BEING BACK AS A GUEST EDITOR for the fall issue of OUR
HOMES has been a wonderful reminder that some places never really leave you. It’s a lot like visiting an old friend – the welcome is warm, the conversation comes easily, and it’s genuinely fun to reconnect. It’s always an honour to connect with homeowners and home professionals to share their stories and offer readers advice, inspiration and an opportunity to admire beautiful spaces. That’s exactly what we do in this issue. Local experts share their top tips on decorating, design and home maintenance. We tour a hot tub store that is so much more. We visit a truly luxurious condominium development, a designer-inspired Glebe home and a home reno that infuses style in just the right places. Although it’s the new year that usually signals a fresh start, I like to associate new beginnings with fall too. Beyond back to school and back to routine, it’s the perfect season to transform your home. Cosy feels good again, and you are sharp-eyed and ready to tackle to-do lists after the long summer break. I hope you find just the inspiration you need to get started in the pages of this issue, or while visiting with an old friend this season.

The Return of
THE ROOM
Designer Tamarisk McNalty Stephens shares her ideas.
The open floor plan has reigned supreme for decades, but a quiet shift is happening. Homeowners are beginning to crave boundaries again, leading to a resurgence of defined spaces. However, because few want to return to entirely closed-plan living, “micro-zoning” has emerged as a movement that creates distinct areas tailored to specific activities.
The Everyday Drawbacks
The Origins of the Open Plan
Visual Clutter: Whether it’s dishes on the island, toys or fitness gear scattered across the floor, maintaining a sense of calm becomes a constant battle.
In older homes, room sizes were largely dictated by structural limitations; load-bearing walls were necessary to support floors and roofs. Yet, these divisions also served a lifestyle purpose. The kitchen was purely utilitarian and tucked out of sight. Dining was a daily ritual celebrated in a dedicated room, allowing families to break bread without the visual distraction of dirty dishes. Parlours were designed specifically for guests and often outfitted with fancy furniture for conversation (not for sprawling comfort – long before screens dominated our attention). As residential engineering progressed, steel beams and engineered lumber enabled larger spans with fewer interior supports. The open-concept main floor was born. It quickly became the preferred choice for modern homeowners because it felt expansive, allowed natural light to spill from wall to wall, maximized flow when entertaining and let parents supervise young children while preparing meals. 14 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
HOWEVER, LIVING IN A HOUSE WITH LIMITED WALLS HAS REVEALED SIGNIFICANT EVERYDAY CHALLENGES: Acoustic Issues: Sound travels easily, especially with vaulted ceilings and hard surfaces. The noise of a television, a kitchen blender or a remote work call can quickly become distracting.
The Design Dilemma: Testing bold design ideas is tricky. Without natural architectural breaks, it is difficult to know where to start and stop a beautiful wallcovering, a bold paint colour or a panelling detail without committing to the entire space. Limited Privacy: Finding a quiet nook for reading, working or unwinding is incredibly tough when every functional zone bleeds into the next.
Enter the Hybrid Home: Best of Both Worlds We aren’t completely closing up our homes again. Instead, residential design is moving toward a clever compromise: a hybrid balance that maintains the airy connectedness of an open plan while recapturing the intimacy and order of defined rooms.
Large Pocket Doors: These allow a space to feel wide open during a party or cosy and closed off for a movie night while improving acoustics. Architectural Delineation: Ceiling treatments, cased openings and arch details visually identify a room’s purpose without constructing a solid partition. A large twoway fireplace or a change in flooring height or material can also define space. Furniture, Millwork, etc.: Fixed architectural features like double-sided bookcases, wooden slats or laser-cut designs. Freestanding pieces like decorative privacy screens or a beautiful handmade textile hung strategically can all create intentional transitions in space.
The Power of Micro-Zoning For those not looking to renovate, microzoning offers a clever alternative. It is about being highly intentional and assigning a dedicated purpose to every corner. To start, determine which daily needs are currently unmet for your family. By creating targeted solutions for those gaps, your home will instantly feel calmer, more organized and more harmonious. Microzoning gives purpose to underutilized square footage and positively influences daily routines. It can resolve common frustrations by establishing distinct zones for remote work, reading, hobbies, children’s toys or intimate conversation. If you have just a six-by-six-foot space, you can easily create a functional vignette. Layer in a small area rug, a floor lamp, a piece of furniture (such as an antique desk or a small tea table), a comfortable chair and a piece of art. This simple setup can serve as a hidden work-from-home station in the corner of your living room by day, or a quiet bedroom retreat in the evening when the TV in the main living area gets noisy. Whether sparked by the necessity of remote work or a desire for cosiness and more personalized character, delineating space proves that a home functions best when its layout matches the true nuances of our daily lives. HOW SPACE INFLUENCES MOOD, PRODUCTIVITY & CONNECTION
People rarely describe their homes in terms of square footage, cabinetry styles or paint colours. Instead, they talk about how their homes make them feel. They mention the kitchen that somehow makes Monday mornings less stressful, the reading chair they gravitate toward at the end of a long day or the dining room where conversations linger long after the plates have been cleared. Those responses aren’t accidental. That’s because our spaces influence our emotions, energy levels, habits and relationships in ways we don’t always recognize outright. The key to designing a home is how people will move through it. When circulation is awkward, it shows up in small but constant ways: a tight squeeze past an open dishwasher, a hallway that slows everyone down during busy mornings or a shared workspace that always seems to be in someone’s way. Over time, those moments add up. When movement feels natural, the house supports daily life instead of interrupting it. Some homeowners think they’ve outgrown their square footage, when what they’re really reacting to is a layout that no longer reflects how they live. Reworking the floor plan from the ground up, clarifying the separation between public and private areas and reorganizing how key rooms relate to one another will shift how a home functions on a day-to-day basis. The change isn’t necessarily about adding more space, but making better use of the space we already have. That idea carries through to how rooms visually relate to one another. Sightlines quietly guide how a home is experienced. A partial view into the next space, a piece of artwork aligned with an entry or a softly illuminated seating area at the end of a corridor improves a home’s orientation. These moments of visual connection make a home feel more legible and intuitive, encouraging movement without ever feeling forced. Continued on page 22

