From Samhain to All Hallows Eve to Halloween

D

o you celebrate the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain? If you or your kids are dressing up to go trick-or-treating this month you just might.

Believe it or not, Halloween dates back about 2,000 years to the area that is now Ireland and the British Islands. The Celts, who inhabited those islands at the time, celebrated their new year on November 1st. The day marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter.

For the Celts, winter was a period of struggle and often death. They believed that on that night the barrier between the living and the dead would open and the ghosts of the dead would return.

The Celts burned huge bonfires and wore costumes consisting of animal skins and even heads. Their priests, called Druids, would attempt to contact the spirits and tell people’s fortunes.

After the Romans conquered the British Isles, the celebration was combined with a Roman festival that commemorates the passing of the dead, called Feralia. About 600 years later Christianity had spread throughout Europe and Pope Boniface IV established the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day, which was later changed to All Soul’s Day, in honor of the dead. It was celebrated on the same day and using the same customs as Samhain. The Middle English term “All Hallows” which translates to “All Souls” evolved somewhere along the way to the word Halloween.

Much has changed over the last 2,000 years. Today, Halloween is a festive time focused more on children’s enjoyment. No longer do adults wear macabre costumes made of animal skins. Rather, the holiday today features excited children dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters and superheroes merrily going from house to house collecting bags full of candy.

How ever you choose to celebrate Halloween, make sure it’s fun and safe.

Not Your Mama’s Craft Show

he GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club is proud to announce that they are bringing back a bygone tradition. From 1963 to 1983 the popular club held a major two-day craft fundraiser and bazaar. Over the years, the anticipated craft fair was held in the Lauderhill Mall, King’s Department Store in Plantation, The Plantation Town Mall, and Deicke Auditorium. It later became the “GFWC Antique & Vintage Show” for 36 years.

However, a unique twist to the annual show will be coming back to the Volunteer Park Community Center on November 9th and 10th. This year, the 2019 Craft Fair committee is hard at work to re-invent the show for today’s market. Besides beloved traditional crafts, “Not Your Mama’s Craft Show” will feature many new crafts, plus unique handmade and seasonal treasures just in time for the holidays. Vendors are currently on a waitlist as it has been sold-out for quite some time proving that this will be a successful event.

“This is a very fun event for our Club as we have an excellent group of craft fair volunteers who are putting long hours into making this an outstanding community event,” exclaimed Event Chair Joan King.

South Plantation High School Co-Editor Makes Headlines

wenty-two years ago, The Culpepper Journalism Foundation (CJF) was established to honor Dr. Alyce Culpepper after she retired from Broward County Public Schools. The purpose of CJF is to promote excellence in scholastic journalism just as the exemplary educator did in her classroom, while providing educational and financial assistance to high school underclassmen so they can attend summer journalism programs at universities.

This year, not only one, but two high school seniors were awarded with the 2019-2020 Culpepper Journalism Foundation fellowship. One of these young women was South Plantation’s very own Ysabella De Lauro.

The Co-Editor of the The Sword and Shield newspaper actually attended two programs which no other CJF fellow has ever attended. The first was at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill in June and the other at Yale University in August.

“This is the first time an applicant applied and attended more than one program,” stated Executive Director Alyce Culpepper. “Ysabella searched for unique programs and found out-of-state universities which had ones that interested her.”

The ambitious teen’s first opportunity was at UNC. The traditional summer program allowed her

to improve upon her graphic design skills by using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign which was helpful since she was previously the Features Editor for The Sword and Shield. Students shared their school’s publications and talked about their struggles. Additionally, they listened to guest speakers and editors, and got hands-on experiences with other types of journalism like yearbooks and podcasts.

“I learned how to enhance our paper, as well as organize and prioritize stories,” said Ysabella. “This program helped broaden my perspectives and showed me that journalism includes many different forms of scholastic media. It also gave me a glimpse of

what college life is like since I’ll be there next year.”

In late August, she traveled to the prestigious private Ivy League research university in Connecticut.

The Yale Daily News (YDN) program was held in the YDN newsroom where students worked on their own issues by writing articles, taking photos, and creating illustrations.

“As I walked in the door of the YDN, I couldn’t believe I was there! I was a big fan of Rory Gilmore, a character of the TV program Gilmore Girls, who was a Yale journalism major and editor of The Yale Daily News.

