Brigitte Had Behavioral Challenges That Needed To Be Addressed... THERAPIES 4 KIDS WAS THERE TO IMPROVE THEM ALL.

W

hen Brigitte’s family relocated to South Florida, she was having difficulties in school. She was unable to provide eye contact, lacked verbal expression and was unable to tolerate others in her space. That’s when her parents reached out to Therapies 4 Kids. “In just eight months, the changes in Brigitte were amazing. Her separation anxiety has improved, she was able to work for longer periods of time independently and the group sessions at T4K took Brigitte to a whole new level where she was able to overcome social obstacles,” says Brigitte’s mom, Stephanie. “Therapies 4 Kids ABA and Speech therapists worked to design a program to tailor Brigitte’s needs. The staff provided a nurturing, non-judgmental environment where children are treated with dignity and respect. They engaged Brigitte in learning activities that held her attention. Above all, they didn’t give up on her and took the time to build a meaningful relationship with her.”

I

n South Florida, there are countless clinics where family members and caregivers can take their loved ones to receive therapeutic services hoping it will improve their quality of life. It’s likely they will see improvement but very unlikely that all the services they need will be offered,

under one roof. For over 14 years, Therapies 4 Kids has provided a spectrum of services in five South Florida locations. CALL NOW FOR A FREE CONSULTATION

Community Unites at Weston World Fest BY STACEY BOMSER

M Photos courtesy Arts Council of Greater Weston

ore than 2,500 people gathered at Weston Regional Park to celebrate our community’s cultural diversity. Weston World Fest featured 20 country booths, authentic food and onstage performances as well as a few special surprises. “In just four short years, the Weston World Fest has become a signature event for our City, thanks to the hard work of the Arts Council of Greater Weston and its volunteers who bring it all together,” states Mayor Daniel Stermer. “It’s amazing to see everyone come together to celebrate our diversity through the cultural arts, food and face-to-face interactions. What an awesome way to celebrate our community. Our world truly is here in Weston.” Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn says she is impressed with how the event has evolved and expanded over the years. “It’s hard to believe that it can get any better but year after year it does! Thanks to a grant from the Broward County Cultural Division and support from our sponsors, we have been able

to secure top entertainment representing countries from around the world.” Brazilian Voices, the Gold Coast Jazz Society, the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami, Drake Irish Dance, and Venezuela Danza y Tambor were among this year’s selection of professional and semi-professional performances. Of course, the main attraction was the country booths, with guests being able to “travel the world” without leaving Weston. This year’s Weston World Fest featured a booth competition with France and Austria tying for Best Booth Activity. France featured a mime interacting with the crowd as well as a blindfold game for young visitors, while Austria offered a life-size cinematic Rubik’s cube. Costa Rica’s “Pure Vida” photo booth earned it Best Interpretation of the Theme. Peru took home Best Booth Decoration/Costumes as well as Best Overall Country Booth. “I was delighted with the effort put together by so many of our volunteers to create a world within each country booth,” noted Weston World Fest Founder and Director Carol Lema. “Visitors could pose in front of Manchu Picchu with a full cadre of Peruvians in traditional costumes, discover Kyrgyzstani performance culture including Epos Manas poetry, and try their hands at Malaysian batik.” All that “travel” can work up an appetite. Weston World Fest guests were able to purchase samples of authentic cuisine and beverages from Germany, Singapore, Italy, Brazil and more. n For more pictures from Weston World Fest check out our Seen on Scene page.

T

he Aerosmith tribute band, Jaded, wrapped up the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series. Fans of all ages filled the event stage area at Weston Regional Park to listen to classic tunes from the popular rock band. Concert-goers enjoyed some great rock-n-roll music, including hits like Dude Looks Like a Lady and Dream On, before the rain pulled the plug on the performance. To the tune of Walk This Way, the audience gathered their picnic baskets and lawn chairs and made their way to the parking lot. Despite the downpour, Weston’s Director of Parks and Recreation Don Decker called the evening and the entire concert series a huge success. “Getting people out in the parks and interacting is the kind of activity that turns a static city into a dynamic community. We almost certainly had people in attendance who don’t come to the parks for sports or fitness but visited particularly for one of these concerts.” Denise Barrett-Miller, Director of Communications, agrees, noting that although only

in its third year, the WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series has made a positive impact on our community. “Each concert was well attended and always by a mix of ages and families, which is what this concert series is all about – having a safe venue to meet up with friends and family to enjoy a night out.” Jaded was the final performance in the three-concert series, which began in December with Turnstiles – The Ultimate Tribute to the Music of Billy Joel. In February, #NoFilter took the stage. The house band for the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team played chart-topping hits from today along with classics from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Plans are already in the works for next year’s WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series. While Decker is not unveiling any secrets yet, he does give a hint of what’s in store. “We may take a radical trip back to the 80’s, embrace some old Florida Southern Rock and even bring a touch of Latin influence to next year’s lineup.” All WestonNights concerts take place at the event stage in Weston Regional Park. Concertgoers are

Protect Our Waterways – Pick Up After Your Pet BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he City of Weston is asking dog owners to do their part to protect our waterways. Dog waste is toxic and can contaminate our water system with dangerous levels of bacteria. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to pick up after your pooch – it’s the law! Broward County has discovered that 40% of dog owners do not pick up after that pets. Not only is that gross, it’s dangerous. Dog waste is full of bacteria, viruses and parasites that can be passed along to people. One of the most dangerous components is fecal coliform bacteria, which can cause intestinal illness and serious kidney disorders in humans.

1100 Skylark Drive | Weston

Studies have found that one gram of dog waste contains more than 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. Most waterbodies in Broward County are contaminated with fecal coliform, but how does it get there? The answer is simple – pet excrement. When pet owners do not pick up after their dogs, it leaves a toxic mess that runs directly into the stormwater canals throughout Weston and that leads to the Everglades and the ocean. Even though the contaminants are entering the water supply, rest assured that the water we are drinking here in Weston is perfectly safe. Weston’s water is supplied by the City of Sunrise Utilities Department. It owns and maintains the water treatment plants and routinely monitors for contaminants ensuring our drinking water meets all federal and state drinking water standards. For those who think dog waste is a natural fertilizer, think again. The Environmental Protection Agency has labeled dog waste as a non-point source pollutant. That’s the same category as herbicides and insecticides, oil, grease and toxic chemicals. Dog waste can actually cause burns or unsightly discoloration in your lawn. Allowing your dog (or cat) to defecate on someone else’s property, the sidewalk, or the swale or

street right-of-way serving to convey storm water to a canal, lake, or other receiving water, is a violation of Section 4-8 of the Broward County Code of Ordinances punishable with a civil penalty. So be sure to always bag your dog’s waste and dispose of it in the trash. This is also a good time to remind pet owners that dogs must be kept on a leash. Section 4-3 of the Broward County Code of Ordinances states that dogs at large (loose) are prohibited.

BSO Shred-A-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet Planned

N

ow that you’ve completed your spring cleaning, you might be wondering what to do with the stuff that should not be thrown away for safety reasons. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is hosting a Shred-A-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet event on May 18th at the Weston Police Services Building. It’s an opportunity for residents to safely dispose of documents with sensitive and private information, as well as unused or unwanted medication. BSO’s Shred-A-Thon helps reduce incidents of identity theft by shredding sensitive documents. Weston residents can safely destroy personal documents, check stubs, credit card offers, receipts and any other material that might contain personal data. During last October’s Shred-A-Thon in Weston, 21,460 pounds of personal paperwork were securely shredded. Set up like a drive-thru, BSO officers will unload boxes from residents’ cars. There is no charge for the service, but there is a five box maximum per car. Boxes can be no larger than 15 inches long, 12 inches wide, and ten inches high. Operation Medicine Cabinet allows residents to dispose of unused, unwanted or expired medications, both prescription and over the counter.

