“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”

“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties. Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

It’s Graduation Season!

H

igh schools and colleges across the area are holding graduation ceremonies this month. Young people, from every background, are celebrating these milestones and looking forward to the next phase of their lives. Graduation often marks a “watershed moment” in a person’s life. Ceremonies for graduating students date from the first universities in Europe in the twelfth century. The hood, gown, and mortarboard cap that we associate with graduation today are derived, in part, from what people wore back in those days. It’s important that we continue to recognize this step in a person’s life today. In some ways, graduating from high school is a more monumental moment in a young person’s life today than ever before. Decisions on what to do next, whether it is attending college, pursuing a trade or joining the military are often the first major decision a person makes on behalf of themselves in their lives. The world today’s graduates are entering looks little like the world graduates faced just ten years ago. Congratulations to the graduates of 2022! Good luck pursuing your dreams and ambitions. Sincerely,

Terry & Christy Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Estate Planning is a Team Sport

O

By Bruce Iden, Esquire

ften when I meet with new clients, I discover that many like to do things by themselves. By investing online at E-Trade or using Turbo Tax in lieu of a CPA for their tax returns, they believe they are saving time and not “wasting” money. Purchase insurance or an IRA without an agent? Easy to do. And through extensive marketing of sites such as Legal Zoom, you can now download a will, trust, and advance legal directives. Why hire someone when you can do it by yourself, for less? As inexpensive and efficient as these sources can be, they all lack a very important element: counseling. Estate planning and decisions regarding taxes, investments, insurance, and disability are daunting and complex. Knowing what you don’t know is critical. One way to keep you on track as your world changes is to build a “team” of professionals who can offer real financial and legal counseling. Who are the members of your team and how do you choose them? Your team members may be a CPA, financial planner, attorney, banker, stockbroker, and perhaps an insurance advisor. The first step in selecting a professional may be a recommendation by a friend, colleague or an existing member of your team. No matter who may refer you, it is important to do your own independent research. Schedule a consultation. Ask questions. Check qualifications. There is never a substitute for experience and competence, but also consider if this is someone you feel comfortable with. Your goal is a long-term relationship. When it comes to estate planning, a qualified estate planning attorney offers more than simply producing documents for your signature. Their value is in the counsel they provide. While you can save money in the short term using an online service, or even an attorney who dabbles in estate planning, your heirs may be left to clean up mistakes that may have been made. Is that a risk you are willing to take? Are there any other factors you should consider? One issue currently getting a lot of attention is the term “financial advisor,” commonly used by stockbrokers, insurance agents or someone who sells mutual funds or annuities. Actually, anyone can add that title to their name, and it does not make them an expert. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) however, is a positive indicator that you will be provided with objective financial guidance. But even those with the CFP designation may not be a good fit for you. Do your research. A basic rule of estate planning is thinking about how your loved ones will handle their financial affairs after you are gone. Consider assembling a team to provide consistent, reliable, and supportive counsel and advice to you now, and then to assist and guide your loved ones later.

Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M. in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. For more information, or to schedule a consultation with Mr. Iden, contact Iden Law Offices at 954-885-0085.

Two Cypress Bay High School Seniors Receive Service Award

F

or the last 3 years, The Arts Council of Greater Weston has offered service awards to seniors based on their service and commitment provided to the organization. They are selected for exemplary personal character, superior leadership in volunteering, and maximum volunteer hours in service to Arts Council of Greater Weston. They truly contribute to their community. Claudina Fernandez, Director of Scholarships for the Arts Council, says, “We are very pleased to award those students exemplifying these high standards.” This year recipients of the awards are Isabella Zambrano and Virginia Montero, both seniors are from Cypress Bay High School. In Isabella’s own words, “Volunteering for the ACGW was more than just collecting service hours to meet a graduation requirement - it was about the happiness and satisfaction I got from helping others put up these amazing events for the rest to enjoy. I also found an easy way to forge new relationships since I had just moved to the US and didn’t know many people.

