If so, we have a challenge! Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) is 14-20 Mahuru (September) and we reckon we can all be using the correct pronunciation ('toe-rung-ah') by then. It can feel awkward changing a life-long pronunciation, but it soon becomes second nature and when others hear you, it encourages them to change as well. See page 23 for some other phrases you can use in everyday life. Kia kaha!

Our Place Tauranga is undergoing some exciting changes in the next few months, with the introduction of the Re:Maker Space. We all know about the immense waste problem we have as a society, which we're all trying to combat in various ways.

This new project will be dedicated to giving new life to products otherwise destined for landfill — upskilling the community on ways to recycle, reuse and repurpose everything from timber and textiles to furniture. Check out page 15 to learn more.

We also meet the creative couple behind the new haven of design, Dandie Store (28) and take a look at the life of Andy 'Grommo' Jordan, surfer and shaper extraordinaire (38).

What’s Up ‘The Odd’ Couple​ A Little Odd has been created by friends Sian Evans (an abstract painter, pictured right) and Abbie Steens (a fine art photographer, left), who want to bring something new to Tauranga’s arts scene.

They’re hatching a plan to host fun, innovative pop-up art events at venues that aren’t normally associated with exhibitions. Expect the best drinks, music and all-round vibe at the events, which the pair will design, market and host, as well as sell artworks on behalf of artists.

The public is invited to their latest exhibition, Wide Awake, which also doubles as the launch of A little Odd, at Nana’s Batch at Astrolabe Brewbar, 6–10pm on 13 August. @alittleoddnz

A Place in the Sun Gather is owned by Karen and her daughter Freya, who also owns Mahana Yoga Loft upstairs, so now you can do yoga then refuel on a smoothie bowl (a specialty) or an Underground coffee. The pair wanted to create a welcoming space for friends to gather, hence the name. The interior is a fusion of their favourite places: Bali, Mexico and Morocco. It has an sunny, exotic vibe, with white walls, wooden and cane furniture, and terracotta notes seen in sculptural vases, cushions and cacti pots.

The travel theme extends to food, with the Uluwatu smoothie (spinach, super-greens powder, banana, pineapple and kiwifruit) and the Canggu dragonfruit smoothie bowl.

What’s Up Nana Knows Best Courtney Takai’s beloved nana Ruthy passed away a year ago, but her name lives on in Courtney’s new cafe. Her nana’s home was somewhere she felt welcome and comfortable, and there were always treats — and this is what Ruthy’s cafe is all about too. Our Place Tauranga welcomes the Re:Maker Space — a hub dedicated to rethinking our approach to waste, focusing on the circular economy and sharing skills within the community.

The year 2020 has been a catalyst for change. Faced with unprecedented and devastating social, environmental and political challenges, our communities have started to acknowledge the need to change the ways in which we live, eat, travel and do business.

Over the past two years, Our Place Tauranga has become known as the vibrant, beating heart of Tauranga City. Initially established as short-term and scalable, the intention was always for OPT to help bring long-term, positive change for people and businesses that call Tauranga home. With all its challenges, 2020 has provided the ideal opportunity to initiate this long-term vision by finding healthy, positive and creative ways to move towards the “new normal”.

As part of realising this vision, OPT founders Chris and Rachelle Duffy have partnered with the founders of Good Neighbour Food Rescue and Kitchen, Jackie and John Paine, and Lavina Good, to create the Re:Maker Space within OPT. “Sustainability is central to our community,” says Jackie. “At Good Neighbour, we saw a passion among volunteers and the community to get involved in projects that make an impact.

Our own passion for waste, education and working with the community aligned perfectly with Our Place’s philosophy and vision for the future.”

The partnership will essentially see 60 per cent of OPT’s retail area 16

converted into the Re:Maker Space, an intergenerational gathering space that inspires and encourages people to actively rethink, resource, reuse and redistribute objects through talks, workshops and creative workspaces. OPT’s excellent food and drink offerings and live entertainment will remain.