Design also influences how people spend time together. Open-concept living has dominated residential design for years, but removing walls doesn’t automatically create closeness. Some of the most successful gathering spaces include smaller zones that invite people in without demanding everyone’s attention at once. In one home, an underused formal living room became a library and sitting area connected to the kitchen through wide-cased openings. Deep lounge chairs, bookshelves and soft lighting transformed it into the room everyone migrated toward. The room found its purpose because it reflected how the family genuinely wanted to spend their time. Lighting is another key element that can completely transform how a home feels. Whenever possible, prioritize natural light by maintaining clear sightlines to windows and select window treatments that soften rather than block daylight. Artificial lighting deserves the same level of consideration. Many homes rely on recessed ceiling fixtures that provide brightness but little atmosphere. Layered lighting changes everything. Under-cabinet lighting supports food preparation, table lamps bring warmth to living spaces and bedside sconces create a more comfortable environment for reading and relaxation. Lighting is often the unseen element that shapes the emotional experience of a
space. It can influence mood, support wellbeing, enhance productivity and foster connection within our homes. Natural light brings energy and balance, while thoughtfully layered lighting introduces warmth, intimacy and sophistication as the day evolves. When carefully considered, lighting becomes far more than a functional necessity. It is a powerful design element that enhances how we live, feel and connect within our homes. Of course, texture, sound and colour all shape how a home feels. Spaces dominated by stone, glass and other hard surfaces can be beautiful, but they often amplify noise and feel less inviting. A home with soaring ceilings and extensive tile is easily warmed up with wool rugs, upholstered dining chairs and lined drapery to soften the acoustics enough to make family conversations noticeably easier. Colour is equally personal. While some people are energized by rich, saturated hues, others prefer quieter palettes with subtle contrast. Most successful spaces aren’t dictated by trends. They reflect the personalities and preferences of those who call the space home. Interior design shapes more than appearances. At its best, it creates experiences and an environment that people want to return to at the end of the day. OH

Katie and Mitch purchased the home in 2013 with the intention of renovating it. “The home was well-kept, but it was dark, outdated and didn’t fit our style,” Katie explains. To prepare for the renovation, she followed local designers on social media, and that’s how she discovered CPI. “They really stood out as a company that aligned with our style,” she says. It turns out CPI was their first and only call. “Natalie came to our home to discuss the project and we just clicked. We communicated well, and she really seemed to understand our vision. The consultation went so well that we didn’t even contact anyone else. We knew this was who we wanted to work with,” says Katie. Natalie believes the secret to successful client meetings is knowing the right questions to ask to understand not only the homeowners’ design style, but also how they want their homes to function in daily life. “I want to make them feel comfortable talking about their home so I can uncover what would make them fall in love with it again,” she explains. “The catalyst for this project was the kitchen renovation. They wanted to remove some walls to open the space, bring in more natural light and add an island to make the kitchen more functional,” Natalie explains. “But when you take down walls, you have to think about the flooring, and when you change the flooring, you have to consider the staircase, and then the flooring on the second floor is also affected.” Continued on page 29 26 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6

