Everyone loves an inspiring ‘follow your dreams, do what you love, land on your feet’ kind of story. So, we have one for you...

Isaac Weston worked as a chef, then a travel agent for many years, but after people clapped eyes on the fence he made with copper-clad railway sleepers, he was set on a path to being a full-time artist (page 33). He now uses copper to create wall art, garden sculptures and jewellery. We visit his Matua property, where his beautifully landscaped garden doubles as the perfect gallery for his art, and his workplace.

The Tauranga Heritage Collection, which has more than 30,000 objects and taonga of Tauranga Moana, has once again let us share some of its treasures (71). This time it’s in the form of 1960s photos that depict life in Te Moana-a-Toi Bay of Plenty (including our engaging cover shot of Māori performers from Ōpōtiki).

In Grow Together (81), Home Farm continues its planting advice — this time focusing on fruit trees; Katie Davies, a Mount-based naturopath and medical herbalist, talks about boosting your immune system (44), and Fife Lane shares cocktail recipes you’ll want to make all summer.

What’s Up Skin Deep New local brand Mr Weekender is all about skincare for the outdoorsy guy that wants to ward away weather-beaten skin and premature ageing.

Man About Town The C-word has caused a truckload of event cancellations, but Father Christmas sure as heck isn’t cancelled, so we’ve tracked him down at a couple of free local events. First up, Christmas in the Park is on the weekend of 11–12 December at Coronation Park, as part of The Little Big Markets. There’ll be a Santa’s Grotto (by Zespri) with free photos to take home, free Fun Football, live music and the usual market fun.

In Tauranga, check out the giant gingerbread house in Red Square. Santa will be on the porch on 4, 11 and 18 December.

The Action Downtown Tauranga’s Avenue Pizza has long been serving up its huge, sublime pizzas, and finally Mount folk can get a slice of the action. Avenue Squared is now in the space briefly occupied by Takeaway Pizza, with pizzas such as pepperoni, roast mushroom and meatball, and sides of fried chicken with pickles, and garlic bread. The bar showcases brews from The Island Brewery, along with usual bar offerings.

Globe Trotting Goodness OPT’s latest food offerings include tantalising South Indian fare and chicken nibbles with some of Asia’s favourite flavours — perfect with a cold one from High Tide.

Two new food options have landed at OPT. Chef Lakshmi Chandrasekaran hails from Chennai in South India and has worked for hotels, cruise ships and restaurants here and abroad, before launching Food Point in 2019. Food Point specialises in “gourmet dosa” (pictured right), a method of crepe preparation made from stone-ground lentil and rice (so it’s gluten free), typical of the southern part of India. Fillings include vegan masala, tandoori chicken masala or lamb masala, all served with coconut ginger chutney and lentil dip.

In a neighbouring container, Goongfood has cherry picked some of Asia’s most revered flavours and paired them up with delicious chicken nibbles. We’re talking chicken dressed up with Japanese teriyaki, Chinese hoisin, Korean sweet soy, Vietnamese lemongrass or Thai Sriracha.

Artist Isaac Weston is the talent behind the lustrous copper artworks of Re.Work.It. We visit his Matua property to see his gallery, the art in his lush garden and the ‘Hobbit Hole’ workshop.

The irony is not lost on me that Isaac has a coppery hue himself, sporting a vibrant beard that he rubs intermittently through our chat about how he came to be a copper patina artist. It’s not uncommon for this metal to be used for everyday items — joinery, planters, electrical wiring, pots and so forth. What’s interesting in this tale is how Isaac came to work with this medium.

He started his workdays as a chef, making culinary waves in top-end London restaurants, creating and exploring various foods and flavours, including impressing the Notting Hill set who flocked to renowned Southwestern American eatery, Dakota.

Isaac met Lara during this period; she was working in restaurant management. They decided to venture forth and investigate life in Majorca, but the green hills of home soon called and the couple returned to New Zealand, setting up home in Tauranga.

Isaac then spent 16 years in the travel industry, loving the interaction with a range of people and the excitement of seeing customers off on wonderful adventures. However, five and a half years ago, when Lara followed her passion and set up the indoor house-plant business, Cool Plants, Isaac was inspired to make a change and do what until this point had been a hobby — creating by reworking materials at hand.

There’s nothing like viewing a piece of wall art in situ.

It allows you to visualise it in your own space, you can appreciate it from different angles, in various lights and shadows. Being able to see garden art in this way is also helpful — you can understand the physical size, the actual depth of colour and perspective of form.

Both of these experiences are on offer when you visit the gallery of Re.Work.It in Matua, home to copper artist Isaac Weston, his wife, indoor plant specialist Lara Bui, and their cats Carlos and Honey.

The property is the ideal showcase for Isaac’s unique copper patina artworks, which are set amidst the extensive garden that Lara maintains. Bespoke landscaping has been designed to optimise their display in the best light — and shade. Various cleverly composed elevations, decks and garden paths meander down to the Matua estuary below, which provides an idyllic and ever-changing outlook to the statuesque sculptural columns, copper forms and al fresco wall art. Oversized outdoor mirrors reflect even greater depth to the lush planting that tumbles between levels, creating a waterfall of flora and fauna. “The environment certainly promotes creativity,” Isaac muses, standing on the lower-level work platform, once a deck from which to sit and enjoy the view, now a place to do the “heavy, dusty, bashing part of the process”, while enjoying the view.

from Breaking Bad. Luckily Isaac knows the show well, and agrees there have been some explosive moments. “I was experimenting with various ingredients, working towards what have now become my signature colours, and boom!, a cloud of chemicals wafted from the container they were in. I literally dropped to the floor and crawled outside, beneath the chemical cloud — lucky escape. A bit more research went into what not to mix,” Isaac laughs.