How to Grow a Community of Makers Today’s linear approach to the use of resources is seeing all of the discarded stuff we no longer need or want heading straight to landfill, thereby polluting our environment. Many of these items could have their life extended or be repurposed into other products. But the Re:Maker team’s vision is wider than just dealing with this immense waste, they’re also aware that many young people in our community are not flourishing at school and need other options.“We wanted to create a space to grapple with some of the big questions our community is facing in 2020 and help them be part of the solution,” says John.

“Our experience with the Good Neighbour Kitchen also demonstrated that students currently struggling with their existing education environment can be empowered to succeed — if given the

right creative and supportive environment. This space will facilitate the success of these students,” says John. “We believe we can solve waste challenges within our own community, by connecting people, ideas and resources, to help support a circular economy.”

International working models of re-making include The Remakery in London and Dublin’s Rediscovery Centre, while in New Zealand, The Warren in Auckland is a good example of dealing with wood waste.

The Re:Maker Space will be set up as a place to explore waste management ideas that are being developed nationally and worldwide, and implement them in practical and sustainable ways in our own community.

It will also serve as a platform to harness Kiwi ingenuity and creativity to tackle waste

issues. “Kiwis are incredibly resourceful and creative. When given the right environment, technical support and business support we can inspire the activation of these ideas into reality,” says Jackie.

“The opportunities to reuse, repurpose and upcycle are limited only by our imagination. We’ll start with textiles, wood and furniture, and build up community teams by collaborating with the university and polytechnic, local businesses and professionals to launch incubators, host workshops and creative Previous page: Jackie and John Paine at Our Place Tauranga. “We look forward to getting it up and running,” says John. “It really is a community effort, and we’d like to express our gratitude to Tauranga City Council for their confidence in the initiative and the positive impact it can have on our community.”

Inspired by a renowned 60s fashion boutique, Dandie Store in Mount Maunganui is an imaginative new shop that’s all about thoughful design, lush colours and a whole lot of cool.

If you’re looking to breathe some new life into your home and wardrobe — inhale!

Dandie Store has breezed into town and brings with it a blast of fresh air in the form of new labels and brands, and a distinct air of personality and originality. You may have wondered at the orange-chocolate-chip hued façade of the new Maunganui Road store as you’ve driven past. It has its own particular vibe, tucked as it is in between a very typical New Zealand street scene: dairy, fish and chip shop, cafe, the library over the road... a setting which had great appeal for the owners Rosie Ackland and Josh Milward. So, what lies within, and what’s with the name?

Meet Rosie & Josh Josh and Rosie are no strangers to fashion, furniture and retail. Many of you will be familiar with both of their brands.

Sitting Pretty Furniture is the sustainable metal furniture designed and manufactured at their Whakamarama home by Josh. After finishing school, Josh completed a mechanical engineering apprenticeship here in the Bay of Plenty with Pacific Sawmill Engineering, where he worked for four years. In his spare time, he started making “bits and pieces of furniture” with an interest grounded in a family background in furniture retail.

People liked what Josh was creating and began asking him to make pieces for them, which he did — chairs, shelves, tables, storage frames and more, in bespoke colours. With an increase in demand and a desire to strike out on his own, Josh has been full time with Sitting Pretty Furniture ↖ Creative couple Rosie and Josh want to offer the community a unique shopping experience at Dandie Store

for a year now and is currently continuing to develop his second series of designs.

Rosie studied fashion in Auckland at AUT and following a year in fashion retail felt she needed to spread her wings, launching Beach Knickers soon after. She started out with cotton bikinis, bloomers (beach knickers) and then pyjamas, and eventually moved into complete collections typified by dresses with feminine, whimsical lines, delicate prints, wide-legged pants in bold stripes made with cottons and other natural fabrics. Rosie employs local seamstresses to make all of her garments, sourcing materials locally too. Many of the designs are trans-seasonal, all of them are vintage inspired. Beach Knickers is now stocked in around 13 retail stores in New Zealand and is the featured clothing brand in the couple’s new store.

What’s in a Name?

