May is ALS Awareness Month
I
n May 2011, a father of three was playing basketball with his 14-yearold son. Each time he shot, the ball uncharacteristically fell short of the basket. After just a brief time on the court, the man was much more tired than normal. The following morning he noticed he had trouble buttoning his shirt before work. Over the next month, the father of three saw other strange symptoms; he was much more tired than usual, his joints were sore, and his hand-eye coordination was
progressively getting worse. Two months after that father-son basketball game, Michael Jaillet was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He progressively lost control of his muscular system until passing away on December 14, 2014. He was 45 years old. May is ALS-Awareness month. Each year 5,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease. The horror of slowly losing control of your body as your mind stays sharp is something no one should endure. There is still no cure and few treatments. Many of us remember the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. The viral campaign raised millions of dollars to support the victims of ALS and to fund research. Unfortunately, the need for funding continues today. If you have the means, please support ALS research by donating to the ALS Foundation at ALS.org. Prep With The Best! BROWARD TUTORIAL SERVICES
As the 2021-2022 school year quickly comes to a close, we approach a time dreaded by both students and parents: College Applications! For current juniors, we hope you have achieved your ACT/SAT scores or are on your way to doing so; if you haven’t begun, it’s time to get started! For incoming juniors, it is never too early to begin. But the world of testing has changed and continues to do so every day, and we thought we’d address some specific questions you might have!
Does my child need an SAT/ACT score to apply for college? If your child is applying to any of the Florida state universities (UF, FSU, UCF, USF, etc.), a score is required for admission! The state university system shows no signs of removing the testing requirement in the near future, so it is essential for almost all students we see. In addition, test scores are still a requirement for Bright Futures scholarships.
What if my student is applying to only testoptional schools?
There is a great debate occurring right now about the role of tests and the advantage/disadvantage of applying without scores. While most schools have not published comparative acceptance rates for test/test-optional, it is clear that having a good test score is still a huge benefit in admissions for almost all schools. It may not be a requirement, but admission has only gotten MORE competitive, and many students are still submitting strong scores as evidence of their academic achievement.
Does it matter which test they take?
Both the SAT and ACT are considered equally by all schools. While the SAT has traditionally been the more popular test, do not let this influence you. Many students do better on ACT and gain acceptance to the best schools in the country with just an ACT score.
How do we know which test is better?
It really is impossible to know without trying both. BTS offers a diagnostic test comprised of half ACT/half SAT, and this is the best way to tell. Many students fear the ACT science because they are
not strong in science in school, but find that the section requires little knowledge of science material. Don’t waste time pursuing the wrong test. Take our diagnostic!
When should we begin?
We like students to begin as early as possible in this process. Whether your student is a strong or weak test-taker, starting early allows them to have a chance to take multiple tests and still finish by the end of their junior year. One of the nicest things about testing is that when you are done, you are done! A great time to start is the summer prior to junior year, before the rigors of school set in. BTS offers comprehensive summer classes from for student looking to get a jump start.
What if my child hasn’t taken algebra 2 yet?
Many high schoolers do not take algebra 2 until their junior year, and both the SAT and ACT cover concepts from this class. Even if they are just beginning algebra 2, we encourage students to start prep early.
Are the SAT/ACT essays still required?
No. Beginning in 2020, the SAT eliminated the essay portion of the test, and it no longer even offered. The ACT continues to offer the essay, but it is not a requirement at 99% of universities. If you have any concerns, please check the admissions requirements for the schools your child is thinking of applying to. The chances are you will find they are not needed.
When is the digital SAT starting?
Beginning in the spring of 2024, the SAT will start administering the SAT online for US high schoolers. This means that current Freshmen are the first group to take the test in this format, though their testing in the fall will be traditional. The test will be adaptive, meaning it will offer fewer questions, but will “adapt” and offer harder or easier questions based on the success on earlier questions. At the moment, it appears that content will remain the same, but reading passages will be shorter and have fewer questions per passage, and calculators are allowed for all math questions. The test will be administered at testing centers on test takers’ own computers or tablets and will not be available at home. Scores will be reported in days, rather than weeks. As we learn more, we will keep you posted, but, for now, your students should be preparing for a paper test!

