n America, we traditionally take time to reflect on life during November. We think about our families, our community, our country and the people we love. We are thankful for all these things and more.

It is sometimes difficult to reflect on the good things in life. We live in an era of constant communication and conflict. Many popular media outlets capitalize on the things that divide us. At Our City we focus on the things that bring us together. We publish news about our community with a decidedly positive voice. You won’t see any opinion columns written to demonize one group of people or another. We believe that 100 people pulling on a rope in the same direction can accomplish anything, while 50 people pulling on each end of a rope can accomplish nothing.

Weston Makes Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live List

nce again, Money magazine has named Weston to its list of Best Places to Live in America. The City of Weston was ranked #21 for 2018. This is the fourth time since 2012 that Weston has made this prestigious list.

Each year Money magazine analyzes cities across the country with populations of 50,000 or more to select the most desirable cities in which to live.

According to the magazine, “these spots combine economic growth, affordability and quality of life.”

Weston certainly checks the box for those criteria. According to Mayor Daniel Stermer, “Weston has all the qualities that families want, and that in turn attracts a quality business community.”

He credits this achievement to the careful planning city leaders have always provided. “As leaders we have always done the long-range planning and invested in our infrastructure needs, staffing and development to ensure the quality of life elements that today reap the rewards of this recognition and so many others.”

Mayor Stermer adds, “We believe Weston has always had all of the elements of a top city: strong quality schools, high quality public safety services and low crime, access to quality health care, top notch parks and recreation, and a fiscally sound

government. When added with the intangible factors of immaculate and distinctive landscaping and aesthetics, cultural offerings, community spirit and involvement, and a unique governmental structure leveraging a contract style of management – yes, Your World Is Here!”

Weston’s lush landscaping and convenient location impressed Money’s research team. This is how the magazine described Weston: “Wooded roadsides and a citywide network of inlets lend Weston an air of tropical seclusion, though it sits just 35 miles north of Miami. Residents are never far from water, whether in ponds, lakes, or those inlets. Many homes border it; many parks feature it. The natural beauty makes for a pleasant ride to the office, albeit a long one: Work commutes typically run 30 minutes.

Those trips pay off, though, as families pull in a median income of over $111,000.”

The researchers also pointed out Weston’s sense of community, despite the lack of a traditional downtown. The article mentioned popular community events such as the Moonlight Movies in the Park series and the annual Fourth of July

Hometown Parade as a gathering place for residents.

In selecting its 2018 list of Best Places to Live in America, Money magazine used a very specific methodology which included median family income, median house price, crime, average commute, projected job growth, high school graduation rate, and even number of days of sunshine.

To ensure geographic diversity, no more than two cities per state, and one per county, were chosen. Doral was the other city in Florida selected.

It ranked #22. And, in case you were wondering, Frisco, Texas, was #1.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options, all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures.

During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care.

Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group.

New Website Design Puts Important City Information At Your Fingertips

verything you need to know about living or working in Weston is now just a click (or three) away. The City of Weston recently launched a redesigned website which makes services and information more accessible and service-centric.

“The new service-centric approach allows users to get right to the services desired most,” explains Director of Communications Denise Barrett-Miller.

“Starting on the homepage, users will find tabs with our most requested areas of information and services. This continues throughout the website. Each department landing page clearly displays action buttons that take the user to highly requested services.”

The goal is to put vital information no more than three clicks away. According to Barrett-Miller, “In 2017, the City Manager’s budget theme was ‘three clicks away’ and placed an emphasis in the upcoming years on enhancing our technology to improve our delivery of services and that our online services should be no more than three clicks away. We worked hard to restructure and rearchitect our website to, in fact, get the end user to their intended question within three clicks.”

The City of Weston website offers a plethora of information about every city department, as well as

services such as police, fire, building code, public works, garbage and recycling. There is information about the history of Weston, its demographics and accomplishments. The City Projects section allows residents to track various projects taking place within Weston. In the Schools section, students can register for high school service hours, and parents can find school boundary maps and school grades.

n the event of a medical emergency, such as injury, stroke, or cardiac arrest, world-class medical care is readily available in Cleveland Clinic Florida’s expanded Emergency Services Department. The state-of-the-art facility opened last month as part of the newly constructed hospital tower. The fivestory, 221-square-foot addition to the Weston campus expands capacity by 50 percent.

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.

Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left.

Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood.

Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists.

I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more…

Harvest Drive Teaches Kids Kindness

t’s hard to believe that Harvest Drive started in 2002 as a simple canned good drive at Country Isles Elementary School to help families in need within the school. Twenty-six years later, the children helping children charity program has expanded to include almost every school in Broward County, including every Weston school. Harvest Drive now serves 2,400 families each holiday season, providing Thanksgiving meals for 10,000 people.

Although its reach has increased, Harvest Drive Inc. Founder Renee Herman says it remains true to its roots. “Since day one, our mission has always been to teach children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others. They are learning that kindness really does

matter. It’s a lesson that many of our kids take into adulthood. Every year I’m touched by the number of new young adults who call and ask if they can come back to ‘harvest’ with us.”

Herman says she is moved every year by the way students step up and take control of the nonperishable food collections. Cypress Bay High School serves as one of Harvest Drive’s 14 distribution sites.

Donations from Weston families will feed approximately 75 families in our community, along with another 100 families at a benefactor school in East Fort Lauderdale. To help fulfill this goal, the Cypress Bay Student Government Association hosted Harvest Drive Collection Days at local Publix supermarkets, collecting donations from shoppers.

Harvest Drive seeks non-perishable items for Thanksgiving dinner, as well as everyday grocery staples such as canned tuna, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, macaroni and cheese, rice,

pasta, and pancake mix. NO GLASS, please. Grocery gift cards and monetary donations are welcome to purchase perishable items. In addition, Harvest Drive collects donations of personal care items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, dish soap, and laundry detergent.

Donations can be delivered to Western High School on Harvest Drive Community Drop-off Day, which is Friday, November 16th, from 3-10pm.

Volunteers will be on hand to help unload your car.

Because hunger is a year-round issue, Herman says Harvest Drive launched its Helping Hands Box program two years ago. This allows partner organizations to help pack boxes of food to deliver to families in need. She says it’s a great team-building exercise for companies and organizations of all sizes.

Mayor’s Challenge Fosters Friendly Competition Between Weston Schools

he race is on to see which elementary school will win the 2018 Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge and take home the coveted Commission Cup. Imagine Charter School at Weston has held the title for the past seven years.

The Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge One-Mile Family Health Walk is part of the festivities at the 21st annual Rotary Club of Weston’s Run For Tomorrow on December 9th. The Mayor’s Challenge began as a way to encourage parents and schools to join together in teaching children the importance of fitness and nutritional eating for improved physical and mental health. Weston elementary schools

compete to see which schools will have the largest number of participants in the One-Mile Family Health Walk, as a percentage of its enrollment. The top school will get the Commission Cup trophy and the top three schools will each receive a cash prize.

Mayor Daniel Stermer believes a little healthy competition is a good thing. Last year’s race saw record-setting participation, with all seven elementary schools represented and a total of 2,800 walkers, including more than 600 students.

“Last year saw more competition than ever between schools in Weston and we hope that 2018 will surpass that,” states Mayor Stermer, who delights in presenting the Commission Cup to the winning school each year, handing the trophy over to the principal and excited students.

The Mayor’s Challenge One-Mile Family Health Walk is open to all Weston elementary students,

as well as their families and friends. There is no cost to participate, but students must pre-register.

Registration information is available on the City of Weston and Weston Rotary Club websites.

Following the Mayor’s Challenge walk, families are encouraged to attend the Rotary Fun and Health Festival, which runs until 1pm. It will feature music, entertainment, vendors, educational exhibits as well as a Children’s Fun Zone, fitness lessons and obstacle courses.

housands of runners are expected to take part in the 21st annual Rotary Run for Tomorrow on Sunday, December 9th. It’s the largest annual run and community wellness event in Weston. It features a 5K, Half Marathon, and 1-Mile Family Health Walk, followed by the Fitness and Health Festival.

The Run for Tomorrow is the Rotary Club of Weston’s primary charity fundraiser. In its 21-year history, it has generated well over $1 million for local charities, non-profit organizations, and The Rotary Foundation. Harvest Drive, HOPE Outreach, LifeNet4Families, Sandy Nininger Jr. State Veterans’ Nursing Home, and the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center are just a few of the local beneficiaries.

Activities include live music, stage performances, obstacle courses and fitness competitions, food trucks, and more. Children will enjoy face painting, bounce houses, balloon twisters, and the chance to paint a fire truck.

Having a Thankful and Safe Thanksgiving

BY DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN s we gear up for the holiday season ahead of us, let’s take time to remind ourselves of the truly irreplaceable assets in our lives – our family and friends – and be thankful for them. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services would like to wish you and your family a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

As we gather around the kitchen to test new recipes, bake scrumptious desserts and prepare the family feast, we are reminded that cooking fires are the number one cause of house fires throughout the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) the U.S. suffers from an average of 166,100 house fires each year (approximately 455 house fires per day). During the Thanksgiving holiday, those statistics rise to over 1,700 house fires per day, four times greater at risk, with the day before Thanksgiving almost as high.

The U.S. Fire Administration reported that two-thirds of home cooking fires started when food or other cooking materials caught fire. Over half began on the stove top; frying causing the greatest risk.

Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor of these and all residential fires in the United States – many of which result in injuries and fatalities. The great news is, an ounce of prevention can minimize your risk from suffering this tragedy. ▸▸ Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. Keep an extinguisher, pot or pan lid nearby to smother the fire should things flare up. NEVER run through your house with a pan on fire.

At best you will suffer from serious burns; more often, you will spread the fire throughout your house. ▸▸ Stay in the home when baking your turkey and check on it frequently. If you see flames do not open the oven door, turn off the oven and call 9-1-1. ▸▸ Keep children away from the stove. Weston BSO Fire Rescue Teaches Children That Firefighters Are Their Friends

C

rews from BSO Fire Rescue & Emergency Services have been busy visiting Weston elementary schools and preschools talking to children about fire safety.

One of their main messages being “firefighters are your friends.”

“It is important to talk to young children about fire safety, so they are prepared and know what to do in the event of a fire emergency,” explains Life Safety Educator Melanie Brocato.

“Ultimately, we want children to be able to identify fire hazards in an age appropriate manner, so they may avoid fire-related emergencies, especially ones that may be preventable. We want children to know what to do if they see or find matches and lighters, as well as where to go and what to do if they must evacuate in a firerelated emergency.”

Prevention is the focus of the fire prevention presentations. Brocato says the motivation behind the presentations is to “not have a fire rescue crew go out on an emergency call that could have been prevented.”

In addition to promoting fire safety, these school presentations also teach children that firefighters are their friends. Often times in emergency situations, children are scared of firefighters because they are completely covered by their firefighting gear. It is important for children to understand, ahead of an emergency or fire, that the fire rescue personnel entering their home with the big coats and masks are there to help them; they should not hide from firefighters calling out for them in a smoke-filled room.

“We want children to know that firefighters are there to help them, so they should not feel afraid or hide from them,” explains Brocato. For this reason, during the school visits children are able to meet firefighters and see their equipment and the fire trucks.

National Fire Prevention Week was celebrated last month. The National Fire Protection Agency sponsors this annual program, promoting educational messages and fire safety tips. The 2018 education campaign theme was “Look. Listen. Learn. Be

aware. Fire can happen anywhere.”

To deliver that message, fire rescue crews visited all the elementary schools in Weston, along with several private schools and preschools. According to Brocato, their education program consisted of an interactive scavenger hunt presentation to help students identify fire safety tools in their school.

“The presentation helps students identify the many safety resources in place to help keep them safe at school.”

Weston Fire Rescue offers a variety of fire prevention and education programs for the community as well, including arson awareness, cooking safety, fireworks safety, CPR and AED training, and more.

Weston Town Center Craft & Talent Show Features Local Artists

ove over America’s Got Talent, now it’s time for Weston residents to shine. The Weston Town Center is hosting its third annual Craft & Talent Show on Sunday, November 18th.

It’s an afternoon of musical entertainment and shopping featuring the talents of your friends and neighbors.

Weston Town Center plays host to a variety of cultural arts programs from the popular Celebrate the Arts day and Symphony of the Americas’ annual outdoor pops concert to the free concerts every Friday night. But the Craft & Talent Show is something special. It brings local crafts-

men and musicians together for a free, family-friendly afternoon.

“The Craft & Talent Show helps unite the Weston community through an engaging event showcasing and promoting local artists,” explains Angie Paulson, Director of Marketing and Events for Weston Town Center. “We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the musical entertainment and purchase items from local crafters. It’s the perfect place to shop for one of a kind gifts for the upcoming holiday season.”

