Joy Excellence Service

“As soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.”

Luke 21:30-31

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Our first unit of study is called, “To the Ends of the Earth.” We will share the following scripture

• The road to Emmaus (Lk 24:13-35)

• Promise of the Spirit and the Ascension (Acts 1:1-11)

• Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4)

The children will learn what happens after Jesus’ resurrection up until the arrival of the Holy Spirit. We will discuss how the church celebrates the Ascension and Pentecost and focus on the words of the “Glory Be” prayer.

Our second topic, “Dialogue and Encounter” highlights the relationship and similarities between Catholicism and other Christian faiths. The children will then learn about the Jewish faith – predominantly about the Jewish belief in one God and the Torah.

RSHE

In our module, "Created to live in the Community", we will be investigating the relationship between the individual and the wider world. Initially, we will share the story of the Good Samaritan and discuss the Trinity to demonstrate how God wants us to be loving towards one another. After half term, we will learn about different local and global communities and explore the rights and responsibilities of belonging to them.

ENGLISH

This term, we will continue to focus on how to punctuate our sentences correctly and how to read back our writing to check for errors and omissions. The children will explore how to write a detailed descriptions and recounts, a narrative (story) and a simple newspaper report. Throughout the term, we will be using different strategies to begin to improve writing stamina.

In phonics, we will be revising all graphemes and phonemes ready for the Phonic Screening Check in June. The children will perfect their segmenting and blending skills to decode unknown real and pseudo (alien) words.

After the check, we will consolidate our knowledge of alternative pronunciations of graphemes to apply when reading or writing. There will be a greater emphasis on spelling this term and in particular, working on spelling the Year 1 common exception words correctly from memory.

MATHS

This term, we will be learning about grouping, sharing and making arrays as part of an introduction to multiplication and division. We will be finding halves and quarters of objects and amounts before moving on to recognising, comparing and partitioning numbers to 100.

Later in the term, we will be reading and making o'clock and half past times on analogue clocks and then exploring position and direction. As part of learning about money, we will be recognising coins, finding different ways of making totals using various coins and solving simple word problems.

SCIENCE

Our science topic this term is "Plants".

We will be observing, classifying, and investigating different kinds of plants and trees. We will learn to identify and name familiar plants and trees as well as describing their different features. We will be labelling their parts and investigating how they contribute to a plant's development.

ln addition, we will be completing our study of seasonal change and explaining how seasons influence and affect plant life and growth.

GEOGRAPHY

Initially, we will be consolidating our knowledge of the four nations of the UK and naming their capital cities. We will focus on identifying geographical features, such as rivers, mountains, cities and coasts using different mapping media.

Our complimentary area of learning is a unit of work on weather. We will be collecting information on rainfall, temperature and cloud cover and then devising symbols to discuss and report this to others. Using this information, we will be able to identify the weather and climate prevalent in the UK.

ART/DT

Our focus this term in art is painting. We will be exploring the techniques and movements related to expressionism and realism. Our featured artist is Alma Thomas. When appreciating art pieces, we will discuss what we like or dislike, identify patterns and textures used and review colour choices.

ln DT, we will be completing our unit of work about frame structures before embarking on the cooking and nutrition unit. We will discuss which foods are healthy and explore their origin. The children will discuss where their food comes from and how it is grown. Whilst cooking or preparing food, we will learn how to prepare food safely using simple tools.

MUSIC

In music, we will be following a sequence of music lessons designed by The Royal Opera House. The children are learning the story of the Magic Flute and becoming familiar with the characters in it. The children learn different techniques to help them sing different arias and accompany them with appropriate actions and movements.

In addition, the children will enjoy weekly hymn practice sessions led by our music specialist teacher, Mr Foster.

P.E.

This term, we will be learning basic skills and game play associated with netball, basketball and tennis. We will practise sending and receiving balls, working on aim and accuracy. We will learn under and over-arm throwing techniques and improve our reaction and response times. After half term, we will be practising our running and throwing skills in readiness for sports day.

ln our gymnastics, we will be concentrating on floor work and maintaining static balances. We will build on our previous learning to perfect more complex balances and link them in a co-ordinated manner.

COMPUTING

Our computing lessons this term will explore advertising on TV, radio and in print and then word processing. We will be discussing what the purpose of adverts are and identify the different elements used (images, sounds, settings, characters etc.) This will enable us to design our own advert for TV, radio or print. We will learn what word processing is and what it can do. We will focus on using the computer keyboard to add and remove text and using the cursor and the toolbar to change how it looks.

Turn static files into dynamic content formats.