Isaac sources the copper for his wall art and garden columns from defunct low-pressure hot-water cylinders (“I have ‘ins’ with a network of local plumbers”), and sheets that arrive from a copper supplier. Railway sleepers for the columns arrive in lots of 100 from Waikato railyards. Re-purposing the copper from inside the cylinders is a messy and very physical part of the creative process, one Isaac tackles on that beautiful lower work-platform.

Isaac’s first pieces were copper and railway sleeper garden columns for their own property, which were seen and loved by family members. Purchasers soon arrived via word-of-mouth and Isaac began to spend more time making them for people, eventually experimenting with wall art. He pondered the move to turning this passion into a business. “I have a sales background, so the ethos of establishing businesses with functioning business models that would both support and fulfill us, was a priority. We both feel very lucky and blessed that this is what has happened, and we’re both able to do what we love, and live well.”

The sales background is definitely a bonus — but what about that penchant for mixing and creating? When Isaac shows me the “Hobbit Hole” — the space under the couple’s home where he mixes various concoctions that create the distinctive patina on his artworks — I have to draw the comparison with science-teacher-turned-meth-cook, Walter White 83

The next step is to cut and shape plywood to back the copper, and the materials are glued, clamped and riveted in the Hobbit Hole. Once dried, it’s back to the work platform and that estuary vista to polish the copper and perform the ‘acid attack’, where a concoction of various ingredients is applied until the desired blues and greens and other coppery hues are reached. Once the patina has been achieved, and Isaac is happy with the results, a varnish is applied to ‘hold’ the ageing process, the pieces handled in gloved hands as they quickly absorb the natural body oils that can easily imprint permanently. Each of his artworks takes around six to eight weeks to create.

The Little Big Markets, the vibrant, bustling markets an ideal showcase for both his and Lara’s businesses. “Within a year I became too busy to attend regularly and keep up with creating the orders, supplying various galleries and filling the commissions.”

The annual Bay of Plenty Garden & Art Festival also provided an ideal backdrop for Isaac’s artworks, and their own Matua property has now become a location on the garden trail of the hugely popular event, testament to Lara’s green fingers and Isaac’s hard-landscaping skills. “Our property is the ideal gallery for Re.Work.It and my horticulture work, says Lara. “The opportunity to put your hands in soil, touch base with Mother Nature and really, truly love what you do is wonderful,” Lara says.

While Isaac’s artworks are being purchased for homes and gardens around New Zealand, others are able to appreciate his creations in their own homes, without purchasing them. For watchers of The Block NZ, you will have seen Team Purple displaying an oversize circular copper work. “One of the team is a Pāpāmoa local and she was choosing items from Cool Plants to stage the home, and saw my work, loved it, and bought a piece to hang in The Block house.”

Isaac’s work also extends beyond wall art and garden columns. He fashions insects and aeroplanes, planter pots and various containers from copper, which can be viewed in his sheltered gallery and garden. There was also a fabulously fun series springing from the beloved Star Wars character R2-D2, one of which is used by its new owner to shelter a stereo system adjacent to an outdoor spa.

— wooden sticks with copper tips. Isaac gifted a box of them to children’s television presenter Suzy Cato, who shared them with delighted recipients at Auckland’s Starship Hospital. Magic indeed. There’s also an extensive range of earrings available, and yes, you guessed it, Prime Minister Jacinda Adern has her very own pair, which she wore on an official visit to Papatoetoe, and on her appearance in the documentary, Patrick Gower: On Hate.

It’s clear that work for Isaac and Lara is in fact their combined passions. They’re ideal examples of people who have chosen to be brave enough to take a leap of faith and have landed firmly on their feet.

We talk to Mount local Katie Davies about herbalism and naturopathy, tips to boost your immune system, and her new brand The Well, a range of herbal tinctures and organic teas.

Katie Davies has seen first hand how chronic stress, poor diet and environmental toxins take a toll on people’s health. The Mount-based medical herbalist and naturopath has observed the knock-on effects in her clients, with a rise in anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, low mood, inflammation, digestive issues, liver overload and immune dysfunction.

In response to this, Katie has launched The Well, a new brand of herbal tinctures (liquid drops) and organic teas that aim to address these ever-growing conditions.

On the following pages, Katie shares insights into naturopathy and herbalism, and offers immuneboosting advice, including a delicious smoothie recipe.

What can people expect when they visit a naturopath?

Tell us about tinctures versus teas Tinctures are liquid herbal extracts that are readily absorbed and convenient to take. They offer the flexibility to increase a dose when treating acute conditions (such as a cold or sore throat), or use a slightly lower dose for weeks or months when supporting something like chronic stress. This is also ideal when prescribing low doses for children.

For some, the main disadvantage is the taste — they are best diluted in a small amount of water or juice.

Therapeutic teas are more gentle than tinctures and are a good option for long-term support of a condition, such as nourishing the nervous system or liver. And as they are more affordable, they are more accessible for many people.

I blend five tinctures for The Well, using quality liquid herbal extracts — they’re designed to nourish the adrenal glands, support digestion and liver function, enhance sleep, boost immune function, and assist with stress and anxiety. I formulate and hand-blend the five loose-leaf tea in small batches, and they contain certified organic herbs and no artificial flavour, colour or preservatives. There’s a brew perfect for the afternoon slump, and blends that support stress and sleep, immune function, digestion and detoxification.

