The days have gone where expensive china gathers dust in the cabinet until the next fancy dinner party.

Now, many of us realise that if we’re going to spend good money on handmade dinner plates, sculptural bowls and textural cups, we want to enjoy the experience of using them every single day. It seems the huge appetite for beautiful ceramics is not abating any time soon. And why would it? They’re probably the most appreciated artworks in our houses.

We visit the Pāpāmoa studio of Suzy Granger, the talent behind Slab Ceramics (29), to learn more about her inspiration and process.

The Bay is home to many sporting stars and teams, but did you know that speed climbing — now an Olympic sport — has its national base right here too? We actually have the country’s only Olympic speed climbing wall. We talk to New Zealand coach Rob Moore about the development of the sport and his vision for one day having it in schools.

We also check out the latest Tauranga CBD action. Firstly, Picnicka (82) is about to open at Thirty Eight Elizabeth (site of the new Farmers flagship store). As it’s owned by Noel and Kim, of local restaurants Clarence and Alpino, we know the kai and vibe will likely be spot on. Real Takeaways Casual Kitchen was founded by chef Grant Mclellan, who started creating frozen meals from his modified garage, using homegrown produce, mainly for the elderly market. He soon realised there was a much wider market for his nutritionally balanced, tasty offerings, such as Hand-me-down beef lasagne, Take My Time pulled lamb filo, and vego tagine.

He outgrew his vege patch and has graduated to a CBD shop that’s slated to open about mid-April.

From Scratch Anna Brick, sourdough baker extraordinaire, has now opened a new HQ for her company, Better Bread — Best Bakehouse in Pāpāmoa.

Here you’ll find her full range of sourdough (such as soft oat, seeded, and olive and herb), along with focaccia and Turkish pide. “We’re about quality, from-scratch baking, and we champion sustainable and organic where possible — it’s a key value for us,” says Anna. “We serve Supreme coffee — having the best coffee in Pāpāmoa is a main focus, and we’ll always have warm and friendly service.” Anna explains they’re based in a very busy hub, so Best Bakehouse is designed for quick food and coffee pick ups (it has just 12 seats). What’s Up The Whole Story Wildflour bakery has just open its first shop front, and owner and baker Mel Truman says it’s a long awaited move. “I’ve always wanted to be behind the counter!

We’ve always sent our baking off to cafes, so we don’t get to see people enjoying our food. Challenge Accepted Covid has put paid to the usual fundraising events that are vital for Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust (the charity doesn’t rely on government or DHB money), so it needed a new event that didn’t involve big congregations. The result: Aotearoa 100k’s in 30 Days. Held during May, people of all ages and capabilities are encouraged to sign up to cover 100km on foot, on water, or on wheels (bikes, wheelchairs, scooters!), or a combination of the three. Hidden Haven Nook is a yoga and Pilates studio launched by Kristin Borchardt and Maddie Lysaght (pictured, right). The space is upstairs from Natural Fit gym, kind of in a nook, hence the name. Kristin has been teaching yoga for 12 years in our area and specialises in vinyasa but also teaches yin, slow flow and restorative classes.

Maddie teaches Pilates, and Nook offers both mat and barre pilates. The space is often made cosy with pulled curtains and candles during slower classes. The odd restorative mini retreat is offered too, usually a few hours on a Friday evening or Sunday, culminating in meditation, then shared food. Bay Botanics Kat Knight (pictured, left, embracing a Hoya carnosa) has been around plants her entire life. As a child, she helped her family sell plants at markets, she has a degree in landscape architecture and has her own nursery, Bay Botanics (341 Ōropi Rd), where she specialises in a large range of houseplants, from chain of hearts to watermelon peperomia.

“Buying direct from a local grower means your plants are cheaper, as there is no middle man,” says Kat, who focuses on making houseplants affordable for anyone. “My goal is to make every home in the Bay, and beyond, filled with life and thriving plants!”

Kat absolutely loves TLBM atmosphere and Bay Botanics has a stall every second and fourth Saturday (her nursery is open first and third weekends of the month, Friday–Sunday, 10am–2pm). “It’s so nice to be part of a market family, everyone always seems to really love being there!” she says.

Juliana De Cesare is a surf-loving Brazilian illustrator and designer that has made Mt Maunganui home.

She creates delightful artwork inspired by the ocean, the surf community and nature, under the brand ThreeFootRides.

“I would describe my artwork as colourful and a bit funky, and I’d like to think that it’s very diverse/ inclusive — Illustrating different body shapes and skin colours,” she says. Her feelgood designs also feature on greeting cards, stickers, metal key rings, tote bags and decorative washi tape.

Her (very affordable!) prints are handpainted and/or drawn, then finished digitally and printed with long-lasting archival ink on acid-free, archival matte paper. She has a wide range of designs in various sizes, but is open to custom jobs for people who want something bigger. They also make perfect gifts.

In her spare time, Juliana loves surfing, of course, as well as gardening, film photography and connecting with her local community.

“We both have very different styles. Lea is very detailed in his drawings, he enjoys exploring space and he likes his drawings to be close to reality — with some artistic licence, obviously. With mine, it’s more a feeling of the place. I like clumsiness and lots of colours. But we both love bringing the personality of a town into a piece of art.”