It gave me a chance to show leadership and responsibility by teaching others how to give back to our community and bring happiness to each other in times of need. It showed me how art and culture are one of the many things that make Weston come together as one, even though we are an extremely diverse community.” Besides her invaluable help provided to the organization, Isabella is passionate about the arts and has participated in multiple student’ exhibitions in Broward County. In addition to contributing many hours to the Arts Council she also participated in school and church activities. She will attend Florida International University beginning this summer majoring in Communications and Design. On receiving the award Virginia notes, “I have volunteered with the Arts Council since my sophomore year. I have demonstrated my reliability, represented the organization, and have been fortunate to answer questions

of several parents regarding my experience and how their children can volunteer.” She has received many impressive honors and awards for her service such as the Lightning Award at Cypress Bay (awarded for students active in our community and at school). She is diligent, thoughtful, and compassionate in her volunteer service for many groups in the community including many hours for the Arts Council. She will attend Broward College and major in Communication Disorders. Laura Dobrzanski, Arts Council President, is enthusiastic about this award. “We truly value their contribution to our organization over the years and sincerely appreciate all they have done for us and the City of Weston at large. We were pleased to present their awards to them during a Weston City Commission meeting.”

WMS SPECIAL CHILDREN’S CONCERT

TURNS DANCE PARTY

W

eston Music Society Vice President of Education Christy Blackford stated, “Bringing music to young listeners is one of Weston Music Society's missions. We want to give Weston children the opportunity to see a concert and partake in the many aspects that music has to offer. Under her leadership, every year the Weston Music Society has presented one or two concerts in the elementary schools in Weston. Because of Covid protocols, that has not been possible for the last 2 years and again this year. So, instead of bringing music to the stu-

dents, the Music Society decided to bring the students to the music. They scheduled a free concert for Saturday, May 7, 1:00-3:00 pm at the Bonaventure Town Center. It was to feature Willie, a former drummer with Third World and would have involved the kids in participating in drumming and dancing. But… Due to unforeseen circumstances, Willie was unable to come. In no way were we willing to disappoint the kids. So, the Society reached out to Pure Energy Entertainment which had conducted the highly successful Dance Party in December 2021. They were available and put on a lively show. The kids released a lot of energy enjoying the music and dancing. Both these activities have a positive impact on our Covid world and the kids had a great time. President Gina Catone noted, “The Weston Music Society continues to explore new ways to engage children with music. We want to share the joy that music brings to the lives of our youth. I am grateful that Pure Energy was able to work with us and save the day for our event.’

As 2022 storm season approaches, FPL plans to upgrade the energy grid in Weston

A

s the 2022 storm season approaches Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) plans to upgrade the energy grid in Weston in 2022 to enhance day-to-day reliability for customers and improve resiliency in the face of severe weather. Strengthening power poles, maintaining trees and vegetation near power lines, installing smart grid technology, regularly inspecting equipment, and undergrounding neighborhood power lines in targeted areas have helped improve service reliability by 45% for FPL customers over the past decade. “We understand how much our customers depend on the critical service we provide. That’s why our team works tirelessly to continuously improve the energy grid across our service area – from Miami to Pensacola,” said Eric Silagy, chairman and CEO of FPL. “We know that in Florida it’s not a matter of if, but when, the next storm will impact our state. Our disciplined infrastructure and technology investments are improving day-to-day service for customers and helping us speed restoration after a storm.”

Drones and Inspecting 473 power poles in Weston robots are used to conduct regular assessments and locate potential power issues to fix many problems before they affect customers. Intelligent devices can automatically redirect power, self-heal and eliminate or minimize customers affected -- resulting in more than 10 million outages avoided over the last decade. FPL is also continuing to boost reliability by putting more power lines underground in neighborhoods that can most benefit based on analysis of past hurricane outages, vegetation-related service interruptions, and other reliability data. FPL’s Storm Secure Underground Pilot Program, launched in 2018, has completed about 600 neighborhood projects through the end of 2021, and FPL plans to bring the benefits of undergrounding to more neighborhoods across Florida in the future. “We continue to deploy innovative and industry-leading solutions that improve the grid – investments that are paying off for our customers,” said Manny Miranda, executive vice president of power delivery for FPL. “We are always looking for new ways to enhance the reliability of our service. From examining lessons learned from past storms to incorporating new advancements, we are seeing the value of our efforts every day.”

INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

Heroes Among Us:

Western High Student, Aden Perry Sacrifices Everything in Attempt to Save Stranger

W

estern High School Junior, Aden Perry went for a walk on a beautiful Tuesday evening with his mom, Sarah. The excellent student dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon and probably set out that day with little more on his mind than spending quality time with his mother. As they rounded a lake near their Sawgrass Mills neighborhood Aden and his mom saw a vehicle crash into the water. Without hesitation, Aden ran toward the accident to attempt to rescue the car’s driver, an 18-year-old student from Parkland. Tragically, as Aden dove into the lake he hit his head on an underwater rock and lost consciousness. He tragically lost his life during the rescue attempt. Aden was laid to rest on April 25, 2022. Grieving family and friends remembered him as a caring, service-oriented person with a sense of selflessness and determination to make a difference. “He was a joyful kid and impacted a lot of people,” remembered Alan Perry, Aden’s

dad, “Some of us live 100 years and will not experience what Aden experienced in those 17 years.” Condolences for the young hero have come from near and far. The Perry family released a statement in Aden's memory: “It is difficult to find words to express the deep pain and sorrow we feel after losing our son Aden Perry. However, we are absolutely touched and moved by the outpouring of love and support from family, friends and the community who have reached out to express their condolences. We are mourning the loss of our son, but we’d like to also extend our condolences to the family of the other young man who also lost his life. A tragic set of events where two young lives converged in the oddest of circumstances, leaving two families in deep pain and sorrow. However, we are grateful and so proud to know that his last selfless act will allow Aden to continue being a hero and sharing his kindness with others in need of education or help."

The Perry family has established The Aden Perry Good Samaritan and Scholarship Fund to serve as a living legacy for Aden. These funds will be used to keep his memory alive by providing educational support to students interested in medicine or science and to reward students for their outof-the-ordinary acts of kindness and service.

Voters to Decide on Broward County Schools Funding Increase in August By Our City Staff

B

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is presenting voters with a referendum that will appear on the August 23, 2022, primary election ballot. “The Secure the Next Generation” referendum would increase property owner’s contribution by 0.50 millage points from current levels. A millage rate refers to the amount of property tax paid based on the assessed value of a piece of real estate. One mill is equal to 1/1,000. For example, a 1 mill tax on a $100,000 property would yield a net tax of $100. The school district says it will use funds to recruit and retain high-quality teachers and eligible staff by increasing compensation, providing additional school resource officers and school safety staff, and, enhancing essential programs, such as mental health services. The current ½ mill assessment will expire next year if the proposal is not approved by

voters in August. “If the referendum doesn’t pass, we would have zero, which means our teachers would not receive any of the supplements that they receive now,” said Broward School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson. If the proposal passes it will generate about $177 million annually, which represents more than 5% of the district’s total annual expenditures. The majority of the funds will be used to attract and retain teachers by augmenting salaries. In addition to BCPS, Charter Schools are set to receive $45 million in funds. “The counties on both sides of us are actually recruiting some of our top talent from Broward County Public Schools,” said Superintendent Vicki Cartwright. Broward County spends about $12,000 per student per year. The county’s expenditures are slightly higher than the state of Florida overall, but lag neighboring Miami

Dade and Palm Beach Counties. According to BCPS the average Broward homeowner would see a tax increase of about $23 per month following the adoption of the proposal.

Eagle Point Elementary

I

Launches A Violin Orchestra Program

magine starting an orchestra online and amid a pandemic. That is exactly what Eagle Point Elementary did! Upon Ms. Christine de Zayas’ appointment as principal in 2011, she discovered 17 violins collecting dust in a music closet. There was no one qualified on staff to provide instruction. She made it her mission that one day, students at Eagle Point, would learn to play those violins. That day came during the 2020-2021 school year when Ms. de Zayas interviewed and hired Dr. Felix Spengler to launch their orchestra music class. Dr. Spengler learned to play the Violin and Piano as a young boy in Cuba. He has shared his gift and talent on stages across the world including Europe and New York’s Carnegie Hall. Now, students at Eagle Point are benefiting from his love and expertise of the violin and piano. Dr. Spengler’s mission is to teach all students how to read music and play an instrument. Right after Dr. Spengler was hired, the Covid pandemic hit South Florida and schools went virtual. Nonetheless, Dr. Spengler opened his violin class online. The response from students wanting to join the violin class during the pandemic was so overwhelming that the school ran out of violins. Luckily, the Florida Youth Orchestra stepped in and donated over 30 violins at the start of this school year. Also, Hollywood Park Elementary transferred many violins. Today, over 60 students participate in either the beginning or advanced violin program and many have expressed interest in joining next school year. This past December, Eagle Point

Elementary orchestra students showcased their talent for the parents and students at the school. The orchestra as also invited to perform at North Andrews Gardens Elementary on April 1st. On May 25th at 6:00 PM the Eagle Point Elementary Violin Orchestra hosted its last concert of the 2021-2022 academic year. Highlights included student solos, and one very special solo by a 6-year-old Kindergartener. Students also performed different genres including Venezuelan Joropo, Cuban Son, movie themes and more.

