WORDS FROM OUR MAYOR It was hard not to feel some sense of relief as we waved

and coordinate donations of essential items.

Although the Penrith community was largely spared from the path of the fires, we witnessed their ferocity firsthand. Many of us mobilised, offering accommodation or safe spaces to people evacuating, along with their animals. Our firies fought shoulder to shoulder with other volunteers from around the country.

Local businesses rallied to raise funds

And this was on top of the fundraising our community has already been doing in support of drought-affected farmers.

As always, I’m beyond proud to serve and represent this community.

Our resilience and eagerness to lend a helping hand is clear in times of crisis.

AFTER FIRES HOW OUR COMMUNITY IS HELPING THE BUSH TO RECOVER

WE’VE ALL HEARD THE CRUSHING NUMBER – ONE BILLION NATIVE ANIMALS KILLED AND OVER 15 MILLION ACRES OF HABITAT LOST IN THE HORROR OF LAST SUMMER’S BUSHFIRES. BUT AS FIERCE AS THAT LOSS WAS, THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN JUST AS POWERFUL: THESE ARE STORIES OF SOME LOCAL HEROES, AND HOW YOU CAN HELP.

Bush Regeneration Officer Jen

Jen spends a lot of her time traversing local bushland reserves; there are more than 60 of them in the Penrith area. As one of Council’s Bush Regeneration Officers, it’s her job to be in tune with how the local environment is holding up. As the drought has dragged on and creeks have run dry, Jen has seen the need for native animals to have access to constant sources of fresh water.

So Council partnered with Local Land Services on a project to install wildlife water stations, which provide drinking water for wombats, kangaroos, goannas and other lizards, birds, possums and even some koalas.

Council is calling for volunteers from the community to help refill these water stations every three weeks. Wombats and kangaroos tend to drink a bit more than other animals, so water stations where these species visit may need more frequent top ups.

Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), a trusted not-for-profit organisation with their NSW office in Penrith, was selected to coordinate volunteers across the country wanting to assist with fireground recovery.

CVA have been doing bush regeneration since 1982. After a bushfire, that work includes plant and animal surveys, especially for threatened species;

weed removal and tree planting, also called revegetation; and artificial habitat installation, to provide shelter and protection for animals.

Protection is essential, because predators like feral cats and foxes thrive in the aftermath of fires. As do introduced plant species, which rob water and nutrients from our native flora while it’s trying to recover. So, while it’s true that the Australian bush is remarkably resilient to fire, human help is also critically important to its recovery.

Muru Mittigar is a unique social enterprise, an Aboriginal cultural institution. Among the many activities they undertake – which include providing Indigenous land management services to clients, visiting schools and placing Aboriginal people into employment – Muru Mittigar also operate a native nursery in Llandilo.

The nursery specialises in plant species from the Cumberland Plain, in addition to the sandstone species of the Blue Mountains and Greater Sydney Basin.

You’ll find trees, shrubs, climbers, grasses and ground covers at the •7•

nursery, which caters for everything from large revegetation projects requiring tens of thousands of trees, right down to smaller orders of a handful of plants for the home gardener.

As the Penrith area’s population grows and houses are built, it’s essential that we revegetate with plants native to our area.

In doing so, we’ll be giving our native bees, birds and animals the best possible start in finding shelter, the right food and a fighting chance in surviving drought and fire.

Many of us don’t know, but the Penrith area has one of the most sustainable, forwardthinking waste systems in NSW. Only a handful of local Councils offer it across the state, and Penrith is the only one in the Sydney Metropolitan area. It’s called Food Organics and Garden Organics, or FOGO for short.

FOGO was born because of the staggering amount of food waste that we put into our red lidded bin, also known as our ‘landfill bin’. Food waste is not meant to go to landfill (more on that in a moment), but many Australians are blissfully unaware of this, with food waste making up an average of 35% of red bins each week, according to OzHarvest.

So why is it so bad to send food waste to landfill? When food waste decays in a landfill site, breaking down amidst other random assorted materials, it creates methane – a greenhouse gas with emissions that are 25 times more harmful than CO2.

But when broken down properly and composted with other organic materials, food waste can be made into fertiliser, nutritious food for soil which helps plants grow. That’s a win for the earth, and a win for the atmosphere.

