soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.”

Luke 21:30-31

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

During the Summer term, pupils will continue their journey through St. John’s Gospel. They will explore how St. John's account of the Resurrection connects back to earlier biblical narratives, revealing that in Jesus, the relationship between God and humanity is fully restored. Pupils will learn about the Christian belief in the Resurrection of Christ and the revelation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, deepening their understanding of these central beliefs. In Summer 2, pupils will explore the concept of "the common good.“ They will deepen their knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching principles, learning how these values guide Catholics in working for a fair and caring society. The children will be given opportunities to lead class worships and they will continue to explore different ways to pray, for example Visio Divina.

RSHE

Our RSHE continues to build upon the work Year 6 have already done about how our bodies are changing and developing as we go through puberty. The children will learn how babies are conceived and develop in the womb. They will learn some key facts about sexual intercourse, underpinned with the religious understanding that sexual intercourse is intended for married couples and has been designed by God. We will continue to learn about periods. We will work on the pupils transition to secondary school, covering many topics such as making new friends, time management, setting boundaries and how to look after their mental well-being.

ENGLISH

Pupils will continue to enjoy a variety of texts and authors, continuing on with our class novel, ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. We will compose writing linked to our key texts whilst revising and applying a range of spelling, punctuation and grammatical skills. We will continue to develop our editing skills and overall cohesion within our writing. As a whole class, pupils will read a range of extracts and literature relating to our topics. We will continue to analyse texts through the skills of answering word meaning, retrieval and inference questions. We will also continue to develop our ability to summarise, scrutinise and debate themes and opinions through a range of texts and questions.

MATHS

During the Summer term, the pupils will continue to practice their arithmetic skills. Year 6 pupils will also solve real life problems through investigations to use and apply mathematical skills. Pupils will demonstrate their mathematical reasoning and understanding by explaining how they solve problems.

SCIENCE

Our final science topic will be ‘Light.’ We will investigate how light travels in straight lines, how light can change direction and how it is possible for us to see. The children will learn that objects can be seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye. The pupils will understand that shadows have the same shape as the object that cast them because light travels in straight lines. We will use a variety of scientific skills including questioning, observing and recording.

GEOGRAPHY

The pupils will be learning about settlements in the summer term and how and why they were formed. The children will describe how a settlement is influenced by geographical features. Pupils will be able to document how Staines has been a settlement since Saxon times and describe how land use has changed and developed over time.

ART/DT

This term, Year 6 will be focussing on the skill of sketching and then painting a self-portrait. in their art lessons. They will be looking at the work of Kehinde Wiley and Lynette YiadomBoakye to guide them. The children will consider the mood, colours and hues they would like to use for their background and portrait to convey something specific about themselves. In our DT lessons we will be creating recycled tie-dye bags. The pupils will draw a design to measure, cut and assemble fabric to create a sustainable bag. They will learn a range of tie-dye techniques to decorate their bags.

MUSIC

This term, the children will be introduced via The Royal Opera House, to the music of Carmen. The pupils will sing a broad range of songs, using their voices with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. The songs will include those that involve syncopated rhythms, as part of a choir, with a sense of ensemble and performance.