The craft show will feature a wide variety of crafts ranging from painting and jewelry to clothing and glasswork. Local crafters will exhibit and sell their wares at the craft show. A portion of the proceeds from

the sale of these items will be donated to the HOPE Outreach Center. This organization is committed to Helping Other People Everyday. Its programs and services offer a hand up to people who are unable to make ends meet due to job losses, disabilities, health crises, and other emergencies.

Carreño Music Academy is coordinating the talent show portion of the day. It will feature performances by singers and musicians, both children and adults. Instructors from local music academies will judge the performances and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

In addition to the talent show and craft tents, the event will feature a Kids Zone with activities such as face painting, an arts and crafts table, and more. Food vendors will also be available.

Hometown Heroes Promote Food Allergy Awareness Team Sparkles-Tobias Financial Advisors prepares for the Southeast Florida Food Allergy Heroes Walk.

here are heroes in our midst. Weston residents Andrea and Matt Saneholtz are chairing the Southeast Florida Food Allergy Heroes Walk, which takes place on November 11th at Plantation Central Park. The Heroes Walk raises funds and awareness to benefit FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education).

The Saneholtzs first became involved with FARE four years ago after their oldest daughter, Nina, suffered a severe allergic reaction after eating a single peanut M&M. “She broke out into hives, her lips became very swollen, she was lethargic, and eventually started to vomit,” shares Andrea in describing that terrifying day. “After extensive allergy testing, we learned that Nina had a severe allergy to peanuts.”

The family’s life would never be the same.

Andrea and Matt turned to FARE for help. The Nina and Vera Saneholtz painted teal pumpkins for Halloween to indicate homes with allergy-friendly treats. organiza-

tion’s extensive resources allowed the couple to become educated on how to keep Nina safe and motivated them to spread awareness about food allergies.

“We attended our first Food Allergy Heroes Walk about three years ago and look forward to it every year as a way to celebrate our local and national food allergy heroes, while raising awareness and funding for food allergy research,” notes Andrea.

The couple is committed to doing what they can to better the lives of those, like Nina, living with food allergies. According to Matt, “It is our main objective to show our daughters that one person can make a difference and that action is powerful. As this year’s walk chairs, we are doing everything possible to spread the word. We are distributing flyers, connecting with people via social media and email, and reaching out to local businesses, schools and establishments to increase involvement. Everyone is welcome to come out to support the food allergy community at the Heroes Walk.”

Nina and her younger sister, Vera, are doing their part to support the cause through the Teal Pumpkin Project. This initiative allows people to display a teal

pumpkin on Halloween, indicating that they are distributing allergy-friendly or non-food items.

“For children with food allergies, Halloween can be very difficult,” explains Andrea. “To help spread a message of allergy awareness, the girls marbleized pumpkins, using teal paint, and sold them in our community. All of the proceeds will be put toward our team’s fundraising efforts.”

The Saneholtz family’s team is named Team Sparkles – Tobias Financial Advisors. As of this writing, it is the number one team for fundraising. They invite the Weston community to join them in walking to support FARE. “We’re walking in and raising funds for the Food Allergy Heroes Walk to help FARE fulfill its mission to improve the quality of life and the health of individuals with food allergies, and to provide them hope through the promise of new treatments,” states Matt.

SoFlo Health Host Remains True To His Roots

unter Franqui grew up in Weston. He discovered his life’s calling while a student at Cypress Bay High School. His work with the school’s TV Production program was the first step in realizing his future career in television. Today, Hunter is host of SoFlo Health, a health, wellness, fitness and lifestyle show airing on Local 10 (WPLG).

At Cypress Bay, the TV production students produce a daily and weekly show for the school.

“When I first began, I was entirely behind the scenes, but after my best friend quit his position as a main anchor, I took over,” explains Franqui. “Cypress Bay TV gave me the opportunity to try TV as a career before I entered college. I learned that television production was a combination of what I loved: psychology, storytelling, fast paced work, business and so much more.”

After graduating in 2009, Hunter attended Florida International University. While at FIU, he did freelance work for ESPN and the Miami Heat.

During his senior year, he began working at Local 10 in the creative services department, but he always wanted to get back on air.

“My first on-air work came through SoFlo Taste, hosted by Chef Michelle Bernstein,” he shares. “I went to different restaurants, food festivals, and providers of taste to try their food and talk about it.”

to do more, so he went to talk to the station’s general manager. “I felt I was ready for something bigger, but I didn’t want to do news. Fortunately, I have an extremely supportive team at Local 10. I began crafting a show of my own and sharing some of the ideas with (the GM). He had plans for a health show, and before I formally pitched my idea, SoFlo Health was born, and I was given the opportunity to host it.”

The show premiered last spring and on it Franqui encourages “people to take their health seriously, try out different methods to improve their life, and have fun and live their life in the process.”

Franqui considers himself lucky to have grown up in Weston and now live here as an adult. “As a kid I appreciated all the parks nearby and the close connection of the schools to the community. You always felt like friends were close by.”

That close-knit feeling is something he relishes as an adult. “I know people everywhere I go here, and that gives me a great sense of home. I feel like a lot of places have lost that hometown feel in South Florida, but Weston always has it.”

In 2018 alone, Weston was named by Money Magazine as one of its Best Places to Live in America; by Verizon Business as one of the Best Small Cities for Small Businesses; listed in Trip Advisor’s 16 Great Towns to Visit in 2018; and ranked in the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. for 2018 by Neighborhood Scout at number eight. I am very thankful, and very proud.

These recognitions are hard earned yet are not sought after. A city cannot apply to be selected as a Best Places to Live recipient. We are immensely proud of this recognition for our residents, our business leaders, our small business shops, our students and school administrators, our civic organizations, sports leagues, performing arts organizations, volunteers, and of course, our City staff that work so hard each day to make your day - a better day. This is not the first year of these recognitions and we envision not the last.

Each year, being the community that Weston is, we step up and help those within our neighborhood with food insecurity by supporting Harvest Drive.

Harvest Drive, initiated at County Isles Elementary School, is a fundraising and food gathering effort working with the Broward County Public School System and others to provide a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries and necessities to over 2,400 families across Broward County, including families here in Weston. BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK ovember begins the holiday season and the season of giving. Floridians are extremely generous and give of themselves for those whom we think are truly in need. Charities depend on the generosity of donors to support them for various causes and purposes. Many charitable organizations use your donations wisely; however, some may misrepresent their fundraising intentions or solicit for phony causes. Keep these tips in mind before making a donation.

Watch Out for Scams Scammers take advantage of people by pretending to be a real charity in order to commit fraud. Frequently, bogus charities will exploit a recent natural disaster or tragedy, promising to use the donations to aid victims. It is important not to judge a charity solely on its name. Many organizations may use names similar to well-known charities and organizations.