In the FOGO waste system, the intention is for your green lidded bin to be your main weekly bin. Into your green lidded bin you put all your organic waste – grass clippings, leaves and branches, leftover food, fruit and veg scraps, bones and even paper towels.

The other two bins are collected every fortnight (although if needed, you can opt to have them picked up more frequently for an additional fee).

Council organises delivery of green compostable bags every three months.

You can use these to line your countertop compost bin, or ‘kitchen tidy’. These bags can go straight into the green lidded bin outside when full.

If you run out sooner, they’re available for free at Council’s offices and libraries.

In theory we’d all love to reduce our food waste down to zero, but it seems inevitable that each week we’ll be binning leftovers and food scraps. As long as the bin you use for this is your green lidded bin, there’s no need to feel guilty.

After our green lidded bins are collected, the organic waste is trucked off to be composted. A lot of the compost comes back to Penrith for use as fertiliser in our local parks. So by putting your food scraps into your green bin, you’ll actually be helping our local plants and trees to thrive in our playgrounds, nature Green strips and parks. compostable

Up-to-date, contemporary facilities will include a new foyer and kiosk, accessibility improvements, plus a fresh new façade. This is one of Council’s biggest upgrades of a community facility in a decade.

ROBIN WILES PARK

WHO WAS ROBIN WILES? You might recognise this name from the Robin Wiles Park in North St Marys, but do you know the story of this wonderful woman?

Robin grew up on a farm in the area that is now St Marys Village Shopping Centre. She became an important local figure, organising the St Marys Spring Festival and working for a local politician.

SHADE FOR ALL In April, Council staff will begin installing shade sails and structures in playgrounds all around the Penrith local government area. This will provide much-needed shade so the community can enjoy these play spaces all year round.

After running for Council in 1991, Robin was elected as a Councillor and served two terms. She had a talent for bringing people together.

She was a peace maker and a pioneer, which is why the park in North St Marys is named in her honour.

COUNCIL IS INVESTING IN A NUMBER OF INNOVATIVE GREEN PROJECTS WHICH WILL TRANSFORM PENRITH INTO A CITY OF PARKS. BREAKING AWAY FROM THE CONCRETE JUNGLES OF THE INNER CITY, PENRITH WILL BECOME ONE OF THE MOST LIVEABLE PLACES IN METROPOLITAN SYDNEY AND BEYOND.

REGATTA PARK Council is embarking on the $24 million Regatta Park project which will upgrade the existing park for events and active play, with better access to the beautiful Nepean River. The upgrade will be jointly funded, with $15 million coming from the Australian and NSW Governments and $9 million from Council.

Q Theatre is commissioning a reimagining of a musical first performed 42 years ago D called E L L E they’re calling St Marys Kid, and ANC C for community participation.

Workshops on 15-16 May will showcase songs and scenes in development.

A suite of exhibitions is celebrating 40 years since the Gallery was established. Art Lives Here will take place in the heritage modernist Ancher House, Circle of Friends in the Lewers House while the Gallery will host a solo exhibition.

High Street has been the backbone of Penrith since the start of our recorded history.

HIGH STREET CIRCA 1906

It’s been the scene of some wild events. In 1890, Sergeant James Beatty of Penrith police was murdered while on duty in High Street.

The policeman was confronting an unruly man who was passing through town, and was fatally stabbed in the line of duty.

The 1920s saw the heyday of the Nepean Picture Theatre on High Street. It was run by Lisle “Pop” Spence, an Alderman and Mayor of Penrith.

He showed films three days a week at the theatre, and also held live events like boxing matches and concerts.

His son Bruce took over running the theatre in the 1940s, and it remained a central part of local social lives right up until the 1970s.

CIRCA 2020 Since then, High Street has taken different forms; a pedestrian mall in the 80s gave way to an eclectic mix of small bars, artisan cafes and independent stores, which today contribute to the bustling energy along the strip. These local

shops and businesses can’t be found anywhere else in the world – they are completely unique to Penrith.

WITH ITS QUAINT ARCADES AND UNIQUE INDEPENDENT SHOPS, HIGH STREET REMAINS THE BACKBONE OF OUR CITY.