The creative duo are grateful both to live at the Mount and in New Zealand (“there is an endless source of inspiration — just a long walk at the beach has so many things we want to paint — sounds cheesy but is true”), and Pilla says that while their illustrations of the Mount, their unique Tauranga map and a new one featuring a sunset surf are the most popular offerings, they’re always working on new art prints, and welcome commissions.

Drawing the Way “Oh, that’s a good question!” says artist Marcella Diaz (known as Pilla), when asked what part The Little Big Markets have played in her and partner Leandro (Lea) Baud’s business in the Bay. “We arrived in New Zealand nine years ago [Pilla is Colombian, Lea Argentinian], and at the end of 2020 we came to Tauranga to visit a friend.

We went to the markets and we fell so in love with it that we decided to move here. We were looking for a place to sell our prints and the markets were exactly what we were looking for.

“This was the best move we ever made,” says Pilla. “When we moved here we both had day jobs and Drawing the Way was our side hustle, but around midlast year we both started working full time on it, and it would never have been possible if the market didn’t exist. Here we have the chance to talk directly with our clients, we get feedback, we can try new things.”

The couple’s main goal with Drawing the Way, which specialises in illustrated maps, is “to bring a bit

The result was Five Percent Brands, which Tania describes as a lifestyle company with community at its core. “We create positive and impactful change by donating 5 percent of our annual profits to many mental health organisations locally and nationally. Ultimately we create lifestyle products that inspire adventure and encourage a healthy lifestyle but our real passion and drive comes from supporting those who are living with mental health issues.”

Currently in the process of setting up their brand new warehouse, head office and showroom in Pāpāmoa, Tania credits both TLBM and the Bay of Plenty as fundamental elements in the success of all three businesses. “Either brand or the company as a whole wouldn’t be where they are now if it weren’t for the support from the TLBM team and, man, we have some incredibly talented people here doing some really cool shit! It’s so inspiring!

“The products we create were inspired by where we live and the way we run our businesses ensures Todd has time to surf and we get our respective families down to the beach as much as we can. I also think the tight community here has inspired us to want to do more around mental wellbeing too.” Ⓟ

Five Percent Brands: Noxen and Me & the Brave The spirit of The Little Big Markets has always been one of creativity, collaboration and community, and stallholders Tania Eves and Todd Hilleard are among those who really embody this.

“Back in 2018, Todd and I independently started our brands Noxen and Me & the Brave,” explains Tania, “Noxen being a surf label born out of Todd’s need for a bigger hooded poncho towel for after surfing, and Me & the Brave [wool fedoras and beanies] born out of my desire to create a community of women that supported each other to make brave choices about the lives they want to live.”

The pair met at TLBM in late 2019 and got chatting about their respective businesses. “We realised there were a lot of synergies in the way we ran them but that our skills were complimentary, Todd was strong on the financial side of things and I was strong on the marketing and product development side,” says Tania.

“We started spending a few days a week working in the same place and helping each other in the areas we were struggling with, and the conversations soon started moving more towards the direction of what we could do together. We were both giving back — Todd to mental health and me to NZ Women’s Refuge, and we’d have conversations about the positive impact we could have on our communities if we could generate more revenue, therefore more profits to donate! We decided to

A stretch of fine Pāpāmoa sand is granting artist Suzy Granger creative and personal gratification.

The former primary school teacher and Slab Ceramics founder produces a range of hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramics in her garden studio, five minutes’ walk from the ocean’s edge. Dune contours and textures inspire her. So do the shapes carved by waves. Sometimes, she will whip locally-gathered sand into liquid clay to create Japanese-inspired yunomi cups or speckled vases and vessels. Several pieces feature a raw, grainy exterior that showcases the sandy clay. “The beach is a big influence. It’s quite precious.

We always wanted to live here and it’s my place.”

This particular edge of the Pacific Ocean is also her playground. She swims in the sea most days, surfs often and walks the family dog Yoshi along kilometres of coastline as she dreams up new designs for retail outlets and markets, or her online store.

However, the journey to Bay of Plenty living has taken decades and involved another 30

continent as well as matching uniforms. Both Suzy and Warren, her husband-to-be, were wearing lifeguard outfits the day they met, on duty at London’s Fulham Pools in England. Eventually, the Kiwi traveller and her British beau booked flights for a New Zealand holiday.

The visit was in honour of her father’s sixtieth birthday but Warren, an outdoor education graduate, convinced his girlfriend they should also embark on a bicycle tour of the North Island. “I remember riding the Desert Road, swearing and crying out ‘what the hell am I doing’.” Their journey ended prematurely in Palmerston North, when they discovered Suzy was six weeks pregnant.

The return ticket was cancelled and they stayed put. Suzy’s sister was already living in the city, they found work, raised two daughters and grew fond of the rugged western coast’s Foxton Beach.

A decade ago, the Bay of Plenty’s east coast waves and sunshine lured the couple north to buy

Mixing glazes is heavy work, so is hefting a 10kg clay pack onto the workbench where it’s kneaded to release any air bubbles. Every mug or pot or jug is carted out to the dedicated kiln shed on a small trolley, to be fired, before being carted back in again. Her clothes and short-clipped nails are consistently caked in a milky film and her brain whirs with ideas.