BY STACEY BOMSER

All medications will be accepted, except needles or sharps. Come early and receive a $5 gift card, while supplies last. BSO encourages residents to take advantage of Operation Medicine Cabinet rather than throwing out or flushing medications. Improper disposal of medication is bad for the environment and can lead to an increase in prescription drug abuse and theft. Programs such as Operation Medicine Cabinet, with its no questions

asked policy, are proving successful in keeping prescription drugs off the streets. At last year’s event in Weston, 296.6 pounds of uncontrolled medications and 11.6 pounds of controlled medications were disposed of safely. Last October’s BSO Shred-A-Thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet drew 386 vehicles and officials are hoping for a greater turn-out this month. The program will take place on Saturday, May 18th from 10am to 1pm in the parking lot of the Weston Police Services Center at 17300 Royal Palm Boulevard. For more information call the Broward Sheriff’s Office at 954-831-8902 or visit www.sheriff.org.

Technology and Finance are Focus of Final Weston University Lesson BY STACEY BOMSER

T

ech talk and budget battles were some of the topics discussed during the final session of the Weston University program. The seven-month course concluded with a class on government budgeting and finance, as well as technology services. The day began with a lesson on fiscal responsibility. Weston Budget Director Bryan Cahen spoke to the students about how the City’s budget

process works, explaining how the budget is managed and approved by the City Commission each year, with input from residents. Martha Perez-Garviso then talked about her department’s role in City procurements. Assistant City Manager/Chief Financial Officer Darrel Thomas also addressed the students, explaining how he is responsible for supervising the areas of Finance and Cash Management, Risk Management and Technology Services. Mr. Thomas was followed by Director of Technology Services Ryan

Fernandes, who shared how his department provides efficient, effective, stable and secure technology services to support the City’s operations and continuous improvement. To reinforce what they had learned, the students played City trivia games with the Communication staff before taking a lunch break to enjoy a Mexican buffet. After lunch, the students selected their roles for the City Commission Simulation. It is the culminating activity for the Weston University program. Each student was assigned a role to play in a mock City Commission meeting. Some students will portray City Officials and Administrators, while others will play the parts of the Police and Fire Chief. The Communications Department provided a comprehensive review of the simulation agenda, taking students through each agenda item and explaining their roles. During the mock City Commission meeting, students will debate and vote on real items brought before the Commission during prior years.

The final Weston University program day also included plenty of bonding time. The students played frisbee, posed for selfies and applied City of Weston temporary tattoos. Weston University is a one-of-a-kind program providing a unique civic education to local high school students. Applications for the Weston U Class of 2020 will be available at the start of the school year. n To learn more about the Weston University program visit www.westonfl.org/government/ city-commission/civic-education/weston-university.

Avoid Costly Automotive Repairs BY REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD STARK he summer season is upon us and it is usually a busy travel season. It’s a great time to take a road trip. With more automobiles being used for vacation needs, some cars will need a basic tune-up service or possibly more extensive repairs. When repairs or service are required, it’s important for consumers to have a certain level of confidence that the work will be done correctly at a reasonable price. Be a smart, educated consumer. Start shopping for a repair shop before repairs are actually needed. Consumers will be more likely to make a better decision if it is not rushed or in a panicked situation. When a business is selected, make sure it honors the vehicle’s warranty, if applicable. It is always a good idea to ask friends for recommendations. Research whether the repair shop is registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and if any complaints have been filed against the business. This can be done by using the “Business/Complaint Lookup” at 800helpfla.com. If there are complaints on file find out how they were resolved. The State of Florida has taken steps to ensure that the consumer is protected with the registration of each business. The State also assumes the role of mediator when issues arise. Check the repair invoice carefully. Make sure the invoice includes the date, odometer reading, description of work performed, labor, parts (new, used, rebuilt, etc.), warranty (if applicable) and the registration number of the business (located on the certificate issued by FDACS) identifying the shop. If the service was not performed as expected give the business a chance to resolve the problem. Discuss the problem with the service manager or owner of the company. Reputable shops value customer feedback and will make a sincere effort to keep your business. A reasonable amount of time should be given to the repair shop to resolve this matter. As a consumer, if the repair work will cost more than $100, the repair shop MUST give you the option of: ▸▸ Requesting a written estimate; ▸▸ Being notified by the shop if the repair exceeds an amount you specify; or ▸▸ Not requiring a written estimate at all. You must sign and date one of the above options. Motor vehicle repair shops cannot force you to waive your right to receive an estimate. When a written estimate is requested you must be given a copy. The repair shop must get your approval before exceeding the repair cost by more than $10 to 10 percent, whichever is greater, but not to exceed $50. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services regulates motor vehicle repair facilities in Florida. For more information, contact the help line at 1-800-435-7352.

ntimacy wellness is a key ingredient of human health and happiness that is fundamental for healthy relationships and family stability. However, we are very fortunate to live in an era with numerous effective and proven options to solve these debilitating intimacy problems affecting millions of people. According to the medical literature, since 1999 the number of US women experiencing orgasm during intercourse declined from 56% to 46% and currently, 150 million men suffer from problems related ED (erectile disfunction). If not addressed, these problems can contribute to states of anxiety, depression, lack of self-esteem as well as self-confidence, which in themselves often perpetuate the disorder affecting the family unit.

Cleveland Clinic Florida Researchers Discover Breakthrough in Gallbladder Removal Surgery BY STACEY BOMSER

G

allbladder removal surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed in the United States. In fact, more than 750,000 cholecystectomies are performed each year. A new technique for gallbladder removal surgery discovered by researchers at Weston-based Cleveland Clinic Florida is reducing complication rates and improving patient safety. Raul Rosenthal, M.D., Chairman of the Department of General Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, led the study. By using a novel intraoperative imaging technique called near-infrared fluorescent cholangiography (NIFC), doctors are able to dramatically reduce the risk of complications associated with gallbladder removal. “I am confident that this intraoperative imaging modality will change how cholecystectomies are being performed in the United States and around the world for years to come, making surgery safer for patients,” states Dr. Rosenthal. The gallbladder is a small digestive organ that stores bile produced in the liver before it is released into the small intestine to help digest fat. As obesity rates continue to climb in this country, the number of gallbladder surgeries are expected to increase because obesity affects the functionality of the gallbladder and increases the probability of developing

gallbladder disease. Most gallbladder surgeries today are performed laparoscopically, through a tiny incision in the abdomen. While this method decreases morbidity, reduces pain, and shortens hospital stays when compared to open surgery, laparoscopic surgery does have challenges. The inability to directly feel the small structures connecting the gallbladder to other organs can hinder the surgeon’s ability to clearly differentiate between important anatomical structures.

ROYSTONEA

Lawn Care

According to Dr. Rosenthal, one of the most feared complications when performing laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery is nicking the bile duct and the vessels leading to it. Just millimeters wide, these structures are especially difficult to see laparoscopically due to the lost tactile perception. A major bile duct injury can be life-threatening and could decrease a patient’s quality of life and increase the cost of care. Dr. Rosenthal and his fellow researchers discovered that surgeons could better see the anatomical structures when using near-infrared fluorescent cholangiography (NIFC). It enhances visibility by injecting an illuminating dye with infrared light as it passes through the gallbladder and surrounding vessels. Not only does NIFC provide better visualization, which leads to better surgical outcomes, it is less expense, faster, incisionless and requires no radiation exposure. Their clinical trial compared NIFC to standard white light imaging. The findings, which demonstrated NIFC to be superior, were published in the Annals of Surgery, the world’s most highly referenced surgery journal, and presented at the 6th International Conference on Fluorescent Guided Imaging Surgery hosted by the Cleveland Clinic Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute.

eputy Kari Pallotto, BSO Crime Prevention Practitioner for the City of Weston, has been recognized for her work promoting peace and nonviolence. She was one of eleven women recognized by the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women during National Women’s History Month. Deputy Pallotto and the other honorees were featured in an exhibit in the lobby of the Broward County Governmental Center. It was all part of this year’s national observance, “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence,” which recognized the desire of all women to end discrimination and injustice based on gender. Former Weston City Commissioner Toby Feuer, who serves on the Commission on the Status of Women, was instrumental in helping choose the eleven extraordinary women whose achievements have inspired other women to step-up and work toward a world of peace and harmony. That is something Deputy Pallotto does every day

as she serves the City of Weston. Her letter of recommendation explained how she has taken on duties and tasks that are above and beyond the normal requirements for her position. “During a normal day Kari is responsible for coordinating with over 100 different individual communities and the residents of these communities to keep them safe. Kari provides security surveys which are available to homeowners and business owners in the City of Weston to help ensure neighborhoods are safe. Kari attends career days at the City’s eleven public schools and five private schools. She teaches them about antidrug, internet safety, self-defense and gun safety. During the summer Kari hosts a Summer Academy for students to explore a law enforcement career and to teach the students to go out into the community and show others how to be safe,” stated the letter. It went on to explain the work Deputy Pallotto does to promote safety within Weston neighborhoods. “Kari has set up 23 different community watch groups to meet the needs of the community.