“WHEN EVERYONE INVOLVED HAS ALIGNED PRIORITIES, IT HELPS THE PROJECT RUN SMOOTHLY AND STAY ON SCHEDULE.” –NATALIE COX 28 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
This home demonstrates the power of design continuity for a clean aesthetic, including white oak flooring that eases transitions, and matching bulkheads that subtly define the various spaces. OPPOSITE: A must-have for these homeowners was an expansive island to anchor the kitchen.
Thankfully, Katie and Mitch were on board with the additional modifications. The results speak for themselves. The first thing you see when you enter the home is the stunning curved staircase in the foyer, which serves as a beautiful focal point and sets the tone for the rest of the home. “I was grateful that they understood why so many pieces of the home needed to be touched upon when the initial goal was to update the kitchen and dining room,” adds Natalie. The stair treads and railings were redone to match the new white oak engineered flooring that runs through both floors of the home. Likewise, the kitchen island and bulkheads are now clad in white oak that complements the flooring, creating continuity throughout the main living spaces.
Katie requested a “neutral backdrop without a lot of colour that I would be tied to in years to come,” but she loves the pops of colour CPI added with blue tile in the main bathroom and the pretty blue cabinets in the mudroom/laundry room. “I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of them,” she says. Looking back on the project’s smooth progression, Katie says, “We can’t give enough credit to our builder, Erik Damsbaek and his team at Damsbaek Carpentry. Every single step of the project was on time or even ahead of schedule. We were only out of the house for four months, and there were no delays or major surprises.” In fact, the renovation was completed on the exact date Katie and Mitch had been given at the outset of the project. Natalie credits very thorough planning as the key to CPI’s many successful projects. “We provide comprehensive plans that cover every detail – right down to the grout colour and tile pattern. Everything is clearly indicated on the plans so once construction begins, the contractor has minimal questions,” she explains. “And we only work with the best. Erik, Jonathan, Austin and Nick from Damsbaek are incredibly organized and share our commitment to customer service. When everyone involved has aligned priorities, it helps the project to run smoothly and stay on schedule.” After working together for over a decade, Natalie and her business partner Megan Patterson have perfected their process. Both began at CPI as design consultants and have grown with the company to become co-owners. Natalie is president and principal designer, while Megan is CEO and director of design, overseeing everything from business operations to quality control. LEFT: Water-inspired tiles with pops of blue are perfect for a bathroom and are among the homeowners’ favourite features. BELOW: The homeowners wanted a flexible, mostly neutral backdrop to serve as a foundation for their style for years to come.
Their successful partnership has also led them to acquire a custom cabinetry company, which they rebranded Cox Patterson Home Cabinetry. Because custom cabinets are a key element in almost every design project they undertake, owning a cabinet company was a natural fit. Cox Patterson Home Cabinetry provides tailored cabinetry solutions for CPI’s projects and other designers and contractors. Now that Katie and her family are back in their newly renovated home, she has nothing but praise for CPI and Damsbaek Carpentry. “We’re so happy with the end results and the entire process that we plan to use them again when we’re ready to renovate our basement,” she says. “Natalie really listened to our needs and wants and put that into a design that turned out even better than I imagined. The entire project has exceeded our expectations.” OH

The Times They Are A-Changin’ –BOB DYLAN
BIRDING

Bay-breasted Warbler
Most people start birding naked. But it’s not what you’re thinking. For whatever reason, someone came up with the term “naked birding” to describe birding without binoculars. It also includes birding without cameras, field guides, Merlin, eBird, spotting scopes or a phone loaded with bird apps and notifications set to bird alerts. In other words, without the full inventory of paraphernalia today’s birders don’t leave home without.
You were likely birding naked the first time you noticed a bird. You weren’t intentionally looking for birds, but one day something caught your eye. You heard a song, noticed a movement, spotted a bird that happened to land nearby. You gave it a good once-over with your bare eyes. Perhaps there was something about this raw look that made you want to know what kind of bird you were looking at. It was your first time being a bare-naked birder.
NAKED FEEDER WATCH If the birding bug does bite or even nibbles at you gently, you can often continue to pursue birds nakedly by putting up a feeder. You don’t need binoculars to watch birds just outside your window. Binoculars are, in fact, sometimes a hindrance, as their narrow field of view minimizes the wider field of activity. While some species sit and sample the seeds, others beeline in from any direction and grab-and-go with a single seed. Sorting out the feeding styles helps you understand the species. Chickadees and nuthatches zip in and out; the jays, goldfinches and woodpeckers stay put for a bit. Soon, even without binoculars, you’ll be familiar with at least 10 species. Continued on page 36

