Honoring Healthcare Heroes
October heralds the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month: every year, the world witnesses unexpected bursts of pink. High school football players don pink socks in tribute to mothers’ and grandmothers’ cancer battles. Office workers wear pink ribbons signifying their support. The global movement for Breast Cancer Awareness has not only illuminated the challenges of breast cancer but also fueled immense strides in research funding.
The Our City Media family is no stranger to the horrors of breast cancer. Some of us have watched loved ones grapple with a diagnosis and eventually overcome it, while others have faced the pain of loss. Throughout these experiences, one constant remained: the relentless dedication of healthcare professionals. Their unwavering commitment to ensuring optimum health is truly commendable.
As highlighted by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, nearly 1 million Floridians have chosen careers in healthcare. This includes 83,000 doctors, 190,000 nurses, 66,000 EMTs and Paramedics, alongside hundreds of thousands in support roles.
This edition of Our City magazine celebrates some of these “Healthcare Heroes.” Discover the stories of individuals who continue to uplift our community.
A heartfelt thank you to all the healthcare workers from everyone here at Our City Media for guiding us towards a healthier and a brighter tomorrow.

MEET LOUIS REINSTEIN
City of Plantation Councilmember Seeks Re-Election
Louis Reinstein has been an active and dedicated member of the Plantation community for decades. With a passion for public service and a deep love for his hometown, Louis is eager to continue making a positive impact. His background in education, law, and community leadership has equipped him with the skills and knowledge necessary to serve the people of Plantation. As he runs for re-election to the City Council, Louis remains committed to fostering growth, preserving the city’s character, and ensuring a bright future for all residents. Let’s learn more about his journey and vision for Plantation.
Tell us a little about yourself and your Plantation history.
My family moved to Plantation in 1974. My family always laughs when I say that I grew up in Plantation at a time when there were more cows than malls. I loved to ride my bicycle to the Towne Mall and ride to the Helen B. Hoffman Library–I still have my original library card from there. My family moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1987, but I came right back after college and graduate school in 1999. I taught middle school and high school in Plantation for four years before starting law school at Nova Southeastern University. It turned out to be a great decision as that is where I met my wife, Adi. We have now lived in our home for seventeen years in the Central Park area and we are blessed with two boys, Daniel and Jonathan.
What has prepared you best to help with your role as Councilmember?
Before serving on our Council, I served on various boards at the city level and county level, as well as many legal boards and philanthropic boards. I believe this experience has given me a great source of knowledge to help me better serve our residents.
In Plantation, I chaired our Educational Advisory Board; I also served as vice-chair of our Parks & Recreation Advisory Board. It was
my experience serving on Parks & Rec, and my commitment to our city that led me to founding and serving as the first chair of the Parks and Recreation Foundation (a 501c3 organization which supports our parks separate from the city). At the county level, I served as the vice-chair of the Broward County Planning Council, chair of the Broward County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, and I served on the Broward County School Oversight Committee. All of this experience and the leadership roles on these boards and committees helped prepare me to serve the residents of our city.
How has the experience of being a Councilmember compared to your expectations?
I love serving on our City Council. I love visiting with residents and meeting people throughout our city. I was surprised when I was first elected that the councilmembers do not have a dedicated office at City Hall for each of them to meet with residents. This is when I created open office hours at the Broward Mall and I have held meeting time every month since being elected. I also created walking time at our parks to explore our great parks with our residents and talk about issues facing our city.
What is something that you have learned about Plantation while serving on the City Council?
I don’t think I truly realized how many programs and activities our city offers its
residents until I got elected. Now, I don’t think a day goes by where there isn’t something city related for me to attend.
What would you say to voters to help them make an informed decision about re-electing you?
If our residents like the direction of our city and if they believe that our Council works well together and that I have made a positive contribution to our City, I respectfully ask for our residents' vote and for their support. I ask them to find my name on the ballot and to vote to re-elect Louis Reinstein for the Plantation City Council.

Broward County Public Schools Continues FREE Meals for the 2024/25 School Year
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), the nation’s sixth-largest school district, announced that it will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students for the 2024/2025 school year. Funding for the meals will come from several programs, including Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), Universal Free Breakfast, and the Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot Year 2.
Several research studies connect access to healthy breakfasts and lunches to academic success for school-aged children. These studies typically focus on the impact of school meal programs, nutrition quality, and their effects on cognitive function, behavior, and academic performance.
A 2013 study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that children who ate breakfast regularly performed better on cognitive tasks, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. Children who skipped breakfast or ate low-nutrient
meals had reduced cognitive function throughout the morning.
A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasized that schools offering nutritious meals through programs like the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program are positively associated with academic achievement.
The CEP offers free meals to all students at 180 eligible schools, where at least 40% of students qualify for federal assistance programs, including SNAP and Medicaid. Families at these schools do not need to fill out an application for meal benefits.