In fact, the artist has to reign herself in and remember work is not her sole focus. She’s determined to make time for coffee with friends and holidays with family, and space to branch out creatively rather than repeatedly churning out orders for matching pieces.

“It’s amazing up here. There really are lots of opportunities for ceramics and there’s so much support for small business and local business.

People contact me all the time, wanting to stock our ceramics and that’s wonderful but I have to be

their basic Kiwi bach. “We’ve both always loved the sea and it’s wonderful living here,” she says of their Pāpāmoa life. “We feel like we’ve come home.”

Daughter Poppy and her husband Jake currently reside on the property, awaiting a more affordable time to buy their own place. The potter’s wheel and workbench have been installed in a converted lean-to, on the edge of the garden.

In lieu of permanent walls, the studio has clear plastic cafe blinds that are rolled up in summer to admit cicada song and a skiff of sea breeze.

The vegetable garden lies just beyond mass-planted marigolds, and there’s ready access to the outdoor shower and the surfboard rack. In colder months, blinds come down, the heater goes on and the studio is a cosy bubble.

Chilly weather is never a problem though, thanks to the physicality of her chosen pursuit. It’s tough on her hands and back, and she practices yoga daily — Suzy previously taught Iyengar yoga — to counteract the stresses on her body. There is 32

“I think we’ve all got imperfections and I love that side of the philosophy.

“And Jake’s so good with details. I’ve taught him to make hand-built butter conditioners and he’s picked it up really quickly. I trust him. I make 99 percent of the work but it’s really nice to have that support.”

Suzy’s mother was an English art school graduate who studied interior design and painted watercolours throughout her life. Her father’s parents were also British, though he grew up on a Sri Lankan tea estate. When the couple emigrated to New Zealand and bought a dairy farm overlooking the Kaipara Harbour, north of Auckland, they gifted their daughter an idyllic, bucolic, horse-riding childhood.

Suzy’s first brush with formal art training happened later in life when she was a mother of two embarking on a teaching career.

Much as she relished her work as a specialty literacy teacher — “the children made me laugh every

a bit discerning. I think it’s important, as an artist, to have time to explore, to have a little sabbatical.”

The business is very much a family affair.

Warren is a former sport and recreation lecturer who now provides student support at Toi Ohomai when he’s not helping man the Slab Ceramics stall at The Little Big Markets. Poppy manages the accounts and looks after social media pages for her mother, while studying graphic design. She and big sister Zhoe, who is an Elam art school graduate and New York-based artist, are also heavily involved in branding and marketing decisions.

Son-in-law Jake is a picture framer in a Tauranga gallery and provides periodic hands-on help in the studio. He and Suzy share a love of Japanese ceramics and of that culture’s wabi-sabi philosophy that celebrates imperfections. When a kiln firing recently went awry and several pieces cracked, it was Jake who took charge of reinventing the works.

He used gold dust and resin to highlight rather than hide the cracks, using a Japanese process known as 33

“The markets have been amazing for us.

We love going. We let people know we’ll be there on social media and it’s so lovely when you have people coming down specifically to find you. We have our regulars now.

“Like any creative outlet, you’ve got to have that audience, that feedback and connection.

I do get quite surprised when people like it or love it.

You always make yourself kind of vulnerable when you’re putting it out there, see it in a shop and think, ‘was it good enough?’. But I’m just making what I want to make, not trying to fit into anywhere.” Ⓟ

day” — her creative pursuits became increasingly important. Initial interest in painting gave way to curiosity about ceramics. Feilding’s pottery club members generously shared their knowledge, exposing the novice to varied styles and techniques, and setting her up with an old pedal-powered potter’s wheel. As her confidence grew, she experimented more and found a style she liked.

Admiring friends began asking if they could buy her work and Slab Ceramics was born. These days, her own kitchen is dotted with “wonky” rejects and seconds — a planter and a cutlery holder, a colander for eggs, the fruit bowl, a jug.

The Magic of Mushrooms

Mushrooms range from delicious to dangerous. Look beyond the ubiquitous buttons in the supermarket and you’ll find wonderfully diverse varieties grown right here in the Bay. 38

Mushrooms are truly incredible; some deliciously edible and some quite terrible. But there’s way more than meets the eye with these fun guys…

For starters, humans and animals are more closely related to fungi than we are to plants and bacteria. This intriguingly spongy family holds the record for being the oldest and largest living organism on earth to date. The fungi whānau has more than 1.5 million different species, of which only about 20,000 produce the fruiting bodies that we call mushrooms.

And while mushrooms can be a nutritious and tasty part of our diet, and sometimes used for medicinal purposes, some are poisonous, so an element of caution needs to be taken before you eat that mushroom you found in the park while walking your dog.

A mushroom is the reproductive part of a larger fungal mass called mycelium, which consists of lots of root-like fibres called hyphae, that spread underground. Just as plants have roots, the bulk of fungi live and grow in the soil, and these networks grow through the ground in search of food. Unlike humans, who have an internal digestive system, fungi gets its energy by breaking down and digesting its food externally. As the age-old questions goes: if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Well, it seems fungi hear the sound of food falling and the mycelium comes a-runnin’.