The products are packaged sustainably too.

Naturopaths take a holistic view of the person when trying to address health issues, from your diet to your emotional and spiritual wellbeing. They take a mind-body approach to healing people.

Mostly when people get to my clinic, they’re suffering from a chronic condition, so the first appointment would take about 90 minutes and involve an in-depth look at their health and lifestyle.

We would discuss things such as diet, food sensitivities, hormone imbalance and digestive health; I might also order diagnostic tests. All of that would enable me to tailor an individual plan, which may include lifestyle and dietary changes, vitamin and mineral supplements and, as I’m also a herbalist, supporting herbal remedies.

What is a medical herbalist?

It’s someone trained to practice and prescribe herbal medicine, which uses plant extracts to support the treatment of a wide range of conditions. Medicinal plants contain nutrients and phytochemicals that effectively rebalance and strengthen human physiology. A herbalist will work closely with you to alleviate your symptoms, as well as correct underlying imbalances.

To become a herbalist, I completed a threeyear Bachelor of Natural Medicine at South Pacific College of Natural Medicine in Auckland, which included studying medical sciences, such as anatomy, pharmacology and clinical diagnosis.

Supporting Your Immune System A healthy functioning immune system is vital for overall health and wellbeing, and protects us against the many pathogens we face daily. A range of factors can contribute to immune system issues, including increased gut problems, food intolerance, underlying microbial infection, an inflammatory diet, high sugar intake, chronic stress, nutritional deficiency or toxic overload. Here, Katie shares some ways to best support your immune system.

Other healthy fats are avocado, extra virgin olive oil, and omega-3 found in salmon, sardines, mackerel and anchovies.

1. Supplements* Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased susceptibility to infection, disease and immunerelated disorders. Sunlight on our skin is a good source, and it’s also found in cod liver oil, tinned salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel. Take 1000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily for immune support.

4. Food to avoid Sugar Reduce sugar and refined carbohydrates (white bread, white rice, pastries, many breakfast cereals, pasta). Sugar suppresses the immune system, and many pathogens such as fungus and candida thrive on sugar, leading to an overabundance in the body.

Zinc is a vital immune supporting nutrient. Great food sources include pumpkin seeds, seafood, oysters and beef. Take 15–30mg daily with meals for additional immune support (for those 12 years+, as younger children would have a lower dose).

Caffeine Keep coffee to one cup a day as it can stimulate the production of stress hormones and contribute to blood glucose dysregulation. Replace with tea such as lemon balm, rosehip or dandelion root, or lemon-infused water.

Vitamin C supports the immune response and is beneficial for the prevention and treatment of infections. Good food sources include kiwifruit, strawberries, rosehips, pineapple, blackcurrants and kumara. Take 500–1000mg daily with meals.

Alcohol Try to avoid alcohol during the week as it’s inflammatory to the gut and increases the burden on the liver.

Essential fatty acids, such as those found in Arctic cod liver oil, support immune function and inflammation (and also contain vitamins A and D for added immune protection). Also found in salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, flaxseeds, chia seeds and walnuts.

Highly processed food Avoid artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

Unhealthy fats These are found in deep-fried foods and margarine.

Herbs that can support immune function include elderberry, astragalus, andrographis and echinacea.

Get outdoors and spend time in nature — it’s calming and beneficial for overall health and wellbeing.

3. Food to fuel

Connect regularly with friends and loved ones to support mental health and immune function.

Immune-boosting morning smoothie Blend together 1 cup frozen berries and/or mango/kiwifruit, 1 banana, ¼ cup pumpkin seeds, ¼ avocado, handful of spinach and ½-1 cup water.

Hydrate with at least eight glasses of filtered water daily. Herbal teas are also a great way to hydrate.

Antioxidant-rich foods Colourful fruits and vegetables. Enjoy a cup of fresh fruit and at least four cups of fresh vegetables daily. Green tea is also a good source of antioxidants.

Move your body. Enjoy at least 30–45 minutes of moderate activity daily.

Get to bed before 10pm and get eight hours sleep to rest and restore. Listening to a meditation app before bed can help to unwind.

Fresh herbs & spices Garlic, ginger, turmeric, parsley, thyme, sage, rosemary and oregano are beneficial.

Practice yoga or meditation — both are very restorative. Also, two minutes of deep belly breathing can help to nourish the nervous system when you’re feeling stressed.

Wholefoods Eat fresh wholefoods that are as close to their natural state as possible.

High-quality protein in each meal Good sources include fish, free-range chicken and eggs, lean red meat, lentils, chickpeas, beans, nuts, seeds, quinoa and tofu. Also include a handful of raw nuts and seeds daily (almonds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, hemp and flaxseeds).

Fife Lane bar manager Scott Hinton shares some superlative summer cocktails that look and taste very profesh, but are eminently achievable for the backyard barman.

Party season is go! And while a classic G&T or glass of chilled rosé is lovely, offering your guests an impressive cocktail (that’s simple to make) just seems a lot more fun.

As longtime fans of Fife Lane’s drinks list, we thought we’d ask bar manager Scott Hinton to part with the recipes for some of our favourite drinks.

