PSHE at Our Lady of the Rosary

Joy Excellence Service For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

CURRICULUM STATEMENT PSHE is central to the personal, social and spiritual development of the pupils of Our Lady of the Rosary. It equips children with the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives, rooted in our Catholic faith. Through a nurturing and inclusive approach, pupils are encouraged to develop self-awareness, resilience and empathy, while learning to build positive relationships and make responsible choices. Guided by Gospel values, PSHE helps pupils to understand their place within God’s creation, respect the dignity of all people, and grow as confident, compassionate individuals who contribute positively to their community.

SUBJECT RATIONALE Our PSHE curriculum challenges children to reflect on their understanding of themselves, their relationships, and their role within society, while exploring themes such as health, wellbeing, citizenship, diversity and culture. Pupils are supported to develop a strong moral compass and a growing awareness of how their choices impact themselves and others. We expose pupils to a wide range of real-life scenarios, role models and experiences, both historical and contemporary, fostering thoughtful discussion, empathy and respect for different viewpoints. Through this, children learn to listen, reflect, and communicate effectively. We believe that every child is made in the image of God and possesses unique value and dignity. Our PSHE opportunities – whether through dedicated lessons, collective worship, discussions, or wholeschool initiatives – nurture pupils’ emotional wellbeing, resilience and confidence. Most importantly, PSHE teaches our children to value themselves and others, make positive choices, participate responsibly in their communities, and celebrate their unique God-given gifts.

WHAT DOES AN OLRS PSHE LESSON LOOK LIKE? Children will be actively engaged in PSHE learning for much of the lesson. They could be: Taking part in class discussions and circle time Sharing thoughts, feelings and opinions in a safe and respectful environment Engaging in role-play and drama to explore real-life situations Working collaboratively in pairs or groups to solve problems Using age-appropriate scenarios, stories, videos and resources to explore themes such as friendships, emotions, safety, diversity and wellbeing. All of this will be supported by the sensitive, nurturing and guided involvement of adults.

In PSHE lessons, pupils will be given meaningful and stimulating starting points. These may include stories, case studies, moral dilemmas, pictures, videos, current events or questions linked to real-life experiences. Children will be given opportunities to explore ideas, express emotions, consider different viewpoints and practise decision-making skills. Through discussion and reflection, PSHE lessons will embrace a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and cultures, helping pupils to develop empathy, resilience and respect for themselves and others.

ASSESSMENT Assessment in PSHE is ongoing and primarily formative, focusing on pupils’ personal development, understanding and application of skills rather than formal testing. Teachers assess learning through observation, discussion, pupil reflection and participation in activities such as role-play, group work and class dialogue. Children are encouraged to self-reflect and express their thoughts and feelings in age-appropriate ways, enabling teachers to gauge progress over time. Assessment informs future planning and ensures teaching is responsive to pupils’ needs, while recognising that outcomes in PSHE are individual and developmental, and rooted in nurturing confidence, resilience and respect for self and others.

ENRICHMENT Pupils in all year groups have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of PSHE-focused events and themed activities throughout the school year. These include Pupil Parliament Elections, which run across the school to develop understanding of democracy, citizenship and British Values, and Future Focus Fortnight, where pupils explore job roles, careers, aspirations and pathways appropriate to their age and stage of development. Older pupils participate in events such as Enterprise Week, applying economic understanding through business planning, budgeting and teamwork, while pupils in Years 4–6 take part in Bikeability training to develop independence, safety awareness and responsibility. Wholeschool and class-based events linked to digital literacy, wellbeing, life skills and economic education ensure that PSHE learning is purposeful, progressive and rooted in real-life experiences, helping pupils to grow as confident, responsible and resilient members of society

PUPIL VOICE I really enjoy PSHE lessons because we get to talk about our feelings and listen to other people. It helps me understand myself better and makes me feel more confident. PSHE is really interesting. I like learning about real-life situations and what choices I could make. I enjoy working in groups and hearing different opinions. I like PSHE because it helps me learn how to be a good friend and how to stay safe. It makes me feel happy when we talk and help each other in class.

SUCCESSES • Being able to cycle independently and safely to school. • Interviewing our local MPs and visiting parliament. • Having an attitude of anything is possible. If I cannot do something now, I will persevere and learn how to do it!