Earlier this year the duo was on a South Island road trip and as they passed through Wellington, they headed to Cuba Street’s iconic Ziggurat Fashion Emporium, one of New Zealand’s most established vintage stores. “We were looking for a wedding suit for Josh, our wedding is coming up this summer,” Rosie explains. “We found the perfect one and when we looked inside the jacket, we saw a label… Dandie Tailoring. A quick google revealed an intriguing story about this late '60s London fashion store, which happened to be a favourite with many of our musical heroes — The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.”

The original Dandie Tailoring had its own back story, situated as it was on London’s King's Road in 1966, quickly becoming known for silk frilled shirts, velvet suits in a rainbow of colours and 29

“Did you ever dream about a place you never really recall being to before? A place that maybe only exists in your imagination? Some place far away, half remembered when you wake up. When you were there, though, you knew the language. You knew your way around. That was the sixties....

No. It wasn’t that either. It was just ‘66 and early ‘67.

art nouveau designs. It was frequented by many flamboyant characters of the youthdriven cultural revolution era known as the Swinging Sixties. In 1968 Dandie Tailoring was purchased by regular customers, The Beatles, who renamed the boutique Apple Tailoring, under the umbrella of their Apple Enterprise.

The story of this London sixties boutique intrigued and appealed to Rosie and Josh. As they visited the New Zealand stockists of Beach Knickers during their South Island roadie, they became more enchanted by the positive shopping experiences they had along the way and the stories of the owners they encountered.

It was this that inspired them to open Dandie Store, embed themselves in their local community, and focus on creating an enjoyable retail experience showcasing the New Zealand designed and made products.

“We want Dandie Store to inspire people to think about the products in it, who has made them and where they’ve come from,” says Rosie. “As well as providing a fun local shopping experience.”

Return of the Dandie Dandie Store is a light and airy space — the vaulted ceiling provides natural light and sunshine streams through from the street front, where a window-seat is an enticing place to curl up and leaf through the many design books Josh has displayed on his swirling wave-like wall shelf. Late 60s, early 70s music provides a sing-along mood, played of course from a turntable that rests on one of Josh’s creations that have provided the fit out for the space.

Rosie’s vintage glassware pieces perch here and there adding to a homely, living-room atmosphere.

The back door opens to a freshly planted garden of hydrangeas which Rosie says will provide the perfect backdrop to summer gatherings. The overhaul of the shop, which was once a butchery and more recently a real estate agency, happened over five weeks with the couple’s friends and families pitching in to help.

“We were so lucky to have the help we did,” says Josh, “it was hard work but a lot

of fun getting the place the way we want it.” Both Rosie and Josh grew up and attended school in Tauranga and being local certainly has advantages when it’s time to call in the helping hands.

Displayed in-store alongside Beach Knickers and Sitting Pretty Furniture are the other labels, each of which has a connection to the couple. There is an exclusive jewellery range by Tashji, Rosie’s schoolfriend who trained as a goldsmith in Auckland; dreamy silk feminine tops and dresses by Lulu of Molly Perkinson, “The best pattern maker I know,” says Rosie. Sumptuous, snuggly wool and mohair knits in strong colours by Frisson Knits, made by knitters in Auckland; cushions in playful shapes and colours, ideal for plumping out those awkward spaces; quirky, colourful candles by Lex Pott of Rotterdam.

It’s not all about the girls though, with a unisex range of semi-tailored shirts by Lucky Dip Inventory, made in 34

bright, one-off recycled fabrics in florals, checks and monochrome corduroy providing excellent casual-wear options.

Made by the couple’s friend Tuhirangi, the Melbourne-based designer will be keeping a steady flow of garments available for the store. Another must to check out for the boys is the range by Big Sun (see the retro board shorts) made by local resident Ryan, who will soon be featuring one of his custom-made surfboards in-store too. Sunglasses by Auór and Cherry Eyewear, organic cotton plant-dyed underwear by Australian label, Hara… all bases are covered.