ou may be surprised to learn that 60% of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of your property, the care and custody of your minor children, and the identification of who directs the administration of your estate is left to the default laws of intestate succession created by the State of Florida. So, in simpler terms: if you do not have a will or trust, the State will make all your decisions for you. Another surprising estate planning fact is that on average those people who do have an estate plan, revise or update their documents every 19 years. Imagine if you have done your estate plan in 2003 and never updated it. How different are your financial and personal circumstances now? Would the choices you made, the people you identified and the concerns you addressed, still be appropriate today? Probably not. Estate planning is often narrowly viewed as a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. A broader viewpoint is that estate planning is life planning, encompassing disability, retirement, and creditor protection, as well as who gets what after you are gone. If you have minor children, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse, and your children, if you become disabled. It should provide a source of funds for children’s education, daycare, and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. If you have adult children, are you confident that your heirs will not recklessly spend their inheritance? Do you have any concerns that their inheritance may be lost to creditors or in a divorce? Do you have an adult child with special needs? Finally, do you own a small business? Have you considered what might happen to your business after you are gone? Do you have a business succession plan or buy/sell agreement in place? A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should also provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees, and costs to your loved ones. If you do not have an estate plan, or if your plan requires revision, I recommend that you meet with a qualified estate planning attorney. Once you do have an estate plan, I urge you to review it every two to three years to make sure it still meets your needs.

he audience at the Weston Outdoor Pops Concert, held Saturday, April 2, was treated to a spectacular show by the South Florida Symphony Orchestra under the direction of its founder, Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso. The Outdoor Pops Concert is presented by the City of Weston in partnership with the Weston Music Society, the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the Weston Town Center. There were cheers and standing ovations from the crowd of around 500 after nearly every number. The 50-piece orchestra and three powerful vocalists – Gerardo Ortega, tenor, Catalina Cuervo, soprano, and Kyaunne Richardson, soprano - performed selections from West Side Story, Carmen, Disney’s Frozen, La Boheme, and Les Misérables. The program ended with an encore performance of the classic Italian ballad, 'O Sole Mio. The threat of rain held off for the entire concert. Five minutes after the last note was played, the heavens opened and a deluge fell on Weston Town Center. Weston Music Society Vice President of Events Diane Marett noted, “It didn’t dare rain on our Pops Parade. People were so happy to be at a musical event of this caliber. The audience ranged from toddlers to senior citizens, all of whom were enchanted throughout the program.” President Gina Catone noted, “What a great way for families to introduce their kids to what a full symphony orchestra looks and sounds like. The highlight of the evening for me was when a young boy approached Maestra Sebrina at the conclusion of the concert and she stood there talking to him. Sebrina had been on site since the afternoon when they did a rehearsal and the concert included an encore. It had been a long day and Sebrina was gracious to this young person which was very touching to witness.”

he 34th Annual Memorial Day Classic is starting its fourth decade as one of the most anticipated events in the United States! The race is officially the final race of the Southern running season and athletes from all over the state come to honor America's fallen soldiers. Why not pay tribute this Memorial Day and join thousands as they take to the streets of Weston for this special tribute and salute to our soldiers and front-line workers! Memorial Day is an important day in which we remember all those who have fallen in the line of duty protecting our freedom. This year, we are going to also remember all of those who have lost their lives to COVID-19 and at the same time, salute our frontline workers. The five-kilometer race kicks off at Weston Town Center and is known to be one of the fastest courses in the country. While many elite athletes come out to race for personal records, don’t let that keep you away. Each year, people of all ages and fitness levels participate. Grandparents are known to jog with their grandchildren.
Funds raised by the race are used to produce a full-scale production for the United States Military Command at U.S. Southern Command. About one week after the Memorial Day Classic, Soldiers celebrate the United States Army’s birthday. The race is free for all military personnel at Southern Command.

