Autumn leaves and a crisp breeze. This has to be my favourite time of year. The weather turns cooler, and the days start to shorten, but that’s doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Fall brings such beauty to the Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland regions. Lush green forests change colours before our eyes, displaying a vibrant array of reds, oranges and yellows. Hikes in the forest with my dog require bundling up in my favourite fall jacket and boots, only to return back home to a warm apple cider accompanied by a soft blanket and good book. So, whenever I get the chance during the fall, I make sure to get outside, enjoy what nice weather is remaining and take a moment to reflect and appreciate all that has happened so far this year. The time to work on outdoor projects comes to an end and it’s time to move inside and fall back in love with your wonderful home. For most, home becomes a sanctuary during these cold months, somewhere that’s warm and welcoming, perfect for spending quality time with family and friends. The three homes featured in this edition are true representations of what it means to love your home. Their owners have added charm to their spaces, designing the spectacular interiors themselves or with the help of loved ones. As you sit and enjoy this issue, my hope is that you feel inspired to embrace the beauty that comes with the season. As you put away the gardening tools and outdoor games, get excited for what this season holds and find ways to fall in love with your home all over again.

Windows connect us to the outside environment and flood our space with natural light. They balance the architectural design and can frame views of nature. Why would we cover them up? Well, window treatments play a role from a functional and aesthetic point of view.
PRIVACY & SECURITY If you live in a city, town or close to a busy roadway, window treatments provide privacy that can increase your feelings of comfort. If you own a vacation property, obstructing the views to the interior provides additional security.
GLARE CONTROL Whether working on a computer or watching television, window coverings temper the light to avoid casting a glare on your screens (specifically during certain times of the day or year).
SOUND ABSORPTION With the prevalence of open-concept homes and vaulted ceilings, drapery made with a dense, tightly woven fabric can aid in absorbing the noise that travels throughout your home.
LIGHT TRANSMISSION Window coverings can help to protect furnishings from fading and sun damage, particularly from the strong south or west sun.
ENERGY CONSERVATION Windows are constantly being manufactured to higher standards of energy efficiency but window coverings can still help (especially from the westerly winter wind or beaming summer sun). Heavy draperies layered with a honeycomb cellular shade can provide additional insulation value.
LIFESTYLE Shift workers and light sleepers benefit from blackout blinds/draperies in the bedroom as darkness indicates to the body that it’s time to rest. Be mindful of your pets – cats like to climb curtains and dogs can soil the edges of your drapery.
Location Consider the material, style and design of the window treatment and the characteristics and use of each room, as well as frequent occupants (greasy fingers from little people may affect your selections).
Style Window coverings can elevate the home from an aesthetic point of view to support the overall design and architecture. There are generally two types of window coverings – hard and soft. Soft window coverings include drapery, curtains and shades, while hard window treatments include blinds, shutters and screens. Drapery is typically more formal than curtains. They are often pleated and hung on rods mounted outside of the window frame at the ceiling or above the top of the window frame. Curtains are mounted inside or outside of the window frame. An example is the café curtain, which has made a comeback in recent years. They are installed halfway up the window (typically within the frame), providing privacy in the lower portion while allowing daylight to stream in from above. Shades control light by filtering or blocking. Roller, Roman, sheer and cellular shades are examples. Depending on the options, they can be translucent, opaque or black-out. Blinds are either horizontal or vertical and made of several materials, including wood, vinyl, metal or fabric. Traditional blinds can tilt to control light and privacy. Vertical solutions include slats and panel tracks.
Shutters are rigid panels in a frame with louvres that tilt. They have hinges that operate like small doors installed within the window frame. Screens can be sliding or folding, such as the Shoji screen.
Operation Depending on the type of window covering, motorization is becoming more popular with smart-home automation, especially for difficultto-reach windows, large windows or windows with sensitive fabrics that you want to avoid touching frequently. Some systems require a hardwire during the rough-in phase (possible for new builds and renovations), while others utilize a rechargeable battery system. Be prepared that motorized window treatments cost significantly more than their non-motorized counterparts.
Cost Window treatments are an investment and should be a line item in your home build or renovation budget from the outset. To help determine costs, schedule an appointment with a local expert. They will evaluate your needs and tailor solutions to fit your requirements, your lifestyle and your specific house. For example, the style/type of window operation, whether you have traditional casing or drywall returns, and if you need black-out versus light filtering will all affect the best mounting solution, which will determine the measurements. It is best to consult a professional!
Care As with anything, regular maintenance will extend the life of your window coverings. The style, material and design of your window treatments will dictate how frequently they need to be cleaned, but generally dust or vacuum during your routine and add a deep clean once or twice a year. OH

