“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”
“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties.
Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

■ FEATURE STORY Fox Vein & Laser Experts
Varicose Veins & Beyond!
After completing her Medical Residency and Vascular Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, she joined the teaching faculty at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Fox is a Diplomate of the American College of Phlebology and a Fellow of the Society of Vascular Medicine. She has been featured as a vein expert on multiple news programs in both America and Latin America and has written numerous articles and lectured extensively on varicose veins. She has successfully taught physi cians and medical personnel to treat venous disease for over a decade at her vein treatment facility. She is fluent in Spanish and English.
Fox Vein & Laser Experts specialize in diagnosing and treating venous disease, including varicose veins, leg pain and swelling, ulcer care, venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and blood clotting disorders. We offer the newest and best minimally invasive vein procedures: Endovenous laser ablation, ClariVein®, Ambulatory phlebectomies, ultrasound-guided, foam and traditional sclerotherapy.
DR. SUSAN FOX DABVLM, DO, RPVI, FSVM Dr. Susan Fox is an expert in vein and vascular diagnosis and treatment. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Vascular Medicine, and Phlebology (the treatment of veins). She was one of the first physicians in the United States to be Board Certified in the treatment of veins. She is also a Registered Physician Vascular Interpreter (RPVI) and is certified to read vascular ultrasound studies.
V aricose veins are not just a cosmetic problem. They can make your legs ache, burn, throb, itch, and cramp. Untreated varicose veins tend to get worse over time. They can cause leg swelling, phlebitis (vein inflammation), thrombosis (blood clots in the vein), and skin ulcers.

Varithena® is ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins. It uses foam sclerotherapy and is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy isn’t painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no downtime, usually minimal to no pain, and only needs to stay active and wear a compression hose afterward.
Endovenous Laser Ablation is one of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a 98–100 percent success rate. It involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein; there are no incisions and thus leaves no scars. Tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. The insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. These procedures take less than a 30-minutes with little to no downtime afterward.

Spider Veins Removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. There are a couple of treatment options. We can use sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein with a tiny needle. The vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut, closing the vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. There is also a cutaneous laser option if you prefer. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or tiny red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh. It uses energy microbursts to close tiny veins without any downtime or scarring. This procedure often seals the small veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with excellent results.
VARITHENA®
AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY
Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins. It is often an in-office procedure that requires a local anesthetic. The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any significant scarring. Most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.

T he Attorneys at Andrea L. Jakob, PA have been helping clients and their families prepare for the future for over thirty years. Her firm, Andrea L. Jakob, P.A , (referred to as Jakob Legal) specializes in Estate Planning, Wills and Trusts, Probate, Elder Law, and Asset Protection services. The Andrea L. Jakob, P.A. Legal team helps people in Broward County protect their hard-earned life savings and resources. They work with their clients to protect and transfer assets to loved ones and to protect and support children. We sat down with Andrea to learn more about her practice. Tell us about Jakob Legal. We believe we are not your typical Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts, Elder Law, and Probate Law firm. We provide a human touch for our Estate Planning, Elder Law, and Probate Clients. We make our clients feel at home with our “Giving hugs and holding hands” approach. Our goal is to take the fear out of the Estate Planning or Probate process. We want to hear our clients say, “that was Easy!” or “now I can sleep tonight knowing my family is protected.” Sounds great! Estate planning can be stressful for families. Why did you focus on this area of law? When my father passed away, I noticed how unprepared my mother was to deal with the loss. My promise is to help families organize and prepare for the future so their family and friends have a complete under standing of what their loved one wanted and how to go about handling the passing with the least amount of additional stress. I have dedicated my legal career to help ing people as if they were my own family. I ensure that my clients are treated with the respect, professionalism, and empathy that every person deserves. That is inspiring. What should a new client expect from Jakob Legal? We hope to go beyond the traditional law firm experience by trying to provide a “wow” experience to each client. We do not just prepare a pretty Estate Plan binder and say goodbye; we make sure our clients understand the plan they have put in place and are given all the organizational tools for a successful plan. Our clients will always meet with an attorney, usually myself for Estate Planning, or our Staff Probate Attorney, Erika, who also is Bilingual and works with clients who are more comfortable speaking Spanish. We are a close-knit team and work well together. We strive to enjoy every day with a fun-teamwork approach and atmosphere that I believe the clients can feel. What types of clients do you serve? Our clients range in age from 18 to 106! We make sure to tailor our representation to each client’s particular needs. For Estate Planning, anyone who wants to protect their family or assets is our typical client. Sounds great. How can our readers set up a consultation? They can email me directly at andrea@ jakoblegal.com , call our office or use the virtual ‘chat’ on our website. We look forward to working with you.