For the remaining 47 non-CEP schools, the Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot Year 2 ensures that all students receive free lunches, regardless of eligibility. Families at these schools are encouraged to
complete an online Meal Benefits application to help sustain the program and potentially access more district benefits. Universal Free Breakfast will also be available at these 47 schools.
In its announcement, the school district noted that it “continues to prioritize student health by providing more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-sodium options, as well as expanding vegan and vegetarian choices.”
JOIN THE TRADITION PLANTATION FIREFIGHTERS
TO HOST 65TH BBQ WITH LIVE MUSIC, FAMILY ACTIVITIES, AND LOCAL FLAVORS
Dear OUR CITY Plantation Readers, I am excited to share with you the details of a long-standing tradition in the City of Plantation Fire Department—the 65th Annual Volunteer Firefighter BBQ. This cherished event dates back to the early days of the Plantation Volunteer Fire Department, originally established to raise awareness and funds for our dedicated team. Over the years, it has evolved into a beloved community gathering where we showcase our highly trained volunteer firefighters and their equipment.
The event kicks off early in the morning with our firefighters firing up the grills to slow-cook slabs of ribs and quartered chickens. The BBQ sauce, famously crafted by our former Mayor, Frank Veltri, has been a hallmark of this tradition. Mayor Veltri carefully guarded his sauce recipe, passing it on to Barry and me as he aged. Though the Mayor passed away in 2006, Barry and I have continued to uphold this tradition, ensuring the event remains as special as ever.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we took a brief hiatus but were thrilled to bring the BBQ back in 2023. Last year, we introduced some exciting changes, including a switch to slow-cooked BBQ pulled pork and BBQ chicken sandwiches, seasoned with a secret spice rub and cooked in a custom smoker trailer provided by Cheney Brothers. Our rescue division also contributes delectable slow-cooked corn on the cob with a variety of toppings.
This year, we are adding a country twist to celebrate our community's agricultural and ranching roots. The event will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including a live band, bounce houses for the kids, a petting zoo, and live fire demonstrations
by our volunteer firefighters. We are also providing local vendors with an opportunity to showcase their goods and services in our vendor area.
The 65th Annual Volunteer Firefighter BBQ is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a celebration of tradition, community, and family fun. We invite you to join us in making this year’s
event a memorable one. Sunday November 3rd, 2024, from 12-5pm at Pine Island Park (Soccer). 8200 S.W. 3rd Street, Plantation, Fl.
Sincerely,
Mark Watters

PLANTATION UPDATE
By Nick Sortal
Banners Honor Veterans: The city has been working for months on a recognition program for our veterans and now banners alongside Broward Boulevard are in place. Public Works employees attached the banners to existing poles on the south side of Broward Boulevard, between NW 70th Avenue and West Tropical Way.
They feature a photo of the servicemember, branch of the military and years of service.
Parks Parties, East and West: Two landmark ceremonies on Aug. 24 commemorated progress on each side of our city.
First was a groundbreaking for North Acres Park, a 15-acre nature area in the Plantation Acres neighborhood. The address is 12001 NW 21st Court. Plantation voters in 2016 approved a bond for parks, public safety and public facilities. North Acres Park was listed in the plans.
That was followed by the dedication of Kingsley Smith Park, in the Park East neighborhood. Mr. Smith, who passed away in 2023, helped organize the Park East neighborhood. The address is 4680 NW 9th Court.
Artist Cey Adams created a large mural along the back wall of the park. Adams has collaborated with notable recording artists such as the Beastie Boys and Kurtis Blow.
Foodies Should Know: Three more restaurants are in the pipeline for Plantation, according to building permits filed in the city:
Cava Restaurant will be in the Plantation Point complex, on the east side of University Drive and south of Sunrise, at 1714 N. University Drive. There will be 18 indoor and 17 outdoor seats. They have 26 locations across the state and specialize in Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
Alacati Restaurant, another Mediterranean restaurant, is at 522 N. Pine Island, in the spot that formerly hosted a Pei Wei. There are 93 seats indoors and 28 on the patio.
Prime K BBQ, Korean Steakhouse, will be at the former Jason’s Deli site, 1361 S. University Drive. There will be 150 indoor seats.
And Dessert, Too: The world, and especially Plantation, can never have too many dessert options, and we gained another one with the ribbon-cutting for Bunnboh Churros. Located at Broward Mall, 8000 W. Broward Blvd, Suite 1327, across from the dining court. Owners asked patrons to “Indulge in our delicious artisan churros, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, served with a variety of sauces and toppings.”