NAKED HIKING
BACK WHEN
Apparently, there actually is a Naked Hiking Day, celebrated universally on the summer solstice, but this is not what we’re talking about here. Birding naked on your daily walk or weekly hike is a whole different thing. You’ll be au naturel in the birding sense – fully clothed – but toting no more than your water bottle. If your walk is on a trail, you’ll enjoy a range of bird watching and hearing along the way. You’ll be surrounded by songs from birds perched in trees, all within close enough range that you can usually identify them with your naked eye or tuned-in ears. I still remember finding, without binoculars, my very first, very beautiful Bay-breasted Warbler on a walk. It was a personal best for me as a serious newbie birder!
Birding back in the day didn’t look the same as it does today. Then, birders sallied forth with gear that amounted to nothing more than binoculars and a field guide. They were partially-naked birders! A bird was identified by flipping through your Peterson guide and comparing it with other birds on the page. Birdsong was learned from a vinyl LP record album; rare bird alerts were a phone pyramid – the finder phoned two people, who phoned two people, etc. (am I really that old). Province-wide bird news came from a weekly column in The Globe and Mail. To hear birdsong better, you cupped your hands around your ears. No one carried a long-lensed camera.
NAKED DRIVING
But things have changed. The LP record progressed to a tape, then a CD and now a variety of apps on your phone. Provincially, rare bird alerts were gleaned from the always-outdated, Ontario-wide hotline and an email listserv. Alerts now come from any number of sources: real-time WhatsApp, Signal, Messenger, Discord groups and eBird postings, each with its own urgent notification sound on your ever-present cell phone. The bird ID tools, tech and aids at your disposal go way beyond the seminaked birding of not that long ago. The learning curve was much different, too. Birds could not be ID’ed via multiple pictures fired off in the field and later pulled up on your computer screen for a slow and studied identification. You couldn’t ask for “ID please” on Facebook (and receive random, sometimes ridiculous suggestions by the way). Birds heard in the field were not recorded and instantly identified by Merlin.
AND NOW
PHOTO: LUCIE DESJARDIN
PHOTO: LYNNE RICHARDSON
Some of your best naked birding can be from your car while on a country drive, a road trip, driving to work or simply running errands. With binoculars left at home or tucked away in the back seat, and eyes (mostly) on the road, it’s still easy enough to catch good glimpses of birds as you roll along. On rural drives, roadside telephone poles are great for perching Red-tailed Hawks, or in winter, a most coveted Snowy Owl (don’t park below the pole). Flocks of various species congregate on the telephone wires. Bluebirds, sparrows and meadowlarks perch on fenceposts. Roll down your window and hear a Bobolink’s burbling medley from the pasture fields. And if you dare to quickly put your eyes to the skies, you’ll likely spot a teetering Turkey Vulture or a soaring hawk up in the blue.

birding
PROS AND CONS Perhaps back then, the partially-naked birders took more time to study the bird, its habitat, activity and field marks. Perhaps they listened more intently to the song to commit it and the sighting to memory for later identification back home, when tapes and reference books were consulted. Or does today’s instant ID gratification of a bird’s species and song build your birding knowledge and skills faster and more accurately? For one, these techy tools certainly open the field of birding to the wider population, given the amazing popularity of Merlin and other birding apps. And they make the introduction to the joys of birding simple and accessible. But birding naked heightens the acuity of your most essential birding skills – your eyes and ears. With no binoculars, camera, Merlin or identification apps, you simply notice a bird, focus on what it looks like and what it’s doing, what habitat it’s hanging in and how small, medium or large it is. This lays a solid foundation for birding observation skills. A quick and easy ID pop-up from Merlin is only a start; continued study through observation and listening turns you into a real birder. Really, nothing can replace the experienced eye or ear. And just like the days of naked birding, going birding with an experienced birder is still one of the best ways to learn more. Regardless of whether you’re birding naked or fully teched out, whatever your style of birding, as a current popular meme says: “Don’t ever let anyone talk you out of that 30-minute birding walk. Those two hours could be the best five hours of your day!” But please, keep your clothes on. OH

Its bright, spacious showroom features an impressive selection of Beachcomber and Wellis hot tubs, swim spas, Leisurecraft saunas and Visscher gazebos, along with water care products and accessories. THREE SHOWROOMS, ONE DESTINATION Bringing these complementary businesses together creates a unique shopping experience, allowing homeowners to plan both their indoor and outdoor spaces in one visit. While Kanata Hot Tubs has been serving Ottawa’s west end since 2022, its roots run much deeper. Sister company Kanata Paint evolved from a successful family-owned home renovation and building supply business that has served the community for decades, explains manager Gabe Rheault. “We carried everything needed to build or renovate a home – from trusses and building materials to paint, hot tubs, gazebos and other home improvement products,” says Gabe. “When we expanded, we purchased two Benjamin Moore paint stores and then saw an opportunity to grow into the hot tub and wellness industry. Our experience across multiple areas of home improvement allows us to provide customers with knowledgeable advice and quality products for both their homes and outdoor living spaces.”
WELLNESS AT HOME The move into hot tubs and saunas reflects the growing trend toward wellness-focused living. More homeowners are creating spaces dedicated to relaxation, recovery and overall well-being. Gabe has experienced those benefits firsthand. A fitness enthusiast, he incorporates sauna sessions into his daily recovery routine and understands the value they bring beyond simple relaxation. “A hot tub and sauna are more than luxuries – they’re investments in your health and quality of life,” he says. “Whether it’s reducing stress, improving sleep, relieving sore muscles or spending quality time with family, these products become part of your daily routine.” OH

THE FREEDOM OF
LUXURY LIVING 44 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6

Many homeowners are lured by the idea of moving to a condominium – turnkey living and right-sized spaces, usually in coveted, walkable locations. However, many struggle to envision leaving a single-family home, especially one with custom and luxury finishes, without feeling as though they’re compromising. The boutique-style 1451 Wellington, The Residences at Island Park Drive, bridges that gap in a meaningful way. There are 79 units spanning 12 floors, ranging in size from 750 to 6,000 square feet, and “they are all custom,” says luxury real estate developer Sam Mizrahi, president of Mizrahi Developments. “No two are alike.” The mid-rise building is more like a collection of bespoke residences instead of a traditional condominium building. Continued on page 47