Fungi are well known to be great decomposers.

They breakdown material that has died and recycle it into available nutrients for other life (such as plants) to consume for growth. However, there are some types of fungi that actually help plants to grow.

These types of fungi are called mycorrhizal fungi and they form a mutually beneficial relationship with living plants. The threads of the mycorrhizal mycelium latch on to the roots of a plant and the whole fungal network becomes an extension of the plants root system, gathering more water and nutrients than the plant would normally get on its own. In exchange, the fungi absorb the carbonrich liquid that the plant excretes from their roots as a food source for its growth.

This relationship is more prevalent in longer living woody trees that provide lots of shade for the fungi than it is in fleshy vegetables with a shorter life span. That being said, there are delicious edible mushrooms, like the wine cap variety, that happily grow in all-day sun alongside your favourite vegetables.

Mushroom medley Here at home, in our beautiful Bay of Plenty, I’m very pleased to say that there are plenty of different edible mushrooms that we can grow, buy or forage.

As I cautioned before, you really have to be 100 percent certain about a mushroom found in the wild, or even in your garden, before ingesting it, as there are mushrooms out there with serious, even deadly, consequences. However, if you are a mushroom lover like myself, then I would highly recommend getting down with these edible varieties:

Tawaka A delicious semi-firm native mushroom with a rich, earthy and slightly savoury chocolate flavour — think about a cross between shiitake and portobello.

It can be found growing on the native tawa tree but can also be grown on deciduous softwoods, such as poplar and willow.

New Zealand shiitake Shiitake are native to East Asia but a native shiitake strain that has been found in New Zealand native forest boasts the same (if not better) delicious sweet and savoury flavours, and firm, chewy texture.

Traditionally cultivated on stacks of deciduous hardwood logs, these mushrooms have also been used medicinally throughout Asia for centuries.

Pekepeke-kiore Also known as coral tooth, this native mushroom can be found growing wild on dead hardwood logs. A harder one to cultivate for the home grower, it has a very unique flavour (that has been likened to cauliflower) with the texture of crab meat.

Being closely related to the lion’s mane variety, which is widely used medicinally, it shares the same compound that has been proven helpful to improve cognitive function, memory and heal damaged nerves.

Wine cap Another one of the easier GYO (grow your own) mushrooms. They are also called garden giant as they tolerate more sun than most other mushrooms and can grow up to 30cm wide and just as tall! Mild and earthy in taste, and meaty in texture. Great to have in your garden to help build healthy soil.

Oyster An absolute beauty of a mushroom and a personal favourite both in taste and aesthetics. Popular across the globe, it’s one of the easier mushrooms to cultivate at home. Oysters can come in a range of colours, including pink, blue and yellow varieties, and are mildly chewy with a slight seafood flavour.

All of these mushrooms are currently being cultivated in the Bay of Plenty with mush success by the talented and knowledgeable folks at Mārama’s Mushrooms (see story at ourplacemagazine.co.nz).

Not only do Billy and the team grow and sell these mushrooms year round, but you can also purchase blocks to grow your own at home. You’ll find them at the local farmers’ markets, so if you’re mad about mushies, get there, have a yarn and grab yourself some locally grown fungi goodness.

Enoki Popular in Japanese, Chinese and Korean cuisine, you’ll find enoki floating in ramen bowls and hot pots. They have a firm and slightly crunchy texture, with a mild nutty, fruity flavour.

Tell us about your life in the Bay

What attracted you to a job in real estate?

I arrived here from Northern India in 2009. Coming here and learning a lot about Kiwi culture was a great experience. I like how grounded and chilled out Kiwis are.

I’m a people person and I was welcomed here with open arms — I was invited to barbecues and other get togethers… After six months, I felt like I’d been living here my whole life, it was so easy to fit in!

I married my wife Beth last year and I am about to be a dad in May — I have twins on the way,

I used to be in sales at Trustpower and people would often tell me that I’d do well in real estate as I was genuine and liked helping people. You’re dealing with emotions, with people’s life savings, so you need someone genuine to help on that journey. Also, my dad was a mortgage broker, so I learned from him.

“I’ve always liked drawing and painting, but I didn’t know anything about the art scene or galleries. I was just doing my own thing — I felt like I might have been the only artist in the world.”

“I got a lot more serious about it when I started going to shows — in Vancouver there’s a massive metal and punk scene. Just seeing all the t-shirts people were wearing, all the tattoos, the album art, that got me really interested,” he says. “Thinking back to the stuff I used to paint then, it kind of looked like tattoos.” (Rolph’s interest in tattoos continues to this day, with about 50 on his body, including some he has done himself.)

The culture surrounding the music scene was also his first introduction to folk art, and outsider art — work created by people who are self taught and sit outside the mainstream art world.

“Outsider art is sort of primitive, which I thought was so cool, as before that I thought art had to be realistic and professional looking. It was easy to do and was fun, which was the most important thing for me back then!”

Securing an exhibition at a city gallery straight out of art school is no mean feat, but that’s exactly what artist Rolph Hediger, 23, has achieved with his current Tauranga Art Gallery show, For Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. “It’s been amazing, I have been so lucky,” he says.