he Palace at Weston hosted a couple of rather unusual guests last month. On Friday, April 8th, “King David” and “Harvey” stopped by the senior living community to pay a special visit to 84-year-old Matteo Pecoraro, a former horse trainer and lifelong lover of horses, who resides at the Palace Weston Memory Care community. After visiting with the beautiful animals from the HorZinn Around Farm in Davie, Pecoraro was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award celebrating his years of work caring and training horses. While the residents enjoy interacting with the gentle animals, for Pecoraro, they may spark special memories. His family was in the horse business, and he dreamed of being a jockey. Though his dream wasn’t realized, it didn’t deter his passion for the animals. Instead, he followed in his brothers’ footsteps, who were trainers. When he moved to Florida in 1972, he became a restaurateur while also owning Pecoraro Racing Stables. His mornings were spent training horses
at Florida’s famed racetracks of Gulfstream, Calder, and Hialeah and then he ran the restaurant, according to his son, Anthony Pecoraro. For over 40 years dad and son were in business together, owning and training young horses to race. Matteo shared his expertise and love with his son teaching him all about the horse training business. While their horses never won any major races, they had many other accomplishments in smaller races. When Matteo retired, he turned the business over to his son, who continues today as Pecoraro Stables, Inc. in Florida, Ohio, and Delaware.

Local Dad Receives Champion for Children Award
E
very year, The Children’s Trust awards the David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award to an individual with a lifetime of notable achievement and dedication to children in South Florida. The 2022 recipient of this award truly epitomizes the spirit of this award and has spent his entire career dedicated to providing mentorship, opportunity, and guidance for children. This year’s recipient is Gale Nelson, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Miami. Gale was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and moved to Toledo, Ohio when his parents divorced at age two. He credits his mother, who raised him and his brother as a single mom, as providing him with a solid groundwork for his entire life—instilling in him family values, the importance of hard work, and a sense of belonging. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in corporate finance, his life took another significant turn, one he likes to call the “Gale Force Wind” chapter (pun intended!) In the summer of 1991, he reconnected with his father and, after Hurricane Andrew hit, moved to South Florida to try to strengthen the relationship. His father was in construction and moved from California to Florida to help rebuild after Hurricane Andrew ravaged South Miami-Dade County. Through his father, he visited a 44.85-acre campus in Cutler Ridge called ICARE, the Interfaith Coalition for the Andrew Recovery Effort. The campus was later developed into Bay Point Schools for at-risk children through the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. Gale felt a connection to helping the boys in the facility build better lives because he saw himself in them. He started at the campus in 1993 as a teacher and coach and worked his way up to Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President. The program began with 36 youth and grew to more than 200 youth and a $10 million budget under his tenure. After helping rehabilitate hundreds of youth at Baypoint, he realized that the true root of the issue was that these boys had to be arrested in order to get the structure, support, and mentoring they so desperately needed. In 2006, he joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami to try to help close the gap. Since joining BBBS 15 years ago, over 20,000 youth have been served, 95% of graduating Littles go to college, police and youth relationships have been strengthened increasing public safety, and career pathways have been created through workplace mentoring for over 15,000 students. Gale has developed multiple programs including “Bigs in Blue,” a mentorship program with police officers, and 36 / Our City Weston / May 2022
a corporate mentoring program called “School to Work” where high school-aged students meet their mentors (‘bigs”) at the corporate location. Gale resides in Miramar with his wife of nearly 27 years. He has four children—three boys and one girl ranging in age from 15-23 years old. His greatest source of pride is being able to give his children a solid family unit with an active and present father; something he did not have growing up. Gale is a true example of how providing structure, love, and guidance to children can make all the difference in the world.

he 2022 Atlantic basin hurricane season is predicted to be above normal according to researchers at Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Science. The initial release of the annual forecast was produced by Professor Michael M. Bell and Research Scientist Philip J. Klotzbach on April 7, 2022, and will be updated several times in the coming months. The pair issued a statement that read, in part, “Sea surface temperatures across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic are currently near average, while the Caribbean and subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are warmer than normal. We anticipate an above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean.”

There are a few things, however, that homeowners can do ahead of time to make that storm watch period a little bit less stressful.
1. Prune trees and clear yard debris
Hurricane-force winds can convert almost anything into a missile, capable of inflicting damage to homes, cars, and people. High winds can pick things like coconuts or dead branches and launch them at windows or people. It is a good idea to prune back dead branches and tree limbs that overhang homes. Dead and diseased plants should also be removed.