Deputy Pallotto Recognized as Champion of Peace and Nonviolence

All of these meetings Kari is speaking about how to keep yourself, vehicle and residence safe and free of crime.” Deputy Pallotto says she was honored to be included among Broward County’s Champions of Peace and Nonviolence. “I feel it is important that we get recognized to show we are powerful strong women.” She demonstrates that every day in everything she does. Congratulations to Weston’s own Deputy Kari Pallotto.

Storm Preparation: Plan Ahead to Keep Your Family and Home Safe BY DISTRICT CHIEF TODD DRAIZIN ith the start of hurricane season on June 1st rapidly approaching, now is the time to plan and prepare. The Weston District of the Broward Sheriff’s Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services would like to share the following safety tips: ▸▸ Inventory, videotape, or photograph all of your home’s contents and items of value. Call your insurance company to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or replace your home, car, and boat. Standard homeowners insurance does not include flood insurance, decide what best fits your needs. Keep these records in a secure, waterproof place. ▸▸ Don’t Wait. Avoid the last-minute rush to the stores that won’t have what you need or want. Plan ahead and determine your family’s food, water and medical needs for a three to five-day period. Assemble your hurricane kit according to those needs and store it safely inside your home. A basic list can be found at https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit. Remember the first 72 hours you may be on your own. ▸▸ Secure your home now. Ensure that it is in good repair and up to hurricane code. Obtain any needed plywood or panels to board up the windows or doors and make any cuts or adjustments now. Don’t wait until a warning is issued. For steps on how-to secure your home, visit http://www.flash.org/protect.php. ▸▸ Discuss and plan with your family where you will go, if an evacuation is necessary or you decide not to stay in your home. Be sure to consider any family members with special needs and the care of pets. ▸▸ Inform family and friends of your plan and establish an out-of-area contact who can relay family members’ locations and information, should you become separated. ▸▸ Make sure children know the emergency plans and family contact information. Know the Difference between Warning and Watch A hurricane watch is issued when hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are possible within the next 36 to 48 hours. ▸▸ Restock your emergency preparedness kit. Include enough food and water for at least three days, medications, a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies. ▸▸ Plan how to communicate with family members if you lose power, i.e. cell phone, text or app. ▸▸ Keep your car in good working condition and keep the gas tank full; stock your vehicle with emergency supplies and a change of clothes. A hurricane warning is issued when hurricane conditions are expected within the next 24 to 36 hours. ▸▸ Bring loose, lightweight objects inside that could become projectiles in high winds (e.g., patio furniture, garbage cans.) DO NOT STORE GASOLINE OR PROPANE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE OR GARAGE. ▸▸ Close your storm shutters. Storm shutters and impact glass offer the best protection, but a second option is 5/8” exterior grade or marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. ▸▸ Keep your cell phone charged so you will have a full battery in case you lose power. ▸▸ Turn your refrigerator or freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary. If you lose power, food will last longer. Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator to be able to check the food temperature when the power is restored.

Pediatric Dentistry of Weston Helps Children Achieve Healthy and Beautiful Smiles

BY DEBBY TEICH

We treat each child as if they were our own. Our staff has many years of experience working with children and adolescents. We build lasting and trusting relationships with our patients and their families.

P

ediatric Dentistry of Weston offers comprehensive dental care for children, from infants to teens, and helps them develop beautiful, healthy smiles. Dr. Samira Alempour and her experienced staff work together to provide state-of-the-art treatment in a safe, fun, and kid-friendly environment. They understand that visiting the dentist can be difficult for children and make every effort to make them feel at ease. They encourage patients with positive reinforcement, praise, and prizes to help them maintain a positive outlook on oral health for the rest of their lives. Pediatric Dentistry of Weston is located at 2863 Executive Park Dr., Suite 101, in Weston. Dr. Samira Alempour answered some commonly asked questions about her practice.

Dentistry, and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Visits are complimentary for children under the age of two.

What is your (Dr. Samira Alempour) background? I moved to South Florida when I was 13 years old and have lived here ever since. I speak English, Spanish, and Farsi. I am a published author and a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. I obtained my Dental Degree from Nova Southeastern University, where I continued on and earned my Degree in Pediatric Dentistry (specializing in the oral healthcare of infants, children, teens, and patients with special needs). I currently live in Weston with my husband, Robert; 6-year-old son, Riad; 4-year-old daughter, Ayla; and one-month-old daughter, Nina.

What is new in pediatric dentistry? We are always looking for ways to improve our services by using the latest technology. Our office is proud to offer Silver Diamine Flouride – a topical medicament used to treat and prevent cavities without having to anesthetize or cut into the tooth. It is a conservative approach used in the treatment of cavities. Silver Diamine Flouride (SDF) has been used in many countries, such as Brazil, Japan, Germany and Austrailia, for many decades with great success. It works great for very young children, because it can be painted on in one to two minutes and the child is ensured a fast, easy and effective visit.

Why is it important to bring children for early dental visits? Early dental visits create the concept of a dental home, where young patients can learn to trust their pediatric dentist and staff. This helps to create familiar and comfortable dental visits. Also, early visits help detect cavities when they are small and more manageable and therefore much easier to treat. Another great benefit of early dental visits

is to ensure that patients are brushing well and taking all the correct measures to prevent early childhood decay. At what age should children start brushing their teeth? The best time to start brushing is when the first primary tooth erupts to ensure good oral health for all of the years to come. We offer special infant toothbrushes with unique handles to our

patients for creating safe and healthy brushing habits from an early age.

in the child’s bite. Such habits should be discussed with your pediatric dentist.

Is thumb sucking a problem? Thumb sucking and pacifiers provide comfort and a sense of security for many babies. Both are a common way to self sooth. If thumb sucking continues beyond two to three years of age, it may cause malpositioning of the teeth and future discrepancies

At what age do most children start losing their teeth? Most children begin to lose their first tooth around the age of six, but every child is different and sometimes it is sooner or later than six years of age. The ideal age to bring a child for their first visit is after they turn one.

Manatee Bay Teacher Receives Univision Recognition BY STACEY BOMSER

C

ongratulations to Manatee Bay Elementary School first grade Spanish dual language teacher Liliana Maestrey. She is the recipient of Univision 23’s 2019 Un Maestro Especial (“A Special Teacher”) Award, which recognizes teachers who have shown exceptional leadership in their community and have made a positive impact on the lives of their students. That impact is clearly evident when you hear the praises of her students’ parents. Maria Valecillos calls Mrs. Maestrey a dedicated teacher. “The kind that teaches our children with love and passion, with the intention and purpose of making learning a true magical experience.” Magical is a sentiment shared by Victoria Diaz, who says she knew from day one that Mrs. Maestrey was a special teacher. “As we walked around the stations she had so carefully prepared for orientation, it quickly became apparent that this was no ordinary teacher – this was someone

about to change our lives. Throughout the year, Mrs. Maestrey taught us that being a teacher extended beyond the classroom, the lessons, and the homework; it was about hugging our children in their home away from home, motivating them to achieve goals they felt were beyond their reach, and in seeking out the best in everyone and then shining a light on them so bright that they became radiant. They say that ‘to teach is to touch a life forever,’ and Mrs. Maestrey has touched us all, in more

ways than we could ever repay her.” Mrs. Maestrey believes educators play an important role in the development of children – and it’s a role she takes seriously. “When you choose a path to become an educator, you are dedicating your life to helping our most precious little ones grow into responsible, competent learners. It is extremely satisfying to know that you impacted someone’s life in a positive way for the rest of their lives.” As one of the 2019 Un Maestro Especial Award winners, Univision 23

filmed a segment on Mrs. Maestrey. She was able to illustrate her unique gift by taking viewers along with her class as they traveled to the imaginary world of Snow White’s forest, where she conducted a science lesson on plants. Manatee Bay Principal Heather Hedman-Devaughn says she is continually impressed by how Mrs. Maestrey engages her young students, often dressing in costume to bring lessons to life. As an example, for a science lesson Mrs. Maestrey wore a crazy blue wig while her young students dressed in lab coats to become little scientists. “Mrs. Maestrey represents our school in the finest way,” states Principal Hedman-Devaughn. “At Manatee Bay, we truly believe in reaching and teaching the whole child. Mrs. Maestrey does that in the most creative, humble and motivating way. Her style of teaching fosters independence, collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking.”