POSITIVE PARENTING

Teach Your Child About Emotions By Amelis Lopez

e live in a world full of stimulation; all day long we all have daily activities that keep us busy; we all want to be smart to make good decisions, we also want to have a healthy and strong body, some of us never stop studying, some of us workout, some of us have our children enrolled in extra activities, enrichment programs to have them ready to success in life, but what about feelings and emotions. Working in a preschool makes you realize how smart and advanced, intellectually talking children are nowadays, but I have also seen that most of the time they do not know how to identify what they are feeling and how to manage what they are feeling. It is normal , at any age, to cry when you feel sad, when you are frustrated, even when you are happy or just because we are overwhelmed by a strong feeling, but we, as adults, understand what or why we are feeling and in most of the

cases we know how to express or manage those feelings, but what about children? Toddlers even preschoolers and teenagers, they do not know how to communicate and when they need or want something they act out by using a temper tantrum, defiance or aggression, in these cases, we as a parents or teachers, have to teach them how to control/ express those emotions.

GREENTREE PREP CHARTER Voted Best Charter School 2022

G

reentree Prep Charter K-8 (GTP), is a SMALL but POWERFUL public charter school located on Dykes Road in SW Ranches, serving students from Weston, SW Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and Davie. GTP began operations in August 2014 and since then, has received outstanding marks in education. “The school’s commitment to excellence in academics, and our teachers’ emphasis to “Teach beyond the standards”, are our greatest assets,” says E. Gonzalez, the school’s Founder and Director of Operations.

GTP is recognized as a high-performing charter school by the state of Florida and has received honorable mention in different academic areas since 2014, ranking in the top 3 schools in Broward county for Language Arts in its first year. The school has a high percentage of High Achievers and Gifted students and works closely with all students so they can achieve more than the basic standards in academics from an early age. The student population is less than 300, allowing teachers to offer individualized attention to each student. The Director states: “We believe that every student is gifted and if given the proper tools and guidance, the student will gain confidence and set higher individual goals. All students attending GTP, will receive the benefit of learning in a gifted learning environment. Our goal is to challenge and motivate students and help them achieve their personal best.” “Parents have called GTP a’ hidden gem’ because of the strong focus on high academics, emphasis on character education, and attention given to students. We also enhanced the technological support programs by introducing many

interactive activities that provide supplemental assistance and intervention to the students in all subject areas.” added Mrs. Pou, Director of Compliance. Greentree Prep Charter K-8 is located on a five-acre campus and has a swimming pool, computer and STEM lab, and multiple outdoor play areas including basketball.

ROTARY NEWS

ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON PROVIDES $200,000

TO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

O

By Steve Goldstein, Scholarship Chair, and Deborah O’connor Richman, co-chair, Rotary Club of Weston

n Thursday, May 12th, the Rotary Club of Weston held their Annual Scholarship Awards Breakfast recognizing students graduating from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools, The Sagemont School and HANDY (Helping Abused, Neglected and Disadvantaged Youth). This is the 36th consecutive year that the club has awarded scholarships to students in the community. This year was a record one, awarding nearly 70 students with scholarships valued well in excess of $200,000, thanks to funds raised from the FHV Legal Golf

Tournament, chaired by Keith Petron, and the Drawdown Raffle, chaired by Deborah O’Connor Richman. Scholarship Chair Steve Goldstein said “we were able to provide scholarships to students in need thanks to the support of our sponsors, including Freedland Harwin Valori and Ryan, the Golf Title Sponsor for more than 10 years, and major sponsors Gillman Homes, XO, Bank On It, Acuderm, Huntington Learning Centers, Hooters, US Legal Support, and the Mohsin & Fauzia Jaffer Foundation. We couldn’t have achieved this success without the