In severe weather, your roof is your first line of defense, and a roof in need of repair is exposed to heavy winds. Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church
Supports Ukrainian Cause By Terry Jaillet
T
here is a small, somewhat nondescript, church built on four acres of land on 100th Ave in Cooper City. You may have driven by and not noticed it. Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church was consecrated and opened its doors in February 1992. The church has served the small but growing South Florida Ukrainian Orthodox community since then. And, it now serves as a lifeline to Ukraine. Since the day Russian tanks began rolling across the border, the congregation at Saint Nicholas’ took action. Church members have raised funds and supplies to help Ukrainians survive the Russian attack. The most vital items have been medical supplies, food, and clothing. In addition to supplies and shelf-stable food, the church raised money to purchase a four-wheel-drive ambulance that is being used to evacuate children and injured and sick people. The incredible generosity of the community has been overwhelming.
Due to all of the support being received and the abundance of certain donations, church staff and volunteers are requesting specific items and potential help with shipping items to Europe. Some of the top items being requested are the following:

Western High School Students
FEED THE COMMUNITY By Terry Jaillet
S
tudents and faculty at Western High School in Davie have yet again come through for the community. The school hosted its annual Spring Harvest Drive to collect much-needed food for local families on April 6, 2022. While Harvest Drive takes place across Broward County, its heart is at Western High School. Student volunteers were busy collecting and sorting donations which will soon provide hundreds of families with a week’s worth of groceries and other personal hygiene items. Student volunteers were joined by faculty and staff as they sorted donated items and filled paper bags for delivery to local families. Harvest Drive was founded by Renee Herman 30 years ago and has grown into a county-wide effort. It provides necessities to thousands of Broward
County families each year. In addition to providing food for those in need, Harvest Drive also runs two boutiques. Throughout the year, volunteers have been busy collecting, sorting, sizing, and tagging donations of new and gently used clothing, shoes, toys, books, linens, household items, and much more. Recipient families work with personal shoppers to fill their bags with their most needed items. For many of these families, the toys they select will be their children’s only holiday presents. Western High School Principal Jimmy Arrojo was joined by Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Vicki Cartwright and School
Board Member Rich Levinson in recognizing the efforts of the students.

U.S. Secretary of Education Visits Weston
U
.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona visited Cypress Bay High School last month to talk about the state of education. Mr. Cardona was joined by U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, State Senator Lauren Book and Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright during the visit. Much of the visit focused on STEM-related educational programs. Cypress Bay hosts a one-of-a-kind FBI-Cyber/STEM program for its students. The program awards students interesting in pursuing cybersecurity-related careers a certificate after three completing seven courses over three years. Cordona toured the school and then met with Broward College students about the Broward UP program. The pilot initiative was funded by a $30 million grand under the Promise Neighborhoods program. Broward UP offers free educational opportunities, workforce training, and support services directly in neighborhoods throughout Broward County. Courses and workshops are tailored to quickly teach students new skills to allow them to find job opportunities. “Today I saw two great examples of what we want to see across the country, putting our students first and making sure they have opportunities, they have choices when they graduate,” commented Cardova. “But we have an opportunity across the country to reset things that didn’t work in education ... So what are we going to do? This is our moment. We have a short window to disrupt.”

Disney Sails into Port Everglades By Terry Jaillet
T
he Broward County Commission gave Disney Cruise Lines the go-ahead to set sail into Fort Lauderdale Harbor in early April. The Commission approved renovations that will turn Port Everglades’ Cruise Terminal 4 into Disney Cruise Line’s second home port. “Disney is known for its remarkable creativity worldwide. I’m sure this new terminal will reflect the magical Disney experience for travelers. We are certainly very happy and complimented that Disney Cruise Line will be sailing from our Port Everglades,” said Broward County Mayor Michael Udine. Improvements to Cruise Terminal 4 and the adjacent berth will begin once the interior and exterior designs are complete. The entire project must be completed by Fall of 2023 when Disney Cruise Line sails for the first time from Port Everglades. “Our Seaport Construction staff has been working closely with teams of Imagineers and other creative groups to brainstorm designs and ideas to maximize guest flow and efficiency. I am excited to see the final product,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Jonathan Daniels.
“We continue to make progress on our specially-designed Disney Cruise Line terminal, which will allow us to provide the outstanding experience our guests have come to expect from us, along with that special touch of Disney magic,” said Disney Cruise Line SVP and General Manager Sharon Siskie. The family-favorite cruise line is bringing its magic to Broward County’s cruise port under a 15-year partnership that includes one ship to be homeported in Port Everglades year-round beginning Fall 2023, joined by a second, seasonal ship in 2025.