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”

Dear Friend,

write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 5/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.

I

want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar

Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well

Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Laurie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Dual Language Students Lead the Way at Indian Trace Elementary BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or generations, parents have learned about their child’s academic progress through parent-teacher conferences. That’s now changing as students play a greater role in their education. At Indian Trace Elementary School, dual language students recently conducted Student Led Conferences. “A Student Led Conference is different than

a traditional teacher-parent conference because it puts the student in the driver’s seat and creates opportunities for reflection and engagement,” explains fourth grade teacher Frances Charron. The concept was introduced by third grade teacher Patty De Biase, who was intrigued with the concept. “Students are able to take ownership of their learning experience by showing parents portfolios of work samples both on paper and digitally using Canvas, which is our Learning Managing System,” she shares. “It is important for the student to take ownership, reflect and tell their parents their strengths and weaknesses.” To ensure the students’ selfevaluation was accurate, the dual language teachers worked with their students choosing work samples, from their binders and their computers, and offering a rubric to evaluate the work. “The students were extremely proud to show their progress in

both languages,” notes second grade teacher Uva Delgado. “As a teacher it was wonderful to see the parents and child involved in the process.” Colleague Stephanie Fernandez, a fourth-grade teacher, added, “As we watched our students explaining to their parents their accomplishments, we could see their maturity and pride in their success.” The dual language team discovered that parents in all grade levels enjoyed seeing their child’s progress through their student’s eyes. “We got so many compliments and immediate feedback that we decided we will do it again next year,” states Mrs. Charron, adding that some of the general education teachers noticed the benefits of Student Led Conferences and may consider adopting this program as well in the future.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Use in the Foot and Ankle BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

H

ealing after an injury involves a wellorchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone marrow and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopedic procedures. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. What conditions can it treat? PRP can be used to treat Arthritis (foot or ankle), Ligament Injuries (acute or chronic), Tendon Injuries (acute or chronic), Joint Pain, Chronic Inflammatory Conditions, Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis,

Chronic Nerve Irritation (Neuritis), Shin Splints and Heel Spurs. How does the PRP process work? Our doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes. What happens after that? The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray. Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP? Speak with our doctors and ask if PRP is right for you. We will perform an examination to determine if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place. What are the risks associated with this treatment? PRP uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon. n Carlo A. The school took home top awards from this past season’s competition. “VEX Robotics is the world’s largest and fasting growing robotic competition,” explains STEM Robotics teacher Paula Fijalkowski. “Each year students are given an exciting engineering challenge in the form of a game. Students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, build innovative robots and compete in different STEM challenges with other teams locally, statewide and worldwide.” Comprised of carefully selected fourth and fifth grade students, the Manatee Bay team spent countless hours, before, during and after school, preparing for the Broward County VEX Robotic Competition, where they faced 50 other teams. The Manatee Bay team took home the top three District awards.

POSITIVE PARENTING

Mindfulness BY IVIS MATEOS eaching children self-regulation is a necessary tool in our daily life and education system. Selfregulation teaches us to bring ourselves back to a normal, balanced state of mind. Studies show that through mindfulness practice we can achieve this as well as improve psychological functioning and it may ameliorate the negative effects and reduce trauma among vulnerable students, according to Dr. Erica M.S. Sibinga, an associate professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Mindfulness practice begins with the parenting adult. The parent must learn to apply mindfulness in order for their children to connect with the practice. Develop your own mindfulness recognizing what you see, feel, smell, etc. Learn to be present. When at the beach, for example, stop for a few minutes. Recognize what you feel: the wind on your skin, the sand in your toes, the smell of the sea. How does being at the beach make you feel? Why does it make you feel this way?

This exercise can be done anywhere at any time, thus helping you be present, recognizing and being aware of your surroundings and your thoughts. This practice helps you focus more deeply and will help lead you to understanding and controlling your emotions better in a more clever and less impulsive way. Mindfulness helps children recognize their feelings and better understand them. Many times, children are exposed to stressful situations and through mindfulness practice they learn to stop, recognize and decide what they want to do with those feelings. This has proven to relieve tension, improve testing skills at school and enhance social emotional skills. One simple mindfulness practice for adults and children to start working on together is the STOP technique created by Elisha Goldstein, PhD, a clinical psychologist and the author of The Now Effect and coauthor of A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook. Goldstein suggests we create a space in the day to STOP by following these simple steps: S - Stop what you are doing. T - Take a few deep breaths. O - Observe your experience just as it is. P - Proceed with something that will support you in the moment. For more tips on mindfulness and its benefits, I invite you to visit www. mindfulkidsmiami.org, a new program being utilized successfully in the public school system available for all teachers, children and parents. n Ivis Mateos is a mother of two boys and has more than 22 years combined experience in educational consulting and management. She has been the General Manager at Tiny Planet Preschool and an Educational Consultant for Graven International Group for the past three years. For more information, please contact 954-384-4884.

Falcon Cove Named First Ever Broward County Middle School Chess Champions BY STACEY BOMSER

W

hen Falcon Cove Middle School switched to block scheduling this year, it opened up a world of opportunities. Students can now take up to four electives, compared to two on the traditional six-class schedule. Chess is one of the most popular new electives. Chess teacher Anthony Schiano says approximately 200 students took part in the inaugural program. “Since we are the first public school in the county to offer chess as an elective, I had to develop my own curriculum. Block scheduling allows us to have 86 minutes per class, so I usually have 25 minutes of lesson and study and then around one hour of play. It is important the student play a lot but also learn how to play properly.” In addition to teaching chess-playing skills, Mr. Schiano strives to create a culture of life-long chess players. “The same way Eighth grader Savio Marques was the Middle School Chess Tournament’s best overall player and only player to go undefeated.

knowing how to throw a football does not make someone a football player, knowing how to move all the pieces does not make someone a chess player.” He points out that the academic benefits of chess are only realized when the student understands how to apply tactics and strategy. “Once they learn how to play in combinations with an objective mind, then they can say they know how to play chess.” That philosophy seems to have worked. The Falcon Cove Chess Team took top honors in the first ever Broward County Schools Middle School Chess Tournament, competing against teams from 11 other schools. Mr. Schiano says he took the top four players from each of his five chess classes and ran them through an in-house tournament to create the school’s competition team. The team was comprised of nine sixth graders, one seventh grader, and two eighth graders. By selecting the best of the best, he was able to curate a winning team. Not only did Falcon Cove win first place as a team, but several players were tops in their categories. According to Mr. Schiano, “Eighth grader Savio Marques won first place as Best Overall Player of the event and was the only player to go undefeated in five rounds of play. From sixth grade, Vyom Mishra won

third overall and Sihwan Chang won fourth overall. Yashas Vijay won third place in the eighth-grade category and Ivan Mrozek won third place in the seventh-grade category.” Mr. Schiano says there were more sixth graders on the team because he wanted to develop and showcase their talent, as they will be competing for the next two years. “Falcon Cove took home all of the sixth-grade awards,” he states. “Sebastian Paniajua won first, Haden Foster second, Akshay Bekkary third, and JP Argentina won fourth in the sixth-grade category. In addition, Antonio Varejao and Yash Santwai both won three games out of five and received participation awards.”