efforts and financial support from members of our club and the hard work and dedication of the members of our scholarship committee.” The awards were twofold. There were 17 Students-of-the-Month from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools and one Student-of-theYear from the Sagemont School. They were selected by their schools, using their own criteria. Each of these scholars gave a presentation at the Rotary Club and received a certificate and a $250 scholarship. The other awardees, from Cypress Bay, Western, and HANDY, completed a detailed application that included scholastic achievement, community service hours, extra curricular activities and achievements, proof of financial need, and reference letters from teachers and administrators. More than 50 students were interviewed by 9-10 members of the Scholarship Committee, who spent 2 full days out of their busy schedules to evaluate them and make the scholarship determinations. Not only did the students need to demonstrate financial need, but also demonstrate qualities of character, reflecting Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self”. Awards ranging from $1,000 up to a full 4-year scholarship were awarded to deserving students. This year, the Rotary Club of Weston presented a record number of nine (9) Florida Prepaid Scholarships. These were issued in partnership with the Broward Education Foundation whose mission is “to energize and engage the extended community to transform the lives of Broward County Public School students through the support of quality education”. One of the students who received a full 2-year scholarship came from HANDY, an organization with whom the Rotary Club has worked with for many years. Their mission is “to achieve a positive lasting change for youth by providing life skills, education, and a supportive community”. Goldstein, who has been the chair of the club’s scholarship committee for the past 15 years said “It is so heartwarming and rewarding to give these scholarships because, without them, many of these students would not be able to go to college. This is why we work so hard to do this”.

RESTAURANT PROFILE

Zona Blu Restaurant

Fine Italian Dining in Weston

ona Blu is a taste above your traditional Italian restaurant. Thanks to Zona Blu’s success in Weston for the past seven years, it recently opened its second location in West Palm Beach. Both restaurants specialize in cuisine native to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, designated by National Geographic as one of the world’s five Blue Zones, where people often live to be more than 100 years old. That longevity is attributed to the region’s food/wine, lifestyle, family values, and social activity. At Zona Blu, diners can get a true taste of Sardinia’s cuisine and culture. The restaurant’s menu features fare native to Sardinia as well as traditional Italian dishes. Its extensive wine list includes a large selection of Sardinian wines. The Zona Blu Bar features a selection of signature cocktails, with many made with Mirto, a liqueur unique to Sardinia. Zona Blu’s menu consists of traditional Sardinian cuisine such as fregola (a pasta that resembles Israeli couscous) and gnocchetti (small, hand-rolled pasta not to be confused with gnocchi), paired with traditional Italian favorites. The specialties of the house include two distinct pasta dishes, Spaghetti alla Ruota and Spaghetti al Cartoccio. Spaghetti alla Ruota features a giant wheel of hollowed-out Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, aged 36 months and imported from Italy. The server prepares the featured pasta of the day tableside inside the cheese wheel, tossing it until the pasta is blended with the cheese. Spaghetti al Cartoccio features spaghetti mixed with seafood in a fresh tomato sauce covered with a thin layer of pizza dough and baked to perfection in Zona Blu’s wood-burning oven.

Experience “Sardinian Style” fresh seafood, handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, and daily lunch and dinner specials at one of Weston’s top-rated restaurants.

THE DONOWAY CENTER Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida. Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. CHILDREN ARE AT RISK FOR A WIDE RANGE OF

EYE AND VISION DISORDERS

E

yes mature even as a fetus develops, and the rapid changes a child goes through in the first six years of life are critical in the development of good eyesight. This same time frame represents a “vulnerability” period – one in which children are most susceptible to harmful vision changes. Children play and learn to develop skills needed for a successful life. If their eyes have problems or their vision is limited – as is the case with at least 25% of school-age children – their ability to participate in sports, learn in school, and observe the world around them may be significantly impaired and they can easily fall behind their peers. Comprehensive annual exams by an eye doctor (doctor of optometry or ophthalmologist) can diagnose and address a spectrum of conditions not captured by routine screening tools, as well as provide a baseline against which to compare future tests. Eye and vision care needs to be given the same level of importance and attention as other standard medical exams. Among the expert advice in the guideline to ensure optimal eye care for children is the recommendation that children be given comprehensive eye and vision exams at key milestones in their development. Infants should receive an in-person comprehensive eye and vision assessment between 6 and 12 months of age for the prevention and/or early diagnosis and treatment of sight-threatening eye conditions and to evaluate visual development. Preschoolers should receive at least one in-person, comprehensive eye exam between the ages of 3 and 5 to prevent or diagnose any condition that may have long-term effects. School-aged children (6 to 18 years) should receive a comprehensive in-person exam prior to entering the first grade and annually thereafter. Children may not be aware they are having vision problems. Research has shown that vision problems are associated with delayed development, poor performance in school and social settings, and low self-esteem. The bottom line: the sooner eye problems are identified and addressed, the better the outcome in childhood and beyond.