his past January, I packed up my 5-yearold twins and headed to Tallahassee for the 2022 legislative session to be a voice for Broward County. For those of you I have not had the pleasure to meet, I am Lauren Book, your State Senator and the Senate’s Democratic Leader. As a working mom, fighting for Broward families is one of my top priorities. This year, I was able to pass meaningful legislation to benefit families in our local community and across the state, including two long-standing priorities I’ve held since first being elected to the Senate in 2016 while pregnant: a sales tax exemption on diapers that will save families hundreds of dollars a year, and expanding Medicaid to cover prescribed breast milk for medically at-risk babies. In addition, I passed legislation to combat digital sex crimes – making sure the law has caught up with technology, our use of cell phones, and the Internet.

Budget Victories for Weston
This year, I fought to bring home more than 24 million in taxpayers’ dollars to be reinvested back into Broward County. These funds will go towards hardening our infrastructure against storms and climate change and expanding healthcare initiatives for vulnerable populations. For the fourth year, my office secured over $5 million to maintain the security for Broward’s Jewish day schools so that students can learn in a safe environment. I also brought home $150,000 so that the South Broward Drainage District can purchase two portable pumps to drain flooded neighborhoods after a major storm event. These dollars have been included in the 2022 Florida Budget and presented to the Governor for approval. Despite legislative leadership’s continued focus on passing controversial “culture war” bills that garnered national attention this year, my focus remains squarely on addressing critical issues facing Floridians. I was proud to lead the Senate Democrats in a bipartisan call for a Special Session to address the current property insurance crisis, which needs immediate attention to protect Floridians’ property and their pocketbooks.

By Ivis Mateos e are living through a time period when viruses and germs are the new topic of interest wherever you go. For us in the preschool environment, this topic is one we deal with just about every day. One of the top concerns parents have when enrolling their children in preschool, is whether or not their children will get sick. Well, I will confirm that THEY WILL GET SICK, if they are human. Getting exposed to other young humans that have boogers, saliva, and love to eat and stick anything they can get their hands on in their mouth, is inevitable in any environment where a group of children as well as adults may gather. However, I can assure you there’s no need to panic.

First, let’s go over building a strong immune system and immunity to viruses and accepting germs are like our best friends. “Our immune system is a series of cells, tissues and organs that, throughout our lifetime, protects us from different invading pathogens and keeps us healthy and able to resist many repeated infections,” says Dr. Ashouri, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at CHOC. “When babies are infants, they get immune cells from mom through the placenta and breast milk, if they are breastfeeding. Over time, the baby’s system becomes mature and can fight off infections.” When a parent worries about their child getting “sick” I like to remind them that sick is not necessarily a bad thing, children build immunity from exposure to different environments and people, and sometimes they get fevers, develop mucus, sneezing, coughing etc. all of these things are reactions and expressions of the process the body is expressing in order to begin building a resistance to whatever is trying to invade their body, thus creating a stronger immune system for future exposures and tolerance to a cold, virus, allergy etc. As we get to know our children better & with the help of health professionals, we learn to identify a common cold vs a more serious infection and when necessary, seek professional help to aid in the healing process. However, we should learn to trust the power of our immune system and the important role germs or microbes play in our lives. A Harvard published article explains that “Diversity is the key to beneficial microbial populations. Not only does a wider array of microbes mean a greater variety of bacterial byproducts for body cells to use, it also leaves less territory for disease-causing bacteria to occupy. In essence, good health comes as the child develops immunity with time through natural environment exposure, good nutrition, a balanced emotional health and parents’ understanding of the powerful innate intelligence their children are born with. How To Practice Your Short Game By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
S
ometimes, golfers have to rely on a strong wedge play game to get out of tough obstacles or drive the ball those last few yards to the green. If you’re unsure of your chipping or pitching, or you struggle on bunker shots around the hole, the tips below can help you to improve your wedge game and ultimately reduce the number of strokes for each hole. Most golfers don’t get a lot of experience before they’re already playing their first round of golf with getting balls out of tricky bunkers and onto the green. These bunker shots require your short clubs, called wedges, to lift the ball out of the sand trap and back up onto the playing green toward the hole. Similarly, players who find themselves in the rough grass just outside the putting green might have to chip or pitch their ball over the last few yards with a wedge in order to maintain control and guide the ball closer to the hole.
Bunker Shots
When a player gets caught in a sand bunker or green side bunkers, the best option to get them closer to or in the hole is to utilize a wedge club to knock the ball firmly but gently enough to get it up and out of the pit and onto the playing field without going too far past the target. Perhaps the most important element of sharpening a player’s technique when it comes to bunker shots is to assess and understand the point of entry drill for sand shots as well as adjusting to different sand conditions. Depending on the depth of the ball in the deep rough, the thickness and wetness of the sand, and the distance to a hole, a player will have to reassess the angle of attack to the ball required to gently drive the ball out of the bunker. It’s important, too, for golfers to remember to not hit the ball too high or even too low as either will result in catastrophe — if he/she hits it too high, the ball will just drive further down into the sand trap, while if he/she hits it too low, it might “scull” it far past the intended target (the pin) or even directly up in the air.
Chipping and Pitching Over Obstacles
Sometimes it may be required that a golfer hit a lob shot, also known as a flop shot, to lob the ball over a particularly rough patch before the putting green. Many players try to imagine targets in front of them such as water or a bunker to carry the ball over and then try to identify strengths and weaknesses around the putting green in order to better and more rapidly improve their games. Shortening a player’s backswing and accelerating the club may also improve chipping as hitting the ball down will pop it up quickly before driving it directly toward the hole along the surface of the putting green. Similarly, practicing these shots can also help to improve chipping. It’s important for players to remember that a good and successful chip drill requires that players keep the club moving through impact in order to provide a full chip with the most control, and players should favor chipping over pitching when possible.

