocused initiatives, including scholarships, peer leadership, and outreach and engagement activities.

FEBRUARY 20 A new server for KSLU, Southeastern’s radio station, helps provide students and the region with uninterrupted educational radio programming and exposure to a broader array of music. In addition to more room for songs, this server upgrade alleviates susceptibility to the hacks and crashes which have plagued many other public radio stations. Support from the Annual Giving program provided funding.

MAY 12 Zachary, Louisiana, native Shelby Eisworth graduates with a degree in Business Management. As the recipient of the Clausen Family First-Generation Scholarship, Shelby was supported by the extra funds to become the first in his family to earn a college degree. Currently, he is taking it one step further as an MBA student, also here at Southeastern. “Having this extra support really made a difference to me,� says Shelby.

APRIL 18 As preparation for the medical field continues to advance, the quality of preparatory experiences for students must advance also. The John & Beverly Manzella Simulation Lab significantly increases the hands-on access for students to prepare before actually working with patients. This lab has provided invaluable learning opportunities for nursing students since its opening. Funded by a donation from the Manzellas, this lab shows the direct value of private support for academics.

JUNE 28 Students that find themselves in difficult or even dire financial situations draw on the Southeastern Foundation Emergency Fund. This fund, supported by the contributions of generous donors, helps take care of immediate expenses for students that have temporary financial troubles.

In March of 2018, the Foundation donated its ownership of the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center to Southeastern.

This transfer was made in order to better integrate programming and associated costs and revenues into University finances. The net value of the property and equipment at the time of transfer was $3,870,711.69.

The overall assets of the Foundation remain strong and continue to grow.

Just over a year after opening, the Computer Science and Technology Building has become a vital center of activity for the fast growing computer science and industrial and engineering technology programs.