• South Florida is a very resilient market. Year to date, the Weston, FL real estate market has seen a great shift. Homes that were flying off the market in a matter of hours or days are now falling back into a more regular pattern. We are again experiencing price reduc tions and longer days on the market. Homes with upgrades including new roofs, recent renovations, and water or golf views are dominating the sales. Remember, just 2 years ago it typically took a house 3-6 months to sell.
36 / Our City Weston / September 2022 ■ REAL ESTATE A s of June 2022, Weston, FL is a seller's market. This means there are more people looking to buy a home than there are homes areavailable.ThemortgageratesinWeston,FLhaveincreased, yetstillquitereason able if you look at them historically. Many buyers are now finally "off the fence" and are frantically looking to find their new home in South Florida, as we still struggle with super lowTheinventory.newshift is that homes are more likely to sit on the market longer, 30-60 days, which is more indicative of a “normal” mar ket, giving an opportunity for a buyer and seller to enter into more normal negotiations. Our market in South Florida, including Weston, is extremely price sensitive. Now, more than ever, sellers need to be well-edu cated about pricing. They don't want to find themselves chasing the snowball down the hill or missing a good opportunity because they misread the market or buyer choices. Our community of Weston, and most of South Florida is quite insulated from the national statistics. Our small-town feel, safe community, proximity to cities, airports, and top-notch public and private schools, parks, and recreation make it a buyer's dream, a perfect choice to snap up real estate. The Weston, FL real estate market has the staying power, which it has proven year after year.Weston, FL is still seeing a surge from the Northeast, New York City, New Jersey, and Boston, in particular, and it’s not just snow birds. Many homeowners choose Florida as their homestead due to rising property taxes, raising the sales tax, and state income taxes occurring in their state. The benefits of federal and Florida state tax laws just for establishing their residence here in South Florida as well as warm winters and a fabulous lifestyle contributes to the attraction of Weston South Florida. While demand in the market as we moved into the 21st century was dominated by retirees, Weston and other cities in South Florida now enjoy great diversity across multiple generations. We are still experiencing a grand exodus from the Northeast, California, and now more recently Colombia with the political unrest. With the end of covid in sight, we are seeing record-breaking traveling from countries that have been nonexistent in South Florida for much of covid.

IS WESTON
• The stock market is facing an inflation test - volatile across the board, factoring in high gas prices, global chip shortages, the federal reserve raising by 75 basis points and is looking to do that again soon.
• Affordability is increasingly a challenge for buyers - This does not necessarily mean that home prices are going to fall.
• Cryptocurrency is not inflation-proof - Real Estate is still the best hedge against inflation
• Inflation - The US is still having issues with supplies for new construction, and home renovations. We are seeing signs of this softening.
• South Florida is insulated - Rental in creases, up 14% nationally and over 40% in South Florida according to the Nation al Association of Realtors
• Rising home price appreciation - It has risen rapidly in the last 2 years. Good news. Even if home prices fall, many homeowners are equity rich.
• Indices reflect how prices have reacted to the rapid increase in mortgage rates in the second quarter of 2022
• Prepare for slower home price growth - We have fewer showings, more price reductions, more stable market
Good news for buyers: they can expect less fierce competition to find a home.

The Founding President, the late Sister Trinita Flood of Barry University, invited every South Florida College and University president to join the Board of Directors. This remarkable partnership still continues today. They are currently exhibiting an intensive presentation: The Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race Exhibition explores the history of eugenics and the inhumane, criminal practices the Nazi Party utilized between 1933-1945. The Nazis, fueled by a genocidal ideology, aimed to eliminate those they deemed “life unworthy of life.” The Nazis and the medical professionals who furthered this ideology began with forced sterilizations and escalated to the “Euthanasia” Programs and Aktion T4 program, the goals of which were experimentation and massThismurder.Exhibition highlights many of these physicians, including Josef Mengele, known as the “Angel of Death,” who experimented on twins. These murderous practices left a mark on the medical field forever, including on medical ethics and social responsibility today. Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race walks us through this dark part of history and reminds us to continue the fight never to let it happen again.

