I

I wouldn’t go so far as to declare winter my favourite season. Yet, as time marches on I find myself

more inclined to enjoy cocooning over the colder months. There is a certain appeal to closing the front door, appreciating the early darkness and the excuse to stay in with my husband, light some candles and relax by the fire.

In summer, our family seems to be rushing off in different directions.

My granddaughters are in competitions with their horses most weekends from May to October in far-flung cities across Ontario and Quebec. Whereas the summer allows for limited family gathering time, winter presents increased opportunities for family reunions over warm, cosy dinners. I enjoy experimenting with new recipes like the Chocolate Pudding Cake in this edition. Each family member has their preferred menu items from years past so I must be sure to include the beloved favourites in the rotation. It is my pleasure to spoil them!

Of course, the holidays are the highlight of the winter season, which is the inspiration I need to go out in the cold to shop or visit friends. If you have some tricky family or friends to buy for (and we all have a few), we have an article just for you with some simple suggestions for your pickiest gift recipients. To finish the season, plan a New Year’s party that is classic, elegant yet fun. These tips have already inspired me to plan ahead for a celebration of my own to ring in 2024.

Windows connect us to the outside environment and flood our space with natural light. They balance the architectural design and can frame views of nature. Why would we cover them up? Well, window treatments play a role from a functional and aesthetic point of view.

PRIVACY & SECURITY If you live in a city, town or close to a busy roadway, window treatments provide privacy that can increase your feelings of comfort. If you own a vacation property, obstructing the views to the interior provides additional security.

GLARE CONTROL Whether working on a computer or watching television, window coverings temper the light to avoid casting a glare on your screens (specifically during certain times of the day or year).

SOUND ABSORPTION With the prevalence of open-concept homes and vaulted ceilings, drapery made with a dense, tightly woven fabric can aid in absorbing the noise that travels throughout your home.

LIGHT TRANSMISSION Window coverings can help to protect furnishings from fading and sun damage, particularly from the strong south or west sun.

ENERGY CONSERVATION Windows are constantly being manufactured to higher standards of energy efficiency but window coverings can still help (especially from the westerly winter wind or beaming summer sun).

Heavy draperies layered with a honeycomb cellular shade can provide additional insulation value.

LIFESTYLE Shift workers and light sleepers benefit from blackout blinds/draperies in the bedroom as darkness indicates to the body that it’s time to rest.

Be mindful of your pets – cats like to climb curtains and dogs can soil the edges of your drapery.

Location Consider the material, style and design of the window treatment and the characteristics and use of each room, as well as frequent occupants (greasy fingers from little people may affect your selections).

Style Window coverings can elevate the home from an aesthetic point of view to support the overall design and architecture.

There are generally two types of window coverings – hard and soft. Soft window coverings include drapery, curtains and shades, while hard window treatments include blinds, shutters and screens.

Drapery is typically more formal than curtains. They are often pleated and hung on rods mounted outside of the window frame at the ceiling or above the top of the window frame.

Curtains are mounted inside or outside of the window frame. An example is the café curtain, which has made a comeback in recent years. They are installed halfway up the window (typically within the frame), providing privacy in the lower portion while allowing daylight to stream in from above.

Shades control light by filtering or blocking. Roller, Roman, sheer and cellular shades are examples.

Depending on the options, they can be translucent, opaque or black-out.

Blinds are either horizontal or vertical and made of several materials, including wood, vinyl, metal or fabric. Traditional blinds can tilt to control light and privacy. Vertical solutions include slats and panel tracks.

Shutters are rigid panels in a frame with louvres that tilt. They have hinges that operate like small doors installed within the window frame. Screens can be sliding or folding, such as the Shoji screen.

Operation Depending on the type of window covering, motorization is becoming more popular with smart-home automation, especially for difficultto-reach windows, large windows or windows with sensitive fabrics that you want to avoid touching frequently. Some systems require a hardwire during the rough-in phase (possible for new builds and renovations), while others utilize a rechargeable battery system. Be prepared that motorized window treatments cost significantly more than their non-motorized counterparts.

Cost Window treatments are an investment and should be a line item in your home build or renovation budget from the outset. To help determine costs, schedule an appointment with a local expert. They will evaluate your needs and tailor solutions to fit your requirements, your lifestyle and your specific house. For example, the style/type of window operation, whether you have traditional casing or drywall returns, and if you need black-out versus light filtering will all affect the best mounting solution, which will determine the measurements. It is best to consult a professional!