Check Out a Charity Before Donating Ask the charity or organization why it is asking for donations and what purpose will be served. Florida law gives the prospective donor the right to request and receive a copy of a charity’s financial report before donating. You can also visit our online Gift Givers’ Guide to view a charity’s financial information and current registration status, or call 1-800-HELPFLA (435-7352). Be aware that many telephone appeals for funds are made by paid solicitors, not volunteers. The solicitors often work for a for-profit firm hired by the organization. Telemarketing is expensive and may entail substantial fundraising costs. Ask the solicitor what portion of your donation will be retained by the charity.

Avoid High Pressure Tactics Some solicitors use high-pressure tactics and may even offer to send a “runner” to pick up your money immediately. Don’t feel forced to make a quick decision without getting all the information that you need to make an informed decision. Reputable charities and organizations are just as happy to receive your donation tomorrow as today. If you decide to make a donation, never send cash. Typically, it is best to pay by check, made payable to the charity itself, not to the solicitor. If you decide to make a donation online, look for indicators that the site is secure, such as a URL that begins with “https:” (the “s” stands for secure).

Keep Good Records Always obtain and save a printed copy of your donation or a receipt showing the amount of the contribution. Not all organizations soliciting in the name of benevolence are true charities eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. If this is important to you, ask about the organization’s federal and state eligibility for receiving tax deductible donations. Typically, such donations fall under Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3).

All charities soliciting within the state of Florida (excluding religious, educational, political and governmental agencies) are required to register and file financial information with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Gator Run Elementary Principal Initiates #RideTheSchoolBusHome Challenge

ator Run Elementary School Principal Keith Peters strives to find opportunities to connect with his students, whether that be a casual conversation in the hallway, eating lunch together, or sharing a seat on the school bus. Now he’s challenging his colleagues to do just that with the #RideTheSchoolBusHome Challenge.

Mr. Peters, who prefers the title “lead learner” to “principal”, says he likes to shake up people’s perception of a school administrator. One of the ways he is doing that is by striking up informal conversations and connecting with his students.

“Sometimes I walk part of the way to the edge of the developments where the students live, or I will sit and talk with students in our car pick-up line, or I will ride the school bus,” he explains. “It’s really all about relationships and meeting students where they are. They can’t wait to share what’s going on in their lives.”

Mr. Peters tries to ride the school bus whenever

he has a chance. “Honestly, it’s fun to surprise the students by showing up on their school bus. The kids really freak out. It’s kind of hard to calm them down and they all want to sit next to me.”

He believes that if he can be a hero or a role model to his students, then he has done his job. “I want to be someone that they look up to and hopefully remember forever.”

It’s not just the students who like it when Mr. Peters rides the bus. “The other fun part is seeing the parents’ faces when I walk off the bus to give high-fives or hugs,” he shares. “I think that parents like to see an involved principal; someone they know genuinely cares about their kids.”

That’s why he is challenging other principals to connect with their students by riding the school bus.

He’s using social media to reach out to other administrators through #PrincipalsInAction. “It’s basically a group of principals trying to motivate each other to do what’s best for kids,” explains Mr. Peters.

The bond Mr. Peters forges during these bus trips

is priceless. “Informal opportunities, such as riding the bus, provide me with insight into their lives both in and out of our school. The conversations I have with my students drive my philosophy about trying to make their lives better.”

Riding the bus also provides an opportunity to talk to the bus drivers. “These are some of the most important people in our students’ lives. How they greet children each morning can affect their entire day,” notes Mr. Peters.

He says he really enjoys his conversations with the bus drivers while they’re taking him back to school. “I love getting to hear about their lives and what they think about their role in our kids’ education.”

American Heritage School Leads Country in National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

merican Heritage School (AHS), in Plantation, has the highest number of National Merit Semifinalists of any private school in the country. It is also has the more Semifinalists than any other high school in Florida for the 9th consecutive year.

Seventy seniors at the school were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) this year. In fact, one in four of the Class of 2019 is a nation-

The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest.

Only 1% of the 1.6 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year.

The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT in their respective states. About half of the Semifinalists go on to win

scholarships. The NMSC will choose the winners of the $2,500 scholarships from the pool of finalists in the spring.

Eagle Point Elementary Students Soar for Spirit Sticks

S

tudents at Eagle Point Elementary School proudly display their Spirit Sticks on their backpacks. These brightly-colored embroidered patches serve as tangible reminders of positive character and leadership traits such as kindness, citizenship, effort and initiative.

The school administration and the Eagle Point Elementary Foundation (parent volunteer organization and fundraising arm) introduced the program this year as a way to foster a positive and rewarding school environment. Spirit Sticks are being used to support the school’s Leader in Me program as well as the school district’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) initiative.

“The goal is that the Spirit Sticks will motivate students to develop self-discipline and selfconfidence as well as recognize the contributions of others,” explains Eagle Point Foundation President Sophia LoMonaco. “Spirit Sticks serve as positive, descriptive acknowledgements that remind students to choose responsibility not only for themselves but with others in mind.”

Spirit Sticks also promote leadership, something the school has been teaching for the past five years as a Leader in Me school. Based on Steven Covey’s 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, the program empowers students to demonstrate leadership

qualities at a young age. The seven leadership habits are: be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win-win; seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize; and sharpen the saw.

“Students who display these habits in extraordinary ways throughout their day are awarded Spirit Sticks,” explains Principal Christine de Zayas.

To start the school year, each student was given a custom made “EPE Great Happens Here” Spirit Stick. Children can earn additional Spirit Sticks for good behavior. Students can be recognized not only by their teachers but also by administrators, front office staff, the school resource officer, cafeteria employees, and custodial employees.

Heel Pain In Children

D

oes your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease).

This is actually a condition and not a disease. It occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.

CAUSES: Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease) can be caused by: growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel; overactivity in children commonly between the ages of eight and 14; tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially the calf muscle; flatfeet; poor shoe gear or

walking barefoot; or growth spurts.

SYMPTOMS: Symptoms include: discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity; occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle; stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running; pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity; and pain that is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time and then tries to get up and walk.

SIGNS: Signs you should watch for in your child include: tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel; walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground; discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel; and limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens.

TREATMENT: There are various forms of treatment available including: modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot; rest and ice; stretching exercises;

proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel; night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament; taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone; custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment; occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing; and physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate.