Holocaust Education & Documentation Center Hosts Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race

T he Holocaust Documentation & Education Center (HDEC) was created in 1980. Its Founders, the late Arnold Picker, and Abe Halpern envisioned the HDEC as “A Living Memorial through Education” – through the collecting and archiving of Holocaust eyewitness oral history testimonies (Oral History Collection). From its inception, the mission of the HDEC was embraced in its name: to document and educate.
Juan Diego Molina, Amadeus Music School, age 14, brought the audience to its feet applauding his interpretations of Bach and Chopin. One appreciative attendee noted, “I will remember I saw him for $15 when he becomes a world-famous concert pianist.”

Jose Veliz, a former WMS scholarship recipient in 2015 who now works with Broward County creating and producing unique musical offerings, enchanted every one with an eclectic offering ranging from “Imagine” by The Beatles, “Liebestraum” by Liszt and “Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini” by Rachmaninoff. There was a creative video with each number he played that enhanced everyone’s enjoyment.
The Music Society also presented the Platinum Service Award, given for their service to our community and to music, to two very deserving recipients: Andrea Burghardt-Stienstra, joined the Weston Music Society in 2010, when she moved here from Argentina. She is the Current Vice President of Public Relations, former Secretary, Treasurer, and Co-President of the WMS. Andrea is a passionate supporter of music and has given freely of her time to bring that passion to the community. She was also the computer expert who facilitated the Zoom Board meet ings during the pandemic and now helps enable the current hybrid Board meetings. Carol Lema is the current First Vice President of the Arts Council of Greater Weston. She has resided in 5 countries on 3 continents and brought her passion for art, music, and culture to our community as the founder and continuing spark behind Weston World Fest. This event has been awarded Best Cultural Event by the readers of OUR CITY Weston 6 of the last 7 years. She attributes the success of WWF to the participation of 20 country booth coordinators who highlight the sights, histories, costumes, music, and culture of our community. Other volunteers and vendors enhanced the experience with diverse food offerings and international music presenta tions throughout the day. She also initiated the Volunteer Reception which celebrates our residents who volunteer in the non-profit organizations in our Weston community.
Gina Catone, President of the WMS, said, “This event celebrated our talented Weston residents. This was the first time where we had three Weston residents as performers, Juan Diego Molina, Samuel Palleija, and Jose Veliz. Steve Romero, a Weston resident, photographed our guests and we had Kay Kiria, a Weston artist, selling her paintings. The evening truly represented the best of Weston.”

Homework Time materials that are needed can help to make homework time go more smoothly. This also helps to avoid kids saying they need to get up multiple times to get something they need and end up disappearing. Keeping this consistent makes it easy for kids to learn the routine and maintain it. Think about the designated space for homework—distrac tions, materials, supervision. Homework can be chunked into shorter amounts of time with break opportunities. This can be a good idea for kids with a lot of homework or those that may have a hard time with focus. You can use a timer to indicate when it is time for a break and when it is time to return to homework. You can also incorporate rewards when homework is completed to increase motivation. This can be done on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis depending on what works. Try to put things in place early and be consistent. Consistency is key to learning routines and then being able to follow them more independently. Promote indepen dence as much as possible.
Getting Back Into The Swing Of Things
■ ASK THE EXPERT N ow that the school year has started, we all need to get back into the swing of things. And after the summer break, this can be hard for the entire family. There is so much that goes into planning and organizing for the school year, that it can be a little overwhelming. There are a couple things you can do to help get back into the swing of the school year: Establishing a Routine Establish a routine early on and discuss it with your kids, family, and anyone else that will be helping out. A routine helps to know what is coming and when. This can be done for daily activities, weekly, or even monthly. I like to use a monthly calendar for important family events, errands, vacations, and a daily routine chart. This is something you can make on the computer and print out or use a dry erase board. Write the routine in a way that is easy for your kids to understand. Think about making the schedule interactive, where your kids can check off when things have been completed. This can also help promote independence.

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.
Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com
Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.
Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”
Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.

