Happy Holidays!
T
he holiday season is upon us. With our incredible cultural and religious diversity, the winter holidays can have very different meanings for each of our readers. However, one constant is celebrating with friends and loved ones. Our family celebrates on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a “Yankee Swap” gift exchange. In a Yankee Swap, each participant brings a wrapped gift. The gifts are opened in sequence, where each player gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. It is always great fun! Our kids often beg us to celebrate the fictional holiday Festivous, made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Our seventeen-year-old son is particularly interested in Festivous’ “airing of the grievances!” So far, we have successfully resisted! The Jaillet family and everyone at Our City Media wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. We hope you take time to enjoy loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivous! Have a wonderful and safe Holiday Season.

he Museum of Discovery & Science (MODS), in partnership with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Veterinary Care Program and Sea Turtle Care and Conservation Specialists, released its Loggerhead Sea Turtle Ambassador Georgette (Gette) into the wild on Sunday, November 5. Named in memory of generous Museum supporter, George Batchelor and The Batchelor Foundation, Gette resided in the Sea Turtle habitat at MODS since she arrived in October 2022. “Our sea turtle initiative has been an essential part of the Museum’s DNA since opening, and we have released dozens of sea turtles. Our mission is connecting people to inspiring science, and for thousands of MODS’ guests and community members who encountered Gette in our sea turtle observation exhibit, it was a truly meaningful experience,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “With the goal of ocean release, the life sciences team at MODS worked diligently to help Gette sharpen her natural instincts by replicating experiences she will encounter in open waters. Now that she has achieved optimal growth, releasing her into the ocean is conservation in action for all to see.”
SEA TURTLE FACTS
• The Loggerhead is one of seven different species of sea turtles. Six of the species —Green (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate), Kemp’s Ridley (Lepidochlys kempi), Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) and Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) - can be found throughout the ocean, in both warm and cool water. The seventh species, the Flatback (Natator depressus), lives only in Australia. • The Loggerhead and Green sea turtles are listed as threatened. The Leatherback, Hawksbill and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle species are listed as endangered everywhere due to human actions and lifestyles. • Accidental capture by fishing gear, which often results in death, is the greatest threat to most sea turtles. Climate change also impacts sea turtle nesting beaches and eggs. • Sea turtle populations are slowly recovering thanks to the collaborative effort of scientists, non-profits, universities, grassroots organizations and many dedicated people.
On July 23, 2022, Gette was hatched at FAU in Boca Raton as part of a study on how climate change affects the endangered sea turtle population. On October 25, 2022, Gette came to the Museum weighing 300 g (0.6 lbs.) For a year, Gette munched on daily buffets of shrimp, capelin and herring. She honed her swimming skills while keeping plenty of snappiness for a turtle. Now Gette, at 6.3 kilograms (13.9 lbs.) with a carapace length of 35.9 cm, is big and strong enough to journey into the wild. On October 31, 2023, Gette was transported via boat to a nearshore weed line where she was returned to the open water. Bon Voyage, Gette! The Museum has a permit from FWC that allows it to hold one loggerhead turtle for educational purposes. The FWC is responsible for matching turtles with educational centers. The release location is determined based on where the turtles were originally found and the conditions of the waters around Florida. While Loggerhead nests are the most common type of nest found in Florida, the species is still considered threatened in the state and endangered around the world. Humans pose a big threat to the species, and Gette helped educate visitors on how to make an impact with sea turtles. Simple ideas like picking up trash so it doesn’t end up in a turtle’s belly and avoiding single-use plastic like straws and plastic bags, which can look like food to a hungry sea turtle, can make a big difference. “Special thanks to The Batchelor Foundation, a private Florida foundation focused on grant-making to support children, animals, and the natural environment in South Florida, and FAU for collaborating on this critical environmental initiative,” said Cox. Stay tuned! MODS expects a new Loggerhead hatchling for care and growing bigger soon! Visit and support MODS, join a discussion at the Museum’s Turtle Talks or take a turtle walk with MODS next summer.

One Year: Mayor Sortal’s Note to the Public
W
By Mayor Nick Sortal
elcome to Plantation! I wrapped up one year as your mayor and thought I would share a few thoughts. As you likely know, I took office in November 2022 and the first thing I did was increase communication to our residents. First, of course, is my monthly contribution to this publication. I like sharing our local happenings. Meanwhile, you can subscribe to a twice-monthly newsletter focused on City Hall happenings by clicking on Plantation. org. I have held lunch sessions with most of our city departments and have asked each city department to join my social media committee, where we discuss best practices. The city has a program to acknowledge employees at their five-year mark and every five years after that, but that presentation is at a city council meeting. I wanted to do something special for them around their co-workers. So now I bring a cake into their workplace and we take some time to celebrate our employees’ longevity. My vision for Plantation: As leader of our outstanding administrative staff, our vision is to create the best possible service for the people who live here and maintain our lifestyle where community and tradition are important values. We want to be transparent, so everyone knows what is going on in the city. We want to be welcoming to businesses and help them succeed. The basic functions of the city are in place. The fire and police are stellar, public works has elevated its service in recent months and the recreation options through our parks system is fantastic. That said, we still have to address such issues as housing