BUTTERNUT SQUASH pasta RECIPE AND P HO TO G R A PHY JEN ELLE MCC U L L OC H
INGREDIENTS (Serves 4-6) 2 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed 4 cloves garlic, peeled 1 Tbsp thyme ½ cup ricotta cheese ¼ - ½ cup vegetable or chicken stock 1 box (450g) dried pasta of choice Fresh sage, to serve Parmesan, to serve Salt and pepper Extra virgin olive oil INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 400˚F. On a baking sheet, toss together butternut squash, garlic cloves, thyme and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Roast squash for 30-35 minutes. When tender, add the butternut squash, garlic and ricotta to a food processor. Add stock as needed and purée until smooth. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta according to package directions. Save one cup of pasta water and drain the noodles when cooked.

the couple discovered the property. Initially, they were asked by a friend to take a look at the home. “We were happy to check it out for them because we knew the builder,” Danielle recalls. They opened the door, and the rest is history. Born in Germany, Danielle was raised in Vermont and came to Canada to study at McGill University in Montreal. In 2006, she left Toronto to embrace rural living. Danielle bought an old farm in Pontypool and moved to the country with her four daughters, Carlyle, Grace, Olivia and Aubrey Rose. Danielle and Shawn, a demolition contractor, transformed the property and rustic old barn into South Pond Farms, a thriving destination for weddings, culinary experiences, workshops and homemade food products. She also hosted Taste of the Country, a Netflix series that depicted the trials, triumphs and tribulations of life on the farm. “It was fantastic, so much fun to do,” recalls Danielle.

In 2021, she decided it was time for a change. “I was starting to feel burnt out,” she explains. “I loved the farm, but it was a huge amount of work, and we wanted more time for family. It was a magical place, but it was time to say goodbye.” Excited, they sold their properties and set out on a new adventure in Peterborough. Danielle and Shawn’s home is one of four similar townhouses designed by Lett Architects Inc. in collaboration with SR Steinsky Construction and Lance King, who owned the land and original bungalow. Panoramic views of the lake, nine-foot ceilings, heated driveways, elevators and automated lights combine to make these homes unique and distinctive. Lofty, lake-facing windows by Inline Fiberglass fill each level with natural light and sweeping views of sky and water. Danielle, who decorated the interior, incorporated a natural motif in her design. “The house focuses on nature, the outdoors and the water. There are no curtains, so nothing obstructs the view. There is a sense of spaciousness in every room,” she notes. Danielle chose colours, furnishings and accessories that create a contemporary feel and reflect a palette infused with shades of green and blue. The ground floor is anchored by a heated driveway and garage while Danielle and Shawn’s office is the primary space. Her baby grand piano adds a touch of elegance while metal industrial bookshelves, designed by Shawn and built by City Welding Works, house her personal library. Currently, she works from home, sharing her experience as an entrepreneur and creative designer via her website southpondfarms.ca. “I kept the name of
my business because South Pond was an umbrella for a number of things,” Danielle says. “I am rejigging my website to include design, consulting, recipes and my podcast, How You Play The Game.” A large foyer, powder room and closet round out the lower level. A magnificent spalted maple mono stringer staircase connects each level. Modern glass railings allow light to filter throughout the house. An elevator is conveniently located next to the stairs. Danielle indulges her love of cooking in the well-equipped gourmet kitchen on the second or main level. A built-in black KitchenAid refrigerator, Dekton counters and recessed cabinets inspire a contemporary feel. There is plenty of space to create new recipes on the elongated island, illuminated by a long LED pendant light. Turquoise wool chairs, pale engineered hardwood floors by Floortrends and accent walls in Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace beautifully offset the darker décor. “It’s a great workspace. There’s lots of room, a pantry
and a place to store wine,” says Danielle. The dining and living areas overlook a terrace resplendent with magnificent views of the lake. On cool fall evenings, the linear gas fireplace, supplied by Chemong Chimney Ltd., glows brightly. Industrial-style lamps, crafted from reclaimed boiler parts by Shawn Cameron flavour the décor with a hint of steam punk. “He’s a genius, very artistic,” says Danielle. Choose Quality Over Quantity There’s nothing more disappointing than having a beautiful bathroom design on paper that is then poorly executed with sub-par products, materials or workmanship. Selecting The Right Materials Is your goal to modernize and “trendify” your bathroom, or are you hoping to create a space with staying power? Upon arriving at this rural new build, even before I’m out of my car, I’m treated to a spectacular line of sight. I can see right through the side light of the front door, clear through the living space and out over the lush valley of trees beyond. Inside it’s one great sight-line after another, like this view through to the three season room. But, let’s talk about the kitchen. The finishes and style repeat, pulling the large open space together. The Raccoon Fur finish is repeated on all the cabinets. The open shelving is repeated on the bar, pantry and island end. There’s a coffee bar around the left corner, its