I was the only high schooler to be asked to work late to finish the first issue of YDN for the community. I was surrounded by editors, graphic designers, artists and photographers. It was so cool to work alongside such passionate and motivated team members,” exclaimed Ysabella.

Since its inception, the Culpepper Journalism Foundation has awarded more than $42,000 to eighty-four rising juniors and seniors from almost two dozen different schools to attend summer programs, and then return to their high schools to be mentors to their classmates.

Mirror Lake Elementary Reflects on Their 50th Anniversary

side from celebrating a successful start to the 2019-2020 academic year, Mirror Lake Elementary School plans on celebrating a whole lot more. The Plantation grade school just commemorated their 50th-anniversary last month. The big celebration included the beginning of a mini facelift of sorts.

school near the specialized program classrooms. Home Depot sponsored the project and the talented airbrush artist came out once again to paint an incredible mural on the outside wall. The artwork depicts children of all abilities and it is appropriately titled “A Welcoming School”.

“Mirror Lake received the ‘Welcoming School of Excellence’ in 2014 and we continue to refresh and present curriculum to children to embrace diversity every day,” stated Principal Marlen Veliz.

Additionally, the media center received Mr. Ram’s artistic touch with some other airbrush paintings. The district is in the process of upgrading the center with new furnishings, computers, carpeting, shelving, and other new supplies along with state-of-theart 21st-century equipment.

Principal Marlen Veliz loved the idea and wanted to make other areas beautiful just the same. However,

with safety of the utmost concern, she decided to install an artful entryway door with a full-length decal of the school mascot. The dual-purpose image of the dolphin allows those inside to see out, but those on the outside not to see in.

“These decals not only show us off as the ‘Home of the Dolphins’, but also double as a safety screen for our students. Such a clever effect can be added to many more windows throughout our campus with extra funding. We want to include many more safety decals for our school and

are currently looking for sponsors.,” explained the proud principal.

“So many wonderful changes have taken place to give our campus a ‘facelift’ for this wonderful occasion. Our families and staff were so excited to begin the new year when they saw the beautiful new additions to the building.

Plantation High School Aerospace Program Blasts Off

lantation High School (PHS) Aerospace students were recognized for winning 6th and 7th places in the national finals at The American Rocketry Challenge. The Colonels have now earned their 11th top-ten win at the largest student aerospace competition in the world. PHS is the only Florida school to have ever placed in the top-ten.

The aerospace students also placed 3rd overall at NASA’s Student Launch Initiative (SLI) with their eight-foot rocket which flew to over a mile in altitude while collecting data over a remote-controlled robotic antenna which earned them the “Most Innovative Approach to Mission” award for their novel design. This was their 22nd successful launch with NASA for their Student Launch program.

At the helm of these award-winning students is Joseph P. Vallone. The Aerospace Technologies and

Design Instructor and the Career Technical Education Department Head was teaching physics years ago when he wanted to get his students involved in a real-world application of what they were learning in class. So, the enthusiastic educator sold the idea of making rockets for a contest to a handful of students and the project took off!

The students were sold and entered the contest making rockets out of any scrap they could find, launching on campus, and failing miserably, yet they had the spark to continue the following year and made the national finals and have been winning ever since. In fact, they have been so successful over the years that the contest

organizers have instituted rules limiting the number of students and teams a single school can enter in a competition.

“With every top 20-win, schools are invited to write a proposal to NASA to participate in their Student Launch Initiative. These rockets are roughly 8 ft tall, weighing up to 25 lbs. and fly to a mile altitude while conducting some sort of scientific experiment during flight. Many of our experiments are based around electronic payloads that the students build and program from scratch,” explained Vallone.

As part of the program, the students also work with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University to earn a small Unmanned Aerial System Safety Certification which is an industry recognized certification in drone piloting. Furthermore, the ambitious group continually does outreach activities with younger students.

“Many of my students leave PHS and go into STEM fields like computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and aerospace engineering. I have former students who have interned at NASA, Lockheed Martin, ULA, and SpaceX. The last Delta V Heavy launch from Cape Canaveral had a PHS Aerospace alumnus as the payload integration engineer.

This is akin to a high school football coach watching one of his players score the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl,” exclaimed Vallone.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Use in the Foot and Ankle

H

ealing after an injury involves a well-orchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets.

Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone marrow and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process.

For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures.

New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopedic procedures.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets

and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells.

What conditions can it treat?

PRP can be used to treat arthritis (foot or ankle), ligament injuries (acute or chronic), tendon injuries (acute or chronic), joint pain, chronic inflammatory conditions, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, chronic nerve irritation (neuritis), shin splints and heel spurs.

How does the PRP process work?

Doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes.

What happens after that?

The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray.

The New Definition of A Gifted Student

T

eachers are dedicated and eager to give their students the best possible education. However, in order to do so, they need many tools to bring their classroom dreams to life. Unfortunately, many dig deep into their own pockets to provide their students with necessary items to assist in their learning experience.

A history teacher in a Bronx public high school was surprised to learn how much money he and his colleagues were spending on books, art supplies, and the many other materials. The ambitious instructor then decided to create a website where teachers could post classroom project requests, and donors could choose the ones they wanted to support. Fast forward almost two decades later and every public school in America can utilize DonorsChoose.org to get what they need.

Jordanna Egan, Tropical Elementary School second grade teacher, discovered the program six years ago and has been using it for her classroom ever since. From LEGOS and books to rocking stools and magic sand, DonorsChoose has helped this dedicated educator give her students the tools and experiences they need for a great education.

“The elementary grades are such important years.

I love to watch my students grow both personally and academically. Although they are all very different, they all have one thing in common, they love coming to school. We have a lot of fun rooted in STEM in our classroom,” exclaimed Egan.

A typical day in the local educator’s classroom

begins with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). She encourages and challenges her students to think outside of the box. She recently met her most recent DonorsChoose goal which was to get dryerase tables. These tables promote creative and collaborative problem solving which happens to be a pivotal element of STEM. “I have yet to meet a student who does not get excited and motivated by both markers and color. These tables will motivate my students to show their thinking in a way that isn’t permanent and allows room for mistakes. Many students are limited by what they are comfortable showing because they are so scared to make mistakes. These tables provide these students with a tool that takes this constraint away,” explained Egan. “The possibilities are truly endless. I am excited to add these tables to our classroom. I have the next generation of industrial, mechanical, and electrical engineers in my classroom.”

Egan has been so pleased with the program that she is currently a DonorsChoose ambassador. The position allows her to train her fellow educators and help them obtain funding.

BY MAYOR LYNN STONER o anyone new to South Florida, they may believe we have only three seasons: hot, hotter, and stay inside! But those of us who have lived here a while know we have multiple seasons, even if they aren’t as obvious as those up north.

October is the unofficial start of the South Florida fall season. We feel it right away: from the cooler breezes to the moderate temperatures and lower humidity. It’s the perfect season to get out and enjoy all that the City of Plantation has to offer its residents

and visitors.

Fall is also a great time to connect with neighbors and friends at one of the many events hosted by the City. The City’s annual Halloween and Safety Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 19 at Volunteer Park. Your Trick-or-Treaters will enjoy a Children’s carnival, games & activities, inflatables, police and fire exhibitions, and more.

Speaking of Trick-or-Treat, join us on Halloween evening at Plantation Community Center for Trunk or Treat. Wear your best costume, decorate your truck or flatbed truck, and enjoy the evening with friends and family while handing out candy. A movie will be shown after dark.

Another popular event for all of South Florida is the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Art in the Park event, a juried art show held at Rae Carole Armstrong Liberty Tree Park. For two days, visitors can check out fine artists, entertaining musicians, special events and hands-on art projects especially for children.

Plantation concert series, Rock the Park, starts November 1st and is held on the first Friday of each month, from November through April. Food trucks start serving at 6:00 PM and the music begins at 7:00 PM. Bring your lawn chair or blanket to Central Park.

Admission is free. (A wine and beer truck will also be available.)

One of the City’s most popular events is the Annual Firefighters Barbeque. Each year, thousands of visitors enjoy chicken & ribs with the Secret Veltri Sauce. Throughout the day, you and your family will enjoy the bounce houses, carnival games, live music, and more.

Residents should watch for the ticket purchase letter in the mail or call the Fire Department in October at 954-797-2150.