The show, part of an onging project for Rolph, involves subjects from all walks of life — doctors, immigrants, artists, priests, the homeless and survivors of abuse; many of whom Rolph randomly approached while out and about. “When you talk to people, they’re often not what they seem. I love listening to people’s stories and I think they can be more honest when talking to a stranger, as you might never meet again,” he says. “And even with people I knew really well, like my dad, they always share something surprising.”

However, as the project progressed, what struck Rolph was less the surprising revelations than the similar themes that continually arose: relationships, hope, hardships to overcome...

This realisation inspired a change of direction for his artwork, focusing rather on people’s similarities rather than their differences.

The start of the project involved colourful painted faces, but now Rolph turned to different materials for a different effect. “I started using ink and coffee, so everyone looks a little bit the same,” he says.” This is the first time I’ve painted with coffee — it’s so unpredictable and I have to react quite fast and work quickly.” The resulting portraits, hanging in For Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven, depict distorted faces with individual characteristics blurred away. Similarly, the accompanying interviews have been cut up, distorted and overlapped, so you’re confronted with a mass of indistinct sounds.

Looking forward Right now, Rolph’s bedroom/studio is brimming with paintings of colourful blooms with solid black backgrounds, they sit alongside other works in progress that are very different, but also feature that dark asethetic. Outside his painting, he’s stoking his creative fires by collaborating with fellow artists at The Good Sheet Collective at Tauranga’s Incubator Creative Hub, as well as studying again — this time, law at Waikato University, with an eye to working within the arts.

Rolph credits the Bachelor of Creative Industries at Toi Ohomai for opening him up to a world of possibilities. ”I was introduced to the arts scene and how things work. I’m a lot more confident now; I’m always thinking about how I can talk about things, how I can tie things into a series, and my art has a lot more depth to it. I’ve also met amazing people and lifelong friends.” Ⓟ

Musical inspiration Rolph was born in Capetown, South Africa, and moved to Vancouver when he was eight years old.

He arrived in New Zealand three years ago, with his parents, brother and sister.

Davey Bishop, aka the musician Davey Beige, has made a life in music — as a student, teacher and an accomplished artist with more than 30 years experience. His new EP, Rise Above, is out in May. 53

You may have heard of Davey Beige. He’s the singer-songwriter who plays folk, blues, rock and electro-rock, the performer who often appears at both solo and collaborative gigs around the Bay. In May, Davey Beige will release Rise Above, an EP that shares its name with the single and video released via multiple platforms in February this year.

But, have you met David Bishop?

David is a music tutor at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology who last year completed his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), faculty research coordinator, father, husband and friend to many. I’m lucky enough to know both Davey and David, but I call him Dave…

Dave has over thirty years of professional experience as a guitarist, songwriter, singer, teacher, event manager, columnist and performer, and several solo albums released under his performance name, Davey Beige. To say he brings a wealth of experience, talent and knowledge to his teaching role at the polytech is an understatement and — pun intended — he’s an unsung hero. Having a ‘real live’ musician as your tutor is an inspiration and Dave modestly admits to being a shaper of the musical careers of others. He has rolled with some big names during his own career too. But it’s not easy to extract too much information on this.

“In a very humble way, I can name students that I have had the pleasure to assist and teach.

Really it’s all from them…. not me, so it feels a bit weird. I hope these people don’t mind me mentioning them but from Auckland days teaching at the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand (MAINZ), I could say someone like musician and bassist Marika Hodgson, and in the music industry, Savina Kim [now Fountain]. Here at Toi Ohomai, I could mention musicians Matty Buxton and Josh Pow.” Most musicians can credit an experience or an artist to shaping their careers, or in fact inspiring a career in music, and Dave has his own story to tell.

“I grew up just outside Rotorua in a semi-rural environment. I was attracted to music very early on and started repeat listening records at home on our three-in-one stereo. These records were left behind by Mum and Dad’s friends after parties. ‘Glam’ was big at the time so David Bowie and Suzi Quatro were on high rotate. I have vivid memories of my father getting the guitar out and everyone singing along. Man, it was good! Something clicked, I thought that looks like a cool thing to do, wonder if I could do it too?

“I then started hunting and finding out about new music as much as my young 1970’s curious mind could. There was local radio, which I loved, but I didn’t know anyone else who was into music as much as me. I was on the farm, had no older siblings to steal records from. When I was about 12, I was at the local gas station and by chance happened to buy a cassette of this guy called John Lee Hooker. Didn’t

know who he was or where he was from, but that earthy, strange, powerful, urgent music took over.

I didn’t know it at the time, but I was listening to the blues! I started to play guitar and very early on taught myself the blues forms… so I guess you could say blues music and guitar really makes me tick. Over forty years on, I still love playing the blues”.

Dave went on to teach private guitar students in the mid-nineties as an extra form of income to bolster the money that he made from playing in the band he formed with friends, The Peter Stuyvesant Hitlist. Based in Auckland, they played corporate parties, concerts, various venues and cafes; K’Road was a regular haunt.