backsplash extends all the way up through the glass cabinets, a mirror of the backsplash on the far pantry wall (too big for one pic, but you can see it on our instagram). My favourite bits, beyond the usual amenities — the overall visual appeal of the black stainless appliances, the tall open cabinet to the left of the fridge, the client is displaying some interesting pieces, and this cabinet solves the fridge door swing being too tight to the wall. Best bit that you can’t see: There’s a fantastic walk-in pantry through the pocket door in the corner complete with a roomba garage.

After living in the same 1960s bungalow-style home since 1979, Mary and Al knew it was time for an upgrade with modern amenities and finishes. However, they didn’t want to leave the beloved Lakefield area where they had raised their three children. That’s when they began the process of severing their bungalow’s corner lot in two so they could build an infill home. “The new home is built in what was the backyard of our bungalow,” Mary explains. “The original lot was 70-by-198 feet, and we basically cut it in half,” says Mary. Construction on the 1,549 sq. ft. home began in July 2020 and was completed in
March 2021. “We wanted the house to fit into the neighbourhood,” says Mary. “It was certainly going to be newer than all the other homes, but by keeping with the bungalow theme, it fits in.” The decision to design a modern bungalow-style home on a smaller lot steered Mary and Al closer toward their goal of creating a space they could live in forever. Laurie Young and Molly Conlin of J.L. Young Design helped the couple throughout various stages of the process. “Their expertise was invaluable, since we had never built a house before,” says Mary. of Belfry Custom Carpentry helped the couple bring their dream home to life. Helen Batten from Basterfield & Associates was the landscape architect who designed the home’s breathtaking gardens, which were then installed by Stoeckle Landscape & Design. “We decided to have the landscaping done as soon as possible so that the plants could begin to thrive, and we could start enjoying them,” says Mary. Outside there is little grass to cut in both the front and back lawns. Instead, the backyard features a spacious deck and patio area centred around a natural gas fireplace, creating the perfect outdoor space for entertaining. The interior of the home is bright and inviting. A large mudroom with a built-in bench, hooks, and storage is located off the entrance. “The mudroom is wonderful,” says Mary. Through a doorway, the home opens into the main living area, which consists of the kitchen, living and dining rooms. Large windows from Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre and double patio doors, allow plenty of natural light to pour into the home, which was an important must-have when creating the design. “The natural light Continued on page 56

The main floor also houses two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a home office. Everything one would need in a home can be found on the main level of the bungalow, nearly eliminating the use of stairs, and making it a great layout for aging in place. One-half of the lower level houses an additional bedroom, bathroom, laundry room and family room. Just in case, plumbing was installed in the upstairs mudroom for a future stacking washer and dryer. The other half of the basement is sectioned off and was completed to standard code to function as a potential rental unit. “We worked with the municipality to design into the plans a future secondary unit,” says Mary. They considered the multiple uses that could come from having such a space and how useful it could become in the future. Whether the space is used as a rental unit or as a place for a caregiver to stay should they require it, Mary and Al are prepared for what may come. Presently it is a great exercise/project space and perfect for family or friends to stay. “We’re fortunate to live in such a great community,” says Mary “We both enjoy the outdoors, and this area has so many lakes and rivers for swimming, canoeing and fishing.” Mary and Al are enjoying all that life has to offer in their new, beautifully-designed home and hope that others can gain inspiration from their thoughtfully designed infill project. As a florist for about four decades now, Ann entered the
flower industry during her university days. She decided to take a major step in her career when she walked away from working for others to purchase a flower shop of her own. She bought The Kent Florist about eight years ago after all her children were officially off to university. The store itself lies within an old century building located in downtown Lindsay and Ann’s days are busy with running the shop, which offers far more than just flowers. It also stocks home décor items as well as a plethora of gift options. With a need to be closer to her new flower and gift shop, Ann and Jeff decided to move to Oakwood. They found and purchased the 1980s Confederation Log & Timber Frame home about four years ago, located mere minutes from her store. The house offers plenty of space, peace and tranquility, with additional features that help with her flower shop business. Continued on page 79

