PASTORAL LETTER ASCENTIONTIDE 2023

To the lay faithful of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham

Dear Brothers and Sisters

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshipped him; but some doubted.And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matthew 28:16-20)

As Christ ascends, his disciples realise that this is not the end but the beginning, the start of the witness of the Church in the power of the risen Christ. There was work to do. They could take courage because the risen Christ, with whom they’d been grilling and eating fish a few days before, was with the Father praying for them, and with them, as they went about the task of making disciples, baptising and teaching.

The task of those first disciples remains our task today. The primary task of the Ordinariate is to make disciples, baptise and teach. We have a distinctive part to play in what has been the mission of the Church from day one, and we can’t be reminded of that task too often.

As we celebrate Our Lord’s Ascension I’d like to invite you to get involved in a Mission Audit of your group to help it be increasingly missionary-minded and outward-looking.

Each of our groups is being asked to formulate a Mission Action Plan (MAP), a simple document which articulates a vision for the group’s growth, and the practical steps needed to move towards this. Put very simply, groups – clergy and laity together - are being invited to ask of themselves: Where are we now? Where do we want to be? What’s the best way to get there? What do we need to do now?

The answers to those questions will be different for every group, according to our different circumstances, but our asking of the questions is motivated by a common desire to share more effectively the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who have not yet heard it or forgotten it.

A MAP is a local thing. You know your group and its particular circumstances, and are invested in its life and mission, so I’m asking you to be part of the process of planning for its future. I hope that with your group pastor and fellow-group members you will respond enthusiastically and positively. It is important to understand that a MAP is not an end in itself, but a means of helping our groups to reach out to others with the Gospel and to flourish.

Group pastors have been asked to nominate a link lay person, who, with the group pastor, will receive more information about the process of formulating a MAP. Perhaps you might be that person?