FALCON COVE MIDDLE SCHOOL Reveals its New Classroom Addition
T he new Falcon Cove Middle School classroom addition is in full use for the new school year. Towards the end of last school year, an official ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the new building. The event was attended by Principal Steven Carruth, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Vickie L. Cartwright, District 6 Broward Schools Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson, and Countywide Broward Schools Board Member Donna P. Korn. The Falcon Cove community has been awaiting the completion of this new building addition since construction began in June 2019. As one of the only public middle schools in Weston, the school relied on portable classrooms for many years to accommodate its growing population. The 3-story building sits at approximately 59,000 square feet and houses 48 class rooms, administrative offices, and a chess room. Since its completion in Mach 2022, the new building addition has been in use by all three grade levels. The new classroom addition was made possible due to the SMART Program. Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson shared that "This replacement addition for the over 50 portables here, was able to come about due to the SMART Bond being passed in 2014 so I want to thank all of you for that because had you not voted for that, we would have these today." In November 2014, Broward County voters approved a bond referendum that provides critically needed funding for students and schools. Broward County Public Schools has committed to investing the funding in safety, music, art, athletics, renovations, and technology (SMART) at every school. Falcon Cove Middle School is just one of the schools to receive a new addition. Falcon Cove’s neighboring school, Cypress Bay High School also received a new building addition. Some other work underway thanks to the SMART Program, includes the renovation of 100 media centers, primary renovation improvements throughout Broward County, and much more.

The power of perseverance By Ivis Mateos
56 / Our City Weston / September 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
■ POSITIVE PARENTING E mpowerment is a word we are hearing more often and is quickly making its way into classrooms around the world. Empowerment is an essential ingredient in forming strong, confident children who are able to fully participate in the developmental process. In education, empowerment means handing over the decision-making to the child, therefore, allowing them to become in control of their own growth and learning. In my years in the classroom, I have come to understand that when working with children, social-emotional education is just as important as their cognitive development. The world we live in gains complexity every day. Teaching children how to find their voice and use their interests and aspirations for learning gives them confidence in their own abilities. When a child feels confident, they are more likely to try new things, be open and adaptable to change, and become more independent in their day-to-day life. As educators, it is our job to expose children to real-life situations. Children who encompass this awareness can gain power over their own lives. In the classroom, there are several ways we can empower children to learn by setting aside our preconceived notions about what or how the child should learn and instead understand that each child learns differently. This can be done by creating lessons that are more open-ended and asking guiding questions instead of questions which only have a “right” or “wrong” answer. We need to empower children by allowing them to fail and teaching them the meaning of resilience and the power of perseverance.
A teacher’s role in empowerment goes further than the lessons being taught. Essentially a teacher’s role is to be a facilitator throughout the learning process. Tony Wagner and Ted Dintersmith (2015) have suggested, "The pur pose of education is to engage students with their passions and growing sense of purpose, teach them critical skills needed for career and citizenship, and inspire them to do their very best to make their world better."
Giving children a voice and allowing them to find their own power of self is one of the first steps to empowering the children of today.
A critical aspect of preventing tragedies like the one at Stoneman Douglas High School is identifying threats before they do something

Students are Welcomed to School with Increased Security Measures
58 / Our City Weston / September 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
B roward County Public Schools (BCPS) welcomed students back to the classroom on Tuesday, August 16th. Students styled their favorite lunch boxes and proudly carried new binders in their backpacks as they rode on one of the county’s 1,000 school buses. The children may be less aware of a number of changes at Broward’s schools that are lessSeveralvisible.upgraded security measures have been implemented this year. These include technology upgrades and increased security personnel at each county school. Students and faculty will continue to be required to wear their student identification lanyards throughout the day. Some of the new security measures, however, won’t be quite as visible. “Many cameras throughout our schools have been upgraded. Enhancing those cameras from analog to digital and also having additional security measures as you come into the school as you’re entering the schools (were a priority),” said Jaime Alberti, BCPS’s new Chief Safety and Security Officer. “It’s not just about the technology but also about ensuring that we have the personnel that supports the schools and provides additional security at that school.”
horrible. The 2022/23 school year will be the first year the county’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Department will be active. The department will coordinate and implement the school system’s newly revised Behavioral Threat Assessment (BTA) Procedures. BTA Procedures incorporate the most updated recommendations from national leaders in threat assessment, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Secret Service, and the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). With the goal of maintaining safe and secure schools, the County’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Procedures Manual outlines and provides guidance to school and district staff on the most current threat assessment policies and procedures for Broward County Public Schools.

Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain.

■ ASK THE EXPERT 62 / Our City Weston / September 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
F oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems.
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
GROWING PAINS IN CHILDREN OR MERELY FLAT FEET?
Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot.Anexcellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated.

■ ASK THE EXPERT D o you Eyesheadaches?getthat feel tired or dry? Discomfort with your computer use? Pain in your neck and shoulders? Bouts of dizziness? Do these symptoms tend to get worse towards the end of the day? Do they tend to correspond with long periods of using a computer, tablet, smartphone or even reading? If this describes you, you definitely aren’t alone; and like many others, you’re probably wondering why. Your eyes could be the problem, and Neurolenses could be the solution. What is eye misalignment? Each eye captures a clear photo, much like a camera. Your brain then fuses these two images. This line of communication between your eyes and your brain is a constant process that happens as long as both eyes are open. Some people’s eyes are perfectly aligned, meaning the visual data from their eyes can be combined seamlessly by their brain. But many others have what’s known as eye misalignment. For the vast majority of people with eye misalignment, this misalignment is much more pronounced when focusing on an object that is in close range. As we become more reliant on our digital devices, these symptoms have become more prevalent. You may have even heard these symptoms referred to as Computer VisionSyndrome. Given the past events of 2020, remote working and learning had become a reality for many people, causing eye misalignment to be more widespread. In fact, at least two out of three people experience the symptoms of eye misalign ment. More than 55% of them experience these symptoms on a daily basis. What are Neurolenses and do they work? The lenses are inspired by a break through discovery linking optometry and neurology. Neurolenses are designed to bring the eyes back into comfortable align ment. To do this, Neurolenses incorporate a technology called “contoured prism, “ which intelligently places the correction in the lenses where it’s needed the most. These lenses can be customized for every patient, and are available in any prescrip tion. They are even a great solution for contact lens wearers or patients that don’t need a prescription at all. They are pre mium lenses that come standard in high quality materials with high quality anti-re flective treatments. Most importantly, Neurolenses lead to dramatic symptom relief for the majority of wearers. 93% of patients have experienced symptom relief from wearing Neurolenses. In fact, 81.6% of patients suffering from chronic daily headaches reported their symptoms were substantially reduced or “basically gone” after wearing Neurolenses for 90 days. In a study concerning Computer Vision Syndrome, 100% of the patients suffering of Computer Vision Syndrome had a positive response to treatment with Neurolenses. Many Neurolenses wearers have been able to greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for pain-relieving medications. How do I find out if I’m a candidate for Neurolenses?
• The staff at Weston Family Eyecare will evaluate the frequency and severity of your symptoms.

Great Putting Drills
Ladder Drill Improve your putting from long range. Give yourself the opportunity to make short putts inside five feet from the hole. Percentages that you’ll make a putt dramatically decrease the farther away you are from the hole. The ladder drill is designed to improve putting from longer distances. Place a tee in the ground in a line ten feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and 40 feet away. In this drill, you are attempting to control the distance you hit each putt. The ladder drill begins by hitting a putt to the first tee, which is ten feet away. Next, hit a 20-footer, then 30-footer followed by a 40-foot putt.
66 / Our City Weston / September 2022 / OurCityMedia.com ■ TEE TO GREEN
L ow handicap players under stand the importance of a good short game, especially on the putting green. Professional players have exceptional ball striking skills. In fact, a tour event is basically a putting contest. The best putter each week wins the tournament. With the proper techniques, everyone can develop into a solid putter. The following putting drills are designed to improve your ability to hole the ball on the green. Clock Drill Make the short putts. Nothing is more frus trating than hitting a great drive, placing the approach shot on the green and missing a twofoot par putt and walking away with bogey. Practice, practice, and practice from short ranges. The clock drill is excellent reinforcement. Begin by placing three balls in a line at three, six, and nine feet from the hole similar to the twelve, three, six and nine position on a clock. The goal is to make all twelve in a row. If you miss any putt, then go back to the beginning and start over.
The idea is to get the ball to stop as close to each tee as possible. The next step is to theoretically close the ladder. From the first tee, hit a 30-foot putt, followed by 20-foot putt followed by a ten-foot putt to the final tee. At the conclusion, you have successfully opened and closed the ladder. The drill continues by going through the same sequence from the opposite direction. If the first putts were all uphill, you are now faced with a series of difficult downhill putts. Once you can successfully navigate this drill, your feel on the greens should improve.
The following drill will help develop a consistent path. Find a flat area on the green and place two clubs on the ground wide enough to place the putter head behind the ball. Swing the putter between the two clubs and hit the ball. If the putter hits any of the clubs, you are not swinging the putter down the target line. Make sure the putter head stays low to the ground and follows through. It’s always great to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional and see what tips they have to share and teach to you as well.
Path Drill Many amateurs push or pull the putt off line. This is caused from an in-to-out or out-to-in swing path.