BY IVIS MATEOS ith the holiday season coming up and all the craziness of the world that surrounds us, let’s remember that fall is a time of transformation; the weather changes, leaves will fall, the foliage transforms by letting go of the old and making space for new growth. Let’s take this holiday time off with our children to learn how to daydream again!

Psychologist Mary Helen Immordino-Yang tells us that our brain works by utilizing sets of networks.

There are two specific networks that help us see life from different perspectives. One helps us look out to gather information and to interact with the outside world and the other helps us look inward to do independent thinking and reflections.

For proper neurological development and the predisposition of our children’s brain, both systems must be well balanced. Moving back and forth from a quiet place of solitude (our daydreaming state), to a place of direct contact with the outside world, allows our children to utilize both networks.

Children, as well as most adults in our culture, are over exposed to the outside world. We are constantly utilizing the network that helps us engage with people, with media, with ongoing traffic and outside stimulations.

However, we are running low on the usage of the daydreaming network; the network that allows for idle time, solitude or better described by children as boredom. Overscheduling activities with our kids give us little time to let go of tensions creating an imbalance in brain function.

Be intentional and encourage idle time for your children. This allows for daydreaming time, the moment where our network helps develop creativity and evaluation of our own thoughts. A simple walk outside, time off from electronics, or an empty notebook and pencil will encourage a child to reflect on their imagination, create stories, imagine, fantasize and create interior monologues.

Some studies show that daydreaming helps children better handle life situations. It plays an important role in the emotional wellbeing of the child, lowering the chances of depression and negative feelings.

Let’s be intentional this holiday season to begin an inward and outward transformation by allowing ourselves the guiltless time to daydream with our children. Happy Holidays.

Would My Child Benefit from Sedation Dentistry? (Part I)

BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN ike the answer to most medical questions, the answer is not so straightforward. There are many factors which go into the decision-making process.

These factors include maturity/anxiety of the child, type of sedation available and financial resources available to the family. In our experience, the consideration of each of these variables is of upmost importance in consistently making the right decision for the pediatric dental patient.

The first step in the process is to gather all of the available information. This is accomplished by performing a complete assessment of the patient. The information gathered includes the obvious dental needs, diet, home care, age, emotional maturity, and dental anxiety. Most decisions regarding the treatment plan can be made at this stage.

For example, a two-year-old who suffers from carious lesions (cavities) on all primary (baby) teeth would likely require a more comprehensive sedation in order to complete the entire dental treatment in a non-traumatic manner. A child at this age does not have the cognitive and emotional ability to complete the treatment without potential long-term negative effects. In other words, without the right approach this child may become an adult with a long -term phobia of dentistry. On the other hand, a 16-year-old who has been consistent with regular checkups and has already had dental treatment in the past, would unlikely require sedation. Most other scenarios fall somewhere in between.

Once the needs are established, the type of sedation would be considered. Types of sedation range from simple anxiolysis with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) administered in the dental office setting to general anesthesia done in a hospital setting. This is where the experience and intuition of the pediatric dentist is of most importance. Ideally, we would like to use the medication facilitating the completion of the treatment with the least sedative effect.

Next month’s editorial will review the various types of dental sedations in more detail. It is at this point, that the parent/guardian must be informed and educated as to the process. For example, inhalation agents like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) completely exit the body prior to the end of a procedure. Other medications, depending on their route of administration, exit the body more slowly and prior arrangements should be made for an adult to sit with the child on the drive back home from the dental visit.

Lastly, financials should be considered when making final decisions. Insurance breakdowns provided by the major insurance carriers are usually very specific as to what will be covered in most situations. However, if there is any ambiguity an estimation of benefits (“EOB”) may be requested from the insurance company prior to the start of treatment. Finances may also direct treatment. For example, in a situation where there is a lot of dental work to be completed, doing so under a “deeper sedation” may seem more expensive because of the higher cost of administration.

However, if there is a large amount of dental work needed, doing so under a “lighter” form of sedation may result in the need for multiple visits. Possibly costing more in both time and money.

Our advice is to focus on prevention. The sooner healthy habits are established, the less likely extensive treatment will be needed. Additionally, early exposure to the dental office (when dental work is not yet needed) decreases anxiety levels once dental treatment is necessary. There are also many benefits to the development of a relationship. The child is more comfortable and is more easily read by the doctor. Difficult conversations between parent and doctor are easily handled once there is trust.

Gator Run Students Share Love of Reading

S

tudents at Gator Run Elementary School have always been encouraged to read for pleasure and share their favorite stories with classmates. This year’s introduction of Beanstack is making that even easier.

“Beanstack is a digital book logging program that helps our students remember the books that they have read so that they can easily recommend them to friends,” explains Media Specialist Elayne Hollander, noting that students will be able to add to their list each year. “It helps to promote literacy by encouraging conversations about books and promoting positive feelings about reading.”

All Gator Run students are using the program, as are students at all Broward County elementary schools.

It’s particularly helpful for the county-wide Reading Across Broward challenge, which allows students to earn badges and certificates based on the number of books read. Beanstack, itself, also offers incentives.

“This program helps students talk about books by giving them a space to

keep a list of the books they’ve read, and a place to have their voice heard by writing reviews,” explains Ms. Hollander. “Beanstack also offers the incentive of badges and certificates so that students can be proud of the numbers of books they’ve read.”

Ms. Hollander says reading for pleasure has many benefits for children both in and out of the classroom. “Academically, students that enjoy reading have better vocabulary, better spelling, better problem-solving skills, and are overall better readers. In general, they have positive feelings about learning.

Socially, these students show more

empathy and creativity.”

Beanstack is just one of many programs in place at Gator Run to promote the importance and joy of reading. “In every classroom, teachers encourage reading and discussing books. Some classes are using Flipgrid for this, a program that allows students to share their voice with a video answering a question about the book. Other students watch that video and give them likes and/ or video responses,” explains Ms. Hollander. “Each room has a Bingo Board displayed where students are trying to read certain types of books.

They note the book that was read,

sparking conversations. For example, if a student writes that they have read Disney After Dark by Ridley Pearson as ‘A Book That Takes Place In Florida,’ other people become interested, ask about the story, and often look for it in the media center.”

Ms. Hollander says the love of reading is infectious. “Students are excitedly giving book recommendations all over the school – to their friends, to their teachers, even to the whole school if they open our school day on the intercom with Principal Peters. Amazing reading conversations are happening throughout our school.”

Book Club Inspires Indian Trace Elementary Teachers To Reignite Passion

ndian Trace Elementary School offers book clubs for its students and faculty. This year’s staff book club selection is creating quite a roar on campus, as teachers are learning to teach like a pirate.