It’s here I turn to the beige side of the story, the Davey Beige one — why beige? “Part of the entertainment approach for us as a band was to dress up in 70s threads. For some reason, every time I walked into an op-shop to find a new (old) suit for the next gig, the colour was beige! At this time I had a particular penchant for safari suits — this linked back to the 70s and Māori show-bands my grandfather used to listen to,” says Dave. “All our band members had organically created stage names,” he laughs. “At an early show our lead singer, the one and only Peter Stuyvesant himself, turned to me as I was about to take another guitar solo and said, ‘Here’s Davey Beige!’ And it stuck.

“About ten years later, when I released my first solo album Fold in Two, it just felt natural to stay with the handle. I tell students these days that you have to be a very brave and powerful artist to embrace Beige as a stage name.”

After a stint overseas with his wife Shelley, Dave took on a full-time music and events management teaching role at MAINZ, and continued to develop as a singer-songwriter in his spare time — the roles overlapped seamlessly. Whilst teaching in this role, Dave decided to extend his artistic development through study, a decision that coincided with him attending yearly songwriting seminar weekends hosted by Berkeley University’s Professor Pat Pattison. This meeting led to Pat becoming Dave’s Master’s supervisor and he completed this qualification (Master of Arts, Music) in 2014. “Pat has inspired many songwriters and musicians, and I feel lucky enough to have been at the right place at the right time to not only simply meet him, but also to learn from him.”

After gaining his masters qualification, Dave, Shelley and their two sons moved to the Bay of Plenty. This enabled Dave to take up a similar role (to his one at MAINZ) at the then-named Bay of Plenty Polytechnic.

The next step on the academic ladder saw him enrol at Brisbane’s Griffith University to study parttime towards his Doctor of Musical Arts (Composition) 54

form,” Dave says. “I hope to inspire my students and fellow musicians, and ultimately to entertain them as I perform the songs I’ve written, live.”

Back to that EP release. Rise Above is all about taking stock in life and realising that the best way to deal with personal issues is to open up to the healing and redemptive power of love. Dave was thrilled to team up with Hamilton film and comic maker Aaron Christiansen who created the very cool stop-motion video that accompanies the EP. “We’ve been friends for ten years now and when it came time to hopefully produce a video for Rise Above, I contacted him and sent the song.

Immediately he started creating the storyboards for a possible video. At this point I was blown away, because… it just worked so well with the song.”

So that’s the Dave I know — David Bishop, Davey Beige – a man of many talents and many shades of beige.

— a huge undertaking for anyone, let alone a full-time tutor, part-time musician with a growing family. But as we know, fortune favours the brave and Dave certainly rose above the life challenges he encountered throughout this period of study.

His research topic investigated how the principle of ‘prosody’ can be used in contemporary songwriting. “At a macro level, prosody can be defined to mean unity and is used to ensure music supports the lyrical intent of a song and vice-versa,” says Dave. His main research question combined a variety of definitions for the term prosody, and asked how these definitions can be applied across songwriting elements including melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics and performance.

The mainly artistic research aimed to clarify how prosody can be used in the process of songwriting as well as the critique of songs in general, and drew on his personal songwriting approach. All the research Dave did prior to embarking on his DMA involved sharing with his students, and this study was no different. “It’s allowed me to highlight to them that songwriting is a fun and important educational topic, and an inspiring art

A welcoming space Two years since it started, we know the pandemic has had a profound impact on the way we work and live. While these changes included many losses, frustrations and inconveniences, it also encouraged innovation in most industries, and dentistry was no different.

“It’s certainly been a crazy time setting up a practice during Covid,” says Lloyd. “From ordering four dental chairs in July and only receiving two in time to open in February to opening during the Omicron outbreak! The interior design has been thoughtfully curated by Karen Kelly Interior Design. Karen and Rachel knew each other from university and when they first discussed this project, Karen instantly understood Rachel’s vision for the clinic’s style and feel. Rachel and Lloyd are thrilled with the result, as are the visitors to the practice, judging by the many compliments they’ve received on the colour palette and interior choices.

New directions After many years building their careers, working in hospitals, and private and community clinics in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, this was the perfect time for the pair to take an entrepreneurial step. “I’ve always been interested in orthodontics,” says Rachel, who completed her orthodontic specialisation after 17 years working as a dentist. “My own orthodontic experience as a teenager was so positive — I feel honoured to create gorgeous smiles and help others in the same way!”

Following Rachel’s postgraduate study, they decided to return to the Bay of Plenty to be closer to family and friends, as well as giving their three boys Max (12), Rufus (10) and Sebastian (8) the opportunity to make the same childhood memories they had spending holidays in the Bay. “The kids are a bit older and while they’re still very busy, active boys, it’s a lot easier,” says Rachel, about the opening of their practice.

Traditionally dentistry isn’t a very sustainable industry, but the Farrars have made this a priority and try to be as responsible as possible. “Ideally we would do a lot more for the environment, and we acknowledge that there can be

a lot of waste in our industry,” says Lloyd. “But we are starting to see more reusable and biodegradable products, and have joined the TerraCycle recycling programme [see box, left]. Every bit counts.”

Feeling at ease Lloyd has the same philosophy when it comes to dental care — every bit counts. “Small but good habits really make a big difference towards overall health and wellbeing,” he says.