As with anything, regular maintenance will extend the life of your window coverings. The style, material and design of your window treatments will dictate how frequently they need to be cleaned, but generally dust or vacuum during your routine and add a deep clean once or twice a year. OH

With two young children and busy careers (Mandie, a psychotherapist and co-owner of Robertson Therapy, and D.J., the operator of Robertson Rent-All, a family-owned equipment rental company), the couple realized they definitely needed some expert guidance. That’s when they brought designer Lindsay Wolfe-Assaf of The Home Stylist on board.

Lindsay was instrumental in helping them with the overwhelming number of decisions that come with building a new home. “With it being fully custom, the options were endless, and we really needed someone to help narrow it down,” says Mandie.

The homeowners chose Pagi Construction as the home builder.

Pagi provided the initial floor plans and worked collaboratively with Lindsay and the homeowners to finalize the details. “Projects are always more successful when you have a cohesive team that works together from the beginning to the end of the project,” says Lindsay.

She credits the success of this project in part to their great relationship and the trust they placed in each other. “We trusted Lindsay’s vision because she’s got a better eye for design than either of us and it worked out really well,” says Mandie.

The home’s exterior is craftsman-style with rustic touches,

which the homeowners have cleverly dubbed “country craftsman.”

It was important to them to keep as many of the trees as possible to maintain the “country feel that’s so nice and reminiscent of our childhoods,” says Mandie.

Inside, the home is flooded with beautiful light and uses natural materials almost exclusively. A serene neutral colour palette of white, greys, gold, and wood tones runs throughout the home. “We tried to keep it consistent so it would flow really well,” says Lindsay. “When you have a big house, if there’s too much variation, it feels choppy and all over the place.”

All the cabinets and built-ins by Boiserie Sébo Woodwork feature the same door style and consistent black or brass hardware.

Stunning tile is another element that’s constant throughout the house.

From the kitchen to the mudroom to the bathrooms, each space features intricate tile work with an unexpected twist and flawless installation courtesy of Wagner Tile.

Lindsay skilfully used shape and texture to add interest and elevate each space. “We really played with shapes a lot in the house. We picked grey tile, but instead of a rectangle, we used herringbone and hexagon tile,” she says. Continued on page 34

The designer loves to incorporate details that make the home unique while ensuring the material selections remain timeless and flow together. The seamless transition between the mudroom tile and the white oak hardwood floor (BH Floors Ottawa) is a great example.

Mandie was hesitant about the unconventional design choice but Lindsay convinced her to step out of her comfort zone and it turned out to be one of her favourite features. “Lindsay really encouraged us to trust the process and go with some different design elements that I might have been too scared to incorporate,” says Mandie.

When asked what she loves most about the house, Mandie says it’s difficult to choose because she’s so happy with everything. “I love the kitchen, but my favourite space is the living room with the floor-toceiling windows. Every time I’m in that space, I just feel good.”

And it’s easy to see why this room holds a special place in Mandie’s heart. The soaring ceilings and two-storey wall of windows (Marlboro Windows & Doors) create an indoor-outdoor connection that leaves you feeling as if you’re sitting in the forest.

The primary bedroom has the same bright, open and airy feel.

Draperies over the large window are from Linen + Lining. The goal was to create a simple and calm space while also incorporating some bold touches, like the large-scale bathroom tile (Euro Tile & Stone). “We kept a neutral palette and added texture with the carpet, light fixtures and fabrics,” says Lindsay. “We wanted the timeless look of marble, but with a bit more of a wow factor.” A large oak vanity brings warmth and balance to all the tile, with the large windows placed high on the wall to allow in plenty of natural light without sacrificing privacy. If she had one piece of advice for someone starting out on their own custom build, Mandie says it would be to hire a designer. “I don’t know how you could do it without someone to guide you and keep you on track.

It’s a must,” says Mandie.

Lindsay seconds that thought. “When you’re doing a custom home and spending so much money on an architect and builder, you want to make sure you’re also investing in good design decisions you won’t have to fix later.”