The brown dog tick is the only species that can complete its entire lifecycle on a dog and can infest homes and kennels. Tick bites can be painful and irritating, but the real concern with ticks is the number of serious diseases they can transmit, such as Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Hurricane Preparedness By Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin
T
he 2022 Atlantic hurricane season which begins on June 1st and runs through November 30th, is quickly approaching. Weather experts from AccuWeather predict that the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season will be above normal for tropical activity. This season is expected to deliver 19 named storms, seven to ten hurricanes, of which four are expected to be major hurricanes, reaching or exceeding speeds of 111+ mph. Since 2010, there have been seven Atlantic hurricane seasons with at least one storm formed before the official start of hurricane season. This highlights the importance of being prepared in advance of any storm, preferably in advance of hurricane season. Before the storm, tune in to local TV stations, radio, or other news sources for information. Have an evacuation plan in place for you and your family and be prepared to follow all local guidelines for evacuations and/or evacuation routes. Be aware that social distancing and other restrictions due to COVID-19 may impact your emergency plans (i.e. shelters). Consider any special needs you or your family have, as well as pre-registration that may be required for shelters and/or pets. Prepare emergency
kits ahead of time to avoid the potential of limited access to supplies and ensure emergency kits are easily portable should you need to evacuate. Recommended items may include: non-perishable food/ water to last at least three days, first-aid kit, prescription medication, personal hygiene and sanitation items, flashlights and extra batteries, battery operated radio, waterproof container with cash and other important documents, books, and games for recreation, baby supplies, pet supplies, etc. Before a storm approaches, protect your home by covering windows with hurricane shutters or wood if necessary. Ensure trees and shrubs are trimmed and clear away any debris from landscaping, rain gutters, etc. Reinforce garage doors and use sandbags to help protect against flooding, bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans, etc., unplug electrical equipment that is not in use, check generators for maintenance and be sure you have enough fuel, and check home fire extinguishers and first aid supplies. During a storm, always consider the safety of yourself and your family first. Stay away from windows and doors, identify a “safe room” in your home that does not have doors or windows and be sure flashlights are within reach of your safe room. Never

venture outside during the storm as flying debris may cause serious injury or death. Stay away from rising water and downed power lines. Do not call 911 unless it is an emergency and be aware that emergency responders may not be able to respond during the storm. After the storm beware of fallen power lines. If power is out, use flashlights or other battery-powered light sources for illumination to avoid potential risks of fire from any lit flames. Avoid driving if possible, as there may be debris or other hazardous road conditions. If traffic signals are inoperative, treat all intersections as though they are a 4-way stop. Remove any shutters from doors/ windows and make sure not to operate any generators inside the home. While the threat of hurricanes may be stressful to many, storm preparations don’t have to be.