TOP RIGHT: Design takes a cue from hospitality, with details in common spaces intended to make an impression, including marble floors and oversize mouldings. OPPOSITE BOTTOM: No two units here are alike, making 1451 Wellington feel like a collection of residences as opposed to a traditional condominium building.
46 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
In fact, that’s the underlying theme that drove the design of this building. The experience and sense of empowerment that comes with living in a home isn’t limited to single-family residences. Rather, it’s the thoughtful design details that create a lifestyle around freedom and choice. “When you walk into these units, you think that you are in a house, as opposed to an apartment,” Sam says. It’s all about nuance and combining small elements for big impact. Luxe finishes, varied ceiling heights, thick mouldings and thoughtful layouts evoke the comfort of a traditional home. The elegant condominium complex draws architectural inspiration from some of Ottawa’s most iconic historical building styles, complete with a limestone exterior and copper mansard roof with a European, old-world vibe. It fits naturally into Ottawa’s streetscape, paying homage to landmark civic buildings such as the National Gallery of Canada and Library and Archives Canada. Considered a gateway to Westboro and Wellington West, 1451 Wellington sits perched in an enviable location on the corner of Wellington St. W. and Island Park Dr. The condo development is heavily influenced by hospitality and experiential design, which is a major trend in residential development today. “Hospitality is bred into the soul of this building,” says Sam, noting it shapes a resident’s daily routine and supports hosting guests in a way that feels like entertaining in a single-family home. Aesthetically, design principles used by hotels and spas appear throughout the building. For example, high-end hotels prioritize spaces like the lobby, because they set the tone. The same can be said for the lobby and hallways at 1451 Wellington, with striking, oversize chandeliers and marble floors. Resort-style amenities also include a bright, fully equipped gym, saltwater lap pool, valet parking with a car wash and a 24-hour concierge, while the guest suite rivals any luxury boutique hotel room. Several features help owners host guests comfortably and make a lasting impression. The entertainment suite feels just like home, complete with a sleek fireplace, adjoining dining room and catering kitchen with ample prep space and storage. Each condo, meanwhile, is outfitted for gas barbecues, unusual for a condo building, which makes it easy to host a casual grill party right from your unit. Continued on page 50

The model suite hints at the design and decorative possibilities for these units. Striking, dynamic stone sets the aesthetic tone in the kitchen and primary bath. The kitchen features smoky, moody counters and backsplash, while the primary bath features a deep soaker tub wrapped in dramatic stone that extends up a wall. Elsewhere, the home office, living area and bedroom are undeniably bright, clearly designed to incorporate natural light that amplifies the sense of space.

Each residence has a large balcony. This unit offers access from the primary bedroom. BELOW: The primary bath embraces spa-inspired design to create an at-home retreat.
Ultimately, from its architecture to its interiors and amenities, 1451 Wellington embodies the comforts of detached-home living in a more compact, lifestyle-friendly footprint. Its thoughtful approach anticipates how residents will move through daily routines and answers with design-based solutions. OH
in the kitchen Fall is arguably one of the most delicious seasons, and as we move into cooler months, we start to crave richer, deeper flavours and different cooking methods than we do during warmer seasons. In order to take full advantage of seasonal eating during fall, you must know what’s in season, as well as the ideal cooking methods for this time of year.
WHAT’S IN SEASON FROM OCTOBER TO DECEMBER IN ONTARIO: Fruits: cranberries, pears, plums Vegetables: artichokes, beans, beets, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, swiss chard, fennel, garlic, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkins, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes, turnips Produce available year-round: apples, greenhouse strawberries, mushrooms, carrots, greenhouse lettuce, greenhouse peppers, greenhouse tomatoes, greenhouse cucumbers

FALL EATING

STO RY BA I L EY F R AN K LYN
Fire. Art. Passion.
WHAT’S AT PEAK NUTRITION? During the fall, recently harvested produce that has only travelled a short distance is at its peak nutritional value. Therefore, look for fruits and vegetables that are locally grown in Ontario, greenhouse-grown and/or are in season. Cucumbers, tomatoes and mushrooms, once considered summer-only staples, are now available year-round thanks to advances in greenhouse growing. If something has travelled a long distance to get to your grocery store, chances are it was harvested days or even weeks ago, and its nutritional value has been declining since then. Look for produce that’s local to Ontario or buy directly from the growers at farmers’ markets. Now that we know what’s in season, we can discuss the best cooking methods for these foods. During fall and winter, we naturally move away from lighter, brighter ingredients and cooking methods, embracing warmer flavours and slower preparations. Roasting: an easy and flavourful way to cook almost any seasonal vegetable. Roasting adds flavour by browning and caramelizing the produce’s natural sugars and creates a crispy texture. At its most basic, roasting vegetables requires oil, salt, pepper and an oven set to a higher temperature (usually around 400°F). However, you can get as creative as you like with flavours by trying different herbs and spices. Slow cooking: a great way to cook those hearty, seasonal root vegetables and tougher cuts of meat. It’s a cooking method that slowly cooks food over a longer period. It includes methods like braising and stewing, as well as recipes like pot roasts. Ideal for fall and winter when you want something warm and flavourful and have the time (and desire) to get something on the stove in the morning and let it simmer all day. Grilling: cooking on the barbecue is great any time of year. It’s a simple way to highlight the natural flavours of seasonal vegetables (or fruits) and meats without adding too many other ingredients. Similar to roasting, grilling adds depth of flavour through browning and caramelization, which is why you don’t need to do much to have your grilled food taste good. To prevent vegetables from falling through the grates, try skewering them. This is perfect for mushrooms, artichokes and greenhouse peppers. OH