PROTECTING KIDS EYES

Eye Injuries–

Protective eyewear can effectively shield eyes and thereby preserve vision. Eye injuries to children account for approximately 70,000 emergency room visits each year, mostly

By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician

involving teens between the ages of 15 and 17 years. Most injuries occur during play, participation in sports, exposure to household chemicals, accidents with tools or desk supplies, or careless use of tobacco, fireworks, or BB or pellet guns. Most of these injuries can be prevented by protective eyewear.

Concussions–

A majority of concussions occur in the pediatric and adolescent population (ages 5 to 17 years), primarily among adolescents 11 to 17 years old. Children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of concussion, and often have longer recovery times and poorer outcomes than adults. Approximately half of all concussed children experience convergence insufficiency, a condition in which the child’s eyes do not work together when trying to focus on a nearby object. When a concussion is suspected, a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled with a doctor of optometry to confirm that visual capacity has not been affected.

Sunlight and Artificial Light–

Excessive exposure to sunlight poses a significant threat to eye health. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun (especially when reflected off snow) can cause eye damage, particularly in infants and younger children. Conditions linked to childhood UV exposure include photokeratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, retinal damage, and squamous cell carcinoma of the cornea and conjunctiva, as well as age-related conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Blue light from cellphones, TV, videogames, and computer screens may cause retinal damage and may interfere with a good night’s sleep, especially in adolescents. Children can reduce the potential for eye damage from UV radiation and blue light by not looking directly at the sun and wearing sunglasses with proper UV protection levels and/or clear prescription lenses and brimmed hats when outdoors.

Impact of Near Work and Reduced Time Outdoors–

The prevalence of childhood myopia – difficulty seeing distant objects clearly – is on the rise. The excessive amount of time children spend on “near work” such as reading and their extensive use of computers, cellphones, and

66 / Our City Weston / June 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

electronic devices that are positioned close to the face may cause this condition. At the same time, less time spent outdoors translates into less exercise for the child’s distance vision. To delay or slow the progression of myopia, parents and caregivers should plan activities that bring children outdoors, where they can exercise their long-distance vision. Research suggests that extending the amount of outdoor time may help slow the “stretching” of the eyeball (axial elongation) that is caused by near work and thereby help prevent not only severe myopia, but also such sight-threatening conditions as myopic retinopathy, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. The progression of myopia may be slowed by use of low-dose atropine drops and orthokeratology (contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the curvature of the eye). Children are at risk for a wide range of eye and vision disorders, but regular comprehensive eye examinations conducted by an eye doctor both annually and at key developmental milestones in a child’s life can improve detection, diagnosis, and early prevention or treatment of eye conditions. Failure to address significant eye and vision conditions early may have long-term consequences not only on eye health, but also on educational attainment, professional opportunities, and quality of life. A comprehensive eye exam should be an essential part of a child’s back-to-school preparation.

How To Practice Your Short Game By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

T

he short irons and wedges present the most variability and room for creativity of all the clubs in your bag. With lots of loft on these clubs, we can open or close the club face, and move ball position forward and backward to produce a wide array of shots. I encourage you to practice and to experiment with all sorts of different lies, ball positions, and situations with these clubs. Better players are extremely accurate with these clubs in terms of both direction and distance control. They can control trajectory, and have experience hitting all sorts of shots in many different situations. Standard set up with short irons is with the ball in the middle of your stance and your feet shoulder width apart. The first step is to assess your lie. If the lie is poor, in taller grass, or presenting limited access to the back of the ball, you want to choke down on the club and push the ball an inch or two back in your stance. This adjustment in your set up will promote a more descending angle of attack, more control of the club head, and a better chance for clean contact. There is plenty of loft on the club, so don’t worry about the ball getting up in the air. With a good lie, more confident players will take dead aim with short irons. Be very precise in setting your club face angle at address and ensuring that your body lines are aligned perfectly. We are not looking for power with our short irons, so swing the club with simplicity, ultimate control, and maintain perfect balance throughout your swing. There should be no over swinging with these types of shots. If you need to hit the ball further, simply choose a longer club. Turn your body away from the ball in one piece and load onto the inside of your right leg with back facing the target. Simplicity is best. Because the focus is on precision rather than power, there is no need to shift your weight radically from one side to the other. From the top, shift target-ward, approach impact from the inside, strike the ball in a slightly descending motion just prior to the swing bottoming out. We finish in good balance on our left side, with belt buckle facing the target and right heel completely off the ground. Hold your finish and observe the shot’s trajectory and shape to completion. In summary, the focus on short iron play is absolute precision – controlling not only direction but the distance of each shot. Take the same athletic posture and stance suitable for maintaining balance throughout your swing. Typically, the ball should be centered in your stance, but it is very important to assess your lie and make accommodations as necessary. Choke down and move the ball back in your stance with a poor lie. Get very precise with your set up in terms of aligning the club face and your body position. Make a controlled golf swing, striking the ball with a slight descending angle of attack, and maintaining perfect balance throughout. Practice this on the driving range and also consult your local PGA Professional to help you improve your short game as well.