IN HONOR OF HALLOWEEN CELEBRITY ESTATE AND PROBATE NIGHTMARES
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Many believe a substantial portfolio is necessary for an estate plan, but your most valuable asset is your autonomy over your own decisions. About 9 years ago, I had a client whose husband suffered a massive stroke. While he spent months in rehab unable to speak, she was unable to speak for him. Credit card companies, his car lease company and other impersonal institutions refused to communicate with her. She was frantic and helpless. Some easy estate planning would have provided her with the necessary documents to speak on his behalf.
Everyone needs a plan in case the unthinkable happens. Our clients range from Uber drivers to the uber-wealthy because an “Estate Plan” protects more than just money. We all must prepare for any potential incapacity and to consider everything from who will handle your healthcare to who will pay your credit cards if you cannot.
Frequent discussions with the public center around the topic of ‘Probate Nightmares.’ Recent examples, which may be familiar, highlight what should be avoided and serve as a reminder of the essential steps everyone must take.
1. No Will at All: this is called “an intestate estate” and is determined according to state law. The court may make decisions regarding who will receive your assets. The rockstar Prince died without a will. His full sister, five half-siblings, and hundreds more individuals claimed they were related. The IRS fought with his family for over 6 years to determine the value of his taxable estate. Lesson learned: avoid a nightmare by consulting with a trusted attorney to plan for the future.
2. Improperly Executed Will: Aretha Franklin's family assumed she had no will, but then a few handwritten documents were found, and her attorneys found a draft "Will of Aretha Franklin" that was never signed. Not one of the four alleged wills was completed according to state law. This forced her family and assets to remain stuck in court almost four years following her passing, awaiting a judge’s decision. Lesson learned: make sure your documents are properly signed and executed according to state law.
3. Choosing the Right Fiduciaries: Jerry Garcia’s family dealt with a complex will and a complex probate estate. He had named his 3rd wife the Executor (or Personal Representative) to be responsible for ongoing alimony payments to his second wife. This was not a wise decision and led to a family court battle. Lesson learned: choose the right people for the right positions involved in your future.
4. Deciding Who Gets Your “Stuff”: Robin Williams had a well-prepared estate plan, but his memorabilia, including an Academy Award, 6 Golden Globes and multiple Emmys, led to a bitter family feud. Lesson learned: personal property has value, whether emotional or financial. Don’t let your family fight over your belongings. Although each of the celebrities discussed likely had agents, managers, and attorneys heavily involved in their careers, none had an ideal estate plan.
Given the ever-changing laws and the complexities often inherent in today's families, everyone—famous or not—needs to take time to protect their loved ones with a complete, updated estate plan.
WHY WOMEN ARE TRAINING IN BJJ, MUAY THAI, AND MMA
By John Wai
More women are embracing martial arts like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Muay Thai, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), not just for self-defense, but because these disciplines are practical, fun to train, and get you in top shape. These martial arts emphasize real-world combat scenarios, making them highly effective and empowering for women.
Why BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA?
BJJ teaches ground fighting and leverage techniques, allowing women to defend against opponents of any size. Muay Thai uses punches, kicks, elbows, and knees to offer a versatile approach to stand-up combat, while MMA combines both ground and striking skills for well-rounded effectiveness. These martial arts focus on realistic self-defense, helping women gain confidence in handling physical confrontations by relying on technique and strategy rather than brute strength.
Fun and Fitness Combined
Training in BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA is not just empowering—it’s an incredible way to get in shape. Women enjoy the dynamic, engaging nature of these martial arts, where each session
is different and challenging. These sports provide a full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, all while learning real-world skills. The result is a fun, effective way to stay fit, without the monotony of traditional fitness routines.
A Supportive Atmosphere for Women
Many martial arts academies have cultivated welcoming, supportive environments that encourage women to feel comfortable and confident while training. With the guidance of skilled instructors and a positive training atmosphere, women can thrive and grow in these challenging sports. The community that develops among training partners helps create a space where women can push their limits and achieve their goals, both in martial arts and in life.
Women who train in BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA often experience a significant boost in confidence, self-esteem, and self-worth. These disciplines push both physical and mental limits, leading to personal growth and a stronger sense of accomplishment. The focus and discipline
required during training also provide an excellent outlet for stress, leaving women feeling more balanced and happier in their everyday lives. Martial arts offer more than just fitness—they foster a deep sense of inner strength and well-being.
As more women discover the benefits of combative martial arts, they are finding strength, confidence, and a sense of self-assurance that goes beyond the mats.

While sharing human foods with our dogs can be a joyous experience, it is essential to remember that a balanced and nutritionally complete dog food is the foundation of their diet. When offering human foods as treats, always do so in moderation and avoid items that could be harmful, such as foods containing garlic, onions, chocolate, grapes and raisins. Consulting with your veterinarian about your dog's dietary needs and preferences is crucial to ensure they live a healthy and happy life as your loyal companion.