Cake 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ cup white granulated sugar ¼ cup cocoa powder 2 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt ¾ cup milk ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Sauce ½ cup white granulated sugar ½ cup packed light brown sugar 3 Tbsp cocoa powder 1-¼ cups boiling water DIRECTIONS There are two layers to this cake.

Cake Layer Preheat oven to 350˚F. In a mediumsize bowl, add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk, melted butter and vanilla extract until combined. Add to a buttered and floured 9-inch square or round pan.

Sauce Layer In another bowl, combine sugar, brown sugar and cocoa powder.

Sprinkle this mixture over the cake batter in an even layer. Carefully pour the boiling water over the top, being careful not to disturb the layers underneath. Do not mix the layers!

Bake for 30-35 minutes. The middle of the cake will still jiggle when removed.

Wait 15 minutes before serving, but the cake is best served out of the oven on the day you bake it. OH

For Charles, who has cherished childhood memories in Alta Vista, the desire to build a family home here had been an aspiration for years. “I grew up here, a little further south,” says Charles. “We always said one day we would build our family home in Alta Vista, and one day we saw this lot for sale so we bought it and we got working on the home.”

Guiding the project was Mark Patterson of Patterson Homes, the builder entrusted with the task of turning their vision into reality. The design process took a little over a year, with Mark bringing on Susan Hodgson of Design Studio Hodgson to help pull the project together. For Mark and Susan, who had worked together before, it was a great team fit.

For Charles and Dalia, it was imperative the entryway serve as a focal point and set the tone for the home. The 5,500 sq. ft. residence has a grand entry adorned with a custom-built, curved staircase by Menuiserie Du-Bois and soaring 19-foot ceilings.

In what designer Susan describes as a classical home with a modern twist, she worked closely alongside Mark and the homeowners to design a space that reflects their personal style and remains timeless.

Charles explains it was part of his and Dalia’s cultural background to have some classical elements alongside the modern elements. The formal living room at the front of the home serves that purpose. They wanted a comfortable and inviting dining and living space to host large gatherings.

“I always tell the homeowners the kitchen is the focal point in the home,” says Mark.

“When you have people over, family and friends, everyone migrates there. The way that all came together was pretty cool.” To accommodate their busy lives and growing family, a hidden pantry was added off the kitchen. An entertainment area just off the kitchen serves as a bar and coffee station.

For designer Susan, this space was her favourite to watch come together. “It’s all about the windows, the natural light and the fact that there’s more of a balanced combination of traditional elements with a modern look,” she says. “I had the most fun with that space.”

Subtle classical elements that include the Shakerstyle cabinets, gold mirrors, coffered ceiling and bold pendant lighting tie this space seamlessly into the theme throughout the rest of the home.

A focal point of this space is the floor-to-ceiling, custom gas fireplace by Friendly Fires. The surround was a tricky, yet rewarding collaboration between the homeowners, Susan and tile experts from Euro Tile & Stone. The space is a treasured area where the family relaxes together.

Remarkable attention to detail has been meticulously woven into every aspect of the home. The mudroom may seem simple at first glance but closer inspection reveals clever details, such as a hidden cabinet designed as a discreet litter box for the family cat. A well-used space by the busy family, this versatile room doubles as the control hub for the Smart Home system, installed by Charles. Continued on page 54

An ode to nature, these pretty chandeliers are reminiscent of vines and branches.

The grand staircase to the upper level of the home offers a very different view. Details like panelling and lighting are more exposed in what Susan describes as a play of scales.

“The wall panelling was divided a little more up top so it gives some of that detail on this upper level and sort of balances what’s happening below. Seeing some of the lighting from this level was a must,” says Susan. The upper level hosts the family bedrooms, a guest bedroom and laundry room.

Charles describes the design process as fun and creative for his family, with his two children eagerly participating to pick features for their own rooms. Continued on page 56

Louise Cardinal of Louise Cardinal Concept designed the condo together with her daughter Claudel Cardinal. The oversize tile floor (Euro Tile & Stone) that runs throughout this onebedroom-plus-den condominium was the base for the entire design, she reveals.

“The first thing we picked was the floor,” says Louise. “It is the same flooring throughout the condo. And everything was built around these big tiles with shine to them.”

This project marks the third that Louise and Christian Guibord, of Millstrong Cabinets Inc., have done together over the years for homeowners Lyne Bellehumeur and Claude Génier. In a delightful working partnership, Louise develops concepts and Christian brings those ideas to life, much to the repeated delight of homeowners.