W hat You Need Know.to Bad breath in pets may be a sign of periodontal disease that could lead to other health problems. Periodontal disease starts when plaque (a bacterial film) coats the tooth. Plaque hardens (calcifies) into tartar, a thick yellow or brown layer on the teeth. Tartar can irritate the gums, creating an environment where bacteria thrive. As the disease progresses, the gums become tender, red, and swollen and the bacteria continue to multiply. Eventually, the inflamed gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that trap more bacteria and food particles. The gums bleed, the roots of the teeth may become exposed, teeth may become loose, and your pet may feel pain when eating. If the bacteria enter the bloodstream, they can create problems for organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. Signs of Dental Problems • Bad breath • Sensitivity around the mouth • Loss of appetite • Yellow or brown deposits on the teeth • Bleeding, inflamed, and withdrawn gums • Loose or missing teeth

• Difficulty chewing What to Do Your pet needs routine dental care from your veterinarian and you. Annual veterinary checkups are essential for helping your veterinarian monitor your pet’s dental health, but don’t wait for a checkup if you suspect a problem. After an examination, your veterinarian may recommend a dental prophylaxis (tooth cleaning) for your pet. Anesthesia and pain medication are used for dental procedures. If dental disease is severe, your veterinarian will recommend the best treatment, which may include tooth extraction.Petsare never too young to start having their teeth brushed at home; in fact, the younger they are, the better. Slowly and gently introduce your pet to toothbrushing. It should be a bonding experience that is reinforced with praise and rewards. Begin by rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums with soft gauze wrapped around your finger. Gradually switch to using a specially designed pet toothbrush or baby toothbrush with pet toothpaste (do not use toothpaste for people because it can upset your pet’s stomach). If your pet is most at ease on your lap, keep his or her toothbrush next to the chair where you sit together. Focus on your pet’s gum line, and work up to 30 seconds of brushing for each side of the mouth at least a few times a week. If your pet won’t tolerate brushing, your veterinarian can recommend plaque-preventive products for yourThere’spet. no substitute for regular brushing, but feeding dry food can help keep your pet’s teeth and gums in good condition. By State Representative Robin Bartleman A s begins, schoolI feel it’s important to discuss what’s been happening to Florida’s teachers, especially as a former special education teacher. A great public-school education and caring teachers changed the trajectory of my life, and it is my life’s mission to ensure that every child has the sameTeachersopportunity.aretrue professionals and should be valued. I know what it’s like to take money out of my pocket to buy supplies for my classroom. Almost 30 Teachers must also deal with the pressures of high-stakes testing. These tests are used to determine school grades and teacher salaries. While the Legislature passed CS/SB 1048 under the guise of elimi nating them, it doesn’t. It requires students to take three assessments throughout the year, the last will be a similar end-of-year evaluation that will be used exactly the same way. Broward students will not see a change; they already received a beginning and mid-year test. The only difference is schools will be required to use new assess ments that will be given online. This is not appropriate for primary students. We all want the best for our children and know that having highly qualified educators make a difference. We are facing a teacher shortage. The awards ceremony celebrates the best and bravest in public safety. These dedicated professionals were selected for their exemplary actions, outstanding achievements and service in safeguarding Broward County. The accolades for these individuals are well deserved, and I’ll share with you some impactful highlights.
■ ASK THE SHERIFF
HONORING THE FINEST IN PUBLIC SAFETY
By Sheriff Gregory Tony This month, we honor the more than 500 deputies, firefight ers and civilian employees, who faced significant danger, saved lives and performed exceptional acts in 2020 and 2021 during the Broward Sheriff’s Office Annual Awards Ceremony.
2020 Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year Deputy Michael Francis embodies what it means to be a trusted public servant and leader. Each day, he diligently works to improve the lives of Broward County residents. From assisting families with legal aid to helping homeless individuals obtain shelter, his efforts have tremendously benefited our community. It is an honor to recognize Deputy Francis as BSO’s 2020 Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year. 2021 Unit of the Year: Department of Preparedness and Response The BSO Aviation Unit serves as our eyes in the sky. Comprised of six pilots, six tactical flight officers (TFO), and two pilot-sergeants, this unit is called out for incidents anywhere they are needed at a moment’s notice. From finding missing or endangered children to aiding in offshore water rescues, the unit is a proven asset for all of Broward County. In 2021, the Aviation Unit flew 3,127 missions totaling 1,711 flight hours; of those missions, 1,305 were requests from outside agencies. Their efforts resulted in more than 1,000 arrests and the recovery of 241 stolen vehicles. Excellence defines this unit, and I am proud to announce them as the 2021 Unit of the Year for the Department of Preparedness and Response. 2021 Volunteer Service Award I’ve always said it takes a village to raise a child — and we take that to heart at BSO. Helping our county’s children grow into responsible, civically engaged adults is one of our passions. Last year, BSO launched our summer L.E.A.D. Camp (Learning, Educating, and Developing). The innovative eight-week leadership program helps shape the lives of Broward youth ages 10-18. The success of our inaugural camp was made possible thanks to our incredible volunteers, including many BSO employees, who dedicated their time to managing the program and serving as mentors – encouraging and enriching the lives of Broward’s youth. It is a privilege to award these employees the 2021 Volunteer Service Award. These highlights are just a few of the tremen dous accomplishments of the BSO team. In addition, we will award our most prestigious recognition, the Medal of Honor, to four courageous BSO veterans who performed extraordinary acts at significant personal risk to their lives. Additional accolades will be given to the detective of the year, firefighter of the year, communications operator of the year, civilian employees of the year, citizen of the year and units of the year, among others. I invite you to join me as we formally honor these outstanding individuals at the 2020 and 2021 Annual Award Ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on September 14 at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. I hope to see you there!