“Each year interested staff members participate in book studies over the course of the year,” explains Principal Amy Winder. “We meet monthly and discuss the book and its application/ implication to our instructional practices. We decided that we would focus this year around one book, Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess.”

According to the author, Teach Like a Pirate is part inspirational manifesto and part practical roadmap. The book offers inspiration, practical techniques, and innovative ideas to help teachers increase student engagement, boost creativity, and transform their life as an educator.

Teaching like a pirate has nothing to do with the dictionary definition and everything to do with the spirit of a PIRATE – passion, immersion, rapport, ask and analyze, transformation, and enthusiasm.

Fourth grade teacher Katie Monioudis is a member of the book club.

She says each of those terms is addressed in different chapters of the book.

“The first chapter was all about passions: content passion, professional passion, and personal passion,” explains Ms. Monioudis. “While we are not all passionate about everything we teach, we are passionate about teaching and that’s what makes lessons better.

Everglades Elementary Celebrates Cultural Diversity

eston is a melting pot of cultures and no where is that more evident than in the schools. Everglades Elementary School is celebrating its diverse student population by encouraging students to proudly showcase their cultural heritage.

“It is important for students to share their cultures with peers to build awareness and understanding,” states Literacy Specialist Anabela Fernandes, who serves as the school’s Equity Liaison. “By taking pride in their heritage, students build confidence and a sense of self. This confidence flows into their everyday lives and helps them to foster healthy social relationships. Social-emotional well-being is crucial to the attainment and mastery of academic skills.”

Throughout the school year, a different country, continent and/or culture will be highlighted every month. Hispanic culture was celebrated first, to

coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month.

Displays were posted to educate students about significant accomplishments by famous Hispanics such as Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, baseball player Roberto Clemente, astronaut Ellen Ochoa, and labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta.

The morning announcements also highlighted the contributions of Hispanic Americans such as Hilda Solis, who was Secretary of Labor and served in the House of Representatives. According to Mrs. Fernandes, “She was the first woman to be a recipient of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. We want our students to understand that dignity and courage come from all cultures and that their culture is an asset that they should be proud of.”

Cultural pride is evident in the incredible projects the children have created to represent their cultural heritage. These projects included students making dolls dressed according to their culture, re-creating the flag of their culture on a hand cut-out and then putting all the cut-outs together to create a unified globe, and creating a “culture quilt”, with each student completing a square featuring their country’s flag surrounded by the rituals, music, food and culture of that country. “By having all cultures represented, students see a reflection of themselves and feel a sense of belonging,” explains Mrs. Fernandes. “It also shows students that the school is proud of who they are and is happy to have them here.”

13 Cypress Bay Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

eventeen students from Cypress Bay High School have been named Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Cypress Bay had the most Semifinalists of any Broward County Public School.

“This is an incredible honor for Cypress Bay High School and we are so proud of our students for being recognized for their outstanding scores and academic achievements,” said Marlene Sanders, Guidance Director at Cypress Bay High School.

MBE 2.0 Aftercare Program Creates Life Long Learners

tudents at Manatee Bay Elementary School actually look forward to staying after school.

That’s because they want to participate in the school’s new MBE 2.0 aftercare program. It offers a carefully crafted mix of enrichment programs that cater to all interests.

“Our mission statement is ‘We are a Community of Life Long Learning,’” shares MBE 2.0 Director Stephanie Murphy. “Here, students can explore and challenge themselves through various activities and programs.”

Academic programs include Robotics, STEM, Foreign Language, as well as American Sign Language. Students enrolled in the foreign language program are currently learning Spanish; next semester they will study French.

The Robotics and STEM programs build upon Manatee Bay’s already exceptional academic curriculum. According to Mrs. Murphy, “We balance learning and fun at MBE 2.0 and we believe elementary school builds the foundation and sets the tone of their lifetime of learning, so we offer subject matters our students are taught during their school

Giving the Gift of Health to Yourself and Others this Holiday Season

ith the holidays just around the corner, gift giving is on everyone’s mind and it is so easy to get behind. Although we make our list and have good intentions, we often ultimately find ourselves in a rut and automatically just quickly “gifting”.

Additionally, we feel the stress of navigating our friends’ and families’ expectations for where we should be giving our time during the holidays. This charity event, that party, our partner’s parties, etc., which are all good things but in the flurry of it all, we tend to forget the life-changing gift of self-care and helping others experience self-care.

Living in today’s hyper-stimulated, fast-paced world has people feeling rushed and stressed. Perhaps even you too are feeling this and have begun to shift and invest in your own mind/body health in a way not considered before. If so, this holiday season may be a good time to consider adopting a health theme for your holiday shopping.

Gifting health during the holidays, or any other time of the year, can have a lasting impact on someone. In the field of cosmetic surgery, often times patients will plan a surgery, or schedule a more costly procedure or series of treatments around a holiday or birthday. In this case, large gift cards are wonderful.

However, costly gifts are not always necessary when considering gifting health. There are also small, meaningful ways to give the gift of health. To help, I have put together some ideas that serve as enjoyable and thoughtful gifts, and that can be motivational nudges toward living a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, because the habits of your friends and family can often rub off on others, in some ways it’s like giving a gift to yourself as well! Here are a few considerations when giving such a gift.

1. The gift should always be easy to use and considerate of the person’s lifestyle, health history and of any health goals they have mentioned.

2. Starting small can help start someone down the beginning of a healthier path. Examples could be a gift certificate to a spa or wellness center where the recipient may try a variety of services such as yoga, a mindfulness session, massage therapy, or a facial or aromatherapy session.

3. Healthy hostess gifts can be nice and fun. In this case, a gourmet heath supportive tea, food item like dark chocolate, or gift certificate to a healthy restaurant could be nice.

4. Consider giving health supportive treatments or gifts for someone suffering from cancer or any other chronic health issue. In this case, an acupuncture or reiki session or a nutrition consult could be helpful. Books or magazine subscriptions are also nice.

Whatever the gift is, giving the gift of health sends the greater message of caring for the Mind, Body and Soul and can mean the world to someone. Best wishes for a healthy and happy holiday season!

Protecting Your Eyes At Work

BY DR. JANE THERRIEN ye injuries in the workplace are very common. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that every day about 2,000 U.S. workers sustain job-related eye injuries that require medical treatment . However, safety experts and eye doctors believe the right eye protection can lessen the severity or even prevent 90 percent of these eye injuries.

Chemicals or foreign objects in the eye and cuts or scrapes on the cornea are common eye injuries that occur at work. Other common eye injuries come from splashes with grease and oil, burns from steam, ultraviolet or infrared radiation exposure, and flying wood or metal chips.