“We’re doing dental differently,” says Lloyd. “We want our patients to walk out feeling empowered to make preventative choices to ensure their long-term health.” Lloyd is also well experienced in intravenous sedation, which can help people get through some more involved treatments, such as wisdom tooth surgery or dental implants.

Essentially, people have a bit of a snooze and when they come to, the dentistry is done.

It’s this low-stress environment, created through 61

a perfect symbiosis of clever design, community input, the latest technology and lots of heart, that makes all the difference. “The focus is on making our patients feel as comfortable, welcome and informed as possible,” says Lloyd.

“I’m not interested in bombarding patients with technical terms. I’m interested in showing them exactly what is happening in their mouth and presenting their options in a relaxed manner, allowing them to ask questions and make the right decision for their health. I want to provide a space where patients and their families feel at ease, as if they’re visiting a friend who happens to be able to help them fix their teeth.”

His piece titled Ka Mua Ka Muri, a well-known whakataukī meaning ‘to walk backwards into the future’, draws on customary Māori art forms presented with a modern-day aesthetic inspired by NFT designs.

Kereama has exhibited works across Aotearoa and abroad, and is looking forward to being involved in a project in his own backyard. “After Dark is such a great opportunity for local artists to get their work out there and show their own community their work. It’s not often that an exciting opportunity of this scale and magnitude comes along, and I can’t wait for the people of Tauranga to see the creative geniuses they have in their midst.”

After Dark Urban Light Festival aims to revitalise commercial spaces, civic venues and public areas around Tauranga’s CBD — you’ll see mundane sites and structures transform into inspiring illuminated artworks that are bound to entertain and transfix your whole whānau.

Walk around Tauranga’s city centre by day this May and you might not notice much of a change. Explore the city after sunset, however, and you’ll see it in a new light as it morphs into a tapestry of creativity and innovation. The new After Dark Urban Light Festival will see empty buildings, dreary walls and dark alleyways play host to some of Aotearoa’s best displays of light art, projection mapping and installations.

The festival will take place in the CBD across 10 days, from Friday 13 May until Sunday 22 May, turning on an event to fire the imagination. Project Manager Luke Schroder of Knock Knock Events, which is producing the festival, is enjoying playing his part in bringing After Dark to life after a reduced event season. “After a dark few months full of event uncertainty and cancellations, it’s so exciting to be able to bring such a fun festival experience to Tauranga to help us all lighten up!”

A self-guided experience, After Dark acts as both a glowing wonderland for the public to enjoy, and a creative laboratory in which a diverse range of visual artists and creative technicians can push the bounds of public art and innovation.

You’ll be able to explore the art trail’s range of colourful, abstract and sometimes interactive works that come alive every night from sunset.

Off the Wall The sport of speed climbing is now an Olympic sport and consequently, numbers of Kiwi climbers is surging. And guess where the country’s only Olympic-sized speed climbing wall is located? Right here in the Bay. 76

For most people, their knowledge of climbing is limited to people hanging off ropes, chaotic birthday parties at the local climbing centre or Tom Cruise hanging off a cliff in Mission Impossible 2. But in 2020, social media was hit with a new type of climbing, when the men’s qualifying rounds of the Tokyo Olympics revealed the thrilling, adrenalinepacked sport of climbing.

A combination of speed climbing, bouldering and lead climbing, the sport’s Olympic debut was years in the making and, despite significant controversy around merging the three wildly different disciplines, it was a big win for the sport climbing world.

Following the successful debut, the disciplines have been separated into two competitions for the 2024 Paris Games, with speed climbing being classified as its own separate event.

It also meant Kiwi athletes finally got access to a full-sized speed climbing wall, with a TECT grant of $73,739 enabling BOPSCA to build a full spec, 15.7m high wall, angled at 5 degrees overhang, right here at Blake Park in Mt Maunganui. Built in time for the Climbing NZ Open Combined Event, it’s the only Olympic speed climbing wall in the country.

This excellent new facility set the scene for a high-performance speed climbing programme, with renowned coach, climber and all-around outdoor sport enthusiast Rob Moore taking the lead. The Tauranga local is currently the speed climbing coach for the New Zealand Team and says the speed wall has enabled our athletes to (literally) reach new heights.

For the 2024 Paris Olympics, Rob says they are realistic but hopeful: “We’ve been lucky enough to receive funding from High Performance Sport New Zealand for the first time, and the goal will be to win the Oceania champs to qualify for the Olympics. We’ll aim for a top 16 spot in Paris, then we’ll go further from there.”

Rob’s strategic approach to training is to learn from and collaborate with the best. “The French and Polish climbers are really good. One of the coaches we work with regularly is Ola Rudinska from Poland, who broke the world record at the Olympics in Tokyo. She trains with us by analysing videos of the climbers, identifying each athlete’s strength and potential, and advising on the best ‘route beta’ for each of them,” explains Rob. In climbing, ‘beta’ refers to the basic information on each climber’s moves, sequence or holds. Beta can be entirely different for different body shapes, reach and climbing style. Using different beta is common but some routes are very beta specific. “The Olympic speed route is

Gunning for the young While Rob and BOPSCA have made significant strides in raising awareness and creating buzz around the sport, Rob is determined to go even further. Having spent a large part of his career getting kids excited to try climbing and test their limits, he hopes the sport’s popularity will see it included as an option at school. “That’s definitely my vision for the future, to have speed climbing in schools. It’s the only version of our sport that is objective and measurable. The belays are automatic and the routes are easy to climb. It teaches kids to measure progress, use their body and mind simultaneously, and it’s great fun,” he says.