STEM Project Has Indian Trace Third Graders Jumping for Joy BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge was especially meaningful for students in Patty De Biase’s third grade dual language class at Indian Trace Elementary School. Not only were the children raising funds to help the America Heart Association fight heart disease and stroke, but they were using homemade jump ropes to complete the challenge. As an extension of the STEM curriculum, Mrs. De Biase had students work in small groups to create a usable jump rope using only plastic grocery bags and duct tape. She says it was interesting to see how the children planned and executed their designs. “This lesson was all about collaboration,” states Mrs. De Biase. “The students were grouped randomly and provided with the supplies, but the design was totally up to them.” The students had to work together to come up with a jump rope constructed to fit the individual

members of the group depending on their height, etc. While some groups designed short jump ropes for individual jumping, others created a longer rope that allowed the team to play together, with two students turning the jump rope while the third jumped. “We did not provide any direction, the students had to use their math skills and be creative,” notes Mrs. De Biase. The children were able to put their jump ropes to the test, when they participated in the school’s American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge. That event teaches children about how their heart works and how to keep it healthy, while raising money to benefit the American Heart Association’s lifesaving research. According to PE Coach Mark Logsdon, “Heart disease is the number one cause of death and any awareness is definitely worth it. This generation is the first generation expected NOT to outlive

their parents.” Mrs. De Biase’s class raised $255 of the school’s $9,000 donation to the American Heart Association. She says she is proud of her students and their efforts, calling it a win-win for all. “The Jump Rope Engineering Challenge brought a real-world problem and connected it to our STEM and science curriculum,” she explains. “Tying it in to the fundraiser made the kids even more excited.”

Students Gain When Eagle Point Gives Back BY STACEY BOMSER

T

hrough Eagle Point Gives Back, students at Eagle Point Elementary School were able to raise almost $5500 for charity and support causes from coast to coast. The event was so successful, the week of charitable giving will now become a tradition at the school. “We have always found ways to embed community service into our curriculum,” states Principal Christy de Zayas. “A few years ago, our students completed 67 community service projects. This year we were able to support six charities, including one very special to our school family.” For Eagle Point Gives Back, students in each grade level gave suggestions on which charities/causes they would like to help support and the top two or three choices were then put to a vote at each grade level. The charity that received the most votes won. Kindergarten students supported Paws to Care by donating paper towels, blankets, laundry detergent, Lysol wipes, and gift cards to pet supply stores.

First grade raised $1,029.75 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with students donating $1 to participate in a No Uniform Day. A $1 donation to the Guide Dog Foundation allowed second graders to bring a stuffed animal to school and keep it on their desk for a day; the grade raised $500.32. Third graders collected new stuffed animals for the We Care Bears Project, which donates stuffed animals to the Pembroke Pines Fire Department to distribute to children facing emergency situations. Third graders also raised $1,113.26 for the Joey Jeffrey Cancer Fund. Fifth graders earned $2,219.05 for that organization through a car wash on campus. With a $1 donation for an in-class movie date, fourth graders raised $553.43 for Hope for Paws, a pet adoption agency in Los Angeles. Principal de Zayas says she was touched to see the outpouring of support for these special charities, especially the Joey Jeffrey Cancer Fund. “Joey was a student at Eagle Point. His mother was a second-grade teacher here. Some of the current fifth graders had her as a teacher. Joey has Stage 4 cancer and the money raised will go towards offsetting medical expenses.” By completing these community service projects, students are learning valuable lessons. “By helping others, we are teaching children to take responsibility for our world and how their contributions positively impact other people,” states Principal de Zayas. “Additionally, students are learning patience, empathy, and global perspective. This makes me excited for our future knowing that we are educating such compassionate children.”

Tequesta Trace Band Members Share Love of Music BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he benefits of music education on a student are innumerable. From helping develop language and reasoning skills and improving memory to teaching teamwork and building self-confidence, children gain numerous academic benefits by participating in a school music program. With hundreds of students getting ready to matriculate to middle school, members of the Tequesta Trace Middle School band have been reaching out to recruit fifth graders to choose band as an elective. The Tequesta Trace Symphonic and Jazz bands visited Country Isles Elementary, Eagle Point Elementary and Indian Trace Elementary schools, along with about 20 members of the Cypress Bay Sound of Thunder (high school band). During these visits, the experienced musicians introduced

the young students to the woodwind and brass instruments and gave the fifth graders a chance to play several instruments. Prior to the school visits, Tequesta Trace Band Director Heston Curry conducted a “fitting clinic” during which time he showed the older students how to properly guide the fifth graders into getting their first sound from the band instruments. To further excite the rising sixth graders about the band program at Tequesta Trace, Mr. Curry led a pep band in playing energizing tunes to welcome the fifth-graders during their class field trips to tour the middle school. During a parent orientation meeting last month, Mr. Curry shared more about the benefits of music education and the richness of the school’s band program. Tequesta Trace offers band as an elective to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Mr. Curry directs a beginning, advanced and symphonic band to accommodate students of all playing levels. Students with advanced musical experience on saxophone, trombone, trumpet, guitar, piano, and drums can audition for the jazz/rock band, Rockin’ Jazz Catz.

“We want every student in Weston to know about the fantastic musical opportunities they have when they become part of a band. The students in our area are very fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of the high quality, Superior-rated concert and jazz program at Tequesta Trace,” states Mr. Curry. “The mission of the Tequesta Trace Middle School Band is to partner with parents, students, and the school to provide an atmosphere where students can be successful in learning and performing on musical instruments, both individually and in a large ensemble. We believe music education is an integral part of a child’s overall education. It is our primary goal to foster that education and its influence on other aspects of life and create an overall positive experience.”

Beyond Biographies: Indian Trace Classes Create Living Museum BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents in Arlene Presno and Amy DuCuennois’ third grade gifted/high achiever classes at Indian Trace Elementary School have a thirst for knowledge. So, when it came time to learning about important individuals who have had a positive impact on the world, the classes created a Living Museum. After selecting a significant figure and reading a biography about that individual, the students literally brought their “characters” to life, turning the classroom into a Living Museum. “The students were able to express their individual interests when selecting which significant figure they wanted to study,” explains Mrs. Presno. The chosen individuals ranged from historical figures including George Washington, Christopher Columbus and Rosa Parks, to humanitarians and environmentalists such as Mother Teresa, Princess Diana and Dian Fossey, to entertainers and sports figures like Elvis, Jim Henson, Julia Child and Babe Ruth. “The students had to read a biography about their chosen person and use additional online resources to gather information to create a biographical scrapbook about the person’s life and accomplishments,” states Ms. DuCuennois. The scrapbook had to contain a timeline, mementos, characters and places that were

72 MAY 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

important to the individual, and additional photos with captions. For the children, the best part of the project was dressing up. The students created elaborate costumes to properly portray their chosen individual, complete with Jane Goodall holding chimpanzee stuffed animals. The Living Museum had two components, one for parents and the other for classmates. In costume, the students paraded into the cafeteria and put on a show for their families. They began by introducing their selected individual and explaining how that person contributed to society. Then, the two classes performed a variety of patriotic songs under the direction of music teacher Linda Saver. Following the performance for parents, the students returned to the classroom to present the Living Museum. Still in costume, each student made an oral presentation of their scrapbook to their classmates. Mrs. Presno says the students learned a lot from the Living Museum project. “They became an expert on their selected person and also learned about many others when listening to their classmates tell about their individual.” “The students also practiced their researching skills, exercised creativity, learned how to communicate with confidence, and got exposed to the genre of biography,” added Ms. DuCuennois.