ANIMAL HEALTH

Traveling With Your Dog By Miguel E. Cordova, DV

B

ring enough of your dog’s regular food and medication for the duration of the trip. If you plan to travel with your pet, let your veterinarian know ahead of time; your dog may need a health certificate, or there may be other health issues to address.

How Can I Make the Travel Experience Better for My Dog?

Our pets share so much of our lives that many of us don’t want to consider traveling without them. Whether you are flying, driving a car, or RVing, sharing a trip with a pet can add richness to the experience. Proper planning can make the travel experience better and less stressful for you and for your pet.

What Food and Medications Should I Bring When Traveling With My Dog?

There are many factors you can’t control when you are on the road, but changing your dog’s food can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other problems that can be difficult to deal with while traveling. Try to bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the duration of the trip, and try to maintain the feeding and toilet schedule your dog is used to at home. If your pet receives medication, bring enough for the trip and try to maintain your regular schedule. If you are traveling by car or RV, bringing your dog’s favorite bed, blanket, or toys can also help make the trip more relaxing and pleasant for your best friend. If you are flying, you will need an airline-approved carrier for your dog; you should also request that your dog fly in a temperature-controlled cargo area. Many people escape the snow by traveling with their pet to warmer climates. Although fleas and ticks may not be a problem during the winter where you live, your dog may be exposed to these parasites at your destination. Make sure you’re prepared by asking your veterinarian for appropriate flea and tick control products.

How Should I Plan for Travel With My Dog?

Spontaneity and family emergencies aside, most of us wouldn’t take a trip without planning some things ahead of time. The same thing applies when traveling with your dog. 70 / Our City Weston / June 2022

Where to stay: Many hotels and rental

properties allow pets. Locating proper accommodations ahead of time and being clear about fees (some places charge an extra fee for pets) can help minimize anxiety when you arrive.

Travel requirements: Most airlines require a

health certificate for pets that will be flying. The health certificate generally states that the pet is in good health and free from any infectious or contagious diseases. Don’t assume this document can be obtained from your veterinarian on the way to the airport! Your dog may need a physical examination, fecal exam, or other procedures before your veterinarian can sign a health certificate. Also, the certificate must be obtained within a certain window of time before you travel. Find out from your airline what their requirements are and plan to get the health certificate ahead of time.

Should I Sedate My Dog for Travel?

Giving a tranquilizer to a dog before traveling has pros and cons. Some would argue that if your dog is tranquilized, then he or she is not sharing the travel experience with you— so what is the point of bringing your pet along? Sedation can also have side effects, including lowering body temperature (which could be an issue if your pet is flying in the cargo area of a plane), and causing hypotension (low blood pressure). Others may argue that a little light sedation

can calm a dog that is overly stressed or excited while traveling and can therefore make the trip more pleasant for everyone involved. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Some dogs can be conditioned and trained to travel better if you have time to prepare them for a trip, so they don’t need sedation; but some dogs do very well with a light sedative. Remember that sedation does not address all travel issues; if your dog has severe motion sickness or gets extremely stressed while traveling, it may be better to arrange for a pet sitter or board him or her. Also, not every dog is a good candidate for a tranquilizer, so ask your veterinarian if sedation is a good idea for your dog. If you have never given your dog a tranquilizer before, give a test dose ahead of your trip. Pick a day when you will be home with your pet for most of the day. That way, if the medication causes excessive sedation or other negative side effects, you will be there to intervene and call your veterinarian for help. ⊲ Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On” Dr. Miguel E. Hurricane Safety