The coconut chilli margarita is Fife Lane’s most popular cocktail, and now you have the recipe — you’re welcome! We’ve included the Little Biddy cocktail from the restaurant’s much-loved menu of Gin Sips. “We use Little Biddy because it’s a New

Zealand product and we need to support local more than ever right now,” says Scott. “It also has some interesting native botanicals, such as horopito and tarata [lemonwood].”

We’ve also thrown in a sexy Champagne cocktail for the silly season, and a fruity passionfruit caprioska that’s just perfect for summer.

And if you’re the type that fancies a dessert cocktail, more than an actual dessert, you’ll have to get to Fife Lane soon to try its new list, which includes drinks inspired by Pineapple Lumps and orange choc chip ice cream.

Passionfruit Caprioska

Chill a rocks glass (a short tumbler) with ice. Add the following ingredients to a Boston shaker: 30ml Stolichnaya Vodka, 30ml passionfruit liqueur (we use De Kuyper, Passoã is an alternative), 30ml passionfruit pulp* and ½ fresh lime, cut into small chunks. Fill shaker with ice and shake vigorously until well combined. Discard ice from chilled glass, then pour in contents of shaker. Garnish with a dehydrated lime wheel and stainless-steel cocktail straw. Makes 1. *Note We use Tasti Passionfruit pulp and blend it so it doesn’t have whole seeds. You can also use fresh passionfruit when it’s in season, but you’ll need to add some sugar syrup to balance out the taste.

Coconut Chilli Margarita

For the chilli salt rim, combine 5g chilli flakes and 40g iodised table salt in a blender. We use a margarita glass rim tool, but at home you can use 2 side plates: pour 15ml lime juice on one plate and the chilli salt mixture on the other. Place rim of each glass into the juice, then into the chilli salt. Set aside. Chill desired glass with ice (we use a martini glass but you can use a coupe or even a rocks glass). Add 15ml De Kuyper Triple Sec Liqueur (substitute Cointreau), 45ml 1800 Coconut Tequila, 30ml lime juice and 15ml sugar syrup to a Boston shaker, fill shaker with ice and shake for 15 seconds (the longer you shake, the colder it gets). Discard ice from chilled glass and strain contents from the shaker into the glass. Serve with or without ice. Garnish with sliced fresh lime. Makes 1.

Chill preferred glass with ice (we use a Champagne flute or coupe). Add the following ingredients to a Boston shaker without ice: 30ml Stolichnaya Vodka, 30ml Beefeater London Dry Gin (or use your favourite gin, but note that any flavoured gin will change the taste), 30ml lemon juice, 30ml sugar syrup (or to taste) and ½ eggwhite (optional*). Shake to emulsify the eggwhite slightly (if using), then add ice and shake vigorously until combined.

Strain into a chilled glass and top with Champagne or sparkling wine (about 60ml) — we use G.H. Mumm Grand Cordon Champagne. Garnish with a slice of dehydrated citrus or fresh lemon. Makes 1. *Note The optional eggwhite creates a foam and is purely for presentation.

Little Biddy Gin Sip

Garnish Like a Pro Dehydrated fruit looks downright classy as a cocktail garnish, and it’s simple to make, even if you don’t have a dehydrator.

Scott says: “You can use most citrus, but at Fife Lane we find limes work best and are the most versatile.

Just slice your citrus to the desired thickness and place onto an oven tray lined with baking paper. Bake in the oven at about 75°C for about 1 hour (depending on thickness), turning once, until the fruit is light brown on both sides.

Add the following ingredients to your selected glass (we use a wine glass but a gin balloon or highball are also good options): 45ml Little Biddy Gin, 6 dried juniper berries (from supermarkets), 1 slice orange and 3 sprigs fresh coriander. Fill with ice, then pour in East Imperial Royal Botanic Tonic (substitute Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic) and stir. Garnish with a dehydrated or fresh orange slice and stainless-steel straw. Makes 1.

Design company Made of Tomorrow has created a sharp new Tauranga HQ that doubles as an inspiring studio space and perfect showcase for its much-loved diaries, sleek metal shelving and more.

haha. But there are so many people doing cool things and it’s not too flashy or pretentious, everyone’s really open and encouraging.”

Not long after the move south, however, the global pandemic hit and New Zealand went into its first level 4 lockdown. “Everything went on hold and we weren’t working, we didn’t really know what to do,” admits Matt. “After that lockdown we sort of came back and had a whole fresh stance and view for Made of Tomorrow. It actually gave us some time to set up here, since all of our stuff was still getting manufactured in Auckland and we’d been struggling with moving manufacturing down here in the midst of a pandemic.”

It was at that time, Matt reckons, they really started to find their feet, locating “amazing” local manufacturers that could complement those in Auckland, as well as finding ways to make that split work. “Working between both cities for our

They say there’s nothing like a change of scenery, and it has certainly rung true for Matt Genefaas and Dan Craig, the duo behind design company Made of Tomorrow.

First, there was the biggest move from Auckland to Tauranga in January 2020. “We just needed to have a massive change,” says Matt.

“We had another business we owned at the time as well and everything was getting quite overwhelming in Auckland. I was offered a really good job down here, which prompted the move. Neither of us had spent much time here before, but we both love being at the beach and the job offer lined up with that so it was like, okay, I guess we’re moving!

“And now we wouldn’t have it any other way,” he says. “Living in such a beautiful smaller town is really refreshing, there are so many young creatives, well, creatives in general, down here — I don’t think we can put ourselves in the young category anymore, 63

With production on the rise, it was time for another change of scene — though this time they stayed in the Bay. “We basically grew out of our garage,” says Matt, “and realised we needed more space.”