and transportation, just like every city is facing now. It is important to be prepared for the future, while maintaining our quality of life. Plantation’s overall county role: We have been very lucky. The work-from-home phenomenon has been great. The companies Chewy, Magic Leap and Jazwares are here. This invites more investment in the area. A portion of our mall in Broward County is shut down, but eventually, the mall will be a hub of activity. Some elements of the mall will remain but most of it will be mixed-use. Also, our Plantation Walk has six or seven restaurants, so we hope those areas get connected. Handling growth: A big challenge is that Plantation grew up as a single-family home community and we have heard loud and clear that our residents want it to stay that way. We can’t ignore that. People have a distrust of government, so we need to respect and navigate that. I think we gained ground in early 2023 when I declared that I would not support Flex units (additional growth) in not only Plantation Acres but all single-family home neighborhoods. Then there’s the Chamber: One of the joys from my first year as mayor has been my association with our Chamber of Commerce. There was a wonderful Mayor’s Ball in April. There have been informative lunches every month, with friendly faces and thriving business owners. And there have almostweekly ribbon-cuttings, from restaurants, to fitness studios to medical offices to even dog-washing services. Yep, the chamber has everything covered.
So let’s do it again! Here’s to a great 2024! Email Mayor@Plantation.org

FESTIVE FLAIR
EIGHT HOLIDAY DECORATING TIPS FOR SOUTH FLORIDA
A
s the holiday season approaches, it's time to bring some festive cheer to our homes in sunny South Florida. While we may not have the traditional winter wonderland with snow-covered landscapes, we have our own unique way of celebrating the holidays under the sun. Here are some holiday decorating tips tailored to our tropical paradise.
1. Embrace the Beachy Vibes: South Florida is famous for its stunning beaches, so why not incorporate beach-themed decor into your holiday setup? Think seashell ornaments, starfish accents, and even a mini beach-themed Christmas tree with light blue and sandy beige hues. 2. Outdoor Decor: With our mild winter climate, take advantage of decorating your outdoor spaces. Hang string lights, place potted plants with red and green flowers, and consider a palm tree adorned with lights and ornaments as a delightful twist on a Christmas tree. 3. Tropical Centerpieces: Instead of traditional holiday centerpieces, opt for arrangements featuring tropical flowers like hibiscus, orchids, and bird-of-paradise. Place them in festive vases or containers with beachy accents. 4. Seashell Wreaths: Create a unique wreath by crafting one from seashells collected during your beach trips. Add some faux greenery and a ribbon for a holiday touch. 5. Coastal Stockings: Upgrade your stockings to beachy versions with seashell,
starfish, or flip-flop motifs. Hang them on the mantel or a designated stocking holder. 6. Twinkling Lights: South Florida nights are perfect for creating a magical atmosphere with twinkling lights. Hang them on trees, fences, and around outdoor seating areas for a warm and inviting glow. 7. Outdoor Dining Al Fresco: Take advantage of the mild weather by setting up your holiday dinner or brunch outdoors. Decorate your outdoor dining area with tropical tableware, festive napkins, and candlelight. 8. Fresh Greenery: While pine trees may not grow naturally in South Florida, you can still find fresh greenery like eucalyptus and palm fronds to use in your holiday arrangements. In South Florida, holiday decorating is all about embracing our unique environment and infusing it with seasonal spirit. So, whether you're enjoying a beachside holiday or celebrating at home, these tips will help you create a festive atmosphere that's as warm and inviting as the South Florida sun. Happy decorating, and may your holidays be filled with joy and sunshine!

Marti Terziu Fire Prevention Art & Literature Contest Winners Recognized By Jon Duka
O
ctober was Fire Prevention Month, and the Plantation Fire Department had many activities to bring awareness to the community. One highlighted event is always the annual poster and essay contest in which neighborhood schools are encouraged to participate. Almost 50 years ago, in 1976, Marti Terziu developed the contest as a vehicle to bring the fire prevention message home through Plantation’s school-aged children in a creative, yet educational way. This year’s fire prevention theme “Cooking Safety Starts with You” reminds everyone to be aware of the risk of fires and how to prevent them. “October is fire prevention month, and we get to celebrate what we do all year long,” said Deputy Chief Joel Gordon, “Here in Plantation, we partner with the schools to have students give their best interpretation of the annual theme. This year’s submissions hit it out of the park!”
“The Marti Terziu Art & Literature Contest” winners were announced and recognized at a Red-Carpet awards ceremony at the Plantation City Council meeting at the end of the month. This year’s winners included: • Grade K-3 Art - Ethan Hopkins from Central Park Elementary School • Grade 4-5 Art - Mokshitha Channa, Central Park Elementary School • Grade K-3 Literature - Spencer Glassberg, Central Park Elementary School • Grade 4-5 Literature - Nya Brumwell, Tropical Elementary School • Grade 4-5 Digital - Juliette Morrison, Central Park Elementary School The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, is that in a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy.