“What first caught our eye about this home was not only the beautiful acreage that surrounds it, but there are also two very large workshops on the property,” Ann states. “One of them has a lift that my husband uses and I use the other for The Kent Florist’s designs and arrangements. It especially comes in handy during the busy Christmas season.” They reached out to a local contractor in Kawartha Lakes, Jesse Beers Construction Ltd., as there were considerable upgrades that needed to be done to the home. Jesse and his team created an open-concept area in the house by knocking out the walls that separated the kitchen, living and dining rooms. floor, replaced it with new flooring, added handcrafted cabinets in the kitchen, and moved the washer and dryer to the main floor, placing them where an old closet once was. Still, one of the bigger jobs was taking out the wood stove and chimney from within the house, which was not up to current code. Ann states they were in awe once everything was completed and that the main floor feels brand new to them, with the upstairs renovations set to start very soon. Of course, Ann was able to mix a little business with pleasure by personalizing her home, using items from her The Kent Florist shop to decorate it. She selected upscale Turkish hand towels and homemade soap for the bathrooms, warm and fuzzy throws in the living room, and candles and candle holders all around. There are wooden bowls and

the Sophie Conran dish collection (including casserole dishes and cutlery) in the kitchen. Seasonal flowers are sprinkled here and there. She’s turned her log house into a home of her own by adding some unique design touches. While she loves just about every corner of the three-bedroom home (technically, four-bedroom if you count the one in the basement), she does have some favourite spots. Ann notes that the cathedral ceilings on the main floor are amazing, especially when she
is upstairs looking at the living room from the balcony. As well, she’s also very fond of the full-length porch at the front of the home and the incredible garden on the property, which highlights some high-arching sunflowers. Still, it seems she may favour one area a little more than all the others. “To be honest, I think I like the kitchen the best,” Ann explains. “I love to cook, especially when my daughters come over, who are now in their 20s. cooking at home INGREDIENTS (Makes 4)
Brown Sugar Sauce 2 Tbsp butter ¾ cup brown sugar ¾ cup water
Apple Dumplings 4 medium-sized baking apples, peeled and cored ½ cup sugar 1 Tbsp cinnamon Pastry dough Egg wash (1 egg whisked with 1 tsp of water) Butter INSTRUCTIONS
Brown Sugar Sauce In a pot over medium-low heat, combine the ingredients for the brown sugar sauce. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Apple Dumplings Preheat the oven to 375˚F. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

These apple dumplings follow the traditional approach. Whole apples are wrapped in pastry and baked in a brown sugar sauce. They are perfect served with a scoop of ice cream.
Roll out pastry dough and divide into four equal squares. Place an apple in the middle of each square. Place one spoonful of cinnamon sugar into the middle of each apple and top with a dollop of butter. Fold the dough around each apple, matching all corners and seal the sides with egg wash as needed. Place the dumplings in a baking dish and pour the brown sugar sauce on top of the dumplings. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender. This will vary with the variety and size of the apples you choose. TIP: If the tops start to brown but the apples are not cooked through, place a piece of aluminium foil or parchment paper on top of the dumplings. Serve each dumpling with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. OH

Follow these steps for each bell: Use a hammer and nail to make a hole in the bottom of the pot. Place the yarn through the hole and make a knot. Apply a drop of hot glue to anchor the knot in place on the bottom of the pot.
CREATE THESE FAUX VINTAGE SLEIGH BELLS AND ADD SOME NOSTALGIC CHARM TO YOUR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS.
Next, flip the bowl upside down and, using the glue gun, secure a wooden ring on the centre of the bowl. Once dry, apply Gorilla glue to anchor it in place. Use Gorilla Glue to secure the small bowl to the bottom of the pot and let dry.
Then, paint the bell and embroidery hoop in metallic gold. Once dry, use the sandpaper to lightly distress the edges to allow the black paint to show through. Next, paint the inside of each pot with silver paint. Apply a touch of silver paint around the edges and add intricate details for a weathered appearance.

Using the yarn, tie a knot around the nail and secure it in place with hot glue.

Wooden rings Metallic gold and silver acrylic paint Yarn Paintbrush Glue gun and Gorilla Glue 220 sandpaper 4 Nails
Cut two lengths of jute rope at varying heights. Fasten one bell to the end of the rope and thread the other end through the hoop. Attach the bell to the opposite end and wrap a small amount of rope to conceal the knot. Repeat these steps with the other bells. Stagger the height of the bells. Wrap a small amount of rope approximately four inches below the hoop and use a drop of hot glue to secure it in place. Hang your sleigh bells on your front door, over a mantel or in your foyer to ring in the festive season! OH