They’re now installed in a newly finished 130m2 space in Tauriko, complete with a 7-foot indoor tōtara, suitably cool design features and plenty of room. The slick spot is studio, showroom and storage facility all rolled into one, and is already serving both the boys and their business very well. “Our vision for it was to create a place where we could come to work and feel inspired; that in turn would help with inspiring new products and just making things run as smoothly as possible so we could do more in other areas of the business,” Matt explains.

“It was important for us to create a space with our products on display so that we could come in to work and see the whole range as an

And what started with just one product — a sleek folded steel shelf — has now expanded into a considered edit of design pieces. The range features sought-after side tables, clever curvy mirrors, further chic shelving and their signature stationery, which includes quick-to-sell-out diaries made using recycled coffee cups (more on them shortly).

Matt says Made of Tomorrow started “from Dan and I not feeling inspired by the work that we were doing at the time. We wanted to do something that was inspiring and we wanted to create beautiful things, and cool things, that we didn’t necessarily think were already on the market. We loved how simple using sheet metal and folded steel was — there’s just a really clean design to it. We love creating simple, minimal products that aren’t too flashy. disposable cups from landfill. As well as being entirely made from recycled materials, including all those old coffee cups, the diaries are fully recyclable with no sneaky nasty plastic bits, and draw on eight different businesses across New Zealand to produce.

“The diaries are the massive staple in our range,” says Matt. “It’s quite crazy seeing how much it has grown every year. We’ve done them since 2016 and I’m just looking down the showroom now at, like, eight pallets filling up the space — boxes and boxes. The volume grew from just a tiny little order, to us being one of the biggest diary manufacturers in the country.”

Now that they’ve started settling into their new work digs, Matt and Dan have also added a further change of scene — and their biggest design project by far — a new-build waterfront house in Tauranga. “We would never have been able to do that in Auckland,” says Matt. The house promises the same sustainably minded, functional but uncompromisingly stylish aesthetic their company is renowned for (the pair are recording the process on social media @madeoftomorrowbuild) and they’ll be sharing the abode with the latest addition to the Made of Tomorrow team, French bulldog pup Billie. It has also helped improve our efficiency with sending orders, shooting new content and doing all of this sort of fun, creative stuff that we’ve not previously had the space to do.

“We kept the range really tight for a long time, and now that we’ve got a bit more space, we’re able to create more products, bigger products, and we work across different projects now — lots of commercial fit-outs for hotels and private design jobs...” says Matt.

“So having that space allows us to do those big fancy jobs and makes things a bit easier.”

They’ve also just had their first public open day, an event they’re planning to hold on the regular (next one is on 11 December). This is when new and old fans can sup a hot beverage from the coffee cart parked out front, and check out the full Made of Tomorrow range in real life, have their diaries personalised with smart gold embossing, and meet the dynamic duo in person.

These glimpses of 1960s Tauranga, from the Tauranga Heritage Collection, show that while some things have changed immensely, other parts of life in the beautiful Bay are very similar indeed.

↑ The annual Tauranga Orange Festival was launched in 1961. The climax of the festival was the coronation of the Citrus Queen and the Coronation Ball. At its peak, the festival attracted about 70,000 people to the region. Home Farm talks fruit trees, including how to select the best trees and how to foster a diverse food forest that’ll give you access to delicious fresh fruit, year round.

As the summer days get hotter, you may find yourself looking for some shade and a cool breeze. Add some fresh fruit to the mix and I reckon you’ve got a pretty sweet situation going on. Yes indeed, I’m talking about fruit trees! And in this column, we’re not just talking about that standalone lemon tree in your neighbour’s yard. We are talking about lots of trees, producing all kinds of fruit, all year round!

In the previous two Grow Together columns, we’ve described setting up a growing space, then planting it out with diverse communities of seasonal vegetables that support and encourage each other.

In this column, we are taking those same ideas and applying them to the longer living, perennial plants that are fruiting trees.

With so many different kinds of trees that produce a diverse range of fruit, it can send our heads into a spin when choosing which ones we would like to grow ourselves. Apart from obviously growing what we like to eat, a good place to start when planting out a successful food forest is to look at our climate. From there, we can then learn which plants will thrive in our unique bioregion.

Here, in the beautiful Te Moana-a-Toi Bay of Plenty, we range from temperate to subtropical.

This means we have places situated inland, like Rotorua, where heavy frosts make for more temperate conditions. In contrast, our coastal areas, such as Mount Maunganui, stay relatively frost free all year round, providing conditions suitable for growing more subtropical varieties. (The Bay is also littered with micro-climate pockets that can offer subtropical growing conditions in otherwise temperate areas.) See the box on the opposite page for our temperate and subtropical recommendations.

Once we’ve decided on what fruit trees we want to grow, the next step is to get them planted.

At Home Farm, we don’t just plant singular trees — we plant guilds! We introduced guilds in our previous Grow Together column with the help of Frida Lotz-Keegan, from PermaDynamics in Northland, who has been very successful in growing food forests in this way for quite some time. Guilds are basically a diverse group of plants — centred around one primary plant — that when planted all together, form a resilient community that help and support the growth of every member involved.

Each member of the guild plays a part in the successful establishment and longevity of the guild itself. Some of these members are not directly edible, but contribute in other ways. For example, some act as living fertiliser — they accumulate minerals and nutrients from the earth and store them in their leaves. When these plants are cut back, and their stems and leaves are laid on the ground to decompose, all they’ve accumulated is then released back into the earth in a form the other guild members can absorb through their roots and use for growth.