BY HOLLY & BOB CATANIA e are just starting the home buying and selling season. It’s important to note, that when selling your home, particular attention should be made to the Buyer’s first impression. That doesn’t just mean opening the front door for them. You actually have three opportunities to make a good first impression to a potential Buyer: Online, Curb Appeal and Entry Appeal. All three are crucial, and all three are subject to their own particular errors. ▸▸ Online – since over 90% of buyers choose to view properties online before ever seeking the assistance of a Realtor®, it is extremely important to ensure that your home makes a strong visual first impression online. All too often, insufficient effort goes into ensuring that the listing photos are of high quality. Professional photography is of the utmost importance to ensure that your property makes buyers’ lists. The better you prepare your home for a photo-shoot, the better the photographs will look. If Buyers don’t like the poor quality photos, or there are not enough photos, they most likely will bypass your property. Photos that look bad don’t sell well, whereas good photos will tease the buyers and make them see the good qualities of your home. Aerial photography and 3D videos are now becoming mainstream when marketing your home. ▸▸ Curb Appeal – assuming that your property has made it onto the Buyer’s list, the next threshold is curb appeal. For minimal expense, sellers can create fresh edges where grass meets mulch. Adding color with annuals like impatiens can brighten up your landscaping. Pressure cleaning your roof and driveway, trimming the shrubbery and adding fresh mulch to the garden beds will improve your curb appeal. Does your front door need painting? Is the front door hardware pitted? If so, replace the hardware and have the front door repainted professionally. Synchronizing your front entry hardware, house numbers, the lockset, overhead light fixture and mailbox can add style and interest to the exterior of your home. ▸▸ Entry Appeal – drives the Buyer’s first impression of the interior. Make sure that the interior is free of clutter, especially personal items that may distract the Buyer from envisioning themselves in your home. Pay attention to the sense of smell. Eliminate any potential sources of mold or mildew. Focus on the kitchen and bathrooms. Eliminate as much of the small appliances on the kitchen counters as possible. Bathrooms should look like a just cleaned hotel room, new soaps, clean towels and maybe some cut flowers. All personal objects should be removed from the counters. Also, consider a home stager who can rearrange furniture and furnishings, or bring their own, to make the house look as appealing as possible. Just as important as creating a good first impression is pricing the property correctly, and that’s where the value of experienced Realtors® come in.

ATTORNEY AT LAW

ASK THE EXPERT

A Whiter, Brighter Smile BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN

A

*No Recovery, No Fee, No Costs

s I sit down to write this article, I am trying out a new tooth whitening product which we are considering for the practice. We have reviewed the research provided by the manufacturer, have listened to paid experts who lecture on its behalf and have read over the instructions provided for use. Still the last test is personal. The doctor has become the patient. There is no doubt that cosmetic dentistry has become a big part of public demand over the past decade. The surprising part is that the market has opened up to a younger population. We are asked more and more about the appropriate time to consider dental bleaching for children as well as the effectiveness of over-the counter products. Let’s first examine the downside/side effects of bleaching. The most commonly documented side effect is sensitivity. This can be from sensitivity of teeth or gum tissue, but is usually the later due to an ill fitting tray. The good news is that sensitivity goes away after the bleaching product is discontinued. The second most common side effect is leakage of the margins of a present restoration. What this means is that it may shorten the lifespan of a filling or crown. However, well prepared/fitting dental work would tend to be less affected. What then is the benefit of a professional system vs. an over-the counter system (OTC)? The main difference between the two is the concentration of the active ingredient which is carbamide peroxide in most cases. Professional systems work faster, make teeth whiter, and results tend to last longer. OTC systems are more accessible and are usually less expensive. In my opinion, the most important part of the process, no matter which system is used, is making whitening part of the dental treatment plan. For example, whitening may have no effect on specific teeth which were previously traumatized. Whitening in this situation may make the traumatized tooth/teeth more noticeable due to the increased contrast with other teeth after bleaching. Additionally, if you are planning new dental work, it may make sense to whiten the teeth before choosing a shade for your new dental restorations. The reason is that when whitening your teeth, dental restorations will not whiten with your teeth. For these reasons and many others, a discussion with your dentist may save you heartache and possibly money in the long run. Parents often point out a concern that their child’s front teeth are darker than back teeth. In children between the ages of 7 and 12 this is usually due to the contrast between baby teeth and permanent teeth. Baby teeth are typically lighter in color by multiple shades. The reason for this is differing thicknesses of the layers of the teeth which reflect light differently. Bleaching teeth at this stage is not advised because this would create a situation in which there will be more noticeable contrast each time a new tooth erupted. In fact, we recommend waiting until all baby teeth fall out before considering whitening. From the vantage point of the dental professional, we are looking for a product that whitens teeth effectively and lasts as long as possible. It should cause only minimal sensitivity (hopefully none) and have an easy delivery system. On that note, I will excuse myself to remove my trays and check out my new shade.

Everglades Elementary Second Graders Present Meaningful Musical BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he second grade production of The Share Bears has become a cherished musical tradition at Everglades Elementary School. Under the direction of Music/Drama/Performing Arts Teacher Becky Berry, the class presents this meaningful musical each spring. “The Share Bears is a dramatic musical play that is set in Honey Hollow, a friendly community where bears and bees live and work cooperatively,” explains Mrs. Berry. “It is through the kind interaction of the bears and bees that we learn important lessons about sharing and caring for others.” Those are just two of the traits second graders learned from this production. According to Mrs. Berry, participating in the performing arts is beneficial to children. “Students gain self-confidence, develop their imaginations, learn the importance of focusing on performing goals, develop empathy and compassion for others, learn to cooperate with a large cast of performers, sharpen skills to develop concentration and communication, and have enjoyable times cooperatively rehearsing together to create a memorable musical production.” In addition to teaching these important life skills, putting on the musical is an engaging means 76 MAY 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

of teaching the music curriculum to second graders. “The Share Bears provides opportunities for students to learn about rhythm, melody, form and expression through active participation in singing activities, choreographic movement opportunities, and sharpening listening skills, with the ultimate goal of performance,” explains Mrs. Berry. Students are able to develop their leadership skills by auditioning for roles such as narrators, bears or bees. The play also allows students to better express their feelings and emotions, and better understand those of others.

“Role-playing allows students to learn to feel empathy by putting themselves in someone else’s shoes, experiencing what it might be like to think like another person,” states Mrs. Berry, adding that it is exciting to see the personalities of the bears change with each new cast of students. Every production of The Share Bears is unique, not only because of the students involved but because of their parents. Mrs. Berry says the elaborate scenery, set decorations and costume accessories are all created by parent volunteers. Second grade is not the only grade to present a class show. Mrs. Berry provides all grade levels with the opportunity to perform throughout the school year.

Weston Student on a Mission to Bring Butterflies Back BY STACEY BOMSER

D

uncan Jurman has been passionate about butterflies and butterfly gardening since he was four years old. Now he is sharing his love and expertise with classmates and the community. Through his initiative, Bring Butterflies Back, One Plant at a Time, the NSU University School sophomore is attracting various butterfly species and growing butterfly populations, educating students and the community about plants and butterflies, and empowering others to help the environment. One of the ways Duncan is doing this is through the butterfly gardens and vivarium (screened enclosure) he created at his school. His goal was to bring butterflies back to campus and provide experiential learning opportunities that encourage students to care more about the environment. “Florida has approximately 180 butterfly species, including a high concentration of rare butterflies, and with the butterfly population in danger, I wanted to do something to try to counter the decline through both actual conservation and education,” explains Duncan. USchool students visit the butterfly gardens and vivarium to observe butterflies at each stage of the life cycle. Duncan is working with teachers and administrators to embed the gardens into the

drian, Rebecca and Victoria Alvarez are committed to making the world a better place. Through their YouTube channels, the siblings are promoting environmental and peaceful initiatives. They were recently invited to attend the Earth Charter Education Conference in Costa Rica, sharing insight as to what can be done to mobilize children to help the planet. “We are committed to the welfare of the planet Earth and the rescue of human values. At home we teach our kids how to recycle, respect animals and plants, and also how to be a good person,” explains Maria Sanchez, who manages her children’s YouTube channels, as well as one of her own. A video Adrian posted about monarch butterflies gained the attention of Fundación Valores, a non-profit organization in Spain affiliated with the Earth Charter Initiative. Its goal is to achieve an ethical commitment on the part of society for the creation of a just, sustainable and peaceful world. “The Earth Charter is a letter signed by all towns in the world promoting human equality, peace and respect to the Earth,” explains Adrian, a fifth grader at Indian Trace Elementary School.