The homeowners bought this condo on spec and called on Louise and Christian to alter the footprint to accommodate their needs, which included knocking down walls and taking what had been designed as a two-bedroom-plus-den condominium to a home that features a single stunning bedroom sanctuary and a rugged, but refined den.

Working with a condominium presents certain challenges,

In addition to having the same flooring pulled throughout the condo, the paint colour, Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, was an important factor that tied it all together, says Louise. She selected the same hue to be applied throughout the home.

“It’s not too cold, not too warm,” says Louise, saying that the size and placement of windows came into play with the paint decision because sunlight throughout the day – and throughout the seasons – would ultimately influence the appearance of the wall colour.

The homeowners also have a lot of original art, so the wall colour choice had to be an appropriate backdrop for their art collection.

The light fixtures help to signal transition through zones in the main living areas, without interfering with sightlines or the view. They add visual texture, particularly the chandelier over the dining table, and the twin pendants over the island from EP Store.

Follow these steps for each bell: Use a hammer and nail to make a hole in the bottom of the pot. Place the yarn through the hole and make a knot. Apply a drop of hot glue to anchor the knot in place on the bottom of the pot.

CREATE THESE FAUX VINTAGE SLEIGH BELLS AND ADD SOME NOSTALGIC CHARM TO YOUR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS.

Next, flip the bowl upside down and, using the glue gun, secure a wooden ring on the centre of the bowl.

Once dry, apply Gorilla glue to anchor it in place.

Use Gorilla Glue to secure the small bowl to the bottom of the pot and let dry.

Then, paint the bell and embroidery hoop in metallic gold.

Once dry, use the sandpaper to lightly distress the edges to allow the black paint to show through.

Next, paint the inside of each pot with silver paint.

Apply a touch of silver paint around the edges and add intricate details for a weathered appearance.

Cut two lengths of jute rope at varying heights. Fasten one bell to the end of the rope and thread the other end through the hoop. Attach the bell to the opposite end and wrap a small amount of rope to conceal the knot. Repeat these steps with the other bells.

Stagger the height of the bells. Wrap a small amount of rope approximately four inches below the hoop and use a drop of hot glue to secure it in place.

I love the idea of celebrating the start of a new year and all of the excitement and possibility it brings. This season, let’s lean into tasteful, simple and fresh NYE festivities to keep it classic, modern, and of course – fun. I’m planning on ringing in the New Year while hosting an intimate dinner party for close friends and family. These are a few tips I’m using this year as I plan the evening with style in mind.

TIP 1: Don’t Fall Victim To The Overdone NYE Décor When creating ambience for dining, embrace the romance of a new beginning. Guests won’t feel overwhelmed and can enjoy the company and conversation.

While keeping décor classic, we can still have fun with a little NYE glam.

I love the idea of a hero moment for guests to enjoy throughout the evening.

A larger scale décor prop like a clock or life-size champagne bottle will win the show instead of lots of small, kitschy décor that can make the room feel messy. Plus, it’s the perfect photo op!

TIP 2: Create An Intimate And Unique Dining Moment Put a fresh spin on well-loved classics by stepping up the presentation. This year I am dazzling guests on arrival with a martini tower finished with stuffed olives. This is a fun way to re-invent the champagne tower!

For this event I want to create an engaging moment for guests. That’s why I love a handson dinner like fondue. To keep the display interesting and eye-catching, roll meats and skewer them. Instead of oil in your fondue pot, try using your favourite broth-based soup for added flavour – my favourite is onion soup. Plus, a beautiful display of breads, accoutrements and sides will round out the meal.

My favourite part? A “guest experience” also lightens the load of the host to prepare and plate numerous courses and meals – all while creating organic moments of conversation and activity.

I love sending a formal paper invitation to set the tone for the event.

A dress code is always an engaging way to liven up the night! This could be black tie, a colour theme, or even “come as you are.” I am asking my guests to dress in classic creams and champagne tones – a stylish colour palette that will have guests ready to strike a pose for a great social moment. Place Instax instant cameras throughout the event so guests can have fun capturing the evening’s special moments.

For final touches, include note cards and envelopes so guests can write down their new year’s resolutions and celebrate the start of something new.