As we age, increases in fragility and decreased mobility may contribute to a higher risk associated with being involved in a crash. Older drivers can improve their safety by ensuring their vehicles are properly adjusted to fit them. A proper fit can help increase the safety of the driver, others in the car, and people sharing the roadway. CarFit is an educational program developed by AARP, AAA, and the American Occupational Therapy Association that helps older adults see how well their vehicle fits them. CarFit teaches people about essential safety adjustments that can be made to ensure they are always riding safely. To participate in an on-demand educational workshop and complete the CarFit Self-Assessment Checklist, please visit BrowardCar-Fit.org.SheriffFire Rescue in Weston prioritizes vehicle safety education for people of all ages. The public is welcome to participate in any safety education classes offered or request an appointment for help with a car seat installation. We encourage the public to do their part in practicing safe driving behaviors to help ensure the safety of all people on our roadways.

V ehicle safety is important for people of all ages. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue is committed to ensuring that the public has access to educational information, resources, and services to help keep people of all ages safe on the road ways. Child passenger safety education and assistance with car seat installations are part of an ongoing service provided to residents of Broward County. The Public Education Unit at Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue offers year-round educational programs and services for seat belt safety, distracted driving awareness, and Car Fit education and safety checks. There is a lot the public can do to help prevent crashes and ensure people of all ages are safe while traveling on the roadways. National statistics show that car crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 -13. For younger children, the risk of death may be decreased by as much as 71 percent with the proper use of a child safety seat. Parents and caregivers must ensure that the car seat they use for their child fits the child’s height and weight. Equally as important is that car seats are installed correctly in a vehicle. Follow the directions in your car seat user manual for proper installation guidelines. It is estimated that more than fifty percent of car seats are not used or installed correctly. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue offers assistance with car seat installations. You can schedule an appointment online at https://bsofirerescuepubliceducation. as.me. Older children under 13 years old who no longer require a car seat or booster seat should always ride in the back seat and wear a seat belt for every ride. Drivers must be committed to keeping every one safe by practicing safe driving behaviors. This includes distraction-free driving, obeying posted speed limits, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is important to note that drivers should never forget to look before you lock and practice LOVE which stands for Leave Our Vehicle Empty. Please ensure you never leave a child, pet, or person unable to care for themselves alone in a vehicle.