In addition, health care workers, laboratory and janitorial staff, and other workers may be at risk of acquiring infectious diseases from eye exposure. Some infectious diseases can be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the eye.

This can occur through direct exposure to blood splashes, respiratory droplets generated during coughing, or from touching the eyes with contaminated fingers or other objects.

Workers experience eye injuries on the job for two major reasons: they were not wearing eye protection, or they were wearing the wrong kind of protection for the job.

Workplace eye protection is needed when the following potential eye hazards are present: projectiles (dust, concrete, metal, wood and other particles); chemicals (splashes and fumes); radiation (especially visible light, ultraviolet radiation, heat or infrared radiation, and lasers); and bloodborne pathogens (hepatitis or HIV) from blood and body fluids Some working conditions include multiple eye hazards. The proper eye protection takes all hazards into account.

There are four things you can do to protect your eyes from injury: ▸▸ Know the eye safety dangers at your work. ▸▸ Eliminate hazards before starting work by using machine guards, work screens or other engineering controls. ▸▸ Use proper eye protection. ▸▸ Keep your safety eyewear in good condition and have it replaced if it becomes damaged.

If you experience pain in the eye, blurred vision, or loss of vision, seek medical attention immediately. Several simple first aid steps can and should be taken until medical assistance is obtained.

First aid for chemicals in the eye: Immediately flush the eye with water for at least 15 minutes. Place the eye under a faucet or shower, use a garden hose, or pour water into the eye from a clean container. If you are wearing contact lenses, immediately remove them before flushing the eye. Do not try to neutralize the chemical with other substances. Do not bandage the eye.

First aid for particles in the eye: Do not rub the eye. Try to let your tears wash the speck out or irrigate the eye with an artificial tear solution. Try lifting the upper eyelid outward and down over the lower eyelid to remove the particle. If the particle does not wash out, keep the eye closed, bandage it lightly and seek medical care.

First aid for blows to the eye: Gently apply a cold compress without putting pressure on the eye. Crushed ice in a plastic bag can be placed gently on the injured eye to reduce pain and swelling. In cases of severe pain or reduced vision, seek immediate medical care.

First aid for cuts and punctures to the eye or eyelid: Do not wash out the eye.

Do not attempt to remove an object that is stuck in the eye. Cover the eye with a rigid shield, like the bottom half of a paper cup. Seek immediate medical care.

The Basic Issue of Divorce

BY EVAN BARON t seems that Divorce is often misunderstood.

Unfortunately, everyone seems to know someone who is either going through a divorce or has been divorced. Everyone has heard various “horror stories” about someone’s divorce case. Many people who come to my office for a consultation are lost or confused as to what may lie ahead. A common question is “how do I start this?” Even though every case is obviously different from the next, most cases deal with the same general issues one might encounter in a divorce. I thought it might be helpful to briefly touch upon each one of these.

Equitable Distribution This is the principle by which assets accumulated and debts incurred during the marriage are divided. In most cases, the division will be an equal division of both assets and debts. This, however, is not always true. Florida Statutes allow a Judge to consider various factors in determining the possibility of an unequal distribution. In addition, non-marital assets (assets owned prior to the marriage or received from a source unconnected with the marriage; such as an inheritance) will not be divided unless these assets were co-mingled with marital assets or gifted to the other spouse.

Alimony Alimony is not an issue in every case. There are a number of factors which must be considered in addressing alimony. There are several different kinds of alimonywhich are contained within the law. The one most people think of is “permanent alimony,” which is a sum of money paid on a monthly income until death or remarriage by the receiving spouse. This is based upon, among other factors, length of marriage, lifestyle of the parties and need and ability.

There are, however, other forms of alimony which can be addressed. These are usually for a specific time period, with a beginning and ending date. These payments can be classified under Rehabilitative Alimony (a sum of money to allow a spouse to further his/her education or training), “Bridge the Gap Alimony” (a sum of money paid monthly for a term of months or years) or Lump Sum Alimony (a lump sum payment).

Child Support Child Support is to be paid by the parent who has the lesser amount of time sharing to the parent who has the greater amount of time sharing, based upon the “net” income of both parties and the Child Support Guidelines. Day care, after school care and health insurance costs for the minor children are additional.

Child Support in Florida ends when a child turns 18, or if he/she has not yet graduated from high school. It can continue until either graduation or the child’s 19th birthday.

Neither parent has a legal obligation to support a child after graduation from high school. There is, therefore, no legal basis to request child support to assist for a college education. If, however, either parent agrees to assist a child through college and it is contained within a written settlement agreement, such a provision is enforceable through the courts.

Some of the organizational skills for quality of life and improved golf are: goal setting, making good conscious choices, adopting positive attitudes and beliefs, relaxation techniques, decision making, and enjoying life/golf in the moment.

Every time you repeat a limiting belief such as one of these, you give it more power in your mind. In golf, as in life, what you think is what you create. Begin to question your beliefs. Is this what you really want to create? Use your awesome power of imagination to practice in your mind what you really want to happen.

When you hear yourself reiterating a negative thought from your past, change the thought in your mind to a positive one. Golfers play golf because it is a challenge.

Challenge yourself to change your beliefs and behavior to achieve the success you desire. Use the feeling that comes up as a cue for you to know whether your concerns are under your control, or out of your control. If you are worried about people or course conditions that you cannot control, replace your limiting thoughts with positive, constructive ones.

For example, if you are anxious on the first tee and usually miss your tee shot because people are watching you, change your thinking to: “I can let go of everything outside of me by letting it become fuzzy. I can focus clearly on seeing my target. I feel my swing tempo. I concentrate on my pre-shot routine to prepare my mind. My first tee shot is easy because I use the club in my bag with the biggest head. It is easy. I can tee it up and sweep through it. I love to hit the first shot of the day.”

To reinforce these thoughts, you can prepare in advance by using mental imagery. Begin by putting yourself in a relaxed state by breathing deeply and releasing all mental and physical tension from your body. Create in detail in your mind the first hole. Mentally create the fairway, trees, bunkers, and yourself on the first tee. Notice that you are affirming your good tee shot with the messages above.

Observe yourself breathing deeply to become relaxed and centered. See yourself going through your physical and mental pre-shot routine. See yourself hitting your very best tee ball (from your past experience) by visualizing and feeling your own smooth, easy, effortless swing. See the ball land on the fairway where you planned.

Feel the emotion of happiness and success.