“It is important for us kids to follow this cause since we will be the future adults of this world and we need to be prepared to give it our all.” Fundación Valores invited Adrian and his sisters to attend the Earth Charter Education Conference, where the organization was presenting on the topic: “We are all Citizens, and the children say present.” The siblings answered questions about important ways children can help the planet and concluded with messages to the audience of environmentalists and humanitarians. Adrian shared, “We do not have to be adults to the save the world, kids can help too. With our imagination and adult capacity, we can be a great team.” Rebecca, a third grader, encouraged the audience to, “Let all the children of the world be the voice of plants and animals because some people do not respect them.” First grader Victoria said it was important to take care of the planet. “Recycle and give love all over the world.” The Alvarez children encourage other kids to take action and follow their lead. “We would like them to follow the Earth Charter values and start

ROTARY NEWS

Weston Rotary Promotes Pedal Power BY LAURA DOBRZANSKI, WESTON ROTARY CLUB COMMUNITY CHAIR

T

he Rotary Club of Weston teamed up with the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale Cypress Creek to send over 400 bicycles to a South African Rotary Club for distribution to rural African communities desperately in need. The two South Florida Rotary clubs have been working together since 2017. Annually, the clubs collect 400 bicycles which have been sent for a total of over 1,200 bikes. Throughout the year the Rotary Club of Weston supports the collection of bikes from MP 84:21 71/42/01 the local community by promoting the cause at area schools and through the Broward Sherriff’s Office. The Weston Rotary Club has its annual Run For Tomorrow event in December, which it uses to promote this project and uses as its final place for collection and disassembly. This Rotary year, the group was able to contribute about half of the bikes for the shipment, with the other half collected by the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale Cypress Creek. 82 MAY 2019 | OUR CITY WESTON | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

Following the run event, the bikes are stored in various storage facilities donated by Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Fort Lauderdale Cypress Creek. The assembly day takes place in January and is hosted by fellow Cypress Creek Rotarians at a warehouse facility in which they take over the parking lot to prepare the bicycles for transportation. Members of both clubs join in this endeavor including volunteers from the local high school and Interact clubs. On this day, the volunteers perform minor repairs, remove wheels and pedals, and pack the shipping container with as many bikes as possible. To ship the bicycles, a 40 by 20-foot shipping container is required. This container is donated by the Rotary Club of Weston. The Rotary Club of Empangeni, Rotary District 9370 in South Africa, has been championing the South African club’s bicycle distribution project. The Rotary Club of Empangeni receives the container, which they turn into a mini bike shop conducting the re-assembly and other various repairs for the bikes. The bicycles

are then distributed to rural communities that do not have public transportation. The club provides bikes to children in several Rotary Districts, where it is common for students to walk long distances to school. Neurolens announced the first and only prescription glasses to have a contoured prism that reduces the headaches, neck/shoulder pain and eyestrain that patients get from being on electronics such as computers, tablets, and cellphones, as well as reading or doing detailed work. After years of research done at a neurology center, it was discovered that there is a relationship between the eyes and the brain. When these studies were conducted, patients that suffered from those symptoms had a trait in common: a misalignment in their vision when using digital devices. It has been said that people usually do not suspect that these symptoms are related to their eyes. Since Americans spend more than nine hours a day on electronic devices, the visual demands of this digital lifestyle have increased the number of these individuals who experience symptoms. The main objective of Neurolenses is to give the patient the most comfortable vision possible. In a survey of patients who decided to purchase Neurolenses, it was seen that 93% found symptom relief and 73% stated that their symptoms were reduced or completely eliminated after 45 days.

Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology is a treatment that has been offered to patients for more than 40 years, however, there has been an increasing interest in the last decade. Orthokeratology is a non-surgical technique where patients wear a special kind of contact lens designed to gradually reshape the cornea, or the clear covering of the front of the eye. When doing this, it allows an improvement or elimination of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia in a safe and reversible manner. Unlike regular soft contact lenses, these are more rigid contact lenses that are uniquely designed for the patient and are specifically designed to be worn overnight while sleeping. When they are removed in the morning, the patient will have clear vision without the use of glasses or contacts during the day. Since these lenses are customized to each individual, we use an instrument called a corneal Topographer that shows exactly how your cornea is shaped. The information from the cornea mapping, in addition to the size of the cornea and the patient’s specific prescription, is used to design the retainer lenses needed to create the Ortho-K effect.

Scleral Lenses

If you have been told in the past that you were unable to wear contact lenses because of an irregular cornea, keratoconus, corneal transplant, history of RK, Lasik or PRK trauma-damaged corneas, you might want to consider wearing scleral lenses. Scleral lenses have gained popularity in the last decade and are specially designed to cover the whole corneal surface which makes the lens rest on the “white” of the eye (sclera). These largerdiameter gas permeable lenses offer the crisp vision of a gas permeable lens combined with the comfort of a soft contact lens. n For a consultation or more information, you can reach Dr. Therrien at Weston Family Eyecare, 4472 Weston Road, or call 954-888-9393. All Set For Surgery? A Holistic Approach to Prep and PostSurgical Healing DR. TAMY FAIERMAN, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON

I

n medicine today, the concepts of holistic practice and the credo of integrative medicine are growing rapidly in virtually all fields of practice. So how does integrative and holistic medicine fit into the practice of plastic surgery? It’s a great question and here is how I see it from my perspective. I have always applied a holistic and integrative approach to my own health and wellness as well as for my family. It really just stems from my thinking that we should not treat everything with just medicine or medical procedures and that we can incorporate complementary, holistic and integrative approaches at the same time. I incorporate into my plastic surgery practice the same perspective with my own patients. The art of plastic surgery procedures is not just in the medical procedure or treatment itself, but also the way patients prepare themselves for procedures and the way they take care of themselves when healing. So how can one take a holistic approach to Plastic Surgery? Below are a few things to consider: 4-6 Weeks Prior to Surgery: I encourage my patients, if time permits, to begin preparation prior to surgery. I work with a team of professionals, so a typical prep could include working with a nutritionist on a nutritional detox or weight loss. Often times and based on blood work, Vitamin supplements or IV therapy for nutrient support and wound healing can be necessary. Exercise is also very important to build health before surgery. Good forms of exercise include walking, cycling and swimming. I suggest exercising minimally for thirty minutes every day. Lastly, herbal teas and tinctures that include ingredients such as turmeric, bromelain, or oats all help with inflammation, stress and healing. Get Your Body and Mind in a Good Place: Cosmetic surgery is voluntary surgery but preparing mentally is still very important. I am a huge believer in meditation and visualization, so I built a meditation room in my office. Visualizing yourself healthy, resting, healing post surgery and happy all helps. There are also a lot of meditation apps to choose from. Touch Therapy: After surgery, have Reiki, lymphatic drainage, massage therapy or touch therapy. After operating for 20+ years, my opinion is that these light hand placements and healing energies have a powerful way to enhance the healing process. How I approach each patient differs, but my experience over the years is that holistic and integrative preparation prior to procedures usually results in a quicker, less painful healing experience. Getting the mind and the body working together prior to surgery helps patients heal after surgery. Partner with your doctor. From the beginning of patient contact, our office is proactive by introducing holistic and integrative approaches to both pre-surgery treatment as well as healing. These non-traditional techniques as a follow on to cosmetic surgery procedures can set any plastic surgery practice apart. I think it is one of the calling cards of a practice because the key to achieving the best result still lies in taking the same big picture holistic stance. n Dr. Tamy M. Faierman is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, writer, beauty and wellness expert, and founder of the Tamy M. Faierman Holistic Spa and Wellness Center. LEGALLY SPEAKING

The Gray Divorce BY EVAN BARON he Baby Boomer generation has had a huge impact on many categories of American life; from music to art to technology. Those same boomers are now impacting family law as well. Statistics have shown that the overall divorce rate over the last 20 plus years has declined. This could be because the marriage rate has decreased as well. In spite of this overall decline in divorce, the rate for those couples over 50 has doubled over the same span of time. One out of every four divorces filed within the last few years were involving couples over 50. This increase in the divorce rate of these boomers, has led to the term “Gray Divorce”. There are probably many factors which have led to this increase. As this generation increases in age, more and more people are celebrating their 50th birthday and as such the over 50 population has increased. The greater the number of people, the greater the number of divorces. There are however other factors to be considered as well. People are generally living longer, which results in potentially very long marital relationships. As people age their prospective on life sometimes changes as well. Their mortality comes into issue and couples who are not happy in their marriage, no longer wish to remain together for the later part of their lives. Some couples wait until their children are grown and have established their own lives. Parents feel that after raising their children it is now “their time” to explore and enjoy life. Unfortunately, in many instances their spouse is not who they wish to share this experience with.