A visit to Dandie Store and a catch up with this delightful couple is one of those things you just have to do when you’re beachside in the Bay, with every visit guaranteed to offer something fun and vibrant, fine and dandy.

If you've grown up surfing in Mount Maunganui, or moved here as a surfer, you’ll be very aware of the name Andy Jordan. You’ve either had one (or many) of his amazing boards or watched him duck under the lip and perfectly weave through a heaving Matakana Island tube.

At 57 years old Andy, or 'Grommo' as he is more affectionately known, still out-surfs most crew in the water. It's not uncommon to see him surf three sessions a day with the vigour of a 17 year old; he is the eternal grommet. He’d be the oldest guy still regularly surfing the Island and, in many cases, setting the pace too.

His reputation as a surfboard shaper has seen him develop a loyal following of clients nationwide who consistently order his proven shapes.

Andy found a love for building boards early on and decided to have a go at shaping a few at home while he was 40

still at school, but his dad banned him early on for ruining the garage when he attempted to glass one of them.

Not long after, in 1984, he worked for Impact Surfboards at Mount Maunganui under Jim Carney and Neville Hill as a ding repair guy, then a sander, fin foiler, polisher as well as doing gloss and filler coats. During 1985/86 Andy did a stint in Torquay for Strapper Surfboards, again on the production line. He returned in ’86 to work for Jim again at JC surfboards. This is where he started to shape boards under Jim's eye and also use the knowledge gleaned from hours spent watching other shapers in the Bay. Around 1987, Andy and good friend Richard Peake bought the business from Jim and started Jordan/Peake surfboards.

Andy was the shaper and Richard was the glasser — an on-and-off partnership that has lasted to this day. After two years,

Andy moved on to work for High Voltage surfboards under Mike Murden, as a shaper, sander and fin foiler until he started the Jordan Surfboards label in 1996, again joining forces with Richard as his glasser.

Although he didn't really chase it, Andy found competitive success with his surfing over the years — travelling to Japan with our national team in 1990 to surf in the open division of the ISA World Surfing Games. He also won a national title in 2001 in the over-35 division, adding weight to his ability to transfer his designs to a high-performance scenario.

Andy attributes some of his shaping Influence to Ralph Blake from Gisborne and good friend Rodney Dahlberg, who was once shaper to high-profile surfers like Mark Occhilupo and Joel Parkinson, and now Creed Mctaggart. Andy has spent a lot of time

visiting Rod in Angourie, Australia developing theories and visualising water flow; taking some Australian ideas and designs but adapting the curvy boards to work in New Zealand's flatter waves.

After 36 years building boards in the Mount, Andy is moving to Japan with his wife, Keiko.

What was it like growing up in the Bay? I grew up in Tauranga and the first time I noticed surfing was roughly 1975; I was about 12 years old and we went for a drive over to the Mount. I vividly remember my mum saying, "Look at all the surfers, they look like seals.” I was mesmerised.

A surfboard was all I wanted for Christmas from that day.

Summer finally came around and I got a surfboard to share with my brother, Hugh. I would talk my parents into driving me over to the beach until Hugh got a car, 41

then we would head off after school or work. Eventually Hugh got a flat in the Mount and I would leave my board there and pushbike from Tauranga over the railway bridge.

I still remember my first brand-new custom board, it was a Greyseal 6ft wing pin, single fin. I worked so hard and saved my paper run money to buy that board — a whole $175! The Mount was pretty cool back then, it was a tight-knit community and every spot had its crew, from Arataki, Clyde St, Tay St all the way to Sutherland Ave and Main Beach.

How did the nickname ‘Grommo’ come about?

It was on the way to the national teams contest in Gisborne with a motley and intimidating crew of surfers: Greg 'Spart' Rhodes, Cedric Bidios, Paul Bennett, 42

Jeremy Williams etc. I was just a junior and Spart, who is a massive guy says, "Geez you’re a f*&ˆ$n little grommet,” and it stuck since then.