Veterans Day is a day to honor those who served in the Military. Plantation honors its Veterans each year at a service in Veterans Park, located on Lauderdale West Drive and Sunrise Boulevard. Join elected officials and local dignitaries on Monday, November 11th at 9:30 AM. The official holiday season kicks off in grand style with the annual It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation holiday parade. This year’s parade is scheduled for Saturday, November 23rd, and as in the past, it runs down Broward Boulevard to NW 69th Avenue, and ends at City Hall. Kick-off is at 9:00 AM. The City of Plantation is hard at work planning events and opportunities for you to enjoy with your friends and family. Don’t sit on the sidelines! Why Are My Periods So Painful?

BY CAMIL MARRERO MD, MPH, FACOG ave you ever wondered what could be the constant recurrent pain you have with every menstrual cycle? Endometriosis can be the answer.

Endometriosis is a chronic and painful gynecological condition that affects women in their reproductive years.

The endometriosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines inside the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus in the abdominal cavity. These abnormal pockets of tissue called endometrial implants can involve the fallopian tubes, ovaries as well as other areas in the abdomen. With endometriosis the displaced tissue continues to react to the normal menstrual cycle changes, thickening, breaking down and bleeding through the cycle. Because this tissue is trapped within the abdominal cavity the affected areas get irritated and inflamed developing scar tissue and adhesions between organs.

Symptoms of endometriosis are variable. While in some cases patients may have little to no symptoms, in others, the irritations and adhesions can cause severe menstrual cramps, pain with intercourse, pain with bowel movements or urination, heavy menstrual bleeding or even bleeding between menstrual cycles.

Furthermore, the patient can experience infertility problems as well as chronic fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, bloating or nausea particularly worse during the menstrual cycle.

To diagnose endometriosis and other conditions that can cause pelvic pain, your doctor will ask you to describe your symptoms, including the location of your pain and when it happens. The doctor will need to perform a complete physical exam including a pelvic examination. A pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound can help get views of the pelvic reproductive organs, although its role in diagnosing endometriosis can be limited. Some of the findings in the ultrasound can include endometriomas or blood-filled cystic cavities. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can help with diagnosis as well as surgical planning, giving your surgeon detailed information about the location and size of endometrial implants.

Doctors often begin with conservative treatment approaches first, opting for Laparoscopy surgery if initial treatment fails. Your doctor may recommend an over-the-counter pain medication, such as NSAIDs like Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Naproxen (Aleve). Your doctor may recommend hormone therapy in combination with pain relievers if you’re not trying to get pregnant.

Supplemental hormones are effective in reducing or eliminating the pain of endometriosis. Hormonal medication may slow endometrial tissue growth and prevent new implants of endometrial tissue.

Hormone therapy is not a permanent cure for endometriosis. You could experience a return of your symptoms after stopping treatment. Hormone therapy can include contraceptive pills, vaginal rings, progesterone intrauterine devices, implants, progesterone injection, and the progesterone-only pill.

Recently, the FDA approved a new non hormonal medication in two different dosages to treat moderate to severe endometriosis pain that works by lowering the amount of estrogen in the body. This new medication is an option for patients that can not use hormones or patients that try hormone therapy without any improvements in their symptoms.

Please remember that having severe pelvic pain in your cycle, that does not allow you to have a fruitful life in school or work is not normal. If you have any of these symptoms, please visit a gynecologist.

Many residents and city officials came out on a beautiful Saturday morning in August to the unveiling of Westside Regional Hospital’s new patient tower. The grand opening event included tours, fun kids’ activities, a photo booth, games, and so much more showing the “Best side of Westside”.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

More than 100 children and adoptive families came out to celebrate going back to school at JAFCO’s annual “Backto-School Picnic” at the Children’s Village in Sunrise. Children enjoyed inflatable water slides, a bounce house, pony rides, face painting, motorcycle rides and plenty of delicious food. Most importantly, children were provided with all the tools needed for a successful school year as a result of the generous donations collected in drives around the area. The nonprofit organization serves abused, neglected and developmentally disabled children in the tri-county area.

RECIPE OF SUCCESS

Plantation resident and Plantation TooJay’s team member, Terry Brown won the in-house recipe contest. More than 1,200 TooJay’s employees were challenged to create a new sandwich for the menu. The Deli and Line Cook put a twist on a Philly favorite and created the “Philly Grilled Cheese”. The mouth-watering combo of thinly sliced roast beef, green and red peppers, onions, and melted American and provolone cheeses has become a new favorite.