Finances are the most significant issues that accompany divorces for individuals in the later years of life. After years and years of working, owning a home and placing funds in retirement, the plans that were in the past shared, disappear with the signing of a Final Judgment granting the divorce. In Florida, equitable distribution of assets almost always results in an equal division between the parties. As a result, each will have only half of what they owned together. Expenses will increase as there will be the necessity of funding two residences. This often times leads to parents moving in with their children or taking in a roommate. In addition, because of the fact that the majority of their working years are behind them, they have less time to try and re-coup their losses. Homes, which are usually a couple’s largest asset, will often have to be sold. Monthly pension checks divided between the parties, often times resulting in a party having to continue working beyond the normal retirement age. There may be an alimony component which could cause additional financial complications. Although divorce proceedings for more mature adults can be less complicated due to the avoidance of child related issues, there are financial issues which less mature couples do not have to address. I strongly suggest that before decisions are made it would be best to discuss your concerns with an experienced family law attorney. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

TEE TO GREEN

Are You Taking A Proper Divot? BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL divot isn’t just a chunk of turf that chases your golf ball after impact. A proper divot comes from hitting the ball before the club strikes the ground on iron shots. Skilled ball strikers do this consistently because they know how to position their ball correctly at address behind the bottom of their downswing arc. For proper divots and solid irons, you should learn how to find that point in your swing, too. Divots and Skill Level A TV commentator and PGA Tour Pro studied divots from players of all skill levels for his book and he discovered that PGA Tour players take divots that start in front of the ball and bottom out four to five inches ahead of the starting point. High handicappers, on the other hand, start their divots four to five inches behind to ball. In golf terms, that means they hit the ball fat if they don’t hit the ball thin or top it. According to this TV commentator, a proper divot is long, deep and starts in front of the ball. He believes moving a player’s divot forward is a key to improvement. Chipping Drill I instruct my students to use chip shots from sand traps to teach players how to take a proper divot. I draw a line in the sand and position the ball along the line. To get the ball out of the sand, and take a divot in front of the ball, as I demonstrate, a player has to lean the club shaft toward the target and create a flat front wrist at the impact position. The golfer must hit the ball and then the sand without disturbing the line to perform the drill correctly. The Bottom of the Arc The key to taking proper divots in front of the golf ball is to get your club head to bottom out at the same place each time. All the lessons I received at the various golf camps and lessons with my PGA Professional instructors taught that the consistent swing bottom comes from proper lower body action in the downswing. You must shift your weight to your front foot coming down, and your back knee should point to the ball at impact. This will help you hit down on the ball. Repeating that move and producing the same divot with every iron shot is one of the most important parts of the swing a golfer must learn. Ball Position The arc of your club changes as your clubs get longer or shorter. Therefore, you may need to move your ball position around slightly to place the ball in front of the bottom of the arc. I always instruct my students to play the ball in the center of his stance for short irons and closer to his left instep for middle irons and long irons. To find the bottom of your arc, you can draw a line on the ground and see where the club strikes the ground with different clubs when you make practice swings.

Federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities are based on population totals and breakdowns by sex, age, race and other factors. The census also ensures that each community gets the right number of representatives in government. Your community benefits the most when the census counts everyone. When you respond to the census, you help your community gets its fair share of the more than $675 billion per year in federal funds spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works and other vital programs. The goal is to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place. One of the things people forget to do it seems, is to count their children under the age of four, and this is vitally important for resources and funding! We need to count everyone -- no matter what their age, from 1 day to 101+. Weston will be providing you with lots of information on the 2020 Census over the upcoming year. Please help us by encouraging others you know in the community, at church, at work, in a social group, to be counted. It is essential for our community. The Census is also a great source for part-time and temporary jobs paying on average of over $17.00 per hour. Please visit 2020census.gov/jobs. Leading into summer fun, an important reminder for all: never leave children unsupervised in or around any body of water. Drownings are 100% preventable. Lastly, come join the parade! An annual favorite, the Weston July 4th Hometown Parade steps off at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 4th. This year’s theme honors ‘The Everyday Hero.’ Be a participant or view from along the parade route – both are free and so much fun! Visit our website for a parade application today or call the Weston Community Center at 954-389-4321.

ASK THE EXPERT

Moms, Give Yourself A Gift This Mother’s Day BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result—smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing, and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸▸ Breast augmentation ▸▸ Breast lift ▸▸ Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) ▸▸ Butt lift ▸▸ Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as removal of the excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover. Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.

PET CARE

CBC and Chemistry Profile BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM lood testing is commonly used to help diagnose disease or pinpoint injury in animals. It can also help determine the state of your pet’s health during regular physical exam visits. Although a complete blood count (CBC) or a chemistry profile can be performed separately, these tests are frequently done at the same time; when the results are interpreted together, they provide a good overview of many of the body’s functions. As with any other diagnostic test, results of a CBC and chemistry profile are not interpreted in a vacuum. Your veterinarian will combine this information with physical exam findings, medical history, and other information to assess your pet’s health status and determine if additional testing should be recommended. How Is a CBC and Chemistry Profile Performed? To perform a CBC and chemistry profile, your veterinary team must first obtain a small blood sample from your pet. This procedure is usually very quick; it may take only a few seconds if the patient is well behaved. For patients that are very frightened or not well behaved, your veterinary team may want to use a muzzle, towel, or other gentle restraint device. In some cases, such as in patients with very thick fur, it may be necessary to shave the hair from the area where blood will be drawn. This is often a good way to find the vein quickly, and the hair will grow back. Some veterinary offices have in-house blood analysis equipment, so they can perform a CBC and chemistry profile in the office and have results the same day. Other offices send blood samples to an outside laboratory for these tests to be performed. If an outside laboratory is used, results are generally available

B

within one to two days. Because a recent meal changes the blood and may affect the results of a chemistry profile, your veterinarian may recommend that your pet not receive any food for eight to 12 hours before blood is drawn. In most cases, water can still be offered. Please let your veterinarian know if this temporary fast will be a problem for you or your pet. Also, be sure to tell your veterinarian about any medications or supplements that your pet is receiving, as some products can alter the results of a chemistry profile. What Is a CBC and Chemistry Profile Used For? A CBC and chemistry profile is an important component of wellness blood work. Even if your pet is young and healthy, performing this testing periodically helps establish “normal” values for your pet. The next time blood work is performed, your veterinarian can compare the results with previous results to see if anything has changed. Depending on your pet’s age and health history, additional tests (such as thyroid testing or urinalysis) may also be recommended as part of wellness testing. For seniors or chronically ill pets, your veterinarian may recommend blood work more frequently. Wellness blood work screens for many medical conditions, including diabetes and kidney disease. In many cases, early diagnosis and management can improve quality of life and the long-term prognosis for pets with chronic illnesses. Performing a CBC and chemistry panel poses minimal risk for your pet, and in many cases, the information your veterinarian gains from this testing is invaluable. n Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. Cordova and his staff are committed to caring for your precious pets. The practice is located at 2701 Executive Park Drive, Suite 1.