Tell us about Jordan Surfboards I started the label around 1996. I've shaped 7490 boards and counting; 5000 of those were handshapes until I moved onto the shaping machine. I'm proud to have built a successful business and I've always strived to give clients a great service and fast turnaround. I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity to make boards for local and international surfers. It's pretty cool when a customer comes back and says, “Hey, that board went amazing!"

What’s the process developing/shaping new boards for people?

When a surfer comes in to order a new custom board my goal is to fit the right design to their surfing, so there’s a few specific questions: height, weight, ability level, the type of waves they want to surf.

This gets a lot easier when you've worked with a certain person for a few years and you can really fine-tune their equipment.

Guys like Alex Dive, Clint Reid and Owen Barnes have all helped me develop different designs and models.

How’s the scene changed from your younger days?

One thing I've noticed is the different groups of surfers now. Back in the early days we were all on the same programme: we all surfed single fins, then we all surfed twins, then we all surfed thrusters.

Nowadays, you have your performance guys, your longboard guys, your alternative guys riding fishes, twins etc.

I guess it's just all the old designs coming back into fashion and being developed to 43

perform even better than they used to with modern ideas. It's really cool to see a lot more girls and young kids out surfing too.

I love the dynamic in the water.

How does it feel to be still surfing at Matakana Island after 40 years?

I've travelled the world: Mexico, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Tahiti… the list goes on, but nothing beats a special session surfing at Matakana Island. It’s home and where I feel the most comfortable. It does get a lot harder as I get older but I try to keep my body in shape as best I can.

The growth in crowds has changed things too, as it adds a certain sense of suffocation in the lineup — I like to have a bit of space and time to choose my waves, and things are just a little more intense over there now. But hey, that's 44

just evolution, I'm not bitter at all. I’m very grateful to have surfed the best years over there — my first session was back in 1978!

What takes you to Japan?

My wife Keiko is from Japan and after doing nine trips there, you could say I've fallen in love with the country. My kids have all grown up and left home [Andy has four daughters from his first wife, Jo, plus six grandchildren] and I feel young again!

It feels like the right time to move. We have built a small house on one of the southern islands of Japan in the Ryu chain. It has a subtropical climate, really fun waves and a lot of beautiful countryside. I'm looking forward to a slower pace of life.

Zarnia Oldham & Dan Comber As told to Elric James

Luca Coffee Shop owner Dan Comber (40) was living a nomadic lifestyle of sun, surf and travel until an online encounter with trainer/wellness coach Zarnia Oldham (33) shifted his attention back home. While neither of them were looking for love, they found it anyway and now, along with their three kids Laney (11), Luca (10) and Archie (7), they’re one big happy blended family.

DAN I started chatting with Zarn after she commented on one of my posts on the ‘gram. It was a picture of Luca and I riding a motorbike in Bali. I was over there for quite a while, so we ended up getting to know each other really well.

Neither of us was looking for a partner.

We were both really independent and happy on our own. Also, both having kids from previous relationships meant the situation was complicated. Still, I couldn’t wait to see her once I got back.

The restructuring of families has been a challenge. You’ve got two people coming together with three children, ex-partners and parents; and just trying to make sure everybody has their say. Zarn has been amazing with Luca though. She’s been really gentle getting to know him, but he’s sort of leaned in to her as well.

She has a habit of putting everyone else first, very doting on the kids. I think maybe because she missed out on a lot growing up, nothing is ever enough for them. I was kind of the same with Luca — he got everything. I called him King Luca. He did what he wanted, he ate what he wanted, he wore what he wanted.

But he’s a good boy, a kind boy. I taught him good morals.

Before I met Zarn, I was a single father who had lost a bit of faith in humans. I was just getting what I wanted out of the world; just travelling and surfing with my son, because I could. I was

making enough money with the business.

But Zarn, she’s kind of helped me refocus.

It started with her being so raw and so open about her mental health. It made me go inside myself and answer a few things.

It’s easy to put up barriers and go, that’s just how it is — that’s life. Instead of going: actually, that’s not morally right.

But Zarn’s brought that back, that fight.