Your feelings indicate what you need to notice about yourself. Become a better player by monitoring your negative thoughts that make you uneasy, anxious or tense. Know that these thoughts sabotage your performance. Use your mental energies to focus on the things within your control. Spinal Degeneration: An Aging Process?

BY DR. BEHAR AND DR. BROWNER espite medicine’s best efforts, degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis, continues to be one of our society’s most common – and tragic – degenerative diseases. By age 30, about one third of the population will show osteoarthritic changes on spinal x-ray, and by 70 years of age degenerative joint disease is almost universal.

The prevalence of osteoarthritis has lead to two widespread misconceptions. Many people attribute back or neck pain to the presence of spinal degeneration. Similarly, many believe spinal degeneration is a normal and inevitable aging process. Both these traditional beliefs are now starting to be questioned as more, and better, research is expanding our knowledge of this condition.

Although recent medical research has identified a possible genetic component to certain forms of osteoarthritis in certain individuals, spinal degeneration is still considered largely a “wear and tear” condition. In the simplest terms, the spine is comprised of vertebra separated from one another by discs (analogous to cushions or sponges). As we age, these discs undergo subtle biochemical changes resulting in a loss of thickness and cushioning ability. Evidence now suggests these biochemical alterations in the disc may be a product of chronic undernourishment due to faulty spinal mechanics, rather than an inevitable part of the aging phenomenon. Faulty spinal mechanics is primarily the result of accidents, microtrauma and postural distortions. Trauma and abnormal posture produces malalignment of the spine, further contributing to spinal wear and tear.

The major significance of spinal osteoarthritis, however, lies in its effect on the nervous system. Studies show even minor changes in spinal configuration – the beginning stages of the degeneration process – result in compromise of the spinal cord and associated nerve function. As the arthritic changes progress in severity so does nervous system compromise. The potential implications of this are enormous, as science confirms the nervous system controls every tissue, organ and system in the body.

For example, evidence shows there is a direct connection between the nervous and immune systems.

The process of spinal degeneration may not be an inevitable part of aging.

This is evident from the fact many older people have healthy, well-preserved discs and no sign of disc or joint degeneration. Yet severe degenerative change can be seen in young adults if there has been trauma or prolonged, abnormal spinal stress, such as the result of postural distortion and malalignment.

Making Sense of Breast Enhancement

MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. ccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both?

The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra.

When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary.

This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis).

There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. They are: periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T,” or anchor incision, same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging.

A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting.

In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals.

As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed.

Exercising Your Dog

xercise can have many health benefits for your dog. Regular exercise burns calories, reduces appetite, improves muscle tone, increases metabolism, and improves temperature regulation. It can be a valuable contributor to weight loss and maintenance. Exercise can also help stimulate your dog’s mind, thereby preventing boredom and destructive behaviors.

Needs and Precautions Individual exercise needs vary based on breed or breed mix, sex, age, and level of health. If your dog is a six- to 18-month adolescent or a sporting, herding, hound, or terrier breed or mixed breed, your dog’s exercise requirements are high. However, strenuous exercise can cause problems in some dogs, especially those that are not fit or are very young or old. Athletic owners should consider this to avoid overexerting their dogs, especially in hot or humid weather. When starting a new exercise routine, go slowly for the first week to give your dog a chance to adapt to it. On hot or cold days, go easy or rest.

Consult your veterinarian before beginning an exercise program for your dog.

Get Moving Various kinds of exercise can help satisfy your dog’s instinctive urges to dig, herd, chew, retrieve, and chase. Here are some good exercise options for most dogs: ▸▸ Walking or jogging ▸▸ Fetch ▸▸ Playing with other pets ▸▸ Running off leash ▸▸ Swimming (great for arthritic dogs) ▸▸ Tricks for low-calorie treats (see the box for ideas) ▸▸ Tug of war if appropriate for your breed You can help your dog get plenty of exercise by scheduling regular playtimes and walks. For walks, work up to a brisk, ten- to 20-minute walk or jog once or twice a day. If you don’t have time to walk your dog, hire a dog walker. Consider adopting another pet so that your dog has a playmate that encourages activity. If you don’t want to commit to a new pet, try scheduling regular visits with the pet of a friend or relative. Doggy day care centers can also help ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise throughout the day.

Low-Calorie Dog Treats Reward your dog with healthy treats such as apple slices, banana slices, carrot slices, commercial dog treats (low calorie or formulated for a smaller dog), green beans, lean meat (cooked), popcorn (without butter or oil), and unflavored rice cake pieces. Do not feed your dog (or cat) grapes or raisins because they have reportedly caused kidney problems in pets. If your dog has food allergies, consult your veterinarian about which treats are safe and appropriate.

The Weston Rotary Club – Doing Good For Our Community

otary International is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problemsolvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

The Weston Rotary Club is busily preparing for our December Rotary Run, which along with providing money to the Rotary Foundation, provides the club the ability to support local non-profit organizations to help create lasting change in our community. Here are some of the charities we support: ▸▸ Harvest Drive is a yearlong project that culminates in a charitable event every Thanksgiving and involves many of the area public schools and businesses. Rotary supports this initiative in several ways, such as facilitating fundraisers and providing volunteers that help to package the food items and help to distribute the ten bags per family. ▸▸ Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center is a transformative housing facility for mothers and their children.

In addition to volunteering routinely to organize clothing at their “Chic Boutique”, Weston Rotary has taken on a new hands-on project of remodeling one of their therapy rooms. This requires new flooring, paint, and furniture. We are presently

soliciting for these items; then we will be working on the actual remodel of this room. ▸▸ LifeNet 4 Families provides food and services to the hungry and the homeless. Our club assists every other month serving food on Saturday morning to over 100 homeless people. We frequently collect clothing and toiletry items as they are needed. We also painted the dining area to provide a more inviting eating room.

▸▸ Toys, Treats and Towels is a non-profit that was recently started, and is being led, by a 12-year-old student of one of our Rotarians. This project helps dogs and cats in need, along with their caretakers, by donating items to local animal shelters. The items collected at our weekly meetings are toys, treats, food, towels, pet beds, and training pads. ▸▸ Habitat for Humanity builds homes for those in need. Over the summer, our club worked on a house, from the start of construction to the landscaping to the family moving in. This is a great hands-on activity for the club and this year we are looking to help in the construction of two brand new homes in the south Florida community. ▸▸ HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday) Outreach is an area nonprofit that offers emergency food and services, elderly support, and enrichment programs for children of low-income families. Rotary volunteers work with the children, work with the elderly, and help with the food pantry.

From its inception, the Rotary Club of Weston has been committed to participating in activities and raising funds for community and international projects.