WHAT’S TRENDING?

According to Lorenzo Abdulla, managing director and co-owner of Rume, top trends this season include custom drapery and sheers, textured fabrics, ripplefold styles on sleek ceiling tracks and Euro pleats. Also popular are Roman and natural woven shades, because shoppers love the added texture and detail, as well as classic roller shades with premium fabrics. Rume’s specialized blackout systems are in demand for their ability to improve sleep.

RUME INTERIORS Family-owned Rume Interiors was established in 2018. The window treatment store offers premium custom blinds, custom drapery, shades and shutters, along with in-house design consultations, installation and servicing. The team specializes in finding solutions for difficult or unusually shaped windows, along with motorization and home automation.
STYLE TIPS “Window treatments influence how large a room feels and create visual balance,” says Lorenzo. Floor-toceiling drapery, for example, will make the ceiling appear higher. “They reinforce a luxury aesthetic by framing the view, enhancing natural light, improving acoustics and tying together the colours, textures and proportions of the entire space,” he says. Andrew’s work is popular with homeowners as a way to display their connection to cottage life and the Canadian landscape. In addition to original artwork, Andrew offers commissioned paintings, studio visits by appointment and participates in exhibitions and local studio tours throughout Eastern Ontario.
THE POWER OF ART AS DÉCOR “Original artwork often becomes the emotional centre of a room. It draws people in, starts conversations and creates a sense of warmth and personality that furniture alone can’t achieve,” says Andrew. He notes that paintings work to establish mood in a space and can reflect the homeowner’s own story and experiences.
FINDING YOUR STYLE Approach art from a feeling-first perspective. The artwork you love should make you feel something every time you walk into the room, so focus on places and experiences that bring you joy, over decorative qualities. “Buy what you connect with emotionally. Original art is something you’ll live with for years, so choosing a piece that tells your story will always outlast the latest decorating trend,” he says. 60 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6