She’s willing to make a stand for what she believes in. Like, she once called the police on a police officer. He said: I am the police! She said: Well, you’re not doing your job properly. She’s quite inspiring and I’m often like, fuck yeah, I’m with her.

She’s really tidied up the shop — got all the i’s dotted and the t’s crossed — ‘cause I’m good at making coffee and dealing with people, but I’m great at letting that other shit slide. In some ways I’m like a curler, I just need to clean the ice in front of her. As long as that ice is clean and she keeps curling, then we’ll just keep going. We just bought a convertible.

Maybe that seems weird in the Covid era, but we’re not waiting for this to happen or that to happen; we know how special life is and we don’t want to waste it.

ZARNIA I’m really good at being on my own. So when I first started talking to Dan, I wasn’t sure if I wanted another relationship. I’ve already been through a divorce and everything. But Dan and I were both really honest with each other; 47

we laid it all out on the table quite quickly.

Everything was just really easy with him.

In the end, we decided we’re both the same kind of weird.

Dan takes a lot of my photos for Instagram — he’s taken it on as something to learn. He just loves anything I do that’s creative; I see it in his eyes, they just spark up. Dan went to art school in Wellington.

That’s how he started with Coffee Supreme, servicing machines and doing coffee training, part-time. I think coffee’s a great outlet for him. It’s a bit of an art. You can fuck around with it forever if you wanted to.

Dan says lockdown was his dream come true, being trapped inside with me for a month. And that’s because he hates leaving the house. But for me, it turned my world upside down. I couldn’t go to the gym. As well as being a women’s wellness coach, I also promote training facilities: gyms, pilates studios, lots of different places. So that was completely cut off.

It was probably really hard on Dan and the kids dealing with how frustrated I was at not being able to leave the house.

I really didn’t think I was going to date someone with a child. I was pretty much like: I’m the one with children.

That was my belief. But Luca is such a great kid and he’s so much like my kids, Archie and Laney. Dan’s got a similar approach to parenting where we just guide our children and if they fuck up, then we’re there to pick up the pieces — we’re definitely not helicopter parents.

But I am thankful that Dan’s brought a bit of order to the house, because I was such a softie.

Dan is very sure of himself and I admire that. I once asked him why he started a coffee shop and he said: I always wanted one, it was my dream, so I knew I was going to do it. He calls himself Lucky Danny, because he makes his own luck.

I think I came into the relationship like a grumpy child, just thinking I was naturally unlucky. I always believed that if you say that you’re lucky, you’re going to get shat in the face. But he’s really turned that around for me. Now I’m like, you’re right — you make your own luck.

When Georgie Met Lobo Story By Josie Steenhart Photography by Ilk

Assistance Dogs trains dogs for Kiwis with a disability (usually autistic children). The Farrells tell us about the many ways in which Lobo the labrador has helped their daughter Georgie.

From Super 8 to ‘80s camcorders to today’s high-tech mobile phones — for as long as there’s been home movies, families have been documenting the exciting arrival of new pets. It was no different for the Farrells, who captured the heartwarming moment Georgie, then five, met her new labrador Lobo, in their Tauranga home back in 2015.

What was different was that Lobo, a successful fresh graduate of Assistance Dogs training school was, and is, no ordinary pet.

Georgie is autistic, which, at least until Lobo came along, meant serious behavioural, social and safety issues that frequently left not just her but also her family — mother Liz, father Matthew, and older brothers Patrick and Jack — frustrated and stressed.

At five, pre-Lobo, Georgie was mostly non verbal. “She came out of preschool with a vocabulary of 10 or 12 words, and she used to communicate just by dragging us where she wanted us to go, pointing and just sort of making noises,” says Matthew. Around that time, despite having already taken concerns about their daughter’s hearing to doctors on multiple occasions, a mobile ear nurse at a preschool health checkup diagnosed “quite bad” glue ear, with an estimated 25 to 30 per cent hearing loss — a likely reason Georgie’s speech development was so delayed.