he 2022 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1st and ends November 30th. As we have seen in years past, early tropical storms are common; therefore, it is important for south Florida residents to always be prepared for a storm. The AccuWeather 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season storm prediction forecasts 16-20 named storms, 6-8 hurricanes, 3-5 major hurricanes (category 3+), and 4-6 storms having a direct impact on the United States. As we enter this season together, preparation is one of our best opportunities to ensure we have the resources we need to help keep our families safe during a storm. Preparation in advance of any storm is always a good idea. Follow some basic guidelines to ensure your disaster supply kit is fully stocked with the supplies you and your family may need. Your kit should include at least a 7 day supply of medication and medical supplies, flashlight(s) and extra batteries, a radio, cash, a first aid kit, copies of important documents, enough nonperishable food, water, and clothing per person to last seven days, and special needs items for infants, small children, the elderly, or other family members with special considerations. To help protect your home in advance of any storm, keep trees, shrubs, and bushes well-trimmed and be sure to remove debris. Clean out rain gutters, and if necessary, check hurricane shutters to ensure they are working properly or purchase plywood to cover windows and doors in advance. Be sure to gather all homeowner insurance policy documents and take photos and inventory of personal property. Be sure to designate a safe room in your home away from doors and windows and have a family evacuation plan in place. outdoor furniture should be brought indoors, tie down any remaining outdoor items that could become missiles during a storm, and be sure to have enough properly stored fuel for BBQ grills and generators. As south Florida residents, preparation in advance of any storm is our best defense to minimize stress and anxiety as a storm approaches. Ensuring we have the supplies we need for our families in advance can also minimize issues with potential supply shortages. Be sure your family has an evacuation plan in place in the event that evacuations are necessary or required. For more information about hurricane preparedness, please join us on June 2, 2022, at 6:00pm at the Weston Community Center to hear directly from the Broward County Emergency Management Department and Weston Emergency Management Officials on the most up to date hurricane preparedness information and resources. A limited number of hurricane preparedness kits will be available to all families that register. Registration is available at https:// BSOFireRescuePublicEducation.as.me/ Hurricane2022. ⊲ For more information, please contact District Chief Todd Draizin at Weston Fire Station #81 at 954-389-2015 or by email at Todd_Draizin@Sheriff.org.

FROM THE STATEHOUSE

Back in Broward & Hearing from You

S

SAWGRASS DENTAL CENTER

By Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book

ince returning from Tallahassee, it has been my priority to meet with constituents across Broward County and to hear from you. And in these conversations, I have learned that Floridians are concerned with two things- the rising cost of living and, more recently, women’s access to reproductive healthcare. I am well aware of the affordability crisis Floridians are facing. Food and gas prices continue to rise, the cost of childcare has increased by as much as 200% in parts of the state, and rent and home insurance are skyrocketing. Instead of wasting time waging culture wars and fighting partisan politics, I led my Caucus to bring real fiscal relief for Florida’s families. Improving maternal and infant health outcomes is central to my legislative agenda. In 2021, I championed legislation to extend Medicaid’s postpartum coverage from just two months to an entire year. And last month, my bill was signed into law directing Medicaid to cover donor breast milk for Florida’s smallest and most premature babies, alleviating the cost to families and hospitals. 1 in 3 families struggles to pay for diapers. I have been fighting to provide Florida families relief since my own kids were in diapers because parents should never bear a tax burden on essential items to keep their children safe and healthy. That is why I worked to include a sales tax exemption beginning July 1st, 2022 on diapers for babies so that parents can more easily afford products to keep their infants healthy and clean. This tax break also includes youth clothes and shoes for a full year. Following the Supreme Court decision leak indicating the court is poised to strike down Roe v. Wade, people across our state and country are speaking up to voice their opposition. In swift response, I stood among leaders and advocates to fight any action removing a woman’s basic human right to make personal healthcare decisions. And as the Senate Democratic Leader, I will bring this fight to Tallahassee, mobilizing lawmakers across our state to fiercely protect a woman’s right to choose.

I was proud to lead the Senate Democrats in a bipartisan call for a Special Session to address the current property insurance crisis, which needs immediate attention to protect Floridians’ property and their pocketbooks. I am pleased to report that the Governor has agreed, and we will return to Tallahassee to hopefully lower your insurance premiums. Stay tuned!