WATER BATH Water bath canning is the more beginnerfriendly form of at-home canning and doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment. You need clean glass jars with new lids, a large saucepot with a lid, a rack for your jars to rest on, a jar lifter, funnel, spoon, ladle, paring knife and high-quality fruit and vegetables. It’s a lower temperature process compared to pressure canning, but the combination of heat and time destroys bacteria, yeast, mould and other microorganisms that may cause spoilage or illness. Water bath canning is ideal for high-acidity foods and recipes that call for an acid, such as vinegar, citric acid or lemon juice. These include jams and jellies, salsas, pickles and some tomatoes.
PRESSURE
Beginner’s Guide to
CANNING & PICKLING ST O RY BAI LEY FRAN KLY N
Pressure canning uses a special tool called a pressure canner (not to be confused with a pressure cooker) to raise the boiling point of water to 240°F, which is crucial for destroying potential food-borne bacteria. This method of canning is the only safe way to can low-acid foods such as meat, vegetables, fish and some tomatoes. Once you’ve got everything canned and cooled, it’s best to store your jars in a cool, dark, dry place. For the best quality, it’s recommended that canned products be consumed within a year. And if you ever notice a jar is improperly sealed, the lid is bloated, or the colour is off, err on the side of caution and discard it.
PICKLING Canning and pickling are great ways to enjoy the flavours of summer year-round and reduce food waste by preserving provisions for later. If you’re new to the process, it’s surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it, but there are some important things to note to ensure the end product is safe to consume. Canning is a way to preserve food using two different methods: water bath canning and pressure canning. Heat is used to prevent natural spoilage and potential food-borne illness by destroying microorganisms and other potential contaminants. Air is driven out of the jars during heating, and a vacuum seal forms as they cool, preventing air or microorganisms from entering once the lids are on. 262| |ourhomes ourhomesF AF AL LL L2 02 20 62 6
Now let’s talk about pickling. Most people think of dill pickles when they think of pickling, but technically anything can be pickled – jalapeno peppers, beets, green beans, asparagus and carrots are a few examples. Quick pickling is very easy and doesn’t require canning as long as you keep the jars refrigerated. All you need are clean jars, fresh vegetables, a brine (typically a water-and-vinegar ratio) and some spices. Once your jars are sealed, try to wait about 48 hours before sampling, to ensure the best flavour and texture. And remember, since quick pickling doesn’t involve a canning method, the jars should be kept in the fridge and consumed within a couple of months. When the kids left the nest, it was time for these homeowners to reimagine life in their Ottawa home in the beautiful Glebe neighbourhood. Their home, built more than two decades ago, was ready for its next chapter. They enlisted Nathan Kyle Studio, a full-service Ottawa interior design studio, to guide the project from initial concept to final styling. “Whether designing a custom home, transforming an existing residence through renovation, or reimagining a single room or an entire property, we oversee every stage of the process with clarity and intention,” says principal Nathan Kyle. OUR HOMES spoke to Nathan about this renovation and the beautiful transformation of the home’s main floor. 64 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
OUR HOMES: Describe the scope of the
project and the rooms that were part of the renovation.
Nathan Kyle: This renovation transformed the home’s entryway, family room, and kitchen and bar area over the course of several months. With the homeowners now empty nesters, the focus was on reimagining the rear of the home, the heart of their daily lives and where they gather with family when their children return to visit. The project centred on a surgical refresh of the kitchen and family room, carefully allocating the budget to maximise both visual impact and functionality. Rather than a complete renovation, we retained what worked and invested in the elements that would make the greatest difference. A strategic kitchen refresh maximized both function and impact, while the family room became a warm, inviting space. By blending existing features with thoughtfully sourced and customdesigned pieces, we created a cohesive, timeless interior tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle. OH: What were the homeowners’
better serve their daily life. Beyond the furnishings, they were ready to move away from their traditional white Shaker-style kitchen in favour of something with more depth, character and a stronger design identity. Above all, they were looking for a sophisticated home that felt timeless, layered and effortlessly inviting.
must-haves, style preferences and what was on their wishlist?
OH: What services did Nathan Kyle
NK: The homeowners were looking for a complete refresh of their space that balanced everyday functionality with a more elevated aesthetic. One of their key priorities was discreetly integrating audio-visual components so the space worked seamlessly for television viewing without feeling tech-heavy. They also wanted to replace the family room furnishings and update the eat-in dining area to
NK: We provided a comprehensive turnkey service, managing every aspect of the project from concept to completion. Our scope included the complete interior refinishing of the kitchen, full project management throughout construction, coordination of specialty trades and the sourcing and procurement of all finishes, fixtures and décor, including custom furnishings. OH: Let’s start with the colour palette. NK: The colour palette draws from rich jewel tones like deep amber, onyx and jade that feel both refined and timeless. Inspired by the home’s traditional architecture and the character of its established neighbourhood, the palette brings a sense of quiet grandeur while celebrating the craftsmanship and history of the era. OH: Describe what was done in the kitchen. NK: The kitchen pairs rich, timeless finishes with refined detailing. Originally crafted by a local artisan, the cabinetry was painted white a decade earlier. Rather than replacing it, we restored its character by having it expertly sanded and refinished by Excels Furniture Repairs, giving it a renewed sense of depth and longevity. The colour, Deep Secret by Benjamin Moore, introduces depth and warmth. The cabinetry is complemented by Maxfine Marmi Arabescato porcelain countertops and backsplash, made in Italy, that add understated luxury. Oil-rubbed bronze hardware brings another layer of character and texture. 66 | ourhomes F A L L 2 0 2 6
This kitchen proves you don’t have to start from scratch to reinvent a space. Existing cabinetry was sanded, refinished and painted Benjamin Moore Deep Secret, a rich, warm hue.
OH: The lighting is also unique, especially the

the addition of curves.
NK: The entry light is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional lantern, creating a thoughtful connection between the home’s classic architecture and refreshed interior. First discovered during our travels, this sculptural fixture by Michael Anastassiades was sourced through Italy and became a defining element of the project. Like a piece of suspended jewelry, the dining light fixture introduces an unexpected sense of artistry to the room. Three ceiling canopies are connected by elegantly draped cords, allowing the pendants to hang at varying heights in a composition that feels intentionally effortless. Warm brass detailing pairs beautifully with softly frosted, capsule-shaped glass shades, casting an intimate glow over the walnut dining table. The fixture’s sculptural presence provides a striking counterpoint to the home’s traditional architecture, embodying the project’s balance of timeless craftsmanship and contemporary restraint.
NK: The furniture creates a unique, artful atmosphere, with a strong emphasis on sculptural forms and collectible design. Curves were a deliberate choice in the sofa, armchairs and island stools, adding visual interest and a sense of softness to the space. The sofa, in particular, was inspired by Vladimir Kagan’s avant-garde designs, which are rooted in meticulous attention to detail and celebrated for their flowing, sensuous lines. Notable pieces include the Pumpkin Chair by Pierre Paulin for Ligne Roset, with its soft, swivel design and armless silhouette that still allows you to comfortably rest your arms along its supportive, curved form. We also included a coffee table by artist Tom Faulkner that pays homage to traditional styling while feeling entirely contemporary. We designed and commissioned a custom media unit with black speaker cloth to seamlessly integrate AV components, ensuring both beauty and function throughout the space. Continued on page 68