The same goes for pruning any member of the guild — the prunings can be reused as mulch around the guild and that decomposition leads to fertility for future growth. For that reason, including fast-growing non-edible trees that function as mulch makers is a smart move.

An even smarter move is to include a fastgrowing tree that not only produces beneficial mulch material, but produces shelter for the other members in the early establishment years. Plants that can provide multiple services are a great choice for the guild.

When planting in such a dense fashion, it’s important to keep in mind the size that every plant will eventually reach. Diversity not only applies to the different varieties of plants in the guild, but also the varying amounts of space they’ll ultimately take up.

Managing growth by pruning is an essential task — it can be daunting at first (and is called ‘unnatural’ by some), but if we do it at the right time, working with the guild system, we can actually make space for, and stimulate, new growth, as well as creating future fertility in the form of mulch. In this way, we can think of ourselves as a member of the guild!

Guilds attract a diverse range of life above and below ground. When a member flowers, it attracts pollinators and beneficial insects. The roots not only uptake nutrients, but release sugars that attract and nourish the soil life underground. All of this life that’s being attracted to these plants build health and resilience against pests and diseases.

Imagine if you were a tree — would you prefer growing up all on your lonesome or with a bunch of mates around you? I know what life I would choose!

In a large painting titled Waiting, a woman sits alone on a bed looking at her lap. Another finds a teenage figure sinking into the couch, eyes staring blankly into the distance. Across town on Durham St, colourful flags fly from poles, in one a ‘Welcome Home’ banner is strung across the entrance as a panting wolf-like figure welcomes two children home.

Whilst on another, two young girls from the 1950s, one in a mask, are surrounded by bubbles containing fighter planes. Exploding text reads ‘POP!’.

March 2020 lockdown was the start of what has been a strange and uncertain time. Since then, emotions and anxieties have been, well, all over the show. It’s been hard.

For Tauranga based artists Nicol SandersO’Shea and Emma Bossley, the pandemic inspired a shift in their respective creative practices. Through printmaking and painting, they began attempting to understand and process emotions and experiences that had become part of their everyday.

Emma recalls the first lockdown, which closed her workplace Tauranga Art Gallery. At home, she suddenly had all her children back under the same roof. Her eldest, in her 20s, had been planning to travel but overnight everything changed.

“Moving out of home, travelling and exploring the world is a Kiwi rite of passage. It’s such a special time. As a mother, I was so anxious and disappointed for her. You want your children to have every opportunity to become their future selves, just as

we did, and there we were, all stuck at home together, staring into devices”.

Nicol is the Academic Leader Art and Design at Toi Ohomai. Her family had just moved into a new home, but their furniture was being used to stage the old property. “My husband and I had two teenagers, mattresses on the floor and some fold-out chairs from Kmart. Being in lockdown in the new home was hard. The empty house was our entire physical world”.

Emma set up a studio in a spare bedroom, and Nicol began a big project, utilising her empty rooms.

Nicol often sources post-WWII imagery from ‘50s and ‘60s boys and girls annuals, ‘how to’ and first aid guides. Through playing around with the composition and repetition of imagery, she has established a distinct aesthetic that has a sense of nostalgia and familiarity.

With plenty of time on her hands, she started printing and repeating a single image from a 1960s first aid guide, with a man trying to resuscitate a woman. At the same time, the Government started to roll out the now familiar advertising campaign, New Zealand’s own first aid guide to surviving Covid-19. It was a light-bulb moment as the artist introduced the radiating imagery, QR codes and warning text to her screen prints.

by Nicol Sanders-O’Shea. overflows and bomb-like courier packages are dropped off. A man is breaking into (or escaping from?) home, whilst in another, two boys battle it out in a boxing ring. A game of snakes and ladders is played and a rocket ship (or is it a needle?) takes off. Pops of fluorescent colour punctuate the works.

There’s a sense of evil lurking with slithering snakes, skulls and alarmist messages. On the home front panic, anxiety and terror is barely contained.

Meanwhile in another part of the city…

Emma talks about time during lockdown feeling “simultaneously expansive and claustrophobic”. This is echoed in her semi-abstract paintings of figures in interior spaces. Her subjects embody the ‘emotional heaviness’ of lockdown.

Shoulders hunch and sag, bodies are perched at the end of the bed or sink into the couch. Their gaze never catches your eye. As a viewer there’s a sense that you are intruding on what is a private moment, full of vulnerability. Sitting in the bedroom, lounge or kitchen. Locked up in the home. Are they protected or trapped? Earthy tones anchor each work, although there’s nothing light and airy here.

Windows offer views to the landscape beyond.

A power pole makes a regular appearance between paintings, situating the scene in an urban setting.

Shoes have been slipped off, a single stool is empty and, in another, a bowl of arranged fruit — but for who to eat? Time is passing by. It’s about the now.

Each artist brings a strong domestic perspective to their artworks. Tension, frustration,

sadness and love are emotions often at play in any home. Covid-19 just upped the stakes.

Collectively their artworks are symbolic of the many emotions we have all felt at some time.

As a friend commented, “it’s a mood”.

For the artists, taking time to think, draw and paint has been essential to their personal wellbeing. Being able to disappear into the daily repetition and detail of artmaking has been soothing, and days have passed quicker for it.