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING
LOTTERY DREAM OR FINANCIAL NIGHTMARE: HOW TO MAKE YOUR JACKPOT LAST By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
O
ne of my New Year’s resolutions is to win the Lottery, which I am sure is the goal of many. What do we need to know if we win? Edwin Castro won a huge $2.04 billion in the lottery on February 14, 2023, taking home $997.6 million at once, instead of getting it over 30 years. Someone in Maine also hit the jackpot with $1.35 billion. Winning the lottery means you need to think about how to use that money wisely. You don't want to lose it all like some winners do. Be patient. There's a grace period to claim your prize; in Florida, it's a 180-day countdown. Don't rush. Plan how to spend your money even before you get it. Draw your line in the sand. When your bank account balloons, so might your fan base. Family, old buddies, and even scammers may line up for a share. It's okay to say no. Still, you might want to give some away to people or charities. Remember, big gifts might mean big taxes. For 2023, you can give away $17,000 without tax or $34,000 with your spouse. Next year, it's $18,000, or $36,000 for couples. Think about taxes. The winner from California chose a one-time payment but won't get the full amount because of taxes. Before spending on big things, wait until you've paid all taxes. For example, about 24% of the winnings go to the IRS upfront. Then there's more to pay in April. The “lottery curse." This curse has become almost as famous as the lottery itself. Here's how the nightmare scenario typically unfolds for some unlucky winners: Imagine this: The moment you've won, your life turns into a non-stop party. Sounds great, right? But the plot twists. A luxury yacht here, a mansion there, and why not invest in your cousin's idea for underwater hotels? Suddenly, those millions that seemed endless are dwindling fast. Now that you're living the high life, your old budgeting habits have gone out the window. You've swapped coupons for caviar and budget flights for private jets. The thrill of buying whatever you want has replaced the satisfaction of saving for what you need. And in the final scene, just as quickly as your bank account ballooned, it deflates. You're left wondering where it all went wrong. The lottery dream has turned into a financial nightmare. It's a cautionary tale, but one that's all too real for some. Winning big can be confusing. Talk to professionals before buying or giving away a lot. Financial advisors can guide you to grow your money. Tax advisors help you understand the best way to take your winnings and make sure your taxes are right. As estate planners, we work with your advisors to make sure your money is safe, taxes are low, and your wealth goes where you want when you're gone. We'll help you make a plan that lasts and avoid quick choices you might regret. Contact us to set up a meeting and plan for your lottery winnings to benefit you and your family in the long term.

C
oncert series moves to Pine Island Park: There’s a change in venue this year for our popular Rock the Park concert series. We are now at Pine Island Park, just west of the Broward Mall. The park has been refurbished and the main field is artificial turf. (That said, please no gum or items to damage the field.) We think you’ll enjoy the setup. The biggest reason is parking. There are ample spaces near the field and extra room at the Broward Mall. You may not have noticed, but parking often was overflowing at Plantation Central Park. The seven-show schedule runs the first Friday of the month from November through May, except February and April are on Saturdays. BeSMART - Gun Locks: We were pleased to present more than 100 gun locks to members of the BeSMART program, which educates the public on firearm storage. Councilmember Jennifer Andreu and I took the stage with our BeSMART volunteers and the Plantation Police Community Engagement Unit at the Family Fall Festival at Volunteer Park. For more information on the five steps a person can take to BeSMART, go to besmartforkids.org Dog-washing business: Pet Bar, a dog washing and grooming center, has opened on the south portion of The Fountains. Pet Bar has seven stations for people to wash or shampoo their dogs. They’ll either do it for you or give you a do-it-yourself spot (and a lower price). It takes about an hour for small dogs, about an hour and 45 minutes for large ones. Call 754-701-0972 or go to PetBarInc.com. South Plantation custodian honored: I was delighted to present a proclamation to Maria Rodriguez, a South Plantation High custodian retiring after 26 loving years at the school. Maria arrived from Havana, Cuba in the early 1970s with her family. She learned English and graduated from South Plantation High in 1977. She served as a Facilities Serviceperson, where the faculty and staff of the Paladin Family chose her as its Employee of the Year multiple times. She was also known for making and sharing her "Cafecito" with staff, giving them a taste of her heritage and a caffeine boost to get them through the school day. Health rejuvenation studio opens: A cutting-edge health rejuvenation practice has opened at Market on University, creating an obvious metaphor for a strip mall that was flattened by a massive, memorable explosion four years ago. It’s called iCRYO and joins a slew of recent additions. Padrino’s Cuban restaurant, My VLMA martial arts studio and Salons by JC hair salon have also hosted ribbon cuttings this year. StretchLab and anchor restaurant Burton’s Grill and Bar is in the works. There are about 35 iCRYOs across over a dozen U.S. states. Go to iCRYO.com. Money for Body Cams: The Plantation Police Department (PPD) was awarded a grant for $400,000 toward the implementation of body-worn cameras, from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP). We’re one of 52 agencies in the nation awarded the 2023 funds. PPD has already begun the procurement process to move forward with the implementation. There are many companies that operate a body-worn camera program and we have a committee to explore which one is best for us.