home & designer OH: Describe the refined finishing
touches that create the moody, timeless feel of the main floor.
NK: Throughout the main floor, honest, authentic materials were chosen to create a home that feels enduring rather than trend-driven. The refinished kitchen, painted in a deep, rich blue, establishes the moody palette and sets the tone for the surrounding spaces. In the family room, textured finishes, including a hand-applied faux-finish fireplace meant to emulate natural limestone, add depth, character and a sophisticated sense of layering. Together, these carefully considered materials and finishes create a warm, timeless interior with a quiet elegance that will continue to age beautifully. OH: What local Ottawa-area
companies did you work with?
NK: We worked with a variety of local Ottawa companies. Universal Appliances helped our client pick a new speed oven that fits their needs and space. We sourced the faucets and kitchen millwork hardware from Preston Hardware. The kitchen island light was sourced from Arevco Lighting Ottawa. We sourced décor items from Cadieux Interiors to decorate a beautifully finished living space. Roll Her Sleeves Painting applied a special painted finish to the existing fireplace to emulate limestone. We worked with Audioshop to ensure all the client’s AV needs were met and well executed, and we worked with Galerie St-Laurent + Hill to find the perfect art pieces to finish our clients’ space. OH: How did the
homeowners react to the finished space?
NK: The homeowners were living in the space throughout the construction process, allowing them to experience and appreciate the transformation from start to finish. They were able to see the progress of each phase of the design and construction, gaining a deeper appreciation for the details, craftsmanship and journey behind the final reveal. OH TOP: The fireplace creates a memorable focal point in the new family room. A hand-applied faux finish resembles limestone and adds texture, a key component of the layered strategy behind this aesthetic. LEFT: Replacing the family room furnishings with comfortable, lifestyle-friendly pieces that feel current was a priority for these homeowners.

HALLOWEEN ENTERTAINING THAT MAKES GROWN-UPS FEEL LIKE KIDS AGAIN STORY NI C OL E H I LTON
Halloween hosting doesn’t always have to include miniature chocolate bars and candy corn. Done right, a playful snack board can add a spooky surprise to your table that’s perfect for parents while the kids are trick-or-treating, seasonal cocktail parties, ladies’ night with friends or even a festive family spread. The secret recipe is leaning into dramatic colours, unexpected textures, fun shapes and themed servingware that help support a spread as creepy as it is craveable. Here’s how you can create your own charBOOterie board, or charcutEERIE board, or whatever you want to call your masterpiece.
CANDYM: Primitives by Kathy – Skeleton Tray
STEP 1:
BUILD YOUR BASE Start by selecting a flat board or tray based on the size of your gathering. Wood brings warmth and an autumn feel, while slate or black serving pieces reinforce a spooky Halloween theme. Neutral-coloured boards provide the perfect backdrop for all the visual interest you’ll create with vibrant cheeses and savoury snacks. Halloween-shaped dishes featuring ghosts or bats add a touch of whimsy, and orange ramekins or small bowls add a seasonal pop of colour. CANDYM: Primitives by Kathy – Small Vintage Halloween Plates
STEP 2:
CHOOSE A MOODY COLOUR PALETTE Once you’ve settled on a serving board, decide on a theme to guide your ingredient choices and overall presentation. Go all in for Halloween with a traditional board using bold orange and black or a witchyinspired spread embracing mysterious purples and a twilight aesthetic. For a harvest look, incorporate warm earthy tones or create a kid-friendly board using items in monster green and vibrant purple. Once you’ve selected a palette, fill your board with ingredients that reflect it, such as blackberries, purple grapes, figs, orange cheddar, merlot-infused cheese, blood orange slices, dark chocolate bark and black olives.
STEP 3:
ADD CREEPY-CUTE ELEMENTS This is where the CharBOOterie board really comes to life, turning an ordinary spread into a festive feast! Use Halloween cookie cutters to transform simple ingredients into frightful shapes like pumpkins, bats, ghosts and witches’ hats – naan bread or sliced cheese works perfectly. Whip up some devilish devilled eggs by adding red pepper horns or wrap cocktail sausages in pastry to resemble mummies. Tap into your creativity by adding candy eyeballs to food items for personality. Let’s face it, making this type of board is one of the few times you’re encouraged to play with your food!
Work from the centre outward when assembling your board. Place a wheel of brie in the middle, then use a cookie cutter to cut a themed shape on top, or remove the shape entirely and fill the space with red pepper jelly. Position dip bowls and larger items first, then arrange meats, cheeses and crackers around them. Fold meats into ribbons or rosettes to add texture. Fill any gaps with snacks like apple chips, baby carrots, candied pecans or gummy worms. Cluster ingredients generously so the board feels abundant, then add themed cocktail picks, cheese knives and serving spoons. Guests will definitely want to taste this appetizer with their eyes first.