Nicol and Emma both comment how, over the last 18 months, our focus on the domestic environment has become central to our lives. Not only do we want our homes to be more comfortable and functional as places of work and play, we also wish to contemplate the difficult world unfolding around us through original artworks.

This has meant their paintings and prints have connected with new audiences and collectors.

Both artists have had recent exhibitions, with Emma selling her piece Waiting to a collector from one of the world’s most locked-down cities, Melbourne.

“The painting resonated with the buyer,” says Emma.

“It captures an important moment in time.”

Mount Brewing Co Promotion

Mount Brewing Co. has been creating superb beers for 25 years!

Now it’s in the hands of the next generation and continues to deliver its high-quality, innovative beers to locals and beyond.

“We always wanted to get involved,” says Briar.

“Mum and Dad were busy with The Rising Tide after rebranding from Brewer’s Bar in 2016, so we knew the brewery was in need of attention. Niall and I jumped at the opportunity to come back and make our mark.”

“It’s always been about the lifestyle — living in the Mount, going to the beach, cracking a beer with friends. We love the ‘crafty’ side of the brewery, but our main focus is making something for everyone.

We want Mount Brewing Co to be the six-pack you chuck in the trolley every week. A beer you can always rely on.”

When it comes to cold brews, 25-year-old Briar Meikle is an unassuming expert.

You could say it comes with the territory — Briar’s father Glenn Meikle started Mount Brewing Co 25 years ago (when Briar was just a few weeks old), so she’s quite literally grown up with the brewery.

“We’re an iconic local name, but also a well-kept secret,” she laughs. “People know The Rising Tide, but they don’t realise our product is made on site.

Or that the brewery has been running for 25 years!”

Mount Brewing Co is proudly family owned and operated, and has been since day one. In 2019, Briar and her partner Niall returned home from travelling to take the reins of the business (which includes the brewery, The Rising Tide, and the Super Liquor out front), allowing founders Glenn and Virginia to take a well-earned step back.

All About the Craft As fate would have it, Briar (marketing and creative) and Irishman Niall (sales and operations) first met working behind the bar at The Rising Tide, while Niall was here on a working holiday. They were early fans of craft beer and are now hell-bent on leading — rather than following — the movement.

“There are 300 odd breweries in New Zealand, which tells us people want more than just mainstream options — they want a beer that reflects quality and craftsmanship,” says Niall. Briar adds: “Our focus at the moment is making the core range [of ten beers, four ciders and two G&Ts] clean and consistent, while also giving the brewers freedom to experiment.”

This is where new products come into play — Mount Brewing Co has always been known for its crafty creations, but the brewery now produces three 90

limited-edition seasonal beers per season. “Brewers are like chefs,” says Briar. “They’re creatives, they have a process. It’s important they have space to experiment and do their thing.”

It’s quite the high-pressure situation, these seasonal brews. “Craft beer needs to be fresh — you can’t put something in a can then wait a month to produce labels,” Niall explains. “So once we decide on a flavour, we commit fully. We go the whole hog and make 1200 litres.”

The wildest concoction so far? According to Niall, “It would have to be the Breakfast of Champions — a toasted banana, blueberry, maple syrup and vanilla pastry stout.” But seasonal beers aren’t the only new addition to the lineup. “We got our hands on some merlot barrels and currently have two stouts ageing, where they’ll stay for a couple of years. Barrel-aged beer is something new for our brewers, and also a novelty for the customers at Rising Tide to see the process.”

Onwards & Upwards Briar and Niall stepped up at a particularly turbulent time (hello, global pandemic!), but managed to level up the brand’s marketing, build a stronger team culture, and increase yearly sales by 30 percent. “People underestimate us because we’re young, but innovation starts with fresh ideas,” says Briar. “Dad started the business when he was 25, and he’s still such an entrepreneur. He pushes us to think outside the box.”

“We’re lucky to have Glenn and Virginia guiding us,” adds Niall. “They’ve always told us to lead by example, so the team morale we’ve nurtured is something we’re really proud of.”

So, what’s next for these local legends? A little birdie tells us they’ve got something big in store for 2023… “Let’s just say Pāpāmoa is in for a treat,” says Briar. “Our long-term goal is to see Mount Brewing Co in every supermarket across the country, but in the meantime, it’s all about looking after our locals and doing what we do best — making damn good beer!”

Birthday Treats To celebrate their silver anniversary, Mount Brewing Co has released a special take on the brew that put them on the map. “Mermaids is the oldest beer in the brewery, so it was only fitting to make an unfiltered version as a celebration of our journey and a ‘thank you’ to our loyal drinkers and stockists,” says Briar.

“Think of it as a bigger, badder Mermaids Mirth — more fruity hops, no filtration and a dense malt body.”

If you were lucky enough to be at the last Beast of a Feast, in Mount Maunganui in 2018, you’ll recall top food, a mind-boggling selection of beers and an eclectic music lineup. Well tighten your sun visor, it’s back and better than ever!

In February 2022, Beast of a Feast returns to Soper Reserve, so get ready to mingle with some of the country’s best brewers, enjoy flavour-packed food from around the globe, and see a range of kickass Kiwi artists take to the stage.

Who are the BOAF Masterminds?

We’re excited that RedHearing has now taken the reins of Beast of a Feast. RedHearing events is made up of 25-year-old best mates, Perry Farrell and Mat Hansen, who are accountants with a side hustle in music events.

After years studying in Dunedin, the guys missed the parties, music and gig-orientated culture, 96

and were inspired to bring some of that to Tauranga.