“So it was hard to communicate with Georgie and obviously her frustrations over not being able to communicate led to some behavioural issues, and that causes social issues for a child. If they can’t communicate,

they get frustrated, then that can turn into hitting, kicking, biting, spitting behaviours,” explains Matthew.

Then there was Georgie’s impulsiveness. “At age four, she would step out in front of cars and put her hand up to stop them because she wanted to cross the road,” says Matthew, “and because it was so hard to communicate with her, trying to teach her to cross the road was stressful and dangerous.

“She was getting too big for toddler reins — she’s a big child for her age. You can only hold someone’s hand so hard and still be kind, so it was actually safer to hold her by the wrist and cross the road, because you could actually get hold of her. And it was just... you got the impression people would look at you and think, oh my goodness, that poor child.

“And if you can’t cross the road safely with a child, you can’t even go for a walk,” he says. “You can’t walk around Bayfair with a child that stops at every shop window, stamps her feet and has a tantrum on the floor, or stops at every vending machine and is going to have a lying down, shouting protest about whatever it might be. You can’t live your life having a four year old dictating where you go, how long you stay, how long you wait.”

At that point, says Liz, “all of it was just too hard.”

“The boys needed our attention as well, and you want to do things that are enjoyable. Even our holidays were restricted to staying with family, or friends in Auckland who had known the kids since birth, who we knew we could go to without judgement.”

Around the time Georgie was ready to start school, a visitor at the library where Liz works mentioned she heard someone from the organisation Assistance Dogs speak about the potential benefits of its dogs for children with autism; the family were excited to find out more. “We filled out a form on the website and said, we’re stuck and we think it might help. So they came to visit us and brought a dog, a slightly bigger puppy that was still in training, to see how Georgie reacted. If she was terrified, if she ran off or wouldn’t interact, that would mean there was a good chance it wasn’t going to work — but Georgie was delighted!”

“It was a really positive interaction,” says Liz. “From there they said, we want to take you on as a family, we think a dog can help you and we’ve got a couple of dogs in mind that might work.” Because of Georgie’s size, they felt they needed to get her matched with a dog quickly, so that she learnt the correct behaviours before she became too big for the dog to be an effective anchor for her.”

After a busy year of fundraising for the Farrells and a busy year of training for Lobo, Georgie found herself in charge of a four-pawed companion — or perhaps they’re each in charge of the other.

They took a fortnight to get to know each other, establish boundaries and settle in together as a family, then Assistance Dogs founder Julie Hancox spent a week reinforcing Lobo’s training and ensuring the new BFFs were working in harmony. “We walked the neighbourhood, we went into town, we did a lot of practice crossing the roads, walking around the supermarket, using a lift, using a travelator, going into a mall, going into places where it was noisy, going to places that we avoided generally,” says Matthew. “It had always been just one of us adults that went to the supermarket, 60

we never took the children, so Julie said, ‘No, come on, let’s go to the shops!’”

“And so we spent time just reinforcing that training and that became training Georgie, how Georgie had to behave with Lobo and how to moderate her behaviour by dealing with the dog.”

The pair adapted seamlessly from Georgie wearing a chest harness fastened to Lobo by a strap, to a belt, to a small handle attached to his harness, to walking him herself. “We quickly moved her on to actually leading Lobo,” says Matthew, “because it kept them together and it stopped her from being quite so carefree and mobile, and not really paying attention to her surroundings. It gives her the opportunity to take ownership of Lobo and to be responsible for his wellbeing.”

In the five years since then, Matthew says Georgie’s transformation has been remarkable and much of it can be credited to having Lobo in her life — from better behaviour and the ability to empathise, be gentle and kind and respect boundaries, to making friends and enjoying experiences other 10 year olds might take for granted.

“She’s had five ear operations for grommets, she’s now hearing perfectly, her speech has developed hugely, she’s made great strides with her reading and handwriting, and she has pretty much almost caught up on maths for her age.

Bearing in mind that when she started school at five, she probably had an intellectual age of about two, two and a half, so she’s really come a long way, educationally, emotionally and socially.”