Cooler weather is afoot and the idea of eating a restaurant-quality dinner without taking your uggs off sounds appealing. We test drive the first of Solera wine bar’s new winter take-home boxes.

Solera wine bar opened in Mt Maunganui early last year, filling the gap for a venue that doubles as a grown-up restaurant and late-night wine bar. Top-notch eats have been flowing from its open fire ever since, so we were keen to check out the first of its take-home dinner packs that will be on offer until the end of September 2022.

The packs offer classy restaurant food that you wouldn’t make at home, and let’s be real, you probably couldn’t make at home... unless you’re a chef like Pepper & Me’s Cherie Metcalfe, the brains behind our favourite sauces, salts and rubs. We invited Cherie to check out Solera’s May pack with us, which promised three sharing dishes in less than 30 minutes in the kitchen.

We unpack the box — all the food is cooked and vac-packed, with various sauces and dressing in separate containers, so essentially it’s a reheating and plating exercise. So far, so good. However, you do need to have a good read of the instructions before you start, as you’re working across three dishes simultaneously, so attention must be paid!

There’s a snack to kick things off — little pieces of deep-fried seaweed and rice wrappers that we top with eggplant, tomato and pinenut salsa. Tastes of the sea. Very crisp. Super. After simmering vac-packs, reheating in the oven, and adding sauces and sides to the 80

dishes, Cherie garnishes like a pro with herbs from her garden, and we’re ready to sample. And yes, all within about 30 minutes.

There’s a sweet, warm milk bun spread with miso cultured butter — what’s not to love? The meat from the rich chilli plum-glazed duck leg pulls easily away from the bone — smoked and pickled bok choi and shiitake a welcome sharp counterpoint on the side. The charcoal-baked cabbage has plenty of crunch and was enlivened by a lime dressing, chickpea puree and a scattering of smoked pinenuts. And the short rib is bathed in a delicious bourbon jus, and paired with a silky smooth kūmara puree and a dollop of pungently delicious black garlic ketchup.

A look at Solera’s upcoming monthly menus reveals dishes such as roasted artichoke with eggplant puree, kimchi dressing and miso mayo; shrimp glazed pork ribs with pickled swede and galangal; and confit beef cheek with potato, beets and sherry sauce. Winter nights are looking up!

Dinner is when Picnicka will really come into its own. The concept’s centerpiece is the Argentinian woodfired barbecue, which will turn out chargrilled hits such as cuts of dry-aged beef to share, spiced lamb belly skewers and a range of house-made sausages sold by the inch. Seafood also gets its turn on the open fire in a dish of fire-roasted market fish, macadamia, fennel and citrus.

Another cornerstone of Picnicka is the raw bar, where oysters are presented many ways, think manuka smoked oysters paired with roasted paua XO sauce, and the old classic, Bloody Mary shots.

The kaimoana-strong menu also stars Cloudy Bay clams, and standout crayfish sourced sustainability from Wairarapa’s Tora Collective (tails are cooked on the grill or the crayfish is nestled in a milk bun with lettuce, chipotle mayo, pickled onion and apple).

“The menu, like New Zealand itself, is a real melting pot,” says Noel. There are dishes that draw inspiration from Greece, Spain, Italy and across Asia, but the overarching aim for Picnicka is “being as sustainable and local as possible,” he explains.

“We really want to nail that.”

Tauranga CBD is set for an injection of much-needed action with openings at Thirty Eight Elizabeth. Buzz is building around the residential, dining and retail development (site of the new Farmer’s flagship store), where the much-anticipated restaurant Picnicka is about to welcome crowds.

“We saw that Elizabeth Towers would create a new centre of town. In Europe, that centre would be a marketplace, a kind of cultural hub — we thought Picnicka could be that place for Tauranga,” says owner, Noel Cimadom. This vision of a central meeting place also guided Noel and Kim Smythe, his wife and business partner, to the name. “We were thinking — Picnicka is in lieu of a central market, and is the place where we would pick up things we’d like to take on a picnic or bring to a barbecue; the kind of food we could graze on,” explains Noel.

“Picnicka needs to be versatile, given where it is,” says Noel. “The crowd will differ throughout the day, from shoppers and corporate lunches to families and groups of friends.” Kicking things off in the early hours will be freshly baked pastries, excellent coffee and a menu for the brunch crowd. Casual lunches are on offer along with after-work cocktails and snacks, or just a drink after the movies (located across the road).

Noel and Kim’s clever approach to restaurant design is obvious with Clarence and Alpino, and Picnicka promises to be just as exciting. “We’ve used unpolished products throughout — the charred cedar, stone, brick and tiles are all raw,” says Noel.

“We really wanted to bring an organic feel to the

space and develop real character in something that was essentially a white shell.” The room features rustic handcrafted furniture and arched north-facing windows that give the room a loft-type feel.