“That was the birth of RedHearing — we wanted to bring a vibrant, fresh approach to a city that lacked a real gig culture,” explains Perry.

And they’ve certainly gone a long way to achieving that, with more than 10 sold-out shows in Tauranga in the last three years, showcasing many of New Zealand’s biggest musical artists as well as amazing upcoming acts. For those lucky enough to have the luxury of lounging around reading this summer, we present Sam’s Summer Reading Guide.

Wow — what a crazy few months!

Luckily, I felt somewhat prepared, having spent the last 20 years reading dystopian near future sci-fi novels. A virus, benevolent leader with a communications degree, big pharma and a media brimming with government ad spend is as gentle as it gets. Trust me, it could be way worse. There was no AI involved, I’m pretty sure we haven’t been chipped, we’ve still got heaps of water (in Aotearoa anyway) and honeybees, and enough Ozone left that we’re not in stillsuits.

Now, summer is apparently the time to catch up on reading. I’m not sure about you, but it seems counterintuitive to me. Especially if you have children… “Sorry mate, can’t take you to the beach right now. I’m three quarters of the way through The Luminaries, I’ve only got 800 pages to go, maybe next month.” It’s def more of a winter, on a couch with a blanket activity.

But despite my concerns, I’ve decided to compile Sam’s Summer Reading Guide.

It’s not without some trepidation. I’m quite nervous about recommending books, not because I’m worried you might not like them or disagree with my superb analysis, but mainly because I can’t stand the inherent smugness in most book recommendations. Most of them read like a Tinder bio for nerds, the reviewer taking centre stage, seeking to curry favour with like-minded Croc-clad critics. A cover letter for a job in academia, an obscure band t-shirt at an indie show, a whimpering plea to the cultural gatekeepers of cool — please, please let me in... So mea culpa in advance if I start heading that way and, if you ever catch me in a turtleneck, call me out.

1984, George Orwell Straight out the gate, I’m leading with this read. Kinda for obvious reasons, but also because of the ending. How someone in 1949 had that level of insight is amazing. Animal Farm, of “while all animals are equal, some animals are more equal than others” fame, and Down and out in Paris and London are awesome too.

Jack Reacher series, Lee Child I’m pretty sure bots write them now, but as long as he keeps drinking copious amounts of coffee, waking up without an alarm at 4am and being maliciously compliant, I’ll keep reading. It’s a heady mix of Americana and hometown geography, stirred with gratuitous violence.

The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand Think for yourself!

I would have said her novel Atlas Shrugged, but it has a speech that goes on for about 70 pages… boring. Just to be really clear, thinking for yourself doesn’t mean getting a PhD from YouTube and then punishing all and sundry with Yuval Harari or Joe Rogan lines (I did like his Elon Muck interview).

Edmonds Cookery Book Scones, pikelets and chocolate cake. Grandma wasn’t improvising.

The one for kids is even better.

The Penguin History of New Zealand, Michael King He wore glasses, but they weren’t rose tinted. This was written before the onslaught of post-modern pluralism sunk the ship, so actually has more interesting facts than hand wringing.

The Runner, Cynthia Voigt Bullet wouldn’t get two jabs — he’d make sure he got three. Sign on before they get you with the draft. This may be classified as young adult fiction, but the themes are as relevant now as they ever were.

There we have it. Four anti-heroes, a cookbook and school history tome. Something for everyone!

Clarence Tauranga, in the splendid historic Post Office, is an ever-evolving project for owners Kim Smythe and Noel Cimadom — their vision and innovative ideas constantly delighting the regulars who appreciate great food, drinks and ambience.

The latest standout addition to the Clarence Bistro is the new pavilion — a room that cleverly introduces an indoor/outdoor feel to diners. A modern glasshouse of sorts, it solved the problem of an outdoor area that was very under-utilised, due to being weather dependent. It’s now a year-round destination, complete with a UV-filtered glass ceiling (so you can still see the glorious building above), the ability to open the sides in warmer climes, and a centrepiece fireplace.

With views out to the surrounding greenery, the 48-seat room may give the impression of dining alfresco, but the furnishings are most definitely plush: floral burgundy-hued banquettes, mojito marble tables and mosaic floor tiles. It would be the perfect area for an intimate event.

Clarence Bistro is known for excellent dinners, but Kim and Noel also want the new space to be a haven for long lunching, encouraging groups of friends to come and while away the day, moving from drinks and snacks, to a leisurely lunch, followed by more drinks…

Four years ago, the couple undertook this massive Clarence project, which involved creating the upstairs boutique hotel, the bistro and the more casual dining area, now called Bar Centrale. It was a game changer for Tauranga. After having lived with the design for some time, they’ve introduced sweeping changes inside the bistro. “We’ve definitely relaxed it,” says Noel. “The seating inside is now a mix of higher chairs, a burnt-orange banquette, a chef’s table that seats four at the kitchen pass, and bar area with small marble tables. It’s created a great atmosphere.”

“We got to the stage where we really understood what we loved and treasured the most, and we’ve brought back more of the soul of the building,” says Kim. “We’ve introduced warm colours and materials as well as sound proofing — it’s so much cosier and all the spaces really sing together now. The energy is there.”

The Bistro’s new bar area is a good way to ease yourself into the night, with a cocktail and a couple of the delicacies from the Small Bites menu, such as Te Matuku oysters, a crayfish roll, charcuterie selection, duck liver parfait and Parmesan churros with truffle cream.