Liz says the changes, while significant, were gradual. “It just sort of sneaks up on you, but when I look back and

In a year where the unimaginable just keeps happening, try to hold tight to any lockdown positives.

“I think that you will all agree that we are living in most interesting times. I never remember myself a time in which our history was so full, in which day by day brought us new objects of interest and, let me say also, new objects for anxiety.”

I’m not sure what was happening in the UK in 1889 but Joseph Chamberlain’s quote appears custom made for the first half of 2020.

Borders boarded up. Citizen cops curtain twitching and narking on their neighbours — fifty thousand times!

Boomers on e-bikes taking over the streets.

Covid has brought into sharp relief what we’ve always known — that science is political, the political is personal and the personal is absurd, above all else.

Doing some DIY work on your roof, in jandals? No probs. Taking your new e-bike for a spin, aged 73? Great, you gotta stay healthy. Decide to take up jogging after your triple bypass? Makes sense.

Wanna go out for a quick surf? No way!

Selfish bastard. Stay home, safe lives.

We’re told we should feel proud of how we vanquished an invisible enemy, 66

a team of five million, shoulders against the wheel, staying home, saving lives.

Victory! But there’s something a little off, a little too self-congratulatory about the whole thing for me.

Dystopian near-future sci-fi is about the only thing I’m really qualified to talk about and believe me the parallels are nearly endless. Benevolent female leaders, deadly threats at the border, collective sacrifice, the rights of the collective over the individual, communication as control…

Only, in the books I read, it never ends with a whimper — but a bang.

It’s created unbelievably fertile ground for those that are so inclined to go looking for ghosts and vectors that don’t exist. Enter Uncle Neville.

While your Uncle Neville re-posting 5G, Bill Gates and socialist Cindy memes all over his socials may have made you cringe, at least it brought a bit of colour to the otherwise wall-to-wall yellow stripes and the 1pm party political broadcast.

And forget for a minute about his complete inability to understand radio frequencies, vaccine development and Marx. That’s irrelevant. What’s important

here is that he can still hold a contrary opinion in the public square and in extraordinary times that isn’t any small thing — long live Uncle Nev! The whole thing’s so big and complex, it can be overwhelming. I get it Neville. But instead of wasting your time searching for photos of the PM in a comrade cap (and by the way, she was the President of the International Union of Socialist Youth in 2008, lol), I’d encourage you to focus on the small lockdown wins and see how long you can keep ‘em rolling.

Mine would be: Cooking and eating With nothing to do and nowhere to be, the evening meal became the main event.

Cranking up the music and cooking with the kids is the best.

That fact that working people finally got a little recognition Yup, a doctor is definitely an essential worker, but so are supermarket workers and asparagus pickers. So kia ora to you guys — grinding it out for little more than the wage subsidy and a chance at getting sick.

Hopefully your union can leverage that good will into the living wage. If they can’t, stop paying your dues and patch over to Local 13 — they’re still holding it down.

True Colours With so many reckons flying around, it’s great to see what people thought for a change. The band Against Me sum up the spectrum pretty well on the song Baby I’m an Anarchist with the line, “You believe in authority; I believe in myself.” I don’t know if I believe in either.

Not rushing This is amazing. Where you gotta be?

Really? Why? Skateboarding Shout out to all the average dads out there re-learning kick flips.

And who knows how the second part of the year is going to go? We have an election, a ‘reeferendum’, ‘Youth in Asia’ and goodness knows what else. Let me know how it ends. I’m too busy with the kids in the kitchen to pay it much mind…

Place a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat, add a generous glug of oil and the onion.

Fry for a few minutes until it starts to soften, then add the carrot and potato, and cook for a few minutes. Add the tandoori paste and fry for a minute, stirring, then add the coconut cream, wok sauce, peanut butter, sugar and season with Man Grind Salt Blend or regular salt.

Bring to a simmer, then add the chicken and cook for about 10–12 minutes or until cooked through. Check your seasoning, adding more salt or sugar, if needed.

Remove from the heat and add a squeeze of lime, then serve with extra lime wedges, steamed rice and warm naan.
